birds from earlier the bear from
yesterday the chanterelles for while
we're out in the bear hunt
[Applause]
[Music]
the goal of the challenge is to gain or
maintain our body weight while eating
nothing but wild foods
so last october i headed up to the
backwoods of canada
to meet up with the wooded beardsmen and
do just that for seven days
[Music]
last time on episode one of the
wilderness living challenge season four
this morning we're uh just gonna drive
around and see if we can't strike one or
whatever uh
the dogs pick up the scent from the bear
and
oh
[Music]
i promise doc some wild yeah and some
more
we're gonna go take the meat and go live
wild with it
and now into the wild day one of seven
day wilderness living challenge
all right so we got it all packed up
minus the canoe we're gonna be putting
on
what do we think we got 100 pounds of
meat probably 100 pounds of meat two
beavers
almost a whole bear minus just a neck
roast and
the uh one rack of ribs which i take yup
just a half of the rib
and we got a big all the fat which we've
taken so we're gonna bring that and
render it use that to cook stuff in the
whole time
taking that with us all of our gear you
think we pack too much
look at that it's chocked full all the
way to the front
so uh we might have packed too much
we'll
pair it down when we get there to put it
in the canoe that's not all gonna fit
it's not gonna fit but uh
let's get the canoe on there and get
[Music]
[Music]
going
[Music]
here we go head north
[Music]
[Music]
nice look at that i thought i missed the
first one but there's actually two
[Music]
there you go that's two we're gonna go
look for the rest of them in the bush
yeah they're somewhere up in there
see if we can find them all right not a
bad start we just barely pulled down the
road
there's some grouse we see him going to
the bushes we're going to the bushes
after him
boom four grouse so one more he gets his
limit and then i'll pop him some with
the slingshot if we get more before we
uh
make it to where we're going for camp
tonight you gotta go into the pot with
uh
bear yeah yeah we gotta we gotta eat
these today they're fresh
yeah fresh meat man okay we're eating
four grouse today
pork roast today and breakfast and
they'll be gone after that oh yeah we'll
probably get eaten great
for sure these are tiny tiny nice
good score let's get the rest away there
so we can set up camp and have that fire
and eat them
[Music]
all right we're here i found a spot i'm
not even gonna really be roughing it for
tonight
we've got a picnic table and stuff we
went further down to where we're gonna
launch in the morning
with the canoe but there's a lot of rvs
and four-wheelers so at least it'll be
quiet right here it seems
and we even got a little bit of a lake
down here maybe we can catch us
and we can catch ourselves a trout for
breakfast to go with the grouse
and stuff let's see what we got
[Music]
taste the water and tell me how many
fish are in there a little dirty
yeah clear water though clear
clear water super clear water
[Music]
all right so wilderness living challenge
as part of this we're just using we're
using whatever we got store-bought stuff
is okay
we're not going primitive it's all about
food and keeping your weight up
more of a bug out situation than
anything else bug out with supplies
kind of thing so i got my outdoor vitals
my zero
degree summit bag from outdoor vitals
and my warbonnet cover
and my warbonnet hammock i'm gonna be
cozy
[Music]
do
[Music]
all right there we go she's all set
prizes for speed
chris has definitely got me beat setting
up a tent but i think
i will be more comfortable we'll see
we're going to do a weigh-in
at the beginning at the end i'm going to
remove my
[Music]
all right guys you know the goal of the
wilderness living challenge is to
go as long as you possibly can we're
going seven days this time and we're
trying not to lose any weight at all so
i'm gonna weigh in real quick
um and then we're gonna weigh in at the
end over six five
six seven days we'll see what we go and
if we lose any weight at all we
lose the challenge okay so i got shoes
off got my
pockets wasn't empty i got my uh knife
on
um so i'm gonna keep that the same as
when i check out
let's see what i got 140.4
so that's my official weigh-in weight if
i lose any weight whatsoever during the
challenge
i officially lose so zach's gonna jump
on right here
205.6 it's consistent all right there
you go
weighing in at 205.6
let's do it let's get it let's get it on
let's get our grouse on
yeah we gotta eat yeah okay
going backwards
[Music]
there we go cleaned up look what mess
that shotgun makes of it
it'll be good though
all right so i let him have first blood
the birds are coming out pretty good
but i still think a head shot with a
slingshot would have been a lot cleaner
i gotta get some firewood
[Music]
[Music]
all right so already you can see a
little bit of competition strategy going
on here chris has got it figured out
the point is to lose the least amount of
weight to win
and he's got me doing all the sawing and
all the work and he's like i'll pluck
the grouse
who's burning more calories i'll let you
decide
get as much of the dirt off as we can
and toss them right in yeah
a lot of post-it dirt
you think about the apples should the
