V/O: Modern life is messy.

It's really bad. .. and somebody's got to clean it up.

If you have a weak stomach, it's not for you.

Meet the people who get down and dirty

to keep the country spick and span.

Coming up... Oh my God, look at the floors.

That's urine, pee.

You can smell how bad it is.

Good man! Oh, we do this every night.

This is the best job ever.

The one thing you don't want to do a bad job here,

and lose this contract for the company.

V/O: This is Cleaning Up Ireland.

V/O: Owner of Maid in Ireland, Tati,

is used to cleaning up after people,

but today she's assessing an empty house

that's more challenging than most.

The owner of this home was an animal lover

and her menagerie really made its mark.

So I'm here to do an assessment of the house.

The owner of the house, she passed, and then now,

the family is going to sell the house and then we're going

to clean it before they selling it.

I am expecting this house to be very dirty

because there is, I don't know how many cats.

They don't give me like the numbers, but I know there's lots

of cats and dogs inside this house.

Whoa. Oh my God.

This... it smells really bad.

So if you actually like... going here look!

'When I go there assessing it...' That's the hairs!

'That's when I see like, Oh my God!

This is going to be like, a challenge.

Oh, actually inside, it's clean.

She was looking after the pet's OK, isn't it?

Oh my God.

Yeah, it's a big challenge, but it's enjoyable.

Look at the cobwebs.

Look.

You can see this hasn't been cleaned for years!

Oh my God.

Basically, this is what we're going to do when we clean,

because it's so stuck in here, look!

Oh my God, this is disgusting.

Oh, I smell it.

Oh, look at the flies in here, like everywhere.

They smell of it. It's disgusting.

This is really bad.

Everything here smells bad.

'So in Brazil, I'm actually like a teacher, I'm graduated there.

'I decided after my graduation, I finished college and everything.

I decided to move, just for a while.'

So like after like 19 years now, I'm here.

Look at, look in here, look!

'I didn't know how to speak the language.'

'The only thing then actually I could think about

is just kind of like cleaning.

And then probably here is where the cats were living,

and then I guess this is one of the really bad rooms.

When I actually started, I just wanted to survive.

It is hard work. This is not easy.

So that's one thing that I have to prepare.

100 pairs of gloves in here, because I think that wouldn't be enough.

Oh my God, this one is even worse.

V/O: The evidence of so many cats and dogs calling this place home

over the years is everywhere -

from pet hair, rotten food, and that distinctive aroma of...

Well, just be glad this isn't smell-o-vision!

With my knowledge, knowing how to clean,

I am the one training all my cleaners

'because I am the one that I want to make sure that we--'

I keep the good service, no cutting corners or anything.

Look at the floors, this is all piss!

Because you can smell how bad it is.

'When you do good things, good things come back to you.

This is my goal in life.

We're actually going to like on our knees

and we're going to scrub it.

And we have to clean like, top to bottom.

So floors, the... walls as well, because there is a lot of cobwebs

even on the walls, it's not just in corners.

And especially the floors.

You know, it's going to make us sweat,

to make sure that one is going to be cleaned properly.

Like, only one day to do it,

so we're going to be two teams in here.

This is going to be very hard.

It will be... not just a normal deep clean this time.

V/O: As Tati takes in the scale of cleaning this home...

.. in the Dublin mountains, it's an early start for Luke

and his team of 21st century window cleaners.

Saturday rituals. Sit in all day. Football on.

Who do you support, Karl? I'm a super Leeds man.

Go'way man. Leeds. Who are you? United. Manchester United.

Could have said this before you put the two of us in the van.

'Alan and Karl are... they're two excellent guys out on the road.'

'They're the type of guys that you don't really hear from at all.'

There's never any problems. They get their list of work - it's just done.

Bad old day now to be out doing window cleaning today.

Yeah, it's a big old place we're going to today, isn't it?

Yeah, the Killashee Hotel.

'Like that's one thing about this company.'

'You have a lot of big clientele like this,

and they have full trust in you that you'll go out and do a good job'

Actually this hotel is known for the weddings and stuff.

They'd hold big, big events as well, don't they? Yeah.

Like we just go, do the work, get a sign off, and then we're done.

I was always looking for a business idea or a gap in something.

Growing up on the farm, I was always doing different things.

Like I found out that someone would pay you for pallets.

