Ruby: Previously on Ruby and the Well...
What's the first thing you're gonna do
when we get there?
Daniel: Find a bathroom.
Ruby: I am going to climb a tree.
?
[heavily breathing]
[whoosh]
Girl 1: I wish she was out of the way.
Ruby: What rotten human being
would want to get rid of my mom's memory?
My wonderful mom?
- Someone who likes your dad,
that's who.
Leah : I love that, I think it'll work.
- Ruby.
How are you...
Ruby: Hi, Dad.
Hi, Ms. Miranda.
[clap]
[echoing] I wish that Leah Miranda
was out of the way!
[stone cracking]
What is happening?
[gasp]
[thud]
I have this gift, this amazing gift, and...
[emotionally] I just don't want to mess up.
[sobs]
I got the wrong wisher because I pushed you away.
And you want to know if I can handle all of it,
if I can balance my equation.
The answer is...
I don't know.
?
[shouting] Ah, that's the most amazing news
I've ever heard!
We're going to Ireland, are you serious?
Daniel: I said those exact words
a half hour ago.
Ruby: [chuckles]
- Wait, where are our passports?
- Cabinet?
- Yes.
- Uh, so when do we go?
- Two weeks.
- For how long?
- A month.
- [gasp] How can we afford this?
- Grandpa's O's air miles.
Ruby: Huh!
Daniel: Aha, found them!
And all I have to do now is find someone
to watch the place while we're gone.
- No way, wow that's, uh-
I mean, we haven't had a vacation like this in...
ever.
Daniel: We should dance a jig.
Ruby: We don't know how!
Both: [giggling]
Daniel: We'll learn when we get there!
Both: [laughing]
- It'll be interesting to see what Dad's been up to
while he's there.
- Yeah, I cannot wait to do this.
Although, I should probably check in with the...
- Yeah.
Ruby: After the last wish,
there's something I need to say.
But don't stop jigging or hopping
or whatever that was!
[Irish music plays]
Hi.
After what happened...
I just wanted to say...
you wanted me
to take a deeper look at myself.
And I did.
Did I like it?
Some of it, but...
not all.
But as usual, I learned a few things, so...
thanks, I think.
And it looks like
I might be going on a big trip soon,
so I was hoping we could squeeze in another wish
before I go?
Just to, you know,
show we're still good?
[exhales]
[magical chiming]
Thank you.
[exhale of relief]
[magical whoosh]
[water ripples]
?
[whoosh]
[screech]
[whoosh]
?
Woman 1: I wish I was the new well keeper.
Ruby: [gasps]
What...
was that just...
[breathing heavily]
[theme music plays]
?
?
Mina: What do you mean you got fired?!
- The wish?
I wish I was the new well keeper.
- Big deal.
It'll be fine.
- Sam!
- What are you talking about?
- It's just the well doing it's well thing.
You know, it gives us a wish that seems impossible
and you figure it out,
and it's fine.
- I, uh-
- I mean he's not entirely wrong.
- [scoffs]
Sam: So we do that thing we do
when we look at it in another way.
Here's why it doesn't mean you're fired...
How about you start?
- [scoffs]
- Oookay, so the well has rules
about who can be the new well keeper, right?
So it has to be someone in your family
who also lives in the area.
- Yeah, and you guys are it.
No other O'Reilly's around for miles.
The closest O'Reilly's are the ones
you're going to visit in Ireland, right?
- Yeah, I guess.
But we also know that with the well
you can never make easy assumptions.
- What else could the wish mean?
- Hey, d-d-did the wish clearly say your well?
- No, no, no, no, it just showed me water,
but that could be from any well!
And it didn't say anything about magic either!
- Okay, so what if
I wish I was the new well keeper
was about a whole other well?
- Huh.
- Maybe somebody wants to be the new keeper
of a normal, not-magic well.
- So if it is another new well,
then we just have to find it!
[chuckles]
[school bell rings]
Daniel: Type G power adapters,
guess what that means!
- Ireland, wow!
What's the plan?
