Original subtitles

Are you shaking or am I shaking?

We're both shaking. I think we're all shaking, brother.

I'm Pavel, and be a man with me.

I'm Pavel, be a man with me.

A little more emphasis. Come on, more oomph. Your emphasis, dude.

Can we f***ing do this?

Alright, go ahead and take me a deep breath in.

It wasn't that long ago when police officers were being called heroes.

Police officers were actually an example of what real men should be.

Now everybody hates police.

They're assholes. They abuse their power.

We need to defund them.

So who's right? Who's wrong? I'm tired of listening to those smart heads on the

internet. I'm going to speak with the authorities on the subject.

The authorities.

This is Sergeant J .R. and Officer Narali.

J .R. is in charge of training for Hendersonville Police Department.

Officer Norali is on the streets on patrol every day. I asked them if I

right along and real police training with real police cadets.

I want to see what kind of things they deal with and what kind of men it takes

to be a police officer.

Good morning.

Good morning.

We're here with Officer Patrick.

We're going to do some traffic stops.

We're going to look for drugs. We're going to fight the crime.

You guys ready? No, we're good.

I hate being pain in the ass, but I would use one more time. You want to go?

I got to go to the restroom before we hit the road.

So I'm going to be asking you a question about all the gear and stuff because

it's very interesting. It's curious.

I see that you have something here.

Yeah. What is this that you have here?

It's a computer. Very complicated.

Just so you guys know, if crap hits the van, right, I'll roll down the windows.

And, of course, I'm going to jump out and do my thing the way you guys get

yourself out.

Old school, reach out of the handle, open it, because those doors don't open

from the inside.

Are those bulletproof windows in the back?

No. No. No, I wish.

So I am on the ride along. I was worried the entire time that someone will get

pulled over because of me.

So I wanted to ask the hard question and address the elephant in the room.

A lot of people say that a lot of cops are bad.

Yeah. When you hear in media, oh, defound police, defound police. Why is

coming from? Why does that happen?

Because you do have so much social media and everyone just wants to try to

attempt to make a quick buck, right?

Media only wants to show you the bad.

There's a lot more good than there is bad. But majority of the time and inside

of those videos that people see.

If you actually watch an unedited version of it, it shows a lot more of

leading up to it. They only want to show you the snippet so they can change the

narrative.

The reason why you get put over speeding, two reasons of an accident.

It's either speed, not paying attention, whether that be on your phone,

speeding, you're doing something, right? We all do it.

Especially teenagers, like, kick off the Instagram and drive safely for a

second. Yeah, like, I'll pull you over and I'll talk with you, but I typically

don't do a citation.

I'm not trying to bang you up. I just want you to stop bleeding.

That's it.

See, that's so generous and nice.

All right, so let's call it a LIDAR. So it's different from radar, right? If you

look through there, you'll be able to see that red dot.

You see it? Oh, yeah, I see it. And then if you start holding it, you'll also

see the speed in it.

Ah, that's awesome. You're more than welcome to step out and do your thing.

43. 50.

Holy shit. 63.

This one? Yep. This one right here? Yep, that's a 63.

Alright, we're going for it.

Damn! First one!

Let's go!

Let me see it.

Yeah, let's go!

Woo!

How cool is that?

How cool is that?

They're smiling. Look at those guys. They're smiling.

They're cool, man.

And done. No problem. Everything is okay. Look at that.

It just, huh?

Absolutely nothing.

Absolutely nothing. It happens. It happens. But I was smiling because I saw

guys smiling to the guy and apologizing. You're cool guys.

So what I realized, the cops look like big heads only because they have to be

charge.

A real man has to use his authority, even a regular guy at home with his

You gotta do what you gotta do, even if it doesn't make you Mr. Popular.

I started in 2012, which is right around the height of the Ferguson issue, so

it's steadily gotten worse from there from a media standpoint.

People think they have an idea of what this is or what we do, and they don't

really know until they come out here and do it.

Clips.

