Pete: I wish I had another chance.
Mina: Okay, you two talk.
Bye!
- What was that?
[scoffs]
- I think we've been set up.
- Did you, uh, wanna catch up maybe?
Go grab a shake?
Tessa: I wish that we could have...
I don't know, another chance.
Pete: You did?
Wow, that's funny because I, uh, I totally--
Tessa: No way.
- [chuckling] Yeah.
- What's wrong?
Ruby: [grunts]
No more talking about the "you know what"
in public.
Like, not one word.
Mina: What was in the video?
Uh, what were you talking about
when you showed her the well?
Ruby: Oh, nothing.
Uh, just how magic wells work
and what makes them secret and special,
and I can't believe
someone filmed the whole thing!
- Well, that worked out.
- I know!
Good thing we don't have to worry about revealing
a clue-giving, wish-granting magic well
in my backyard.
- Yeah, and our secret stays secret.
Ruby: [laughs]
We're good!
[suspenseful music]
?
You tell the best stories.
So, how do you know all this stuff about wells?
Finn: Lore.
We have so much lore here.
- [laughs]
Finn: Lore to spare!
Take some of our lore, please!
- [laughs]
But, seriously.
Finn: Seriously.
I'm really glad you're into this stuff.
I've got literally no one to talk to about it here.
The other day,
I, I cornered this poor fella on the bus
and blabbled on until I think he got off
before his actual stop.
Ruby: [laughs]
Finn: Beside a field, in the middle of nowhere.
He chose to walk a mile in the rain
over my nonstop well chat.
- [snickers]
Finn: Nobody gets it.
Just blank stares
and, "Why don't you do somethin' useful?"
- Why don't you do something useful?
Finn: Because I'm busy interviewing pensioners,
aren't I?
Trying to find a real-life magic well.
Yesterday, it was Dorcas Lyster.
Her family lore says their well was disenchanted
in the '40s.
- Disenchanted?
Finn: Went on the fritz.
Got more and more vague and confusin'.
It had always been cryptic, so the story goes.
But if you really put your grey matter to it,
you can figure out the well's meanin'.
But somewhere along the way, it soured.
Garbled messages, jumbled visions,
in-incomplete wishes.
It's like the well's magic got so messed up
that its keeper just couldn't understand it anymore.
- Oh.
- Right?
Just imagine you had a magic well that gave you purpose
[chuckling] so you could actually grant wishes.
Then it got exposed
and slowly went bonkers on ya.
Tragic.
- Yeah, tragic.
- [sighs]
- So, what else is, uh, going on?
Finn: What else?
Besides the lore, the workin',
and talkin' to you at all hours.
- [laughs]
Finn: Lessee...
I made you something.
[click]
[Irish folk music]
- [laughs]
?
[laughing] That's so stupid!
?
I, I love it.
[snorts]
Finn: I thought you might be missing us
over here.
- I am.
I miss Ireland so much.
- Oh, yeah?
What else?
- Uh, and the colcannon.
So tasty.
[chuckles]
Finn: Okay.
Anything else?
- And, well, the Irish people,
of course.
- [chuckles]
- [hesitating] And your Irish person.
[gentle music]
?
- I miss you, too.
- [laughs nervously]
- 'Kay.
Gotta be useless some more.
Night to you.
- Night.
?
[sighs]
[well chiming]
[groans]
[sighing] I'm not complaining, Well,
but you could use a magic snooze button.
[grunts]
[yawns]
[mystical music]
?
[dripping]
?
Pete: Shnay ser thunda dye hatsu we-ah.
Ruby: [gasps]
[breathing heavily]
Is that it?
[slowly] I guess it is.
[theme music]
?
Amanda: Okay, Brian,
remember to bring the posters for me.
Daniel: Amanda!
- Daniel!
[sighs]
Let me guess.
You're ready to sell
that beautiful, awful, age-old family pile of yours,
am I right?
- Nooo.
Actually, I'm here to share with you
a tart, tasty, age-old family recipe.
- Oh.
Daniel: It's just a small thanks
for all the time that you took
with me and Mrs. Martin.
I know that I put Brian through the wringer.
- Well, luckily, he's used to it.
It's not easy working for the Wolf.
Still, much appreciated.
Thank you.
Daniel: "Emerald, where the magic begins."
Interesting.
- Ah.
Isn't it?
I thought I'd lure people in with a little magic.
- Where did you get that idea?
- Oh, it's actually something, uh,
Brian overheard your Ruby say.
- Ruby?
- Yeah, when you put me on hold
the other day.
Got us thinking,
our business is all about wish fulfillment, right?
And what better slogan than an honest one?
- Emerald is magic.
- Right.