Daniel: You know, see the sights, the family.
Might be a jig or two involved.
Ava: Okay!
Leah: Ireland?!
Did I get that right?
Daniel: Hey, yeah!
I'm sorry about leaving you that cryptic message.
- So exciting!
Daniel: I know!
I'm excited and Ruby's excited and...
it's also, you know,
not without its drawbacks too.
I'm gonna...
- Me too.
Uh- guess I better get some stamps, huh?
[chuckles]
Daniel: Hey, these are good for overseas.
- Thanks.
?
Maybe I'll get two.
?
- Hi!
- [annoyed] Hi.
- What's wrong?
- Nothing.
- Are you sure?
'Cause you look like your team just lost.
You know, if you had a team.
[locker closes]
- Mmm.
- What's up?
- I'm ticked at you.
- At me, why?
- Be my partner, meet me for lab!
Sound familiar?
- Lab, right.
- Yeah, guess who showed.
And guess who didn't.
- I'm sorry, it's just that stuff came up and I...
- [scoffing] Stuff comes up a lot.
- I know, but it's...
- I thought you wanted to hang out more.
'Cause you said you wanted to hang out more.
Seb, you said.
We should hang out more!
- I do want that!
- But you've got secrets.
And I don't know what or why.
All I know is they involve Ruby and Sam and not me.
- Okay, I know, but sometimes...
- Exactly.
- Let me fix this, please.
Can we hang out after school?
Mr. Lutes: Mina!
Mina: Mr. Lutes.
- Hey, Seb.
I hear you, Sam, and Ruby
want a little after-school science.
- We... do?
Mr. Lutes: Ruby told me that you guys want a tour
of Emerald's underground aquifers.
I'd be delighted.
- Oh wow, yes!
That would be great, thank you!
- But you just said you were gonna meet me.
- [exhales] I know.
I'm sorry, raincheck?
Mr. Lutes: Seb, come on!
You could use a little more enthusiasm
like these kids.
Hey, idea!
Why don't you come along?
- [gasps] Uh, m-
- No, I'm good.
Thanks anyway.
- Nothing gets the blood pumping
like a little after-school hydrological survey!
Right, Mina?
Mina: Uh, mhmm.
Mr. Lutes: Yeah, don't worry.
We'll find you guys a well in no time.
?
- Uh-
?
[crows cawing]
- Minerals.
It's a good start.
Sam: Yeah, could indicate evaporated ground water,
which is evidence of a potential reservoir
underneath.
- Yes, how did you know that?
- Oh I didn't,
I was just reading off your laptop.
Ruby: So, what do you think?
- A well, here!
[laughs]
You have no idea how long I've wished for that.
[laughs]
Right now I truck my water in.
- Sounds difficult.
Woman 2: You kidding?
I have a kid with laundry,
an aging mum with laundry,
and if that water truck is ever late,
it's game over, the laundry wins.
Ruby: Well, let's hope we can help.
- Hey!
- Unbelievable,
so if we pull this off, then bam!
New well, complete with a new well keeper.
- Yeah and by building a new well,
we're saving a family which is so magic well.
- It's perfect!
Mr. Lutes: Good news!
My maps indicate
there is a potential aquifer out there.
But there's bad news too.
- Like what?
- Like 300 feet of rock between it and us.
- Well, that's fantastic!
Mina and Sam: Huh?
- Well, it's never easy.
Which means we're exactly on the right track.
[chuckles]
Okay, I know you said
building a well would be hard,
but how hard?
- Well, first we need to get geological analysis.
Soil type, rock type, that kind of thing.
- And?
- Happy to help,
but they need power out here,
so you need an electrician.
- Okay.
- Then there's permits, so many permits.
- Uh huh.
Mr. Lutes: And then...
you actually need to dig the thing itself
which, unless you have an in with a top contractor...
Sam: Ruby.
- We have all that.
Ruby: [chuckles] I know we do.
So now we just need to put it into action.
Okay, everyone have their assignments?
- Call everyone we know.
- Inform the entire universe.
