Here in New Tampa, we currently have two
drafts. We have a breeding pair. We

have our male, Stakhani, and our female,
Lillian.

We used to have only a bachelor herd of
drafts, so we only had boys.

Randall, come on.

Last year, we made the huge transition
sending out our two older boys and then

getting Lillian in.

Lillian's doing great this morning.

When we first got Lillian, it was a
little bit of a transition period for

She was a little bit more timid. She's
pretty approachable now, but it did take

some time for us to really just build
that bond.

Good morning. We've got some exciting
news.

Oh, yeah? What's that?

We were working with the SSP, and we
just secured recommendations for female

giraffes to come in and make friends
with her.

That's super exciting.

But the exciting thing is, you know,
Mike had been working on one female, and

he's coming back with two, so that's
incredible news. Wow.

Do you hear that?

We're going to have some friends.

Do we know how old they are?

One's just about three years old, about
her age, and then the other one is just

about a year old. So now we'll establish
our herd, and she'll be all set.

Giraffe species are going through what
we call kind of a silent extinction.

You don't hear a whole lot about threats
they're facing out in the wild, but the

particular species, the Maasai, over the
last few decades, we're looking at

potentially almost a 50 % decrease in
their population.

So to be able to start focusing on
Maasai giraffe is a great opportunity.

What is the Connie going to do? Oh, my
gosh.

He's going to go from living with three
boys to living with three girls in a

matter of a year. Poor guy.

The two Maasai giraffe coming in, their
names are Kylie and her sister's Tiana.

They're actually both going to come on
different days. Obviously, we've got a

few more adjustments to get them
prepared. They'll have probably like a

quarantine, and we'll go from there.
Being able to identify two females to

here to start building that fundamental
herd is perfect. It's exactly what

Lillian needs.

She can start building her confidence,
and then all three of them can kind of

grow up together.

Well, we've got some work to do, but
we're going to move pretty quickly on

getting him here to Tampa.

goodness. I can't believe that

there's six.

Yeah.

We have four clouded leopards that call
Zoo Tampa home. And today we are going

to be throwing a birthday party for Aya
and Shagoo.

Aya, Shagoo. It looks so good.

It's your birthday.

Clouded leopards are from Asia and they
live up in the mountains and in the

grasslands as well.

They are an arboreal species.

They have an amazing adaptation to where
their ankles can turn to completely

allow them to go down headfirst down a
tree. Good girl.

When Aya and Shagoo were born here at
the zoo, it was definitely a big day for

everyone. We were very excited.

Aya and Shagoo are really awesome
because normally clouded leopards live a

solitary life.

But these girls do so well together, and
watching them play and cuddle every

night is the cutest thing.

We are going to make a birthday cake for
Aya and Shagoo's sixth birthday.

That came out perfect. I know!

Now we're going to roll some meatballs
for some candles.

Yes. We often give blood pops or frozen
blood as an enrichment item, which is

something that can kind of stimulate
their natural behavior and something

they don't get often.

So hopefully they will really, really
enjoy it.

When we opened the doors, only Aya came
out. But this is Shagoo's choice if she

doesn't want to come out. Aya.

What is going on? It's your birthday.

Unfortunately, we noticed that Shagoo
wasn't really herself.

She was showing a lot of signs of just
not feeling too well.

Aya's really loving her cake right now,
and I am a little bit sad that Shagoo's

not getting a chance to enjoy it.

She says, I love Jessica. Good girl.

We're going to keep an eye on Shagoo,
especially throughout the day. We're

to have our veterinary team come check
on her with Lauren and create a plan.

We're hoping that we can get some
answers, and hopefully she'll feel

soon.

That's my girl.

We have three Binturong here at Zoo
Tampa.

Sully, our male, his mate Malati, and
their first offspring, Kartika.

I am going to do the afternoon feed for
the Binturong, and the biggest task of

each of these feedings is trying to get
them to wake up, so now that's the next

part.

Everybody looks asleep.

Binturong, their face looks kind of like
a cat, where they have these really

inquisitive eyes, really furry, fluffy
faces.

