Ruby: "I wish he'd come home alive,
I wish I could vote,
I wish I could have a cookie."
[chuckles]
- A cookie?
That seems a little frivolous for a wish from the heart.
- Yeah, except sugar was rationed during the war.
Wisher wanted one for a kid's birthday
whose dad didn't come home.
- Oh.
You know, your grandma's town lost a third of its young men
in one battle during that war?
Not your great-grandad.
He made it,
gave the town back nine kids all named
after his lost buddies.
- That explains Great Aunt Chesterina.
Both: [chuckle]
- Is all this due to history class?
- I just like family stories.
They help me figure out the trickier wishes.
One thing about the O'Reilly side,
great puzzlers, all of us.
Liam: [whistling]
Good morning family!
Great day.
Time to seize it.
[crunch]
See you cool cats later.
[whistles]
Ruby: [softly] What is with him?
Daniel: [softly] I don't know.
Did you see the affirmation on the bathroom mirror
yesterday?
Ruby: Yeah, and the chirpy whistling.
I mean, good mood and Grandpa O
usually don't share a sentence.
- A mystery for sure.
[enchanting chimes]
- Make that two.
[thud]
[whooshing]
[gasp]
[whimsical music]
Man 1: And in third place
of the Apple Fest handwriting competition
we have...
- [sighs]
Woman 1: I wish he knew the whole story.
- [sighs]
Here we go.
[theme music]
Singer: [echoing] Oh, oh, oh.
Da da da da da da da.
- [whistling]
Daniel: Still suspiciously happy I see.
- [chuckles]
Well, I'm about to tackle something
I've avoided for too long.
Something I need your opinion on.
- My opinion?
Okay, I'll bite.
- Well, phone or email?
I want-- no,
I intend to contact your mother
and invite her here.
- My mother?
Carol?
My mother, Carol?
- I know.
- Uh, no, you don't.
- The last few months have made me realize,
I need to come to terms with my past.
I made a list, and your mom's number one.
I know I left behind a bit of...
- Carnage?
- Yeah.
And that's too bad.
Because Ruby deserves to have grandparents
who can be in the same room together.
I thought maybe if we break bread together
we could maybe leave the past in the past.
- Um.
Listen, I,
I don't know how receptive she's gonna be to this.
I don't know how receptive I am to this.
- Well, all I can do is try.
So, phone or email?
- Look, you're a grown man,
I can't tell you not to do this,
but, my opinion is don't do this.
?
- [sighs]
Ruby: Oh, just feel like I'm in my groove,
an unstoppable wish-granting force.
Sam: Unstoppable, huh?
Ruby: Plumbing emergency?
- Well that explains why the store
is suddenly sold out of rubber gloves.
Ruby: Okay, we'll just have to find somewhere else
to solve the wish.
- Hey, come on.
The door's open.
Mina: Way to go, Sam.
?
Ruby: Hm, well, it's not the library,
but it's not out in the elements either.
[door clicks closed]
What is this place?
- It's the old community hall.
They shut it down a while ago.
Mina: Yeah, back when they shut everything down.
It got pretty quiet around here.
[door squeaks open]
Man 2: This place is gonna be sick--
Ruby: Okay, the clues.
- Look, Gabe's here.
Looks like we're not the first ones
with this idea.
- Makes sense,
not like there are many places to go
in this town.
Sam: Yeah, might be onto something.
A little work, this place could be really cool.
Mina: You're right, it's got good bones.
- Guys, the wish?
Okay, so let's figure out the crest first.
It had...
Sam: You should see it, mom.
I mean, all it needs
is some paint and power and wifi
and it would be a great space.
You need to see it.
- Oh, I know that hall.
- Oh, you do?
- Yeah, it was magic back in the day.
- Well, it still can be.
A bunch of kids have kind of taken it over already.
The town should make it official.
- Well, it's probably just closed now
because it's not safe.
But you-- I'll make some calls.
- Really?
- Yeah.
Yeah, it's a nice idea, Sam.
Good on you.
?
Ruby: Look.
It's the exact crest that I saw in my vision.
Mina: No way.
- Yes way.
My Grandpa O helped me find it.
He's on his genealogy kick.
- And it's the Price family crest,
like Sam's family?
- Yeah, well his mom's anyway.
- Wait until he hears about this, he'll be so...
Oh.
Gabe: Oh, this is great.
