Ruby: Previously on Ruby and the Well.
- Daniel, right?
Leah.
- Hi, Leah.
Sam: Radcliffe's escape route.
He could disappear whenever he wanted.
Ruby: Yeah, him and Evelyn.
We're going to Ireland, are you serious?
For how long?
Daniel: A month.
Ruby: [gasps]
Mina: The well takes up
so much of our time--
- The well?
Mina: I meant...
Well, it's just so busy with school and--
Tom: Every wellkeeper gets one wish, but...
the well wouldn't grant mine.
- The keeper gets a wish.
?
[bell rings]
Ruby: I'm so late.
Hello!
Hi!
Okay, where am I going?
What am I doing?
Where's my homeroom?
Where's my locker?
Let's see.
Mina: Ruby!
Sam: Hey, Ruby!
Ruby: [laughs]
Sam: Finally, our tiny square Zoom friend
is live and in person.
Ruby: Oh, the best trip ever but...
it's so good to be back.
Mina: So how's the jet lag?
Did they find your luggage?
Ahh, gosh, I'm so jealous
I'm even jealous of your lost luggage
and the jet lag!
Sam: Hey, and how'd things go with the Callahans
when you were gone?
Oh, and how's the well!?
Ruby: [grunts]
Sam: Whoa!
Mina: What's wrong?
Ruby: No more talking about the you-know-what in public,
like, not one word.
Mina: Okay? Sam: Why?
Ruby: I-I-I'll explain more later
but I learned things in Ireland.
Mina: Things?
Ruby: Yeah, so many things.
Am-amazing things, beautiful things,
and sort of scary things, too.
Sam: Okay.
Like?
Ruby: Like all the ways
a secret of a magic you-know-what can get out
and what can happen to a you-know-what
because of blabbing about a... you-know-what.
Sam: [haltingly] But the... you-know-what--
okay, no, wow, this is so awkward.
Can't we just call the you-know-what
something like...
Steve?
- Good idea!
We'll use a codeword.
So from now on no more talking about--
Mina: Steve!
- Because we definitely dropped the ball
with Mr. Lutes.
And Kevin Murphy.
And Seb--
Seb: Yes?
Mina: Seb!
Hey!
Seb: Uh, so who's Steve?
Mina: Uh, houseplant.
Very finicky, thinks it's a person.
Seb: Houseplant?
Okay, why not.
I just figured it was some guy
Ruby met in Ireland.
- No, apparently that's someone else
and we can't wait to hear all about him.
Ruby: [exhales]
So, please tell me we're all in the same homeroom?
Sam: Yeah!
This way.
[Irish music]
?
[cow moos]
[sheep bleats]
?
Boy 1: Don't have skies like that in Emerald, do ya?
Ruby: [laughs]
Stop it, I miss it already.
Boy: Well, you should.
It's your own fault for leavin' us.
Ruby: I know!
So much left to do.
- So much fun we were havin'.
Marathon talks.
Daniel: Hello, where are you?
Boy 1: And all the legends we were puzzlin' out.
Ruby: [laughs nervously]
Daniel: Speaking of puzzles-- hey, Finn--
Ruby, have you seen the souvenir stuff?
- Uh, yeah, it's with my backpack.
Daniel: Which isss...?
Ruby: Uh.
[exhales annoyedly]
Finn: Well, you two have settled back in nicely.
Ruby: Yeah!
Looks like life has gone on here without us.
The nerve!
Finn: So, not back to normal yet?
Ruby: Not yet.
[whimsical chimes]
Uh, although it looks like it will be again shortly!
I gotta go, Finn.
- Sl๏ฟฝn, lass.
Ruby: Sl๏ฟฝn, O'Hara!
?
Hey, you.
[exhales]
[whoosh]
?
[whimsical vocalizing]
?
Woman 1: I wish I had a smiley face vase
full of sunflowers.
[whoosh]
Ruby: Wait, there's more?
[exhales]
[whoosh]
[whimsical music]
Man 1: I wish I could banish the rapscallion.
Ruby: Still... more?
[whoosh]
[whimsical music]
[splash]
[shimmering]
?
Boy 2: I wish I had a secret.
Ruby: [gasping]
Three wishes at once?
[sighs excitedly]
[theme music]
?
?
Mina: Wow!
Three new wishes?
