OLDER GIBBS: The rules gave my life order. But now,
without Shannon and Kelly,
there was no order.
My dad, well,
he knew more than I ever gave him credit for.
Go home! I want you out by the time I get back.
NEWSMAN: Pruitt was arrested on charges of bigamy.
-That's a federal crime. -WHEELER: You seeing this?
It's Doug Westmont.
FRANKS: It's Abe Pruitt's bloodsucking lawyer.
That fool's on television more than the president is.
MANNY: It's getting too dangerous.
Then I'm gonna get you out.
GIBBS: Think it's in everyone's best interest
to put Manuel Santiago into witness protection.
Thank you.
OLDER GIBBS: At first, it seemed like it was all gonna be okay.
Diane had her job up in Los Angeles.
-[keys jangle] -I was at Pendleton.
Those first couple of weekends,
we couldn't get enough of each other.
Oh, I missed those baby blues.
But after a few weeks,
the new wore off
and reality set in.
Diane.
I just got paged.
I-I got to go in.
I'm sorry.
It wasn't anybody's fault really.
-It was just... -[phone ringing]
...life being life.
Well,
that plus the fact
that long-distance marriage is for idiots.
-Yeah. -DIANE: Oh, my God, I'm so sorry.
I got stuck in a meeting.
GIBBS: Are you still in L.A.?
Yeah.
And I got handed a ton of documents
to proofread for Monday morning.
You didn't start on dinner yet, did you?
It's okay.
Do what you need to do.
I said long-distance was for idiots.
We'll figure it out.
Love you.
I love you, too.
OLDER GIBBS: L.A. wasn't even that far away.
But it felt like it was getting farther.
It felt like the distance was killing us.
-[indistinct chatter] -It started showing up
even when we were ten feet apart.
I knew if we were gonna pull out of this rut,
something had to give.
[knocking]
But, instead, things were
about to get a lot more complicated.
Dad. What are you doing here?
-Nice to see you, too, son. -[sighs]
I told you it wasn't a good time.
I got a lot going on.
Well, you got to do what you got to do.
I'm here to see her anyway.
Oh. About damn time I get to know my daughter-in-law.
-Evening, Mr. Gibbs. -You get that hand
-out of here. I'm a hugger. Come on. -[chuckles]
[chuckles] Hope you don't mind me camping out on the couch.
DIANE: Of course not. Right, Leroy?
We're so glad you're here.
โช โช
[sizzling]
Morning, son. Eggs,
bacon,
drizzle of honey--
-just how you like it. -[chuckles softly]
You know, that couch there's pretty comfortable.
I really hate you came all this way, Dad.
I'm heading into work,
and Diane's got to go back to L.A., so...
Well, you know, I've been asking you for weeks
when's a good time for me to come
and get to know your new bride.
-And you kept putting me off. -Yeah.
Because it wasn't a good time.
What the hell is that?
That's your rule box.
I fished it out of the trash
after you cleared out the old house.
Why?
I thought maybe you'd want to have it back
now that some time has passed.
Wow.
Smells like heaven.
-What is that? Honey? -Just a drizzle.
-Aw. -I was just telling Dad
we're both headed out, so...
Actually, I called in to work.
My boss is letting me take the day off.
Wouldn't want to miss a chance to hear
all the most embarrassing Little Leroy stories.
Diane, I can't stay.
I know.
You think we need you to have a good time?
We do not.
So I guess I'll see you for dinner.
Mm-hmm.
-JACKSON: We'll be here, bud. -Mm-hmm.
Oh. Hold up, son.
-[chuckles]: Yeah. -Bacon
in a cup.
That's where he got that.
He gets all his best ideas from me.
[chuckles]
[Gibbs chuckles softly]
Yo, MJ.
What are you doing hiding out in here for?
[chuckles softly] I'm not hiding out.
I sent Gail across the street to the pay phone
to test out the new extension system.
Earl I.T. making upgrades again?
He's trying to make it so you can dial in
and bypass the secretaries
instead of us having to transfer the calls.
-[door opens, closes] -GAIL: Mary Jo, I'm back.
-[chuckling] -Good luck.
[groans softly]
What are you doing back here? I told you
to call the rec room extension.
I did.
I don't think Earl I.T. is very smart.
Okay. Forget about the phones.
Admiral Cane is arriving here this afternoon.
He is?
The head of NIS is coming here?