Amanda: And wishes do come true here.
I can pitch that with passion.
- Is that a fact?
- Speaking of all of this, Brian,
why don't you head on over to Dan's
and take a couple of snaps?
Brian: I could do that.
- I-it really is the perfect look
for all of this.
I mean, the apples on the trees,
the view from the south side, you know,
that kinda thing.
Brian: Got it.
- D'ya--
Daniel: Yeah, um...
- All right.
Daniel: See, don't get me wrong,
I'm, I'm flattered, but I--
- Ah!
Favor for a favor.
Daniel: Mmm.
Amanda: We did spend an awful lot of time with you
and that picky, picky woman.
You can't really say no, Dan.
- Right.
Um...
Yeah, except, actually, we're-- I just--
I almost forgot.
We're, we're doing some work down there.
- Oh.
Daniel: So, there are some areas
that are strictly off-limits.
So, um, if you see any caution tape--
- Ah.
- --do not cross.
Amanda: Mm-hm.
- For, for your, uh, for your safety.
- Safety.
Right.
But thanks.
Gonna make your place famous!
- [laughing awkwardly] Okay.
- Promise you that!
- [forced] Super.
- The hand mirror clue?
Again?
- That's what, four times now?
- Yeah, and that's not the only repeat.
The video of me and Hannah at the well
made a reappearance, too.
- Great, well, that's not ominous at all.
Ruby: [sighs]
- And the wish?
Ruby: It was a bunch of babble.
- What do you mean?
Ruby: Like, it, it, it was all nonsense.
It wasn't even words.
- Is the well okay?
I'm worried.
- Yeah, me too.
But we still have a wish, so?
- Right.
What did the gibberish sound like?
- [voice wavering] Shnay ser thunda dye hatsu we-ah.
- O-okay.
Sam, you're into languages,
does that sound like anything you're learning?
- Not even close.
- [sighs]
- Wait!
I have a secret weapon.
The boss of languages.
He knows them all.
- Sorry, I don't know that one.
In my learned and studied opinion,
it's gibberish.
- As in from the proud nation of Gibber?
- [chuckles]
Not quite.
But if it is a language, and I have my doubts,
there are ways to figure out what it is.
- Like?
- Look for certain things.
Phonetic features, rhythm and intonation,
common words and phrases.
Give it to me one more time.
- Shnay ser thunda dye hatsu we-ah.
- Oh, wow.
Okay.
I wish...
I wish I could help you.
But I have no clue.
Sounds like baby talk to me.
[apple crunches]
- Baby talk!
- At least that's something.
- And this time, I know an expert.
?
- Seb!
- Shhhh.
- Sorry, we needed to talk to you.
- Okay, quietly.
The second I stop moving, he starts crying again.
I nicknamed him Wayling.
- [chuckles awkwardly]
Uh, sorry, we, uh, need a baby's help
with something.
Seb: You're gonna need to move.
Y-you don't understand.
It's so loud,
it's like a knife in your ear.
[baby crying]
- [gasps]
- Ugh.
- [sighs]
Happy?
- Oh, um....
[baby crying]
- Uh, thanks, Seb, you can go.
- Oh, I can, can I?
- [chuckles awkwardly]
[baby squeals]
- [laughs]
Ruby: [laughs]
- All right, your kid's got a good arm.
Could be a quarterback one day,
or a pitcher, or a catapult.
- A catapult.
- Okay, not a catapult.
Mina: Thanks, Seb.
Sorry we woke the baby.
- The things I do for you and your hobby.
- But I'm so worth it, right?
- You have your charms.
- See you later?
- Yeah, after act three of the baby opera.
Ruby: Not a language.
- Not a baby.
- Uh, and the cry was way off.
So much for our experts.
- Shnay ser thunda dye hatsu we-ah.
It almost sounds like actual words,
but it's not.
- Yeah, it's almost like
we have this whole thing backwards.
- Shnay ser thunda dye hatsu we-ah.
- Sam, we know.
- Just had to record it, hang on.
- What are you doing?
- Well, maybe we did have it backwards.
Literally.
- Meaning?
- Meaning, thanks to backwardsaudio.com...
[on phone recording] I wish I had another chance.
[chuckles]
- Play it again.
Sam: [on phone recording] I wish I had another chance.
- A wish, but it's familiar.
I think we've done this one before.
Mina: "I wish I had another chance"?
- We did!
It's Pete's wish from two years ago!
- Pete?
As my Aunt Tessa's boyfriend?
Ruby: Yeah, we got them together,
remember?
[laughs]
- Only now, we have the wish again.
Ruby: And we have our wisher.
Only, why is the wish backwards?
Mina: Khaleh Tessa, how long have you been here?