I'm not laughing because I'm one of the same shit, for sure.

Today we're doing EVOC. We're going to get you on the driving course, run

through a couple different tracks.

We work on things like handling collision avoidance.

Having authority also means having responsibility.

A man needs to know how to use it. Who is being trusted?

Is there a time limitation?

There's usually some PT involved for slowest time or who hits too many cones.

And each cone is like a five -second added penalty.

But don't come in last because you might have some PT to do. No, no. It's a good

motivator. It's a good motivator.

I'm about to do a precision driving. I'm looking forward not to fuck it up. I

have a feeling I will fuck it up. Well, give it to me without cutting.

It's hard to do, huh? It's hard to do.

There

you

go.

There you go.

40 hours a week behind the wheel of a car.

It's high frequency and high risk. Those are the categories you want to spend a

lot of time training.

So I am a big fan of walking pursuits. And I've noticed that you guys do a lot

of pit maneuvers.

I believe in a pit maneuver.

A pursuit is beyond dangerous to the community because that person is driving

100 plus miles per hour.

But if you can pit it, then you need to stop the pursuit, and then now we don't

have to worry about ripping eight miles across this city, right?

Yeah. That is some cool, you can't, like, it's dangerous, but it's like,

some badass stuff.

35 seconds. Yeah.

Maybe you found your calling in life.

Maybe. I got to tell you, Bishop is not about speed. No, he's not.

Bishop, sir. Why police officer?

I'm wondering.

That's what my dad did.

Bro, that was my hero. That's what I wanted to do, help people.

That's a right on money.

Mr. Adam, you?

Want to do something fun?

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

What motivated you to be a police officer?

Something I've wanted to do since I was little. I've got drawings from grade

school where I'd, you know, what do you want to be when you grow up? And I drew

little police cars.

If you want to go help people, you want to go save some people?

and you also want to get shitheads off the street that could potentially

endanger your own family or friends, what better place to do it than jump

into law enforcement?

You love it? I love it. And I could not see myself doing anything else.

Helping, coming in every day, enjoying what you do.

We're getting paid to drive fast today.

All right? That's a good one. No, it's a good job.

Listen, I'm not a precision driver. I did it.

You did it. I'm not doing PT. Thank you. No, we're about to PT.

You are? You are.

I am?

I am?

So I didn't lose at driving, but PT is ahead of me.

There's no sense of trying to catch a bad guy if you're weaker than a bad guy.

These cadets are doing this every single day. Hey guys, my name is Paweł. I

guess it cannot be that hard.

All right, here's what we're going to do this morning. You're going to start out

from here. You're going to run in front of the police department, run down to

executive. and then run up this access road. Whoever gets back first basically

gets to pick their exercises.

So there'll be six exercises.

One exercise is the dummy drag. We're going to drag it backwards to that cone.

The other exercise is lunges, farmer's carries, bear crawls, frog jumps.

Jump out, burpee. When you come out of your burpee, frog jump again.

Last exercise is going to be overhead tire carry. So arms are going to be

straight up above your head.

You're walking the outer perimeter.

of the grass all right and then that'll complete it questions all right if

y 'all are ready this is a lot of running and cardio is definitely not my

but i have a plan get ahead of everyone get the easiest exercise obviously

dragging the dummy then i can take my time with the other ones i don't feel

terrible about this but i'm not sure so we'll see what's gonna happen All right,

we'll begin in three, two, one, go.

All right,

Gels, come on, pick your poison.

Don't let him show you all up now.

You're going to drag it to that cone, and then once you get it past that cone,

you'll drop it.

Holy! I thought that would be the easiest one.

Gotta let's stay moving.

Effort.

Holy!

That is a hard one.

How many pounds is this?

I think that one's like 180, 200.

I thought it was gonna be like 60.

Where do I go?

So you start your next run.

Yeah, you'll take off on that same run that you did. When you come back, then

you'll pick a new exercise.

One round out of six complete in total. You don't have to do the dummy again.