Sam: I'm so sorry, you guys.
[door shaking]
[chains rattling]
Gabe: [sighs]
Did you do this?
- Not directly.
- Not directly.
Got it.
- Sam, what happened.
- [sighs]
My mom happened.
I just gotta know, what was she thinking?
Paula: Oh no, no, no, no.
I mentioned this to the town works department
to make sure it wasn't dangerous but the--
They were supposed to make it safe,
not lock you out.
- Well they did.
And Gabe was working on
like a grassroots youth group kind of thing too.
- Ouch.
Okay, let's um, let's fix it then.
We'll figure it out.
- Figure it out how?
- I'm not sure yet.
But I've heard that apple-pecan pie
is excellent at stimulating the old cerebral cortex, huh?
Why don't we try that?
Girls, you wanna join us?
Ruby: Uh, no that's okay, you go ahead.
- Apple-pecan pie?
- A family crest?
- Could it have been Miss Price's voice?
- Definitely.
Which means, there goes our wisher.
[sighs]
Sam: My mom, the wisher.
Not sure what she'd wish for though,
life's pretty good.
- Well, it's not just about her.
"I wish he knew the whole story."
There's a he involved too.
Mina: And the he must be him.
He's the hugest he in her heart.
Sam: Well, maybe.
But, we tell each other everything now.
We've worked through a lot of stuff.
- You tell her everything?
Sam: Pretty much.
It's better to confess up front
than get caught after.
- And she doesn't keep any secrets from you?
- Not that I'd care about.
So the he could be anybody.
My mom knows a lot of people.
The wish must be about one of them.
- Shouldn't you be more excited
that your mom is the wisher?
- You see the looks on everybody's faces?
I'm more worried
about how I'm gonna survive the next four years.
- Exactly.
And we'll fix it.
I felt so bad about messing up your idea.
I just wanted to check in and to tell you
that I'm making things right.
I got a hold of Henry Hartley.
- Henry Hartley.
Paula: Yeah, the county commissioner.
We, we've been on a few committees together.
Henry is the best and willing to listen to ideas.
Ruby: Oh, it sounds like he's very special to you.
- She.
It's Henrietta
but her friends call her Henry.
Mina: So, who is special to you,
male wise?
- Yeah.
- Uh, a lot of people, I guess.
Anyway, Henry says
that I can pitch some ideas for the hall,
just like you wanted.
- Seriously?
Paula: Yeah.
- Can I help?
Paula: Are you kidding?
With your passion and my connections
we'll have that place open in no time.
[giggles]
- Uh.
[clears throat]
Speaking of your connections,
who would you say are the best ones?
Sam: I'll, uh, get you a list.
Now if you don't mind, we're busy.
Paula: Yeah we are.
Ruby: How does Miss Price know so many people?
- Putting them into categories helped.
It's not that many when you think of it
as five huge groups.
- And then, we need to track them all down,
talk to them,
and find out if they fit the wish or not.
- Welcome to the most labor-intensive wish ever.
Luckily I have the solution.
[door dings]
- You're planning on calling everyone?
- Never said it was a good solution.
?
- Gabriel, I won't bore you with explanations,
just two words.
Rooftop patio.
- Yes, council's up to speed.
- And done.
Library's back open,
booked a space for a community meeting.
All my fellow youths are on board.
- And now...
- We convince the powers that be.
Liam: Have I got some news for you.
Daniel: Do I wanna hear this?
- She said she'll think about it.
- You talked to mom and she actually might come?
- I can be charming.
Daniel: You can, just not usually with mom.
- Okay.
[sighs]
Let's talk about it.
- That's not usually something--
- No, I know.
But, I know things now I didn't know before.
This well has turned my whole life upside down.
Before we didn't talk, but this is now, so...
- [stutters]
I don't even know where to start.
- Oh, I do.
You have issues with the way I treated you and your mom.
- That's the polite version, yes.
- I behaved badly.
- You left us.
Left me.
- And now that you're a dad, you're wondering...
- Yeah.
How could you do that?
- Hate.
I hated Tom
for what I thought he tried to do to you.
Hated myself.
Couldn't stand your mom's new husband.
- Chuck was a good dad.
- Yeah.
- He was there for me.
And you...
All the birthdays, dad,
all the important moments you...
[sighs]
Mom was so sad, for years it seemed like.
