whose origin may be connected

To date, six men have died

trying to solve the mystery.

And according to legend,
one more will have to die

before the treasure
can be found.

to a 230-year-old
treasure mystery.

the last casing that we did.

We ran out of the wood
approximately 117 feet.

the team is digging

a seven-foot-diameter
steel shaft

known as RP-3
which sets just north

of two recently dug,
identical shafts

labeled RP-2 and RP-1.

The previous, uh,
holes were over Shaft Six.

And now we've moved
just outside of it.

So we're hoping to see
undisturbed material

'cause our target's a tunnel.
Is that what you've seen?

- Yes. Absolutely.
- Perfect.

treasure hunters
reportedly drilled

through two stacked
wooden chests

at a depth of some 110 feet
in the original Money Pit,

containing what were described
as "metal in pieces."

Believing a mother lode of coins

and other possible riches
had been located,

but fearing
that they were protected

by a believed
man-made flood tunnel,

workers dug an adjacent shaft,
known as Shaft Six,

18 feet to the west
down to a depth of 118 feet.

From there, they began
tunneling toward the pit,

hoping to safely
recover the treasure

from below the flood trap.

It didn't work.

Just before
reaching their target,

seawater rushed in.

This caused
tons of wood cribbing

in the Money Pit to collapse...

...crushing the chests
and leaving

a believed debris field
of broken timbers

and scattered treasure
in the flooded Shaft Six tunnel.

So I'm thinking, as soon
as the teeth hit 100 feet,

- we should be ready
for anything.

pieces of timber
that may have come

mid-18th-century artifacts

such as French pottery
and a clay pipe stem,

the team is hoping that RP-3
will make direct contact

with the Shaft Six tunnel

and the fabled treasure

to bring up a piece of treasure?

Rick has a real high interest
in and around Shaft Six.

And given what we found

in RP-1 and RP-2, that may mean

that we're closing in
on the treasure.

are braving the elements

to search for additional clues--
and valuables--

in the northernmost region
of the swamp.

The agenda today is
cut this across,

look for artifacts, stakes,

- whatever we can find.

when they uncovered
a massive stone road,

or ship's wharf,

in the southeast corner
of the swamp

that may be as much
as 500 years old,

as well as a vast
paved feature near its center

that has been dated
to as early as 1200 AD.

But this year, they have
uncovered numerous sections

of a cobblestone pathway

that was lined
with wooden survey stakes

and which led them to an empty

brick and slate
vault-like structure

in the northern region.

All of these finds have given
support to the theory

of the late Oak Island
landowner Fred Nolan,

who believed that the swamp was
created long ago

to hide numerous caches
of buried valuables.

Now, after already finding
more evidence of the pathway

in the northernmost region
of the bog,

they are hoping to prove
that Fred was right

and uncover additional vaults

that still contain
hidden riches.

That looks like C horizon,

but then there's
the organic layer underneath?

Almost like
it's been dug before.

You want to come over, Gar?

Is it in situ, i.e. undisturbed?

Or has it been disturbed?

We may have found evidence
of human activity

that something was done
to hide something

for a lengthy period of time.

And the fact that you can see
the striations going down it.

Now, we've been referring
to them as wharf pins.

It could be a wharf.
It could be off a gate.

It could be for a wall.

Could that be
a piece of Fred's wall?

Maybe.

That's a bloody good find.

After partially
draining the swamp

in the late 1960s,

Fred Nolan claimed
to have discovered evidence

of a wooden wall, or dam, buried

near the northern boundary
of the brackish bog.

And incredibly, Fred's account
of this structure matches

a feature labeled “The Dam”

on a reported
14th-century map of Oak Island

that was given
to the team in 2016

by the late Zena Halpern.

A map that Zena believed was

created by
the Christian military order

known as the Knights Templar.

Nice one.

and the heavy iron pins
the team has found

were not from a wharf

but perhaps the wall

that Fred Nolan claimed to have
found more than 50 years ago?

That's awesome.