I've told you this twice a day since Tuesday.
Why's the admiral coming?
He never shows up unless it's bad news.
I have no idea.
But Wheeler wants us to keep him updated
on absolutely everything.
[door opens]
Hey.
What's wrong with you now?
Yeah, what's going on?
-Do you need a hug? -No.
I just...
My dad showed up last night.
And he and Diane are spending the day together.
And the three of us are supposed to have dinner tonight.
-That sounds nice. -[sighs]
You don't know my dad.
Right now, he's probably asking Diane personal questions
and making her feel uncomfortable and complaining
about how my cabinets don't shut flush.
I noticed that about your cabinets.
It's not about the ca-- Mm.
Never mind.
-Did I miss anything? -Well,
I just booked my first real slot at the Laugh Lodge.
-Dang, look at you. -Thank you.
On a not-so-delightful note, Admiral Cane's coming to town,
which can't be good.
What's he doing here?
WHEELER: The admiral's giving
a big speech at a town hall meeting.
You might've read in the papers the community's pretty salty
about SECNAV's fleet reduction.
They think it's gonna tank the local economy.
And SECNAV's sending Admiral Cane to take the punches.
I think the admiral can handle it.
I hear he's come up with a slideshow
about how the Navy's going to "continue to support"
the local community.
His little buddy ain't coming, is he?
If by "his little buddy" you mean
his deputy commander, Leonard Miller,
then, yes, he is.
Oh, and he wants our help.
What, security?
Yeah. The town hall meeting's gonna be packed.
Standing room only. And with people that upset,
things could get out of hand.
That's all well and fine, Cliff,
but that Miller's a disrespectful piece of crap.
Yeah, I know. Last time you worked with him,
-I never heard the end of it. -Yeah,
that Ivy League uppity jackass
talks down to me 'cause I got a Texas accent.
Damn it.
When'd you start shining your shoes?
Last time the admiral was here,
he commented on their lack of luster.
Damn it. I... [sighs]
Come on, Cliff.
We both know what's going on here.
Mary Jo told me Jason lost his internship.
Yes, Mike. My son was fired from the FBI mailroom,
so I ran upstairs to shine my shoes.
-[intercom beeps] -GAIL: Excuse me, sir.
Yes, Gail.
I just wanted to let you know
that Gibbs' dad showed up in town
and is spending the day with Diane.
The three of them are having dinner tonight.
Why are you telling me this?
Mary Jo told me that when the admiral's in town,
you want to know absolutely everything.
That's all I got for now,
-but I'll keep you posted. -[beeps]
Deputy Commander Miller wants you to meet him at Daly's.
He wants to review the security for the admiral's speech.
The hell's he doing at Daly's?
Eating, I guess.
Look, just sit up straight and use big words.
He'll think you're plenty smart.
[groans softly]
In order for us to properly assess security,
we're gonna need a detailed itinerary.
MILLER: The admiral and his wife Julia will be
touching down at 1500 today.
They will be transported from the hotel
to the town hall in the morning.
You know, I can't say I've ever seen somebody order
buffalo wings at a business lunch.
About that itinerary that we require...
Yeah.
[beeping]
What's that?
It's a PDA.
A personal digital assistant.
Personal digital assistant, Gibbs.
So it's like a tiny computer?
-Yes, Gibbs. Very tiny. -[alarm beeping]
I have the, uh, admiral's itinerary here,
but I'll fax it over.
I have to run.
I have a meeting.
-This should cover my salad. -Yes.
And don't worry about the tip-- I will calculate it.
Okay.
GIBBS: What was that about?
What?
Why you speaking in proper English?
FRANKS: 'Cause that dumbass thinks I'm a stupid hick.
Heard your daddy's in town.
Y'all getting dinner with the wife?
GIBBS: You know how he is.
I told him it was a bad time. He didn't care.
-Yeah? -He just shows up.
He thinks he knows everything about everything.
Ain't that what daddies are supposed to do?
[Miller yells in distance]
[panting, wheezing]
Ambulance, probie! Now!
-Smitty! -I'm calling!
[Miller groans]
FRANKS: It's a stab wound. He's bleeding out.
Miller's in surgery. They're saying the knife
didn't hit nothing vital.
[sighs] So he'll be all right?
Didn't say that.
He lost a lot of blood.
We won't know more till he's out.
I can't believe this.
The admiral's deputy commander gets stabbed
in front of two of my agents and the attacker gets away?
