Original subtitles

Daniel: Where is it?

- Still can't find your wedding ring?

- I took it off for work again

and then I... I don't know.

It just grew legs and walked away.

- Well, it'll turn up.

Do not worry.

- Not worried.

Ruby: Hey, uh, serendipity!

I found snacks:

two mints, and what I hope is a raisin.

[chuckles]

Daniel: Anyway, I gotta run.

Duty calls.

[mysterious music]

- It sure does.

[dramatic music]

?

[laughter]

what she was hiding.

- [panting]

[theme music]

?

?

I think this wish involves me,

and the bad, actually horrible news

was there was a video of me and Hannah at the well.

Sam: There was what?

Ruby: Uh, Hannah,

the little girl, uh, next well-keeper,

it, it was a clue, it was the two of us,

and it was like someone was there,

watching or recording.

Mina: What was in the video?

Uh, what were you talking about

when you showed her the well?

Ruby: Oh, nothing, uh, just how magic wells work,

and what makes them secret and special,

and I can't believe someone filmed the whole thing!

[exhales sharply]

- Please tell me there's good news too.

Right.

Ruby: Okay, and, eh, the question is,

who shot the video,

and, and what if someone discovered the well,

and now they have video evidence to back it up?

- We need a suspect list.

Ruby: Yeah, um...

[sighs]

Sorry, Mina, but...

Mina: No, no, not Seb.

Seb would never do anything like that.

Maybe his dad, or Kevin Murphy, anyone--

Sam: I should probably--

Mina: --but not Seb.

Sam: --take this.

Maybe now we focus on a less personal clue,

like the TV remote?

- Fine, um...

it was small, uh, black, rectangular...

had a bunch of little buttons,

something like this.

Mina: Aisle 6, electronics.

Ava: Nope.

Haven't sold those in, like, 20 years.

We do carry the universal remotes,

but that's vintage.

- Okay, thanks, Mom.

So...

if the remote is vintage, maybe the wisher is too.

- Well, if that's the case, then we know where to go.

Bingo hall, crochet class, Florida...

- Florida?

- Yeah, not Florida.

- Okay, how about somewhere

that connects to another clue,

like the golf tee?

Woman 1: I gave this a lot of thought.

Escape plans are serious business.

So I'd hightail it out that door.

Now, if it was blocked, then there's the back door.

- I'm impressed.

Woman 1: I could've gone out that window,

except, uh, the blinds are so messed up.

I tried to fix them, but they just got angrier.

[stuttering] Maybe you could, uh...?

- Uh... sure, yeah.

No problem.

Um...

- Your ring!

- Oh, yeah.

I took it off for the job the other day and...

Yeah, I don't know, I-- it disappeared.

Woman 1: No...

I'll get the word out.

Daniel: No, no, no, no, you don't have to...

Okay, thanks.

[smack]

Woman 2: Heads up, heads up!

Ruby: Um, excuse me?

Hi!

Do you guys sell golf tees?

- Yeah, sure, um, what are you looking for?

There's, uh, wood, there's plastic,

rubber, bamboo, composite...

- Well, I was today years old

when I found out there were so many types of golf tees!

- Yeah, but none of them match exactly.

Thanks!

Employee: Yeah, um, is there anything else

I can help with?

Seriously, please.

This job is so boring.

- Um...

not unless you know anything about video footage.

Bakari: I'm your guy!

I'm all over socials.

Check it out.

[cheering]

- Oh, wow!

Um...

the video that we saw was a bit boxier.

Bakari: Could've been a different aspect ratio.

I shoot widescreen, but, if it was boxy,

it could've been an older camera.

- An older camera.

That ties in with the older remote.

- Okay, but who would use an older camera?

Bakari: Older people.

Or people trying to be retro,

it's a whole thing.

The AV Club at your school is all over it.

Woman 1: Oh, thank you so much.

I thought I'd have to wait for my sister,

but you're handier,

and you let me get a word in edgewise.

[chuckling]

Daniel: Happy to help, happy to listen.

Woman 1: Oh, I owe you snickerdoodles!

Daniel: No, no, no, all in the line of duty.

Save 'em for your sister's next visit.

- [scoffs]

They'd be green and fuzzy if I waited for that.