- Ah, long enough
to see you out there with Seb.
- [chuckles]
Tessa: You two are awfully cute together.
He treatin' you right?
Mina: He's like...
Okay, you know how macaron has its thin, crusty layer
on the outside,
but it's like crazy sweet on the inside?
Tessa: Hmm.
- That's Seb.
Tessa: Yeah, I get that.
And it's making me hungry.
Both: [chuckle]
Pete: Well, then,
it's a good thing I brought treats, hm?
- [laughing]
Hi!
- Hi.
- Come here.
Pete: Mm.
?
- Nope, not yet.
- Oh, okay.
- [laughs]
- One more.
Mina: One more.
Pete: One more.
Tessa: One more.
[laughing]
Thank you.
Pete: Of course.
- Uh, can you put these away?
- Yes.
- I wanna make sure I don't ruin my appetite
before our big dinner date night tonight.
- [sighs]
You know, actually,
I have some bad news about that.
I gotta bail.
- No.
Peter: I know, I'm sorry.
I can meet up with you after.
There's just this thing I gotta do.
I'm sorry.
Tessa: Okay.
My sister's probably got three dinners' worth
of food waiting.
- More like three armies' worth.
Tessa: Ha!
Yeah.
Definitely later, though, right?
- Yes.
- Not like last time.
- You ever gonna let me live that down?
Tessa: Hmm.
No, I am not.
[laughs]
See you later.
[laughs]
Mina: Everything okay?
- Yeah.
As long as he shows up.
[laughs]
- [laughs timidly]
- Okay, so, we have our wish now.
Pete wants to unwind the original wish
that he can have another chance
with Mina's Aunt Tessa.
Ruby: Oh, but it was such a good wish.
I mean, they were crazy about each other,
and they didn't know it.
We made that happen.
[sighs]
And there's never been a wish reversal before.
Sam: So logically,
if he wants to reverse his wish,
to grant it...
- We need to break them up.
- What?
No!
No way, this is my Aunt Tess.
No way.
- Why?
Is everything roses and rainbows
in Pete and Tessa land?
- Yes.
Look.
?
Matching necklaces for their anniversary.
Romantic picnics.
They even baked a birthday cake together
for my mom's birthday.
And they still take photobooth pics together.
See?
- Yeah, I'm noticing a theme.
What's with the hot air balloons?
- Oh, Khaleh Tessa says
it's because their love soars.
Isn't that so sweet?
- Cue the toothache.
- So you're sure there's no problems
between them?
- My mom says they've got--
Sam: Mm.
Mina: --some problems,
but that doesn't mean
they don't still love each other.
- Are you sure?
I mean, from the sound of it, you know,
Pete's heart just isn't in it.
- And hey, you know, if it's gonna end anyway,
better deal with it sooner than later, right?
- Uh... uh...
Okay, we can explore this,
but no rash decisions here, okay?
This is my family.
- Okay.
Let's get close,
figure out what the problems are
before we break them up.
- We're not breaking them up!
- Okay, Mina,
obviously, you've got your in with Tessa.
What about Pete?
- I need credits for career tech ed.
I can score some hours at Pete's garage.
- Okay, sounds good.
- No, it doesn't.
- Agreed, but let's try anyways?
?
[sighs]
?
That's what her poster said?
"Emerald, where the magic begins"?
- It is kinda catchy.
Ruby: Sure, one part catchy but ten parts terrifying.
So, not only did Amanda Wilczek,
local empire builder, hear about the well,
but she wants the whole world to hear about it, too?
- She does think big.
- Okay, well, this is bigger.
Dad, we can't let this happen.
I mean, we can't risk disenchantment.
- Disenchantment?
Ruby: When the well gets all mixed up
and useless.
Finn says it's yet another terrible thing
that can happen when they get threatened.
- Well, it's gonna be tough to hold Amanda off.
And if we protest too much, it'll just backfire,
and she'll be intrigued even more.
Ruby: So, what do we do?
Uh, snake pits, booby traps?
Her photographer mysteriously disappears.
- Tempting, but no.
I told her there were some off-limit areas,
so I'm gonna run a bunch of caution tape
all around the well.
And just in case,
I'll throw a bunch of construction junk
and a bunch of old tools, too.
- It's not a pretty picture?
- Exactly.
She wants beauty shots,
so let's make any photo unusable.
- Thanks for running interference, Dad.
I just sure hope it works.
- Yeah.
[music playing on radio]
Pete: Okay, take this.
Make sure the gasket's in place.
- Yeah.
- And give it a spin.
- Okay.
- There you go.
You got this.
[phone ringing]
Hello?
- [sighs]
Hey, Pete?
