shorter than my knee.

They are super cool.

I'm hoping they come out and eat all
this before Zach, the okapi, comes out.

Zach is an okapi, which is a relative of
the giraffe.

Most of us don't even realize that we
have Bay Diker in the okapi habitat.

Much less three of them are in there.

Itty bitty little quiet roommates of his
that tuck away during the day. And if

you don't have the right eye, you're not
going to see them.

Hi. This is Volpe. These guys are super
shy.

I know. It's very loud.

Do you think your daughter will come out
if I go get her?

Volpe is the mom, Archer is dad, and
Maple is the baby.

Maple!

The word diker means to dive, and that's
what they do. They dive under bushes.

They don't want to be seen.

Where'd she go?

So in the yard, we have a couple areas
where they can do that dive behavior,

they hang out there quite literally all
day.

Hi, will you come out?

Archer and Volpe have had, I think, five
kids.

They are like clockwork.

I think we might be gearing up to have
another one.

So I suspect she is pregnant just based
on when Maple was born and how long

duikers are pregnant for.

I can't do an ultrasound. She's way too
skittish for that. In my heart, I think

we're going to have a baby.

Bay duiker babies are one of the cutest
stinking things you will ever see. They

are itty bitty, super cute, super cute.

They're really stinking cute.

We're going to keep our eyes open,
especially over the next couple days.

Because I really think a baby's coming.

Today we're going to be vaccinating one
of our orangutans, Gojo, for a second

dose of COVID -19.

Gojo!

There you are. Good boy.

So we've had a number of zoos report
positive cases of COVID -19 in their

animals. I think we have an incredible
plan in place to protect both the

and the people that work here and visit
here, including distance protocols, face

masks, and now our vaccine protocol for
the animals.

Good boy, Gojo.

One of the downsides of this specific
COVID vaccine is that the vial, once we

open it, is only good for 24 hours. So
we have to get 10 doses out to different

animals within 24 hours. It can be a
little bit of a scheduling nightmare.

That's what I've got for you.

Gojo is the last of the family group to
get his vaccination.

He's just six years old. Good boy,
you're blowing spit bubbles.

And he is not necessarily always the
first to catch on with the other

but he has done excellent with this for
the COVID vaccine.

Gojo was fantastic. He didn't even
flinch. He was such a big boy. And now

take that big sigh of relief because our
whole orangutan family is fully

vaccinated. He did such a good job. He

You know, any kind of training process
that has a potentially painful end

is really a hard thing to teach to an
animal. So the fact that our husbandry

this relationship with the animals, that
they can ask them to do these things,

is just astounding.

love working with Myrtle.

Getting to spend that time with her is
one of the best parts of my day.

First thing we have to do is bring her
inside.

Okay. Myrtle is a Siloaceae babirusa.
Say that five times fast.

Miss Myrtle, are you ready?

A babirusa is a wild pig species from
Southeast Asia.

There we go.

Today we're going to be doing enrichment
with Myrtle.

All right, so this is our feeder barrel.
This side has like really large holes.

that a lot of stuff will fall out pretty
quickly.

But on this side, we have one hole and
some of the smaller holes.

I know. She's not excited. Are you so
excited? You smell the peanut butter,

don't you?

Beberuses have excellent sense of smell.

They can smell things from really far
away, and they can smell things

underground as well. Got that? Are we
stringing this up first?

Yeah, let's get that up first.

If we just put the barrel on the ground,
she would probably just roll it really

fast, and all of the stuff would fall
out. All right, ready?

Instead, we're going to actually hang it
from a line that's across her habitat.

There we go.

And hopefully it'll take her a little
bit longer to get all the food out.

She pushes it this way. It'll slide
lower so she can get to it better.

We are constantly thinking of new ideas
to try to challenge Myrtle and all of

our pig species because they're very
smart.

So we try to engage them in different
new ways all the time.

We ready to make this thing yummy?

We're using peanuts, a little bit of
lettuce.

Apples, oranges, sweet potato.

Bavarosas are true omnivores. They will
eat pretty much anything.

A little bit of mealworms.

We're going to put some of the loose
stuff on top, hoping that it'll fall

the holes.

And then we're going to smear the peanut
butter around the outside in the hopes

that she'll kind of stand up on her hind
legs and be able to lick it off.

Wow, that really is a good adhesive.

