V/O: Modern life is messy...

It's just really bad! .. and somebody's got to clean it up.

If you have a weak stomach, it's not for you.

Meet the people who get down and dirty

to keep the country spick and span.

Coming up. The first race is fast approaching now,

so wait for another hour. (chuckles)

One of our mottos is like you have to clean every square inch

inside and out like.

I'm just sick of looking at myself driving past every morning,

every evening coming into the yard. (laughter)

Yes, it's getting a little bit messier now.

This is Cleaning Up Ireland.

It's Ladies' Day at the Galway races,

fillies, fake tan, fun and fashionistas

and one epic day ahead for Ryans Cleaning.

It has its challenges.

Cleaning is 24 hour, so it's ongoing.

So there's a day shift, we hand over to the night shift. It's constant.

So this day last year we were about 25,000 people.

So hopefully we'll be in that region again.

'Would I see a horse? I see lots of horses.'

Would I take notice of a horse? No, I'm looking at rubbish.

'I'm looking at bins. When I go on holidays, I'm looking at bins.

I'm looking at rubbish. It's crazy. It gets in your blood, your mind.'

It's all good so far, going good. Nothing strange. Mmhmm.

V/O: With a busy race card and the buzz of 57 bars and restaurants,

Ryans Cleaning's 200 strong team

will be working flat out all day.

Take gloves, guys! Take gloves, please.

We have our core crew here, that work with us full-time

and then we are supplemented with um, with people from Galway.

So it's great. He is the boss!

You do very well yesterday. OK.

'Vasile is very good with the staff, but you have to be good with them

because if you're not good with staff, they won't work.

OK. You do a great job yesterday.

I'm happy. OK. This area...

OK? You have bags. We want a spotless ground now girls.

Yeah, and tables.

The first race is fast approaching now,

so it's calm enough now. Wait for another hour. (she laughs)

V/O: 25,000 pints will be served here today

and 6,000 glasses of champagne raised.

So Ryans need to keep on top of the waste.

Vasile, can you get someone to clear the tables please

outside the Guinness bar.

OK. (comms)

Go between the tables. Go between the tables, OK?

I'm on the walkies. Yeah, I have two walkies.

So I have our own walkie for Ryans

and I have a side walkie for event control.

So it's yeah, it's ongoing.

Because the crowd is moving all the time.

Now it's busy on this side, but when they starting the race,

you will be busy in the stand.

We try to keep clean behind them,

the same places we do again and again.

For this we need to understand the people,

they are coming to pay the tickets and to enjoy the event.

And they drink there and they throw away everything, you know.

V/O: As Vasile battles the crowds in Galway,

in Dublin, Carl and Alan are dealing with a different sort of pain,

under the ever watchful eye of the boss.

He does need a new face on it. It's a good picture,

but I remember when I first got my van, uh,

I'd say for about 2 weeks straight, my mam be coming into the bedroom.

Karl, there's someone out in that garden. There's someone out--

What do you mean...? There's someone in the garden looking into the house.

You'd look out the window. It's Luke on the side of the van.

If you catch it in a window quickly you'll think it's someone there.

Sometimes if the lads park really close to a window,

you might just think it's someone looking in.

He'll go mad now, because of the hair on the lip!

So that's why he's trying to rebrand the whole, the whole image now

because he doesn't like the hair on his lip.

We've a fleet of 14 vans on the road,

so kind of add, we're adding a couple each year now.

'I bought my first van in 2020, um,

so that'll be in the space of kind of maybe 5 or 6 years.'

V/O: Back before there were any vans, Luke started the business

with a 50 euro startup fund

and his granny's trusty Yaris.

'I was in college at the time and had very little money.'

'It was 50 worth of equipment.'

'I borrowed my friend's ladder, put it into my nanny's Toyota Yaris,

that got me on the road, started in, in a day.'

Very important house today.

Your nanny's house. Nanny's house.

There's a couple of things just that are happening with the house

I want to sort out today for her.

There's moss running along the front roofs, so we treat the front roofs,

kill off all the moss, and we'll clean out the gutters.

We'll clean all the outside of the gutters,

clean windows, frames, doors. Super. What's the story? Gis a hug!

How are you keeping? Good, good. All good.

A cup of tea, Luke? Yeah, I'd love one. OK.

Remember when I started the cleaning company for the first time?

Oh yeah, I think he came to clean my windows first, wasn't it?

And then the neighbours next door, I said, that's my grandson.

So, OK, we'll give him the job, you know, word of mouth.

And now you have how many vans? 14. 0h my God, 14 vans!

