Probably the biggest storm of the season
so far.

I just got the call that there was
potentially a baby rhino born inside of

habitat.

Windshield wipers are going and the
adrenaline was really high.

Oh my gosh, look, there it is.

This has never happened overnight on
Habitat before.

Hey little baby, you're so cute.

So sometimes the job just throws you a
wild card and you kind of have to just

roll with the punches.

Just an interesting night to be born.

Hey guys. Hi.

Got a new baby, huh? Yeah, very
exciting.

Last night, right in the middle of a
thunderstorm, Aleike surprises with a

calf.

Aleike is about middle age. She's around
20 years old, and she's been at the zoo

for many years. She's had all three of
her babies here.

Well, let's take a look at this little
kid.

Hey.

Hi, Mama.

Oh, there she is.

Good morning, Munchkin.

Oh, my gosh.

Even though Aleike is an experienced
mom, this is the first time we had a

born out on the habitat.

We want to make sure she's hitting all
the milestones.

The calf looks alert, walking around,
and Mama is paying attention.

They're starting to build that bond.

Hi, baby.

You're so cute.

Okay, good job, Mama.

Look at those ears.

You're such a good mom, Aleke.

Aleke is kind of letting the other
rhinos know that this is my calf. You've

to keep your distance.

Mom's protecting you. Being very
protective, doing exactly what she

But the calf looks great, right?

That's crazy.

That's my baby.

Baby is super small. She's also really
funky.

She's your mom.

She was literally born in the middle of
a thunderstorm, so she, I think, will

have that little sparky personality to
her.

Hi. I love the first introduction with a
new calf.

It's great, and you start building that
trust and relationship right away.

Southern white rhinos have really been
hit by poaching really, really hard.

I think of my son and all the kids we
engage with here at the zoo.

and I can't comprehend them inheriting a
world without rhinos.

So every time we have a birth, it really
is a sign of hope that we're continuing

the fight to ensure that there's a
bright future for white rhinos.

What a great day.

Our macaw flyover is an amazing daily
experience.

Our macaws actually fly out of their
habitat over where guests come into the

park and then land there for a really
good viewing opportunity.

The macaw flyover is one of my favorite
parts of my day.

Pina is one of our blue and gold macaws.
She is a little over eight years old,

and she has a chronic heart condition
that we noticed a couple years ago.

She's been on medication for it.

Recently, she hasn't been doing as well
in the flyover.

So today we're bringing Peanut to the
hospital to make sure that everything is

looking as it should.

Because birds are so good at hiding
their illnesses, it's a little bit nerve

-wracking. What if we find something
that we weren't expecting, or what if

heart was a little bit worse?

Hey. Good morning.

Hey. Hey, bird.

So I'm just looking to see how she's
breathing. I mean, she looks pretty

Yeah. The main thing with Pina is to
make sure that she's healthy to continue

fly, even though she might be flying a
little bit lower.

Today we want to supplement Pina with
some oxygen.

She's strong.

And then I'm going to try to get some
blood from her.

It's okay.

That's all I need. I'm going to let her
go, and I'm going to send that blood so

that, you know, we can tell internally
her liver, her kidney, all that looks

good on her.

Good girl.

I think we hurt her feelings more than
anything else.

I know. I'm sorry. And I think let's see
what the blood shows.

Maybe we can work her up even further by
doing x -rays and all that kind of

stuff next time.

I'm hopeful that the bloods are going to
come back with positive signs.

Paddington ready for his treatment?

Ready as he'll ever be.

At Zoo Tampa, we have a manatee critical
care center where we rescue, rehab, and

release injured orphan and sick
manatees.

We recently got in a manatee from Tampa
Bay area.

Still cold.

He was rescued out of Bear Creek, so we
decided to name him Paddington after

Paddington the bear.

He's in a good spot.

All right, buddy.

Paddington came in to us with these
propeller wounds from a boat strike

The other part of his issue is also what
we call cold stress.

When we see a manatee come in with cold
stress, one of the first things that we

see externally, at least, are skin
lesions.

This is a beta dye, so it's just a nice
disinfectant. It can prevent both

bacteria and fungus.

Can I rinse his tail? Yeah.

So, unfortunately, Paddington's tail
looks pretty rough. Is that his bone? I

don't know.

Paddington, because of his cold stress
lesions, has developed these wounds in

his tail that have ended up sloughing
away and causing defects.

So we have two little semicircular areas
that are actually missing from his

tail. And the biggest concern with him
is that one of those defects is right

over the very end of the tip of the
spine that extends into his tail.

There's a chance that that bone is also
compromised and he could lose that bone

as well.

Ugh, poor guy.