Yeah. Let's let her out. All right. See
what she does.

Look, she's already getting it. Yes, she
is. She went straight for the peanut

butter. There we go, yeah.

She'll get every piece out of there for
sure.

Sometimes the animals are too smart.

Myrtle especially is just constantly
surprising me with how much she can

out in a short amount of time. Oh, she
might get it up against the rock. Yeah.

Would you consider this using tools?

Oh, jackpot.

So pretty soon I think Myrtle is...

is going to have to learn how to share
her enrichment.

Uh -oh.

We did just get really exciting news. An
eight -year -old male, Watson, he's

going to be coming to us from another
zoo to be paired up with Myrtle. She'll

show him the ropes for sure.

She is a great mother.

She's had three piglets so far here at
the zoo, but lately she's been a solo

pig. So we're really excited to have her
with a boyfriend.

I would say that was a successful
enrichment.

Absolutely. Love it.

I'll never forget the day when we
decided we were going to close.

COVID has had a huge effect on the whole
world, and our zoo was no different

than that. It had a huge effect for us.

When COVID -19 first hit humans, We
didn't have a lot of information on what

animals were susceptible. We knew that
mammals were susceptible, some of them.

Bonnie, come on, girlfriend.

All right, got her. So quick.

We were incredibly excited when we were
able to take part in this national

ability to vaccinate our zoo animals,
many of which are irreplaceable.

So we vaccinated a whole bunch of
animals. We started with the skunk.

And then we've moved on through many,
many different species. We still have

more to go, but it feels great to know
that we're protecting our animals. And

also feels great to be part of a bigger
study with this vaccine. All of our

information goes back to contributing to
helping all kinds of animals be

protected by this vaccination.

We are headed to give Quigley, the North
American river otter, his second

COVID vaccine.

I don't know how he's feeling. I'm
feeling a little bit nervous, though.

Fingers crossed.

Quigley did have a little bit of

regression after his first dose, but

Lucy is one of three Florida Panthers
that we have here at Zoo Tampa, and

lived here almost her whole life. She
was found as an orphan kitten.

Lucy loves people. She loves seeing
people, watching guests.

We've built a really strong relationship
with her over the last 15 years, so

she's really fun to work with.

Yeah, I mean, easy enough.

Next month is actually going to be her
15th birthday.

She's been here since she was around two
weeks old.

There are less than 200 panthers left in
the wild in Florida.

The leading cause of death for panther,
unfortunately, is being hit by vehicles.

When we redid our Florida section, we
really wanted to be able to educate

on the things that Florida panthers deal
with on a regular basis.

And that's where we came up with the
idea of a wildlife crossing.

Wildlife crossings are passageways
either under the road or over the road,

giving the animal the opportunity to not
have to dodge traffic.

One of our windows is actually framed
out as if it were a true wildlife

with messaging to help people understand
how important these crossings are for

animals and how many panthers,
unfortunately, get hit by cars every

they'll be able to see each other, but

Today we are going to vaccinate some of
our flying foxes. All right. Hopefully

this goes really, really smooth.

They're a bat species from Australia.

There are certain species that we have
found that are a little bit more

susceptible to contracting COVID, and
bats are one of those species.

Oh!

Here are they, little one.

Since bats like to hang upside down on
the ceiling, and our ceiling is about

eight feet tall, Colin and Evan are the
two tallest people that are going to be

assisting in the catch -up.

We're going to have to let him decide to
turn around.

Because these bats aren't used to being
handled, we're going to try to make this

as quick and gentle as possible.

Ridiculous.

It's going to be a little bit tricky.

Yep.

Be careful of his wing.

Whenever possible, we try to get our
animals to participate voluntarily in

medical care that they receive.

That is not always possible, however,
and the flying foxes need to be manually

restrained in order to get this vaccine.

Flying foxes, they kind of look like

puppies in the sky.

They have very cute little faces.

There is a stigma around bats, but bats
are great for the environment and pest

control and dispersing seeds.

a huge relief to have them protected

We are still in Baby Watch for Volpe,
our Bay Diker mom, over in the Okapi

you see him? Every morning I'm here, I

come and I walk the yard hoping to see a
baby.

I'm apparently very impatient when it
comes to babies.

Canelo, are you going to have your baby
today?

We get vets down to look at her. They
tell me 24 hours.

I've heard that for just over a month.

