Ruby: Doesn't all the baa-ing destroy your concentration?
Finn: Not every school in Ireland
is by a sheep farm, Ruby.
- Hey, don't burst my sheep bubble!
It could happen.
[chuckling]
- Are you thinking of that exchange program then?
We call that a grand idea over here.
Ruby: Grand.
[giggles]
I would love to do the exchange program,
but I can't right now.
- How come?
- It's just, um...
a lot going on here right now.
And, uh...
[resonating]
Uh...
Sorry, uh, Finn.
I, I gotta go.
- Sure.
Next few weeks are gonna be a bit spotty.
Going on a trip to visit family.
- Sounds great!
Safe travels!
- Sl๏ฟฝn leat.
- [sighs]
[thunk]
[sighs]
- Thanks for the socks, Dad.
See ya.
?
[crows cawing]
- [panting]
[whooshing]
[mysterious music]
?
Man: I wish I wouldn't lo--
- What?
What, no.
Come on.
I...
Just please...
please get better.
Okay?
?
[theme music]
[theme music]
Half clues and a half wish?
There's something wrong.
- I don't know about you, but I'm getting nervous
about all the people poking around at the well.
There's Mrs. Rivers-Snyder,
and then all the lookie-loos
thanks to our realtor friend.
- The secret is so not safe.
Too many lurking lurkers who lurk.
- That has to be what's happening.
The well is shutting itself down
to protect itself.
It's called disenchantment.
- You already made your wish
that this whole thing would never end.
So, what now?
- [sighs] Now...
We grant the heck out of this wish
and hope that the next one is mine.
- Okay, so...
where do we start?
- Hmm...
Well, we all love books!
Sam: So we're supposed to read every book
with the word "art" in the title
looking for a wish?
Mina: Or a clue?
- Or a wisher!
Maybe the artist's name starts with a W?
- Who, then?
The Art of...
Walt Disney?
The Art of...
Warhol?
[chuckles]
The Art of War?
- The Art of War?
- Okay, not The Art of War.
- Advantageous!
Because The Art of War by Sun Tzu
is already checked out.
- [scoffs]
That's a thing?
I was joking.
- It is a thing.
In fact, it is a classic Chinese text
from the 5th century, B.C.
Written as strategic advice during wartime.
Mina: Wait, people still read it?
- Oh yeah, people use it as advice
for anything and everything.
Business, relationships, life.
Ruby: Well, do you have another copy?
- There are lots of editions.
I'm pretty sure we only have one.
And...
Uh, yep.
It's on loan.
[mysterious fluttering]
- Kevin, who checked this out?
- Uh, let's see.
Ah!
Our historian friend, Mrs. Rivers-Snyder.
- Fish teeth!
Mina: Hmm?
?
- Her kid, Jelani.
Big fan of sharks, remember?
- Well, that makes two clues out of three.
- Uh, should... should I place a hold, then?
Daniel: I never really thought
about what bees did in the winter.
- Well, it's the same as people, really.
They huddle together for warmth,
and eat too much,
and wait till spring.
[chuckling] And if they're lucky enough
to winter in a pal's orchard,
thanks again for that,
then they'll make apple blossom honey!
You know, with all the publicity
that your place is getting now,
I bet we'll sell a ton of it.
Daniel: Yeah...
Brea: Hey!
- Hmm?
- Where did my friend Daniel go?
- What do you mean?
Brea: Well, you just went all weird and distant again.
- Weird and distant?
Brea: Yeah.
You've been kinda doing it a lot lately.
So, what's the secret?
Spill.
I mean, maybe I can help.
- Nothing to spill.
- [sniffs]
Is that what everyone says
when they totally have something to spill?
- I mean, okay, yeah,
I guess I've been kinda distracted lately,
but it's not anything, um--
[cell phone ringing]
Sorry.
[cell phone ringing]
Hi, Makela.
Makela: [on phone] Dan.
Any chance you can meet me now?
Daniel: Meet now?
Um...
Makela: [on phone] It's important.
- Sure, yeah.
Okay, yeah, if it's important.
[drill whirring]
I'm about to be more distracted.
Sorry, I gotta run.
- Sure.
Makela: Curious, isn't it?
- Hard to say
until you tell me what I'm looking at.
- These pins mark strange phenomena in Emerald.
Uh, here, here, and here,
groundwater suddenly replenished.
Quite impossible.
And, in a drought,
the streams around the edge of your property
just suddenly sprang back to life.