Hey, we didn't actually see him get stabbed.
Do you think the admiral cares about semantics?
-Wheeler. -Admiral Cane. Thought that you were gonna wait--
Where is he, Cliff?
Uh, he's still in surgery, sir.
How did he get attacked on base?
We're working on that, Mrs. Cane.
I have my best team on it. [clears throat]
We don't know much.
Miller was stabbed from behind.
It appears his tiny computer thing was stolen.
JULIA: His PDA?
-Why steal that? -I-I don't know.
Miller just used it to keep my schedule, which,
at this point, is pretty much public anyway.
The attacker ran off with it?
I seen a woman follow Miller out right before it happened.
We're talking to witnesses at Daly's,
trying to identify her now.
Ma'am, security directed me to park in the lower lot.
Great. Has anybody notified Leonard's wife?
-Not yet, ma'am. -Jake, we need to call her.
She can't hear this from anybody else.
Maggie, you do have Becky Miller's number, don't you?
Of course, Mrs. Cane.
Great.
Let's go find a phone.
[exhaling]
Miller said that PDA had
-the admiral's whole damn itinerary on it. -I'm aware.
His entire security plan is compromised.
We need to take point on this, Cliff.
Change their hotel, have our people on Cane
and his wife 24-7.
Do it.
I'll talk to the admiral.
Call me as soon as Miller wakes up.
[sighs]
Randolf.
[grunts] Hey, Kowalski.
-What's up? -Seems like
everyone's running around with their hair on fire.
-Something going on? -Yeah.
The deputy commander got attacked at Daly's.
Stabbed right outside the door.
-Didn't anyone tell you? -Back in my cage?
Not exactly top of everyone's mind when there's news to share.
Usually Herm ventures out,
gathers information, brings it back to me.
But he's doing PT with Gary Callahan again today.
Actually, I've been alone back here quite a bit lately.
FRANKS: Rando! Let's go!
-How long does it take to hit the head? -Sorry.
Go. Go.
LALA: Hustle up, Randy.
We're filling in Franks on the stuff from Daly's.
Smitty gave us a pretty good description
of that woman you saw.
And by "pretty good,"
he means a lot better than yours.
"Five-foot to five-foot-nine,
"blonde or brunette,
and a beige, gray, or brown shirt."
Wow, Mike.
Gibbs was distracting me with his daddy issues.
BOLO's out.
Smitty did say one interesting thing.
Our mystery woman had an accent of some kind,
-maybe Russian. -FRANKS: What are you thinking?
Russian spy steals tiny computer
with all the admiral's information on it?
Basically.
Smitty also thinks he may have seen this woman talking
to one of his regulars at the bar.
Guy was gone by the time we did interviews though.
All right. Rando, track him down, see if he knows anything.
We are putting Admiral Cane under round-the-clock protection
till we catch whoever stabbed Deputy Commander Miller.
You two got first watch.
-All night? -Yeah.
Gonna have to miss dinner plans with Daddy.
You're welcome.
Aw. You don't want to miss that.
Diane would be so disappointed.
-I'll take first shift. -No. No, no, no.
You got your comedy thing.
I'll let Diane know.
You got that slot at the Laugh Lodge?
Are they paying you?
$25.
[laughing]
[grunting]
It's gonna be an all-nighter.
I won't be able to make it to dinner.
My dad driving you crazy yet?
We're doing great.
He's decided he's gonna fix everything
that needs fixing in the apartment.
Di, can you hand me
that screwdriver, please?
"Di"? Really?
Oh, it's cute.
Hey, I looked through this box of rules he brought.
These are great.
I like this one-- rule number three,
never be unreachable.
We could probably both do a little better with that.
Yeah. Guess so.
Why'd you throw these away?
The rule box was Shannon's idea.
Oh. I'm sorry.
-I didn't mean to, um... -[knocking]
No, it's okay.
We got to go.
Miller's out of surgery and awake.
Uh, Diane, I got to jump.
Sorry again about leaving you with my dad.
It's fine.
-Really. -All right.
I'll call you when I can.
Does that happen a lot?
Which part?
You want to talk about it?
โช โช
Excuse me, Admiral.
You up for a chat?
Course he is.
He'll do whatever the hell it takes
to catch the fool who did this.
Right, Leonard?
Yes, sir.
You get better fast.
He's a lost puppy without you.
