last time on episode three of the
wilderness living challenge
season four i want to make sure my aim
is dead on i don't want to hurt or wound anything
all right first grouse of the slingshot chanterelles that that is going to be oh
that's gonna be one delicious this
beaver really is good enough that
i feel like you could serve this in like
a fancy restaurant easily and it would
people be loving it until you told them what it was
and now day three of seven day
wilderness living challenge good morning
ah another beautiful morning in canada
nope the camera's all fogged up try that again
oh that felt good sprinkling a little bit so i went back
to bed now the day is really rocking out
there i can see it's brighter than
yesterday it's looking good
i feel like i finally caught up on my
sleep getting ready to come up here i
slept i had like four hours of sleep
preparing trying to get out the door to
come to canada and then four hours of sleep after i
when i drove up here and then four was
asleep the first time we got here and we
couldn't stop talking about
the bear hunt and what was going to go on and oh
i think coffee's calling i brought some
instant coffee got my one cheat there
my instant coffee let's see how that goes
[Music]
every day brings new life to help us on our way
[Music]
always taking my breath whether sun or
the rain will carry us over that horizon we see is this is
[Music]
moments like this oh look at that bright sun
nice it's gonna be a good day bright sun
there he is getting his applesauce on applesauce on
getting your applesauce on how many
apples are going to eat today well
i i figure like the a plateful is a good amount so
whatever fits on that did you finish
your applesauce yesterday i did
yeah so nice that's that's about what
you ate yesterday that's about what i ate yeah so that's two 12
13 15 something like that so not to not
nice looking apples yeah for wild apples yeah this is a tree from
uh farm field where i hunt nice
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
big shot this is
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
there we go fire in no time it's all about the prep work
higher up the dryer up you go to the trees like the uh
hemlocks or pines you get some branches
from up in underneath where they're
protected you bring those down with the smaller fine tips
get a little pile of those going like
you saw at the end and then a lot of
small stuff especially in this wet area
like there's a lot of small stuff
faster you get it going the faster you can get your coffee on
all right so it's day three of eating
the stuff that we brought with us and the
um grouse that we got and we're gonna do
a weigh-in before we head up the river
for six more days out there
so let's see what i why i weigh in at i weighed 205.6 i think it was okay 203
losing weight we've been eating a lot
too you're down 10 pounds
according to the scale so if we were
just saying 205 it's like i'm down two pounds
yeah down two pounds i'm losing the
challenge so far i gotta eat more
you gotta you gotta eat more pack it in
there you gotta eat apples i
for those of you that care you might be
wondering how we do this with all the
cameras and all the batteries chris he brings lots of batteries
i on the other hand have less batteries
but i have a solar charger
and a power pack unit right here which
has four outlets four usbs a um some sort of a usbc
and a cigarette lighter thing where you
can hook an adapter to it and then put a
jumper pack on your car to charge it i think
it had jumper cables that came with i
didn't bring those out into the wild
and the solar panel has two usb ports
that you can of course i washed my hands this morning with soap i didn't but i gotta get it done
so dismantle this make it in nice chunks
so that we can actually eat it and all the bones go back in
everything goes back in we don't waste anything here
it all gets stewed and rendered down and we make
this beaver go as far as we possibly can oh so so
[Music]
[Music]
nice i haven't done instant coffee in like over two and a half years so
but it's got the caffeine that i need so
i don't end up grumpy i'm biting chris's
head off so that's the most important thing it'll suffice
all right how'd we do oh we did pretty good looks
great put the beaver ribs in there
yeah little beaver ribs spare ribs yep big old hunks of fat
can i have myself some of that
that is excellent that's so good
i'm gonna dish myself something up get my feet on
you're gonna tip it for bra i try to
[Music]
what are you saying to you save me some save the neck for me bob
[Music]
beautiful oh look at that nice rich fatty broth
all right guys i reminded you before if
you don't understand why you're in the middle of the forest
with zach fowler eating beaver
go back to start and figure out how we
got here we got some bear coming up on the way
we're almost through one beaver so far
uh are you tired of eating beaver yet no no no not at all
[Music]
lord thank you for this beaver and this fat bear fat
food this adventure out in the wild jesus name amen
[Music]
oh and that broth is so rich
that tastes so good i just i feel so good
i woke up this morning and i just felt
so rested sleeping in my hammock
eating like this i feel like this is i'm getting a recharge
[Music]
was that a piece of the bear nobody
should eat alone even in the woods all right
are you trying to get a sponsor from this yeah no not really
i think you're right though about the
fighting weight you know it's like
yeah it's like uh yeah you're gonna drop
a certain ammo and then you're gonna be like okay i'm good
yeah we'll be here long enough for me to
stabilize out i don't think so i think i'll probably be on a
um a landslide for a while
you know well jeremy uh won wildcrafter he
comes out with me a lot and we did a
challenge and he continued the challenge for a month
so basically all the leftover food we had the beaver meat
he kept eating it for another month and then he found
he at the end of it he had he had plateaued
and he stopped losing weight he was
eating the same things we were eating
except he was cooking them on a stove and
you know carrying on with his regular
life his work in this job and all that
so i would probably do the same thing yeah
so if you can bring this stuff back to
maine you could continue the challenge right
i don't think they're gonna let you