The well--
Sam: Mina!
Sam: Hey. Mina: Hi.
Sam: Steve.
Mina: Right.
Steve is not wasting any time.
Ruby: And neither are we.
Steve seems so...
I don't know...
impatient?
Sam: Then let's get 'em done.
Business as usual, divide and conquer?
Ruby: Yes, only... no.
Sam: What's wrong?
- things are just...ong,
different.
I did learn a lot over there.
Mina: Steve stuff?
- Uh, yeah,
this all started.
more Steves over there.
- Yeah!
Not exactly like ours.
Ano one's telling.are
of supposedly ex-magic...
Steves.
Mina: What happened to them?
Ruby: Some got neglected and crumbled.
Others...
got overrun.
Plike dates with movie starsf
or lottery tickets...
or worse.
- So they just became tacky tourist traps?
- Insert lousy t-shirt joke here.
Ruby: And Steves shut down.
Andin history as a... down
who brought down her own...
Steve.
- Got it.
So, from now on, more than ever.
Sam: Cartoon shark?
It's got me all over it.
- the sunflowers!f out
- And I'll check out the...
carved, woody, blocky thing.
[exhales]
[music playing on speaker]
Leah: Hey!
Welcome home.
Daniel: Hey!
Leah: Sorry I'm late.
Uh.
Daniel: Um.
Ope!
Uh, sorry.
[laughs]
Leah: [sighs]
Uh, how was your trip?
Daniel: Uh, it was a blast!
And I got this for you.
We were in this little town,
anwho knits them.lady
absolutely loved her.
Leah: [laughs]
Daniel: She had this--
Leah: Oh, sorry.
[phone ringing]
Uhh, it's my brother.
I gotta--
Daniel: Okay.
Leah: Hi, Crisanto?
Crisanto: Leah.
Mabuhay.
- Okay ka ba?
Crisanto: Got my results.
Leah: Oh, uhh...
a family thing.
I gotta take care of right away.
- Is everything okay?
Leah: Raincheck?
?
Leah: Uh-huh.
Tell me, tell me!
Shark: Chomp it in!
Sam: [laughs]
Shark: Chomp, chomp, chomp!
Sam: [laughing]
[people shushing in background]
[laughs loudly]
Ohh, man.
- Sam!
Not everybody's enjoying the shark cartoon
as much as you!
- Oh, I can't help it, this is classic cinema!
[laughing] Like--
hey!
?
[laughs loudly]
?
- Weird, why is the lettering on these things backwards?
Kevin: Well, because it's more than just a carving.
Ruby: Hey!
Ye-- uh--
Kevin, you know what those are?
Kevin: Ah, indeed.
Agh, you know the weekly podcast,
"First Impressions: The History of Print"
is a fount of information on such matters.
[laughs]
And, even better...
?
Ruby: Backwards letters?
But what are they for?
Kevin: Watch.
?
Printers in newspapers used these in the old days.
- Wow!
Kevin: Wow is correct!
Now, if you can believe it,
they had to assemble whole books and newspapers
with these little blocks.
Yeah, see?
Rows and rows of them just to make a sentence.
Ruby: Oh, wow, okay, um,
so, what do you think of this one?
Kevin: Oh.
Yeah, I...
I bet that's also from the old Emerald Herald.
Yeah, local paper went belly up in the '20s.
?
Maybe it's an advertising logo?
- The Emerald Herald.
Kevin: Yeah, you know, I,
I think we might have a handful of those
floating around somewhere if, if you're interested.
- A handful?
Sure!
Sounds pretty painless.
?
[indistinct chatter]
Mina: Hi, Lucy!
Lucy: Hey, Mina.
Mina: That smiley face vase.
Lucy: Oh, you see something you like?
Mina: Yes, everything, but that vase.
Do you sell a lot of those?
Lucy: Oh, not since Reg, that is my supplier,
discontinued them.
Mina: Oh.
Lucy: Oh is right.
Mr. Pritchard was the last lucky guy to get them
until Reg turned my smile upside down.
[rueful] Hm-hm-hm-hm.
- Was it for Mrs. Pritchard?
- Who else?
He still buys her sunflowers every week
to put in this vase
and takes them to the seniors' home.
What a marriage.
Mina: [laughs]
And what a lead!
?
[thud]
Ruby: Handful, huh?