We didn't do x -rays of his tail. We
should add those.

Where we can see that there might be
some exposed bone is actually a pretty

concern. So the next step that we're
going to do is schedule some radiographs

that part of his tail so that we can
look at that bone and make sure there's

signs of any issues that we need to
address.

I'm going to give it a little bit of
time.

Paddington's really severe, pretty
critical.

We are very worried about him at this
point.

We have 10 different species in the
primate loop from all over the world.

And what's so cool is they get to hear
and see each other.

Today's a really big day. We're going to
get a new member of the primate family.

We're getting six Tomadreus baboons from
the Prospect Park Zoo in New York.

I'm going to be right here. Once I'm in
there, I'm not coming back out.

This is a species we haven't worked with
before.

We're very excited about it. They're
really, really cute from the pictures

we've gotten.

I see the truck. It's coming.

Primates to all units. We will be
unloading.

the baboons behind the old chimp night
house. If you could please keep the

service road clear.

I got your suit for you, Dan.

We're putting on some special protective
outerwear so that we are protected from

any potential contamination.

Once they clear their quarantine, this
will no longer be necessary.

The quarantine process is very important
to the baboon welfare, but it's also

important to the keepers that take care
of them, in addition to the primates

that live near them.

I'm really nervous. I don't know why,
but I'm just like, it's exciting.

Yeah. It's a good nervous.

Baboons are super agile and athletic.

They're really intelligent.

Can we take a peek?

Absolutely.

Okay, I'm going to open up when you give
me the go -ahead.

Angela will be inside, Jane will be
outside, and then Dan and I will be

up the crate along with the transporters
as well. They'll help us out getting

those crates in place. And then at that
point, it's a whole lot of just good

coordination and communication to make
sure we're all on the same page.

waiting for this day to get here, and

homodrized baboons, and it's awesome.

We're just getting our first look at
them, and we're looking forward to

to know them better and pretty soon let
them out to their outdoor habitat.

Humidized baboons are a really cool old
-world primate species. They come from

regions of Africa.

There are six boys coming to us, ranging
in age from 2 years old to 11 years

old. They're loud.

They're really boisterous.

I think they're going to be kind of the
tough guys of the block.

And here I am.

Tulu.

He's very impressive.

And he's easy to identify because he
has, like, two white stripes that come

We're going to have a lot of jostling
for positions as the young ones grow up.

I really can't wait to

get to know each one individually.

They're good. Open.

They're kind of exploring that space,
but also talking back to each other.

I'm here. I'm here.

For

us,

it may seem kind of scary and unnerving,
but that's great to see a lot of

natural behavior that we look for.

Now that they're all together, they're
going to get reacquainted, they're going

to settle in.

We'll start to get to know them over the
next few weeks in quarantine.

They'll be out on habitat pretty soon.

It's going to be a big change because
the habitats are going in and we have

refurbished. It's our old chimpanzee
habitat.

We'll be best friends with them by the
end of 30 days.

A lot of people come to the zoo to see
the elephants and hippos.

But down in our building, we have a lot
of cool little unique species that

nobody really sees too often.

Ranging all the way down to little
snails, all the way up to some of our

green morays and big groupers.

He's pretty far up there.

That's sort of his bedtime thing where
he puts the shell down over his eyes.

We have a giant red hermit crab. He's
new to the zoo.

His name is Eugene.

He's pretty cool because it's the first
time this species has been here.

He definitely seems more active at
night.

Yeah, he has been.

Coming in the morning, he's kind of in a
new spot. A lot of people don't realize

how much personality and intelligence
that crabs are actually capable of.

They're just an amazing, amazing animal
and endlessly fascinating.

Kind of an iconic Florida species.

Oh, yeah. People love seeing these guys
on the beaches.

Probably the most iconic thing about
hermit crabs is the fact that their

is very soft, very vulnerable, so they
need to drag a shell around with them,

essentially, as their home.

I know he molted last week, so I'm
thinking he probably is looking for a

home. So whenever they molt, they need a
bigger home, and they need to go find a

shell that's... That's a size up. I want
to give him more options. I think those

other shells over there are just a
little too big.

Do we have any more shells?

If you want in the back area, we'd have
to go look.

Okay. What Eugene and really any hermit
crab is probably looking for in a shell

is, first of all, one that's fairly
complete, doesn't have any large holes

it, because obviously the point is
protection.

Also one that is still tight enough that
he can block the entrance with his

claws and be able to defend himself and
hide from predators.

He needs a move -in ready home for sure.

Hey, buddy.

I think it would be really cool to see
him switch shows.

Oh, look.

It kind of looks like he's measuring it
up. It's a measure for dreams.

