[narrator] Welcome to the jungles
of Borneo and Sumatra.

When explorers first came here,

they found a lot of surprises
in the forest.

Crawly surprises.

Leafy surprises.

Colorful, pointy-nosed surp...
Wow! That is surprising.

There were
new and astonishing things everywhere.

But high above them, like, really high,

was the most surprising
and mysterious thing of all.

Creatures they could only hear
and occasionally glimpse.

[primate bellowing]

They asked the locals,

who said the treetops were home
to "forest people."

Orang Hutan in their language.

Secretive loners who hid themselves away
to avoid being put to work.

They were right that
close relatives of ours live up here,

but wrong about everything else.

These treetops are full of big characters
who love to "hang out" and socialize.

Mind your manners, buddy.

[♪ whimsical music playing,
Louis Prima "I Wan'na Be Like You"]

[man vocalizing]

♪ Now I'm the king of the swingers ♪

♪ Oh, the jungle VIP ♪

♪ I've reached the top and had to stop ♪

♪ And that's what's botherin' me ♪

This is the story
of a young female called Indah,

who sets out to explore
this busy forest for herself.

-♪ Oh, oobee doo I wanna be like you ♪
-[chorus vocalizing]

♪ I wanna walk like you, talk like you ♪

♪ Ooh, you'll see it's true ♪

-[chorus vocalizing]
-♪ An ape like me ♪

♪ Can learn to be human too ♪

[♪ trumpet instrumental playing]

Indah is nine,

a teenager in orangutan years.

And unlike the legends,
she's a very hard worker.

She and her mom, Diann,
and her little brother, Bimo,

are searching hard
for anything they can eat.

They like fruit the best,

but when there's no fruit around,

spiky rattan plants will just have to do.

Two-year-old Bimo will give it a shot.

The spiky stuff
isn't as nice as mom's milk,

but he needs to learn what's safe to eat.

Indah hasn't had milk for quite a while,

but she stayed close to mom
for nearly ten years

to learn the ways of the forest...

and, you know, for the comfort
and security of family life.

That's just normal for orangutans,
who have the longest childhoods in nature.

But Indah's learned almost all she can.

Oh!

She's fine, she's fine.

She'll make mistakes along the way...

but it's better to slip up
while mom's around.

Their family unit is still strong,

but for Indah,
everything started to change

as soon as her little brother was born.

For Indah,
nothing was the same after Bimo.

Sure, he was adorable beyond words,

but, suddenly,
Bimo seemed to get all the attention...

and all Indah could do was watch.

Orangutans are pretty helpless
when they're born.

And that meant
mom had to carry little Bimo everywhere...

while he just clung to her fur
and tried not to fall.

[sighs] Why is he so frustratingly cute?

But taking care of a newborn around here
is so difficult that,

from now on,
Diann would give Bimo most of her time.

Being number two was something that
Indah was gonna have to get used to.

Like all older siblings,

Indah has grown to love Bimo.

Now that he's old enough
to let go of mom for a while

and start to play, he's a lot more fun.

[♪ mellow folk music playing,

♪ Times and places ♪

♪ Are all in who you share 'em with ♪

♪ And it's life, and the point is ♪

♪ Enjoyin' who you share it with ♪

♪ Joy is who you share it with ♪

♪ And in time, what you find is ♪

♪ The time is who you spend it with ♪

Diann pulls Bimo back
if he strays into trouble,

and prepares him
for his journey through life,

which, as a male,
will be very different from Indah's.

♪ Joy is who you share it with ♪

Fun times...

but not everyone in the neighborhood
wants to play nice.

As the highest-ranking female around here,

Ruby and her son, Rafi,
are the true jungle VIPs,

entitled to the first pick
of everything...

while Diann and her family
just get scraps.

Only a few trees have fruit remaining,

so Ruby can hog them all.

She and her son are like royalty.

Even little Rafi has the right to fruit
before Diann.

It's always been this way.