- I am sorry.
I want you both to know it.
This visit is the start.
?
Ruby: Park. Mina: Dead.
Ruby: Schultz. Mina: Dead.
Ruby: Singh. Mina: Dead.
Ruby: Walsh. Mina: Dead.
Ruby: Wong. Mina: Dead.
Ruby: Zoltnik. Mina: Dead.
Ruby: All deceased.
All gone.
- That's great.
I mean, it's not great for them or their families.
- Understood.
Um, and this is a list of people
she hasn't spoken to in a few years,
so we'll get rid of that too.
Finally, okay, a manageable list.
Mina: Okay, so, by definition,
a wish is from the heart about something important.
So this he is important to her.
- Yep.
And now, we just need an expert to rank 'em.
?
Paula: Climbing wall?
I thought we were on the same page here.
- Sure, if you erase your page.
- Oh, come on, Sam.
Everyone's looking to me
to preserve the building's heritage.
Sam: And an entirely different everyone
is counting on me to make it something cool.
- What's not cool about respecting the past?
- Because we all know what that means, mom.
It's more displays of old farm implements.
- We can't exactly gut the whole thing
and start from scratch.
They'd have my head.
- And if we don't, they'll have mine.
- I'm sorry Sam,
but I have an obligation to make good decisions here.
So a climbing wall, no, frisbee golf, no,
an escape room, no!
- That's what they want and I've made promises.
- So have I.
And that means--
- You're not taking me seriously,
and you never have 'cause you're just old.
Old fashioned.
And besides, there's nothing
in that old falling-down building
that's worth preserving anyways.
- Yes.
When things get old
we do tend to discount their worth.
But not this time, Samuel.
?
Daniel: [on phone] So you're actually gonna be here.
Wow.
You wanna stay over with us?
We got room for everybody.
Carol: No, no, I uh, I wanna see you and Ruby.
But do I really believe in the new, improved Liam?
- Turned over new leaves before.
Carol: Yeah, and there's always another leaf
under the first one.
- Poison Ivy sometimes.
Carol: Oh.
Well, Ruby is definitely worth the drive.
Hey, what about you?
Is there anybody new and special in your life?
- Mom?
Carol: Okay, got it.
Love you.
Smooch emoji.
Daniel: Love you too, mom.
See you soon.
Carol: See ya soon.
?
Sam: Do you mind if I put one up?
Arya: Is this the old building
with the Georgian facade?
- Why, you hate that place?
- Oh no, I love that place.
It's classic, it just screams restore me.
What, you want to turn it into a club or something.
- Kind of, yeah,
a place for people our age to hang out.
- First, there is no our age.
I can drive and boat and rent my own apartment.
- Yeah, and I can't order off the kid's menu anymore.
The point is,
I wanna make it a space for all of us.
- Sure, but,
everyone over 30 in this town wants to turn it
into a mausoleum.
I mean a museum.
Sam: Good one.
- No, seriously they do.
Historical Society is all over it.
- Was my mom a part of it?
Arya: Yeah, and half the early bird special said
they're looking for something
to designate the place historic
so that it can't be gutted.
- Historic?
- Yeah.
I mean, good luck with that though,
it's a great spot.
But not that special, right?
- But good enough for a climbing wall.
Arya: I love that.
I'm trying to get into this design school
in Europe,
and I could really use this to hone my skills.
Could I...
- Twist my arm.
- It's really up to you...
?
Arya: Hey.
Sam: Oh hi, Arya.
How's it going?
Arya: Pretty good.
Sam: Great.
You guys like what you see?
Awesome.
[indistinct conversations]
Ruby: Mr. Pritchard!
Mr. Pritchard, can I ask you something?
Mr....
What is going on?
Mr. Pritchard.
Oh yeah, I'm faster than you.
Mr. Pritchard, I know you can hear me.
- Oh Ruby, didn't see you there.
- Yes you did, what's going on?
Why aren't you talking to me.
- 'Cause you could be a mole.
That's why.
Sent to gather intel.
I can't talk to you till this is over.
Ruby: Okay, I have no opinion on all this hall business,
I'm just trying to help someone.
- As you do.
- Exactly, so,
who means the most to Miss Price,
or like top three, it's to help, I promise.
- There's Sam obviously.
Da Vinci, her horse, so that's important,
maybe third.
And I'd say between them, Paxton.
- And who's he again?
