THE VIRGINIAN: It was
a quiet time at Shiloh.

One of those rare times
when there were no fences
to mend,

no waterholes to clean out.

We were between jobs,

and most of the men
were taking it easy.

But not for long.

We had a contract
to round up some horses

had spotted the herd.

We'd had a glimpse of them
from time to time
up in the hills,

but none of us was really
prepared for the sight

of all those mustangs

pretty as you please.

They were pretty,

They were also stubborn,
mean and ornery.

By the time we got
those horses gentled

and delivered to the railhead
in Rawlins for shipment,

none of us was in one piece.

I wish I had a dollar
for every sprained muscle

and cracked rib.

I didn't need Trampas
to point out the sorry shape
we were in.

But, being Trampas,
he pointed it out anyhow.

As a matter of fact,
he went on about it
at some length.

When he was all run down,
I told him he and the boys

could lay over for a while
before they started back.

I'd go on ahead and catch up
with them at Shiloh.

Trampas figured
he'd hit me on an off day

and took off happy as a clam,
so he could tell the others

before I could
change my mind.

The next day, I started back
for Medicine Bow alone.

As it turned out,

I guess maybe
I should've put pleasure
ahead of business for once

and stayed over
with the others.

[ men whistling, shouting ]