It's enough to make a hard forest
even harder for Indah.

Once this fruit is gone,

it's anyone's guess
when more will arrive...

and when she and her family
will finally get a decent meal.

[chittering]

Knowing what you're allowed to eat
is a learning process.

And so is figuring out how to reach it.

Unlike most tropical forests,
this one doesn't have a continuous canopy.

The trees are spaced far apart
without branches or vines connecting them.

And that makes travelling between them
a bit of an obstacle course.

You could climb down
and walk across the forest floor...

but, yeah,
I don't think that's such a good idea.

Fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers
are left in the wild...

but it only takes one to eat you.

Maybe it wasn't
the fear of being put to work

that kept the orangutans in the treetops.

Travelling over land
works fine for some...

but the best way to get between trees here
is to fly...

or some version of it,

like these Thomas's leaf monkeys.

Gibbons swing themselves across gaps
with their long, strong arms.

Oh, very impressive.

And then things get super weird.

What's this guy gonna do?

Whoa.

These are the only forests in the world
where the snakes can glide.

And I, for one,

don't wanna be standing
underneath that thing when it lands.

Fortunately,
these guys are much more interested

in hunting Draco lizards than narrators.

But guess what?

They can glide, too...

and can travel even further.

Just gotta stick the landing.

Ah! And it's an 8.7.

So, a lot of cool moves out there...

but for orangutans, it's a little tougher.

Not only are they big and heavy...

but the highest branches are...

unreliable.

Whatever your size...

you need to be honest about your weight.

Orangutans fall a lot harder than bees...

so treetop travel needs to be done right.

And it isn't quick to learn.

There's the pole vault.

The controlled swing.

Whatever that was.

And the bridge.

A favorite with moms
for transporting infants.

Those who master
the art of treetop travel...

can take more direct routes...

saving time and energy.

Although Bimo could be
a bit more cooperative.

[♪ upbeat music playing,

So where's Indah's dad in all this?

♪ Now, I'm the king of the swingers ♪

♪ Oh, the jungle VIP ♪

♪ I've reached the top and had to stop ♪

♪ And that's what botherin' me ♪

Bintang.

The 200-pound dominant male in this area.

He has a different way to save energy.

[roaring]

His long calls travel miles
through the forest, so he doesn't have to.

They warn off rival males
and attract adoring females.

[roaring continues]

Keep it up, buddy.

She's definitely into it.

[grumbling]

His dish-shaped face
may help direct these calls,

but, more importantly,

it tells other males that
he's the king of this area.

And if that didn't make it clear enough,

he can also spread his macho message

by effortlessly pushing over trees.

Eh, almost effortlessly.

-[branch thuds]
-Boom!

Letting the rest of the forest know
he's no pushover.

Bintang's collateral damage
also helps the sun bear.

-[grunts]
-This guy? He could use a little help.

He can climb trees,
but prefers his food delivered.

His thick skin protects him
from the stings of angry bees

as he searches for their grubs
or even their honey.

He seems to have given Bintang an idea.

Problem is, these aren't bees.

-[buzzing]
-They're wasps.

And wasps don't make honey.

But, hey, they taste okay.

Little spicy, but worth a closer look.

Yup, definitely no honey.

And quite a bit of pain.

Some of it self-inflicted.

Bintang may be the boss...

but he wouldn't know a bad idea
if it hit him in the face.

Did you learn nothing
from your mother, Bintang?

With the fruit gone,

orangutans are spread far and wide
searching for other food.

And Indah faces a big decision.

She's ready to leave home.

But with food so scarce,
it's the worst possible time to go.

If she doesn't go now,

any food the family finds
will have to be shared.

And her mom is already sharing with Bimo.

If Indah does go,

she'll need to trust herself
to find food on her own.

In the end,
she makes the decision to leave.

She won't go far.

Just across the valley.

But it's an area
her mother has never taken her.

About half a mile away,
Indah's found a place of her own.