No, I'm not doing it.

So run in between.

We changed the concept.

We want to watch from first power distance.

I was confident when I started the PT.

But by the end...

I learned that these guys work way harder than I thought. Okay, lean back

it. Keep the legs moving.

It's important as an officer and as a man to keep your tools and your body

for action.

How can I protect people if I can't run for more than 34 seconds?

Now I'm going to learn how to use the phaser.

Top them out, stuff them back in there and throw them away.

The responsibility you have to accept if you're a real man. You need to defend

yourself and others.

So you have to know how to do that.

So they told me that I have to get paid.

With this thing.

Look at this thing.

That's why it hurts like a bitch.

It's like a fishing hook, dude.

This is disgusting.

It's going to go through my body.

It's going to be great.

I'm really looking forward not dying.

Because if I die, what am I going to do?

So this is... So you'll flip it up to arm the taser? Yep. All right. So you're

going to press up as a target.

Laser taser!

Fuck!

I know JR mentioned that you went to the shooting scene in Colorado.

I don't know if you're willing to talk about it. Yeah, we can talk about it.

It's Club Q, a lone gunman, had an AR, and then, of course, had a pistol.

A military vet jumped after the guy.

The guy was actively shooting, shot the veteran three times in the chest. The

veteran lived.

He lived, but he was able to wrestle away the AR, and at that point... After

was shot?

Yeah. He got shot three times, and then he still won a fight?

Yep. Kept fighting, and then that's whenever the other patron with the shoe

jumped up and popped him in the head, knocked him out.

We go in, he's on the ground, you know, we stand over him, we cuff him, and then

at that point just started performing medical aid. It was just carnage. As

as you walk in, you can smell the, like, gunpowder, you know, from all the

firearms going off.

Just over 20 individuals shot.

Every person who was shot had a minimum of three gunshot wounds. Jesus Christ.

There were six deceased already as soon as we got there. They were already,

unfortunately, they passed away.

But out of all the others who were shot, we didn't lose one person.

I'm happy that I was able to be there, but I wouldn't wish that upon my worst

enemy. Never, yeah.

But that's part of the job.

Yeah.

Yeah. It's really unbelievable for me, you know, that you go through this thing

and then you go home, and then next day you do it all over again, no matter what

happened the day prior.

statistically they say you know an average person in their entire lifetime

experiences three to four like major traumas whereas within law enforcement

i mean realistically probably one a week right but that's another thing that men

are being told that they're pieces of shit all the time and all men are bad

know which is not true i bang look at you saving lives keeping everything in

line no and then coming home and dealing with it you know i have a bad day at

work and i think that i am you know and i think that i have a bad day and you

know what i'm going through is terrible but then i get this contrast well i

didn't save multiple people with tourniquets and see blood and all that

smell gunpowder so you know i just have a work yeah but i don't think that we

should compare each other and say oh well just because i do this it's nowhere

near what you're going through because at the end of the day you're just as

stressed out as i am right you have a bad day i have a bad day it doesn't

what led up to it we both have that feeling right yeah but you know what

not saving lives so at the end of the day yeah like we're bitching for no

really you know no i appreciate that

now comes the fun part

The cadets are being trained on how and when to use their taser in different

scenarios.

Police are trusted with using force against criminals.

And taser is one of the ways that they can do that without causing too much

harm. We're looking really at decision making. We're looking at how you handle

the situation, communication and all that. It's basically a free pass to talk

shit to people. So that's why we enjoy it.

JR secretly tells me the kind of bad guy I'm supposed to be and how I'm supposed

to act.

And then the cadets have to figure out how much force they have to use to get

to stop.

How they choose to react determines whether they pass or fail.

Mucho gudo. Let's go. I'm going to be a villain. And I'm going to be agitated.

And then psycho with a thick accent.

Do I look like an idiot?

Yeah, a bit.

Oh, good. Thank you.

You get dispatched to a park, you've got multiple calls for a subject pacing,

agitated, and talking to himself at the park.