Kevin: Have fun, Ruby.
Woman 2: Oo!
That looks like fun.
Ruby: Oh!
[laughs]
- Am I looking at a budding historian?
Ruby: Ish.
Hey!
You're Gabe's mom, right?
From the university?
- Oh, am I that famous?
Oo!
Can I help you with that?
[laughs]
Ruby: You gave a talk to our class
about Emerald's rich and vibrant history.
- Ah!
I probably went on way too long
about census records.
Both: [laugh]
Ruby: Hey, while I have a professional,
what do you make of...
this?
Woman 2: Oh, let me look.
Ah.
Oh, I see.
Ruby: [chuckles]
Woman 2: That looks like a word fragment.
That's a dove.
Oh.
That word could be Libretas.
[gasps]
That's a favorite of old Abbott Radcliffe's.
- Abbott Radcliffe?
He's a legend!
- Couldn't agree with you more.
Sometimes I think I know too much about that man,
I've been researching him for years.
Ruby: So you think that this is a piece that he wrote
in the paper or something.
- Could be.
Man had opinions about everything.
- Wow.
Okay, well, thank you so much.
Woman 2: Okay, listen.
If you have any questions, I'm always available.
You know how to get ahold of me, right?
?
Or you find anything new about him, let me know, okay?
Ruby: Will do!
Thanks.
Um, but, uh, Mrs. Rivers-Snyder,
that portfolio case.
Is that--
- It's not mine,
I borrowed it from a friend,
I'm actually returning it right now.
- [laughs]
- Bye!
?
Ruby: [grunts]
Sam: [laughing]
Ruby: Come on! Sam: Hey, whoa!
?
Ruby: Okay,
let's see who the proud owner of that clue is.
Person of interest A is on the move.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Dad, there you are!
Man 2: Yes, dear!
[laughs]
This way.
Sam: Who owns that portfolio case?
Her dad?
- Maybe.
[sneaky music]
[exhales]
Mina?
Mina: Ruby, what are you doing here?
- Following a clue!
What are you--
Mina: Same deal.
The vase!
I peeked into Mrs. Prichard's room
and she has the last smiley face vase
here in Emerald.
Full of sunflowers!
- Really?
Good job.
Mina: Thank you!
So, the smiley face vase brought us here.
Ruby: Uh, and so did Mrs. Rivers-Snyder
with the portfolio case
after she saw the wooden bloc--
Man 2: Look what you guys forgot yesterday.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Ohhh!
?
Man 2: See when you leave something behind?
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: I was wondering where that was.
Sam: Now the shark appears.
Ruby: It's like a well vision convention here.
Mina: Steve vision convention.
Ruby: [sighs]
- So our wishers are here.
- Yeah, only...
who?
[sighs]
?
Sam, follow that backpack.
Sam: [whispering] On it.
Ruby: It's weird.
She showed up with the portfolio case,
but now she's leaving with the shark backpack?
Mina: Maybe it's her kid's?
- Eh--
okay Sam's got that, let's focus here.
Working hypothesis, go!
- Okay, uhh, someone saw Mrs. Pritchard get sunflowers
and now they want them, too.
- So we just have to narrow it down!
Only, who here wouldn't want sunflowers.
Okay.
Then, let's follow up
on one of our many, many other leads.
?
Starting with Mr. Rivers.
?
Boy 2: Did you see Grandpa?
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Mm-hmm.
Boy 2: [sighs]
I still don't get why he can't live with us
anymore.
Can't we make him?
- [laughs]
Nobody makes your grandpa do anything, JJ.
It's his choice.
He needs special care that we can't give him
right now.
Besides, he likes hanging out with his friends.
JJ: But why can't dad take care of him?
- Well, your dad has a lot of patients
that he has to take care of already.
Hey.
I know it's hard, I miss him, too.
But, this might cheer you up.
JJ: That's where it was!
- Mm-hmm!
You left him when you and dad and he
visit on the weekend.
JJ: Oh, oh no.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Oh gosh.
Sam: Don't worry!
I got that.
Heh.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: [laughs]
Sam: Hey, big guy.
Chomp it in.
Arr!
- Arr, arr!
Both: Ahhh!
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: [laughs]
- You a fan, too?
Sam: The Mortimer Megalodon Cinematic Universe?
Can't get enough!