That's incredible, isn't it? Yeah.

I think he's going to be a billionaire. (Luke chuckles)

And he might buy Nanny a bigger house. (both laugh)

Yeah!

This is our original branding.

So he is a Canadian model that I bought the rights to.

Like, he looks very Canadian, so...! (ping)

We wanted someone who looks a bit more Irish, so we were ages

trying to find out who to put on it.

So this gorgeous fellow here, the pale complexion... (chuckles)

.. blends in a bit more to the white background.

I'm just sick of looking at myself driving past every morning,

every evening, coming into the yard. I won't miss my face at all

on the side of the vans. Even on the website, I'm kind of poking around.

Yeah, we're looking forward to getting actually

something proper done for the side of the van.

V/O: While Luke might have fallen out of love with his face

in Navan, County Meath, one man's passion for cars

has led to a 20 year misunderstanding.

My name is Michael O'Brien from Car Lovers.

Some people get very confused with that.

They think it's Carl, a name like, Carl Overs.

Sorry, what's your name? No, it's not Carl. It's Car Lovers.

'21 years, just flew though, do you know what I mean?'

I've actually dedicated my whole life to this probably like,

at this stage, you know, so I'm not going to probably

This is probably it until... until that's it.

Michael just eats and breathes and sleeps, cars, absolutely.

The cars are always on his mind, you know, he just loves them.

We are car lovers as well, like, but like ... the slogan is there,

as you said, we know everyone loves their car.

You know, you buy your car, because you like that car.

I'd be... throw anything to me. I'd take a challenge on anything.

I don't be afraid of anything.

You know, we understand no matter what it is,

whether it's the kids or a paint spill or diesel spill

or oil or-- Oh, we've done everything.

Kerosene spill, beer spill,

wee, dog foetus! (she giggles)

Rabbit foetus... that got me the ringworm

Puke. You know, a lot of people would turn away work like that.

But I'm... game ball, I'd be, wouldn't be afraid of doing nothing.

I don't think there's very... many jobs

I wouldn't turn down, like, you know.

V/O: And for this motorhead, there's no such thing

as a car that's too far gone.

But this customer's neglected Nissan

is going to call on all Michael's years of experience.

This is a Skyline R32 that I used to work on 21 years ago.

And I've had it back in here now, it's not been on the road

for the last 12 years.

This is up there, definitely on the outside. This is up there.

(dramatic music)

It will be a challenge. I have to say, that's what we love

about the job, to see the start and the finish of the cars.

We'll bring that back. I know we will.

You got a little bit of rust bubble here as well, so,

that'll probably need a bit of work. The wheels as well.

They're all corroded in here and they're starting to flake.

This will all have to be refurbished.

All these little things make a difference in the end.

So the first step we want to get,

is blow everything loose out of the car.

Yeah, still to this day, you're only as good as your last car.

You know what I mean, one of our mottos is,

you have to clean every square inch inside and out.

You have to try and be right on every single car,

and that's our motto and you just have to have it right, simple as.

I like to deliver cars and do all the books.

And keeps it flowing so you do, only for you, you know?

You're the engine I'm the fuel! (chuckling) That's a good one!

Maybe I'm the coolant as well.

The coolant, to keep everything cool. To keep you cool!

Even the model cars have to get cleaned every now and then.

So now we're going to snow-foam it. This is the reveal

to see what the paint is like underneath.

Right, this is the satisfying part now.

Days you could spend on a car, but really we try and do

as good as we can in the time frame we have.

We're putting on the surgical gloves for the cars now.

So this is going to be the operation now.

V/O: As Michael starts the surgery, back in Galway,

it's race number 4 of 8.

25,000 racegoers are partying.

And the Ryans Cleaning crew are under pressure

to keep up with the pace.

We are like a machine, you know, we do our things.

We don't judge the person.

This is most important.

See, we find a lot of wallets and documents.

We find this wallet in that area, OK.

Yes, it's getting a little bit messier now as in...

.. everyone has a few drinks in

and they're not actually putting their...

.. um, their pint cups into the bins.

They're just leaving them on the ground or putting them

on the tables. Lots of bookie slips.

It's just ongoing, as we say.

Vasile, can you get someone to come

and do a litter pick please in front of the Killanan,

on the steps, near the at the racetrack.

You have to trust your team because if you don't trust your team,

you know, you're at nothing.

"OK, I'll send now, my team over there."

There was a crowd sitting here. Now they're after getting up,

they're after moving. So as you see, this is the mess

they leave. You see just along here, yeah.