- Let's do this!
?
[engine revs]
?
Ruby: Okay, how we doin'?
Mina: Uh, still trying to reach him, one minute.
- What about you, Sam?
- Well, you know my mom.
Good cause, tough ask,
dropped everything.
She's down at the permit office
with a stack of pies right now.
- Nice!
Mina, anything?
- Uh, do you know when he'll be back?
I've been calling everywhere
trying to get a hold of him all day and...
no, I haven't tried that number!
But I'll try now, thank you so much.
- What about you?
Ruby: Uh, okay, I talked to the contractor
and I didn't even get out the whole question.
Ralph Brockton just volunteered on the spot!
- Nice!
Ruby: [giggles]
Mina: Oh, hi!
I'm sorry, uh, I'm looking for Mike LaFontaine?
Uh...
oh, it is?
You are?
Wow!
Thanks so much, bye.
[exhales]
Yeah, I couldn't reach Mr. LaFontaine.
He's out on a job.
- So, he's busy.
- Busy doing our job!
Running power out to the site.
- [gasps] This wish is unstoppable!
Cheers!
- Cheers!
Ruby: Alrighty.
?
Daniel: Hey, so bad news about our suitcases.
Mice, but look!
I found these.
It'll work for the trip, yeah?
Ruby: [gasps] Yup, yup, yuppers!
- I haven't seen anyone this excited
about a suitcase with broken wheels.
- Well, I'm in a great mood.
Two days and Mr. Pritchard's already
got half the land cleared,
Ms. Price got greasy with the permits,
and the Brockton's brought in all the big machines.
This new well is totally on its way!
Daniel: I still think it's a crazy coincidence
that somebody wished for a well.
Ruby: Yeah, basically.
- What do you mean basically?
Ruby: Well, it wasn't that exactly.
Um, they wished to be a new well keeper.
- What?
That's not what you told me.
To be a new well keeper?
[orange juice pours]
- Okay, the new well keeper.
- You sure you got this one figured out right?
- Pretty sure, yeah!
- Pretty sure is good enough?
Ruby: Actually, yeah!
Because it totally fits the pattern.
It's more than just a well to them,
it saved the whole family!
- That does seem pretty well-like.
Ruby: Hmm.
It is, a classic!
And it was super easy actually.
- Okay.
?
- Maybe too easy?
?
Seb: Hey, Kev.
Do you have any idea what Mina, Sam, and Ruby
do together all the time?
- Not really.
- Too bad.
- But I have theories.
- Theories?
- Indeed.
Now we all like a good mystery, correct?
Yet real-life riddles
rarely compare to those collected
in the library's hallowed stacks, do they?
- I... guess not.
Kevin: Except with those three kids.
Like a riddle,
wrapped in an enigma wearing high tops.
So, care to step
through the door of mystery with me?
- No.
- I see, yet it has
been one tantalizing clue after another,
has it not?
- [scoffs]
- But you couldn't care less.
- Exactly.
- Guess I'll be going then.
Seb: Wait.
- Hmm.
[Irish music plays]
?
Ruby: Hey, Ms. Janacek.
Ms. Janacek: You'll never guess!
- Is that the sound of flowing water that I hear?
[chuckles]
Great!
So all that's left is the plumbing hook up
and that's all set for next week.
Ms. Janacek: Has anyone ever told you you're an angel?
- Oh, don't thank me, thank this town!
When it gets motivated, a lot can happen.
Ms. Janacek: Thanks!
- Aw, no problem!
I'm just glad to help.
Ms. Janacek: Bye!
- Bye!
[pages rustle]
Ruby: Another successful wish for the log book.
That's weird.
?
What is going on?
[high-pitched magic chime]
- Another wish, already?
?
[magical whoosh]
- Whoa!
[pants]
What is it?
What do you want now?
I did the wish.
[magical buzzing]
Woman 1: I wish I was the new well keeper.
[magical buzz]
Ruby: Hannah Eloise Callaghan.
[gasping]
Wisher a-and the new well keeper?