- [chuckling]

Woman 1: Oh, but, before you go,

I have a wobbly banister.

And, and what do you know about dishwashers?

- I do have other safety visits to do.

- Should've stopped at the blinds, Delores.

You got greedy.

Daniel: No, no, no, I understand.

Owning a house is a lot.

You ever thought about getting

a more manageable place?

- [sighs]

I wouldn't know where to start.

- Well, I know a couple of realtors that--

Delores: What about tomorrow?

- All right.

House hunting.

Tomorrow.

- Good!

[laughing]

Ruby: Okay, if anybody's into old cameras,

this is the place.

Sam: AV Club.

Ruby: [gasps]

Mina: Seb?

- Hey, guys!

[intriguing music]

- Uh, nice shirt.

- Oh, it's... temporary.

I, I wrecked mine trying to develop old-style film.

But luckily, a very fashionable colleague

came to the rescue.

- Oh, so it's--

- A loaner.

Thanks to...

- The novelty T-shirt king.

Ruby: Oh, so you own

more than one novelty taco shirt?

- That's why I'm the king.

?

- We know who the wisher is.

- So the next question is...

- Do we tell him our secret?

?

[gentle music]

?

Kevin's Voice: I wish I knew what she was hiding.

Sam's Voice: We know who the wisher is.

Ruby's Voice: Do we tell him our secret?

?

?

Ruby: Can't tell Kevin Murphy about you,

my... mission is to protect you, I...

Welcome to ungrantable wish number 487.

[sighs]

Have to talk to somebody.

?

Mina would kill me.

?

[ringing]

- Aren't you the early bird?

Ruby: Um, more like night owl.

I can't sleep.

I was thinking about that well

that's near you.

- The dead one?

- How many people found out about it before--

Finn: Its grisly end?

Only a handful.

But there was one real blabbermouth.

Once they knew, the whole town knew, so...

- Right, so...

quality of secret keepers over quantity.

- What's wrong?

Your eyebrows are bunched together

all worried-like.

- Nothing.

Just a big decision I gotta make,

and if I choose the wrong thing,

then my whole life is, you know, ruined.

- Oh, no, that's cat.

It means "awful."

- [chuckles]

Seems awfully mean to cats.

- It is what it is.

I don't make the rules.

You wanna talk about it?

- No, uh, you're on a strictly need-to-know basis.

Actually, that's an idea.

- What's an idea?

- The one that you just gave me.

Thanks, Finn!

- You know me, your go-to well-ologist.

See ya.

Ruby: Bye!

?

Realtor: I promised my boss I'd find you the perfect home

and that's what I'm gonna do.

- Well, I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm,

young man.

[chuckles]

Realtor: Now, this gem right here

is ideal for downsizing.

It's all one level, making it very accessible.

It's a more manageable size than your current home,

but with this modern layout, it'll actually feel bigger.

And with these huge triple-pane windows,

you'll have no shortage of natural light.

- Ah!

Realtor: Most importantly, it's got a certain charm

that'll make you feel at home in no time,

it's a showstopper, I know you'll love it.

- That sidewalk?

I'd go tail over teakettle.

[chuckles]

Realtor: Oh, uh...

Okay, uh, how about this one, since you like cooking?

It's got a chef's kitchen.

- Sure, if you like getting poked

with sharp corners.

Oof.

- But...

How about this one?

The bathroom is just--

- It's a death trap!

Oh, my goodness.

- Listen, uh, I'm sorry,

I actually have to get to work now, so...

- Oh, well, we'll try again tomorrow!

- Sure!

New day!

Right, Brian?

- Sure!

New day.

[chuckles nervously]

?

Ruby: Okay, guys, this is the plan:

we tell Kevin just enough to grant the wish

and not a word more.

[clears throat]

- Hey, Kev.

Got a sec?

Kevin: Ah, for you guys, always.

Ruby: Ha.

So, um, listen,

we know that you've been wondering

what we're up to.

Kevin: Well, it has crossed my mind, uh...

uh, let's see...

7,493...

Make that 94 times.

Ruby: Huh.

Oh, well, eh, we know it'd be crazy

to keep it a secret from you.

So...

- So we thought we'd let you in on it.

- Uh, the, the, the truth is, um, we are...

We're up to stuff!

Like... everyone.

- Okay.