V/O: And in the tsunami of litter,

sure, you never know what you might find.

They throw away everything and the money they throw away, you see.

Yeah, no, we give to the guys because they work hard.

For you! Thank you.

And take the bags.

For them, because they are students,

they work very hard and every money counts, you know?

'Why do people leave so much?'

'It's just when alcohol is involved,'

'perception goes out the window at times.

V/O: And it's not just the food and drink that make a mess.

There's a fair few Cinderella stories too.

Shoes, sandals that's left behind.

Yeah, broken sandals, flip flops, headpieces.

Amazing what people leave behind.

Everywhere.

Umbrella, shoes, this kind of thing.

We leave them until the end and if they are good,

we leave to the Lost and Found, or to the Garda.

After 2 or 3 days, they're coming back and they ask about them.

(crowd chatter, cheering)

She is not looking too good.

He's probably the most Irish looking person

I've ever seen in my life! He's a good looking fella.

We have a winner.

You know, I don't think people even realise the amount of rubbish

that they actually leave.

V/O: Back at the office, Luke has a shortlist of new faces

for the van and sister Eva, his logistics expert,

is on hand to give a second opinion,

even if it is the first she's heard of it.

So yeah, I just found out today we are looking

to put someone else on the side of the van other than Luke.

So I think Kyle's in the running

and then my cousin apparently, he's going to be coming up.

So I'm again,

found out this morning, had no idea this was happening!

Today's the day we're doing the new face of the Cleaning Company.

So we're changing over from me to someone else.

We have a photographer out, to get photos of a few of the lads

and we're not sure yet who it's going to be.

I think my cousin would be a good shout.

Luke just came in to me and said, what do you think of Tom

being on the side of the van? And that was actually...

I said, that's a good idea.

He's probably the most Irish looking person

I've ever seen in my life.

'He is from County Kerry, has orange hair, white, freckly.'

Like he's the type of guy that you'd, if a van drove by,

you'd be, Oh my God, look at him. Typical Irish dude, like.

'We've whittled it down to Tom, who's the wild card,'

'Karl with a K.'

'And Kyle, that's what it's been shortlisted down to.'

So, yeah, yeah, you're looking directly towards me,

you know something, Luke... Would you have an old iron

that you can run over? I could possibly grab one, yeah.

The mammies will probably go, Jeez, they could have thrown

an iron over that shirt. (Luke laughs)

'I'm Luke's first cousin. He texted me one day there'

a few months ago, and he said he wanted someone

with a big Irish hat on them, and I think I fit the bill.

That's not doing a whole lot, is it?

It's doing a bit, no, it's doing ok.

Do up your buttons, up to the-- Yeah, fix the--

If you fix the collar, we need to-- Where's the stylist?

Absolutely sweatin'!

He was looking at the van and what way it'll be configured on the van.

So he's getting every possible angle we need.

That's great, Tom. You're doing great.

They look good. Yeah? Yeah.

Right. That's great, Kyle. He's a good looking fella.

'Kyle's with us a long time and he's been in pretty much

every role you could be in, in the company,

so it would be cool if he was on the side of the van as well.

It's always something, something new every day.

'At the start it could be going normal and they'd be like, right,

we're going to do this at the end of the day. I don't mind that, like,

because it's part of the role. It's adaptability -

within a small company of like things can change like

fairly quickly.

Never off my tippy toes, me.

KARL: Oh yeah, I got a phone call off Kyle.

'Yeah, we can see that you're nearly finished our last job.

Just come back up to the yard, get a few photos taken.'

And relax and get into it. Yeah, yeah, go on Karl!

(laughing) That's beautiful! That's great.

James Bondy type thing. So you're sort of folding your arms.

Like, the squeegee is the gun.

Bring the two hands together, so the squeegee is the gun!

But you're not actually doing the gun!

I'm trying to-- You're not making a gun!

I'm no squeegee. Oh... oh!

(laughter)

(Bond music sting)

I have my favourites obviously, uh, because it's someone in my family.

So these ones are all-- Tom. Tom's ones.

I like the thumb up ones. They're all actually... good.

V/O: It's time for the big reveal.

Will the new face of the cleaning company be Karl, Tom or Kyle?

So this is it, the new van.

Um, it's 2 months in the making and it's finally got delivered up

and we went with Tom Kelly.

'Tom, on the side of the van, I think he looks deadly.'

I think he looks like the most Irish person ever.

'Two people thought that that was AI generated!

Like, make me a really Irish-looking person, like!