But living alone is a big step.

Life at her mother's side
is all she's ever known.

Diann has prepared her well,
but that was training...

and the danger now is very real.

Now that she's chosen her spot,
she needs to get to know her new home

and start putting all that training
into practice.

And for the first time in her life...

no one is here to help.

In this forest,

it's wise to be safely in bed
before nightfall.

Back with the family,
Diann begins work on tonight's nest.

She starts with the foundations...

bending and weaving branches
to form a base.

Her apprentice follows along.

Come on, Bimo.

Every kid
needs to learn to make their bed.

Next, add a little padding.

After the base, the safety rails.

The base, Bimo. We're working on the base.

[sighs] That's not even safe.

But as long as mom's still around,
it doesn't matter.

He can always climb in with her.

Better to do that
than wake up on the forest floor.

Of course,
mom's made one big enough for two.

Diann and Bimo aren't the only ones
getting tucked in for the night.

Nearby, Indah's building
the first nest of her solo life.

She started learning at Bimo's age.

But this is her first time
without supervision.

Uh-huh. That's the base done...

and the padding added.

Yup, safety rails on the sides.

Ruby's nest site is fit for a queen.

Rafi likes the high life,
but can't sleep there.

He's as reluctant to go to bed
as most kids.

Rafi!

♪ Tomorrow is a new day for everyone ♪

♪ A brand new moon, brand new sun ♪

A comfy nest up here is a bare necessity.

I don't know, though.

That does not look comfy
or even big enough.

Sleep tight, Bintang, sleep tight.

♪ Follow, follow the sun ♪

♪ And which way the wind blows ♪

♪ When this day is done ♪

[animals chittering]

As night falls...

new creatures stir.

And if those early explorers
found daytime animals surprising...

boy, they must've been amazed by
what came out at night.

Moon moths with long tails.

Whip scorpions that spray vinegar.

And giant-eyed tree geckos.

Nothing here is quite what you expect.

-[croaking]
-And this guy, a frog that can glide.

Flying frogs.

Did not see that coming.

Don't worry, Indah. They're not dangerous.

The slow loris.

A nocturnal relative of a monkey...

and the world's only venomous primate.

Their poison is a helpful defense.

as the loris is slow by name...

and slow by nature.

Although male lorises
can expect a quick reaction

if they approach females with young.

Well...

quick for a loris.

The most magical dawn chorus in nature

is led by the haunting calls of gibbons.

[gibbons chittering]

No wonder there were legends

that those in the treetops

could speak.

[chittering continues]

Sound travels further
through the heavy mist.

It's a chance for Bintang

to make himself heard.

[roaring]

But today,

someone new is listening in.

An outsider...

looking for a new kingdom.

[♪ tense music playing]

Although he is several miles away,

Bintang's long call reveals

his current location

and his travel plans for the day.

The newcomer... will sneak in quietly.

If he can surprise Bintang,

it may give him the upper hand.

Because fruit is scarce,

Diann focuses on insects.

The technique?

Annoy the ants

until they bite hold of your fur.

Transfer them to your mouth.

Then collect a lively snack.

Bimo pulls the other side
of the ant's nest clean off.

That'll really annoy them.

Bimo might regret that.

His young skin is thinner than mom's,

and ants bite.

Ouch!

The entrance to the nest is
where the guardian ants,

with the biggest jaws,

are gathering.

Maybe he'll try higher up.

If he can find some worker ants.

Their jaws are smaller.

There you go.

Much less painful.

Yep. He'll remember that next time.

Who knew hairy hands were so helpful?

If you can't get your hands on insects,

one food that can always be found

is edible palms.

Trouble is,

they only grow on the forest floor.

Indah remembers
collecting them with Diann.

But Diann knew only to search

where the jungle was more open.

And...

for good reason.

[♪ tense music playing]

[♪ music intensifies]

[growls]

And that's as close to a tiger

as Indah ever wants to get.

