Original subtitles

[footsteps thumping]

Liam: Is she sleeping in?

Daniel: Yeah.

Not surprised.

She probably tossed and turned

as much as we did.

[dishware clattering]

Your Grandpa O invited your grandma

for a visit.

- Oh!

- Mostly wants to see you.

Ruby: Tell Dad I'll be right back,

I-I-I have to do one quick thing.

- Where's Ruby?

- We talked about this, she'll be here.

- This is nice, isn't it, Carol?

[somber music]

Ruby: [panting]

I missed them.

- I gotta ask...

why?

- The wish.

?

[sighs]

[footsteps]

[plate clatters]

- Morning.

Liam: Hmm.

- Thanks, Dad, it looks great.

- Yeah.

[tense silence]

- Listen, um, I just wanted to say again

how sorry I am about yesterday--

Liam: No, no, I blame myself.

I never should've encouraged you.

I got excited about the well, and I--

Daniel: No, Dad, this is on me.

I'm the parent,

I'm supposed to let my kid make mistakes, sure,

but step in before something important goes wrong.

- No, no, I stayed for the wish

and messed up the family reunion.

It's my fault Grandma left.

And, and I've missed

a lot of family dinners and...

skipped out on friends.

School is...

The point is--

[sharp inhale]

I'm taking a break from the well.

Liam: Well, I don't know--

Daniel: Can you actually do that?

- It's just a well,

it's not a baby with a pair of scissors.

[spoon clatters]

It can wait.

[ethereal chime]

[mystical music]

[sighs]

[clears throat]

?

- It's doing that thing, isn't it?

- Yeah, but...

I'm not answering.

[sighs]

[fridge door opens]

[chiming intensifies]

Liam: So, what,

you see a little bit of light or something?

- [hesitatingly] Uh-huh.

?

- [firmly] I really am taking a break.

?

But I'm just gonna go run and get this one wish

so that it'll stop bugging me.

Be right back.

[door squeaks]

- Will she, though?

- Even money?

[door shuts]

?

Ruby: [annoyed] Okay, I'm here, but I'm...

really mad at you.

This better be important.

[whoosh]

[ethereal music]

[sighs]

?

[magical chime]

[warbling]

?

[powder crumbles]

Man 1: I wish he was dead.

- [gasps]

A death wish?

[echoing] Really?!

[tense music]

[theme music]

?

?

Daniel: So, you're okay with this?

I know it's not the timeline for the haul

that you and you and your mom had hoped for...

- Totally.

You need a roof before you can have

a rooftop patio, right?

- Yep.

And before you have a climbing wall,

you need...

- Walls.

- Exactly.

But hopefully the assessment won't be too bad.

There's a lotta tradespeople donating their time for this.

- You know, once that's done,

we could start with the easiest part.

The performance space.

- It is the cheapest build.

- And everyone agreed on it.

[phone rings]

Bit of an emergency.

Gotta go, but, uh,

glad you're on this, Mister O.

With you in charge, we know it'll be done right.

- But no pressure.

- No pressure.

Bye.

[whimsical music]

A death wish?

Really?

Mina: That's morbid.

- Ya think?

Sam: So, that's why you're not here?

- Exactly.

This is all too much.

Nuh-uh, no way, not playing.

- But you can't just not do a wish,

can you?

- Can she?

Ruby: Well, I have to make it up

to my family.

I need to be on Team O'Reilly,

not Team Creepy Wish.

So, this wish can just forget it.

Sam: Didn't your great uncle try that?

How'd that work out?

Mina: Well, maybe you can't do the wish,

but we can.

Besides, "I wish he was dead"?

That's a big one.

Maybe even urgent.

Sam: Yeah, Mina's right.

The good news is,

we can totally take this very, uh,

intriguing wish off your hands.

- Well, that would keep the well outta my face,

so I could hero it up at home.

Tempting, for sure.

Okay, but you guys have to work together.

Build on each other's ideas.

And keep me in the loop.

- You got it.

It's in good hands.

[laptop thuds]

[exciting music]

- Okay, let's review the clues.

With the two of us working on this together,

we'll be invincible!

[laughs]

[door squeaks]

- [sighs]

[front door opens]

Miss Price: [sing-song voice] Hello?

Anyone home?

[door closes]

[normal voice] Ruby!

Ruby: [gasps]

- Just dropping these off.

Whatcha doin'?

Ruby: Hi, Miss Price!

[cabinet doors thud]

Just winning the hearts and minds of my family.

- I'm sorry, what?

- I, uh...

messed up a family reunion.