[tense music plays]
Sam: 'Kay, new wrinkle.
Mina: Wrinkle?!
Understate much, this could be the end!
Sam: [scoffs]
The end.
Drama much?
Ruby: No, no, she's right.
Just when I thought I was finding my balance.
Too little too late I guess.
- No, I'm not buying it.
We did the wish, end of story.
- [exhales] Maybe we didn't do the wish.
- What?
- What do you mean?
- Well, one thing was bugging me
the whole time we were helping Shirley.
Her voice.
- Did it match the wisher?
Ruby: Yes, I-I-
no, I-I just, I wasn't sure.
Look, we should've checked in with all of the clues
but I just wanted it to be something else besides...
you know.
Mina: But, still,
there has to be a way around this.
I refuse to believe you could be replaced.
- Maybe there's still a way out.
Tricky well, remember?
- Yeah, yes, uh, okay,
we just need to find the loophole.
- And maybe we have the clues to find it.
Let's start with SV-12.
Ruby: Okay, it was sort of on yellowing paper,
old-style like a typewriter.
- So it could be a library book cover.
Sam: Could be from the curiosity cabinet.
Ruby: Well, either way that's the library.
Let's go.
Mina: Okay.
?
Seb: So what's this then?
Kevin: Field notes.
Plus I admit I allowed myself one pie chart.
[laughs]
Don't you just love math graphics?
- No.
- Okay, well, this one shows
how often our trio has a whispered conversation.
- Yeah, I noticed that, but how did you...
- I have excellent hearing
due to my parents deep distrust of headphones.
And I've noticed when they whisper,
yeah, a high frequency of certain words.
Seb: Such as?
- [exhales] Well, wish, no way, yes way,
shhh I think Kevin's listening.
- Well and wish, huh?
Kevin: Yeah, now put those together
and millions of sentences can be formed, right?
From the innocent like,
well, Mina, I wish I had a donut,
to the not so innocent like, uh...
Seb: I wish we hadn't unleashed
that well-intentioned but lethal alien life-form.
Kevin: It's like you're reading my mind.
[chuckles]
We should riff on theories.
Yeah, I mean they could literally be up to anything.
- Speaking of.
- Big surprise, whispering.
- We're in a library, Kevin.
- Right.
?
- Not a book.
Sam: Okay.
[grunts] It's stuck.
Medical equipment!
SV-12, here.
Ruby: Um...
[camera clicks]
what is it?
- I have no idea.
But I think I know who might.
Let's go.
?
Kevin: So, do we follow them?
Seb: Kevin, you're a great guy
and I like you.
But sometimes
you have to deal with things realistically.
Which is exactly what I'm going to do.
?
Ruby: Dr. "Sawbone" Snyder?
Sam: Used to live in the city.
Operated on me when I was little.
[knocking]
- It's open!
[door opens]
- Good afternoon, Wally...
[chuckles] Well!
It's either Sam Price
or old Mr. Talbot took my exercise plan
very seriously.
- [chuckles]
Hey, Dr. Snyder.
Dr. Snyder: What brings you here, Sammy?
How's the ticker?
Sam: It's fine, Doc.
- Good.
- These are two of my friends,
Ruby and Mina.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Dr. Snyder: Ladies.
- They wanted to meet you and your collection.
Dr. Snyder: Oh, sure!
Sure, check it out.
Dr. Snyder and Sam: [whispering indistinctly]
- There it is.
Mina: Ruby, be careful.
- Um.
Uh, Dr. Snyder?
Dr. Snyder: Yes.
Ruby: What is this?
Dr. Snyder: Uh, that is a minor miracle,
a tonsillotome
used to help extract inflamed, painful tonsils.
And funnily enough,
this was invented by a chap right here in Emerald.
- A local connection.
- Yes, word is a young doctor slash inventor
saved the life of a young woman in town
with this device.
The two of them fell in love
and off they went to California
to be married and find their fortune.
They even named this after him.
It's called the Callaghan.
- Callaghan.