[silence]

Like what?

- Uh, like, h-how some people join AV Club

or, or play tennis,

we do... different extracurriculars.

- Ones that help the community.

- Right, so, uh, that's what we're up to.

- Nice.

So, what do you do exactly?

- Exactly?

- Yeah.

- W-w-we help people, eh, people who need our help.

Kevin: You said that already.

How?

- [stammering]

One second.

[softly] It's not working, he wants to know everything!

- [softly] You know, the well has a way

of getting us out of these situations.

Sam: She's right.

We need to just trust the well

and ease in a bit further.

Kevin: There you all go again!

Yeah, whispering, mysterious, ha...

I gotta tell you, I can't wait

to hear what this is all about.

Ruby: Fine.

Since you took the video,

you're probably this close anyways.

Um...

There's a wishing well.

- Okay.

And...?

- And it's on my property.

Kevin: Understood, continue.

- And...

I hear...

wishes.

- Not sure I follow.

- From the well,

I, I hear, I hear wishes from the well.

- Okay?

- So we're good, then!

[laughs nervously]

Kevin: Not really!

No, so... how do you hear wishes?

- Uh, uh, voices.

I, I hear the wish in...

wisher's voice.

- And that's it?

- Not entirely.

Kevin: Then please go on!

Ruby: Oh, ah, heh, right, okay, well, um...

[stammers]

And then I see visions that are clues,

and then we figure out what the clues mean,

and then we grant the wish, the end.

[chuckles nervously]

[intriguing music]

- Oh, ho-ho-ho.

Cool.

Thanks, guys.

- What...

What, that's it?

- Yes, and what a relief.

I finally get to check this

off my unsolved-mysteries spreadsheet.

[chuckles]

Thanks.

- So, so you're all, all good,

you understand everything that I just said?

- Oh, sure do, I totally get it.

[chuckles]

?

You guys LARP.

Mina: We what?

Kevin: Live Action Role-Play,

so you do a wishing-well LARP thing, yeah?

Sam: Yeah, yeah.

Kevin: Ah, cool, cool.

Wish I had time to join you, but, man, full schedule.

Appreciate the offer, though.

Means a lot.

- Uh... huh.

Sam: [softly] That went well.

Kevin: By the way, no idea what video

you're talking about.

Yeah, it wasn't me.

- [softly] The video wasn't Kevin?

- [softly] Okay, I can't even process this right now.

- [softly] But we told him, so the wish is done, right?

- [sighs]

Nope!

The logbook won't accept the wish.

- The wish hasn't been granted.

So Kevin Murphy's not the wisher?

- Oh, he is, all the clues led to him,

and I'm pretty sure it was his voice.

- Maybe the "she" in the wish...

- Isn't me.

- And the secret--

- Isn't the well!

- Yes!

- Yes!

Yes!

- Wait, so...

what does Kevin's wish mean, then?

Ruby: That's what we need to find out.

Huh.

I guess we're about to spend some time

getting to know the real Kevin Murphy.

?

Sam: Wow, there's a lot about Kevin I never knew.

Mina: Yeah, he really gets around!

Sam: He's already been to the AV Club, comic shop...

Mina: Corner store, the comic shop,

the library...

- And the comic shop.

- [sighs]

He does literally nothing, yet has a very full schedule.

Kevin: You know I can hear you, right?

Mina: Oh!

Kevin: Uh-huh.

Nice try.

Girls: Hi.

- Hey, Kev.

Kevin: Do you mind telling me

why you've been following me all day?

Mina: Uh, following you?

What?

Kevin: Drop the act, I saw you at the comic shop,

then at the comic shop, then at the comic shop,

what do you want?

- Uh...

What do you think we want?

- True.

I am kind of a LARPing legend.

Ruby: Mm-hmm.

Kevin: Again, appreciate the offer,

but, uh, you'll have to find someone less skilled,

but, uh, more available.

Mina: Hm.

- Hey, Grandma!

Grandma: Hello, Peanut!

- Fixed your remote.

Grandma: [gasps]

Kevin: Good as new.

- The remote!

It's hers.

- Just in time for...

Both: Dame Detective!

- "Solving stumpers..."

- "...with senior savvy!"

Both: Yes!

Grandma: Come on!

[laughs]

- It's gotta be her.