Miss Price: [gasps]

Ruby: But this right here, best before 2018,

this is saving lives guaranteed!

[can thuds in trash bin]

- Well, if you're trying to impress

the men in this house,

I'm sorry to tell ya, but you're going about it...

completely the wrong way.

- I am?

Miss Price: Trust me.

The quickest way to their hearts

is through their tummies, like with a...

family recipe, maybe?

- Oh!

I can do that.

- Good!

Make them something they love...

with love.

- [sighs]

Mina: Sam, for the millionth time,

this is not a dark wish!

- Look at the clues!

Dark, murder even.

Plus, "I wish he was dead."

Mina: You know how twisty the well is.

The wording has to be symbolic,

I just don't know how.

- Maybe we should call Ruby.

Mina: No!

We promised.

- Okay, well,

skull and crossbones, no idea, plus creepy.

And gravestone, there are hundreds here.

Plus, also creepy.

- Leaving the flaky green powder.

- [sighs]

[tapping on phone]

Oh!

This isn't creepy at all.

Uh, Paris Green is a toxic powder

made with arsenic.

- Okay, so what if it is poison?

So, what?

Doesn't mean it's something bad.

Mr. Pritchard was in the store yesterday

to buy some.

- Really?

- Sam, no, no, leave Mr. Pritchard alone!

Sam: There's no harm in askin' a few questions.

- Fine, then you're doing it without me.

- Whatever.

See you when I find the wisher.

[curious music]

- Not if I find him first!

?

Woman 1: Look, I just came in to re-up my glove supply.

Didn't expect all these questions.

So, why do you wanna know about green poison anyway?

- Uh, for school?

It's a career day thing.

Research your dream job.

- Pest control is your dream job?

- Love me them poisons.

[nervous chuckle]

Woman 1: Yeah.

Toxicants are what drew me in, too.

Truth is I became more of a live trap gal,

but sometimes...

- Sometimes...

- Every once in a while,

I get a critter that can't be caught.

Like at Emerald General.

Crafty little fella.

- I, uh, bet you really wish you could get him, huh?

Woman 1: You have no idea.

Hey, why don't you tag along?

A little on-the-job training.

- Oh, I, I, um, I-I-I dunno.

Woman 1: C'mon!

First step in a rewarding lifelong career.

?

[birdsong]

[suspicious music]

?

- Sam?!

- Hm?

Mina: What are you doing here?

- Me?

What are you doing here?

- Finding the wisher.

- Yeah, me too.

I went to...

Pritchard's house

and there was a note stuck on his door

saying he was here.

An emergency.

- So?

- Well, I'd say arsenic poisoning

counts as an emergency.

Woman 3: Mr. Pritchard?

Your friend is ready to see you.

- Suspect on the move.

?

[indistinct speaker announcement]

Mina: [sighs]

?

It's not him, I mean it.

Sam: You just want me to be wrong.

- True, but I also found the real wisher.

And there she is.

Hi!

- Hey!

Good news.

Got him.

He's in a trap out back.

Healthy and hearty,

now I just need to relocate him.

- Wait, what?

Relocate him?

But didn't you wish he was dead?

Woman 1: What?

No!

Poison is the last resort.

- Huh.

Woman 1: Maybe pest control isn't right for you.

You're vicious.

Mr. Pritchard: There you go, Allen.

- Vicious.

Mr. Pritchard: Picked you right up!

Little ice, little rest, good as new.

Hey, kids.

Mina: Hey, Mr. Pritchard!

So much for your poisoning.

- [heavy sigh]

So what now?

Boy 1: [laughing]

Boy 2: Ah, dude, it's so broken.

Mina: Look, skull and crossbones logo!

You think maybe...

Sam: Yeah, I kinda do.

Boy 1: Remember to like and subscribe.

Mina: Look, another one!

Sam: Maybe the wisher's one of them.

- Or maybe it's both.

?

[uplifting music]

- [grunts]

Um...

?

[sighs]

[casserole dish clatters]

[oven door squeaks]

[dish thuds]

[door squeaks]

[timer cranks]

[sighs]

?

[sniffs]

?

[clears throat]

[sniffs]

I shouldn't...

?

[sharp inhale]

[sighs]

[tapping]

[dial tone]

Sam: Hello?

- Sam!

Uh, how's the wish going?

Sam: Great!

But busy, I can't talk, call you later.

[dial tone]

?

[tapping]

[dial tone]

Mina: Hey, Ruby!

- Mina, Sam couldn't talk, is everything all right?

Mina: Oh!

Yeah, we're just running down the leads.