-[thunder rumbling]
-There's been little to eat for months,

but rain is just what the forest needs

to produce fruit

and bring an end to this barren period.

For Bimo and Diann,

the building clouds are good news.

An end to their hunger

is on its way.

But for now...

let's just try to stay dry.

Some cope with the storm
by making umbrellas.

And if the rain keeps falling,

you can always just go back to bed.

And if you can't make an umbrella,

well, then you just have to
grin and bear it.

-When it finally stops raining,

Bintang can hear something approaching.

[bellowing]

The outsider.

He's used the cover of the storm

to enter Bintang's area

and check out his territory.

Bintang must rise to the challenge.

Adult males are so powerful

that close combat can be fatal.

It's avoided if possible.

But if Bintang doesn't act now,

he could lose his kingdom.

[grunts]

[♪ suspenseful music playing]

Bintang pushes the outsider lower...

but the ground is the last place
either male wants to be.

After a fierce fight,

Bintang has driven the outsider off.

He'll think twice before returning.

The rain has refreshed
the forest's watering holes.

The safest ones are
high above the forest floor,

easy for the VIPs to hog till empty.

Bimo is thirsty...

but is made to wait...

while his mom risks
going down to the stream.

The water is cool and delicious,

but far too dangerous for Bimo to reach.

Rafi shares Ruby's water
from a high tree hole,

well away from tigers.

Queen Ruby struggles with sharing

even with her son.

Indah also wants a drink...

but is still in a dangerous area

where visibility is poor

and the undergrowth
could be hiding predators.

[♪ unsettling music playing]

The tiger doesn't sound nearby.

She's got time for a drink...

if that's the only tiger.

That ought to keep her going a bit longer.

Looks like she's starting to
get the hang of solo life.

The change of condition since the storm

has brought a new male into the area.

This...

is Harto.

He doesn't have the big cheeks
like some of the other males,

and he's a little...

itchy and...

Ugh! I can't imagine that breath is great.

But...

he is able to father young.

And he's come to the area
to look for a mate.

Diann is the right age for him.

He'd better make a good first impression.

And right now,

he's doing the orangutan equivalent

of stumbling across the dance floor.

And spilling his drink

all over her.

For Diann,

Harto could be an intimidating sight.

Some males can be quite aggressive.

Bimo's instinct is to protect his mom.

But...

Harto's not being rough.

He just wants to find out
if Diann is ready to conceive again.

He can tell she's not fertile,

and unlikely to be

while Bimo is so young.

Harto will just need to wait a few years

for an opportunity.

But he's okay with playing the long game

And it wasn't a definite "no" from Diann.

Pitcher plants combine the rainwater

with digestive juices,

which turn any insects that fall in

to bug soup.

A simple recipe

I won't be creating at home.

But Harto

could get on board with a protein shake.

He's decided to stick around for a while.

And if he wants to impress Diann,

a little bulk wouldn't hurt.

For Indah, the neighborhood newcomer

is a chance to pick up new tricks.

She hadn't thought
of getting water this way.

It's smart

and safer than visiting a stream.

She'll give it a shot...

if Harto leaves her any.

That's a whole lot
of orangutan to hydrate.

Time to see what Harto has left her.

Yeah.

These drinks look
a little past their sell-by date...

but she can still test the idea.

It works.

If you've got the brains
to learn from others,

the forest is one big classroom.

Even the sun bear has something to offer.

If there's honey around,

you can count on a bear

to find it.

His long claws are great for ripping open
the entrance to beehives.

Indah has followed him
to a bunch of trees with hives inside.

But with no claws,

how is she gonna get in?

She breaks off a twig,

and starts to shape it.

Incredibly,

she's crafted a tool
that can go deep inside the tree

and reach bee eggs and honey

that even a bear's claw couldn't get.

Indah found honey by following a bear.

But she learned how to collect it

from her own kind.

Orangutans in different areas

pass on different skills to one another...

like culture

in people.