Sam: Yeah.

And if Kevin's grandma's the "she" in the wish,

then we just need to find out...

- What's her secret?

?

- So LARPing, huh?

And I was embarrassed about a taco T-shirt?

- Kevin told you?

Seb: Yeah.

And I can see why you wanted to keep it on the down-low.

- Ha, yeah.

Seb: Don't worry.

Still like my little LARP-er...

LARP-ist?

LARP-ographer?

Anyway, I'm not judging.

Mina: Oh, you totally are.

Seb: Yeah, I totally am.

[chuckles softly]

?

- So, uh...

Dame Detective, great show, lots of twists and turns.

Kevin: Yeah, it's not bad.

It's not great either.

For me, it's mostly about spending time with Grandma.

- That's sweet.

- Yeah, she's the best, but, you know,

she's on her own, and only has a few friends,

so I don't want her to be lonely.

Ruby: That's even sweeter.

Kevin: What can I say, I'm adorable.

Both: [chuckle]

- Yeah, but annoyingly,

Grandma always solves the mystery right before me.

Smug about it, too.

- Sounds like quite the character.

- Oh, yeah.

Retired bookstore manager.

Well-read and whip-smart, kind but coy,

loving but guarded.

- Guarded?

- [sighs]

Yeah, like...

I'm always asking her about the old days, you know,

but nope.

It's like she's hiding something.

My grandma: a riddle wrapped in a mystery,

wrapped in a pink knitted shawl.

- I bet you'd love to know what she was hiding.

- [chuckles]

I wish.

?

Delores: Too modern.

Brian: How 'bout this one?

- Stucco?

Why would anybody do that

to a perfectly innocent house?

- [clears throat]

- Oh, don't worry, sweetie, we have lots of time!

So much time!

[chuckles]

Brian: [whistles]

Do you have a moment?

- Sure, yeah, what's on your mind?

- How would you say this process has been going?

- To be honest, a little slow.

- It's going very slow.

- Right.

- Very, very slow.

- You must have cautious clients like this

all the time, what's the rush?

Brian: I promised Amanda

I'd find Mrs. Martin something today.

- Oh.

- Yeah, while she's out dealing with her big campaign

to lure buyers to town,

I'm supposed to close the easy deals,

but this is... not easy.

- Right.

But at Mrs. Martin's age, she has needs--

- I do too.

The need to keep my job.

Ah.

Right!

Mrs. Martin, somebody dropped this off

for you.

Delores: Oh!

- [sighs]

Daniel, somebody found your ring!

Daniel: What, really?

Oh, that...

Oh...

No, actually, sorry, it's not mine.

But hopefully, it will make somebody else happy.

- Don't worry, sweetie.

We'll find your ring, and my house.

We just have to keep at it.

Brian: [forces laughter]

Keep at it, yeah, sounds good.

Mina: Any movement?

Ruby: [sighs]

Not since she left the kitchen.

- Where did she go?

Was that a door to the basement, or...?

- It has to be.

- She's been down there a very long time.

- Yeah, what do you think she's doing down there?

- Laundry?

Ironing?

Fight club?

- Fight club?

- Okay, not fight club.

- Okay, you know, I'm starting to cramp up.

- Me too.

[sighs]

I have a crazy idea.

- Let's ask Kevin.

?

Kevin: The door.

In the kitchen, you're joking.

- Uh, well, that's where she went.

Why is that strange?

Kevin: She keeps that door locked!

Like, always.

Yeah, it leads down to the basement,

she says it's for safety, but...

Ruby: Uh, uh!

[chuckles nervously]

- Why do you even care,

why are you watching my grandma's house?

- Because, um...

of the wishing well LARP thing!

Sam: Live Action Roleplay.

- Right, yeah, because, uh, the LARPing thing we do

is about solving wishes, remember?

- Okay.

Sam: Well, uh, don't you wish you knew more

about what your grandma was doing down there?

Kevin: I, I guess so,

but it's weird to just up and ask her.

Hey, Grandma,

why are you spending so much quality time

with your sump pump?

Ruby: Uh, well, maybe you don't have to,

uh, if you keep Grandma busy, then we can check it out.

- Okay.

I'll find room in my schedule.

?

Grandma: Such a nice day.

Kevin: Mm-hmm.