So for wooden pallets, I found that you get a few euros per pallet,

and there was always pallets in the yard that my dad had.

So I started just stacking them up.

So I was always looking for different ways of making a few bob.

Window cleaning was the next one that I thought would be handy to get into.

So I am scheduling that in for you.

I'm going to send you pictures just on WhatsApp.

'So I just thought if you can do something really simple, really well,

then that's the way to go.'

I'll start around the far side. You go over this side.

Water manage as well. I'd say after in an hour, come back,

just check how far the tank has gone down.

600 litres that tank, is it? 600 litres, yeah.

So the Cleaning Company.ie is Ireland's first subscription-based

window and gutter cleaning service.

'We do all sorts of clients from a one-bed apartment

right up to big government contracts like Áras an Uachtaráin.'

V/O: You'd think the rain would give these window cleaners a day off.

Nope, no shortcuts in this business.

KARL: It's the one thing you don't want to do a bad job here

and lose this contract for the company.

This job possibly could be paying someone's wage for the month.

The rain doesn't bother me. As long as it's not cold,

it doesn't bother me at all. I'm never cold in this job,

because you're moving.

'Working in the rain poses lots of different challenges.'

Visibility and being actually able to see the windows

because they'll be wet when you're there. So a really wet window

generally won't look as dirty because it's hard to see.

'And when you're leaving, it won't be in any way dry.'

'So you kind of have to give it an extra scrub, an extra rinse

and just kind of hope that that's been a good enough job.

KARL: Because they're sitting inside the window, I'm on the outside.

They're probably sitting inside thinking,

'Look him staring at me, eating my breakfast.'

Literally you blank out, you can't see past the...

.. the glass itself because you're constantly just looking at the glass,

looking at any blemishes on it.

'We have an employee of the month every month.'

It takes into account all the different things -

the volume of work they've done, the amount of re-cleans they've had,

'or not had - or sometimes they just won't have any at all.'

'How they've got on that month - that's all kind of coupled together

into choosing an employee of the month.'

Oh, drownded!

No stopping us.

'If someone wins it a couple of months in a row,

it's someone needs to take them off their throne.

KARL: It pushes you that bit harder now for the employee of the month.

It's mine, Karl. Come on! (both laugh)

V/O: As Karl and Alan haggle over the title,

Dublin City Council's night shift crew is coming on duty.

Good man! We do this every night. This is the best job ever.

'So for the next 8 hours we'll be monitoring the areas,

making sure that all the litter bins are free

and all the streets are cleaned to a grade A standard.'

So that includes washing and removal of litter.

V/O: Under the watchful eye of supervisor Sean Michael,

the 50 strong night crew have until 5 a.m.

to get the city centre back in shipshape.

Tonight, John and Peter are tackling Dame Street first.

Johnny just surface cleans it first,

then I'll get the power gun out and we'll wash it all off again.

That's what you have to do. He's just to get the top dirt off

and then I wash all that black off with the other gun.

It will take you about five hours just to do this area.

There's or four or five wash vans out all together.

'The staff on the night shift are some of the most dedicated.

To come to work, you know, in one day and finish the following day.'

'That's difficult on the body. It's difficult on family life.

You can see now when Johnny's finished. I'll get the power gun

and wash all this now. Then he'll stop there, and I'll do that.

Surface-clean there, then he'll wash it with the gun.

So we take turns at each. Not one fella doing all the hard work.

(chuckles)

'Jean Limbo - he's about 30 years us, Peter's about 10 years with us.'

They're a really good crew. They've worked together for a long time.

'Jean is from the Congo. Peter's from Crumlin.'

You couldn't get two different kinds of backgrounds,

but yet they just seem to work. They really work well together.

So I like now night shift because it's very... No busy traffic,

but busy for people.

Often weekend, you know, weekend from Thursday, Friday, Saturday,

people are very busy.

I moved here in 1998.

I remember I started in June 2000.

They give me six months prove time.

So after six months, so I was, uh, I was kept like, a job.

So now it's nearly 26, 25 years.

They have to be ultra vigilant in certain areas.

'So health and safety on the night shift is not more important,

but they're more vigilant with our health and safety.

Temple Bar is a very busy place here in Dublin.

So most of the tourists when they come here,

they have to visit Temple Bar.

When people are drunk after - that is more busy,

bad people, good people.

Everywhere in the world is the same thing.