- I'm sure there's some explanation.
Makela: There is not.
My hydrologist consultants couldn't explain it either.
But it's not just that.
Past few years, I've heard of near miracles,
um, here, here, and several around here.
- Not surprised.
We have great people.
Makela: Guess where the epicentre
of all this activity is?
Your orchard.
Any ideas?
- Not sure why I would.
- Is there any...
family history that you could share with me?
Papers, old family journals?
- I'd have to dig for that.
I'm just really busy right now.
We're getting ready for winter, so, yeah.
Busy, busy.
Busy, busy, busy!
- Look.
I became a historian because history matters.
Truth is important.
Even if it's difficult or...
makes us think differently about ourselves.
- I wanna help you, I really do.
I...
Now is just not a good time.
Makela: Hmm.
- I gotta go.
?
Sam: Hey Jelani, let's talk about fish.
Jelani: Let's do that!
Sam: So, what can you tell us about fish with sharp teeth?
Jelani: Depends.
What kind--
- What kind of teeth?
Ruby: Um, they were sharp.
Jelani: Okay, well, sharks have serrated teeth.
They cut and tear flesh.
- But if the teeth are pointy,
that's for predators who spear their prey.
Jelani: Megis, what'd I tell you
about interrupting?
Megis: I'm--
Jelani: She's--
Jelani and Megis: so competitive.
- Huh.
- But I know more about fish.
- No way!
I went to nature camp.
- Well, I've read every book in the library on it.
Jelani: Yeah, children's section?
Megis: So?
I'm getting a pet fish!
Plus I can say the longest fish name:
lauwiliwilinukunuku'oi'oi.
Plus, I have a barracuda sweatshirt.
[enchanting music]
?
So I win!
Again!
Seriously, this is getting boring.
- Uh, thanks for...
[chuckles]
?
That's the rest of my half fish!
Mina: There is no way
that little Megis is old enough
to read The Art of War.
Sam: No.
But I recognize that logo.
That's from the Barracudas.
The Ashton Hills football team.
- Football?
This is a football wish?
- Unless the wisher is football-adjacent.
A cheerleader, a mascot...
Ruby: Oh, there's so many potential wishers.
Sam: Well luckily,
football people and football-adjacent people
have one thing in common.
- Football?
- The Orchard Grill.
Best place to load up on carbs.
Check it out.
?
Mina: Look!
That guy, we know him.
Ruby: And he has a copy of The Art of War.
And a Barracuda jacket.
Time to talk.
- Hey!
Bakari, right?
Golf guy.
You on the 'Cudas too?
- Uh, yeah.
Hey, people.
Not quite.
New football assistant coach.
- Oh, sounds important.
Bakari: Yeah,
sounds a lot better than it is.
First one to arrive, last person to leave,
and the pay is net negative.
- So, The Art of War,
that works for sports too, right?
- Yeah, totally.
Got this from coach.
A lot of good points.
"The general who loses the battle
makes but few calculations beforehand."
Means without proper planning,
you lose.
- Ah.
And in your job, you wouldn't want to lose.
Bakari: No way.
Can't be late to practice either.
Coach says ten minutes early is ten minutes late.
See you around.
Sam: [chuckles]
- The Art of War...
- Barracudas...
- Assistant coach...
- They use stopwatches.
- That's three for three.
Wisher?
- Wisher.
- Wisher.
?
- Bakari Matheson.
Former star running back
for Ashton Hills football team.
- Matheson.
I know that name.
Mina: Yeah,
'cause his dad was a pro way back when.
- Syd Sr. Yeah, he's a legend.
Mina: And grandpa Peyton.
MVP 1969.
Ruby: And more.
All played pro.
- Oh yeah,
they're like football royalty around here.
- So, our wisher must have a lot to prove.
- Plus, the 'Cudas are like...
nine titles in a row?
Although, this year...
[keyboard clicking]
Ruby: Oh, football has so much math.
What's WP?
- Winning percentage.
.778, which is decent.
But look, we're on a three game skid.
One more loss
and they drop out of a playoff spot.
- Which means no chance at the championship.
- For the first time in a decade.
Coaching staff must be feeling the heat.
- Well, it's a big deal, which means...
- Bakari is in a "can't lose" situation.
That's gotta be what the wish is about.
"I wish I wouldn't lose."
- So we need to get inside the team operations
and figure out how we can help!
- Let's get this team winning again.