Busy, busy, busy, you know.

[chuckles]

- Are you sure you don't need any...

Mina: Nope!

It's going great.

I'll call you later, okay?

Bye!

[dial tone]

- Didn't expect to see you here.

Didn't you get a wish this morning?

- Uh, yep,

but I'm trying this new thing called delegating.

My friends do the wish

and I get to do family for a change.

- [sniffs]

Smells good!

- [chuckles]

Liam: Smells like...

your mom's taco casserole, is it?

- Oh, well, you'll just have to find out

at the special family lunch I'm cooking!

Liam: Okay, I'll be there.

Good to see you willing to make a change, hm?

Kinda reminds me of me!

[chuckles]

- [chuckles]

[sighs]

Mina: Okay, so if we wanna figure out this wish,

we've gotta figure out these matching logo dudes.

Boy 1: [on the computer] Hey, guys, we're back!

- Thought I recognized 'em at the hospital.

Here they are.

They're brothers.

Corey and Rory Wheeler,

aka Hardcore Corey and Reckless Rory.

Thechallenges.eaded

Uhcactus handball...cut,

ooh, check out "Ouch Race."

Rory: This is the Ouch Race.

Aaah!

Crowd: [exclaiming]

Rory: You got this!

Sam: Whoa, his brain says yes but his feet say yow.

Mina: Ouch is right.

Who watches this stuff?

- Oh, they have a lot of subscribers.

These guys are going big time.

Which makes total sense.

What if one of the brothers

doesn't like sharing the spotlight?

Cash flows, greed grows,

and the next thing you know...

[clicks tongue]

- Hmph.

- You got a better idea?

- Not yet,

but I recognize some of the locations

in the videos,

so I'm going to go and get the real story.

- Me, too.

And I'll do it first.

- It's not a competition, Sam!

- Thought it wasn't a competition.

[slide thuds]

- Still beat ya.

[machinery hums]

Miss Price: How's the plan look?

- Looks historic, yet contemporary...

and expensive.

Miss Price: Don't worry, we'll figure out the funding.

Plus, we're bringing in more volunteers

to help clear this place out.

Uh, excuse me.

Hey, I was wondering if you guys could help me.

Uh, there's a table, where is it--

yeah, it's over here.

It needs to go out into the back lot,

but we're gonna restore it, so...

[overlapping voices]

[crackling sound]

[construction ambience]

- Uh...

[hollow knocking]

Oh, don't tell me I have to replace this--

[crunch]

Woman 2: Oh!

What's a nice guy like you

doing in this hole in the wall?

Daniel: Uh...

I was just askin' myself the same thing.

Both: [chuckle]

Aria: Hardcore Corey and Reckless Rory.

[shouts and yells from video]

Yep, I was there when they did that.

Said it was gonna be this fun milkshake video,

and it turned out to be

this insane brain freeze stunt.

- What happened?

Aria: Well, that poor Corey kid went cross-eyed

and practically fell over.

I mean, I almost called 9-1-1.

Mina: "Corey loses challenge."

Boy 3: Hardcore Corey and Reckless Rory?

Aw man, they're the best!

You know, not to brag, but, uh,

I even helped out with snake sleeves challenge.

Yeah, lent them my Acrantophis dumerili.

Sam: Uh-huh.

You mean the bit where the snake was

stuck on Corey's arm for, like, a week?

- Yeah...

yeah, man, Corey was pretty rattled.

I felt for the guy, but...

it was a scream!

[curious music]

Sam: "Corey loses challenge."

?

- Mm!

[utensil clatters]

I haven't had this in...

oh, it's so good.

- See, there's more to me than just wish-granting.

I'm a taco hero.

- Pretty sure you're right.

But I'm gonna need seconds to be positive.

Ruby: [chuckles]

- [smacks lips]

Yup, hero!

- I just, uh, hope Dad thinks so, too.

- Well, I'm sorry he didn't make it.

But if you're hopin' to smooth things over

with your dad,

you're going about it completely the wrong way.

- I am?

Liam: Yeah!

Connecting with people has nothing to do

with meals or gifts or stuff.

It's about time.

A lesson I learned far too late.

- Time.

- True fact!

They say once you leave high school,

90% of the time you spend with your parents...

is gone.

[pats shoulder]

[thoughtful music]

- That's, uh...

[exhales shakily]

Wow, um...

[sighs]

I...

[breathes shakily]

Okay...

new plan.

[box thuds]

[lid clatters]

?

[people chattering]

?

- [sighs]

I wonder how they're doing.

?