So we've provided him with some home
options, and he can kind of shop around

see what he wants, and hopefully he'll
choose one.

That might be the perfect shell farm.
Yeah.

This morning I'm going to be giving our
mantis their breakfast.

They're hungry.

Their closest relative is the elephant.

They have what's called a prehensile
lip, so it's just like an elephant's

where they're able to actually reach out
and grab the food, just like an

elephant can do with its trunk.

Manatees overall are a pretty docile
animal. They actually have no natural

predators.

Their biggest threat are people.

Between boats and habitat loss, they
definitely have a lot of things against

them.

I don't think people realize that each
manatee has its own personality, and we

get to know them.

They're such fighters, and we get to
watch them really thrive, and it's neat

watch them grow up.

If you spend 10 hours of your day
watching an animal, you're going to

they are.

Good morning, Molly. Hi. How are you
doing? Okay.

Today we're going to be getting an x
-ray on Paddington's tail.

I know Dr. Melissa was concerned.

Yeah, and the tail looks like there's
some bone exposure.

Yeah. One thing that is becoming of
concern is that on his paddle, the soft

tissue has fluffed so much that the
bone, the vertebra, is starting to

I can come up a little if you want. What
can happen is infection takes hold.

It could actually cause lysis or the
bone will start to eat away.

So I'm going to use our x -ray unit
today to try to get some baseline

information and see if there's already
some lysis happening.

He still looks pretty poor, so he needs
some attention.

He definitely is a mover, so here he
goes.

Generally, manatees don't like being out
of the water, so they don't always sit

still for us. Paddington, in general,
really likes to move his tail often, so

I'm not really sure how still he's going
to be for his x -ray today.

All right.

He moves along.

He said I was lifting it for him. I
know. I wasn't fast enough. I was

out.

Paddington is flopping around his
paddle, and that makes it a challenge

need him to sit still for the x -ray.

Stop moving your tail.

I didn't have to time it just right.

It's all right, Paddington. I'll put my
calming hands.

These x -rays are fast now.

get out of the way.

one up more, a little more cranial, and

On the x -ray today, I'm going to be
looking at the very tip of his tail.

I do think that this bone looks more
lytic or it looks lighter.

If this does not heal over and granulate
and get nice good tissue on it, then we

might have to look at just taking that
piece off.

Because if not, it could, like, go
further in.

Like, would you have more problems? I
think the concern would be is if it got

really infected.

Okay. Because what you don't want is
infection getting into the bone, and

it starts to ascend upward. Sure.

We know he's dealing with a nasty
infection, so I'm going to change up his

antibiotics. I'm going to go a little
more aggressive on an antibiotic that

more bone penetration.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this will
start to heal up.

He's a lucky guy, actually. He is. That
is a word.

Lake A's baby girl is now just over a
month old.

She doesn't have a name yet. We're still
working on that. So for the time being,

she's Baby A.

I can throw her something if you want to
get the gate.

Today we're going to let Baby A do a
creep session, which is where we allow

baby the opportunity to come over and
hang out with keepers, get some

have some bonding time with us.

But she also has the option to go back
to mom if she chooses.

Oh, she's ready. Okay, well, don't wait

Baby's already going. She's excited.

She said, bye, Mom.

Creep sessions are one of my favorite
things ever. I don't get to go in with

rhinos very often.

Oh, my goodness. You want some rubs?

This is why we do this job.

Like, literally.

Yep. And friends like you.

They grow very big, very quick, so you
only have a month or two to really get

this opportunity. So we try to do creep
sessions very frequently, and when I

suggest a creep session, nobody argues
with me.

Mom's doing really well. She doesn't
seem to mind.

I don't seem to mind.

Not at all.

The first thing we look at is mom. If
mom is worked up, then we're stopping,

because if mom's worked up, then baby's
going to get worked up.

The other thing we look at is baby's
demeanor.

She seems really comfortable,
comfortable enough to lay down and

belly.

It's time to go be a rhino again, okay?

She doesn't want us to go. Like, what?

We should probably stay longer.

Yeah, for creep sessions, I would rate

Absolutely.

I'm maybe a little bit biased, but I
feel like the primates are some of the

fun animals to watch and interact with
at the zoo.

They are the ones that are most like us,
and people can really relate to.

I had never wanted to do anything except
work

with primates.

When I was four years old, I saw a
National Geographic magazine that had

Goodall on the cover, and so I decided
then that that's who I was going to be

when I grew up.

She's not going to let you get it, Gojo.

Over 17 years here at Zoo Tampa, I've
seen a lot of different primates come

go.

Hey, Jamie.

Where's Twiggy?