So for this project, we wanted to study a winner.
With your nine championships, you were the obvious choice.
Ruby: Yeah, and no coach even comes close
to your stats.
- I'd argue that point, but I'd lose.
Sam: [chuckles] So, we'd like to highlight the Barracudas
as an example of team success for our school's blog.
- Yeah, and maybe we can even stir up enough momentum
in Emerald to get our own team.
- The plan is for Ruby to shadow the coaching staff
and Sam to shadow the players.
- Mina gets it on tape.
Teamwork!
- Fine.
Just don't get in the way.
My house, my rules.
You got it, Red?
- Got it, Coach.
Sam: [chuckles]
Ruby: [chuckles]
[running footsteps]
- Sweet!
Man 1: So cool.
- Yo!
Best behavior!
We got visitors all day.
Offense, listen up!
I got some stuff to get into your noggins.
- Yes, Coach!
- Copy that, Coach!
Coach: I mean, it's stuff you know,
just some twists on some old chestnuts.
Okay.
A variation on the Flea Flicker.
We start with our standard handoff
to our running back,
who hands the ball off to our receiver on a reverse.
Our receiver laterals the ball back to our QB,
who throws the ball downfield.
Should confuse the daylights out of them.
All right, next.
The Bubble Screen Double Pass.
We start by faking a run to our running back,
and then we throw the Bubble Screen
to our receiver out wide.
But here's the twist:
we make sure that the Bubble Screen
is a reverse backwards pass to our receiver.
So, as soon as the defense tries to sack him,
our receiver throws the ball downfield
to the running back we just faked the handoff to.
Man 2: What?
Coach: Got it?
?
Well, get it, 'cause I got more coming.
So...
Bakari: Coach.
This is a lot.
And they're still trying to figure out
some of the other new stuff.
- Come on, kid.
None of this is new.
This is a ten-cent problem.
Only wanna hear the dollar ones.
Bakari: Yeah, I'm just saying,
it's new to them.
- I'm sick of losing.
We need to win.
And we don't win by coddling.
Tell them, Little Syd.
- Little Syd?
- After his dad?
Bakari: Who are we?
All: Barracudas!
Bakari: What are we gonna do about it?
All: Dominate!
Bakari: Let's hear about it!
All: Yeah!
[birds chirping]
Dan: [sighs]
Mekela: Hi!
Daniel: Hello again, Makela.
Makela: [giggles]
Daniel: Listen,
I really do appreciate the work that you do,
but I don't think that I-
- Say no more.
The time isn't right, the time isn't right.
I respect that.
But I did think you might need a little nudge.
[birds chirping]
Have a look, and then we'll talk again.
[chuckling]
[mysterious music]
[car door closes]
[car engine starts]
?
[upbeat music]
Bakari: Come on, boys, move it, move it!
Coach: 'Kay, let's go.
'Kay.
Okay, good catch, boy!
Yeah.
All right, let's go, move that thing!
Come on now, come on now.
Man 3: One more, one more, let's go!
Ruby: Hut!
Coach: Push it, push it!
- [chuckles]
Coach: Go, go, go, go, go.
- O'Reilly, nice work on those handoff drills.
Ruby: Thanks!
This is fun.
[laughing]
- Yeah, you got a knack for it.
I gotta get the boys ready for the new plays.
- Uh, yeah,
what the coach said back in the locker room,
was that English?
- Barely.
Guy's constantly coming up with new stuff.
You should see his playbook.
Dense and deadly.
- Gibson!
40-yard sprints!
Now!
Man 3: Keep going, keep going.
One more!
?
Let's go, boys, pick it up, pick it up!
[struggling grunts]
Let's go, let's go!
Coach: Yo, Gibson!
?
What have you done with Gibby?
And where'd this ten-toed sloth
come from?
I've seen funeral processions faster than you.
Pick it up or pack it up.
- You got it, Coach.
Man 3: Nice, that's a good one!
Man 4: Come on!
Coach: Bans!
?
Come here.
How many times do I have to tell you?
Feint left, not right.
I got you a tutor for math.
What, you want me to get one to tie your shoes, too?
- Sorry, Coach.
- Everybody!
Ten laps, all out!
And no walking,
or you're officially riding the pine!
Go!
Go!
Go!
?
Bakari: All right, just take it easy, Gibby,
all right?
If you don't rest, then you won't get stronger.
Coach: What's going on here?
Huh?
- Coach.