Sam: Hey, Kevin.

Kevin: Hey, Sam.

?

?

Ruby: It's locked, just like he said.

Mina: We have to find a key.

Sam: Yeah, there's gotta be a key somewhere.

Ruby: There has to be something here.

Look for obvious, but not too obvious.

Sam: Whoa, vintage candy.

Ew!

- Bingo.

[chuckles softly]

?

Sam: Whoa.

Grandma doesn't just solve TV mysteries.

Mina: She wants to solve one in real life.

?

Ruby: Only...

What is it?

[dramatic crescendo]

We need to look into this.

So, your Grandma was investigating a case

from way back.

Sam: It was a big story.

High rollers, crooked cops, shocking accusations...

- And murder.

- Murder?

But why would my grandma investigate

a hundred-year-old murder?

- Because the killer was...

Kevin: Horace Murphy?

My great-great-grandfather?

[softly] Grandma, you never told me.

Oh no.

Ruby: This wish just keeps getting worse.

Kevin finally knows

what his grandmother is hiding,

and then he learns that

his great-great-grandfather is a murderer?

Mina: Well, now that he knows,

does that mean the wish is granted?

- Nope.

His grandma's secret only means more questions,

like, why did she hide this from him?

- And why is she still looking at the case

after all these years?

That woman has secrets, but what are they?

- There's only one way to find out.

- Ask her.

- I don't know, Mom.

Maybe it's time for me

to take my wedding ring off anyway, you know?

Maybe this is a sign.

Maybe...

[chuckles]

I actually thought about taking it off with Leah.

But I just...

And then that fell apart,

and it was nobody's fault, but...

you know, why take it off at that point, right?

Is it holding me back, like, is it...

preventing me from being completely open

to any sort of new relationship in my life?

You're right, it's not me.

That ring does mean something to me.

It doesn't mean that I'm, uh,

I'm still mourning, or still a sad sack, or...

anything like that, I think it just means

that there's something important

wrapped up in that little circle

that's around my finger.

I don't have to take it off

to welcome something new into my life

that is also important.

Thank you, Mom, that's-- I, I really needed to--

[beep]

Voicemail: If you are satisfied with your message,

please press pound,

or press star for more options.

- [sighs deeply]

I just hope I find it.

- Fine!

Busted.

But what about this breaking and entering?

Should I call the authorities on you, kids?

- Grandma, I, I let them in.

- [chuckles nervously]

Grandma: I'm gonna need my key back, Peanut.

- Yeah.

Ruby: Ma'am, I, I hope you don't mind,

and I don't mean to pry--

- Said Little Miss Nosy, about to pry.

- Why didn't you tell Kevin about the case?

- Oh...

well, I'm almost glad you know now,

because I felt bad keeping it from you.

But I wanted to protect you

from your family's sordid past, and...

But, but, then, this historian gal

d-doing all this Emerald research--

Sam: Mrs. Rivers-Snyder, yeah.

She's been researching a lot about Abbot Radcliffe,

the tunnels...

Ruby: And writing a new book.

Grandma: Yeah, she's been asking.

I told her to take a walk.

Mina: But I get why she'd wanna know,

I mean, it's a great thing

to put in a book about Emerald.

- Yes, but the last thing I wanted

was for this story to go on permanent record

before I prove it wrong.

- Prove it wrong?

- Look.

Growing up with a grandpa in prison wasn't easy.

That's why I wanted

a real relationship with you, Peanut,

one I didn't have with my grandpa.

- I can appreciate that.

Grandma: The worst thing is,

I never believed for a second that he was guilty.

He wouldn't hurt a fly.

- You think that he was wrongly convicted?

- And I plan to prove it.

- How?

Any details?

Maybe we can help!

- Well, I guess fresh eyes can't hurt.

This is what I put together.

Granddad Horace Murphy was a blacksmith.

A proud, honest... but very uptight man.

No murderer, if you ask me.

But he was accused and tried.

They called him a phony with a dark side,

a degenerate gambler with a short temper

and a lust for blood.

But, in reality,

he was a stuffed shirt, a, a stickler,

he was a mouse of a man, you know,

he was boring!

A gambler who attacked a man with a hammer?

Never.

But, even worse,

the victim was Constable Bobby Johnson,

a well-liked police officer.

