An era that will go down in WWE history.

The effort, the heart, mostly with the spleen.

An era that changed the game.

We are the Generation X.

An era defined in two words.

Ruthless aggression.

In the late 90s, after decades of appealing to a younger demographic, WWE decided to pivot to an edgier product.

The Attitude Era was Wild West.

You could just do anything you wanted.

The Attitude Era also introduced new match concepts, such as the merciless and awe-inspiring Hell in a Cell.

It is a perverse, diabolical structure.

And increased physical competition with tables, ladders, and chairs.

That must be a 20-foot ladder.

No!

Jeez!

You have essentially two choices at that point.

You can either decide to push the envelope even further and try to see what you can get away with without being yanked off the air, or you can stop

and say, we need to reinvent ourselves and what's the next thing?

In need of a fresh start in June of 2002, now five years removed from the birth of Attitude, Vince McMahon addressed the WWE roster and laid down a

challenge.

I took on WCW and it took me a while, but I kicked their asses and bought the company because of

ruthless aggression.

Which one of you has that quality?

Who has enough ruthless aggression?

With this new motivation, several recently acquired superstars began to step up, as well as some newly introduced on-air characters who were

used as a vehicle to revolutionize the landscape of WWE.

Anybody that's involved in innovation and entertainment in particular, you have to rally your team, whether it's talent or the people that support that

talent, to refocus, re-energize, and think of new ways to tell your stories or to present your product.

What's fascinating to me is, to this day, I still have people reaching out to me regularly, thanking me for inventing raw roulette.

Raw roulette was awesome.

Bringing in Eric, the former antagonist of WWE at WCW, opened up the door to do things where he wasn't a typical heel.

Welcome to a very special edition of Eric Bischoff's Monday Night Raw.

In Eric being able to introduce some of these wilder concepts, if you will, that's exactly what Eric did in WCW to get noticed.

Let's take that same attitude, let's take that same innovation and apply it here.

If there were a match, it would be outrageous and entertaining, seeing William Regal and Goldust dressed up as showgirls, which Regal nailed, by the way, coming down the aisle.

Probably my favorite thing that I've ever done, and people always look at me sideways when I say this, but because of the amount of comedy that I studied, as much as I

did wrestling, I got to pull it off a lot in that one segment.

Is that bloodshot on his face, or has he disappeared?

The unpredictability of raw roulette created more than comedy.

At times, it elevated the card.

You know, it was an opportunity to have, essentially, a pay-per-view on raw, is what it was.

So, tonight, you two are going to put your tag team titles on the line.

And let's just spin the wheel and see what kind of a match you're going to end up in.

Oh, my God!

The very first tables, ladders and chairs match in the history of raw.

As a kid watching raw, something like the roulette wheel was really exciting.

And they paid it off in so many good ways.

There was, like, a random, incredible TLC match on raw because of the raw roulette wheel at one point.

The incriminator!

Through the table!

I just wanted to be able to express some more creativity and attempt to do something different.

He was just awesome.

He's got it!

My God, he's got it!

To all seven men!

After its initial success, raw roulette continued to serve as a vehicle for new concepts in the years that followed, with the wheel even once landing on a match

the very first of its kind.

I know I've set up a match tonight for you against Victoria, but to keep in the spirit of raw roulette...

Can you imagine that?

A steel cage match.

Stopped on a cage match.

I mean, it was like, what a great opportunity.

Go have a cage match.

All right.

My goodness!

This cage is taking its toll.

To be able to have an opportunity to be creative with a variable that had never been used before, that aspect of it really means a lot to me.

Ladies, I just love my work.

Just one month after the debut of raw roulette, Eric Bischoff presented a much bigger innovation.

At Survivor Series, you will bear witness to the Elimination Chamber.

I think it was a matter of us overdoing Hell in a Cell a little too much, so I think we were just looking for something that had the

visual impressiveness of Hell in a Cell, but was brand-new and different.

