made the mistake of separatin'
from the rest of the gang.

By the time they sobered up, I had
'em hog-tied and ready for delivery.

Well, now, taking 'em was one thing.
Holdin' on to 'em was somethin' else.

By the time the stage I was taking 'em
back to Montana on got to Lucas Pass,

- the gang was waitin' there to free 'em.
- What stage was that?

Lincoln, westbound.

Well, where is it now?

Colton took it with him.

There was supposed to have
been some mail sacks aboard.

Might've been. I don't know. I had enough
to do keepin' my eye on my prisoners.

Look, if you've just
got those horses to sell,

catch up with Johnny Colton.

can track Colton like me.

before he makes 'em.

couple hours' ride from here.

Maybe they spent
the night there.

Well, if they did, I hope
the settlement's still there.

use gettin' down off your horse.

How come?

The owner, Jim Coffee,
was killed yesterday.

Hotel's all locked up.

How'd it happen?

Well, some riders came in
a little before sundown.

Had a spring wagon with 'em,
needed some fixin'.

One of the wheels
was about to come off.

I told 'em it would take
a few hours.

One of 'em, looked to be the leader,
asked me if I couldn't do it sooner.

Said they was in a hurry.

And they... they went inside
the hotel to have a drink.

They looked nice
and peaceful-like,

just riders wantin' to mind their
own business, then go their way.

Well, about an hour or so later,
they began makin' a ruckus,

shoutin' and cursin' like they had too much
to drink and was about to start trouble.

Well, Jim Coffee always prided
himself on the kind of place he ran,

so he went inside and told 'em
if they didn't get quiet,

they'd have to go
someplace else.

They didn't like this. Said no one was
gonna tell 'em what to do or how to behave.

So they took Jim outside,

put a rope around his neck,

hung him right above
his own hotel.

After that, they just went wild,

riding in and out of stores,
breaking everything in sight,

shootin', burnin', killin'.

- See which way they went?
- North.

The spring wagon...
Did you see what was in it?

They had it covered. And someone
stayed with me to be sure I didn't look.