Babies are the best. Oh, my goodness.

Baby! So cute!

Having a bond with an animal that you
just saw be born is amazing because you

can start right from the beginning.

Fresh, fresh baby.

And that bond will continue to grow and
develop as that animal continues to grow

and develop.

This is why we do this job.

This morning we are on baby watch. So
Volpe is pretty obviously pregnant.

She's looking really round. So we just
want to keep an eye out.

and see if we see a little duiker in the
okapi yard.

In the past, when Volpe has had a baby,
sometimes it's actually taken us a

little bit of time to realize that
there's another baby there.

Bay duikers are incredibly small when
they come out of the womb, so they also

like to hide a lot. So the baby will be
kind of in hiding while the mom is

bringing food. That's what naturally
would happen in the wild.

So we might not even see the baby
running around for the first week or two

they are born.

Still got a really round belly, huh?

We can definitely see that Volpe is
still pretty round.

I'm assuming she still is pregnant. I
don't see any other duiker out here, but

she doesn't look any different than when
I saw her last.

bowls, even though they each have their

Maple is kind of all grown up now, so we
are definitely ready for another one.

Babarusa have a really special place in
my heart here at the zoo.

He has no care in the world. The word
babarusa actually translates literally

pig deer in the Malay language.

Good girl.

Babarusa are a vulnerable species you
find in the islands of Indonesia.

Now, we're looking at less than 10 ,000
mature individuals left, and that number

continues to decrease.

That's your favorite.

They're an incredibly unique species,
full of personality, really engaging for

the guests.

And a true, true ambassador for the
animals we have here at the park.

Are you ready to meet a boyfriend?

Watson the new babirusa has been living
next door to Myrtle for a few weeks now.

They know the other babirusa is nearby,
but they haven't actually interacted

with one another yet.

I think he's really going to like you. I
don't know if you're going to care

about him so much, but I think he's
going to be snitting with you.

They're only separated by this one back
fence, and there are some gaps in it. So

today's the day they're actually going
to be able to see each other through

those little gaps.

The food might help coax her into going
to visit him.

Honestly, I don't know what they're
going to do.

We're going to try to help Watson out as
much as possible.

All pigs ever think about is food. Where
can I find my next meal?

Is this food? Is that food?

Are you going to give me food?

So we're going to set up a little dinner
date. We're going to put Myrtle's food

right next to the fence where she'll be
able to see him as soon as he comes

over. Hey, guess what?

We've been building a relationship with
Watson and learning all of his quirks. I

He's very personable, so I really like
that he wants to come over. He wants to

be around us. Sometimes even we don't

I think it speaks volumes that Myrtle is
comfortable enough to ignore Watson and

continue to eat snacks with him nearby.

So I guess we'll do a few more of these
sessions where they can see each other

and talk if they want to, and then
eventually let them in the habitat

which would be crazy.

three more of our animals for COVID.

So Cynthia and I are going to walk down
to Siamang.

We are nearing the end of our COVID
vaccinations in the zoo. And next up on

list are the two adult Siamangs. All

Only our adult Siamang, Hutan and
Sensei, are going to receive their

today. Their offspring, Kazuki, is a
little bit too young to be able to stand

for a voluntary injection.

So how are you feeling about the parents
being ready today?

I really think that they're going to do
a good job. Devin has done an incredible

job working this behavior in a really
short period of time, quite honestly.

So I have high hopes.

We've been working really hard with them

first time that we're actually injecting

And then Kendra is going to do the

every training session, so we don't want

just watched what sensei did so we're

gonna see how this is gonna go but
hopefully our training and our trust our

relationship is enough to get her the

initial vaccine.

We are going to call this partial

What we did for them today broke a lot
of trust between us. So it's better for

them to get 75 % of the vaccine at this
point and the injection in three weeks

than it is to just get 75 % and not be
able to give them anything in three

know, we'll get them back up for their

second one in three weeks. All right.

We are at the tail end of all of our
COVID vaccines.

I, for one, will be really happy when
we're done.

It's been a long road to get here. We've
been doing this for quite a while now.

Vaccines are life -saving. And the
ability to have your immune system make

disease so that you don't die from it is

an incredibly exciting thing for medical
professionals.

Oh, panther crossings! We're really
excited to be taking a field trip to

Florida where we can check out a
wildlife crossing right in the heart of

country. Right there.