[wood scraping]

[click]

[footsteps]

- Huh.

[box thuds]

[click]

Well, this is interesting.

[footsteps]

Um...

almost looks ungrantable.

Oh, my favorite.

Always a challenge.

Sam: [groans]

Mina: Sam, that doesn't make any sense!

Sam: Makes perfect sense to me.

Hey!

- What are you doing here?

- I, I just, uh, wanted to come up and say hi,

and, uh, you know, see how things were going.

Sam: Oh, perfect!

You got a second?

We should run some stuff by you.

- Nope, nope, nope!

We promised to take care of things

so she can go hero it up with her family.

- Uh, but--

- It's the least we can do as best friends.

Thanks for dropping by!

Ruby: I was just gonna--

Mina: See ya!

Ruby: No, wait, but the-there's a thing

I think that I--

- So, in every video,

poor Corey gets punted around like a human hacky sack.

- Meanwhile, everyone wants Rory

to have his own spin-off.

- Corey must be so unhappy.

- And furious.

[suspenseful music]

You know what this means?

Mina: Yeah.

It means Corey is definitely our wisher.

Sam: And he wishes his brother dead.

- So...

?

What do we do now?

?

- [slowly] We help him with his wish.

- What?

No!

Who are you right now?

- Can we really defy the well?

- Of course not, but...

I'm not gonna help it commit a crime either.

- Yeah?

What if we have to?

?

- Uh, hi, Dad!

Uh, I thought maybe we could have lunch together.

Maybe after your construction party.

- We called in some of our students.

Working for free,

figured they should be allowed

to make it fun.

- Oh, I--

Gabe: Mister O?

Looks like the damage goes all the way up.

Should we check the ventilation space

above the ceiling?

- Uh...

- Don't worry.

We know how to get up there.

Daniel: I'm sure you do.

Um, be careful!

Okay?

Gabe: Got it!

- So, how's your first day going?

- Uh, honestly, not what I expected.

Thank you for this, I am starved.

- Uh, yeah, uh, take your time.

I actually thought maybe we could

spend some time together.

I've really been working on realigning my priorities

and I just--

[loud crashing]

- Oh, no!

- Uh--

Daniel: Guys, guys!

Step away from the disaster!

- [quietly] I just hope I'm not too late.

Mina: Hard no, Sam.

Sam: Technically,

it's only aiding and abetting.

[crowd din]

Both: What's wrong with you?

- Uh, I'm fine.

What's wrong with you?

- Sam wants to help Corey Wheeler

kill Rory Wheeler.

Sam: Mina wants to not help Corey Wheeler

kill Rory Wheeler.

- Are you guys sure you don't need any help?

- Hm.

- Okay!

Just this once.

But then Ruby has to absolutely,

positively go do her family stuff!

How's that going, by the way?

- Uh...

great.

So, who says anybody has to kill anybody?

- The well does.

Mina: Sam does.

- All right, the well isn't usually so obvious.

Let's think about the other clues,

like the gravestone.

- Gravestone.

Simple.

Dead guy.

- Exactly!

You wouldn't have a gravestone

for somebody who wasn't already dead,

would you?

- No.

You wouldn't.

So...

"I wish he was dead" might be referring

to somebody already dead?

- Maybe, maybe not.

You have to think like the well

and not take the easy way out.

- Don't take the easy way out.

Mina: We can do that.

Ruby: [sighs]

And so can I.

[hopeful music]

Rory: Amateurs, you're in the right place!

In this extreme version--

- All right, this is new.

Rory: --classic game with heart-thumping action

and mind-blowing--

- Look at his shirt.

- Like and subscribe--

Mina: "Dave forever?"

Who's Dave?

- No idea.

Rory: You won't believe--

- Scroll through and see if there's anything else.

[laughing and whooping]

[tense music]

Both: No way!

Mina: That must be who the wish is referring to.

Sam: So, where does that take us?

?

You know what I think?

- No, and I'm thankful for that

every day.

- It all lines up.

The poison, the gravestone.

The brothers did it together.

- Sam, no!

- And they got away with it.

- No-- Sam, no, no, no.

- Let's find out more about this Dave guy.

Okay, Google, talk to me.

Give me an obit or somethin'.

- At this point...

[overlapping voices]

- Fine.

We can spend time together doing something else like...

construction.

[music playing overhead]

- Um....

[loud thudding]

- Ooh.

- What is she doing?

Ruby: Look at me helping out.

What a team player.

Gabe: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, stop!

- Ruby, what are you doing?

Ruby: Helping out.