[magical whoosh]
Uh, just curious, Dr. Snyder.
Who did he marry?
- One of the O'Reilly girls.
The granddaughter of our very own town founder.
?
[door closes]
- Callaghan, did you hear that?
- Yeah, who married an O'Reilly.
- That means you are related.
- I know, I know, I know, I know.
- But still, California.
That's like crazy far away so we're safe, right?
Ruby: I hope so but still,
we're not done yet.
Sam: The little bike.
- We have those at the store.
?
Okay, here we go.
[mouse clicks]
Any of those look familiar?
- [gasps] That's it!
Mina: An R. Callaghan.
That name again.
- Uh, where do they live?
[mouse clicking]
- Ashton Hills.
Ruby: [exhales]
So, we know that the Callaghans
are related to my family by marriage
and that some of them live out in Ashton Hills,
which isn't very far away but still out of town.
- Right, so...
Ruby: But it's not like
they have a well in the backyard like we do.
- Right, so...
Ruby: So when it shimmers, I can see it right away.
How is someone in Ashton Hills
gonna be able to see the shimmer?
Mina: Which could be the loophole...
Ruby: Which could be the loophole,
because there's no way someone that far away
would be able to answer the wishes!
Mina: Because they wouldn't be able to see...
Ruby: Because they wouldn't be able to see the shimmers!
So, there is another way to interpret this wish,
we just haven't figured it out yet!
Thanks, Mina!
- Happy to help!
Seb: Mina.
?
Seb: Hi, Ruby.
Bye, Ruby.
- [huffs]
- Okay Mina, spill.
You guys have been sneaking around
and hanging out with my dad.
My dad.
Why?
- Uh, it was just for fun.
- Okay, now I know you're lying.
I thought you liked me.
- [exhales]
I do, it's just the well takes so much of our time...
- The well?
- No, I meant-
[exhales] well, it's just so busy with school
and the store and...
Hi ma'am, how may I help you?
Seb: Yup, busy, busy Mina.
[footsteps]
Daniel: [humming]
- You're in a good mood.
Why so happy?
- You know, life in general.
Plus, turns out
one of the biggest hurdles to our trip
has vanished.
- Yeah?
Daniel: Your granddad came through for us,
got a call from relatives I didn't even know we had.
Did you know that we are distantly related
to a family in Ashton Hills?
- [nervously] Yeah, I heard about that.
Daniel: Yeah, the Callaghans.
Dad found them in one of his genealogy searches
and made friends and...
- [exhales]
Daniel: long story short,
they're gonna be staying here while we're away.
- The Callaghans staying here?
Daniel: Yeah, lucky us.
- Steps from the well?
[gasping heavily]
Sam: I don't get it,
these Callaghans are strangers.
Mina: And now they'll be staying at your house?
How did this even happen?
Ruby: Grandpa O being Grandpa O made a plan
without asking anyone as usual.
- [exhales] That's your granddad.
Ruby: Yeah, I just didn't have the heart
to tell my dad.
He was all,
"Yay, one more thing off my plate!"
Which means everything's working out great
for the new well keeper.
- Maybe not,
maybe the well's just being really tricky this time.
We need to think like a magic well.
- If you told me five years ago
that sentence would make sense...
Mina: Like, like maybe the new well keeper
will be so bad at wish granting
that it will want you back.
- Hmm, okay.
Okay, well we do have an address.
Maybe we should track down this Callaghan
and see if she's serious about the wish.
And keep an eye open for loopholes.
?
Mina: So many cars!
What's going on over here, like a party or something?
Ruby: Uh, this is the place.
[exhales]
Sam: All right.
[footsteps]
[door opens]
[crowd indistinctly talking]
Mina: Okay so,
Hannah Eloise Callaghan, where are you?
- It's probably someone our age.
There.
Hi, excuse me.
Are you Hannah Eloise Callaghan?
Girl 1: What?
Um no, of course not.
Sam: Do you know where she is then?
- Um...
yeah, sure, she's right over there.
- Thank you.
Girl 1: Yeah.