Can I talk to you about--
- My number one rule?
- Yeah, no coddling.
- Marko.
A word?
?
- Yes, Annalise?
Annalise: Sponsors are getting nervous.
They want to know you've got this
before they slap their logos on the new gear.
- I got this.
Annalise: They want to know
what you're doing different this time.
Because the same old, same old is not cutting it.
- Old dog's got new tricks.
Just gotta drill it into these knuckleheads.
Annalise: Yeah, well...
You better get serious about this, Coach.
Ruby: Who's that?
Bakari: VP Athletics.
Annalise Maracle.
The one person that Coach answers to.
To her, winning isn't everything.
It's the only thing.
- Right.
'Cause it's not like there's enough pressure
on you guys already as is.
- Good thing it's all sunshine and puppies
around here!
Bannerji: I'm so sick of Coach taking it out on me
because of you!
Gibson: It'd be nice
if you were where you're supposed to be for once!
- I'd had it if you weren't so slow!
- Dude, you can't even spell slow!
[shoving and shouting]
Bakari: Stop!
[uproarious shouting]
[thudding]
Enough!
Man 5: You okay, man?
Man 6: You okay?
Man 7: Help him up!
Man 8: Come on, now.
?
- Sorry about that, man.
Man 6: Are you good?
Man 9: [sighs]
No, that's not good.
- That was out of control.
- Anger much?
- Yeah,
team at each other's throats like this?
As if getting these guys to win this
wasn't gonna be hard enough.
- But now?
Even harder.
?
[sighs]
So, these shoving matches are a regular thing?
- Kind of.
Fight tough, win tough.
That's Coach's style.
- Intense.
Bakari: I mean,
it's how he was trained, so...
now it's how he trains.
He wins cups, so no one questions it.
Ruby: And your dad and grandpa
played under the same system?
Bakari: Thanks.
Yeah, but there's a different approach
than "shut up and play."
I've tried talking to Coach, but it's not easy.
I've got so much respect for the guy,
but he just doesn't get
that not all things can be fixed
by working harder or running more laps.
[grunts]
- Gibson's not slow.
He's playing through pain, right?
- Yeah.
- And Bannerji has directional dyslexia.
- How did you know that?
- Well, I saw him looking at his hands
the way my aunt does
to try to figure out left from right.
Ruby: See, you know these guys inside and out.
Why doesn't Coach use that?
- Yeah.
Coach only wants me here for my family name.
Not my "ten-cent" ideas.
- How are you meant to win
if he's stuck in his old ways?
- I'm working on it.
[mysterious music]
?
Ruby: This is 100 percent you.
How can this not be you?
- But that would make me, what, 197 years old.
- It's not out of the question,
Vampire Dad.
- Now you know why I only parent at night.
- [chuckling]
Ah, it's like...
eerie family resemblance.
- Grandpa O never mentioned any O'Reilly leaving for Asia
in any of his research.
- Well, maybe Grandma knows something?
- No, she said the first known instance
of the O'Reilly's leaving Ireland
was to come here.
Donnel and his clan.
- Reverse image search?
- Did it.
No hits, other than me.
And then I thought this might tell me something.
- So you looked it up?
- Mhm.
Characters translate to,
"obscure explosive device blames profit".
- [chuckling] And you can't just ask
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder because...?
- I'd owe her a favor.
- Mm.
- So, yeah.
Looks like I need a whole new strategy.
- Hmm, funny.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Okay, say the field is Bakari's wish,
and his goal is to win the next game.
If this O is Bakari...
- And the Xs are the obstacles
blocking him from his goal...
- Coach is one of them.
Sam: He's blocking team unity.
- So, in order to create conditions
for Bakari not to lose,
we dodge the obstacle.
- Yeah.
Coach has his ways of winning,
but so does Bakari.
- I see it now.
These four are covered.
Ruby: And Bakari just needs an opening.
?
- So, we give Bakari the chance
to talk to everybody and coach his way,
that way this team can win.
Ruby: Yeah.
Think you can keep Coach away long enough
for Bakari to do his thing?
- Oh, I can keep anybody talking.
These are all questions about how you got started.
[muffled through wall] People will love it.
Coach: [muffled through wall] You sure?
I, I don't want to sound thick-headed.
- Bakari!
Coach is having an interview with Mina.
Uh, they might take a while.
- But that's cool, right?
Gives you some extra time with the players.
- Yeah.
- This is your opening.
You can connect with them, get past the bad stuff.
