We don't know a lot about
the other person,

and then we start to settle in
once we know more information.

your family.

What's your specialty?

I'm an NICU doctor,

ICU for small babies.
-[Diego] Mini babies.

-Mini babies?

And what do you do
in entertainment?

Uh, producing.

I work for many studios,
and now I'm on my own,

sinking or swimming.
We'll see.

Talk about a talented
duo here, yeah.

We met in Argentina when
we were 19, and we've been

together ever since.

So it's like two
or three years.

-So five years?
-Oh, yeah, two years.

We originally moved
from Argentina to L.A.

for Diego's work.

And then for my work,

we had to move to New York
for my residency.

Once my residency was done,
we were like, where do we wanna,

you know, he was still
working here, and it just made

sense to come back to L.A.

But then you got your
fellowship opportunity in L.A.

Yeah.

Caro went to
the best schools,

spoke various languages,

and it was really
hard 'cause no one cared.

-Like, you need to have...

...the U.S. validation.

And it's been -- it was a very
long journey, but very --

-It was a good journey.

We have a daughter.

Um, she's seven.

Um, she's disabled, so she's
non-mobile, non-verbal.

So we're looking for a house
that's gonna accommodate

that lifestyle,
meaning, you know,

that they have their space
for the wheelchair and space

to bathe her and, yeah,
basically space.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, no, that's good to know,

'cause if we need to look at

an ADA compliant design,
then obviously

that's important.
-Yeah.

So my residency finished
in June, and I gave birth

in April, so right
before we finished.

And it was like,
"It's gonna be perfect."

We have everything kind
of planned, and, you know.

-Life.
-Life happens.

[Carolina] So little Gali came,
and then five days after

she was born, I noticed she was
doing these very subtle

jerky movements.

They found that, you know,
she was effectively seizing.

It wasn't only the seizures,
but also, like,

the brain waves were not normal.

Like, we call it
an abnormal background.

So then the roller coaster,
the tsunami came.

That's how I felt.

-Happy.
-She's happy.

-Connected.
-Yeah.

[both laugh softly]

[Gali laughs]

[Diego] When Gali was born,
we couldn't get a diagnosis.

She's literally undiagnosed
to date.

And therefore, like,
we never really made decisions

that would be like,
"OK, we need to find a house

"that's accessible to make life
easier by adjusting

this little, uh, logistics."

[Carolina]
We didn't think about these

things when she was younger
'cause it's easier when

you have a baby or like a small
toddler to move them around.

Now she's getting bigger,
so it's harder

to move her around.

So you need the space
to be able to.

I think one of the key
elements for us in choosing

to go through this experience is
pragmatically speaking,

and very openly about it,
we need to get done fast.

Like we cannot be in
a traditional renovation period

where like, "Yeah,
it's gonna be next month

and then next month and then
next month," 'cause we need

to give Gali the routine
that she needs.

So we trust the --
the process, the experience,

and hopefully it will be
a good one.

Have you looked at any houses?
Have you started the search?

[Carolina] No, I mean,
I love looking online and just

browsing through houses.

You'll notice that there's not
a lot available that would be

classified as ADA compliant.

-Yeah.
-So as we're searching
for the houses,

don't cancel something off just
because it's not currently

set up perfectly.
-Yeah.

You know, we can add ramps,
we can widen doorways,

we can do whatever you think
you need to do.

-[Carolina] Yeah, yeah.
-What is your budget?

Our budget is $1.8M.

-OK.
-I think that's the highest
we can go.

And the area ideally would be
West Hollywood.

West Hollywood is kinda
the heart of the city,

just in the middle.

And Gali has therapies
that are like an hour north,

half an hour south.

So it's kind of the ideal
neighborhood for us.

I mean, West Hollywood,
that at $1.8M can be eaten up

very fast, so.
-Yeah.

-But it's such a great area.
-[both] Yeah.

Good thing for you is
you have us.

You have our construction
design teams.

You have all our production
team over here, too.

There's so many people.

a priority to get you into
the beautiful home for you

and your daughter.

This house was built in 1927.

So it is a beautiful
100-year-old home.

It is 1,700 square feet,
three bedrooms, two bathrooms,

plus there's an ADU out back.

The garage has been converted
into another space.

-It is listed for $1.55M.

It's probably gonna sell
somewhere around $1.6M,

maybe $1.65M.

This is your dining room.

So you get the height in here
when you're entertaining,

when you're dining.

You get the light
from the skylight.

And I like that the dining room
is accessible from all areas.

There's the hallway,
bathroom's just over here.

for Gali to...

to move her around.

