This is a long, long glove.

So I'm on the journey to discover what
real masculinity is, not what internet

says it is. If you think about it, real
man is responsible for providing food

for his family. So really real man is
responsible for providing food.

For everybody.

Food actually does not magically appear
in the grocery store.

It comes from somewhere.

So today, I want to meet with someone
who's responsible for providing food for

everyone. This is Farmer Claude. He
invited me to his farm in Tennessee,

he raises cattle, corn, and soy. I
wanted to witness a circle of life and

how an honest day's work can help feed
America.

All right, today we're at the ranch in
Tennessee.

We're going to do some manly shit.

Sir, thank you for your time. Glad to
have you. Appreciate you. Tell us what

we're going to do today. We've got some
replacement heifers we're going to feed.

We've got some cows we're going to
pregnant check.

And then we've got a grain bin we've got
to clean out.

And then we're going to hopefully
harvest some corn if the weather

I'm excited. It's going to be a good
day. Yeah.

All right.

Do some stuff.

Can we go and pet?

Uh, most of those. They're not going to
let you get close. So let's go. I can

get you close to some cows.

Gladys. Come here.

Gladys. Can I call her Gladys?

Our first stop was to meet some cows and
pet them. We were there at 6

o 'clock in the morning, so I got to
bring the ladies their breakfast.

Farming starts.

Very early in the morning.

Amazing. It's beautiful here.

Yeah, we are very fortunate.

Sometimes you get used to it, you take
it for granted, but most days I am

appreciative that my office is this,
this right here. You'll go by my

house and my brother lives on the other
side of the farm. Wow, so the whole

family lives. The whole family lives on
there. We're pretty lucky to have

everybody real close. Most families
probably are not like that.

No, this is like an American dream.

All right, go ahead and open this gate.

Maybe my goal today is that I don't do
any work.

That's the ideal.

This is where we keep the feed. Slide

Sheesh. You know how I said that we

about five minutes.

because they will lick the clear coat

All right, so this is a cattle feed.

They need a little bit of a boost. They
need a little bit more nutrition.

than just grazing on grass because
they're still growing.

We're going to break those new shiny
boots in for a few while.

It's very organic, like they are free
range, they're running around, they're

happy. Oh yeah, oh yeah, no, they've got
the best life. We do better financially

when we take better care of the cattle,
when they're relaxed, when they're

getting fed what they need to be fed.

Okay. My family back in Poland, they own
the farm. And I got kicked by a horse

when I was a child.

So I have a PTSD.

But... This was just a few cows on
Claude's farm. He owns

hundreds of them.

So we had plenty to do before the vet
got there. But thankfully, that gave us

enough time to get to know Claude even
more.

Daddy's coming with some food.

Why did you decide to be a farmer?

I grew up on a farm.

I was pretty lucky.

The men that I was raised around, a lot
of them were farmers or in agriculture,

and they were... So you had knowledge.

Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. When I was a kid,
I wanted to be like them. I mean, they

could fix anything.

You know, they could make anything work.
Real men. Yeah, that's right. That's

right. They got to drive.

they got to drive big trucks and
tractors and all of that and i was like

know what this is what i want to be
that's right that's right i want to be

that what's really rewarding for you i
mean i don't know if there's a more

cause or better people to work with to
me it's worth doing so and it's a

Claude's story is one I've heard a bunch
of times on this journey. He's

following in the footsteps of the men he
looked up to.

His farm was handed down to him by his
father and he's hoping to leave it to

children. Claude definitely got
emotional there while talking about his

tractor, which tells you that his father
definitely left his legacy behind.

That's the tractor that I learned to
drive on.

Dad bought it in 83 and we still use it
every day.

It's so important for men to have an
example and be an example for future

generations. Dad bought that new in 83.

And... Can Pablo sit in it?

Sure.

You know, it's strange the things that
get you, you know.

But Dad bought that tractor new in 83.

A lot of hours I rode next to him.

And that's probably what got me hooked.

Right there.

Probably started driving that tractor
before I was ready.

Dad put me on it when I was eight years
old because it had the cab. He wasn't

worried about me coming out of it.

But it'll never be sold.

It has its own soul at this point,
right? I mean, it's what my girls, they

drive it. My oldest does a lot of the
hay cutting.

Dad passed in 2015.

I'm sorry.

Cancer got him.

He fought it for four years.

And that's what got me.

away from school teaching.

Wow. You know, a piece of iron that has
a motor in it, you know, probably should

not have such an emotional attachment to
that tractor, but... Why not? Yeah, I

guess so.

Why not? That's all the memories there.
That's beautiful, amazing.

Now it's time for some pregnancy checks.

Having cows is very, very expensive.

Yep. So cows need to have babies, so the
babies can be sold, so they can make up

the cost.

If the cows are not having babies, they
are just not happy, and things get

weird.