Good to go, can you hand me the wrench?
Pete: Yeah, yeah, here.
Sam: [sighs]
Thanks.
Pete: [on the phone] Okay, well, did you get my text?
- [sighs]
Pete: Yeah, I mean, no, it's fine.
I can just...
just figure something else out.
- Oh, uh, sorry, Pete.
I need the 13-mil.
Pete: Right.
- Thanks.
Pete: Yeah, this is a...
It's not a good time.
I'm kinda at work right now.
- Hey.
13-mil wrench.
- Sorry, Sam.
- Yeah, is, uh, is everything okay?
- Yeah, it's fine.
No, she's not here right now.
Sure, I can meet you.
Not, not while she's in town.
It's too risky.
Mina: Hey, Khaleh Tessa, what are you looking for?
- Computer plug!
Ugh!
I-I left mine at school,
and if I don't find one, I can't hand in my essay!
Mina: Well, we have more over here.
Can't you get an extension?
Mina: [laughs]
It's law school, Mina, it's not high school.
There's no excuse for missing a deadline, okay?
Mina: Oh.
Tessa: Definitely not in this class.
I mean, this prof?
I got a meditation app because of this prof.
Mina: Must be so hard to be stressed out like this
while you're visiting home, visiting Pete.
[phone ringing]
- Yeah.
Oh, speaking of.
Hi.
Pete [over phone]: Tessa?
- Yes!
Pete: You okay?
- I'm a disaster!
I left my computer cord behind.
Pete: Really?
- Yeah.
In a half hour, I'm going to lose it!
Pete: No, no, you're not.
'Kay, we've got this.
Take a breath.
- Yeah.
Pete: We'll figure it out together.
- Yeah...
[laughs humorlessly]
I knew you were gonna say that.
Pete: Nothing can stop us.
Tessa: Mm-hm.
Pete: Right?
Tessa: You're right.
Pete: I have a friend with the same computer, so.
- You do?
Pete: Yeah, I'll text him now.
- [sighing] Oh, you will?
Pete: Better?
- Yes, yeah, thanks, love.
See you soon.
I don't know what I would do without him,
he is such a rock.
- So everything's okay?
- Yeah.
He always brings me around to what's important.
And he's got a friend with the same cord.
So, it is gonna be okay.
- Okay.
Well, if it wasn't Aunt Tessa on the screen, who was it?
Sam: I don't know.
Some other woman.
- You've gotta be kidding me.
Ruby: Okay, what's up with her?
Mina: Tell her.
- We were comparing notes from our little surveillance,
and apparently there were some inconsistencies.
- Tell her!
- Well, it's nothing.
It's no smoking gun.
- Sam!
- Okay.
This afternoon,
I kind of accidentally, on purpose,
left my phone at the garage.
- Why?
- Just a hunch.
Pete was distracted at work, I wanted to follow up on it.
[sneaky music]
?
Pete was still there, which was weird.
He was supposed to have the afternoon off.
I went in to say hello.
Hey, Pete.
Pete: Sam, uh...
- What are you doin'?
- Um, nothing.
Just ordering parts.
- Aren't you supposed to have the afternoon off?
Pete: Look, now's, now's not the best time, Sam, okay?
- Oh, well, I--
Pete: I'll, I'll see you later.
- W-wha--
Except, I'm pretty sure
that wasn't an order page I saw.
Mina: This can't be right, can it?
I mean, I heard them talking on the phone
and they sounded super solid.
Even after he bailed on her.
- He bailed on her?
- But I bail on Seb all the time, right?
And the unexplained expenses
my mom mentioned Aunt Tessa was worried about
can probably be accounted for, too.
- Unexplained expenses?
Sam: Okay, look, all I know is Pete's a good guy, okay,
so don't go jumping to conclusions.
- We won't.
- Too late.
Sam: Well, good,
because I mean it when I say--
Mina and Ruby: He's cheating.
- Here we go.
- It's hard to imagine, Sam, our lovable Pete,
but no wonder he wants to unwind the wish.
- We have to do something.
- Okay, no, let's slow down here.
Mina, didn't you say no rash decisions,
this is my family?
Mina: Yes, and now it's clearly time
for "yes rash decisions, this is my family."
- Okay, we need a plan.
- First thing tomorrow, I'll go back there.
I'll try and get him to say what he's actually thinking
rather than us trying to guess.
Ruby: [sighs]
- Maybe we're wrong.
- Maybe we're not.
?
[metal clanging]
Pete: [sighs]
Wow, it just barely missed my feet.
- Here, let me help.
[exhales]
- Thanks.
- You okay?
You seem, uh...
stressed out.
You nervous about something, or...?