It is a galley, so it is fairly
narrow right here.

-So right now, especially
with the brown cabinetry,

it's sucking all the light up.

And then this is the TV area.

[Diego] I don't see how Gali
can enjoy this,

this part of the house.

Yeah, yeah, it's, yeah.

For instance, like we
put her in her stander.

You have to explain what
a stander is.

-Yeah, well, stander, is --
-Not everyone knows.

It's like a device where
you're able to get her to stand

up and carry some weight.

So she can use her joints
and start like sort of feeling

different parts of her body.

But then like we use a mat
where she would go on the floor

while she's playing or watching
TV or whatever she wants to do.

This is a little bit cramped.

Like you would have to go
like around.

Just doesn't have the space
that I would like it to have.

We could put a TV in that
other room at the front

if you would prefer
to have it there.

Then there is more
space altogether.

We know we would need to do
some accessibility work

out front.

I think the front two rooms are
in pretty good shape.

Yeah, they're great.

Here, I would pull this out,
do a true island.

It just feels like a waste
of space.

And then it would make this
all feel a little bit more

open, which is nice.

But I also have an idea
for Gali's room to see

if this is something
that would work for her.

This is the larger room,
but it also comes with

a big bathroom.

It's a pretty big size.

We could switch this around so
the access is from the hallway.

Then your vanity could be

But then just have a really big
zero-clearance shower.

I think a shower would be
easier, just because we're

gonna buy one of
those bathing chairs, and it has

to be the whole thing goes
in the shower.

This could just be
a really big shower,

and that probably would work.

But then, to be honest, in all
these years, how many tubs...

-You don't even trust the ones
in the hotels.

-You think they're dirty.

You wanna renovate for what
you're gonna need,

and this would be --

I mean, this is a huge space
for a bathroom, so completely

re-imagining it.
-Yeah, yeah.

[Jonathan] Why don't we check
out, we haven't looked in

the backyard at all.
-[Diego] Yeah, let's see.

-Is there anything missing
from your outdoor space?
-Yeah.

Like Gali, you know,
she does horseback riding

for therapies, and she also
does her therapies in a pool,

which is that one time in
her life where she has no one

around her, just floating
around, moving her legs

and her arms as much as she can
with a physical therapist.

How much would it be to,
like, if we were even thinking

about building a pool here?

All in, you'd probably be
looking at somewhere between

$55,000 and $75,000,
something like that.

-So.
-It's a big chunk of the budget.

-Yeah, exactly.
-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

So is that -- is that
a very important must?

-I mean.
-[both] Yeah.

-Gali first, so yeah.
-[Carolina] Yeah.

I can imagine if she loves
doing the therapy...

-Yeah.
-...then that would be something
we'd have to do.

Why don't you guys just take
some time, walk around

a little, you know, think about
how you would use the space.

There's no rush.
We've got lots of time, so.

What did you really think?

The kitchen needs work,
but then if we are going to try

to put in a pool

we're going to eat all
our money there.

Yeah.
It's like a lot of work.

-The bathrooms, the kitchen.
-Yeah.

I do like the size
of the bedroom.

[Carolina] The size
of the bedroom
is really good for her.

-[Diego] And the bathroom.
-Yeah, and the remodeled
bathroom

would be great, but yeah.

It's really hard to find
a house that has absolutely

everything that Gali needs
because people, you know,

most people don't deal
with disabilities on daily life.

So they don't know what,
you know, what it entails

or what you need.

[Diego] I think if we could find
a house that's closer

to the right thing, then it
would probably be a lot easier

for everybody.
-Yeah.

Every time I'm ever,
you know, talking with clients

or walking through
a home especially,

I'm learning something.
I'm picking things up.

And especially when they have
very specific needs,

what they have found
in the past was kind of

a frustration.
I can fix all of that stuff.

I'm gonna definitely send
a list to Drew of, like,

every detail about what would
make life easier

and tailor it
to exactly what they need.

[Drew] Jonathan's house pick
needed a lot of reno work

to make it more accessible,
but with the home I found,

it's got more space.

So I'm hoping we can simply
build those features in.

[Jonathan] Are we allowed?

It sounds like there's
construction here.

If we get your scrubs dirty,
is that bad?

Pulling you away from work
to do a house hunt?

-They're easy to clean.
That's the good part.

This is the house.

here, you could use this

as a second yard.

You could come out here for
naked coffee in the morning,

and nobody would see you.

that you could do a ramp

and still have
the lounging areas.

I actually like how
it's laid out.

I think it could be adapted
pretty easily.

