The US is coming off
a really humiliating defeat

in Rome a couple of years ago.

And these are prideful guys.
The best players in the world.

The last thing they wanna do
is lose again,

have to wait another two years,
and to lose at home.

We have an opportunity
to play that same team this week.

They come into this arena,
they have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

that we had in the last Ryder Cup.

We have a WhatsApp group still from Rome.

I think it's gonna be a huge advantage

to have that continuity and to have,
obviously, a repeat captain as well.

- New York subway kind of vibes.

Yeah. I don't know.

Just told them to make me something cool.
That's what they came up with.

I'm so proud
that I've played four Ryder Cups.

I just go into them
trying to be the best teammate.

What would make me
the happiest about it all,

aside from the team winning,

is if, you know, one of my teammates
got asked the question

and they would say, "Tommy was
the best teammate that you could imagine."

I don't like
talking about myself that much.

But, like, I think I bring,
like, a lot of glue to the whole team.

And people laugh at me.
I'm always in the team room.

I'm always last to bed.
I'm always first up.

I love being there.
I love being around people.

This is definitely
the most united team ever assembled.

And obviously, that familiarity
that we all have with one another

enables us to focus on the job at hand.

We're ready for the shots.

The teams' makeup are very different.

The United States
have six rookies of their twelve,

so half of their team have never played
in this kind of environment before.

There's been this sense
in recent Ryder Cups

that the Europeans are better
just because they mesh better together.

And the Americans just have to find
some way to reverse that.

To take a dozen guys
who just play an individual sport

and are only ever
looking out for themselves,

and bring them together to play on a team

in one of the most intense environments
in all of golf.

I'm very excited.

I wouldn't even say necessarily nervous.

More just, like, anxious and excited
and ready to kind of get it going.

Yes.

It's gonna be awesome to kind of get
some advice from some of the other guys.

Learn how other guys
maybe strategize golf courses.

How they take on different golf shots.

Ben, Cam, and I,
we kind of know that we're the rookies,

so we're looking out for each other.
We pump each other up a little bit more.

I'm pretty nervous.
I want my game to feel tight.

I want to feel confident

because there's more people to let down
instead of just myself this week.

Did you ever actually dream
of playing in the Ryder Cup?

What was that level of belief?

Yeah, I did watch,
of course, Ryder Cups growing up.

Did I ever dream or think
I would be on a team? No.

You know, I think that kind of stems back
to self-belief issues.

And you know,
once I had my first daughter,

her favorite song was "Let It Go,"
and I just try to go by that mantra.

Can you sing it for us now?

Let it go!

Oh my God. So nice.

There's a lot of new blood on this team.

But the US has
an incredible, deep, talented roster.

They've got Schauffele,
who won two major championships.

They've got the best player in the world
in Scottie Scheffler.

We're a very, very deep,
very talented team. Very hungry team.

Just like I taught ya.

Seven of the top eight
in the world rankings currently

are Americans.

And with the home crowd support
behind them,

I think they… they are the favorites.

Bryson! Bryson!

For as competitive
as the Ryder Cup always is,

going back to 2014, all of the Ryder Cups
have been won by the home team.

And there's a couple reasons why.

Number one is the home captain having
the ability to set up the golf course.

Also, the crowd.

Yes!

You get the crowd on your side,
it's a very real thing.

You feel that momentum.
You get the support.

New York fans are incredible.

I couldn't be more excited
for the opportunity

to hopefully get them riled up
and excited for what's to come.

Scottie!

One of the biggest achievements
in the game is to win an away Ryder Cup.

The fans are gonna be loud,
and everybody expects it to be boisterous.

Well, I think it's New York, isn't it?

We all know how rowdy they can get.
How spirited they can get.

You know, that makes it, uh,
extra challenging for us.

But we have superstars on our team.

They've been in that environment before.

This is gonna be my seventh Ryder Cup.
Something that I'm… I'm very proud of.

Myself and Rory being
the only two guys on the team

that have tasted a victory
on foreign soil,

it's rarefied air.

Winning an away Ryder Cup for either team

has been a challenge
in the last couple decades,

so, um, I think that's what we're all
looking for, is a little advantage.

What advice have you given
to the younger guys?

Um, I'm very lucky.

I get support pretty much
everywhere I go when I play golf,

and, um, it's gonna feel
a little different for me this week.