Even in my country, the Congo is the same.

When people drink, people has no control, you know?

Like this after alcohol... people drunken like this.

People don't think the same, you know. They change...

Everywhere is the same!

'So you're always conscious of that - your environment.'

'Obviously people are coming from different venues,

different conditions, whether they're sober or... drunk,

we have to be aware of that.

Watch your back there!

The big sweeper should be here now in a minute.

You'll see him coming up the channel and picking all them papers up.

V/O: Tati has returned to the scene of the animal grime,

and this time she's got the Maid in Ireland crew

ready to gear up and get stuck in.

Right guys, the plan is going to be...

Claudia, you start in the bathroom.

Lily, you stay down, and then Simone and Vagner,

you're going to do the bedrooms.

You start cleaning up the floors and try to get rid of the smell.

All the cobwebs, skirting boards, doors, everywhere has to be touched.

Everyone's good? Good! Yeah.

(claps hands) Right, let's get to work.

We're going to like try to get like all the cobwebs first.

Everything from the top goes on the floor.

'People make this mistake in thinking,

oh, because there is no furniture in the house,

it would be easy to clean, but it's not,

because the house is all exposed.'

'Deep cleaning is like, all these skirting boards,

there is no furniture to hide it. You actually have to pass your hand'

in every little corner of the house

because one exposed - you're going to see it.

So everything has to be clean.

So is it is harder than the regular clean - definitely it is.

This is like... another level.

V/O: The team gets to work on one of their biggest challenges yet,

and it turns out not all this house's former residents

were house trained.

So this is the cat poo. Wow, it looks like it's a dog poo

because it's massive.

Well, this is all poo, cat's poo, and dogs' poo in here,

and this has been a challenge.

'Oh this extreme dirt for us is like,'

it takes a lot of effort for us because it's a lot of physical.

You know, our body feels it.

It takes us like even more effort because we sweat

and then we have to keep... it's like a workout,

so don't need to go to the gym today, let's put it that way.

SEÁN MICHAEL: They've been got at by animals

or just kicked by the general public going by.

Here to announce the big employee of the month,

and the winner of this month is...

This room in here, the worst room that I ever done in my life.

V/O: Window cleaners, Karl and Alan really enjoy their work.

It's just getting there that's the problem.

That's one thing, the annoying thing is the bloody traffic.

Oh, stop. This morning, behind a cement lorry.

The thing crawling up the road the whole way. (chuckling)

The first windows I ever cleaned was on my dad's house.

I was squeegee-ing, so I was old school. I started out like that

and thought if I could cover a wage of at the time, like 10 euro an hour,

if I could earn 10 an hour cleaning windows, I'd be delighted with that.

KARL: 'I used to work in retail as a assistant manager.'

'I liked the job, but like it was constantly stressful.'

'Like, you're bringing the workload home with you.'

'Your last job of the day here, you totally switch off.'

That's it. You can kind of switch off at the end of the day

and not think about it.

Good. Lovely day to clean windows. Oh, it is!

The water that we use is treble purified water,

so everything is took out of it, so there's no nutrients

or anything left in the water.

This water basically eats away at any dirt that's on any surface.

So what you're doing first, you're scrubbing the window with a brush

and you're getting all this heavy, heavy grime and dirt off.

Once you have the window done, uh, you're then rinsing.

So the rinse is actually the main part of a window clean.

Once you get it scrubbed and then rinsed,

the rinse will get everything that's left on the window off.

That's not to say that we missed anything.

There's always a few little bits left on it after you scrub it.

So you always start from the top, work your way down, rinsing,

and once this is drying up, it dries absolutely crystal clear.

V/O: Luke's on his way to meet Karl and Alan,

and one of them is going to be particularly pleased

to see the boss.

LUKE: Like, Karl is very in out job done, quick go.

'He does a really good job, but he just wants to go, go, go, go, go.

He doesn't stop for lunch. He doesn't stop for anything.'

He just works, works, works, which is fantastic

because he ploughs through the work.'

'Whereas Alan is the opposite. He's a bit slower, a bit...'

'He likes to chit chat. He likes to meet with the customers.'

He's good with the older demographic.

'So it's a difficult decision between these two lads in particular

and they're both different in how they operate.'

Brand new van ready to go for the employee of the month,

so fingers crossed, it's mine this month.

Oh, I'm definitely in it to win it. I'm hoping it's me now that gets it.