-[chuckles] -Thank you, ma'am.
Wheeler's just outside with my team, Dominguez and Gibbs.
They'll escort you to your hotel.
[sighs]
There he is,
Mr. Hot Wings.
Mm.
They got you running point on this?
Listen,
I don't know how much help I'm gonna be.
I didn't see who attacked me.
Just tell me what you know.
When I left Daly's,
somebody came up from behind
and, bam,
felt like I got the wind knocked out of me.
And then I saw the blood.
Saw a woman talking to you.
Right.
She had-- she had an accent.
She was...
[sniffs] She was Russian, I think.
She was just saying hi.
She asked me how I was doing.
It was weird.
Why, you thinking she's the one who stabbed me?
You think she had any reason to want the admiral's schedule?
The admiral's sch...
A-Are you saying she stole my PDA?
If she's the one who attacked you, yeah.
[breathing heavily]
-What? -My PDA didn't just have
the admiral's itinerary.
It-it had my personal working notes.
Fleet reduction projections, troop positions.
All classified.
The admiral didn't say nothing about that.
He didn't know.
I...
I shouldn't have had that stuff on there.
[breathing heavily]
If those notes fall into Russian hands...
Yeah.
Moscow'd find 'em real educational.
โช โช
FRANKS: Gibbs, once you get settled in,
give us a call, report back.
GIBBS: Copy that, boss. Out.
[engine turns off]
[grunts] I just can't believe
that Leonard had classified intel on his damn...
-whatever that thing is called. -PD--
-PDA. -PDA. And the important thing
-is that he's okay. -Yeah, no,
I'm glad he's alive, so I can tell him what a dumbass he is.
You heard-- you heard Agent Franks on the radio.
-He said that Leonard had troop position-- -Jake.
At ease.
All clear.
Uh, you can leave the bags, Maggie.
We're fine. Thank you.
I don't mind, Admiral.
I'll get you and Mrs. Cane unpacked.
So, the plan is to remain on lockdown
until it's time for your speech tomorrow morning.
An admiral of the United States Navy hiding like a scared child.
JULIA: Oh, honey, leave her alone.
She's just following instructions.
Now come sit. We need to go over your speech again.
27 years. She never gets tired of bossing me around.
No. I don't.
Come sit.
LALA: After that long,
-they still seem to get each other. -Mm.
I wonder what their secret is.
I'm gonna run a perimeter sweep before it gets dark.
[phone ringing]
Yeah.
Evidence.
Evidence? Uh...
I'm looking for Leroy Gibbs.
Uh, did I dial the wrong extension?
Well, we got a new phone extension system.
It's creating a few problems.
I really need to speak with my boy.
You're Gibbs' dad?
You got a fine son there, Mr. Gibbs.
Call me Jackson. Who's this?
Dick Kowalski.
I'm afraid Gibbs isn't reachable.
Is there a message I can give him?
You want the short version or the long version?
I got time.
AUTOMATED VOICE: For Agent Dalton Bjรถrnstjerna,
dial extension 2196.
-Okay, I'm dialing extension 2196... -2196.
-[line ringing] -...for Dalton Basement, just like
-that Max Headroom-sounding fool just said. -[sighs]
VERA: What up? Strickland here.
Sorry, Vera.
Testing the extensions system.
Sadly, the freaking system has failed us again.
What do you want me to do about it?
I want you to get Earl I.T. to get rid of it.
I want you to get mean.
-WHEELER: I really appreciate this, Doug. -[chuckles]
-It's not a problem. We'll get it cleared up. -Thank you.
Thank you.
Cliff! What's all that about?
Nothing.
That was Pruitt's lawyer, wasn't it?
Quit being so dramatic.
This has nothing to do with Abe Pruitt.
Oh. Really? 'Cause I thought I saw you
just walking down the stairs all buddy-buddy
with Abe Pruitt's lawyer Doug Westmont.
-Mike-- -Was that not the same Doug Westmont
who keeps going on TV talking about Pruitt's compound,
claiming he got nothing to do with the theater bombing?
He wasn't here because of that.
Jason didn't just...
get fired by the FBI-- he got arrested.
By the FBI?
No. He was shooting paintballs at moving cars.
Sounds dangerous.
It was, Mike.
That's why he got arrested.
Westmont is helping me get the charges dropped.
The guy's a good lawyer.
Anyone who'd rep Abe Pruitt's a bloodsucking sack.