They have these really thick, muscular
tails, but then if you look at their

feet, it looks a lot like a bear.

But Binturong are actually more closely
related to a mongoose than a bear or

cat.

They're just such a cool creature. They
really are.

Oh, it looks like Sully's coming. He's
walking around the pond.

The Austronesian language that Binturong
came from no longer exists.

meaning all we have is kind of word of
mouth that they were named benturong

no history behind it. And that's why
benturong are more commonly known as the

bear cat.

They're a lot like a bear in the fact
that they can eat meat, they do eat

but probably 80, 90 % of their diet is
fruits, veggies.

They have a sweet tooth. They like
pears, bananas, blueberries,

Oh, goodness. Sully, look out.

These sessions are a lot of fun for me.
They allow me to spend a lot of that

quality time and really get up close,
and they're probably some of the

parts of my day.

Up here we have Malati, who's curled up
very nicely, looking really comfortable.

I guess she wasn't all that hungry.

Recently we've discovered that Malati is
pregnant, so now we're just prepping

for her birth and everything going on
with that.

Malati's looking a little bit rounder
than usual.

You can definitely tell she's pregnant.

It's been over 80 days, and the
beginning of her birthing window is

we're just keeping close eyes on her.

Kartika is over a year old, so it's been
a while since we've had a venturong

baby here at the zoo. So to say I'm
excited is an understatement.

All right, Miladi, any day now. I feel
like tonight might be the night.

Shigu, our clouded leopard, is not
feeling very good, not coming over for

and then she also has several vomit
piles, which leads us to believe that

there's something more going on than
just an upset tummy.

Shigu is feeling pretty terrible for her
birthday, and it's gotten worse.

All right, so we'll do hand injection in
here.

Go to sleep. Take her over. And then
we'll do radiograph, ultrasound, and

to try to figure out what's going on.
Okay. Perfect.

Here we go.

We're seeing a few different things with
Shagoo. She is acting very lethargic

and very uninterested in food.

We don't know yet what could be causing
this. She may have eaten something she

shouldn't have.

She may have just an upset stomach. And
she does have a history of occasionally

having GI problems that usually respond
to anti -nausea meds. So this is a

little different for her.

Okay. Sticking.

You're okay.

Got it all? I know.

and Chagoo have undergone a lot of
training and are very comfortable

for hand injections, which makes it
really, really easy for us to work with

them. Is the vomiting in here like add
to the worry? Yeah, it does.

She had an anti -nausea medication and
she still vomited multiple times. And to

us, it's a huge red flag that something
is wrong. It could be a physical

obstruction. and either their stomach or
their intestines, that's completely

blocking things from moving through, and
that would be a surgical emergency.

Hospital to Animal Duty.

Good.

We're transporting a clouded leopard
from Habitat to the hospital.

There's a lot unknown about what's going
on with Shagoo, so I'm really

concerned, and I'm just hoping it's
something easy to fix.

All right, I'm going to start catheter
first. Let's do blood next.

We're going to start right away with
getting a blood sample. We can run some

tests right next to the bedside and get
some information really quickly.

Okay. This is kidney values and
electrolytes. So nothing crazy there.

good. That's good.

Cute little ears.

All right. Let's do Brad's next.

Radiographs are going to be the most
important part for us to look and see if

there's anything obstructing her stomach
or her intestine.

Okay. Good.

All right, let's move up to the chest.

Now we're going to do the ultrasound
because that then goes with the

to give us a really complete look at
what's going on internally.

Everything is super bright around the
intestines, which sometimes can mean

inflammation around the intestines but
not in.

I don't know what this is, Lauren.

There's this spot.

Yeah.

And have lymph nodes around the
intestines.

So I'm not sure if that's what we're
seeing.

So far, we haven't really found anything
definitive with Shigu. We've done

radiographs and ultrasound.

Nothing's sticking out so far that I
know of.

It's a little more solid looking.

Yeah. So it really seems to be
obstructed. So that's encouraging that

isn't a surgical problem, but it's just
very bright and that makes me think it's

very inflamed.