I don't know if this is a,

The dimension of that is
roughly what Fred described.

It could be evidence
that we're getting close

- to finding the wall.

create the swamp.

it does appear as though

The next big domino to fall

hot on the trail of this wall.

the treasure, solve the mystery.

in the Oak Island Museum
to hear a report

from Judi Rudebusch,
who was also

the research partner
of the late Zena Halpern.

Judi has taken upon herself

to look
into John Edward's books.

Contained within those books are

encryptions and codes

which we believe tie directly

back to the island.

It's the most fascinating thing
I've ever worked with.

So we started to do
a deep dive in the books.

The clues all seem to point
directly to Oak Island.

researcher John Edwards,
along with author

and 32-degree Freemason
Scott Clarke,

shared excerpts from a series

of five
18th- and 19th-century books

which they believe
contained Masonic clues

linking the medieval order
of the Knights Templar

and a related group known
as the Knights of Malta

to the Oak Island mystery.

Curiously,
one of the books featured

a hand-drawn map of Oak Island
and depicted a square structure

in the northern region
of the swamp

that was eerily similar

to the brick and slate vault

that the team discovered
earlier this year.

We definitely believe

that the books show,

it is
a multigenerational endeavor

linking Biblical treasures
to Oak Island.

Judi, it's all yours.

So we have the Knights of Malta.

They traveled
side by side with the Templars.

They fought with the Templars.

They started out as
the Hospitallers in Jerusalem.

As time went by

and as they moved through

to the different islands,
the knights took on the name

Knights of Rhodes,
Knights of Malta.

These are all names
of the same group.

Next step.

It starts in Jerusalem.

They were a hospital group.

And they were taking care
of all the Crusaders

and people coming
to the Holy Land.

the military order of monks
known as the Knights Templar

was formed by
the Catholic Church and tasked

with protecting Christians
and securing territories

in the Holy Land
during the Crusades.

For nearly two centuries,
they amassed great power

and established strongholds

throughout the Middle East
and Europe

with the support
of the Knights Hospitaller.

However, they also
accumulated great wealth

by establishing
an elaborate banking system

and were rumored

to have taken possession
of priceless religious treasures

such as the Holy Grail,

the Golden Menorah that once
stood in King Solomon's Temple

and the Ark of the Covenant--

treasures that some
researchers believe

the Templars began
safeguarding across the ocean

on Oak Island.

But in 1307,
the Templars were suddenly

persecuted by the Pope
and the King of France

on controversial charges
of heresy.

Many Templar Knights
were imprisoned,

but much
of their known treasures

and the rumored
religious artifacts

they may have possessed
have never been found.

Now, after 1312,

everything that the Templars had

went to the Hospitallers.

And that meant
the money they collected,

the artifacts, the treasures,
everything went to them.

They would have carried along

the same secrets,
the same knowledge.

And they started moving.

So they go from Cyprus,
and then they go to Rhodes.

And then, they go to Malta
in the 1550s.

But while they're on Malta,
what are they doing?

They are digging fortifications
in the underground.

They are making tunnels.
They've got caves.

They're going
into the limestone.

Not real different than
what you see in the Money Pit.

They knew how to dig
in that soil.

So you got to keep
thinking in your head

that they maybe came over here.

And they could have been
depositors, too.

-That'd be fantastic.
-Yeah.

Judi Rudebusch is presenting

astonishing new research
that could potentially link

a secretive fraternity

connected to
the Knights Templar--

known as the Knights of Malta--

to the Oak Island mystery.

Okay. Now we're coming
into our side of the world.

This is Isaac de Razilly.

He was a direct descendant,
through his mother,

of the de Villiers.

The de Villiers were
the grand masters of Malta.

He was also a Knight of Malta.

Isaac de Razilly came
to Nova Scotia

and settled his capital
in the LaHave River,

just around the corner
from Oak Island.

That was 1632, 1633.

Yeah, there's a chance
Isaac de Razilly

and the Knights of Malta made it

all the way up to Oak Island.