bring beaver across the border all right we're changing lodgings
boys time to pack up the hammock we're gonna head out
drive around a little bit see if we get
some more grouse and start heading up
the river to our final destination for the next six days
[Music]
yeehaw
[Music]
boom nailed it all right so we just jumped to grouse
driving down the road we're gonna head
out into the woods and see if we can't get it
see if we can find a way to get in here this woods is thick
[Music]
right there beautiful shot
yeah that's a better shot didn't wreck it this time some good eating
here we are down at the river time to load out
tear down head upstream let's do it
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
all right i paired down my huge pile to one bag
two bags three bags that's the camera bag
trap basket with my tools and different
things drone in two little packs inside of there for
my pot and stuff like that this has got
clothes and my charging gear
and my hammocks and things and then my shotgun over there all right you ready
[Music]
whew
[Music]
[Music]
yeah nice yeah nice that's my first stuck on the wing yeah
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
there we go there you go one duck
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
we found a campsite we had come past this earlier
and decided to turn around come back to
it because there just wasn't much doing on the lake
and we keep seeing those ducks on our
way up the river so we thought we'd come back
and post up here we can head up to the
lake do some fishing come back down
do some duck hunting at dusk and done
there we go let's see what we got going on here nice nice fire pit second fire pit
there we go we don't oh it's even got
some nice lobster mushrooms here some really big looking lobster mushrooms looking good already
there we go we can have separate fires
if we don't want to spend time together
we get a little sick of each other's company
some work he said he could put his tent
and there's plenty of trees
for me to put my hammock let's get the let's get down packing
look at this there's even a camp table
i have to repair that home sweet home
yeah i feel good about this spot yeah me
too it's a nice little setup
let's get that canoe out of here and unload
[Music]
you're going for a cover photo somewhat yeah
[Music]
what are you doing over there dealing with secrets
just watching you do your thing this is how i do my cover photos
a little behind the scenes there if you wonder how he does it
now you know i just stand there
he's a minimalist like amazing what he
does with just two cameras
i have i don't even know how many cameras i have on me
it's embarrassing now that i see him do everything with two
looks like a little clearing through
here it might be nice for my little homestead for the
next six days all goes well
like a super duper trail right here
maybe not in the best place to right through here
and up into the woods set up right in the middle of a
moose pathway with my camouflage cover
maybe right next to it that could be entertaining huh
[Music]
this will do it's a nice little spot right here
tree right there some trees to tie my ties on to
off to firewood take back to our camp
chris is a little ways over there
like to be far enough away from my friends to uh
not have to hear them past wind in the morning
[Music]
[Music]
all right all done i can stand
it up here both the wings are pulled out
on the hammock one where you put your gear in
the other side so you can breathe my underquilt is on
and my other kit and gear and bag are down here
i'm all set so if it's raining heavily i can take the uh
take the wing in and bundle this up and
out of the way and i have
all of this all of this space around me to be able to
utilize and hang out free of being rained on directly
yeah now i gotta get over there it's
time to do some firewood and help out with the
evening chores and get the food going
[Music]
so we just added a first camp creation here
down log that i cut off right over here
and i cut all of the sticks you see them coming down like this
all of them so they approximately be flat with the ground and it makes a bench
and then you just bring it over to where you want it
stomp on it till it settles
and you got yourself a comfy two-person
sitting spot so we could sit somewhere nice by the fire and pluck the birds
[Music]
more cheers lots of bear fat
everything a growing boy needs
[Music]
[Music]
mmm big old chunk of fat a little bit of
a little bit of bear meat on it
[Music]
boiled clean my plate a couple needles to
[Music]
give a wipe bacon at the belly right yeah yeah the fat oh
yeah there we go there's the uh beaver bacon right there
the i'll try to show it to you beaver
bacon nothing really to see
it's just the belly the beaver belly
there we go here's a nice one i've had about 50 percent fat
there's the bear fat and fever meat
with every meal so far and according to
our weigh-in this morning i lost
pretty close to three pounds
[Music]
what do you think the distance is
well we can go by a number of hours what
do we do three hours or something
yeah at least three hours of paddling
[Music]
i'd be curious to know how many calories
we're eating in a day with all this fat
hmm it's going to be a lot
what do you think ah fat like that
it's gonna be a huge amount of calories
well look how much fat's in there i'm
avoiding eating that a little bit
you've just been drinking the broth
instead well i've been eating mostly the meat like try to go 50 50 at least
so i've had no adverse effects so far out of eating just
like 50 fat and like literally
giant plates full of this wiggly fat but
it i may have this afternoon felt a little like uh
like blood and stomach a little
crazy but it might have also been the
motion sickness from the boat which i don't
get as far as i know so maybe a combination of both
sorry i'm a little high on my fat you're a little fat high yeah
did you just get like a rush yeah like yeah
yeah you shouldn't do that too often you
should because it's good for you
at the same time just let it settle in there
next time on wilderness living challenge
season four can we keep the meat from
spoiling can we keep our friendship from spoiling
and can we keep finding good ways to
cook the food so we don't get too bored and go out of our minds
tune in next time to find out every
monday wednesday and friday night at 9pm eastern standard time