An ingenious creation.

Elimination.

From the mind of Eric Bischoff.

We put together these packages, right, describing it.

I always found those amusing.

There was just some guy.

He's not identified.

We had no idea who it was.

And he was just like, 14 tons of steel.

36-foot diameter, exactly 2 miles of chain.

It's 16 feet of roof to the floor.

Total weight, 10 tons.

The steel hell.

Like, who is this person?

I don't know.

But he seems credible, I guess.

Six raw superstar eliminations for the World Heavyweight Title.

Can Survivors be the same?

With construction complete, there was no better place to debut The Chamber than the unofficial home of WWE.

Yeah, well, it's always great to debut something at Madison Square Garden.

New Yorkers, The Garden, they call out BS when they see it.

As The Chamber was set up in the world's most famous arena, the six superstars, who later would be locked within its confines, made their way inside, eager

to catch their first glimpse of the menacing structure.

You know, you'd hear, oh, no, we're building it, the whole thing.

And the next time I saw it was Madison Square Garden, where I walked out and was like, holy s***.

Any thoughts come to mind?

For this?

Yeah, we're all f***ed.

Can you put that in a show?

Yes.

What's that?

Big.

Big.

Pretty cool looking, though.

Very cool looking, actually.

I think it has new ideas that maybe I can pull off that I'll have an advantage over the other guys with.

I think that this offers a lot of room for imagination.

You'll be able to stand on top of The Chamber because the cage goes like this.

So you're here, you could probably stand because it's like that way, you know?

If you were on an angle like...

No, I'm saying like if you're...

The thing is like this, if you were here, you might touch the roof, but if you're on the edge of it because the cage goes like that, you might be okay.

Somebody's gonna get f***ed up in that.

What none of the six superstars knew then was just how true Booker T's words would be.

Elimination Chamber is beginning to lower King.

It's starting to move, JR. It's moving downward around that ring.

And you know what that means.

We are just a heartbeat or two away from the brutality of Hell in a Cell, the unpredictability of war games, the tradition of the Survivor Series

with the importance of the world's title.

These men, their fate being sealed, locked inside this unique structure.

We were like the crash test dummies actually going out there.

This is a steel grid that we're getting body slammed on.

Not very wrestler-friendly, is this structure, to say the least.

This is not designed for us to work in.

This is designed to look unbelievable, and it is the hardest structure I've ever been in.

With the Elimination Chamber, it was completely different than really I think anything the company had done before that.

And a lot more complex as far as the actual match.

Michael catapulted.

His body has been broken perhaps in half here.

R.A.D. Oh no, way to heavy thinking here.

You know, as I was laying there and I saw him go to the top of the pot, I was thinking like, oh, you can't stand up straight.

And I'm looking at him thinking like, that looks really awkward.

Like, I don't know if he can jump from there.

Then also, the top of the pot doesn't have a spring like the top rope, so I gotta jump far enough to make up for that, but not too far to overshoot.

It was not an easy calculation, and I was off.

On tip of late!

I think I overshot a little bit, and as I was coming down, my shin came right across his throat.

It was just going tragically in the wrong direction.

Like, I'd walk over to somebody and they'd hit me, and as soon as I'd take a bump, I can't breathe again.

You know what I mean?

Like, it would just all inflame back up.

I felt horrible about it, but of course, he continued the match to the point to where I don't remember even knowing that he was hurt, at least not that bad.

How did he even hobble around the ring when you think about it?

That was attitude.

You did what you had to do to survive, even if it's at your own expense.

Shawn Michaels, only a second match in four years after sustaining what we call as a career-ending back injury.

Despite some complications, that first Elimination Chamber in 2002 was a massive success and evolved into a highly anticipated annual event.

It is the Elimination Chamber.

There's only been one.

The Elimination Chamber was just another place.

To be very violent.

And what could I do with this person here?

Let's go!

Goldberg is destroying every beating heart in sight!