So it's really just
trying to find the balance

of using that energy from the crowd
to… to fuel your performance.

But that's the challenge
of playing away, right?

- Hi, y'all.
- Hi! How are you?

- Oh my gosh!
- I love this.

- What?
- Waiting on my date.

- Okay. That's right.
- Whatever you say.

Seeing, you know, all these plans that
you pine over for months and months

come to life, it's just spectacular.

I think there's a ton of pressure on you
as the host.

And I think they care a lot
about doing a great job for Team USA.

The buildup has been enormous.

to be out there each day.

And it is the greatest spectacle in golf.

For the first two days
of the Ryder Cup, they're team matches.

So these guys play by themselves
throughout the whole year,

but in the first two days,
they need a partner.

And that's a huge decision
for the captain.

Fireworks in match one

with the powerhouses
of Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas

taking on Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm.

It's important
for the captain to get the energy right,

and it also has to make sense
from a statistical standpoint.

Their games have to be compatible,
but also their personalities.

As soon as a Ryder Cup week begins,
it's us against them.

And the scoring is winner takes all.

There are 28 matches over three days,
and therefore 28 points up for grabs.

All of the matches are head-to-head,
and each match is worth one point

or a half point awarded to each side
in the event of a tie.

Because Europe is the reigning champion,

they only need 14 points
to retain the Ryder Cup,

while the US would need 14½ points
to take it away from them.

As we get set for the afternoon session,

a glorious start for Luke Donald,

the European captain
who's trying to make history.

You felt the US were trying their hardest

to make that first tee experience

as loud and obnoxious and, um, supportive
of the US teams as much as possible.

You know, make us feel, um,
like we're… we're definitely the visitor.

There's a new spectator in the house,

the President of the United States,
Donald Trump.

Any time you see the president,
it adds a weight.

A feeling that doesn't exist
in a lot of sporting events.

You felt like
it was gonna give the whole team a jolt.

That's certainly
what Bradley's hoping for.

It's the dream scenario
for Bryson DeChambeau.

Gonna shake hands there
with the president.

And he's first to greet him
as he comes out of the tunnel.

President Trump's got golf shoes on.

If the Americans don't get
it going, the president might wanna play.

Walking out

it's one of the craziest moments
in my life.

I tried to keep myself
as calm as possible.

Well, if there was ever
a stage for a comeback, it was just set.

There is a sense of urgency
for the United States.

We opened the show
talking about American rookies

coming into a tough situation.

So far, they've all stood up.

Young is next to go at this par four.

Any point you earn
in one of those events is special,

but I think, you know,
I only get one chance at a first match,

and, you know,
I did my best to make it count.

Gets that club
in such a nice position at the top.

Oh, wow, what a shot.

for his fourth birdie in this match.

The rookies are finally
bringing some energy for the Americans,

and it's starting to look
like there's a little bit of hope.

What a debut into the Ryder Cup.

What confidence he's displayed.

This might make
Keegan Bradley think about,

"What do I do with Cam Young
tomorrow morning?"

And that will be conceded.

It is a victory for Cameron Young

We played so well,

and we felt like a victory like that could
just spark something in everybody else.

Certainly having
a better afternoon than morning,

but they needed to, didn't they?

I sort of remembered
a little bit like Rome.

I had a putt late in the afternoon
and was able to kind of hole it

and have that moment
where I shared it with the whole team.

I turned around. I was like,
"For you, for you, for you, for you."

And I kind of wanted this one for Tommy.

Justin Rose buries
another one for a winner.

The vision we had
for the day was kind of encapsulated

by being able to hole that putt on 18,

give each other a hug,
and come off victorious.

Yeah, it was huge.

Fleetwood finishes off a fantastic Friday.

Justin is somebody that I've looked up to
for a long time. I've learned from him.

It's always so cool to watch
how he plays when he's in contention.

And we will go into Saturday

with Europe comfortably in front,
5½ to 2½.

I mean, I'm pleasantly surprised
that we're… we're winning.

Um, that's obviously always the goal.

Foursomes are a tricky thing to get right.

It's like a puzzle
you're trying to put together.

There's lots of different parts to it.

Golf course,
personality matchups, statistics. Um…

Yeah, there's so much that goes into it.