For 15 years, I worked with the chimps,
Jamie and Twiggy and Nick. Twiggy, come.

They were a huge part of my day every
day.

And it was a really difficult change to
see them leave, to have them move on to

a different phase of their life.

Good.

It's still really strange to go by the
chimp habitat and not see them there.

Even though they've been gone for over
two years now, I still really miss those

guys.

But having the new baboons in there and
having something so different is going

to be kind of a good change, and it'll
be full of life and just a lot of fun

getting them to be part of our zoo
family here.

I think that's good, yeah?

Time to shift out some baboons.

We're getting ready to put the baboons
on habitat for the first time since they

arrived.

They've been inside on quarantine, so
they're going to be happy to get some

fresh air.

Those kids need to get rid of some extra
energy. Yeah.

Quarantine period has been really good.
It's given us a lot of time to kind of

learn each individual and get to know
their different personalities and quirks

and really form that relationship.

You ready for us?

Yeah.

Tulu, I think, knows something different
because he wasn't himself this morning.

Tulu is the dominant male, so he kind of
rules everything within the group. So

if he goes out, everyone's going to
follow him.

You guys are going to be operating the
chute door and everything?

Yeah, that way they all go through that
chute. Yeah. Okay. Sounds good.

You guys want to go outside?

You ready?

Yep. All right.

Everybody is all eyes on the door
waiting to see all six baboons come

out. Hi.

They are getting kind of loud. Sometimes
the vocalizations can indicate that

they may be having a disagreement, but
these vocalizations sound more like kind

of excited and a little bit nervous.

Watch nobody come out.

If they don't come out at all, it'll be
disappointing for us because we were so

excited to see them outside.

They're nervous.

There's the Tulu. Hey, Tulu, you're
supposed to be the brave one.

They're all at the gate, but they're all
too nervous to come out. We think that

Tulu is going to lead the group outside.

But lo and behold.

Tulu probably had Wawa go out first just
to check out the space. If something

happens to Wawa, then Tulu knows.

So our bachelor group here consists of
Tulu, who is the father of Boga, Kwame,

and Samburu.

And then we have a brother pair that is
Wawa and Salar.

They are really

active on habitat. They're really fun to
watch.

So I think guests are really going to
enjoy watching them.

They have needed to get rid of this
energy.

Look at little Solara over there. She's
so cute.

She still does fly kind of low.

Last time we took a look at Peanut.

She flies lower compared to the other
animals.

So that we think there might be a heart
issue.

We got her blood work back, kidneys,
liver. She doesn't have an infection.

All that looks good.

Now my next step is to do the x -rays.

All right, ma 'am. All right, all right,
all right.

All right, all right.

Because Peanut's heart condition is
something that I'm conscious about, we

want to keep her under anesthesia too
long.

I'm going to get my x -rays as quick as
possible.

So what I'm focusing on the x -rays is
just to see, is her heart big? Is her

heart small?

Do I have something abnormal inside her
chest?

That's pretty good.

All right.

Enough.

So this is her heart in here, okay?

And normally my cause...

have like an hourglass shape, you know,
to the heart and liver.

My first impression, I don't see
anything obvious.

It's not like she has a humongous heart
or a tiny little heart.

They just keep doing what you're doing.

Take another x -ray in six months a
year.

Okay. It was very much a relief to hear
that Peanut's heart was still looking as

we expected, and she's cleared to be
back in the flock in the flyover.

Oh, you're such a good girl.

There you go.

Okay, okay. Cool.

Let me know when she's flying and if you
have any questions about what she's

flying, but I would love to see her fly.
That would be great if I can go ahead

and go with you and take a look at her.

With any animal, we're always trying to
figure out what might be wrong.

And many times there's nothing wrong
with the animal. It's just that's her

personality. I think, yeah, we're going
to accept it as this is going to be

Peanut. She flies low, she likes to fly
low, and she enjoys life flying low.

All right, well, thank you so much. No

We gave Eugene, the hermit crab, a new
shell that we found. We put it in there,

and he actually seems pretty interested.

The fact that he's got his chelopeds, or
his claws, down in it is kind of a good

sign he might be starting to clean it
out.

So he's got to have it all ready and
good before he can move in, if he

it's good enough to move into.

They do tease a lot. Sometimes they'll
check a shell out and then nothing.

He changed shells one day and we all got
excited and then he just moved back

into his old shell.

Hermit crabs do not like to change shell
in front of people, in front of other

animals.

It's a very vulnerable moment for them.

Eugene changed shells.

So he finally made a decision.

Here's the old one that he was in
before.

It's got that black rubber tip on it.

And seems to be enjoying his new house.