And now we are down to two!

Oh, my God!

He hit Goldberg in the head!

Look at this!

My God, I don't believe it!

The Game turned out the lights of Bill Goldberg!

Throughout Triple H's career, there were a lot of doubters.

But he was able to take every opportunity and make it his own.

The Game has survived the Elimination Chamber!

You take the Elimination Chamber, and here's something where it's perfect for that character to survive.

Triple H will go on to win in the Elimination Chamber a record four times.

It's a three!

Congratulations to The Game, who has gone through hell one more time!

While the Elimination Chamber provided the WWE Universe with a one-night spectacle of brutality, in 2005, another innovative match

concept began to take shape.

One which would deliver excitement and intrigue for as much as an entire year's time.

I have an idea for a match!

It's a match that involves Y2J!

Five other elite WWE superstars!

And most importantly, one very big, solid steel ladder!

The idea for Money in the Bank was something that I came up with with Michael Hayes and collaborated with Chris Jericho on.

The idea was, if you had a big group ladder match at WrestleMania, what can we do if it wasn't for the title?

Eventually, we were like, okay, what if they get a title match the next night?

I think it was.

And we took that to Vince, and he's like, okay, I like the idea of a future title, but what if it was, they had a year to cash it in?

As opposed to the next night.

And it could be any time, any place, anywhere.

Inside of this briefcase is a contract for a future world title match.

This briefcase will be suspended over the ladder at WrestleMania.

All you've got to do is be the man that climbs that ladder and grabs this briefcase, and you have an opportunity for a future world title match anytime during the next 12

months.

With the intriguing new concept green-lit, the first Money in the Bank ladder match was set for WrestleMania 21.

But not all of the participants were initially receptive of its potential merits.

Edge, he was so pissed in terms of participating in this thing.

I'll be honest.

At first, I was just tired of doing ladder matches at WrestleMania.

So I said, well, maybe I'm better off not in this.

Maybe I'm just not on this show this year.

And I make sure I'm on the show next year in a different capacity because I don't want to be that guy who every year, we got a ladder match, oh, we'll chuck Edge in it.

I just didn't want to get pigeonholed into that.

Let's talk about WrestleMania for a moment.

From Raw, the six-way Money in the Bank ladder match.

Yeah, we got WrestleMania 21, baby.

Yeah, it'd be really cool to get that contract.

I think so, yeah.

Layaro's talked into it.

And the fact that I had to be talked into doing the Money in the Bank ladder match, I sound like a

giant dumbass for not understanding what it was and what it could be.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following contest is the Money in the Bank ladder match.

All of the guys in this match deserve a spotlighted match on this card.

We're ready to take that next step.

Some teamwork there.

We also had Shelton Benjamin in this match.

So if we could think of something spectacular, we'd kind of go around and go, could you pull it?

And it became a staple of WrestleMania, a big deal.

He's shoving the ladder!

Don't tell me Edge is gonna win this thing!

He's got it!

Yes, he's got it!

Edge has earned the opportunity to wrestle the world champion anytime in the next year.

I'm so happy I was talked into doing that match.

For so many reasons.

Now, the question remained, when would the Rated-R superstar strike?

Initially, our thinking was the cash-in would be much more traditional.

It would be, okay, I'm cashing in at SummerSlam, and you hype up SummerSlam, kind of like the winner of the Royal Rumble gets their match at WrestleMania.

So, I'm assuming I should go tell Batista that you're ready to exercise your world title match tonight?

Are you kidding me?

I mean, not only is that contract money in the bank, but I am money in the bank.

And I'll tell you when I'm damn good and ready to face Batista for the title.

But I think that when he won it, he'd start to map out the direction of what we'd ultimately see is how the money in the bank is cashed in, like, anywhere, anytime.

Hey, Edge can have the world championship anytime he wants it.

Immediately, the champion is put in a perilous position by a challenger that can come out at any time.