Did you make him a Rob Roy?
Let the Westmont thing go.
Where are we with the protection detail?
Told Dominguez to try and convince him
to postpone his speech,
considering the heat.
She said he wasn't going for it.
The admiral's not really a postponing kind of guy.
LALA: The town hall organizers are supporting
the admiral's decision to go ahead with his speech.
Randy suggested a safety shield around the podium, but...
There's no way we're getting bulletproof glass by tomorrow.
We should be delaying.
Did you tell him that?
Yep.
The admiral's not really a postponing kind of guy.
[sighs deeply]
What?
You ever walk by someone who's on the phone
and you only really hear them say, like, one rogue line
but you can't stop wondering
what the hell they were talking about?
No.
Mm.
What's a rule box?
Nothing.
It's just...
stuff I used to write down.
Reminders.
Reminders of what?
I don't know.
You don't know what you wrote...
...but it was important enough to keep it in a box?
Never take anything for granted.
That was one of 'em.
You miss him?
Manny?
Yeah.
GIBBS: What's this?
Redwillow, California.
This is where WITSEC put him?
He shouldn't be contacting you.
It's just a postcard.
Well...
Why didn't you want to have dinner with your dad and Diane?
I don't know.
Are you happy?
[phone ringing]
Dominguez.
-Hey, it's me. -LALA: How'd your set go?
Oh... I got bumped for this guy named Carrot Top,
but I totally get it 'cause he had, like,
a trunk full of props and stuff.
Oh, he had the most luxurious red hair.
It was like mine, just with way more star power.
He was on The Tonight Show last month and everything.
What's he saying?
He got bumped, but we're happy about it.
Yes, we're really stoked. In fact, I was able to jump
into the case with a lot of creative energy,
which helped me track down our mystery Russian lady.
He tracked down the Russian lady.
-How? -I talked to the MPs at the gate,
and I asked if any of them remembered a woman
with a Russian accent, and one guy thought maybe,
so I used a hypnosis technique to help him remember
the last three digits of her license plate.
-Wait, what? -Her name is Anya Kozlov.
We already brought her in.
We're prepping to interrogate her.
And did I mention that there is a hypnotist
that performs at the Laugh Lodge?
I am really learning a lot over there.
I'm telling you. Oh, Franks is taking off his headphones.
I got to go.
Let's do this, Rando.
You have both made terrible mistake.
FRANKS: You know what I think is a terrible mistake?
Stabbing a guy and then stealing his tiny computer.
I did not stab him. I was just trying to talk to him.
-About what? -About me.
I just wanted to get to know him.
You were trying to cozy up to him
to steal government secrets.
-Secrets? -RANDY: Where's the PDA?
What's a PDA?
Tiny computer. What'd you do with it?
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Cut the crap, woman,
-we both know you're spying for the Russkies. -ANYA: What?
I am not a spy.
-I did not hurt that man. -Then what were you running for?
I was afraid I was going to get in trouble.
I knew that the police were coming.
My green card is expired,
so I was in that bar...
[sighs]
...was looking for husband.
[sighs, clears throat]
You were looking for a husband at Daly's?
-At lunchtime? -Yes.
If that's true, that's about the saddest thing I ever heard.
Well, it is true, and I have nothing to do with this.
But I can tell you what the attacker looked like.
That would help me with my green card, yes?
-What'd the guy look like? -ANYA: He was tall.
About six feet tall.
White man, early 30s.
Brown, wavy hair.
RANDY: All right, Miss Kozlov,
we need you to sit tight while we verify
you're not a Russian spy.
-[door opens] -How do you do that?
How do we do that?
I think she's telling the truth.
Who would make up a story about fishing for a husband
-at Daly's at lunchtime? -[groans]
-Damn humiliating. -Good point.
Admiral's speech is in a few hours.
We should get over there to prep.
Lunchtime, Rando. Humiliating.
I'm out front.
LALA [over radio]: Copy.
We're moving.
Ma'am, I asked them again about a teleprompter.
-They're working on it. -He'll be good with the cards.
We'll see you there.
Tell her you'll be good with the cards, hon.
I'm good with the cards, Mags.
-Gun! Get down! -[gunshot]
-[people screaming] -Get down! -Getting her inside!
-[gunshot] -Covering!
Down, down, down.
-Julia! -Stay down. Stay down.
Lala, you good?
Yeah. We're good.
