My name is Jedidiah Cooper,

I was born a slave.

But I was half way between a boy and a man

when I first heard the
guns of Mr. Lincoln's war

see any union soldiers.

to set us free.

got some hounds.

his eggs every morning.

let us join the army.

My Pa was gettin' so sick, he couldn't

prove himself and got

from the Yankee soldier.

During the short time

we had in Pittsburgh,
the wives and mothers

of our boys held a ball to raise money

for things like butter and sugar we hadn't

seen in the field for months.

sacrifice Jesse for all of us.

later and the war was over.

Jack and I didn't want to fight

no more wars after that.

But I guess we had to fight in that one.

Kirk and I were deeded some land from

the former Cooper estate.

Once bitter enemies, we now
work side by side as friends.

I wish my father had been around to see us

No crucible ever tests the human heart

as does a war.

I will never forget those walls hallowed

by the sufferings of our people.

Every inch, producing a painful memory.

reason to keep on hating,

turn my life over to him.

the human heart as does