Because it kind of looks like that,

but it's just Tom Kelly from Kerry, like.

V/O: Back in Navan, there are clouds on the horizon

for the neglected Skyline.

She is not looking too good at you to be quite honest.

The paint is pretty damaged underneath it.

'Some dried water marks as well from over the years, probably.'

It is worse than expected, yeah, definitely.

A bit nervous now, a bit worried

to see how well it will come up like, you know.

(brush scraping)

Vitalie started working here about a year and a half now nearly,

you know, so he's fully deaf.

He is Moldovan, so we've a bit of a language barrier there between us.

So there's no English at all.

'So we have to Google Translate.'

'And then our own little hand signals that we have

'for doing wheels or for doing door jams. When he started there,

about a year and a half ago, I have to say it was a massive,'

massive barrier, but since then we've grown together

and bonded together, you know what I mean?

'And I brought him to a couple of car shows and that as well,

and he just has the passion for cars. You can see it in him,

and he's brilliant, I have to say.

Yeah, right, so this is our detailing studio

where all the magic happens for the outsides of the cars.

We felt that we needed to move with the times

and the times was getting into all this detailing business

and all that and, uh, since we have done it,

it's tenfold, the business maybe in the last few years.

Right, so I'm after putting that sticker down then to show

the difference between uh... what it was like

and what it will be like after we get it buffed.

Ready Brian, we'll work our magic now.

(high-pitched whirring)

'It's just physically constantly rubbing and moving

and, you know, I nearly used to say my right hand

was for the polishing hand, my left hand was for the cleaning hand.

You know, to try and balance your body out, like.

'I know every pain possible in this game like you know.'

We'll show this little bit now that we taped up in the beginning

and see the difference of polished around it, and not polished.

You can see the visual difference of the paint straight away, like,

you know what I mean and that's just on the bonnet, so I can't wait

to see the rest of the car when it's all pieced together.

(dramatic music)

There's a little bit of touch-up there. Look for the navy touch-ups,

when you see something, you just have to go back and get it,

you know, it just has to be right. (chuckles)

'Please God, he'd be happy with it now, you know?'

V/O: And after plenty of TLC from Michael and his team,

it's this old car's time to shine.

Yeah, that's some job.

Some finish on it, isn't there? Mmm.

God, that's some difference, Michael. It's lovely!

Does that bring back memories, man? Big time, big time!

Do you remember the days of driving them around? I'm blown away.

It's... a different car.

Oh, sure, to see the car finished and it shining

at the end was just amazing. Like, you know, it was class.

You know, it just brought back memories of when I used

to clean in the beginning, like.

It has that finish again and has the nice smell back on the inside

and everything and at least you can take pride in it again, like.

It's just unreal. Do you know? We done it 21 years ago.

We are now in business 21 years. What an achievement.

I'd love to be 21 years younger again, I tell you!

That just brings back memories. Just class, I just love it.

Today 21 years ago boys, was the day that I started

Car Lovers Valeting. We really appreciate all the help

that we got, all over the years.

Jeez, I feel like I'm after winning a Formula One race.

(cheering)

'To us we're so used to it now. We're just on to the next car

and we just keep doing what we love, and we'll keep going,

for as long as I can.

Or for as long as the body will let me do it, you know?

V/O: Back in Galway, it's the last race of the day,

but for Ryans, the finishing post is still some way off.

So last race, now this is where it gets very messy.

We split now, and we do like a circle. OK?

Are you picking up rubbish? Exactly!

(whooping)

'As the day goes on, the mess then that's after, you know,'

after them is just, it's amazing what people leave.

'You know, I don't think people even realise

the amount of rubbish that they actually leave.'

What is most important for us,

with what we do - to be happy, our boss.

We see different places, everywhere.

Like today we are in Galway,

but next week we are in Reading,

we are in London, we are in a different city,

you know, and for this, it's interesting, this job.

V/O: And at the end of a hard day's racing,

it's not just humans who need cleaning up after.

So the time is 9 o'clock.

So it's a long day since 10 o'clock this morning.

The cleaning we do often goes unnoticed by the general public.

'Sometimes, sometimes you will have them coming up

and they'll say, oh, brilliant job.'

'Then you have people and they will just come and they could just'

vomit in the corner. That's what you have.

Next time... If you have a weak stomach, it's not for you.

Yeah, I need to be more careful because they are really drunk,

so anything could happen.

I love cleaning the toilet. It's really, like, oddly satisfying.

This is after every show, straight in, get this part clear.

This probably has never been done before.

That is not acceptable.