apples go in yeah we save them
throw a couple apples in yeah it'll that
the juices the
juicing the sugar from the apples will
make it uh
like gourmet yeah
okay i'm gonna grab a couple more i
think we're gonna go that route
there we go we've added the chanterelles
we got some bear fat
the what's that a roast yeah
from the bear fairloin i think fair loin
we got the
birds from earlier the bear from
yesterday the chanterelles for while
we're out in the bear hunt
and the cheat sugar salt cheating
seasoning salt
all right look at that beautiful all
kinds all
four birds in there and the bear fat and
the beer meat
that's gonna be awesome
the big reveal how'd we do oh
beautiful pretty good it looks like we
were just about to be low on water
some caramelizing
going on around the
some caramelizing of the apple along the
edges
i probably could have had some more
liquid in there
look at that bird though that one that
meat
perfect oh yeah
you got the best bird i got that one too
and the second yeah
you left me that what is this fat
i don't know i think that is a chunk of
fat i'm going to eat it you can eat it
i'm going to eat just a big old chunk of
fat well because you're in ketosis you
can do it if i did it it might go
blow through me right some mushrooms
you had to cut up that uh bear hunk
there that's like i think that's pretty
good
have you had bear meat before yeah well
i don't remember
no it was too long ago all right take
away that
all right first bite of bear meat
hard-earned bear meat let's see
is there any cooked all the way through
oh it's gotta be good and good and safe
yeah gotta be cooked by now
oh good that is good
that's good what does it taste like is
it like beef
i find it like a like a loose beef like
a not a tough beef like a loose beef
i feel like there's some other flavor
there almost like a
yeah you get like a lamb chop or
something you know it's like like a
wildy wild
yeah that wildly tastes but it's not
gross in any way
it tastes really good
i think this is the way we cook it it
tastes like a
a roast like any beef roast that you did
yeah it's a roast like
yeah it tastes big flake yeah it's very
beef like
the fat is very juicy very good it
really works
works well here's a big old chunk of fat
right that needs to be rendered more but
you're ready to go
i'm going for a big old chunk of fat how
many calories in that chunk
right i don't know there's more calories
in fat right
absolutely and that's the thing and this
is you know when being a ketogenic i'm
trying to eat sixty percent fat
in my diet so mmm
so that we didn't do so good on the bird
it needs a lot slower cook you said that
too yeah it's gotta be slow
we were like trying to get cooked so we
can eat and go to bed and get up early
and
that's what's happening but
unfortunately we get this big old hunk
of fat
and put a little bit of fat like it's
like putting a wet pad of butter on your
dry dry chicken or something
a little piece of fat those chanterelles
are amazing are they good
oh yeah it's the perfect thing to soak
up the fat
hmm
that's good the bird with the little
slice of fat on that tasting apple
the apple is probably something we could
add in later because it seems
and the chanterelle could have gone in
later yeah it's like the apple i think
burnt
wishbone a wishbone yeah it's got to be
dry we're going to
put it by the fire to dry it out that is
the tiniest wishbone ever
hey guys look at that there you go the
tiniest wishbone ever
we make a wish we'll dry this out with a
fire and wish our trip turns out good in
the morning
a little bit of chanterelle
a little bit of bear meat with each bite
this
is delicious only biggest my biggest
fear
is that we got so much bear we got you
know like a hundred pounds of bear
and two giant beavers my biggest fear is
that
i get so sick of eating it you know
i don't think it will because i never
got sick of eating trout for 87 days in
patagonia but
i don't know we're gonna have to catch a
trout yeah
yeah oh yeah i hope we oh i hope we
catch a lot of everything out there
put some adobo spice on it um
well first meal really good the apples
it brings out that little sweetness
well we almost did it all a little bird
left
let's see how do you do i ate all my
steak except for three bites and two
chunks of fat
we were like extremely optimistic that
was a lot of food that we were gonna
have that for like two more meals
if that's true then then what do you
think
how long's 100 pounds of food going to
last us well i don't know
how many pounds was that i was like wait
almost three birds
yeah birds plus handful meat like that
all right refilled the pot for breakfast
there's a big old beaver
rear end tail would come off there top
of the beaver going that way
and there's still one of the spruce
grouse in there with it and put that on
the fire
[Music]
all right so i got it in there the dutch
oven
and five inches four or five inches of
hot coals i'm gonna proceed to bury it
and leave a couple openings for air
so that uh they burn down and this
hopefully
settles down fairly evenly and continues
to cook for a
good long simmer we've got an airspace
here
and airspace here and an airspace here
so the coals coals will burn down dutch
often will settle
beaver cook wake up warm it up again
beautiful tender juicy beaver for
breakfast