As a result,

they can use nearly 30 types of tools.

Impressive.

Whether you're after honey

or ants...

there's a knack
for everything in this forest.

You just need someone to show you.

Indah has learned a lot from her mom,

but now needs new sources of inspiration.

And here comes Harto again,

still in the area.

And now that Indah seen
one of his clever work arounds,

she knows he's worth watching.

Diann is also on Harto's trail,

following him from a distance.

She's got a crush on him.

Incredibly,

Harto has caught a slow loris,

avoiding its venomous bite.

Orangutans may be slow,

but the loris was...

well, slower.

Indah is first to arrive,
and she wants to try some.

But Harto is...

not keen on sharing.

And now Diann has showed up too.

Cutting in front of your daughter
isn't very nice,

but loris are a rare delicacy.

And, as Diann's being wooed by Harto...

she'll expect a gift.

[gasps] This is Harto's chance
to win her over.

But Harto appears to be putting lunch

ahead of love.

Oh, he's not sharing with Diann at all.

Harto.

Harto, you're blowing it.

You don't bring chocolates on a date

then eat them yourself, bud!

This lady isn't hard to read.

She wants some loris.

Will you just give her some loris?

Let's hope Bimo isn't gonna learn
his pickup skills...

Come on, man. This is your last shot.

Ugh, dude.

Oh, this is just awkward.

Harto has forgotten
his manners completely.

Bimo, when the time comes for romance,

this is a lesson in how not to do it.

Whatever his future,

it's clear Diann

ain't gonna be a part of it.

But love isn't
the only challenge for Harto.

His clowning around
has alerted someone else.

And Bintang won't see the funny side.

The big guy heard the commotion
from the loris party,

and Harto had better not be around
when he gets there.

The noise was definitely
coming from this area.

If Harto is smart, he'll get out quick.

Harto's not done yet.

The dope shakes a branch

to intimidate Bintang.

Bintang seems relaxed.

Well, now that he's seen it's just Harto,

and not the outsider.

He's not too bothered.

Harto can posture all he likes.

Everyone knows
who the big man is around here.

Whatever, man.

Harto finally gets the message...

and leaves.

For Indah,

Harto's visit and the gathering
around the loris

have an unexpected upside.

They brought her family back together.

It's a great chance to catch up
with her favorite little brother.

Indah's been missing Bimo
so this is the perfect opportunity

for some quality time together.

It's as though they've never been apart

So, all those legends about orangutans
being loners, maybe they got it wrong.

Because reunions like this
look like the total opposite.

A love of fun, friendship and family
we can all relate to.

But it can't last forever.

And as Indah returns to life alone,

she feels the absence
of her family more than ever.

But could her need for companionship

be answered by someone
she's never met before?

Zaki has entered the area.

A young male
who's also just left his family.

Just like Indah, he's new to solo life
and could use a friend.

Indah knows the area better than Zaki.

As a female, she's near where she grew up.

Young males travel further
from their mothers when leaving home.

So Zaki has the most
to gain from a friendship.

Zaki, I said friendship.

Come on, buddy.

The recent food shortage seems to have
left everyone reluctant to share.

The pair have found some termites,
they're not exactly loris,

but Zaki still doesn't
want Indah to have any.

He thinks the insects ought to be his.

It would seem all male orangutans
have a bit of a sharing problem.

But Indah's no pushover.

She's pretty determined to get her share.

Come on, you two.

What would your parents say?

That is a good bit.

How about letting Indah
have just a little?

Hey, it's not too late
to do the right thing.

Attaboy.

It may be just the leftovers,
but, hey, it's a start.

With Indah's local knowledge
and Zaki's strength,

they do better teaming up.

Especially if they hope to tackle
the opportunity that's coming their way.

After the rain,

the cemenang
is the first tree to bear fruit.

But it's not exactly convenience food.

These pods are dispersed
by water, not animals.

So unlike most fruits,
they are designed to be hard to eat.