I thought since we couldn't do lunch,

we could do this together!

Daniel: Uh, wow,

really nice of you to help, but...

- That step was supposed to come off,

not go back on.

- Oh.

Well, then I can help with that!

Daniel: Not right now.

First, we have to take down that wall and--

Ruby: Oh, well, then we can do that together.

Uh--

[hammer thuds]

Um--

Daniel: Ruby, what are you doing?

- I am ready!

Daniel: Whoa!

- [gasps]

[powering down]

[workers groan collectively]

Daniel: [sighs]

Ruby: [gasps]

Uh, sorry.

Woman 4: What's going on?!

- I wanted to help, but I...

sorry.

- I love that you wanna help, honey,

but maybe let the people

with the well-worn tool belts do that.

Here, look.

I need to get all this stuff.

[paper rustles]

You wanna get that for me?

- Uh, but then you'd be here and I'd be--

- Really helpin' me out.

[poignant music]

- Okay.

- Thanks lots.

?

[helmet thuds quietly]

- [sighs]

?

Mina: Weird, it's like David Alcyoneus Wheeler--

Sam: Never existed.

Other than in the vids.

Which leaves us only one option.

[expectant music builds]

- We have to talk to the brothers.

- Yep.

Corey: Hi!

Always happy to meet a fan!

Mina: Yeah, that's so great!

Uh, thank you so much for taking the time.

Corey: I've got all the time in the world.

But if you wanna meet Rory, well...

he's the popular one, and he's not here right now.

- Uh, actually,

can I just talk with you, then?

- Yeah, I guess.

Um, but not about the challenges,

the videos, or my brother, okay?

Which pretty much leaves the weather.

- [chuckles]

Um, I wanted to know about you,

the real you.

- Really?

That's a first.

Um, sure.

Fire away.

- [chuckles]

He opened right up to me, it was amazing!

So then, he told me all about his childhood

and how the challenge channel started.

Rory has always been

hyper-competitive about everything.

That guy loves winning.

- Did you ask why Corey always seems

to bear the brunt of the stunts?

- Yeah, but he got all fidgety

and brushed off the question.

He was just all, look--

- Hardcore Corey is the fall guy.

End of story.

- Wait!

One more thing...

who's David?

- Wow.

You are a superfan, you really did your homework.

Let's just say Dave was like Rory's closest buddy.

Never much cared for him myself.

But that was a long time ago.

I was pretty little, like, eight or something.

- So, you weren't sad he died?

- What, no.

Why would you even say that?

Look, I'm busy.

Um, planning a big stunt here, so...

gotta go.

[door slams]

Sam: Well, that kinda went sideways.

Mina: Yeah, but it also gave me a new theory.

The brothers were probably really close

when they were little, right?

- Mm-hm.

Mina: But when Rory got all chummy with Dave,

Corey must have gone all jealous and then...

- He wished Dave was dead.

That must be what the well wants us to do,

investigate an old, unsolved murder

and bring the killer to justice.

- No!

Absolutely not!

- Well, then, what, then?

- I don't know.

[sighs]

This is the part Ruby always figures out.

But...

Corey did act pretty weird.

Something definitely happened.

So, what should we do?

- Go to the cops, that's what.

[curious music]

Woman 5: Yes, aisle three.

Man 2: Thanks so much!

[box thuds]

[paper rustles]

Ms. Amani: Oh.

Ruby: Uh--

- Oh.

- Ms. Amani?

Is everything okay?

- Oh, yeah, look,

this just popped up on my memories.

Ruby: Baby Mina!

Aww.

Ms. Amina: Gets me every time.

I miss sharing everything.

Having so much time together.

Ruby: Yeah,

I get wanting to spend more time.

That's why I'm trying to help my dad with the hall,

but I, uh...

I don't think that he really wants me there.

Ms. Amani: What?!

Not a chance.

But if you want more time with him,

you're goin' about it completely the wrong way.

- Again?

Ms. Amani: It's a new project!

He can't enjoy time with you at the hall.

Way too busy!

[register beeps]

But...

I'll let you in on a secret.

- Okay.

Ms. Amani: Parents like to be part

of their kid's worlds, too.

To be invited to share stuff, it's a big deal.

Ruby: So, I need to invite my dad into my world.

[hopeful music]

[beep]

Thanks, Ms. Amani.

- No problem, Ruby.

?

- My world.

- An unsolved murder?

Involving rat poison?

- Yes.

- Or a wacky stunt?

- Yes.

- In Emerald?

Both: Yes.

- And you think I wouldn't remember a case like that?