Looks like this new shell met all of
Eugene's criteria on his house hunting

list for tour.

I'm glad to see you're all set now.

I'm always very happy when I can help an
animal get a better home and stay

healthy and happy.

Today I'm going to go check in on the
rescue manatees that we have here at the

zoo.

This is Paddington hiding under here.

He's been doing awesome.

His wounds are healing up really, really
nicely.

Paddington's looking fantastic.

You can see he's kind of getting a
little more active.

He's got such staff now.

He's been doing awesome.

Manatees are incredibly resilient, and
believe it or not, they still swim super

well when they have significant loss to
their paddle.

So in this instance, I'm actually not
really, really concerned that this is

going to impact Paddington's ability to
swim.

You want to go check on someone else?

Yeah.

He's healing up beautifully.

Yeah.

I'm hoping he can do some manatee magic.

The baboons have been here for a little
over a month now, and quarantine is

finally over.

Today is the first day that we're going
to be introducing guests into the mix,

so it's going to be really exciting that
guests are going to be able to

experience this new species that we
have.

This is definitely a

huge moment.

It's been a privilege getting to know
these baboons. They had a whole other

at their other facility, so the
adjustment of coming here is different

They've come a really long way, and
they're really doing well.

Their appetite is something we learned
in quarantine.

Hamidryas baboons, at least our boys,
love food.

I didn't think about it. Oh, boy.

We had no idea what to expect when the
baboon boys got here.

Look at them. Look at them. Oh, my gosh.
Wow.

Getting to know them was exciting.

We weren't sure how they were going to
respond to their environment and what

their personalities were going to be
like.

I just really have fallen in love with
these baboons.

The guests are never going to leave.

There's just too much fun out here.

Baby's ready.

Lakey's baby girl is now just over a
month old. She has been named Daruba,

means storm in Swahili, because she was
born during a thunderstorm.

We're going to call her Ruby for short.

Ruby's going to go outside for the first
time today.

Let's hand it off to mom for comfort
level, so this could be a really quick

outing.

The lake is mist going out. I mean,
she's been inside because of her

but now she knows what it's like

Rhinos have very poor vision. Their eyes
are very small compared to the size of

their body.

They're also on the sides of their head,
so that creates a lot of blind spots.

So she just needs to remember that now
she has a little mini -me that needs to

Once they kind of settle out there,
we're going to get everybody else out

them to do a big family reunion.

This is a big milestone.

Ruby can be in the rotation to go

During the day, she can now go outside
and public can see her and she

can stretch her legs and get... In

We're ensuring a bright and long future
for rhinos. One day she'll grow up,

she'll have a crash of her own, and have
similar calves of her own as well.

I love her.

This means everything to us here at Zoo
Tampa.

It's been a few weeks since Peanut has
seen Dr. Nico and gotten her all clear

be up and flying again with the rest of
the flock.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to our
macaw flyover. I'm pumped, but I haven't

seen Peanut flying, you know, for a
while now.

You're good to send a five.

Macaws are very loud animals. In the
rainforest, it's very, very dense. So if

you listen closely.

Which one is Pina? Because I cannot
recognize her. There we go.

Yeah, that one over there. You cannot
tell from, you know, how she's flying

the other ones. Awesome.

At this point, she's doing really well.

We'll just probably maybe once a year do
another checkup on her. But the way

she's flying is just like I'm as healthy
as everybody else, and you cannot tell

that I have a problem.

I don't know if I will ever get
desensitized,

you know, to that experience.

That was freaking cool.

I have seen them in the wild.

Never this close. That was really close.

That was really neat.

There's a lot of people that won't be

know that the guests really enjoy seeing

I got Paddington over here with Remy and
Pebble.

Awesome. Yeah, he's looking really good,
eating, moving around, being social.

When Patty first got here, he was pretty
sick.

But as he's getting better and healing
up, we are noticing that he's got a lot

of funk in him.

Yay, graduating.

What a big boy.

He looks really, really good.

Once an animal is not under treatment on
a daily basis anymore, then we're able

to shift them out front to our larger
pool.

I'm so excited for him to go out in the
front pool.

All the new friends.

It allows for them to swim more and
interact with more manatees.

And it's great news that Paddington is
ready to graduate and go up front today.

So what we'll do is we'll open and let
them actually come in here.

It usually takes them a minute to figure
out what's going on. They don't know

this gate and they've never been out
here.

Go, Paddington, go!

Looks like Titanson is figuring it out
that he can go out front and explore a

whole new habitat that he's never been
in before.

He's able to use his tail really well.

better from here on out.

We'll be able to release Paddington in
the future and get him back to the wild.