- Uh, no, no, I-I'm, I'm fine, really.
- Really?
- Yeah.
Look, I'm, I'm sorry.
I know I've been acting kinda weird lately.
Sam: Well, no, I mean,
aside from puttin' that gear assembly
in the fridge, you've been great.
- [chuckles]
Yeah...
- Come on, you can tell me.
It's okay.
- Nah, I can't.
I mean, you're how old? 16?
What do you know about life and, you know?
Sam: Open mind and a pure heart.
Try me.
- Okay, listen, I'll tell you,
but you have to swear
you won't breathe a word of this to anyone.
I mean it.
- Of course.
- [under breath] Okay.
Okay, 'cause honestly,
I do kinda need to get this off my chest.
This secret has been killing me.
- Well, it's safe with me.
- Okay, good.
- The thing is,
I-I get jittery just thinkin' about it.
- Yeah, picked up on that.
Pete: It's because
it's just a really big decision,
you know?
But I think it's the right one.
I'm gonna propose to Tessa.
- Oh.
- Yeah!
- Wow, really?
Pete: Really.
Wow, that feels crazy saying out loud.
- Yeah!
Well, uh, congrats.
- Thank you, thank you.
?
Ruby: What did he say?
- That's what he told me this morning.
- Okay, you're gonna have to explain
because I'm a little...
[groans]
- If Pete wants to undo his previous wish,
then why, why, why, why?!
- You got me.
I'm just the messenger here.
Mina: I hate to say it, but I mean,
it does kind of in a way make sense.
- Ugh.
Mm.
- Not again.
- 'Kay, look,
I hate that we're thinking this way,
but it doesn't make Pete look good.
Mina: Exactly.
Why would he wanna propose
when the wish is telling us it's not in his heart?
- I'll bite.
Why?
- Money!
- What?
- Maybe the garage isn't doing so well,
and Aunt Tessa's gonna become a lawyer,
and she's gonna be making a lot of money.
- Come on.
Ruby: It makes sense.
- It does.
- Okay, look.
Yeah, it looks bad.
Maybe there are some things going on
that we don't know about yet.
Or maybe this is all just because
he's secretly planning the wedding.
- Ha!
Not a chance.
- No.
Sam: Why not?
- You do not plan the wedding
without the bride's involvement.
- [sighs]
Ruby: Face it, Sam.
Your pal is looking like a--
- Cheating cheater who cheats.
I'm facing it.
I just don't like it.
?
- [sighs]
[slam]
[bird cawing]
Daniel: So what's your theory now?
Ruby: The only thing I have figured out
is that Pete didn't make this wish consciously.
Deep down,
he thinks marrying Tessa is a bad idea,
whether he said it out loud or not.
- Okay.
But if Pete's not listening to his own subconscious,
why would he listen to you?
- Yeah.
But there are two equal partners
to this wish.
To unwind it, I could go through Tessa.
Daniel: Hmm.
?
- What?
Daniel: Nothing, it's just...
Pete's my buddy.
We talk a lot.
And he's pretty clued in emotionally.
He really helped me through Leah leaving.
And he didn't mention any of this to me.
Are you sure that you're right?
- No.
But it's just like with any wish, you know,
I have to take risks in order to figure it out as I go.
No matter who it is.
Are you okay with that?
- Yeah.
Okay.
It's just that sometimes,
you don't know what you have until it's gone.
[emotional music]
?
- I'll be careful.
So, um, how's it going with, uh, Ms. Wilczek?
- Oh, well, yesterday,
I cordoned off the whole well area
with this stuff.
So we are good.
Ruby: [sighs]
- Caution tape, check.
Old equipment, check.
Rusty tools, check.
Haunted lumber, check.
- Sounds photogenic.
Daniel: Not even close.
?
Ruby: [breathes deeply]
Uh, hi, Tessa.
- Hi, girls.
What's up?
- Um, Aunt Tessa,
do you have time to talk about, uh...
- A romance matter.
- Oh.
Seb?
Yes, of course.
- Um, I'm wondering,
how do you know when you found the one?
- The one?
Mina, you're kidding, right?
Aren't you a little young
to be thinking about marriage?
- I mean, you met Pete in high school.
- Yeah, okay, good point, I guess.
But still, it's not something that you just jump into.
41% of all first marriages end in divorce.
And, of the ones that stayed together,
a quarter of them say they're unhappy.
That is a 66% fail rate.
- Ouch.
- Mm-hm.
People can be out of sync about a lot of things.
Career, family.
It's a real mine field.
- How do you know so much about this?
Tessa: Well, I'm gonna be a lawyer,
so it's how we think about things, carefully.
- Is that the only reason?
?
- Well...