[somber music plays]
?
Mina: Ruby, does this mean the wish is over?
'Cause, I mean,
we can't grant it if she's dead.
- Yeah, uh...
we're too late.
All: We're too late!
Sam: Sorry.
Mina: Sorry.
- Well that's our loophole, let's get out of here.
Ruby: That might be the loophole
but we still don't know what the wish actually means.
Uh, hi, um, I-
Girl 1: Hey sorry, I didn't catch your name.
- Oh, I-I'm Ruby O'Reilly.
- You're Ruby?
Mom!
Mom, get over here.
This is Liam O'Reilly's granddaughter.
Guests: Oh!
- Uh...
?
Girl 1: And your grandpa would not stop talking
about you or Ireland.
- I-I'm really excited to see it.
And to meet the rest of the family.
Woman 3: It's just too bad you missed Old Hannah.
Ruby: It is and um, my condolences.
But I was wondering, uh,
is there anything that she might've wished for,
uh, before she passed?
- Um, not really.
She was in a good place.
She was a positive force and she knew it.
- Old Hannah really connected the family.
She kinda stood on the shoulders
of the California Callaghans before her.
- And became the shoulders for all of us who came after.
Ruby: Uh, y-you keep saying Old Hannah.
Is there a not-old Hannah?
- Yeah, named after her.
- So there's another Hannah Eloise Callaghan?
Woman 3: Yup, she's so great.
She's not here but you'll meet her,
you know, when her family housesits for you.
Girl 1: You'll love her.
- Oh...
[awkwardly laughs]
Uh, yeah, I, uh-
I, I should be getting back,
but it was great to, uh-
thanks for everything.
Mina: Thank you.
Sam: Nice to meet you.
Mina: Ruby, I- I know this seems bad, but...
- Yeah?
- But I don't know how to finish that sentence.
- [shakily breathes]
I, um, I-I just gotta go clear my head.
I-I'll see you guys later.
?
Kevin: This is where they always go.
Now, freight elevator's down here
but I never see them in the library
after they go in.
- Maybe there's a secret floor or something?
Come on.
?
- Nothing, just library and more library.
- Ugh.
You know, they could have a special override key.
- [skeptically] Mmm...
- Yeah...
or secret code.
I love, uh, Caesar's shift of the Vigen๏ฟฝre square.
Wanna camp out here and tail 'em?
Seb: Mmm...
Kevin: Highly recommend.
Then next time Mina stands you up,
we'll meet here and find out the truth.
Mina: Find out the truth?
Seb: How did you...
- What are you doing?
Are you guys spying on me?
- What?
No, we were just, um...
you tell her.
- Yeah, it's...
it's late.
It's, uh, snack time for snakey.
- Explain yourself.
Seb: Okay, I will.
It's the innocent act.
You're hiding something and you're lying about it,
and I can't take people who lie to me, okay?
So, bye.
Mina: Yeah?
Well I can't take people
who snoop around in my business
and won't let me have my privacy.
Maybe I do have a secret,
but maybe it's not mine to share.
Maybe that's why I'm not always so reliable,
maybe that's why my excuses sound lame.
But you keep putting me on the spot
like it's a test on how I feel about you.
I like you, okay?
Seb: Okay!
Mina: And now you're going around with Kevin Murphy?
- You know what,
I didn't think about it like that.
I never considered
that you might be keeping someone else's confidence.
It's not that you don't trust me,
but someone else trusts you.
Mina: And I don't want to break it.
- I guess I just got a little Murphy'd in it all.
- Ya think?
- Look, could we just forget that this happened?
Give it another go?
Meet later?
- Yeah.
- Really?
- Yeah.
- Well then, I will see you later.
?
- [sighs of relief]
[footsteps]
Ruby: So, this is it.
I go to Ireland, new well keeper moves in.
Wish grants itself, done and done.
[dramatic music plays]
[magical whoosh]
Well hello, last clue.
Please let there be something to you.
This was Old Tom's.
Where were you traveling to?
?
Oh, hospital.
?
?