Wildlife crossings are a great way to
allow animals to safely cross either

or under highways to avoid traffic.

We're going to be kind of in the middle
of two panther hot spots and super

exciting because that is where Lucy, our
Florida panther, was rescued from, is

Big Cypress. Hello. Hello.

Welcome. It's so pretty.

So today we're going to be meeting a
couple of team members from the Florida

Department of Transportation.

They've actually built the Florida
Wildlife Crossings. And then we're also

meeting a gentleman from Epstop, and
they do the camera monitoring of the

animals that use the Wildlife Crossing.

Well, you want to go check out the
wildlife crossing? Yeah, let's do it.

right, let's go.

Let me close the gate so we don't let
any of the panthers out.

Wildlife crossings utilize fencing to
basically try to funnel those animals to

certain spot where they can safely cross
the roadway.

So here's the camera.

So FFLIP has about 150 cameras deployed
throughout the state of Florida, ranging

from Alligator Alley right here in the
south all the way to past Orlando.

Pull the case out and...

There might be something in there saying
hi to you, but it should be up and back

towards you. That should be fun. And
this is the fun part. So you can get the

camera out and... There's a lizard.

Oh, a lizard.

And then just go ahead and open it up.

We come in with the cameras and go into
specific spots to figure out where the

wildlife is crossing.

And then the FDOT team can come in and
build the crossing in the right place.

I'm really excited to see what they've
captured on camera.

I'm interested to see if they've seen
any panthers on the crossing.

Frogs and stuff are going crazy.

And then if you look closely where
you're walking here, you can see some of

tracks from the wildlife. Over there is
an alligator drag mark with the tails

dragged along there.

That's cool.

We're starting to see footprints.

There's some wildlife scat.

So I'm really excited to kind of see
firsthand what type of species are using

this crossing.

So just sort of a bunch of different
videos.

Oh, my goodness.

That's a big one, too.

There's the panther. That's a big boy.
You can see the panther's just casually

strolling.

He's for everybody.

Bear.

It's amazing how many animals are using
the Wildlife Crossing. It was built for

Florida panthers, but they've seen so
many other different kinds of species

using it.

Deer and raccoons, bobcats, bears.

Or lanky bears.

That's probably the most exciting part,
that not only are we just saving the

Florida panther, but we're preserving
all the animals that they live with, and

we are helping the ecosystem as a whole.

The wood stork. The wood stork, that's a
threatened species in Florida.

Part of our mission is to educate the
public when they come to the zoo, and I

think it's really great that we have the
opportunity to teach people that we can

do something pretty simple, and it will
hopefully save a lot of species in the

long run.

When we get the videos of the wildlife
utilizing the cross, it's like...

It's a win.

It's a big win.

We all talk about it every day at the
zoo, so being a part of it and to see...

It truly in motion is really cool.

We talk to our guests all the time every
day about wildlife corridors and

wildlife crossings. And it's really cool
to see proof that this is getting used

and really saving these animals' lives.

I'm setting up enrichment for Harriet
and Quigley. They're just getting a

ball with some of their diet, which is
some meatball.

and some fish in it so that they can
come out and swim around and play with

and have to work a little bit to get
their food.

We're really excited that we were able
to complete the COVID vaccine with our

otters, so we're going to go have some
fun and reward them with some

Fingers crossed for a success.

True. Knowing Quigley, though, I will
be. I believe in the otters.

So we got the enrichment all set up.
We're going to let the otters back out

habitat and have some fun.

It's definitely a team effort to come up
with most of our enrichment. So we've

had a line hung across the pool for
years. And over time, we just come up

more and more exciting ideas to
stimulate the otters and make them use

brains a little bit.

They definitely got a meatball idea out
there.

Oh, my gosh, they're the cutest things
I've ever seen in my life.

They figured out pretty quickly if the

for them, so they're really smart.

Otters are super fun. They're one of the
most playful social animals that we

have, and everyone loves them. Everyone
loves watching them.

We're really excited that now not only
the otters, but all of the animals on

COVID vaccine list have completed their
shots.

We worked really hard with their
training in order to voluntarily give

their vaccine, so we're super excited
that we were able to do that and that

animals are now protected.

The pandemic obviously affected
everyone, but zoo animals were actually

sick. We're just trying our best to
protect them.

I love watching them thrive.

This is definitely an enrichment of
patience.