Constant peril is good television.

After biding his time for over nine months, Edge started a new trend, cashing in the first-ever money in the bank contract at New Year's Revolution

2006.

You have a year to do it, but of course you'll tell us when you're gonna do it.

You're not just gonna come out after someone's just been brutalized.

That's not fair.

Unless, of course, you know, you're the ultimate opportunist who will take advantage of whatever is presented in front of him, and that just fit into Edge's character so well.

Nobody goes anywhere.

This night is not over.

Raise the cage.

I didn't know money in the bank would be this until I handed that briefcase over to Vince.

And I felt the audience come to this realization.

Edge is cashing in when John Cena is at his weakest.

Man, that's such a cool, fun moment to look back on anytime you do those firsts.

Any time, any place, Edge is our new WWE champion!

Even Edge admitted later that, yeah, money in the bank, kind of a good thing for his career.

Edge's successful cash-in on John Cena set the blueprint for the star-making potential that the contract held.

And as money in the bank continued to evolve, the spotlight would shine even brighter on the annual showcase.

A running sitcom!

With the multi-person-type ladder match that we kind of had put on the map with the Hardys and the Dudleys, and now for it to see it to morph into this money in the bank, I was, like, super

happy with what the match had become.

He's got it!

Money in the bank was the highest point of my career at that point.

When all that was real and tangible, I felt like I was on top of the world.

WrestleMania 24 in Orlando, I came up with the idea of doing a moonsault while I'm holding a ladder.

People thought I was crazy.

Yeah!

Oh, my God!

A moonsault with a ladder!

When I watch it back sometimes, I think I was crazy.

While the matches were chaotic, the ensuing cash-ins were even more shocking.

The bandit finally pulled off the big one!

The energy when someone cashes in the money in the bank contract is unlike anything else in sports entertainment.

The ultimate opportunist has done it again!

When you see a championship match and that contract is still live, boy, is somebody gonna cash it in tonight?

These fresh match innovations were wildly successful and became staples of the ruthless aggression era.

However, not all new concept attempts were home runs, as some left audiences scratching their heads.

At the Great American Bash, Paul Bearer will find himself in a most terrible situation.

There was a guy on the writing team who somehow came up with a concrete crypt.

We're good to go.

I heard Michael Hayes, like, hey, we got the concrete crypt all ready to go.

Just put it, Paul, into the oatmeal.

I'm like, all right.

Good luck with that.

47 years in the wrestling business.

That could have been one of the worst things that I've ever been involved in.

Oh, my God!

You gotta take swings.

You're not always gonna knock him out of the park.

It has never been seen before in the Western Hemisphere.

What the hell is a Punjabi prison match?

I've heard of it.

You don't want to know.

Punjabi prison.

Another SmackDown idea.

Oh, my God.

Look at this.

It is an absolutely awe-inspiring structure.

I was just like the rest of the audience watching it, going, what, is that straw?

Like, what is this thing?

Is that a hut?

Each door will be raised when called for by a competitor.

The door will remain open for only 60 seconds.

It looked incredibly awkward.

It was tough to climb.

The concept and the idea was probably cool in their minds, but then when you actually see it and try to execute it, it makes it incredibly difficult.

Those guys had a tough night cut out for them.

The Punjabi prison, just like the Elimination Chamber, unforgiving as hell.

Oh!

Because it wasn't made out of bamboo, it was made out of steel that looks like bamboo.

Undertaker driving Big Show's back and skull into that structure.

We had the one cage, and then the doors opened, and you get out, and then you've got to escape another cage.

If it's too hard to explain something, chances are you need to simplify it a little bit or abort.

While their track record certainly wasn't perfect, keeping things fresh in the ever-evolving world of sports entertainment

was key to WWE's growth.

And with all the incredible advancements in technology in the new millennium, WWE would once again change with the times, creating a groundbreaking way to engage the

WWE universe in the fall of 2004.