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Listen,
I have to grab a couple of things.
Sam, do you mind?
- Absolutely!
- Okay.
Be right back.
Sam: Okay, J, see what you got.
?
Mr. Rivers: I'm pretty new here.
But I can't say I mind it much.
Ruby: Oh, uh, that's good news!
Mr. Rivers: Yeah.
See Barry there?
He was a squadron leader, 24th division.
Lieutenant Colonel!
[laughs]
There's so many more.
Believe me, we have plenty to chinwag about around here.
Ruby: Uh, and your daughter?
Mr. Rivers: Well,
that's another good reason to be here.
I'd love to stay with her longer,
but I need more help than she can give me.
Ah.
Plus she has her own life to worry about.
Ruby: Uh, speaking of, what's she working on?
Stuff about Abbott Radcliffe?
- [laughs]
She has been up to her eyeballs
with that man for years.
[laughs]
- [laughs]
Mr. Rivers: Finally finished her big paper.
[laughs]
I'm so proud.
Ruby: I bet you are.
- What a character!
I'll admit, I was a little jealous.
During her research,
the old rapscallion kinda stole her away from me.
- Rapscallion?
Mr. Rivers: [laughs heartily]
Now I'm even talkin' like old Radcliffe!
[laughs]
Sam: Pass me the ball.
I wanna show you something.
?
Now the thing is, there's a secret.
- A secret?
- Fluidity.
You wanna keep a loose grip on your handle.
- That's cool!
Sam: Now you try.
Nice and loose.
There you go, that's the secret!
Oh, yeah, you got it.
JJ: Cool!
Thanks, Sam.
Sam: Anytime.
[sighs]
I wish someone told me that secret when I was a kid.
Uh, speaking of secrets,
you ever wish for a secret tip like that?
Or maybe you wish you could be cool and mysterious
and have a secret?
JJ: Huh?
- Or maybe you collect information that's secret?
- Why are you asking about secrets?
- Oh, I don-- I don't know, just in case, in case, maybe,
you wish you could have one of your own to keep.
- Why would I care about keeping secrets?
- I mean, sometimes, you know, you c--
JJ: My mom's here.
Bye!
Sam: Bye, JJ.
?
[sighs]
Great.
That makes total sense.
A wisher who doesn't want their wish.
?
Crisanto: Finally I get to meet you!
Really sorry for interrupting your date earlier.
Totally my fault.
Daniel: Oh, not a problem.
We've got a, a raincheck on the books?
Leah: Mm-hm.
Daniel: Yeah, okay.
Um, I'm heading out, so, I'll see you soon.
Leah: Great!
I'll go pay for these.
Daniel: Nice meeting you, Cris.
Crisanto: Ah!
[wincing]
- You okay?
Crisanto: Yeah, yeah.
Trick knee from soccer.
Gives out on me sometimes.
So random.
I-I'm good now.
Thanks.
- Okay.
Crisanto: But, um...
uh, but, do me a solid, don't tell Leah about this.
She can be a pro-level worrier.
You know?
- Wha--
yeah, I do know, yeah.
Um, safe with me.
- [laughs]
?
Ruby: The archaic word 'rapscallion' with an accent!
I bet the wisher's Radcliffe himself!
Mina: Another wish from beyond the grave?
Ruby: I know, I love those,
only who does Radcliffe wanna banish?
- I don't know,
probably someone he had a beef with
back in the day.
- More like who didn't he have a beef with?
Creditors, tax collectors, uhh...
- Well, who was after him the most?
- Umm...
whoa.
This book has a whole chapter
on his supposedly hidden fortune?
Apparently his dying words were, "If they only knew."
Mina: As in, where it was hidden?
- I guess.
So!
Who is this rapscallion, so vile and despised
that your banishment extends beyond the grave?
Mina: Ruby, you do realize
all these people are no longer with us,
right?
Including Radcliffe?
- Yeah.
It makes no sense.
So, any luck with the sunflowers?
Mina: No!
She loves sunflowers!
She loves sunflowers, they all love sun-- flowers.
Mr. Rivers: Oh, Eleanor!
How are you?
My daughter left this for you earlier.
That's a fine--
Mina: Ruby, the portfolio case.
- Yeah, turn me back around!
Mina: Oh!
Mr. Rivers: What's in it?
Eleanor: My great-grandmother's letters.