Calling in backup.
Covering for potential secondary attack.
Admiral, you okay?
-Yes. -Gonna get you back inside on three.
One, two, three.
WHEELER: Sir, the hotel and surrounding area
-have been cleared. -I-I was nearly killed
by a sniper, and it seems like you have nothing.
We found the sniper's nest.
The shooter tried to police their brass,
but there was one casing they missed.
It's en route to forensics now.
We're gonna find out who did this, sir,
-you have my word. -Jake, you need to sit,
or you're gonna do the shooter's work for them
and give yourself a heart attack.
Picked a hell of a month to stop drinking, I know that.
Well, if you'd like a cocktail, sir, I make a mean Rob Roy.
Man just said he's got a drinking problem, Cliff.
This ain't the time for a relapse.
I don't have a drinking problem.
I'm just... being healthy.
Okay.
Sit.
Sir, I know that you are planning
to reschedule your speech
for later tonight, but there have been
two attacks in as many days.
We strongly recommend that you cancel your speech.
Asked and answered.
Whole community is on edge over these proposed fleet reductions.
Somebody has to speak for the Navy, and that person is me.
But Julia will need an escort
to Mira Costa Airfield.
What? No. I'm going with you.
I need you to go back to D.C., hon.
I spoke to Senator Hart, he said you can use his jet.
I want you to go home.
I need to know that you are safe.
-Please. -[sighs]
Okay.
-Thank you. -GAIL [over intercom]: Sir?
Just wanted to let you know Gibbs' dad is here.
Kowalski invited him for lunch.
They're in the kitchen now having sandwiches.
Not now, Gail.
Just keeping you updated
on absolutely everything,
like you requested.
I'm aware of what you're doing, Gail. Please stop.
[Franks clears throat]
Mmm.
-[laughs] -Dick,
this might be the best sandwich I've ever had.
I'm a man who eats a lot of sandwiches.
It's a real passion of mine.
I sensed that about you.
Bread's out of this world.
Can't believe you make it from scratch.
Consistency and patience,
that's the secret to my sourdough.
That's the secret to a lot of things.
Amen to that.
I've been keeping a close eye on your boy.
I think he's got the makings of a good team leader one day.
Think so?
I thought this whole, uh,
Navy cop business was
more of a passing phase for Leroy.
He was a little slow out of the gate,
but we're motoring now, man.
I got a front-row seat to his first successful interrogation.
-Heck of a show. -Wish I could've seen it.
Well, the tape's in my custody.
I don't see any harm in giving you a gander at it.
That'll give us a little more time together, too.
-JACKSON: I'd like that. -Dad?
The hell are you doing here?
Eating the best sandwich I've ever had in my life.
GIBBS: You can't just show up at my work.
I didn't. Dick invited me.
He called looking for you,
but thanks to the screwed-up extensions, he got me instead.
We got to chatting, one thing led to another, and here we are.
And here we are.
GIBBS: What's so important you're calling me at work?
Uh, it's your cabinets.
-Ugh, here we go. -JACKSON: They don't shut flush.
Oh, I hate that.
JACKSON: Diane was, uh, giving me a hand working on 'em,
and then she decided she
had to head back to L.A. early.
She didn't call you?
Seemed out of sorts, son.
She's probably sick of hearing you complain about the cabinets.
I got to get back to work.
Enjoy your lunch.
-He always been so hardheaded? -Well, gets it from me.
[printer whirring]
Oh, hey. I heard Gail say something about
your dad being here?
Did you tell him we got shot at or something?
What? No.
He's not here checking on me.
He's in the kitchen, having lunch with Kowalski.
LALA: Oh, that's nice. Oh, uh,
also, Randy was looking for you.
He said Woody called, and he's ready to talk to you
about that sniper stuff.
What's with him?
His dad's here having lunch,
and he finds it upsetting for some reason.
Admiral still ain't budging on his speech,
but he wants his wife to hop a jet out of town.
Need you and Vera to take her over to Mira Costa Airfield.
Ain't too shabby.
Kudos to Dalton Basement.
He spent, like, 15 minutes with the Russian woman,
and whipped this sucker up.
BOLO's out.
[groans softly]
Listen, I seen you been driving a new car.
The Impala.
That's the same car I've seen parked outside
-the Chacales hangout, right? -Yep.
After we arrested Manny Santiago,
the Feds put it up for auction, and I bought it.