Don't say yes.

- Maybe, then?

- Not a chance.

And even if it was an out of town case,

it would be reported locally

if it had any connection to an Emerald family.

[diner ambience]

Sorry guys, but I got real crimes

that I have to go deal with.

Good luck with...

[chuckles]

whatever this is.

- [defeated sigh]

Man.

- Okay, you're like eight years old, right?

And you wish your brother's new best friend was dead.

Then an accident happens.

It's not murder, it just happens,

but you wished it.

Sam: Okay.

Continue.

- So, Corey feels guilty wishing something

that makes Rory sad.

- What if the guilt grew and grew

and started eating him alive?

Mina: Yes!

So, what if "I wish he was dead"

means two things?

What if it is a wish he made in the past

but also something else?

What if the guilt is driving Corey over the edge and...

what if the "he" in "I wish he was dead" is...

- Himself.

[suspenseful music]

[crowd din]

[papers rustling]

[footsteps]

[door opens]

- All right, lights are back!

Everyone back in.

[overlapping relieved voices]

Hey!

Ruby.

How you doin'?

- Uh, good.

Um, I'm trying to expand my world,

and hopefully...

bring my dad into it.

So, uh, volleyball, coin collecting...

- Hey!

Rock climbing sounds fun.

It's got it all: great exercise, time to talk,

special grippy shoes that make you feel like a gecko.

- Huh.

Hm!

Perfect!

Uh, thanks, Ms. Miranda.

- Mm-hm!

- Cannon versus Corey?!

Remember we thought

the person Corey wanted dead was himself?

Look!

- Ready, aim,

guess who's in the line of fire?

Him!

Watch as I really put my brother on blast.

This could be the video to end all videos.

- Is that a giant cannon?

- And a box marked ammo?

They're gonna blast Corey with a cannon!

[explosion sound effect]

[suspenseful music]

The video to end all videos and...

"I wish he was dead."

Do you know what this means?

- It means we need to stop this stunt

before someone gets hurt or worse!

?

Corey: What are you talking about?

I'm fine.

Mina: I don't get it.

- You should totally be dead.

- Why aren't you dead?

- You didn't think--

- Aaah, really?

No, we aren't going to hurt Corey,

no-not at all.

- [chuckles]

First of all, we were using paintballs,

not cannon balls.

Rory: And we took every safety precaution.

Corey: Uh, I did my best to dodge,

but cannon one, Corey none!

So, there was never any danger.

- So, you weren't trying to punish yourself?

- Why would I do that?

[chuckles]

Can you believe those guys actually thought that?

Rory: You guys are hilarious.

Corey: I know--

Sam: I--

Mina: Uh...

Daniel: Rock climbing?

Where is this coming from?

- Well, I thought we could use it.

It's a trust-building activity

and it means reaching new heights.

And I thought we could, you know--

- I hate to interrupt, Mister O,

but that damage is way worse than we thought.

- [exasperated sigh]

Ruby: Dad...

Daniel: Sorry, Ruby,

it's just every new problem leads to three more,

I ju-- I don't even know how to start to fix this.

- Yeah, me neither.

[construction ambience]

- What's up?

- It's just...

worried that the damage is worse than I thought?

[thoughtful music]

- Mister O?

?

Daniel: Okay.

I get it.

Sorry, Gabe, take five.

I'm gonna check on it afterwards.

?

Let's forget rocks.

C'mon, let's go climb into some stools

and scale the heights of empty calories.

- [chuckles]

[crowd din]

Sam: If Corey coming to a grizzly end

isn't what the wish meant, then what was--

Mina: [defeated groan]

Have we been spinning our wheels this whole time?

Where did we go wrong?

Sam: The wish is still the wish.

"I wish he was dead."

It must mean something.

- We need Ruby.

Ruby: [chuckles]

Thanks, Dad.

- And there's our chance.

Mina: Ruby!

Ruby.

We need to talk.

Ruby: Uh, really, guys?

Because, um,

now is not actually a good time.

- Go ahead, I'll grab a table.

[footsteps]

[doorbell jingles]

Mina: We've made a mess of it all and we need help.

Sam: I thought we were doing okay, but we're actually not.

Ruby: Guys, I'm sorry, I-I-I can't.

Not now.

I'm finally starting to fix things with my dad.

- Ruby!

- [sighs]

- Please?

- You guys said you had this.

- I know, and we're sorry, but we're really stuck,

and this is a huge, important,

and really hard wish.

- [sighs]

[pages rustle]

Um...

okay, I see what you guys were going for.