I loaned them to her for her Radcliffe research.
Thank you!
Mr. Rivers: Oh, you're welcome!
- Ruby, this is so weird.
The portfolio case it's...
Mrs. Pritchard's?
Ruby: Is she our last wisher?
But she already has sunflowers.
Mina: I know, this doesn't make any sense.
Ruby: Sam found the other wisher,
and he doesn't care about secrets.
And Radcliffe wants to banish someone
who's already dead?
Mina: It's like we have all the wishers.
- Complete with a bunch of question marks.
?
Ruby: Okay, um, Radcliffe.
Mina: What good does his wish do him
now that he's dead?
Ruby: Uhh, Jelani?
Sam: Why would a kid who doesn't care about secrets
want a secret?
Ruby: Mrs. Pritchard.
Mina: Okay, why would she wish for sunflowers
when she gets them regularly?
Ruby: Ugh, I know, it's so frustrating.
[sighs]
Sam: I mean, all the wishes seem backwards
and we still haven't found--
Ruby: The symbol.
Mina: Yes, it obviously links up all three wishes--
Ruby: No, no, the symbol!
?
Mina: Ohh. Sam: Whoa.
[desk scraping floor]
?
Ruby: Maybe there's something under it or something?
[music builds]
? [effortful breaths]
Nothing.
Maybe there's more of them
and they make a pattern or something?
?
Sam: Oof! Mina: Ope!
Both: Sorry!
Sam: You okay?
Mina: Yeah.
?
Sam: Huh.
Mina: [gasps]
Look!
There's another one.
Ruby: Oh!
Mina: Do you think it means something?
Ruby: It has to!
Why else would they be here?
?
Ha...
Look!
The elevator leads to the tunnels, so--
Sam: So maybe there are more down there.
Ruby: Let's split up.
- Ah!
Can I please come with you to the tunnels?
I had the awkwardest conversation
with Jelani ever and I--
- Okay, okay.
I'll see where I can get with Jelani.
You guys, check in often.
[door rattles closed]
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Hurry, hun.
JJ: Ugh, not in the mood.
- Hey.
I know you're upset, we'll talk about that later.
But right now we need to go and tell Grandpa the news.
?
- What news?
Leah: Well, knowing that story,
I'm going to treasure my Irish sweater even more.
Thank you.
- You're most welcome.
So a lot's been going on!
I see your brother's in town.
He seems like a good guy.
Leah: Yeah, so, my beloved but impossible little brother
has MS.
- Really?
Leah: He had a flare up and couldn't work.
So he stayed with me for a while
so I can help him.
But the other day...
- The phone call.
Leah: Yeah.
Good news.
They were afraid he had a really severe form of MS.
But, his blood tests were negative so...
- So good news!
Leah: Yeah!
If it had gone the other way...
it would've been really hard for him.
Plus I'd have to move to the city,
to his place, so.
You know, his specialists are there
so I could take care of him.
- But now?
- One phone call
and both our lives are back to normal.
- I do like the sound of that.
- We're just so lucky.
They say he may not have another flare up for years
or even ever.
[laughs]
I gotta tell ya, I was so worried.
- Yeah.
Glad he's on the mend.
?
[epic music]
?
Ruby: There!
Sam: It's like it's showing the way or something.
?
?
Ruby: There's another one here, too.
Sam: Here as well.
[water dripping]
Ruby: Sam?
?
[grunts]
These tunnels go on forever.
Sam: So we crawl into this mysterious, murky void
without knowing where it leads?
Ruby: Absolutely.
Sam: Wait!
What if Radcliffe was trying to get rid of people?
Maybe all this goes straight to a trap.
Ruby: What, like,
he was leading a rapscallion to their untimely doom?
How?
Sam: I don't know.
Poison arrows, spike-filled pit, tigers.
Ruby: Tigers?!
Sam: Okay, not tigers.
Ruby: [sigh]
?
Ruby: There's only one way to find out.
Sam: [sighs]
Ruby: [grunting]
?
Sam: [grunts]
Ruby: Another symbol, straight ahead.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Dad, please give it some thought.
Mr. Rivers: Nooo!
Emerald is my home!
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: I know!
But we all knew
this was gonna be a possibility.
Plus, this position could take me through
to retirement.
Mr. Rivers: And Iman is good with this?