- Yeah.
Get back on the winning track.
Barracudas!
Gather up!
This weekend, big away game.
We either clinch in enemy territory,
or we hang 'em up early.
And we're gonna clinch!
Football team: Yeah!
Bakari: I'm not good at speeches like Coach.
But we've got to come together.
As a team.
Like, no more fighting, y'all.
- [scoffs]
Tell that to Gibby.
Man 10: Yeah!
Bakari: Seriously.
We've all got hard stuff going on.
Stuff that we're not letting our teammates help us with.
We need to be brave enough
to build some real trust here.
- Tell that to Bannerji.
Bakari: Chill, okay?
Do you know why I'm here?
Why this means so much to me?
- Your pa.
Bakari: Yeah.
But not in the way that you think.
My dad was a great player.
- Yeah, no doubt.
Bakari: And you know what I was when he got mad?
The runt.
Called me soft for just being who I am.
He didn't want me to play.
I'd embarrass him.
Didn't even want me to have his name anymore.
So I picked my own name.
Bakari.
Means "hopeful" and "promising".
- That's you, B!
Bakari: It hurts, but... stuff hurts less
when you share it with your teammates.
And whatever your struggle is,
I get it.
And I've got your back.
Man 11: Yeah!
- And your teammates do too, right?
All: Yeah!
- Okay.
Who's got something?
[inspiring music]
?
I know, I know,
this is something we never do.
So, that's why we're doing it.
?
- I'll go.
Bakari: Respect.
Dig deep.
I did.
[thump]
- If only pictures could talk, huh?
- Yeah.
That would help.
[sighs]
[indistinct chatter]
You don't happen to be able to pronounce this,
do you?
- Oh, well...
There are seven to ten different Chinese dialects.
They're actually different languages.
The one unifying thing is the writing, so...
[chuckling]
Short answer is no.
- Yeah, thought so.
- But, thanks to machine learning
and advanced AI algorithms...
this can.
- Really?
Can we try it?
- Yeah, yeah.
Yeah.
[camera clicks]
[digital whirring]
- All right!
Success!
[chuckling]
Ready to hear what those, uh,
mysterious letters have to tell us?
- I am.
Automated voice: O'Reilly.
[eerie music]
- [inhales]
Amazing!
- Yeah.
- [whispering] Wow.
- One question answered.
[paper rustling]
But now I have a million more.
[clap]
[patting]
- This was nice.
Bannerji: That's what I'm talking about.
Yeah?
- We got you, man.
I mean it.
- Same.
For all of you.
Man 11: Yeah!
- This is a great start.
And there's so much more we can do.
Cut through it all.
Find ways to let yourself chill,
you know?
- What is going on here?
?
- [sighs]
Ruby: Uh, i-it was my idea.
I-I thought maybe Bakari could--
Coach: That's enough, Red!
[indistinct murmuring]
What do you think you're doing?
- I was just trying a different approach.
I thought that maybe--
Coach: Maybe nothing.
It's my program.
You know what I coddle?
Eggs.
Not players.
Was I not clear?
- Yes, Coach.
I just...
- Wrong answer!
You three.
Show's over.
Make like Tom and Cruise.
Out!
?
And you,
I'm not even gonna try to make this funny.
You're fired.
[tense music]
?
Mina: What should we do now?
Sam: Like the book says.
Be like water.
- You mean, as in everything is going down the drain?
- [laughs]
No, not at all.
Says here the way to win is by changing shape
and adapting to environment.
Like water flows around stones in a river.
- Okay.
So, how do we adapt?
- Bakari's wish must be about not losing
the upcoming game.
If the team wins, he gets his wish.
- Not really.
How can he win
if he's not on the team anymore?
- Well, obviously,
we have to get him his job back.
Sam: "Be like water in pounding wave form."
- How do we do that?
Should we start with Coach?
- We can try.
No choice.
But I bet he'll say...
[thwack]
- No.
- But this whole misunderstanding
was our fault.
We're the ones who got in the way
of you and your team.
- Plus, Bakari's style works.
- And he loves this team.
- Then he shouldn't have gone behind my back.
- So you're really not gonna give him a second chance?
- Why?
So he can betray me twice?
- You must've hired him for a reason.
- Yeah.
Because of his last name.
But I've learned that lesson.
Look...
My job is on the line here.
My legacy.
So that kid will have nothing to do with the team
as long as I'm head coach.
?