But...
I wasn't even born yet.
?
Old Tom: Dear Ruby Viola O'Reilly,
we will never meet of course.
But, if we did,
I imagine it going something like this.
- Here!
A bitter, grey day.
A tombstone sky.
- Tom?
Tom: And a wind, as cold as well stone.
- Well, uh, a pleasure to meet you, uh,
Ruby Viola O'Reilly.
You know our, our friend here.
[chuckles]
Friend, that's a, that's a good one.
O-our friend and I don't always, uh,
get along.
- I know.
Tom: That well is a trickster.
Oh, y-you know, I mean, devious, shrewd.
[exhales]
Just rotten to the core.
- Tricky, sure, but a force for good.
- Uh...
I-I was like you.
I-I, I was young and, and trusting like you once.
But I learned, you know,
that the well has its ways.
Even when I tried to put it behind me,
you know, it, it wouldn't stop.
You know, just the, the, the lights and j-
[shouting] maddening!
I, I couldn't stand it anymore
and so I, I put my hands onto the stones
and your name appeared.
Only just for a moment,
but there it was and that was it,
and that's when I knew.
- Knew what?
- That it was waiting for me to die.
- No, I-
Tom: Because then you would take over
and there would be no one left to-
stop it!
?
I, I tried so hard to be the end of our long line.
I mean, I, I tried to burn everything,
to leave no trace.
But the log book would not even catch,
the pages would not even singe.
[chuckles]
But I, I did not want to let that, that thing
do to you what it did to me.
- But you couldn't stop it?
- No, so I'm warning you instead, okay?
The well is a liar.
Every well keeper gets one wish but...
the well wouldn't grant mine.
- About Miss Price?
- Hmm.
Oh, it would, uh,
send me out to grant wishes for others,
you know, restore their lives
but mine, no.
It's like I wasn't worthy.
I wasn't, uh...
pure of heart.
Are you pure of heart, Ruby Viola O'Reilly?
- I, I like to think so.
- [chuckles]
Then you may still have yours.
One wish, use it well.
[whispering] Use it to wish this well gone forever.
- [breathing rapidly]
Sam: Signed, Thomas Angus O'Reilly.
Whoa, dude can set a scene.
Ruby: Not really surprised.
He made pictures and songs,
why not a whole set piece?
- Guy's mind was fertile.
Twisted, but fertile.
But, it does bring up some questions.
Sam: Yeah, like
if the suitcase thing in the vision
isn't about Ireland
but about this Tom letter instead,
why would the well want you to find it?
- To tell me something.
- Like?
- The keeper gets a wish.
I guess my little outburst over Ms. Miranda
didn't count.
- Wait, if that's the case,
then why didn't the well grant Tom's wish?
- I, I don't know.
Because he was trying to use it to control someone else
or because it wasn't for the right reasons?
- But you're pure of heart,
so you still get your one wish, right?
Sam: In other words, you can use your wish...
- To get rid of this wish.
- It's perfect.
- You have to do this.
- I, um...
[exhales]
Okay, a, a wish has to be sincere
and worded just the right way, um,
so how do I phrase it to get what I want?
Do I wish to be the well keeper forever?
- Mmm, don't know.
Then you might live forever like a vampire
'til the earth goes hurdling into the sun.
- Noted, maybe I wish things wouldn't change.
Mina: 'Cause you want to be in high school forever?
- Uh, okay, how about,
I wish I didn't need to grant the next wish,
and I quote, "I wish I was the new well keeper" unquote?
- [snickers] A bit wordy.
- It's a wish, not a haiku.
Ruby: Ugh, agreed, it's not elegant
but it says everything that I mean.
- So you're doing this?
- Do I have a choice?
?
[phone pings]
[exhales]
Just got home.
[sighs]
[grunts] Give me five seconds!
?
Oh, Mom.
?
?
If only I could've used this wish for you.
- Ruby, you doin' all right?
Whatcha thinkin' about over there?
- Mom.
About how after she died,
I thought I would die too.