He was found dying, with a terrible head injury.

My grandfather's ball-peen hammer

was found nearby,

he etched his name on all of his tools.

It was open and shut.

[boom]

My grandfather pled innocent

until the day he died on death row.

They say he died of a broken heart.

- Poor Horace.

- That's so sad.

- And so unfair.

Kevin: Yeah, well...

if anyone can prove he was innocent,

it's you, Grandma.

Grandma: Oh, ho-ho,

well, I appreciate the vote of confidence, kids, but...

I mean, while I'm good at TV mysteries,

this real-life one has me stumped.

Mina: Well, you've done most of the work already.

- Yeah, uh, do you mind if we take some of this stuff

and do our own research?

- Oh, be my guest!

Ruby: All right, to the archives!

- I can practically smell the microfilm already!

- You are so weird.

All: [chuckle]

[radio music]

Daniel: Hi, Ava.

Ava: Daniel.

Heard you're helping Mrs. Martin on a house hunt.

Brian was here.

He was a bit panicked.

- Yeah, yeah, it's been time-consuming,

but, eh, I don't mind.

Delores doesn't have a big network.

- Well, I think it's very sweet of you.

And I hope for her and Brian's sake

you find something soon.

- Mrs. Martin is picky.

I'm starting to wonder if she even wants to move.

[cell phone pings]

- Someone found your ring?

- No.

- Oh.

- That's a woman's ring.

- Mm.

[cell phone pings]

- Hey!

Oh.

Closer, but not mine.

- Mm.

[cell phone pings]

Ava: [chuckles]

- Now I'm just getting pranked.

Ava: [laughs]

- Anyway, Mrs. Martin's getting

a lot of traction.

Ava: Well, she has put up a lot of posters.

- You know, it's funny.

She can get a lot of things done if she wants to,

she's very capable.

I don't know why she's asking me

for so much help.

- Maybe there's something else goin' on.

Mina: Police records.

Both: [coughing]

Kevin: Dusty police records.

Ruby: [chuckles]

Sam: Says here, police claimed

Horace had a massive gambling debt,

and with do-gooder Johnson

threatening to bust up the ring,

he'd never win it back.

So Horace decided to kill him.

- And according to Grandma, Horace insisted he was framed

and never gambled a day in his life.

Ruby: So he was anti-gambling?

- Yeah, called it "a scourge on society."

Supposedly, some cops

were deep into the gambling ring,

but not our poor dead Johnson.

Ruby: Well, it all seems pretty circumstantial.

Let's see what the court transcript tells us.

Hey, I, uh, can't read these records, uh...

The page is ruined.

Kevin: [sniffs]

[coughs]

Vinegar syndrome.

It's a chemical degradation of microfilm,

makes it smell like a salad.

Mina: Oo.

Kevin: Egh.

Ruby: Too bad, this page was the testimony

from the witness who found Johnson,

I mean, whatever he said here put your

great-great-grandfather behind bars.

Sam: Guess we'll never know.

Mina: But what if there was something in the testimony

that everyone missed?

Ruby: Yeah, maybe, it would break this case wide open.

We need to find out what the witness said.

- But it's over a hundred years ago,

so how would we get that?

Ruby: [sighs]

- Does your, uh, magic well go back in time, too?

- [chuckles]

- Wait.

Even if it can't...

I can!

Sam: How?

Kevin: Podcasts.

Mina: And this guy podcasts about sensational old trials?

Kevin: Oh, yeah, he's always unearthing

legal treasures from the past.

And this case was a huge deal for Emerald.

The County of Emerald vs. Mr. Horace Murphy.

Broadcast over the radio.

Here's the part we need.

Prosecutor: The prosecution calls Mr. Allan O'Malley

to take the stand.

Ruby: That's the witness!

Prosecutor: Explain what you saw

the night you found Constable Robert Johnson

lying in the alley.

Allan: As the poor lad gasped his last breath,

I tried to help, but sadly, the man passed.

Prosecutor: And did he say anything to you

before he died?

Allan: He told me the name of the man that killed him.

Prosecutor: And what did he say?

Kevin: Oh, man, he's not really gonna say who did it--

All: Shh!

Allan: Before his last breath,

Constable Bobby Johnson said,

and I swear on my mother's grave,

that the fatal blow was struck

by none other than...