- Half-brother.
He lives on that lonely stretch
between Emerald and Troy.
He's not off the grid but he's not quite on it either.
- Interesting.
Thanks Mr. Pritchard.
- Not so loud.
[loudly] And that's why we'll never agree.
- [chuckles]
?
I, I missed dinner.
Um, oh, sorry.
- Me too.
Mac and cheese is now Mac and congealed glop.
- Oh.
- Ruby, you got a lot, but dinner--
- Is something we said we'd all do,
I know, but I got a lead on this wish.
And this one is actu--
Daniel: Not more important than family.
Now speaking of,
your Grandpa O invited your grandma for a visit,
and she said yes.
- Oh.
- Mostly wants to see you.
- My day just got a whole lot better.
Mm.
Excellent glop.
[slow footsteps]
?
Paula: Oh.
?
Hm.
There must be something
of historical significance somewhere.
What are you?
?
[boards cracking]
[grunts]
[boards clattering]
[grunting]
?
[panting]
[chuckles]
What secrets are buried in here?
[papers rustling]
[gasp]
What?
Oh.
"These comedy kings tested new material...
"cross country tours...
a treat for rural fans."
Wow.
Including our little town, that's amazing.
[door clicks closed]
[keys clacking]
[clears throat]
- What's with the dog ate the slippers look?
- Just working on tomorrow's presentation.
- Oh yeah?
- Mm-hm.
Want something to drink.
- I'm good.
?
Why them?
?
?
In the '50s they were the world's biggest TV stars.
They workshopped "Who's on first"
on that tour,
that's the definition of historic.
- Wow, so why don't we know about this?
- What do you mean?
- This would still be the lead story
at the barbershop.
I mean, they still talk
about the time the weather guy stopped here
for some gas.
- But, she had the poster.
- So?
I still have the invite for my ninth birthday party,
even after it got cancelled because I got strep.
- So maybe this show didn't happen?
You know, the website didn't list
the actual tour stops.
I need to talk to an expert.
[phone keyboard clicking]
I got it.
National Comedy Museum in Jamestown, New York.
So that's all we know,
but if you have hard copies of any old records...
Yeah?
You have the actual itinerary?
?
- Secrets?
- Uh, yes, that Miss Price keeps from you?
- You don't waste any time, do ya?
- Well, let's just say I spent it all
on the 40-minute bike ride and the bus
and getting lost twice.
- Well, Paula does think
that you are the bee's knees so,
let's get to it.
What do you mean by secrets?
- Like, if she wished
that you knew the whole story about something,
what would it be?
- The whole story, meaning, what?
- Well, that's what I'm trying to figure out.
Are there any, like, holes in your relationship?
- Not really.
When Paula wants to tell me something,
she tells me, anything.
Work, health, money...
- Family?
- Oh, especially family.
Warts and all.
She tells me
about what all the cousins are up to,
and I tell her about when we were kids,
stuff that she was too little to remember.
In fact, she came by last week
and we went on and on about family history.
Ruby: Yeah, that goes back forever, right?
I mean, you guys even have your own family crest.
- We do.
And all this talking got me looking.
And I found this in the attic.
- [pants]
- I think Paula would love to see that.
?
Arya: Okay, so this tab has the PowerPoint and stats,
this one has my sketches,
maybe we save our big surprise for the end,
more of an impact.
- Yeah, surprise.
Good.
- Here, let me finish this.
- Okay.
Mina: Sam, hey, you okay?
- Yeah, yeah I'm all good, all good.
- 'Kay.
- Hey mom, I need to warn--
- Hi everyone.
Great to see so many friendly faces.
Paula, looking forward to the debate.
Lou, why don't you just start us off?
- Hey folks, might as well make this quick,
time is short,
some of us more than, than others.
There's a few t's to be crossed
and i's to be dotted,
but it's a pretty good bet
that the place will be designated historical, huh?
[chuckles]
Yeah, thanks to Paula's discovery here,
we outta be able to tap into some funding,
you know?
Spend it the right way
and uh, restore our little landmark, huh?
Put some plaques up, um, get some tables
and I'll be trouncing all of you at cribbage
in no time.
[chuckles]
- Okay, funding's good.
So, why don't we hear from the kids.
- You got this.
[applause]
- [sighs]
Hi.
So Radcliffe Hall is more than just a building.
It's an opportunity.