And I think, you know,
if you spend enough time on it, um,

and obviously if it works out,
then you feel pretty smart about yourself.

There's a pretty big lead
after the first day,

but still a lot of points
to be played for,

so, um, we're just gonna keep
riding that momentum.

New York's starting to look like Rome.

Not the start at all

Well, they're already at it.

And Rory dealt with it on day one as well.

Everybody expected in the buildup
that the fans could be boisterous.

But all of a sudden, it took a turn.

No pressure!

Take all the time you need, Rory.
You're still gonna choke.

The American fans felt like
they probably had to come out

and try and help their team on Saturday,
We were so far ahead.

And, yeah, it was… it was interesting.

It was wild.

You want Ryder cups to be different.
You want them to be high energy.

You just don't want it to overstep a mark.

That bunker's looking tasty.

There was one moment
where Rory didn't hit that putt,

I think, for five or six minutes.

Easy putt! Easy putt!

He's backed off again.

It's one thing to give him
a hard time, but, uh, you can't do it

when the guy's over the shot.

Don't get angry, Shane.

When they started doing it
in our backswings

and started trying to properly put us off
when we were actually playing,

that really pissed me off.

It's funny. When you stand up to them,
they're very quiet.

Come on!

Just a combustible
situation out here right now.

Just the crowds
are amazingly involved in the process.

Some of the videos
that emerged were… were shocking.

There was this moment with Rory McIlroy
and his wife, Erica, walking past a crowd

and, all of a sudden,
a can of beer lands by Erica's head.

Yeah.

This becomes,
like, the dominant storyline.

In real time and even more so afterwards.

So I'm actually the one
that took this video,

and in real time, I thought
the same thing everyone else did,

that this was a beer thrown
from the crowd

at the European team.

But when I rewatched it,
slowed down, zoomed in,

it became clear that there's maybe
a more confusing narrative

that maybe the beer was accidentally
knocked out of somebody's hand.

But the reason everyone initially thought
it was an attack

was because there was
a pretty ominous feeling on the grounds

that I don't remember seeing
at another golf tournament. Ever.

This one has crossed
the line more than a few times.

It was against the spirit
of what we do in Ryder Cups.

And you could see it almost affecting

the American players
a little bit in a way.

They were trying
to hush the crowd as well.

You've had multiple instances

where Justin Thomas
has been trying to quiet the crowd down.

Temperatures and tensions can rise
at any given time in a Ryder Cup.

Plus, the atmosphere
that was created by the crowds meant

the players were on a knife edge
at any given point.

There was an incident where Justin Rose
was getting ready to hit his putt.

It's my putt here, boys.

Okay. Thank you.

Rose said it was his putt.

Well, yeah, that was
a heated exchange there.

Justin Rose just telling the caddie
of Bryson DeChambeau, Greg Bodine,

to get out of his way
as he was reading his putt.

Is he jawing at Rose?

It's gotten heated.

- Whoa!
- Whoa.

Golf has got a reputation
of being a gentlemen's sport.

And it wasn't a gentlemen's sport
on Saturday afternoon.

Come on!

I don't care what people call me,

because I'm a grown man.
I can deal with that.

And I think Rory and Tommy talked about
trying to win with excellence and class,

and, yeah, we tried to do that as well.

Come on!

It's not for me to say.

People can be their own judge
of whether they took it too far.

You know, I'm just proud of us
for being able to win, um, today

with, you know, what we had to go through.

If America's gonna win,

they need to change
that scoreboard in their favor.

This is not over. We know that.
Let's not jump ahead.

But it's good as over.

No, it's up.

- Never seen anything like it.

They were a heavyweight puncher
throwing punches at us.

And we were taking them
and giving back stronger ones.

Well, the only good thing we can say

from an American perspective
about Saturday at the Ryder Cup,

it's over.

That's it.

You know, when you accept this role, you…

you know the consequences
that come with it.

I was in the back room with the captains,

you know, staring at the score,

and it was sad to look at that score.

But, you know, I had a job to do
to go speak to the team.

I really had to, like…
really had to get my shit together.

I just reminded them
about how cool it would be

to tell your 16-year-old self that you
were going out to play for your country

at Bethpage Black the next day.

How far everyone in this room has come
to get to this point,

to even have this opportunity.

And they kept…

they kept saying, "We're gonna win this."

I could tell that they meant it.