Horace.

Woman 3: Horace?

Man 1: Horace?

Judge: Order!

Order in the court!

Order!

- My grandfather...

did do it.

Ruby: So the wish goes so, so sideways.

Instead of proving

Kevin's great-great-grandpa's innocence,

we confirm his guilt.

- Ouch.

- Yeah, nice wish-granting, O'Reilly,

you're really starting to get the hang of it.

- Okay, so not ideal,

but at least, the wish is granted?

- Nope, I checked the logbook,

and surprise, surprise, still blank!

I mean, is the well just messing with me?

- [sighs]

Yeah, it's like my house hunting

with Mrs. Martin, it's unresolved.

Still a piece missing.

- So...

There's a chance

Kevin's great-great-grandpa is still innocent?

- I didn't say that.

- I'm gonna pretend you did!

?

Mina: I don't know.

I don't see it.

The victim said Horace's name.

Sam: Yeah, Ruby, it's pretty open and shut.

- On the surface, yes,

but we never figured out what the wish actually means,

and there's been one thing that's bugging me, okay?

The golf tee.

We still haven't figured out what it meant.

Maybe it connects to the murder somehow!

- Well, it's not much of a murder weapon.

- [sighs]

- Look.

I found an old map of Emerald from the 20s

with the crime scene marked "X".

We haven't checked there yet!

- It looks like the estates where the victim was found

is pretty close to a golf course.

Think it's the same one from before?

- Maybe.

And it would connect back to our clue!

So let's go back there and look around!

Maybe we missed something.

?

- Golf tees, I can help you guys with,

but a murder that happened a hundred years ago?

It's a bit above my pay grade.

Mina: So much for that.

Sam: [sighs]

Ruby, what's that?

- It's the golf tee.

Sam: Is it?

Ruby: Yeah.

- Wait, what exactly did it look like?

- It looked like a golf tee,

it was made of metal, had a square-ish head and--

Sam: The top of a golf tee is round, not square.

Ruby: It is?

?

It is.

Sam: And guess what looks just like a golf tee,

but has a square head and is made of metal?

Ruby: What?

- A horseshoe nail.

We have horses, I've seen a million of 'em.

Ruby: So...

a horseshoe nail means the horses,

and horses plus gambling equals horse racing.

It all make sense!

[laughs]

Mina: It does?

- It does.

Sam: Yeah, the whole Estates area was pretty posh

back in the 20s.

There were stables nearby, and a racetrack too.

- Pretty rough, though.

Some of the horses were nightmares.

- So does this mean anything to you?

- Maybe.

There was a lot of gambling going on,

and my grandpa claimed

some of the cops were in on it.

- But not Bobby Johnson.

- Oh, no, right, he kept his nose clean.

Ruby: So why would Murphy kill Johnson

if they were on the same side?

Grandma: Exactly, he wouldn't.

Kevin: So, then, who else had a motive?

- The dirty cops?

Grandma: The thing that really bothers me

is the fact that the wound didn't match

my grandfather's ball-peen hammer.

Kevin: Why, what did the wound look like?

Grandma: Oh, it was, uh, bigger, and more round,

Almost in a J shape.

- A J shape?

Mina: Got it here.

- What size?

- Says here about seven and a half inches across.

Sam: The same size as a horseshoe.

Ruby: Well, a J is most of a U.

Could a horseshoe have made the wound?

- I guess it could.

Kevin: But...

how would you kill someone with a horseshoe?

And why would you kill someone with a horseshoe?

- [sighs]

- It's just too weird.

- It's not adding up.

Daniel: New listings.

I'll leave them here for you.

Delores: Are you going so soon?

Oh, stay a few minutes.

I just put on some lemon ginger tea.

Heads and tails over that plain old lemon tea.

Ginger gives it a kick, trust me.

- How can I say no to that?

- Then I'm bustin' out the biscuits

and the clotted cream.

Daniel: [chuckles]

[soft music]

You know, this is such a lovely house.

It really feels like a home.

You sure that you're ready to leave?

- I don't know.

I love it here, but...

[sighs]

something's missing.

?

- Any idea what that is?

- Company.

?

Allan: ...none other than...

Horace.

None other than...

Horace.