We always hate seeing when an animal
doesn't feel well. They're like our

We want to make sure that they feel good
and have the best possible life, and we

definitely want her to feel better.

Okay, we did fluids. We did vitamin B.
We did ultrasound. We did bras. We did

blood. We got urine. We completed our
exam. We got our weight.

Okay.

At the end of Shagoo's exam, the
positive thing is nothing looks like an

immediate emergency surgery, which is
great news for Shagoo.

swallows and excavating.

After the exam, I'm still pretty worried
about Shagoo. There was no definitive

diagnosis, so there's always a what if
of what's going to happen next.

And so just hoping that things turn
around and she starts feeling better.

Not knowing the answer is always a
little scary.

Sorry, baby girl. She had a really rough
day.

Today is a huge morning.

We've been trying really hard to work
with the species survival plan to be

to have more breeding females here at
Zoo Tampa.

And the two new girls that we are
getting are two sisters. They're about

years apart.

The first draft that's going to be
arriving this morning is Kylie. She is

to be the older of the two. And then her
sister, Tiana, is going to be following

in just a couple days.

You're right, Lillian.

She looks a little anxious.

She might suspect that something's going
on, but we're super excited to see how

she reacts to another female. I think
just having companion friends is

definitely going to help kind of ease
her nerves and be a little bit more

natural for her.

There's a trailer. I know.

Naturally, female giraffes are going to
live with other female giraffes.

So we've been trying really hard to
bring more females to Zutampa just to

Lillian a little bit more comfortable.

It might take her a minute to come off
the trailer, but we'll leave the other

giraffe back so it might encourage her
to come out and say hello.

Over the next couple days with Kylie
coming in, we'll have the foundation of

giraffe herd moving forward. And then a
couple years down the road, hopefully

some successful breeding.

small giraffe, and getting her ready and

getting her here has been super
exciting, and now she's off the trailer.

After Tiana gets here in just a day or
two, we'll make sure that Kylie and

are introduced and they're settling in
all right. And once they're acclimated,

we're going to go ahead then and
introduce her to Lillian. So we still

few more weeks of work to do, but it's a
great first step.

Today, we're heading to the airport to
pick up a new animal that's arriving

at Zoo Tampa.

We're getting a female shoebill,
Storkin, from California.

Got our supplies.

She's en route.

Air cargo, here we come.

Currently we have a male and a female,
and these guys are just so enthralling

watch and see.

Chevelle Storks are one of those very
majestic animals that you just can't

your eyes off of. They're very
prehistoric looking, but just have a

grace and beauty to them. So to see one
is very much a treat because there's not

many in zoos and aquariums around the
world.

We're coming in. We are ready.

There's only five that are in the United
States, so now we're going to have

three of them, and hopefully one day in
the future we can have more offsprings

and have these birds for generations to
come.

Welcome to Tampa.

We have our new shoebill female loaded,
and she's ready to go, so we're heading

back to the zoo for everyone to welcome
her back.

We have arrived.

There are only five shoebills in the
whole United States, and we had two of

five, and it's mind -blowing to me that
we're about to have three out of the

five. Like, that was a long flight.

I know, right? Okay, so she's upright
and kicking.

That's a good sign.

She's got some fire in there. All right.

This is a homecoming for her, which is
really neat. She used to live here in

Tampa, so it's been a long time. She
went to San Diego from Tampa, and now

gets to come back home again. All right,
coming down.

She can be loaded up into our quarantine
facility, so she can have a quarantine

time before we introduce her to the
shoebill that we have here.

We're a little apprehensive about how
she did with the trip, and you never

really know until they come out of the
crate to see how it all went.

Oh, my gosh, she's gorgeous.

It's just incredible that this is one
out of five in the country. It's

cargo, and it's really exciting when we
see that animal come out.

Out we all go and give her a moment of
peace here.

Our new Shoebill will be in quarantine
for about 30 days, and we expect to be

moving her to another area of the zoo
soon.

Good job with that precious cargo.

She is an irreplaceable bird.

We don't know that much about them in
the wild, and so they've been a struggle

to get to reproduce.