Beach crime scene a while back,
you showed up late,
got dropped off by that same Impala.
Right around the time you were dating
some fella named "Johnny."
I ain't here to pry or pass judgment.
I just want to know that you're okay...
and that it's over.
I'm okay.
And it's over.
โช โช
[soft chatter]
Wow. Looks like a lot's happening
in a short time here, fellas.
-Impressive. -PHIL: Well, we're relentless, Randolf.
You better ask somebody.
I don't even know what that means.
Hey, Gibbs, I know you're about to go into laser focus
G.I. Joe snipery mode here, so
before that, I just want to say, your father is a gem.
-Mm-hmm. -What?
Yeah. Earl I.T.'s screwed-up extensions made their way
down to our building, too.
Phil and I ended up chatting with your dad for, like,
-a solid hour. -About what?
Uh, sandwiches mostly.
Yeah, he's a real sandwich connoisseur.
[laughs] Really? I had no idea. That's awesome.
What? You know I love sandwiches.
-Can we just talk about the sniper, please? -Yeah, copy that.
After you and Lala went all Batman and Robin,
whisking the admiral and his wife off to safety,
Franks and I processed the scene.
Yeah, more like Batgirl and Robin.
[chuckles] Totally.
Why is this marked as the third shot?
-Planter was hit first. -WOODY: Uh, using
trajectories and bullet drop from the sniper hide,
Phil and I deduced that
the bullets followed you in this order.
Shot number one, ker-klank. The glass door shatters.
Shot two, ker-bloom.
Right into the bench.
WOODY: And finally, shot three, ker-klank-arooney.
-Planter gets hit. -That's not right.
-Oh, what do you mean, Robin? -[sighs]
I saw the glint of the scope, then the muzzle flash.
The whiz and crack of the first round passed me.
That's the bullet breaking through the speed barrier.
-It's like a tiny sonic boom. -Dang, got to love science.
You only hear that sound if it's really close,
and I heard the planter exploding behind me.
Shot one.
When the next shot rang out, there was no whiz,
just a thunk. Shot two, you got that right.
But the last shot was the shattered glass.
But, wait, um, you and the admiral broke left, didn't you?
Why are all these shots tracking to the right?
Because the sniper wasn't trying to kill Admiral Cane.
The target was his wife.
We got to radio Lala.
[brakes squeak]
Thank you.
Welcome, Mrs. Cane.
Senator Hart's crew should be with you in 15 minutes.
We have a lounge upstairs where you can wait.
Thank you. Thank you.
I need to do a visual of the runway.
Of course, right this way.
GIBBS [over radio]: PE-20 to PE-18. Come in.
Your package is the target.
Lala, Julia Cane is the target.
Lala? You there?
[elevator bell dings]
He's a stubborn ass, my husband.
I hate leaving him like this.
The admiral's in good hands, don't worry.
-Okay. -[pager beeps]
I need to call in.
-I'll be right back. -Sure.
[sighs]
-[phone rings] -NIS.
LALA: Mary Jo, it's Lala. I got a page.
Oh, thank God. Lala, Gibbs and Randy
have been trying to radio you.
They don't think the admiral was the target.
-What? -The sniper was trying
to kill his wife, Julia, not him.
The target is his wife.
Mrs. Cane?
Darryl? What are you doing here?
Federal agent. Hands on your head.
Oh, my God!
Help! We need help!
Somebody help us.
[groans]
[grunting]
[grunts]
Ah! Ah!
[choking]
-[groans] -[grunts]
-[gunshot] -[groaning]
You okay?
[spits]
Never been better.
You know this dude?
He's Maggie's boyfriend.
-Your aide? -JULIA: Yes.
She knew that I was flying out of here.
You son of a bitch.
You shot at us. Why?
Why in the hell would you and Maggie want to kill me?
FRANKS: Greed. Maggie was stealing
from the Canes' personal accounts for months.
Mrs. Cane noticed something
wasn't right, started asking questions.
Maggie knew she was about to get caught,
so she tried to get her boyfriend to take out Mrs. Cane.
He was a former Ranger,
so he knew his best bet was to make it look like
an attack on the admiral.
Maggie tried to cut some kind of deal,
rat out her boyfriend,
but we didn't need it.
We got more evidence on the two of them than the day is long.
They're both going away for what they done.
By the time they get out,
folks'll probably be making computers
tinier than a mouse's ass.