So it's time we looked not into the past,
but in the future.
This place could be about more
than plaques and cribbage.
It's about creating experiences,
shaping lives, and forging a way ahead.
Kendra: That's a nice sentiment,
but this is money in the bank.
In practical terms,
what are you bringing to the table.
- Uh, ideas, lots of ideas.
Kendra: In other words, no money.
Okay, well, Lou this is pretty straight forward.
You're going on to see what kind of funding
this historical event--
- Only, it never happened.
Kendra: Pardon me?
- That.
The show, it never happened.
That's why no one in town remembers it.
- Um, then explain why posters are--
- The posters were made but the show got cancelled.
I checked it out,
there was a big storm that weekend and,
the hall is not a landmark.
It is a broken-down pile of non-historical bricks,
but that's okay, because we can fix it,
not for the past, for the future.
Now, we may not have the funding,
yet,
but we do have a plan.
We've given this a lot of thought,
and if we open our minds to the possibilities,
we can make this building into something amazing.
[applause]
Thank you, thank you very much.
[applause]
Thank you.
- You know this is a risk, right?
It's not that I don't entirely trust you,
but I don't entirely trust you.
So I'm giving you the reins, but there are conditions.
- I love conditions.
- Bring on the conditions.
Kendra: I need to know that you can pull this off
on time and on budget.
- I love time.
Arya: All about those budgets.
- I'm on a plane Monday morning,
so I need a package in my hands by Sunday at 7.
I want numbers, partnerships, and the guarantee
that you're working with adults
that I know and trust.
Otherwise, all this optimism and generosity goes away.
Good luck, kids.
Arya: This is amazing!
There he is, star of the show last night.
Sam: I hope you're right.
Ruby: Uh, hey.
Sam: Ruby, hey.
- Sam, uh, I heard you killed it.
- Well...
- That would be correct.
- Um, can I talk to you?
- Yeah, yeah, just one second.
- Okay.
- Uh, listen, I was wondering,
we needed some help with your mom's wish.
Do you think you could fill in
some of the blanks about this?
- Family crest, right?
Yeah, last week
my mom and Uncle Pax blah blah blahed
about all that family stuff so long
my homework started to look fun.
- Well, did they say anything that--
- Look, I'm on a deadline, okay?
If we don't have this thing figured out by tonight
it's all toast.
So, if you don't mind.
?
Ruby: I don't get it.
Sam couldn't be less interested
in his family's crest or his mom's wish.
He's all deadlines, deadlines, deadlines.
- I mean, I do sort of get it.
He's gotta do his own thing sometimes.
Besides, he is adopted
so it's not like it's his family past, not really.
- Right, like the old Price family stories.
- Old family stories?
You must be helping Paula today.
- Well, in a way, yes, but...
Man 2: She's been in here researching
quite a bit lately.
- About the Price family crest?
- No, she was looking up the Grey family.
But there's none of them in Emerald,
at least, not anymore.
- The Grey family.
- Grey is the name of Sam's birth mother.
Um, Mr. Brody, like you said, we're trying to help Paula,
but, well, um...
- You need to know where she left off
in her Grey family research.
Well, I know she searched genealogy books and the web
but she hit a dead end.
- Is that unusual?
Mr. Brody: Oh, not at all.
Some families in town, like the Price family,
they can look up what their great-great-granduncle spent
on horseshoe nails.
For other families, like the Greys,
their history is unknown.
Must be sad
not knowing how you're connected to the past.
Ruby: That's it.
Maybe Paula saw that Sam felt alienated
when her and her brother were talking
about family stuff.
- So Miss Price dug into Sam's history
so he could connect to his past but she failed.
- The he is Sam,
and she wishes that he knew the whole story
about his own past.
- But she couldn't find it anywhere.
- I need to talk to Miss Price.
?
Uh, Miss Price?
- No, I really don't understand,
you see, 'cause I was led to believe that we'd be--
Yeah, well that makes no sense to me at all.
Woman 2: [over phone] Look, we're going
through a difficult time right now.
- Yeah, I know.
Woman 2: So that just won't work for us.
- Yeah.
Woman 2: So please, respect our wishes.
- Goodbye.
Woman 2: Bye now.
- Hey Ruby.
Sam's not here, honey.
- You, you okay?
I um, I know it must've been weird when Sam--
- Oh, no, no it's, it's not that.