- You know Iman, he's a hotshot cardiologist.
Any hospital would love to have him.
- Still, you could commute.
- Two hours both ways?
That's impossible.
Mr. Rivers: [sighs]
I don't wanna talk about this anymore.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: I don't either,
but we have to.
Ruby: [grunting]
Sam: [grunts]
- Here's another one!
Mina: Popular Emerald quilt patterns.
1840-1890.
Huh.
[phone ringing]
Sam?
Sam: Mina, can you hear me?
We found more stars.
Tons of them.
Mina: Really?!
Amazing!
Sam: They're all over the tunnels.
Mina: I found one, too.
Sam: You did?
Mina: On a quilt at the seniors' residence.
Ruby: On a quilt?
Mr. Rivers: There must be something more
you could research here.
Anything!
- Dad, we have mined it all,
there is nothing left to research!
It's been a great two years but...
[sighs]
Look, we are moving for this new opportunity.
It'd be nice if you came with us.
Mr. Rivers: Okay.
Well, you know I have my own--
- Did you hear that?
Ruby: Yeah, we heard.
Okay, we need to figure this out.
The Rivers family, the quilt, the tunnels,
they're connected, but how?
Mina?
We're going deep.
Wish us luck.
Mina: Good luck.
[sighs]
?
Ruby: [grunting]
Sam: [grunts]
?
- Sam?
Up ahead.
Sam: Wait.
[grunts]
?
Ruby: There's something up there.
?
[grunting]
?
?
You okay?
Sam: Yeah.
?
- Look.
Sam: What's all this?
Ruby: Good question.
?
[papers rustling]
- They're thank you notes.
To Mister Josiah, thank you.
Mister Logan.
Mister...
Mister Cato.
Look.
Ruby: To Mister Abbott Radcliffe.
Thank you...
for helping us escape?
Helping us escape.
We know that he helped Evelyn Cunningham
but this is way bigger than one girl.
Sam: Radcliffe was up to way more than we thought.
Ruby: Only...
what?
Paula: How was the Emerald Isle?
Daniel: Good, good, yeah, yeah, it was lots of fun,
family, yeah, you know?
Paula: Good!
How's Ruby?
- Good, yeah, she's fine, she's-- we're all good.
Uhh, listen.
Do you know anything about MS?
Paula: Uhh, well, sure, yeah.
Daniel: Um...
[clears throat]
would somebody's legs go out from under them
because of it?
Paula: Yeah.
Knee-buckling, it's, it's very common.
Especially during a flare up,
muscle weakness is a big part of MS.
Someone you know?
- Uhh, just a friend of a friend.
- Ah.
That's a tough one.
I'm sorry.
Hey, I'm, I'm, I'm here if you need me.
- Thank you.
Good to see you.
?
Sam: Hey, Ruby.
What's this?
Ruby: Oh.
Maybe another quilt?
?
Sam: Wow, like what Mina saw.
Ruby: Um.
There.
The last one?
Sam: What do you think's on the other side?
?
Ruby: [grunting]
Looks like....
[grunts]
?
[wood creaking]
[crash]
?
Sam: [laughs]
Ruby: Not the end of the road.
?
[keyboard clicking]
Mrs. Pritchard: Fascinating, isn't it?
Mina: Uh, yeah.
- Who knew a silent quilt could say so much?
- [inhales]
What do you mean?
Mrs. Pritchard: The patterns!
You see this one?
It's called the bears paw!
- And what's this one?
- That is the North Star,
and that was once a secret direction marker.
Mina: For what?
- For the Underground Railroad!
- Really?
- Really!
Don't take my word for it.
A certain local historian has a whole video series online!
- Whoa.
Thank you, Mrs. Pritchard.
Rivers-Snyder... Underground Railroad.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Coded quilts.
The story goes
that a coalition of folk from Emerald
would hang these quilts in their windows
to show the way.
They were abolitionists
and included my own ancestor,
Josiah Rivers.
They did this to mark the route
to help freedom-seekers find their way north
to escape enslavement.
Historians are still looking for solid proof,
but the story has been in my family for generations.
And there's no question of the bravery
that this required.
Imagine what it felt like to see these symbols
and know that they were on the right path.
- Can you believe it?
All that hidden in a quilt.
- It all makes sense.