That's a colorful way of putting it.
-Thank you. -Mrs. Cane
came to me last week with some concerns
about some missing funds in her personal account.
I told her I'd look into it after the town hall.
Maggie knew I took notes on here, and
she had her boyfriend attack me and steal it?
[clears throat] Yep.
All right, then. I appreciate the update.
[PDA beeps]
You know what you should be appreciating?
How about the fact that this Texas-talking country boy knew
how to stop the bleeding when you were dying there in Daly's?
Or maybe, you could appreciate how I led the team that solved
the case that took a couple of murderers out of your vicinage.
Oh, that's right. I know the word "vicinage."
I just prefer to use "neck o' the woods."
[laughs]
LALA: No. No.
You're not bothering me at all.
Oh, my God.
I can only imagine what kind of menace he was as a kid.
He just walked in. You want to talk to him?
Is that my dad?
Not at all. I get it.
He does the same thing to me.
Yeah, it's horrible. We should start a support group.
Mm-hmm. [laughs] Okay, I'll let him know.
You, too, Mr. Gibbs.
Bye-bye.
My dad met you once. He shouldn't be calling you.
Relax.
He got me by mistake.
But he said to tell you he's got to go to the airport soon,
and your cabinets aren't flush.
Mm. [stammers]
Okay. Bye. See you tomorrow.
Hey, maybe you should make a rule like...
[door closes]
"Never let cabinets come between family."
[blows]
Oh... You got to be kidding me.
I got to get going to the airport.
Cab's on the way, so...
-You're gonna have to finish these yourself. -Whatever you say.
Are you gonna listen to me for the two minutes I got left?
-I've been trying to talk to you. -Yeah, I know.
The cabinets aren't flush.
Yeah, what do you want me to do about it?
This place is a rental, Dad.
That's exactly what your wife said
just before she left in tears.
-What? -I told you,
she went back to L.A. early. She was upset.
-And what did you say to her? -No.
No, no, no, you're not putting this on me.
She was upset. I could see it on her face.
I asked her if she wanted to talk about it.
She said that you knew that the cabinets didn't shut right,
but you weren't gonna fix them 'cause you knew
you wouldn't be here forever.
She said it was the same with you and her.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
She said you both know things aren't right
between you, but neither of you are bothering to fix it
'cause you know you won't be here forever.
-In this apartment? -In the marriage, Leroy.
Okay. We're done. You can go.
If you're not gonna love her,
you need to be a man
-and end it. -Cab's probably waiting for you.
Listen to me,
if you can't love her...
I do love her!
You hear that?! What the hell do you want from me, huh?!
I married her, I love her!
Not the way you should, son.
There's something between you, she told me.
She thinks it's Shannon and Kelly.
I think...
Doesn't really matter what it is,
but if you're not fixing the cabinets,
then you're not planning on staying.
It's not fair to her.
You never even told her about your rules.
Why would I do that? I threw 'em away.
Because when you love someone,
you tell 'em who you are.
[horn honks]
["Drive" by The Cars playing]
OLDER GIBBS: At first,
it seemed like it was all gonna be okay.
But most times, problems don't go around fixing themselves.
You got to make an effort.
Mary Jo.
Yeah, that's me.
I was just wondering, uh, if you got
-the phone extensions working. -Yeah.
I told Earl I.T.,
if he didn't put the system back to normal,
I would quit stocking the freezer with his Pudding Pops.
-[laughs] -Oh.
What's wrong, honey?
Oh, with Herm being out, you know, I kind of liked
the extra spontaneous interaction.
You should've said something.
Hey, Randy just got his first paid gig
at the Laugh Lodge tonight.
He got bumped last night by some guy named Carrot Head.
You want to come?
I'd like that very much.
OLDER GIBBS: You make the effort,
you solve the problem.
It's good when it works like that.
But it didn't work like that for Diane and me.
She said she was gonna move to L.A. full-time
and focus on her career.
She told me she wanted to live life and heal.
She wanted me to find someone that made me happy.
And I wanted the same thing for her.
I don't know why we didn't file for divorce back then.
Maybe neither of us wanted to see
that final paper saying it was over.
But...
...it was over.
Much as my dad was a pain in the ass,
he was right about Diane and me.
I didn't love her the way I should.
โช Who's gonna drive you homeโช
โช Tonight...โช
OLDER GIBBS: Like he always said,
"You love someone, you tell them who you are."