Uh, Dave, uh-huh, a kid, makes sense.

This isn't terrible work, guys.

- Thanks?

Ruby: I know how the well thinks,

and the wisher's voice

didn't sound like a little kid.

So, if Dave died a long time ago,

then it's not who Corey wished was dead.

Dave is a red herring.

You need to focus on the other clues,

like the powder.

- Okay.

We'll try that.

- And, one more thing, um...

the gravestone that I saw in my vision,

it was a bit...

wiggly.

Both: Wiggly?

[doorbell jingles]

Daniel: So, this has been a day.

Ruby: Yeah.

- One strawberry cheesecake and one surprise me!

Are we all done here?

I'll grab these for you.

- Well, what did she, uh, give you this time?

- I think it's plain ol' vanilla.

- Surprise!

[footsteps]

- Dad, um...

I...

I've been trying.

All day, and...

I think you're still mad at me,

which, which I totally get,

I mean, you have every right to be,

it's just...

well, I-I still want to tell you that--

- It's okay.

- It's not okay.

It's been on your face all day.

[diner music]

- Listen, I'm gonna tell you something

that only parents know

and don't usually tell their kids.

But this being a parent thing,

I'm making it up as I go.

[poignant music]

- Okay?

Daniel: So, everything new that happens with you

is a first for me, too.

?

- Right.

Daniel: And sometimes,

I have no idea what I'm doing.

[chuckles]

used to go in our bedroom

and we'd like... each other

And we'd lean on each other for ideas of how to wing it.

but I don't have that anymore, so...

when something's hard...

sometimes I, I just need to take a breath

and think about what to do.

So, I'm not angry.

I'm just working through it.

- Plus, your kid is a well keeper.

Can't even Google that.

- Tell me about it.

I tried.

- [chuckles]

Aria: Come on, Leonard, you finicky fish face.

I got the green stuff, just like you like it.

[curious music]

[ethereal chime]

Ruby: The red herring.

[whoosh]

?

- [chuckles]

I, uh, mm...

sorry!

[tapping on phone]

[phone dials]

Mina: Ruby?

- Mina!

Dave, I-I think he actually was a red herring.

Well...

uh, not that exactly.

Can you see if weirdly maybe he was a...

fish?

Mina: A fish?

What?

- I know, just...

check it out.

Okay?

Mina: Okay.

Daniel: Everything okay?

Ruby: Uh, yeah, um...

uh, as, as you were saying before...

- Um, yeah, I was just saying...

Ruby: [chuckles]

- Ruby, you're a good kid,

and I know that, and I've always known that.

And the well is important.

- Uh-huh.

- But so is the family.

- Right.

Well, well, that's exactly what I think,

it's just, well,

I've been trying to figure out

how to do it all,

but there's not enough time in the day,

and I...

- [sighs]

- Ms. Amani said I should invite you into my world.

[gentle music]

[notification dings]

So...

wanna do this wish with me?

[exciting music builds]

- Really?

- So, how was that surprise?

?

- A good one.

Aria: Awesome!

[chuckles]

?

- Race ya.

[doorbell jingles]

?

- Everybody's busy at the moment

and I won't be long.

- Happy to do it!

So, I just write all the bad news here

as it comes in.

- That's pretty much today's agenda, yeah.

Thanks.

Okay, I'm gonna call Grandpa O,

let him know we'll be late.

You go ahead.

- [chuckles]

Mina: How did you know?

I just talked with Corey, he said Dave was a goldfish.

- What about the gravestone?

- Well, there was a miniature one

in Dave's fishbowl.

- Wow.

Ruby O'Reilly, ace wish granter.

Dude, you should go pro.

- Well, there's no "i" in "trio".

- Yes, there is.

Ruby: Okay, well, how about quartet?

Introducing this week's special guest...

Sam: Mister O'Reilly? Mina: Your dad?

- Huh.

[playful music]

Rustic, yeah.

So, this is where the magic happens.

?

As you were.

Mina: [chuckles]

Ruby: Okay, so, uh,

Dave Wheeler was a pet fish that Rory had

when they were eight years old.

And Corey was jealous of it.

Maybe he wished that the fish was dead.

Sam: And it died?

As fish do?

- They even made a little stone for it.

Adorable.

- But you said the wisher's voice

wasn't a kid.

So, why did the well give us these clues?

- Well, I guess it reminded them

of the happier times before Dave.

But now he made the wish again.

- And that brings us back to the same question:

who does he want dead?

Ruby: Well, he loves his brother,

so it can't be him.

It has to be someone else.

Sam?