And we have found
that there could be

a lot of connective tissue

going on at Lot 5.

the Laginas and their team were
stunned to uncover

a rounded stone foundation

near the shoreline

that archaeologist
Laird Niven believes

may have been
inhabited and modified

by several different groups

prior to the 18th century.

Within and near this feature,

they have found
a mortar-like material

that matches soil samples

from more than 100 feet deep
in the Money Pit area.

And they have also uncovered
stunning artifacts

such as a believed
14th-century lead barter token

that, just like the lead cross
discovered at Smith's Cove

in 2017, may be related
to the Knights Templar.

However, they have also found

numerous pieces
of pottery and buttons

that have yet to be identified.

There was an item found
on Lot 5,

which is on the table.

You're gonna see a button.

What's unique about this button

is that the rays going out
aren't clockwise.

They're counterclockwise.

And then there was

this button here
on a Knight of Malta uniform.

This button also goes
the opposite way around.

And it was Emiliano who spotted

the backwards turning sunrays.

Pretty odd that we've got
a button very similar to that.

This might be the find
that could prove

the Knights of Malta were
on Oak Island.

That's quite remarkable.

-Yeah.
-Look, you know,
Judi is the first person

that's come up
with anything resembling

that starburst button.

This is first I've seen
anything that looks like it.

- Yeah.
- Now, on the table,
you're gonna see

some beads
that were found on Lot 5.

Here is a chart, says Venice.

And you've got
some pretty close matches

but who was in that area?

Who was by Italy?

It could have been
the Knights of Malta.

They were doing trade.

They had every, every chance
to have a bead like this.

It's a clue.

So it could be part
of the same story

that Judi's following.

Did they come
into some information

that the Templars
had deposited something

on this side of the Atlantic?

that the team has made
in recent years,

Rick Lagina has come to suspect

that the 230-year-old
mystery involved

Could that explain

potentially identified

I'd say this presentation says

the Knights of Malta knew
about it.

Treasure, secrets,
all kinds of stuff.

You know, there's no stronger
bond than brothers in arms.

I don't have all the answers
to this story.

But I'm still gonna work on it.

I do believe--
I've always believed--

that things were done
on the island,

regarding this mystery, incrementally.

And you've shown
how incrementally

the Knights of Malta evolved
in terms of their presence,

in terms of their efforts,
in terms of their travels,

and where
their influences led them.

There could be lots
of information in Malta.

And I think we should
consider having a look.

I would agree.

It's gonna take a lot
of homework to validate a trip.

we need to wrap our heads
around it collectively.

several Venetian trade beads

in this feature.

And several weeks ago,
Moya unearthed a bead

that is identical to the one
she just uncovered.

The red colorant is
early 1700s and before that.

scientific analysis
on all of them,

archaeometallurgist Emma Culligan determined

that they could date back
to as early as the 17th century.

That's the find of the day!

Beads that, according to
the research of Judi Rudebusch,

could support the theory that
members of the Knights of Malta

may have visited Oak Island?

Nice.

Yeah, so, from what I remember

from Emma's analysis is

the red coloring on the bead
comes from copper content,

- which she found
through the XRF.

concrete or wood to protect

man-made structures
such as wharfs or docks.

a great job of uncovering it.

could it be part
of the so-called wall

that Fred Nolan discovered?

It wouldn't take long with
a bunch of boulders this size

to build up enough material
to block this off...

to build a swamp.

as a dam to create the swamp,

could it also be
the same feature

on the believed
14th-century Templar map

that Zena Halpern shared
with the team back in 2016?

between these boulders
and the wall.

It's possible.

The one thing that came to mind

when Fred first spoke
of this wall was

the reference to Zena's map

and the reference to a barrage,
which is a dam or a barrier.

It would be wonderful
to prove that.

To me, it speaks to the fact

that Fred saw something there

and it affirms
that the map is legitimate.

I think you have to plot
all of them together

- and see if it makes sense.