Woman 3: Horace?

Allan: ...none other than...

Horace.

- No, no, no, no, no, no way.

Time to make a call and blow some minds.

[chuckles]

Thank you for coming, Mrs. Rivers-Snyder.

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: So, what exactly

am I doing here, at a barn, in my good shoes?

Mina: Sorry, but we wanted to share a new theory.

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Uh-huh.

Mina: One that changes part of Emerald's history.

Sam: Specifically, the true outcome

of the Constable Bobby Johnson murder.

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Oh, I didn't realize

there was a controversy.

Kevin: Oh, there is.

So, we wanna set the record straight,

once and for all.

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Well, I am all ears

and muddy shoes.

Ruby: Okay, places, people!

Grandma: Constable Bobby Johnson

was found at the Estates, not very far from here.

Ruby: But he could've been attacked nearby

and then moved, maybe to try and find help,

but then abandoned

when it was clear that he was dying.

Mina: Everyone assumed Horace Murphy was lying,

but what if he wasn't?

Sam: He hated gambling,

so dirty cops may have seen him

as a whistleblowing threat.

Grandma: Constable Johnson was also anti-gambling,

so that made him even more of a threat.

The cops wanted to keep Constable Johnson quiet.

So to scare him,

they put him in a stall with a wild horse.

All: [effortful breathing]

Ruby: But then, the wild horse bucked,

and kicked Johnson in the skull.

Kevin: [neighs]

Grandma: Which left a partially U-shaped wound,

as documented in the court records.

- Mm-hmm.

Ruby: The cops panicked!

They wanted to scare Johnson, not kill him.

Ruby and Mina: [effortful breathing]

Grandma: So, they dragged him out,

because they didn't want anyone to see them.

Ruby and Mina: [effortful breathing]

Grandma: So, they pulled him into an alley,

but when they discovered

that the noble officer wouldn't survive,

they just abandoned him.

And then, when the witness found him,

and asked Johnson, Who hurt you?,

Officer Johnson said...

- ...Horse.

- Not Horace.

Grandma: But when they heard that news--

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: The cops saw an opportunity

and ran with it.

With Johnson gone,

now they had to get rid of Horace too.

Grandma: So, they stole Horace's hammer

and planted it near the victim,

and the rest is...

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: History.

Well, it's about to be.

[chuckles]

- My grandfather insisted that he was framed,

but nobody ever believed him.

Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Until now.

- My grandfather was really innocent!

Ah!

We cracked it!

Together!

- Ah, with a little help from our LARPer friends.

- Oh, yeah.

Both: [chuckling]

[gentle music]

Ruby: Sharing something you've kept hidden

is one of the most vulnerable things

a person can do.

?

But when you bring your deepest worries

into the light,

you can bring yourself into it too.

?

Same thing with Mrs. Martin.

She was afraid to tell anyone how lonely she was.

Instead, she put up a brave front,

even to her sister.

But once she was vulnerable enough to admit it...

[doorbell rings]

...she could make changes to be happier.

Because fully sharing ourselves

brings us closer to the people we love.

Delores: Oh, look at you!

So nice to see you!

[dial tone]

Brian: Hey, Dan, what's up?

- So good news, Brian.

The house hunt is off.

Brian: You're kidding me!

- Yeah, Mrs. Martin's sister is moving in.

[knocking at the door]

Brian: Unbelievable, that's great news!

- I know, right?

It is great news.

Brian: So what's the--

- Uh, listen, can you hold on one minute?

Brian: Yep.

Ruby: Being vulnerable can open up

a whole new world of possibilities.

Daniel: Brea.

- I heard this was missing.

- Oh!

[tender music]

Wow.

Brea: Mrs. Martin asked me to return it.

She also said she'll be happy

to darn the hole in your pocket.

- 'Kay.

Ruby: Ones you may not have expected.

- I bet you're happy to have that back

- I am.

- Yeah.

- Thank you so much.

- Well, my pleasure!

Glad I could bring it over!

Ruby and Mina: [laughing]

Mina: Well, that worked out!

Ruby: I know!

Good thing we don't have to worry about revealing

a clue-giving, wish-granting, magic well

in my backyard.

Mina: Yeah, and our secret stays secret.

Ruby: For good!

[dramatic crescendo]

[theme music]