No, uh, I mean,
I was a little embarrassed of course,
but I'm happy for Sam.
It's part of being a mom.
Your kid's joy is your joy.
And your kid's pain is...
your pain.
I'm okay, it's okay.
What is it you needed, honey?
- Um, your brother wanted me to show you this.
Paula: [small sob]
- Oh, oh no, I, I've made you more sad.
- It's okay, it's just not great timing,
that's all.
[sniffs]
- Does it have to do with the Greys?
Foster said you were asking about them.
- Ah, yep, I was looking for more information
for Sam about his past.
Just fun stories so he knows where he comes from.
But uh, I hit a dead end.
- Is that what this is about?
- Oh, I should put that away.
- Did they shut you down?
- Ruby, I love you very much, but you are nosy
and Sam can't know anything about that.
- But, but they're not being fair.
I mean, did you call them?
- Ruby O'Reilly, this cannot leave this room.
I did call them, and they said...
This couple who are Sam's only connection to his past,
to his birth family, they...
they said never contact us again.
Ever.
- Poor Sam.
- Yeah.
Poor Sam.
?
Ruby: It was awful, Mina.
I've never seen Miss Price so upset.
And, now I'm home to get the family stories
around the dinner table
when Sam and his mom can't do that.
Mina: [over the phone] It doesn't seem fair.
- 'Cause it's not.
And I bet Grandpa O
can't wait to start telling stories.
I gotta go.
Mina: [over phone] Good luck.
- Couldn't remember if Carol liked red lilies or yellow,
so I got orange.
Ruby: Huh.
- She's gonna love them.
- Great.
- Perfect timing.
Smooth enough?
- Mm.
Smooth as butter.
- Probably because of all the butter.
He wants to make amends and with you here,
might just stay civilized enough to do this.
- I'm glad I'm such a positive influence.
- Tonight could be pretty epic,
big leap forward for this family,
so he's feeling the pressure.
- What can I do?
- Just get him talking.
- [sighs]
Liam: It was Apple Fest 1975.
The old community hall exhibits, biggest squash,
best needlecraft.
One kid even sculpted the bust of Nefertiti
out of shortening.
- Hm, sounds great.
Until the heatwave.
- Yeah.
I entered the baking contest on a dare.
That was cutthroat.
Your grandma won first place, no mercy.
- And was there a third place?
Liam: Of course.
Yeah, lost that one too.
- And was there a category for handwriting for kids?
- Absolutely, why?
[whooshing]
- Because I think I get it now.
Liam: Get what?
- Uh, I -I -I--
Tell dad I'll be right back,
I-I-I have to do one quick thing.
[door closes]
Uh, hey, there you are.
- [grunts]
Not for long.
I have to figure this out and I have like three hours.
- You close?
- Well, our part's done
but we still need a geezer to help.
I mean, a respected consultant.
- Uh, hey, where's your mom?
- Went to visit my Uncle Pax.
Is this about my mom's wish?
Is everything okay with her?
- Actually, no.
Sam: Yeah, my mom seemed sad,
and I feel like it's my fault but I don't know what to do.
I'm afraid to just make it worse.
- But I do think that the wish will help.
And I-I know I'm close,
I just need to ask her one thing.
- Like?
- It's gonna sound weird but the handwriting clue.
- Yeah.
- You know about it?
- No, I mean,
yes that does sound weird you'd need to ask her.
- Oh, no chance.
Pax is in a dead zone between cell towers.
- Uh, okay.
Guess I have to stick to analog technology,
my bike.
?
- Where's Ruby?
- We talked about this, she'll be here.
- Maybe give her a call?
- No, like I said, she'll be here.
[car honks]
- Oh, here we go.
[sighs]
Ruby: [panting]
Paxton: Well, look who's back,
my friend with all the questions.
Ruby: Miss Price, did you win third place
for penmanship at the fall fair
when you were a kid?
- See?
- Hello Ruby O'Reilly, it's nice to see you too.
- Did you?
- Random question, but I did.
Yeah, why?
- Do you still have what you wrote?
- I, I don't think so.
I mean, it, it was on display for years
but I...
I guess it could be in that closet but I--
Ruby: Okay, this is gonna sound weird,
but we have to go get it now, please.
- I'm having tea--
Ruby: Please?
I think it'll help with Sam.
- How?