One thing to be aware of,
a house like this, 1926,

you're gonna wanna have
inspections done.

You're gonna wanna check
out everything to make sure

at a base level
that everything's safe.

Would you want to consider
raising this up so it's all

the same level?
-[Diego] That would be amazing.

I mean, that would be amazing.

Well, the challenge is
it means you have to raise

your doors.
It means this wouldn't work.

So you'd have to either
get rid of the fireplace

or build a new one.

What is nice, though,

is you actually have great
height in here.

So even if you raised it to
this height, this still feels

like a great room.

This is an area that
she'll use as she's getting

to the house, but that's
probably more important going

into her bedroom and then also
this whole showering of it all,

because we need the bathroom
to be accessible.

If we're looking back here,
this is the bigger bathroom.

[Carolina] Oh, wow.

[Drew] You have so much space
to work with.

[Jonathan] So we would wanna do
a zero-clearance shower.

of space to make sure that

it's functional for
the wheelchair and the chair

within the shower.

I think if we could make it
so that there's ample clearance,

Budget's always the first
concern for me.

It's a massive job to gut
and redo a bathroom,

but also to raise floors,

Look at some of
the access stuff.

So all of these things are
possible, and we haven't even

seen the kitchen.

In a 1926 home, a kitchen can
be really dated.

[Drew] So you got a good-sized
dining area.

Yeah, if this was leveled out,
actually, this would be great.

[Carolina] Yeah.

[Jonathan] I actually like
how bright it is.

Every room is really bright.

[Drew] OK, wait, this makes me
feel better.

Because it's actually
a big open-plan.

[Carolina] Yeah.

It's nice 'cause there's a lot
of space to walk around.

This was most
likely an addition.

-It has different flooring.
-Yeah.

It's not as old as the main
house, but you can still tell

this was done quite
some time ago.

-It needs a little bit of work.

-[Carolina] Yeah, some paint.
-[Drew] Yeah.

There's some cleanup that
you can do.

The cabinets are a little
rough, but --

And there's no hood.

[Jonathan] Well, that's illegal.

With your budget,
would you consider not spending

much money in here because
you clean it up a little bit

and it'll be doable?
-[Carolina] Yeah.

But focus on the bathroom,
maybe that living area where

you can raise the floor.
-Yeah.

I think those are
the main issues.

Keep in mind, there's also
an ADU that's finished.

-So you have a whole other
living space over there.
-Oh wow.

And the fact you have
this gigantic pool out here

for Gali would be amazing.

[Carolina] Oh, wow.

And it looks like it's
in pretty good shape, too.

[Jonathan] I think it's a really
great option.

And the great thing about
the ADU is I travel a lot.

Carolina has calls at night.

So having family being able
to come here, 'cause most of

our family lives overseas,
I think that's a great thing

about the house.

So, price point, this house is
listed for your max budget.

Basically, it's $1.795 million.

But the good thing for you is
we're not talking about

a brand new,
fully-redone kitchen.

-Right.
-That's the biggest expense.

You have the pool you want.

-We don't have to put a pool in.
-[Carolina] Yeah.

We need to put in some ramps.

We need to level out the living
room, and we need to tackle

Gali's bathroom, but those are
your major expenses.

It is priced well.

I don't think we're gonna get
them down much.

I think we try to be realistic
with the budget we have

and, you know, that we are
in L.A., and everything is

so expensive, and we like
the neighborhood as well.

From the listing photos
to seeing the house in person,

it is actually so much better
than I thought it would be

for them.
But look, this is great.

I mean, they got the pool down
here already for them.

They have all the extra square
footage in the ADU for guests.

This deck area is awesome.

If they want this house,
they're gonna have to find

more money for the renovation.

But I want this to
be the house.

It's a good place.

heavy into design,

where did you land
on the finances?

Did you find the additional
money for renovation?

I mean, this is such
an important moment in time

for all of us, and especially
for the years ahead with Gali,

that we did find the money.

Through a loan, we were able to
cobble it together.

-The number we talked about,

I think it was $130,000.
We got it.

OK, 'cause we originally were
talking $150,000 for the design.

Yeah, I think $130,000 is good,
especially if we can reuse

the kitchen cabinets and keep
our costs down in there.

Then we can focus on leveling
up the floors,

doing the bathroom.

You won't have to jeopardize
any of the stuff you liked.

We'll just have to make sure
we're very thrifty with how

we spend on
the things you want.

That's what you guys
are here for.

Exactly, right?

For the design, what's
your gut for what you wanna do?

I think for both Carolina
and myself and, of course, Gali,

is never losing the soul
and charm of the house.