- Okay, well... that didn't work.
So, time to step it up a notch.
- Second down, ten to go.
Ruby: [sighs]
See, Bakari Matheson works hard
as an assistant coach.
He, he puts in the hours, he connects, and he cares.
And he has a method that actually works.
Just look.
Bakari: [through phone] This is a great start.
And there is so much more we can do.
Cut through it all.
Find ways to let yourself chill,
you know?
- I hear you.
- Plus--
Uh, wait, what?
Oh, I was not expecting that.
- You're not the only one who thinks it.
But it's nice to have proof.
Send this to me.
Man 12: [on phone] Hello?
- Shawn?
Shawn: Yeah?
Track down Coach Collins for me, will you?
Thanks.
Mina: She said that?
Ruby: She said that!
- So maybe Bakari gets another chance to win.
Coach: My program, my rules.
Annalise: Actually, my department, my rules.
And I have to think about the sponsors,
Coach Collins.
No sponsors, no gear.
No gear, no team.
No team, no jobs.
- So Little Syd went behind my back.
He just wanted my job.
Annalise: What's important
is that your program is not working.
It's out of touch, outdated,
and one PR move away from self-imploding.
- Please!
Annalise: Marko.
You're about to retire.
You're stressed.
Take a breather.
Come back once you've got a new perspective
on your swan song.
- I don't need a new perspective.
I haven't missed a game in 20 years,
and I won't be benched by a suit.
Annalise: I insist.
And I'm sorry to say this, but if you don't--
Coach: Are you threatening me?
After a decade of wins?
Are you actually threatening me?
- Not anymore.
I'm firing you.
?
- I lost to Little Syd.
Unbelievable.
I guess I won't need this anymore.
[thunk]
- The stopwatch.
[enchanting music]
Oh, no.
Mina: Stopwatch?
Is it the one from your vision?
- But it's Coach's, not Bakari's.
- Yeah.
I'm starting to get a sinking feeling
about all this.
I gotta go talk to the well.
[retreating footsteps]
Hey, so um,
I know you're feeling a bit under the weather,
but I was wondering
if I could ask for some clarification
on something.
[chuckles nervously]
[whooshing]
Coach: I wish I wouldn't lose.
?
- But...
Wait, that was...
Coach Collins.
Sam: We were wrong about Coach Collins.
Annalise: Doesn't matter.
You were right about the new guy.
That's what counts.
Ruby: Bakari is great for the team,
but so is Coach Collins.
There's a lot he doesn't get recognition for.
- Yeah, like how he takes the time
to mentor his assistant coaches
and have breakfast with them once a week.
Ruby: And he pays for some of the players' tutors
out of pocket.
A bad GPA means no game time.
- He sets the bar high to build character.
Would you reconsider putting him back in play?
- Look.
I know that Coach is a good guy
underneath all the insensitive gruff and...
volume.
But this is above all our pay grades.
He's not winning.
So he's out.
?
Coach: You got nerve, I'll give you that.
Bakari: Believe me,
I didn't want you to go out this way.
Coach: Oh, yeah?
So you thought betraying me would make me smile?
Bakari: I didn't betray you.
I would never.
After my dad threw me out and you helped me,
I'm grateful to you.
Coach: Funny way of showing it.
- Would you just actually listen
to what I'm saying?
I knew that admin was breathing down your neck.
I saw that it was stressing you out.
I was trying to be a team player
and save your rep.
Make sure that you won, in spite of yourself.
- In spite of myself?
- [sighs]
Coach, I get it.
You win your whole life, everyone loves you.
And suddenly, you hit this slump
and people lose faith.
So you're doing your favorite play:
doubling down.
Coach: First of all,
I don't need your understanding.
Second...
all I ever asked for was your loyalty.
Third... we're done.
?
[watch beeping]
[breathing rapidly]
?
- That's not candy.
- Antacids, for heartburn.
- Our vice-principal ate those like crazy.
- Yeah.
He had indigestion.
This could be something else.
Man 13: Gastroesophageal reflux disease,
peptic ulcers, even gallstones.
- So the coach could have all kinds of things.
Man 13: Well, if his blood pressure alarm
went off,
given the stress that he's been under,
it's his heart.
If those symptoms are angina,
it means he has coronary artery disease.
He's at risk for a heart attack.
He needs to come see me sooner rather than later.
And I mean, right away.
- Okay.
Thank you, doc.
- Okay, Sam.
- So this wish isn't about losing a big game.