- Well?
?
- Okay.
If I am being honest, maybe I have been...
evaluating things with Pete.
People keep growing after high school, right?
Into who they're gonna be?
- And Pete?
- Well, I don't know.
We're in a rough patch.
I mean, I love Pete.
Like crazy.
But sometimes,
it just feels like we want different things.
I mean, he's a small-town guy,
I'm kinda diggin' the city.
What if we both can't make our dreams work?
What if we're just holding each other back?
- Plus, the canceled dates must bother you
and the hiding stuff on his computer.
- What?
- Uh...
nothing.
I, um...
Sam just said that he was acting kinda weird
and suspicious, like, at work.
Probably nothing, though.
- Really?
- It's something you might wanna ask him about.
- So, who exactly
is giving whom the advice here?
- Um, it runs in the family.
- [nervous chuckling]
- Are we good?
- I mean, yeah.
We are.
Ruby: [chuckles awkwardly]
Bye, Tessa.
- Bye.
Mina: Thank you, Aunt Tessa.
Bye.
[melancholic music]
Tessa: You haven't even acknowledged
how I feel right now.
You're not the one that's been...
Ruby: What's going on?
- She's lawyering him.
Ruby: [sighs]
- Facts, figures, analysis, persuasion.
Ruby: [sighs]
Just like she did with us.
- Even my mom has stopped arguing
with Aunt Tessa.
She says mere mortals can't win.
Pete: ...when you're lawyering again.
- I'm done.
Pete: No, Tessa,
that wasn't even a conversation, all right?
That was-- that was a cross-examination.
Tessa: Pete, this is what I need right now, okay?
I'm sorry.
?
- [sighs]
Well...
- We did it.
Backwards wish granted?
- Hooray?
- [sighs]
?
Sam: So, it's done?
You really did this?
- So done.
- And Pete?
- A beeline back for the garage.
- I don't know about you guys,
but I don't really have
that happy, wish-granted feeling.
- Yeah, well, maybe we just need to play it out.
- Yeah, well, I'm gonna go see how Pete is.
- And I'm gonna check to see if Aunt Tessa's okay.
[gentle music]
- [sighs]
Ava: But why, abji?
Tessa: [emotional] I don't even know.
He's the best guy I've ever known,
but he's just locked up so tight.
He never tells me what he's thinking
so I never know
if we're headed in the same direction.
Ava: But you've gone through some rough patches before.
You got through those.
So you'll get through this one, too.
- Yeah, I know, but...
somehow, this feels different.
And it's been brewing for a while now.
Ava: You're meant to be.
I'm never wrong about these things.
Tessa: [sobs]
Ava: I see the way you guys look at each other.
Tessa: I know, but still,
I had so many questions about, you know,
what he was and, and where we were going
that I just-- I had to confront him.
I just had to,
with grounds to treat the witness as hostile.
- What did he say?
- He said nothing.
I asked him point-blank
about the money and the secrecy,
and he told me nothing.
He just swore he wasn't cheating,
and now, I don't know what to think.
Why did I do this?
[crying]
- [quietly] It's okay.
Shh.
Tessa: No, no, it's not okay!
It's not okay!
[sobbing]
This could be the end of the line for us!
And I still love him!
[sobbing]
[somber music]
[acoustic guitar music]
?
- ? You add up all my flaws ?
? I count your every tear ?
? Blind to all the moments ?
? That used to draw us near ?
? Why do we see the raindrops ?
? And miss the rainbow's hue ?
? When all is said and done, my sweet ?
? I love you, I do ?
? Above the clouds, soaring through ?
? Above the clouds, me and you ?
? When all is said and done, my sweet ?
? I love you, I do ?
? I love you, I do ?
[water burbling]
Sam: It was awful.
Maybe you heard it from here.
Kind of a snapping sound or maybe more of a crunch.
You know, the sound of my heart
literally breaking.
- Probably got drowned out by the sound of mine
doing the same thing.
- He loves her, you guys.
No doubt about it.
The lyrics, the rainbow, the rain.
It's even part of the clues.
- I know, Aunt Tessa's the same way.
Just no guitar, more tears.
I'm starting to think the unthinkable,
that Sam was right.
- He is.
The logbook won't even let me write the wish.
It's not finished.
- What about all his suspicious behavior?
- Maybe there's another reason for it.
- Then let's find out.
[mysterious music]
?
Mina: This is wrong.
Ruby and Sam: Yup.
[door creaking shut]
Ruby: Hold on.
There.
[car alarm wailing]
Sam: [hisses]
Ruby!
Ruby: Um, I---
[car alarm wailing]
Um--
Sam: No!
Ruby: Wait.
Find it!