And, uh, the trap door led us outside
to the middle of the woods
and, get this,
uh, we found the star pattern
under 150 years of moss on a boulder.
The path kept going!
Mina: To a safe haven.
Ruby: Yeah, it's all starting to come together.
- It's totally coming together.
Mina: And the best part is it's an easy fix.
- I'm listening.
Mina: Well, Jelani doesn't wanna move,
but they have to for his mom's work, right?
- Right.
Ruby: Right.
Mina: So, he wishes for a secret
so his mom will have something to research
so they can stay, yeah?
Ruby and Sam: Yeah?
- So, we tell them about the tunnels and boom!
Wish granted.
- [laughs]
Oh, that would definitely help solve Jelani's wish.
Sam: Yeah, completely.
His mom's a Radcliffe expert
and his connection to the Underground Railroad
would be an important research topic.
- And it would help solve Radcliffe's wish, too.
Everyone called him a rapscallion.
- Yeah?
Ruby: But his dying words were, "If they only...
...knew."
And it wasn't about treasure.
But the fact that he was actually
secretly a, a good guy.
- So he wished to banish his rapscallion rep.
Mina: Which explains why all this came up now,
all these wishes had to be done together!
Sam: The well's got game.
- Yeah, it's all so perfect.
Sam: Sure is. Mina: Yeah, it's perfect.
- We're not doing it.
Sam and Mina: What?
Sam: Wh--
Ruby, what do you mean?!
Mina: Where are you going?
Sam: Ruby, what are you saying?
Ruby, wait!
Ruby: Uh, Sam, I--
Mina: Hold on a second.
Ruby: What?
Mina: What do you mean we're not doing it?
Sam: We have to do it.
Ruby: Look.
I-If we tell people about the tunnels
then they'll find the hangout!
And if they find the hangout
they're gonna wonder what we're doing up there.
And then one thing leads to another and...
I don't know.
Mina: What do you mean you don't know?
- Look there are so many ways for a Steve to be destroyed,
we, we, we can't...
risk it, we need another way.
Mina: What if there isn't another way?!
Sam: Ruby, this is important.
Okay, it's the Underground Railroad,
it's not our call to keep it to ourselves,
it wouldn't be right.
Ruby: Look, I'm not saying that we don't share it,
just not right now.
It's still gonna be important 20 years from now.
Mina: Ruby.
You know this feels right, and it grants the wishes.
Sam: And you know what happens
when the wishes don't get granted.
Ruby: It's my decision, okay!!
?
I'm the...
Steve-keeper.
?
Seb: Sooo...
Why is there an iceberg in the middle of the stairs?
Mina: Uh, Sam and I
had a minor disagreement with Ruby.
It, it'll be okay, it's no big deal.
Seb: Seems like no big deal.
What is this over?
Was it that Irish guy?
- Yeah, actually.
Seb: Typical.
Friends are always tight
until the boyfriend enters the picture.
Been there.
But, I mean, you, you worked it out, right?
It's gonna be okay?
Mina: Uhh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, hopefully.
It'll be okay, yeah.
Leah: Things really feel like they're looking up, you know?
Especially with Crisanto doing so well.
- Uhh, yeah, actually, um, about that.
There's um.
Uhhh.
Leah: What is it?
Daniel: Um.
Look, there's no easy way to say this but...
your brother may not be telling you everything
- I'm listening.
- Um.
I didn't know what it meant till I talked to Paula later,
but I saw your brother's legs go out from under him
when we were at the hardware store
the other day.
- But...
they said he fully recovered from that flare up.
It doesn't make sense unless...
?
...he's covering up.
Why is he always so selfless?!
Daniel: Yeah, look, I know that it may seem that, uh--
wait, selfless?
Leah: Crisanto doesn't want his illness
to mess with my life.
He knows I'll dive in to help him,
so he wants me to think everything is fine.
?
[sighs]
I never saw the test results.
He just told me about them.
I have to talk to him.
?
I should probably-- raincheck?
Again?
Daniel: Uhh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, take as much time as you need, it's a lot.
?
Leah: [breathes shakily]
?
You're a good one, Dan.
The timing couldn't be worse, could it?
Does it mean what I think it means?
It's just too much at once.
?
Mina: That Ruby,
I can't believe her sometimes.
Sam: Look!
Mina: No, you look, she's being unreasonable!