It's no problem for big guy Bintang.

He and trees have history.

And his powerful jaws are more
than a match for the tough outer casing.

However, the itchy hairs inside
are a different matter.

They're annoying
no matter how big you are.

Thankfully, the seeds
hidden within are nutritious,

if not exactly delicious.

As the cases ripen, a split forms,

teasing a small window into the fruit.

Diann has a method for these.

Once split, the fruit can be pried
slightly wider.

Then a stick can be used as a probe

to get beyond those annoying hairs
and reach the seeds inside.

Bimo is watching and learning,

but won't be able to do this
for at least five years.

Diann's a master with tools.

Unlike the highborn females,

she needs every survival trick
possible to make a living.

The technique is very smart,

and not something orangutans arriving
from other areas know how to do.

Yeah, looking at you, Zaki.

Ugh, no, buddy, you'll bust a tooth.

Only Bintang can break them that way.

But Indah knows mom's secret.

She shows her new friend the technique.

If you don't want a mouthful of prickles,
this is the way to do it.

Zaki studies her every move.

He seems impressed.

Really impressed.

Maybe he underestimated her.

Indah's skill with the cemenang fruit

is a turning point
for Zaki's behavior towards her.

A gentler, more respectful air
comes over him.

[♪ mellow music,

Over the coming months,

the two become inseparable.

When I see an apple tree
I pick one for you and one for me

They travel together,
watch each other's backs

and combine their brains
to solve problems.

Because that's what friends are all about.

The cemenang don't last long.

Soon everyone is once again short of food.

Even Queen Ruby and Rafi.

High status means nothing
when there's nothing to divide up.

The smaller the insects,
the longer it takes to collect them.

There is now less food than ever.

There are no easy meals for anyone.

Bintang resorts to bark.

Plenty of fiber,

but not much else.

Indah's discovering the sour sap
that bleeds from peeled trunks

can be edible,

but it's a bit gummy

and doesn't fill you up.

All play and social visits have stopped.

Everyone travels as little
as possible to conserve energy.

[squawking]

The hornbills are a sign to Diann.

Lots of birds heading in the same
direction can only mean one thing.

The unripe fruit in a fig tree that
she checked two weeks ago is finally ripe.

Birds are always the first
to discover fruit.

By following them, Diann can beat
her orangutan rivals to food.

Indah's next to arrive.

She learned about the birds
from her mother.

Their lowly status has forced
both to live by their wits

and survive the challenges
of this great forest.

All the animals will know
about this tree soon,

if they've been paying attention.

But Diann, Bimo and Indah
have the advantage of a head start,

and we'll make the most of it before
the royals come along and hog it all.

The fruit is perfect.

Uh-oh. Here comes Ruby and Rafi.

They usually take
everything for themselves.

Diann backs off,
expecting to be chased out.

But Indah waits a beat.

Ruby seems relaxed.

With enough food for everyone,
there's no reason to quarrel.

The tree is huge,
and it's stuffed with fruit.

There's plenty for all orangutans,
whatever their status.

Rafi eyes Bimo.

They aren't usually allowed
this close to each other.

But their parents don't seem

Eventually, it's time for Diann to leave.

She has to go look for more fruit
to pack on the pounds

before supplies run out
and Ruby's mood changes.

And it means Bimo must leave, too.

Rafi doesn't want the play to end.

Being a sociable ape in a forest
that rarely allows it, can be tough.

Ruby seemed to enjoy her son
having fun and making a friend.

Who knows?

Perhaps she'll allow Diann's
family closer more often.

As for Indah...

Sure, she still slips up once in a while.

But now she's got Zaki
to help catch her when she falls.

With more food around,
the two of them can travel more

and get to know their forests better.

They can also concentrate
on their relationship,

and the pair spend
every moment they can together.

There are even signs
this is becoming more than friendship.

Who knows, perhaps Zaki will one day
father Indah's young.

If they have his strength and her skills,
they should have a bright future.