Seven months on the trot. Hopefully we can make it eight!

You missed a bit, Karl.

(chuckling)

Well, I'm ready to get the keys off him anyway to the van.

You know, and he might have a little trophy for me, just to go with it.

The decision's been difficult. I should have had it this morning,

but I didn't, and I'm still kind of teasing out in my head

as to who will, uh, who will be the winner or who will be

the better of them because they're both brilliant.

Lads, how are we?

Howya Luke! Howya Luke. Not too ba How'd you get on today?

Grand! Grand. Yeah? Here to announc the big employee of the month.

So it was a tough decision, very tough decision.

Toughest one I've had in a while, and the winner is going to win

this nice bottle of bubbly and also getting to drive the new van.

He'll be getting the keys to the new van.

'All the lads clocked off early last Friday.'

'I don't even know if it's pride. It's just this wave of good feeling

that, you know, this, it's something good

that I've done and it's a good space.

The work has shown, and this has shown greatly as well, that,

that Luke appreciates him.

He wins it this month. He won't get it next month. It's coming home.

I feel a little bit bad for him, not too much though, you know?

Tati and her team are about to get to grips

with the most challenging room in this pet owner's former home.

We just want to start the worst room in the house.

This is the worst, the worst room.

So cobwebs everywhere, black glove every-- everywhere!

The worst room that I ever done in my life!

We should have done this first because everyone is so tired now.

But I'm just kind of like, 'Keep going guys we can do it!'

And then we go home, so that's what it is now.

V/O: And eventually this house is beginning to feel more... human.

10 hours working in here now.

But we did it one day.

Well done to the team.

They've been amazing. They've been brilliant in here.

Well, actually, the house is starting to look pleasant now,

you know, already like you can see the difference.

It's more like, you know, feeling like the energy in the house

is just back to actually like, clean.

Wow, I'm not even using any mask now. Look, amazing.

Oh like fresh, new home. We're done.

This is the worst now, I'm going to classify it like the worst.

Because there is a long time I haven't been

working like this with them. I help them,

here and, you know, small bits here and there,

but not actually the whole day.

Yeah, go home, have a shower and sleep.

That's like the plan for the evening.

but the Dublin City Council night shift

still have their work cut out for them.

The challenge from an operational point of view,

obviously it's dark. We're not seeing...

'You're not seeing every hazard that's out there.

So they have to be ultra vigilant in certain areas

where they go and clean and how they clean.'

V/O: For Sean Michael, keeping the city has been a family affair.

'I started off in 1987 as a boy messenger -

colloquially known as a gopher, messenger boy, a nipper.

'So I was 16, almost 17. Dad was in the council before me.'

'It was the recession. This was a way of keeping his son employed.'

'I'm always grateful for it. He started this.'

So I'm always grateful for the fact that he put me into the council.

So this is typical of what we find in the city centre.

Bags left out by commercial premises for collection.

They've would have been got at by animals

and ripped open for food waste

or just kicked by the general public going by.

Christy, can you come into the edge of Moore Street

and get this waste for me?

So what we do now is we get somebody, one of our crews in

and we got it cleaned up as quickly as possible.

'My role is to manage all aspects of the of that night shift.'

So this is a typical task that you come across

as a waste management supervisor and inspector -

and even coordinators. If we see this type of waste,

we contact the crews as quickly as possible

and try and get it done quickly and safely.

It is difficult at times. We've got the expertise.

There's a lot of staff here in a long, long time.

They're very professional at what they do, very safety conscious.

It seems like a thankless job, but it's not.

It might be rubbish to other people,

but for us it's our way of earning money.

When I grew up, my father always said we were invisible

because we didn't wear-- there was no PPE.

There was no yellow jackets when I joined.

'We were just taken as part of the landscape.

We're not ignored anymore.'

'When I was a kid, we were just taken for granted.'

We're not now. We're part of the fabric of Dublin City.

Just over 8 years. Yes, take pride in it, alright.

Sure... I live in the city, so it's part of my culture and all.

That's why it's no problem cleaning it up, you know.

I'd like to leave the city the way I would like to see it.

So yeah, there's a pride and I think most staff have that.

'I'm here in DCC a lifetime.'

'It's hard not to take pride in what we do.'

So what's happened is that the soles have separated,

the glues have all broken down in the cleaning process.