Uh...
Sam: [exhales]
[alarm stops]
[breathlessly] There.
- This is so wrong, and now we're caught.
Instant karma!
Sam: Shh!
Ruby: I--
- Come on.
[exhales]
?
Okay, password.
Any guesses?
- Um, oh, no.
This is the most wrong part of all!
- [sighs]
- You know she's right.
I can't do this.
- I agree, but we need to figure out
what the unexplained expenses were
and what the late night searching's for.
Mina: Easy, look!
- "Bridal Best"?
"Wedding Memories"?
- Uh, "The Perfect Proposal"?
"Eye-popping Question Popping"?
- Yeah.
- Wow.
- He was researching.
- The perfect marriage proposal.
- What?
But that doesn't make any sense.
- I-it does.
He was planning for a big expensive secret.
So, Pete was totally above board all along.
- Yeah.
That's good, right?
- Yeah, but it also means that this wish
is totally and completely mixed up.
- Either that or the well is.
- No...
Y-you don't mean?
- Disenchantment, stage one.
?
[indistinct chatter]
- "Where in the world is a magic well?
[confused] "In Emerald.
"Dreams come true in this picturesque village
where a magical wishing well grants your heart's desires."
Great.
[ominous music]
Mina: Okay, maybe the well is fine.
Maybe we just missed something.
- We've accounted for the rainbow and the rain.
The video, still no idea.
And then, there's the mirror.
The first time I looked in it,
I saw Viole.
[gasps]
And then the second time,
I saw me.
So now...
[whimsical music]
?
[gasps]
- What?
- You saw something?
- Uh, the wish, i-it's forwards again.
Mina: Well, obviously, you're looking in a mirror.
Ruby: Yeah, but because the mirror's a clue,
the well wants me to use it.
[incredulous laugh]
Mina: You're saying the well gave you the wish backwards
so you could look at it again forwards?
- Exactly.
Pete made a wish a couple of years ago.
He was in love.
And with a little help from us,
his wish came true.
- Cut to two years later,
his wish appears again backwards.
He must have had cold feet.
He wasn't sure if he was ready
to ask the big question.
- So we grant this version, they break up.
Mina: Pete saw what his life would be like
without my Aunt Tessa,
and she saw what her life would be like
without him.
Sam: They're both miserable.
- A-and now he stands by his original wish.
The backwards wish is now forwards.
Sam: Okay, so we know what to do.
We have to unwind the unwinding.
- Only, how?
- Yeah, what's the plan?
Ruby: Same as always.
Stumble forward, no map.
- All right.
- No map.
- He did what?
- Trespassed.
Plain and simple.
We had an agreement, didn't we,
not to cross the caution tape.
That well has sentimental value
to my family.
And I never allow it to be photographed.
Amanda: Please believe me when I tell you,
I had no idea he had gone anywhere off-limits.
- Well, I don't even know how he got that picture.
There was construction all around the well.
- Well, what can I say?
The guy's a pro at Photoshop.
And I'm sorry, Dan,
but the mailing has already gone out.
- You're kidding me?
Amanda: Look, I'm sorry.
I-I-I honestly feel terrible about this.
Tell me, what can I do to make it up to you?
- Stay off my property for good.
- [stutters]
Dan!
?
Are you, uh, hiding something?
[mysterious music]
?
Mina: Okay, my mom says Khaleh Tessa
is up to her eyeballs in prep for exams,
and she won't answer her phone.
- Pete's convinced everything's over.
- We need to get them communicating again, somehow.
Sam: You know, Pete's such a good guy,
but this wish was made from insecurity.
I just wish he knew
how anybody would be lucky to have him.
Mina: He's the full package, what my mom calls "a catch."
- So...
we need to get Pete
to look past his own insecurities.
And then we need to get them talking again
but about positives not negatives.
- It's too bad Pete can't see how great he is.
- [sighing] Yeah.
[upbeat music]
I have an idea for that.
- And then to get them talking again?
[phone dings]
- eCard.
I have an idea for that, too.
Mina: Okay, but first,
we have to get Khaleh Tessa back here.
- I have--
Mina and Sam: An idea for that, too?
- What?
I do.
- [laughs]
- You want me to sue Amanda "the Wolf" Wilczek?
Uh, no.
People in Emerald don't sue each other
over stuff like this.
- Can't you send her
a simple cease and desist letter
or something?
- But why?
Ruby: [on phone] Because I'm hoping you can convince
a certain law school student to come back to town,
assess the situation,
and, oh, maybe rediscover the love of her life
while she's at it?
- In that case, I'm in.
- [laughs]
- Well, I'm not surprised.
A letter from you with all of that legal mumbo-jumbo
would scare the daylights out of me, too.