- It's about losing a lot more than that.
?
[upbeat ambient music]
?
[indistinct chatter]
Hi.
- Ugh...
- Look, I know you probably don't want to talk to me
ever again, or... see me.
- Well, yeah.
But that ship has sailed, hasn't it?
?
- I, uh...
I, um...
Coach: This a ten-cent problem, Red?
- No, Coach.
Definitely a dollar one.
I wanted to give you this.
?
- Cardiology department.
[scoffs]
I don't have time for this.
- You didn't have time for this.
Coach: Oh, what,
I have all kinds of time now that I'm fired?
?
You know something I don't know?
- Or maybe something you do know.
?
Doctor: So, you think you're tough?
What are you, Patrick Mahomes?
Gotta play through the pain?
Coach: [chuckles]
You're starting to sound like me.
- Well, this is stuff we could've caught years ago.
But you've been putting your job
ahead of your health.
Valiant?
Heroic?
Sure.
But you're no use to anyone if you're six feet under.
Coach: Is it really that serious?
Doctor: According to your ECG, yeah.
If you got a hot date tonight,
cancel it.
We're gonna do more tests.
You're going to the cardiac lab now.
[soft music]
?
[birds calling]
Daniel: [grunts]
- And another thing!
- There was a first thing?
- Sorry.
Sometimes I talk to myself in my head for a bit
and then, whoops.
Just comes out of my mouth mid-me.
- Sounds like it was a spirited debate.
- Yeah, it was.
[sighs]
Okay, Dan, here's the thing.
I can accept that you're all "I'm a mystery man.
Try to figure me out."
It's actually pretty fun.
But then...
[grunting] when there's no eventual explanation,
makes me feel a bit small.
And because I'm your friend...
I kinda feel like I deserve one.
[birds chirping, wind blowing]
- [sighs] Okay.
So what if I explain to you
that I'm stewing over a family matter
and I'd like to discuss it with you, but I can't.
Yet.
Brea: Then I would say...
thank you for that honest answer.
Oh, Dan.
I really don't wanna be a demanding friend.
[sighs]
It's just that I've been burned before,
and I truly believe
that if we're not gonna be honest and real, then...
what's the point, right?
Time is so precious, and I don't wanna waste it.
- Yeah.
You're right.
You have a deal.
- Okay.
Daniel: [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
[indistinct intercom announcement]
[indistinct conversation]
[phone ringing]
- You stalking me, Red?
- Maybe a little bit.
You followed up.
- Yeah.
Bunch of tests to do.
And if it turns out as the doctor thinks,
then, um...
They're going in.
[indistinct intercom announcement]
Thanks, Red.
You might've saved my life.
- You know your team loves you, right?
- [scoffs]
- Even Bakari.
- I knew his dad.
He was a big tough son-of-a-gun.
But he put Little Syd through the ringer.
Got ugly.
That's one of the reasons I took him in.
It was going so great.
Until, well, you know...
- I know you're not gonna believe me,
but what happened wasn't Bakari's fault.
When his dad rejected him, and you did too,
it almost broke him.
- No.
Look, I didn't mean to--
Ruby: But he is still out there
working towards the win.
Your win.
His dad said that he was soft,
and maybe he is and that's okay.
You showed him that.
He's as tough as they come.
Partly thanks to you.
Both: [laughing]
- Good luck.
With everything.
I hope you score one under the W.
Both: [chuckling]
Coach: Hey, Red!
[soft music]
?
Give this to him.
There's some new stuff in here,
and it might be useful.
And tell Little Syd...
Bakari...
he's got this.
- He does.
And so do you.
?
Daniel: You need to tell me why you gave this to me.
- Got you hooked, huh?
Daniel: Yeah.
- [chuckling]
Daniel: But there is nothing to find on this guy.
- Oh, wouldn't say nothing.
A colleague places it around the mid 1800s.
Possibly the Guangzhou Province,
which was open to foreign trade at the time.
- Well, that's something to go on.
- Hmm, I thought so too.
In one version, first-name-unknown O'Reilly
was an adventurer cartographer.
In another,
he was a derring-do missionary.
But it's all hearsay.
There's nothing certain anywhere about this man.
- Oh.
- Look, Dan.
I'm a historian and a writer, but I'm also a teacher.
And this here is the lesson.
- The lesson?
Makela: This is what happens when people keep secrets.
Unless history records a life,
it's like it never existed.