But Zoo Tampa is the only zoo in the
whole United States that has hatched out

successfully shoebill storks. That is a
pretty amazing accomplishment, and our

goal is to do it again.

It's an incredible honor to be able to
take care of them here.

I would say Zoo Tampa is a place that
caters to animals.

The great thing are these nice open air,
lush habitats.

So I don't find it too surprising that
wild residents in the state want to come

and try to make home here.

Oh, hi, Joe.

We do have a visitor that we see often
here at the pools. It's a wild blue

heron. We call him Broken Toe Joe.

Joe, you've got to get your own food.

The majority of what we see here in the
park are some birds flying in and out,

but you have your occasional squirrel
and every once in a while even a little

gator.

All right, where's the baby gator?

It's in the lemur boat. We just drained
all the water out of it. This morning we

came in and we were checking out the
habitat and we found a little gator in

lemur boat.

Living in Florida, we have alligators
all over the place.

Sometimes they end up in our moats.

It's rough to be a wild gator.

I'll put them deeper in the pasture.

It's great as a resident Floridian to be
able to live in an area where it's a

lush tropical environment, but you have
some pretty incredible biodiversity.

There's a lot of wildlife that calls
Florida home.

There's little bits of pond out here he
can hang in.

For Pierce to do a scent scavenger hunt.

Pierce is our African crested porcupine,
and she is one of the most friendly

animals that you'll meet here at Zoo
Tampa.

I'm just going to go ahead and spray the
cone. We also done scented ones for

him. Yeah, we don't want him to get the
scent.

Today we're doing a new scent training
behavior to introduce into our daily

show. It smells like my ninth grade
dance. Yeah, it reminds me of a skate

Our ultimate goal is to have this be a
guest experience interaction. We'll

actually be able to choose a child out
of the crowd, and the child will be able

to tell where they want the cone placed
so that Pierce can go out and find the

scent. Maybe we'll just see if we can
walk by all of them.

Yeah. Pierce!

Scent is the main scent that porcupines
rely upon.

They don't have very good eyesight, they
don't have very good hearing, and

that's why their noses are so big,
because that scent is really how they

their food, how they find mate,
territories, all that sort of stuff.

So picking out one scent that is a
little bit strong should be no problem

her. All right, Pierce, get this.

The goal is that she will find and knock
over the cone that has the scent in it.

So hopefully she'll pick the right one.

Hint, hint. It's the one in the middle.

been working, and she's starting to

understand exactly what we're asking of

Miladi moved, and we saw a little paw
stick out of the fur, a little bit of a

She had twins.

It's really common for Binturong to have
one to six kits at a time, but from

what we saw on the ultrasound, we were
only expecting one. It makes me super

happy. I've wanted an army of Binturong
babies ever since we got these guys.

We're really excited. excited to have
twin babies. It means we get one extra

bintrung for our species survival plan.

And a baby bintrung is pretty much one
of the cutest things that you can

Hearing the little cries of the babies
is great. It means that they're awake,

they're alert, they're vocalizing. We
can hear mom interacting with them. It's

great sign that these babies are healthy
and alert and screaming for more food.

That second one did a good job of
hiding. Uh -huh. Oh, yeah. On

could only confirm one for sure, but
secretly, she had two.

She's got to go check on her older kid
now. Oh, so they have access?

It's going to be really important for
Kartika. So when she goes on and has a

family of her own, she's at least seen
mom do it with two crazy kids.

I'm so happy about these little babies.

They are very precious. Miladi's a great
mom, and it's a huge win for our Asia

team to have these little Binturong
twins.

They're so cute.

I've been a part of our ambassador team
here at the zoo for almost eight years

now.

I've been working in areas that are up
close and personal with guests, and

that's one of the things that I am most
passionate about.

We work really hard to train our animals
to be able to come out and meet our

I spend 40 hours a week here, and so you
can't even imagine how close you get to

these animals and how much they mean to
you in your life.

My grandma was an animal lover, and so
when I got my job here at the zoo and I

got to call her and tell her all of
these stories about the animals I worked

with, it was always amazing because she
would be so thrilled, and so it was

really exciting being able to share that
with someone that inspired me to love

animals. Good job!