And then we don't want it
to look like it's a hospital

or it's very clinical.

It should just feel like
a house, like a beautiful,

warm, inviting house.
-[Diego] Yeah.

It just happens to be a house
that makes life easier for Gali

as well because there's lots
of room to get around.

This is the best part
of working with a great designer

is because you can
get the function

and you can get the style.

You don't have to choose
one or the other.

[Jonathan] The plan for
Gali's bathroom is to install

a large zero-clearance shower,
along with two hinged doors

to make it accessible
for Gali's wheelchair.

We'll lay in handmade
terracotta tile to bring

old-world charm into
this beautiful, bright space.

And finally, we'll install
a pocket door for easier access

in and out of the bathroom.

Now, we just need to pick
the tile for the shower.

I think Carolina and I will be
pretty much aligned on

the greens, so this is nice.

we just bought, a new bathroom

that we're picking
the colors for.

everything's taken care of now?

The termite damage did stop
just around the opening

of the fireplace.

of active termites?

We've taken care of all
the termite issues.

No termites were found, so all
we had to do was remove any

wood that was compromised
along with the interior side

of the fireplace,
which had a lot of water damage.

So from the outside, it still
looks like it's a fireplace.

From the inside,
it's a nice clean wall.

The fact that we don't have to
tear down these walls is gonna

save us a ton of money.

Now we need to figure how
we're gonna build these ramps

outside, taking into account
slope, length, and width.

[Amos]
If this was our full ramp --

-[Drew] Just careful
on the edge.
-[Amos] Yeah.

Yeah, like, to me,
this isn't ideal.

If you're not with Gali
and you're just walking into

the house, people would walk up
the steps and they have

nowhere to step.

It's sort of like stepping onto
an angle, right?

So what if instead, if you pull
it back a little bit,

what if we made
this a landing?

We wanna bring
this up level.

Yeah, exactly.

And then we can have this
as a flat landing.

The top of the slope will be
right there, so that

if you come up this way,

it's just like four steps
instead of three.

And then from over there,
it's just a little bit more

of a steep slope, but still
plenty doable for bringing

Gali in.
And now it works for both ways.

We've built a few ramps
before, so we understand

what needs
to be done structurally.

However, this is a unique
entrance into the home,

the way it kinda comes up
a step, and then there are

a bunch of different areas
where it comes up another step

or two or three.

So we're trying to figure out
the best function for Gali

with her chair,
but also the best function

for everybody else coming in
and out of the house daily.

And it's a huge shower.

Like, this is all the space
they need to bring

Gali's chair in,
transfer her if they need to.

Whenever we're looking at
spaces, Jonathan and I

are always thinking,
"What would Jonathan say?

What would Drew say?"

But now both of us are like,
"What does Gali need?"

Her needs are the most
important thing

with this design.

So anything we're looking at,
we think design and function,

and then that extra layer of,
well, what does Gali need?

Will this work for the family?

[Drew] This house is going
to be absolutely

game-changing for Gali.

The bathroom is
rocking and rolling.

We have the plumbing in.
We have the tile here.

These tiles are so pretty.
The kitchen looks great.

The doors are being sprayed.

There's better color
on the cabinets.

Everything's coming together.

I don't feel we're really
behind on anything.

We can forge ahead
with the rest of the design

side of things,
so I'm feeling pretty good.

Gali's first physical therapy,

she started working with Gali
when she was around

two and a half months,
and she suggested horse therapy

to help her out
with her development.

It became, like,
her favorite therapy.

-She loves it.
-She likes it.

I mean, she likes the horse
more than the two of us,

that's for sure.

-Good job, gorda.
-[Carolina] Good job, Gali.

-You're so straight.
-[woman] Did you hear that?

-They said, "You're
so straight."
-[Gali coos]

[Diego]
When we first came here, Gali
could not hold her own head up,

and now she's able to use
balance and a lot of muscles

she'd never used before.

And I think it's mostly
thanks to this therapy.

Even though we don't have
a diagnosis, we're just hoping

that one day they will find
what it is, so there will be

hopefully one day some sort of
treatment to help her

in whichever capacity.

For us, the truth is,
after living in the hospital

for two years and dealing
with real life issues,

I mean, we're
not stressed at all.

It's just, we're anxious to get
back and to see the results,

but there's no stress element,
at least to me.

part of the reason also coming
into the show is,

you know, knowing that we were
in good hands

and, you know,
we wouldn't have to be in every

little detail and kind of like
give them the keys and then,

OK, hope for the best.

And I think it's gonna be great.