This is a rectal sleeve, and so
basically, palpating cows, I go, we do

called transrectal ultrasonography. So I
go in rectally with an ultrasound

probe, and so I just wear this to keep
the manure off my arm.

couple buckets, and then we're going to

these cows in.

So we've learned that less than 50 % of
the cows were pregnant.

What that means to everybody.

Yeah, so it's hard on the farmer today,
right? So he had half of these girls not

pregnant, which indicates we probably
got a bull issue.

This was just bad luck today. This is
just bad luck today.

That's a big part of my job, right? So
we're going to try and figure out and

to the bottom of this issue on the farm.

We have to be decent mechanics and we
have to be decent agronomists and all of

that. You have to be a real man.

Yes. And we have to do a lot of
different things.

But when I've got a problem like this,
that's where I need him to help me

out what the problem is. I mean, it's
going to be, I mean, that's going to be

substantial financial hit.

It's heartbreaking to watch you being
disappointed when your cow is not

pregnant. I want the world to see what
you do and appreciate what you do

it's so important.

You guys are feeding the world.

I don't want to lose what my family has
built. We don't have to be rich. I don't

have to drive a new vehicle.

But I do want to keep this. I want to
keep this way of life.

Okay. Next thing, we had lunch with
Claude's family at his mother's house.

So this is my mother.

Over lunch, we got to talk to Casey,
who's Claude's farmhand

and former math student.

Casey, you said that this was your math
teacher. Mm -hmm. What made you want to

do farming?

I had nothing, like, in any direction.

I stayed in trouble all the time. I hit
a principal one time.

That's when I got in big trouble.

And then I got saved.

on a youth group trip and i'm like hey
i'm gonna have to straighten it out

during the summer his dad would call me
and i'd come out here and farm and do

stuff well then i got a job like uh did
not have any days off with my family

as far as holidays and stuff i worked
every holiday because you know you're

always chasing that dollar and claude
was like come farm for me i was like

yeah so we jumped in both feet at the
end it makes everything work kids get to

be raised outside It's been a joy.

I always worked some of the guys that I
taught.

I mean, I'd get some of them.

We got a long line of them that come
through here and had their feet under

table. Claude has taught me that a
really good man inspires others to be a

man too.

Claude and his father took Casey under
their wing when he had no other role

model. Because of that, Casey has turned
his life around and become a very good

man himself.

And he will be able to teach his
children.

those lessons remember kids it's never
too late to make a change to become a

came my favorite part driving the
combine it's huge

it's sort of intimidating it has the
chainsaw blades and his long ass teeth

it's cool but it is scary

But I was still hoping Claude would let
me drive it, even though I don't have

license to drive it.

Alright, we're here on the farm. We're
going to harvest some corn with this

humongous machinery.

Combine, that is.

It's actually petrifying, it's so big.

I can hack the tire. You want to see me
hack the tire? Fine, I'll hack the tire.

It's badass, it's big.

So, I'll learn how to drive this thing.

We're going to do some harvesting. I'm
pretty excited.

Those machines are petrifying me always.

They're pretty simple. There's nothing
to them. Let me explain the process to

you. These chains right here, they're
going to be spinning going that way. It

grabs the stalk, pulls the stalk down,
pops the ear off. The ear goes back,

that auger, goes to the middle of the
combine.

You'll be able to see what it's making
as we're going through there.

Interesting. Just follow me up here,

the business end of that.

So I think the most rewarding part, he
grew all of it. He grew it. It's his

fruits. And now he's mowing it all by
his hands in this big green thing.

I wonder if you can get DUI for having a
beer on that thing.

Last part of the day was cleaning out
the grain bin to make room for the corn

harvested. It was 90 degrees out and the
silo was metal.

So you can imagine how hot it was in
there.

We're cleaning everything that's inside
of that. Yes, we've got to get all that

corn out of there.

This is what it needs to look like. Oh,
great.

Hello. We're about to walk into the oven
here. We'll clean up some corn.

This year has been my toughest.

The tough times that you go through, I
mean, it's just going to help you down

the road.

We're passing through this earth.

I mean, we'll hand this farm off to the
next generation.

You know, my identity is in Christ, my
identity is not in how many bushels that

I make per acre.

And for some reason, I don't know, I
struggled with that this year worse than

some other years.

But now, we've got a little bit better
perspective, and now I'm going, God, see

how we're going to pull this off.

God wants me to farm, I'll keep farming.
He'll make a way.

What we're doing does matter.

You know, and our purpose is with
Christ, and that's really all that

And we just need to wake up every day
and go to work.

It's toasty.

He's building something that's bigger
than him. He's building something that

will outlive him.

Something that will provide for many,
many, many families in the future. It

makes me appreciate the man that came
before me. The man that sacrificed so

to make the world better than they found
it.

My cheeks are hurting me from smiling
all day long. Well, you are a fairly

entertaining person, so my cheeks are
hurting too.

And you didn't do bad. I don't know of
