You're hoping the audience is going to go one way and you're trying to predict where the audience is going to go and we put it out there.

They surprised us a few times.

They didn't want what we thought they did and we gave it to them because they voted.

What really changed things for me was the first interactive pay-per-view, Taboo Tuesday, where I got voted in to face Jericho for the IFC title.

Wow, Shelton Benjamin, an overwhelming favorite, 37 percent.

I assumed Batista would actually get the go-ahead.

My reaction to being voted into the match is delayed because I wouldn't hear Batista's name.

So Milwaukee and the internet agreed it's going to be Shelton Benjamin one-on-one right now with Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship.

Going into that match, I knew nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

I didn't know I was wrestling because they didn't know if I was wrestling.

Jericho didn't know if I was wrestling.

So we went out and had that match on the fly.

Didn't know I was winning until Jericho didn't kick out.

The people voted and it was me who has to call and now I stand here the new Intercontinental Champion.

At first, it was weird having a pay-per-view on a Tuesday, but I did like the concept, you know, and it kept people on their toes.

Like, you legit didn't know until your name was called who was going out there.

And I thought that, like, there was something fun about that.

It was a very smart resource tool for gauging our audience to see where they were at.

And I think that they liked the fact that they were involved.

I think they were interesting.

I think they were innovative.

And I also think there's probably a reason why they don't do them anymore.

I think more than anything, the larger audience, they want to know what they're going to get.

And the audience not knowing what the attraction is going to be, I think, is what led to those not being highly viewed pay-per-views.

Fan engagement was paramount to WWE's success.

And while online voting provided a whole new level of participation, another immersive venture that began as merely an internet show years earlier in 1997

was starting to blossom and gave fans unprecedented superstar access.

This has been a very turbulent time.

And I know that there has been the talk that you take a couple of steps back before you take five or six steps forward.

Where do you see everything right now?

The reason why we have survived is because we're always in a state of flux, and that's where we are right now.

WWE saw that there was a fascination of WWE behind the scenes and presented a

forward-thinking concept on air, bite this, an effort to exploit the opportunity

offered by the public's intrigue in how things are done behind the camera.

For years, in order to get this type of inside information and exclusive interviews, you have to call a 900 number.

How do you feel about guys like, say, Brock Lesnar or John Cena who are younger and already shooting their way up there?

How do I feel?

You know, God bless them, man.

More power to them.

You know, if they can be that high in this business this fast, why not?

Bite this was very innovative at the time.

You know, we didn't get to peek behind the curtain in that way.

You know, it kind of made you feel like you were hearing something you weren't supposed to be hearing.

That style of, like, realism, I think, was getting more and more popular.

Wrestlers were saying things that maybe they wouldn't say on television.

Diehard fans sink their teeth into stuff like that.

What's your mindset and how are you feeling about everything that's going on with the Raw brand?

The bottom line is everything sucks.

I'm not happy with the direction Stone Cold Steve Austin's going.

I ain't happy with the direction the whole company's going.

I think the writing has been pretty substandard.

I'll go one better than that.

It's been piss poor.

So the creative team really didn't have anything to do with bite this.

We would hear about it because sometimes there would be plenty of things.

He hates all of us and the creative sucks.

Yeah, I hated it.

I absolutely hated it because we're an entertainment company and what we do is we tell stories.

If you're telling a story in one platform and another platform is telling a completely different story and they

merge, it's hard for the audience to tell the difference.

John Cena has risen to the top.

The people have really taken a liking to him.

He's a great wrestler.

He's a smart guy and he's going to do extremely well.

After all I have done as a champion, I have to step in the ring with a piece of garbage like John Cena.

It's a little confusing.

You can tell I'm not a big fan.

Throughout the Ruthless Aggression era, Bite This became a popular stop for top WWE superstars and legends and the show was given a boost in

production value in TV time by WWE in 2005.

I really do wish I could have won my last match and I would love to have worked with Kurt Angle.

Sitting to my left is of course Matt Hardy and Matt, thanks for coming on the show.

But the most infamous episode featured Matt Hardy, Lita and Edge.

These three superstars had been surrounded in controversy after Hardy discovered that his then-girlfriend Lita was also in a relationship with Edge.

The Matt and Edge story had grown and taken a life unto itself.

You would go to live events and there would be a segment of the audience that would start Matt Hardy chants.

Not only do I respect you, I love you.

The internet community just kept stirring it and kept stirring it to the point that it was difficult to ignore.

I remember a very specific Bite This where Edge and I were on and Matt Hardy was on and they're like, just shoot,

just say what you're feeling.

We're like, that's not how this works.

Edge and Lita were in one room and I was in one room and I remember we were saying stuff back and forth to each other and if we would have probably been in the same room at that time we'd been in a fight.

What emotion are you talking about and what do you want to say right now to Matt Hardy?

The emotion I'm talking about is hate, pure and simple.

You know, you drag our personal lives out for everyone to be able to comment on, to talk about, like it's anyone's business.

Well, I got a confession.

Everyone makes mistakes.

You start to watch it from home going, I know this other stuff is not real but that's real.

That's not a scripted show.

They weren't even supposed to say that.

As WWE embraced the advancements in technology to keep things fresh and new in the ever evolving world of the 21st century.

It's very difficult to come up with new and new that works and new that will stick.

If you don't offer something new, if you don't offer something fresh, if you don't offer something different, if you don't offer something progressive, if you're not forward thinking, you're walking up and down the

escalator.

We did want to feel like we were still in the attitude era.

We were in a different era and we needed different types of shows.

We're going to make this look different than the previous era.

And we did.

Anytime in entertainment, you can have a first time ever, whether that's a match, a stipulation or an experience, really, that's what this is about.

You know, it's like anything, you know, maybe the first version, you know, becomes something else after there's some tweaks.

Almost two decades later, the Elimination Chamber is still a staple of the WWE calendar.

And in 2017, the Chamber was revamped with a new streamlined design.

Priority number one, giving superstars more room to maneuver on top of those troublesome pods.

Both Elimination Chamber and Money in the Bank have become such iconic WWE stipulations that they are showcased as their own WWE pay-per-view events, each

continuing to provide memorable, unpredictable moments year after year.

what it's turned into now, it just created this buzz and excitement that really there hadn't been for a really long time.

very forward-thinking by WWE 15 years ago.

While not every attempt was a home run, the forward-thinking and innovative creations of Rufus Aggression Era laid the groundwork for the next generation in WWE,

and continue to captivate audiences to this day.

Anything new and innovative is going to shake up the status quo.

And that's just the natural progression of WWE.

That's how this company has stayed alive when all others have failed.

There wasn't really a women's division at the time.

If there was a women's match...

Why can they not do the same as the guys?

We thought, let's build this women's division, let's see where we can go.

We all just want to get out there and do our thing.

These women are giving it everything they've got!

Seeing what our women could really do, and to truly tell a story versus being eye candy.