Like, fallen into this bottomless pit of hurt.
?
- Something happen?
- Dad, if you could have made a wish
and kept Mom from dying,
would you have?
- Are you kidding?
Of course.
And believe me, I did.
- Me too.
I wished so hard for things not to change but...
they did anyways.
- Part of life.
Maybe the biggest part.
- Is it?
Does it have to be
when things are so, so wrong and unfair?
Aren't there things that we can do t-to...
- To avoid the pain of living.
Afraid not.
Loss comes without our permission.
I don't think even a well wish can stop it.
[phone pings]
?
- [sniffles]
Guess we'll just have to see.
- Ruby?
Ruby: I'll be in the woods.
[door opens and closes]
What is it?
Have I not been a good well keeper?
Have I not granted every single wish
you've given me?
Why are you trying to take this away from me?
This isn't fair, don't do this!
[zwhoosh]
Woman 1: I wish I was the new well keeper.
- Why?!
[zwhoosh]
Woman 1: I wish I was the new well keeper.
- What if I worked twice as hard?
What if I-I promise to be better?
?
[sharp magical pitch]
Stop it, stop,
[shouting] stop!
[sharp magical pitch]
'Kay, fine.
But I'm not losing this without a fight,
I'm making this wish.
[shaky breathing]
[under breath] My turn.
[zwhoosh]
I wish that...
[quiet] I wish, I wish, I wish...
[magical blow]
No!
This isn't my wish.
Okay, I'm not Old Tom.
[shaky breathing]
I'm Ruby and I can do this.
My mom taught me how.
I just need a place to think.
?
[grunting]
[tense music plays]
?
[gentle music plays]
Why?
Why do the things I love always go away?
[gently sobbing]
Daniel: Hey, you okay?
Ruby?
Ah, Ruby.
Climbed a little too high I think.
- I- I wasn't thinking, um...
Daniel: It's okay, you're all right.
I'm here, I got you, okay?
Ruby: [grunting]
Daniel: No, no, no.
Ruby: [sobbing]
- Just take a breath.
Think about all the times that we climbed trees.
All right, put your feet on my shoulders.
Just gonna do the reverse of that.
You ready?
You're safe.
- [heavy breathing]
I get it.
I get the wish.
It's about shoulders, the ones I've stood on.
All the well keepers, my family before me.
My mom and my dad.
And even Tom.
They've guided me, lifted me, protected me.
[exhales]
And it's my turn now.
That's what the well is telling me.
It's my turn to be the shoulders.
[grunts]
[thud]
Daniel: Okay.
- Dad, there's a new well keeper.
- What?
Ruby: But it's okay.
I know what to do now.
?
I'm going to pass on everything I've learned.
Everything.
- You're really okay with this?
- I am, actually.
It's just like with mom.
I'm not letting go,
I'm not giving up or moving on.
I'm simply becoming part of something bigger,
you know?
- Yeah, I do know.
?
Ruby: That's where you find balance.
In being, not wanting.
In giving, not taking.
And gratitude for it all,
even the hardest parts.
?
?
[heavily breathing]
[knocking at door]
- Hi.
Ruby: Hi, um,
I'm looking for Hannah Eloise Callaghan?
- And you're...?
- Ruby O'Reilly.
- Oh, you're Ruby!
We have heard so much about you.
[chuckles]
I'm Beth, let me get her.
Hannah!
There's family here to see you!
[running footsteps]
[high-pitched buzz]
- You're Hannah.
?
I had faith in the well,
and what do you know.
Looks like the well had faith in me.
How old are you?
Hannah: Three!
Ruby: [laughing] Yeah you are!
I wish I could be the new well keeper,
something a little girl asked her mom to write down
and read back to her
after reading a book about a wishing well.
A wish that will come true one day,
they all do, eventually.
But at least 10, 12 years from now.
'Til then, Hannah, I'll keep granting wishes
and making sure you're ready
so even in your worst moments,
you'll never lose this grateful feeling,
this wonder over the mystery of living,
and the pure joy of this perfect moment.