So just imagining a 10 -year -old coming
to the zoo for the first time and

seeing how much that could change one
person's life is why I come to the zoo

every day and do my job.

How is Shagoo looking this morning?

When I first got here, she was pretty
lethargic still, but she seemed to perk

after I went in with her.

Okay, let's take a look.

Shagoo is feeling pretty terrible. We
did an emergency workup to try to

what was going on with her and didn't
really find any definitive answers.

But she is on several different
medicines right now to hopefully help

better.

She's definitely more reactive today,
which is... Look at you, local.

You're very chatty. Good morning.

We're really encouraged because she
looks better. She's much more bright.

wants to come over to us. She's doing
her normal check behaviors and talking.

Well, this is, like, way different.
Although she has diarrhea, I feel like

least she looks, like, brighter. Yeah.

That's encouraging.

I'm glad she's chuffing again.

When she chuffs, it means she's feeling
very positive, very comfortable, very

happy. She's talking back and forth to
you. It's really normal for her and her

sister Aya to just constantly chuff and
talk and meow and make these noises. And

when she's quiet, then you know
something's not right.

We got her on antibiotics last night.
The combination of the fluids and that

be why she's looking a little bit more
right.

The biggest thing would be if she's not
feeling well consistently would be to

repeat the radiograph.

Yeah. But she looked to me a lot more
comfortable than yesterday.

We're going to take it day by day, but
the next few days, as long as she keeps

improving, it's really going to be a
positive sign that we are headed in the

right direction.

If she starts going in the opposite
direction, then we'll repeat the exam

figure out what we need to do next.

Tiana arrived over the weekend, just two
days after her sister.

Over the last week or so, they all had
the opportunity to investigate and spend

a little bit of time with Lillian.

It's all just been over the top of the
walls in the giraffe barn. They haven't

actually shared the same space yet.

Lillian's like, what's going on?

This morning we're actually going to be
introducing all of the female drafts

together. So it's going to be Lillian's
first time hanging out with the new

girls. You're going to do good today,
okay?

friends.

Brandi and Lindsay, just be prepared to

These introductions are going to happen
on their terms.

Some of the things that we're going to
be looking for today are going to be

of like chest bumping or pushing, things
that we don't necessarily want right

away. We have people in place in order
to hold the giraffe at station if

decision of the giraffe whether or not

they want to share space together today.

out. This is also the first time that

the two new girls have been in this
space, not only with Lillian, but just

here in general. So I think they're very
overstimulated at the moment, but

everyone's doing really, really great,
though, all positive things so far.

Let's just kind of pay attention to what
Lillian's doing here. If we need to or

if there's an opportunity, we can always
separate them out.

Lily is kind of confused.

Yeah. She's, like, just taking it all
in.

I think Lillian is excited, but I'm sure
is also nervous. She's never had two

new friends living with her, so it's
just going to be kind of a waiting game

It's so weird to see this when you draft

Seeing the three giraffes together is so
exciting. You know, a year ago we went

from having a bachelor group of giraffes
to now having a herd of females here

and just one male. So we have a few
steps to take until we meet our next

milestone, but this is a great start.

Just think, in a few years we could have
like our own little giraffe babies.

They're so cute. I can't wait.

The amount of change that's taken place
over the last year and the amount of

work that's gone into it is like so
rewarding to see it all coming to life

in front of us. And I'm excited for what
the future holds.

Today is the big day. Pierce is going to

We are having the guests participate in
this brand new behavior. So we're going

Lately, she's been doing a lot better.
So we're hoping she'll come out and

celebrate her birthday party today.

Shagu is feeling much better. We're

Right now, our diagnosis is still a
little bit open for Shagu. We're

her for a number of stomach issues, but
we're not sure yet if that's the primary

problem. But we're really happy with how
Shagu is doing, and she's responding to

all the treatment she's received so far.

get it, and that's just the way it is.

All that matters is that they respond to
the treatment that we give, and we get

them back to being healthy.

We're still not out of the woods. We

the underlying problems are so that we
can address those and hopefully cure her

of what's going on.