Sam: [whispering] I mean look there.
Snyders.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyders: Uh-huh, yeah, okay!
He-- we should be settled in by then.
Monday is as good a start day as any.
Nice to hear.
Mina: Hey, Gabe.
Jelani.
What's wrong?
Gabe: Well, moving company's booked.
Mom and Dad say
JJ and I are supposed to pack up our stuff.
JJ: Just what's necessary.
- JJ had a pretty good line.
"The only thing not necessary is moving."
[laughs]
JJ: [groans]
Moving's the worst.
I'd so rather stay here.
Mrs. Rivers-Snyder: Yeah, of course.
Now that that piece
on that ne'er-do-well, Radcliffe is being published,
it's on to something...
new and exciting.
Hm?
Yeah, interesting man but, but a woeful legacy.
Daniel: What's buggin' you?
Ruby: Okay.
It's the wish.
Wishes, actually.
'Member what Finn said?
How disaster strikes all at once
when a well gets exposed?
Daniel: Yeah, for a non-well-keeper
he sure knows his stuff.
- Yeah.
So.
Can't keep everything secret, can I?
I mean, what do I decide to give away?
- I had a similar thing.
Really weighed the pros and cons,
looked at what my motivation was.
- My motivation is to protect the well.
Daniel: So it's about fear
over what might happen to the well and to you?
[plates clatter softly]
- No!
It's not fear.
Okay, it's...
a lot of fear.
- So it's totally fear.
Ruby: Yes, but sometimes
fear keeps you from doing stupid things!
And-- anyway, there's a whole part to the wish
I haven't figured out yet.
Mrs. Pritchard wished for sunflowers
and I still have no idea what to do with that.
Like, what does a wish for sunflowers even mean?
[scrubbing]
Daniel: Maybe she just wants sunflowers.
?
- Maybe she just wants sunflowers.
?
Hm.
?
- [sighs]
Ruby: Um.
- Ruby, hello!
- Hi, Mrs. Pritchard.
- What lovely flowers!
They look just like mine!
Ruby: Yeah, uh, would you look at that.
Mrs. Pritchard: Oh-ho-ho-ho-ho, the vase!
You know, every week
I wish that my husband would bring me sunflowers
for this vase.
Ruby: Every week?
- And every week he brings them!
Beautiful man, grants my wish over and over.
And you know what?
Still a thrill.
Every time.
Because it means we're still kickin'.
We still love each other.
That's our secret, Ruby O'Reilly.
Ruby: Your secret?
- To a long, happy marriage.
And who are these for, sweetie?
- Oh, um, uh, they were actually for you.
- For me?
How lovely.
My goodness, I'm doubly blessed.
What's the occasion?
- I just thought you would like them.
- Ohh, I do.
In fact,
it's perfect.
You see, I always like to share when I can
but there's never enough to go around and...
I can't have Langston thinking
I wanna give away his gift, can I?
- Scandalous.
Both: [laugh]
- So, with your permission, should we spread these around
a little bit?
- Permission granted.
Mrs. Pritchard: [laughs]
?
Ruby: Spread these around a little bit?
Mrs. Pritchard: Thank you, dear.
Ruby: Yeah, that's absolutely okay.
Because now it all makes sense.
Mrs. Pritchard made the same wish
she always made.
And it always came true for her.
Well or no well.
Her husband made sure of that.
And now she gets a chance to go one step further.
To make one small gesture.
But one that ripples.
From one face lighting up to the next.
And that's what the well has always been about.
Changing lives in ways we might not ever see.
So why let it stop here?
?
[phone rings]
Mina: Ruby, hey.
Sam: What's up?
- You guys were right.
What do you say
we finish this triple-wish magic hat trick?
Mina: We're going to tell her?
?
- We're gonna tell her.
[sighs]
For you.
[laughs]
?
- Hey.
You wanna hear a secret?
We found the tunnels, and you guys can stay longer
until your mom--
?
Ruby: Kindness has its own momentum.
And when the secrets spread,
some amazing kind of joy spread right along with it.
?
Did I do the right thing?
Am I taking good enough care of the well?
Yes, no, maybe?
Who knows?
?
But I do know that these secrets,
like our small, kind inspirations
are meant to be shared.
Bringing people together.
Somehow... connecting.
This secret now spoken.
Finding wings.