The subject has a knife in his waistband, which is visible, but remains

waistband during the encounter.

Hey, sir, how are we doing today?

Who the fuck are you?

I'm Officer Joles of the Harrisonville Police. I don't give a fuck. Speak to

hand. Yeah, okay, well, why don't you come talk to me first? I'm going to do

whatever the fuck I want. You get any closer, you're going to get paced.

You going to tell me why you're pacing?

Because I like it.

Okay. Anything going on in particular?

A lot. Not your fucking business.

I need you to stand back from me. Why? I want a hug. I want a hug. Come on,

let's hug.

I want a hug, man. I want a hug.

No, come on, let's hug. Hey, no, no, no, no, no. What do you got in your

waistband there?

I have something fun.

Stay back. How about we hug? Let's hug it out.

Fuck!

Let's hug.

Stay back.

Taser, taser, taser.

Calm down.

Calm down, sir.

Is there too much costing?

No, right?

How's it going, sir? The fuck are you doing on my property?

Get the fuck out of my property.

Leave now. Get the fuck out of here. Go fuck yourself. You're on my property.

I don't give a fuck what you need. Out of my property.

Get the fuck out of here.

Zoom, zoom.

Zoom, zoom. I don't care. Get the fuck.

Don't tell me what to do. Go fuck yourself. Get the fuck out of here. It's

property. I pay taxes. Goodbye.

I'm getting my shotgun, pig.

I'm back off. Is that what you just said?

I'm getting my gun.

Nope.

Fuck yourself.

It's hot as shit. I told you.

All right. So what do you say when you turn around and walk back in? I'm going

to get my shotgun.

Yeah. We cannot let him get back to that front door, right?

If he makes it into that front door, now what do we got?

Barricaded person. We got a barricaded person. That's bad news, right? So you

got a guy that's aggressive. You got probable cause of making an arrest

Oh, yeah.

I'm still surprised on how little time officers have to decide

if they're gonna shoot or not.

Watching them work through the scenarios made me respect the pressure police are

under to do the right thing.

It's not about screaming orders at people or shooting at them.

It's about de -escalating the situation so it's not even more dangerous.

Where are the windshield wipers in this bitch?

Mama, I made it to Mars.

Was it good? Yeah.

You're natural.

The whole day was building up to it.

You want like a little overview of this bad boy?

No, just do what you guys do. Just do it.

Now it's time to get safe.

Part of understanding the authority is...

Knowing the consequence.

Plus, everybody else is doing it, and I'm not gonna be a bitch.

It is pretty gnarly.

Alright, give me a deep breath in, and out.

Deep breath in.

It hurts watching more than actually being hammered.

Got the second bar. I'm good.

All right, you ready?

Give me a deep breath in.

And out.

Deep breath in.

Woo!

Please don't do that again.

All right, give me a deep breath in. This is going to be the toughest I get

you guys. And out.

Deep breath in.

No, no, no.

I did not like that at all.

She wants to top it. I knew it.

Deep breath in.

I've never seen my hands behind the back like that. It's pretty awesome. I can't

move my legs.

Oh, God.

Damn, after this fiasco with the training before?

No, the PT?

Couldn't be a bitch on this one.

So these are for you.

I need two spotters with the iPro.

Are you ready?

What's the spread like?

All right.

Go ahead and take me a deep breath in.

And out.

Deep breath in, and out.

Deep breath in.

All right,

lay down there.

Good? All right, I'll come over here and look as far as the removal.

Damn!

Wrap it around, put it back.

So what did I learn today?

I learned that being a man means serving and protecting the community.

It means being trusted with authority and being responsible how to use it

properly. It means knowing how to use force in the order to keep the situation

from going bad to worse.

And most importantly, it's doing what is right, what is good, even when

everybody hates you.

You see why it's one of my favorite days?

Taser day.

I mean, you were smiling as you were shooting at me. It's because it came

place of pure enjoyment.