Fire up the Wheeler brother channel.

?

- [sighs]

Here we go.

[keyboard tapping]

There!

[laughing and shouting from video]

- Ouch!

- But that's nothing.

Check out the fan comments.

- Oof.

"Corey mailing it in now."

"He's so fake."

"What a poser."

[pauses video]

- There!

Rory Wheeler right after the stunt,

look at his face!

- Over the moon.

Sam: And then there's Corey with that look.

- Kinda looks like Ruby.

- What do you mean?

- Well, after you, in your own words,

messed up the family reunion.

That's guilt.

Ruby: Yeah, I know that feeling.

It is guilt.

And, it, it feels terrible.

I get what he's going through.

You wanna give all the time in the world,

but you just keep on letting everyone down.

- Well, you have the right idea,

but you're taking completely the wrong approach.

- Not you too!

Never mind.

Continue!

Daniel: Well, like bringing me in now.

I don't need to be here for this

because it's not about being together all the time.

It's about the right times, the important times.

- Right.

So, and just spit-balling here,

a family reunion.

- And when you're being distracted,

like you are now,

it's not the right time, either.

?

- So...

- Yeah.

You're neck-deep in a wish.

But think about why Corey feels the way he does

and how you can fix it.

You got this, good luck.

Ruby: My dad's right!

Corey is feeling guilty, but not about the fish,

it's about not wanting to make videos anymore!

- Oh.

So, getting throttled repeatedly

isn't quality time?

- A hundred percent,

but he doesn't wanna disappoint his brother.

Mina: And now, cue the chorus of angels

because everything makes sense!

Ruby: The "he" Corey wants dead

is the character of Hardcore Corey.

I mean, the fall guy, the fan punching bag.

- I don't blame him one bit.

- Yeah.

So, Sam, call Corey right now, okay?

We need to talk to him.

Time to put the human back in a human cannon ball.

[tense music]

Corey: [over the phone] Mina, uh, hi.

Mina: Hi, again!

Listen, you kind of wanna retire Hardcore Corey, right?

You might even say you wish he was dead?

Corey: I guess so.

Mina: My friend Ruby has an idea.

Corey: Okay.

Ruby: Here goes.

First, talk to your brother, really talk to him.

Then, you have a human-sized cannon

plus a huge waterfall plus a massive gorge.

Put 'em all together, and--

Corey: What are you saying?

We send Hardcore Corey over the brink?

Ruby: That's exactly what I'm saying.

[sighs]

So, you ready to do this?

- You bet.

[sighs]

[exhilarating music]

Rory: Let's do this!

Boy 3: Go, Corey!

Boy 4: Do it, man!

Rory: And...

- No paintballs this time.

Today, Hardcore Corey's the ammo,

and he's goin' blammo!

[thunk]

But does this cannon have the firepower

to blast him clear across that ravine?

Only one way to find out.

[music crescendos]

Boy 5: C'mon, Core!

Here we go!

?

[overlapping encouraging voices]

?

Rory: Ready!

[cannon clanking]

- All right.

- Can I do it?

- I got it first, sorry.

- Well, I was the one who talked with Corey.

Sam: Mina--

Mina: Can we at least do it together?

- We don't need two people to press a button--

[click]

[boom]

All: [exclaiming]

[cheers and laughing]

Rory: He's gone!

Oh, no!

It's over for Hardcore Corey!

And cut.

[camera beeps]

- That was amazing!

Mina: Yeah.

- It did look pretty cool, didn't it?

[laughing]

[playful music]

Ruby: And so, we bid farewell

to Hardcore Corey in a blaze of glory.

R.I.P.

- See, Sam?

I told you this wasn't a dark wish.

- I know.

Always trust the well, Mina.

Ruby: [chuckles]

Funny, when that life-sized dummy

tumbled to its mortal doom,

it's like it gave real Corey a new lease on life.

?

Everybody wants to do right by their family,

but it's hard without, you know,

going about it completely the wrong way.

?

Corey wanted to do right by his brother,

but guess what?

His brother wanted to do right by him too.

Together, we figured it out.

And they figured it out too, with their new channel.

[uplifting music]

?

[happy shouts]

?

[shouts and cheering]

?

Ruby: So, that leaves me.

Can I figure it out, too?

Can I manage the sheer too much-ness of my life?

Liam: [snoring]

[gentle piano music]

The crazy amounts of good intentions, of need,

of good old family togetherness,

and wishes.

Can I pull off my own stunt?

This tightrope walk of the well,

juggling it all?

I have to, I can, and I will.

I just don't know how yet.

?