Whatever truths that this O'Reilly had,
truths that could help you in your life now,
they died with him, just gone forever.
Do you want that for your family?
?
- Look.
- Mhm?
?
- I would love to tell you what you wanna know.
Makela: Mhm?
?
- But I can't.
- You can't tell me anything?
- Nothing that I can be honest or real about.
?
- [clicks tongue]
So that's the end of it.
?
[bell chimes]
Bakari: [sighs]
?
- Hey, Bakari.
- Hey, Ruby.
- How you doin'?
- Okay.
Just tryna figure out some plays.
- You seem a little stressed.
- It's a lot.
Ruby: Hmm.
Yeah.
Uh, someone wanted me to give you something
that might help, though.
[chuckles]
He really believes in you.
- Thank you, Ruby.
?
- You'll be great.
Bakari: All right, guys.
Before we get on that bus, listen up.
Trust your training.
Trust each other and execute.
Man 13: That's right, B.
- But most important, don't do this for me.
Do it for the Barracudas.
All: Yeah, 'Cudas!
Man 14: 100 percent, yeah!
[tap]
- Do it for this guy.
Team: [agreeing]
Bakari: Coach was tough.
Maybe too tough.
But he taught us perseverance.
Team: [agreeing]
- To fight for what we believe in.
Gibson: Yes, sir.
- And to never give up.
Gibson: Uh-huh!
- So today, we embody that spirit.
Today, we play for Coach.
Team: [agreeing]
We play with intensity.
Gibson: Yes, sir!
- We play with fire.
Gibson: Yes, sir!
- And we play with heart.
[beeping]
[epic music]
?
[oxygen hissing]
?
?
[machine beeping steadily]
[knocking]
- Hey, Red.
- Hi, Coach.
Coach: Hey.
- How are you feeling?
- [weakly] They cut a hole in me last week.
They sawed apart my breastbone
and wired it back together.
I have a bruise the size and color of an eggplant.
Both: [chuckling]
- And I'm so...
so happy...
to be alive.
- You're not the only one.
Bakari: Like the book says...
"Opportunities are multiplied as they are seized."
[machine beeping steadily]
- You were listening.
- Shocking, but yeah, true.
Coach: [sighs]
So?
- Sorry, what are you...
Oh, I almost forgot!
The game!
- Oh, right!
Why don't you ask them yourself?
- Wait, they're here?
Ruby: [chuckles]
Bannerji: Yo, Coach!
Gibson: Now we get to yell and tough love you!
Coach: Okay, yeah, okay.
Enough with the squishy stuff.
Spill.
The game!
Bakari: The what?
Coach: Oh, come on now!
They got me in a cone of silence in here!
What happened?
Okay, who won?
- Ohhhh, I--
He meant the game!
Bannerji and Gibson: Oh, he meant the game!
Bakari: What happened?
Bannerji: Must've slipped my mind.
- Uh, hmm... let me think.
Didn't we smoke them and clinch the playoffs?
Bakari: Oh, right,
I think it's all coming back to me now.
[joyful screaming]
[laughter]
- You did it?
Gibson: We did it, Coach!
- And when we win the Collins Cup, you win too.
Coach: The what-now Cup?
Bakari: The Collins Cup.
That's what we're calling it anyway.
Coach: Oh well, you better not lose, then.
Ruby: [chuckles]
Doctor: Hey, hey, hey.
Okay.
Everybody out.
Coach needs to do his drills.
Forty reps of deep breathing, calm thoughts, rest.
Coach: Yeah, just one minute.
Come here.
[whispering] So, who are we?
All: [whispering] Barracudas!
- [whispering] What are we gonna do?
All: [whispering] Dominate!
- [whispering] Let's hear about it!
[whispering cheers]
Coach: [coughing]
[growls]
Ruby: Looking around, there are no losers here.
Only winners.
- Thank you, Red.
Ruby: Winners not just at a game,
but also at life.
?
Coach: Bakari.
Top drawer.
?
Mhm.
?
[drawer sliding open]
?
It's yours now, kid.
- [shuddering breath]
- Now come on, sit down.
Ruby: Amazing things can happen
when we choose to meet a threat
not with anger, but with acceptance.
With the will to understand our own humanity.
So we can find it in others and hold them dear.
But... is this it?
The last time I get to feel this wish-granting joy?
Sun Tzu said,
"Victory comes from finding opportunities
in problems."
We've all got problems.
Now, to turn them around.