- Mom, 9-1-1.
- [inaudible] 'Kay.
When do you leave again?
[whispering] What does that mean?
Mina: We need to get Khaleh Tessa
to come here.
It's the only chance
to get her and Pete back together.
We need to save their relationship.
- Uh-uh, sorry. Tess.
You're not dropping into town
and then scooting away without seeing us.
Tessa: [on phone] No, no, I-I do not have the time.
- Oh, you're so close.
Pop in for a minute.
Tessa: But I--
- Hi, it's Mina.
Um, we have a delivery for you
and the package says "Urgent",
but you need to be here to sign for it.
- We promise.
Won't keep you too long.
Mina: Okay, great, thanks, Pete.
See you in a bit.
- See you in a bit, bye.
[phone beeps]
- Yes!
[ripping]
- Hi--
Mina: Pete!
- Mina, Ava.
You guys have a package for me, right?
- Yes, back here.
Here you go.
Pete: [exhaling] All right.
Thank you.
- No, you have to open it.
- That's okay, I can just open it--
- No, look at the back.
Pete: [chuckles]
Okay.
[tape rips, rustling]
Um...
[tissue paper rustles]
I think there was a mistake, I didn't order this.
Sam: Nope, but I did.
It's for you to have a good look at yourself.
Mina: See?
You're a great guy with so much going for you.
Pete: [chuckles]
Okay.
Well, thank you.
It's actually kind of nice to hear.
I got-- I gotta go.
Sam: It's just...
we get it.
- Your choices.
It's hard to be confident when you're not sure, right?
- [scoffing] What are you talking about?
Mina: It's about you and my Aunt Tessa.
The two of you.
- You shouldn't have broken up.
Pete: [sighs]
Mina: You guys were meant to be together.
Everybody sees that, except you guys.
- You're the best, and she needs to see that.
Marry her, man.
Both: You have to!
- Holy smokes, you two.
Meddle much?
- That's how we roll.
- [sighs]
Thank you, okay?
I appreciate the sentiment, really.
Tessa...
she has really big dreams, right?
Too big to come true here.
I love her enough to let her go
so she can follow those dreams.
- That's so sweet.
- Mmm, dumb.
But sweet.
Pete: I don't wanna talk about it anymore, all right?
In case you haven't noticed,
I'm not exactly a words kinda guy.
- We know that, so we thought
we'd put the words together for you.
Check it out.
Woman 1: ? Baby ?
Man 1: ? Baby ?
Both: ? Nothing I can say ?
? 'Cause we're better together ?
Woman 1: ? Baby ?
Man 1: ? Baby ?
Peter: That, that is exactly what I would not do.
Mina: Well, just imagine.
Then how would you express how you feel
to my Aunt Tessa?
Pete: [sighs]
[sighs heavily]
[poignant music]
Okay, she's the lawyer, all right?
She's got the words, not me.
- Just try, please?
- Okay, well, first, I guess...
[smacks lips]
I would...
tell her how much she means to me.
- Okay, and second?
- Second, I would...
let her know that she is my entire world.
- Aw.
Pete: She's the reason
that I wake up every morning with a smile.
She makes even the toughest days easier
just being there.
I might not be the best with words,
but I love her more than I could possibly express.
And I was just grateful to have her by my side.
And she makes my life better in every way.
[sentimental music]
?
Made...
my life better in every way.
- We understand that you had something planned.
Pete: [exasperated] Guys, why are you doing this?
Sam: Come on, Pete.
We wanna know.
Pete: Yeah, I did.
I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.
She just...
she lifts me up in every way,
and I wanted to do the same for her.
To lift both of us up together.
- Where?
?
- [inhales]
[exhales]
?
Well, where else?
Above the clouds.
- [laughs]
Pete: ? I love you, I do ?
Ruby: Turns out disenchantment
can just as easily swing back into enchantment.
Pete: ? Above the clouds, soaring through ?
? Above the clouds... ?
Ruby: With people,
sometimes all it takes is a real heart to heart
to clear the way to the words we all really want to hear.
Pete: Look down!
Tessa: [laughing]
Let me think about it!
Yes!
[laughing] Yes!
Ruby: And then,
there's that happy wish-granted feeling
that you did get it right after all.
But what about the well?
What about keeping it from disenchantment
as the world closes in on it?
Is it time to make my wish?
I wish this would never end.
[mystical music]
?
[exhales]
I wish this would never end.
?
Daniel: No comment.
And please don't call back.
Guy from the Herald wanting to talk
about this heartwarming wishing well legend.
Ruby: So today,
we managed to wind a wish back, twice.
Leaving one question remaining...
what about mine?