And I was like, "Wow, who knows?"

Come Sunday,
you know, everything's a bit tense.

Everything's, um, heightened.

Your mind is telling you,
like, "We're fine."

But there's always this feeling
that anything can happen.

Look at that.

You know, talking about
"take care of your own point."

"Let's try and win by a record margin."
That's the stuff of dreams.

That wasn't very good, was it?
Let's hope I can do better than that.

Fuck's sake.

We're in a very, very strong position,

but we can't let up.

We have to go out there
and try and win the session.

We poked the bear, now.
We expect them to come out swinging.

There have been
final day comebacks in Ryder Cup history,

but if the US is to win
this Ryder Cup at Bethpage,

it will be by far
the most monumental in history.

We've had a late twist
with Victor Hovland withdrawing

from today's matches with a neck injury,

which means Harris English sits out,

and half a point has gone to either side.

So there's a rule in Ryder Cup
that if a player withdraws,

each team is awarded half a point
as if that match was halved,

and the day begins.

So all of a sudden, it's 12 to 5
for the Europeans entering Sunday.

Two points away,

and Keegan Bradley wondering
how it's all gonna go today.

Yeah, that feeling's pretty… pretty awful
because there's nothing you can do.

I didn't know this practice happened.

You know, 99.9% of the captains
have never had to deal with this.

The Americans aren't happy,
but rules are rules.

And now the Europeans just need
two points out of 11 matches

to retain the Ryder Cup.

And the Americans are
without one of their top-ranked players

in Harris English.

Harris English, he handled this
with the most class.

I don't even know the word for it.

He keeps bringing up how he doesn't
want to make this about himself

and he wants to do
what's right for the team.

And I know
how much this means to the players,

and I know how hard they're trying,

and I know that they want nothing more

With the course, the way it was set up,

And we saw that in the singles.

And so a lot of the matches went to 18.

When he missed, it's shocking, honestly.

It's hard to believe that I have
this opportunity in front of me.

So Young will have his chance

to take out one of Europe's
all-time greats to win the match.

You have two different things
in your mind at the time.

what's my process look like

And on the other hand,
I'm sitting there, like,

"I have a putt to beat Justin Rose on 18
in a Ryder Cup in New York."

And Cameron Young has come full circle.

It has given the entire US side some hope.

we're just running downhill.

like, the family area

and just shared, like, uh,

just how really incredible it was

to watch his team play the way they did

And it was just so cool to be accepted
into, like, this circle of guys

and be treated as one of their own.

It's been certainly
a highlight of my career.

It's such an incredible week.

I mean, main takeaway is just how much
I would love to skip two years ahead

and go try to beat that same team again.

I will be forever grateful for this group.

It's such a weird thing to have such a…

such a soft spot in your heart

for something
that has such a horrible ending.

But then I think about all the moments
that I had with the guys

hanging out together.

You know, all the times that we had
leading up and the dinners that we had.

I would just love to win one Ryder Cup
before I'm done.

Like, literally, Keegan
could not have been a better captain.

He did everything with so much passion.

All the guys told me they couldn't believe
how great of an experience they had.

It sucks that we weren't able
to win for him.

Hopefully, people can remember this
Ryder Cup for the fight we had on Sunday.

Keegan's been a great guy.

He's been there for us.
He's been very vocal.

Did such a great job inspiring us,

and he's been the leader.

So I know it was a hard situation for him,

but I think
he embraced it incredibly well.

And I couldn't have asked
for any more than that.

And, you know,
I'd love to play for him again.

This win, I think, means…

The gravity of the achievement
was not lost on us.

It was almost a little bit surreal
that we'd done it.

Celebrating as a team,
there's nothing like it.

For me personally, it was like,
I want this day to last as long as it can.

Europe's victory
over the Americans is historic.

They pulled of their first win
on foreign soil since Medina.

And it's also
only the second time in history

that a captain has won back-to-back.

It's kind of a pinch-me moment

when someone says you're
the greatest Ryder Cup captain ever.

You know, I found my calling in a way.

I get a lot of the plaudits as captain,

but I'm very fortunate to be a small cog
in a very much larger plan of people

who care about
what the Ryder Cup represents.

It's been a blessing, really,
and, um, my job

is to keep imprinting those lessons
and the history on those players,

making them feel
they're playing for more than themselves.