- I, I don't know for sure
but you just have to trust me.
- Okay.
Put the bike in the trunk.
- If it still exists it's probably...
[grunts]
in this mess someplace.
Ruby: [panting]
Both: [straining]
Ruby: Um.
- K to five, 1963.
I, I think that's it.
Oh.
Oh, thank you.
Oh.
[chuckles]
Oh.
Not bad penmanship, huh?
- Impressive.
You were what, five?
- Mm.
[chuckles]
- I think maybe you should look at this.
?
Girl: [distantly] My family, by Paula Imogen Price.
My family is very important to me,
my family does things that are fun.
In the morning we sing the wakeup song,
and at bedtime we say goodnight
to everything in our house.
Paula: [chuckles]
Girl: [distantly] Goodnight fireplace,
goodnight bathtub.
- "At supper we tell stories about Great-Grandpa Carl,
and Aunty Lane."
Oh.
"And Uncle Otto's octopus.
"A family makes you big, bigger than just you.
"My mom says our family stretches back forever,
"and it will stretch into the future forever too,
"including today and every day to come.
That's the whole story."
- The whole story?
- Yeah.
- Interesting choice of words, right?
- It's not wh-- I meant something else.
- Maybe you did, but,
also maybe Sam should know what's in there.
- But why Ruby?
I, I don't--
Ruby: It'll all come together, soon,
I hope.
- I tried to get Sam's stories for him.
But I failed, I, I failed him.
Sam.
- What are you guys doing here?
- Huh.
Nothing, really.
You?
- Nothing.
- Well that's not nothing.
Talk to me.
- [sighs]
The trusted advisor, couldn't get one.
Everyone over the age of 30 thinks that we're uh,
too radical, or disrespectful.
Maybe we are.
- I'm sorry.
- Why should you be sorry?
I should be, I embarrassed you.
I was too stuck on what I wanted.
Paula: Oh no, no honey, no.
Mm-mm.
?
Liam: [sighs]
This is nice, isn't it, Carol?
Mm-hm.
- The Brussels sprouts, fantastic.
I wouldn't have known what these were
if you hadn't told me.
Hmf.
Daniel: Ruby didn't know for two solid years.
Finally caught on and called them stealth sprouts.
- Oh.
[chuckles]
- You have to take my word for it.
Sam: TO and PP.
Is that you and Tom O'Reilly?
- It is.
This place, this old place.
I fell in love here, you know?
On this dance floor.
We'd been friends, but,
then a Gordon Lightfoot came on and,
"If you could read my mind, love,
what a tale my thoughts could tell."
And, uh, they put that up right over there
and I would sit right here and admire it.
- "Goodnight bathtub"?
We'd do that when I was little.
And the wakeup song.
Paula: Yeah, but the stories, see?
That's what's missing,
and I wanted that for you, Sam.
That grounded feeling of being connected
to something bigger through your birth family.
I wanted that for you but I,
I couldn't get it.
- Oh.
That's why...
Paula: I'm so sorry
I couldn't make it happen for you.
Please, just know that I really tried.
- Mom.
I know you feel bad about this,
but I don't.
Really.
You're what makes me feel bigger.
Just us, our family, our teeny tiny unit of two.
Being apart like this, that made me feel small.
- Oh.
Sam: I just wanna be Team Price again.
We can start writing our own stories together.
- Yeah.
Sam: Soon it'll be, hey mom, remember the time
you showed me little Paula's handwriting
and it was the cutest thing I ever saw?
Paula: [chuckles]
Hey, I remember that.
- Or hey mom, remember the time
I had the stupid idea to tear this all down.
Heh, good thing
I didn't get an adult consultant after all.
- Well, that's not true.
- Come on mom, I asked everybody.
- Didn't ask me.
- But Miss Harley...
Paula: Oh, don't worry about her.
I babysat her for five years.
[quietly] I know all of her secrets.
?
- Let's make this place great together, 'kay?
Paula: Okay.
- For everybody.
Paula: Yeah.
Sam: You know what?
- What?
- We'll save that brick even.
Put it on display
next to the vintage vegetable peelers.
- Smack dab in the middle
of the extreme frisbee course.
Ruby: Our history's built on moments like this.
When you think about it, right here, right now,
we're looking at tomorrow's connection
to the past,
and spending that time together,
sharing these moments,
is the way we all get stronger.
Or alternatively, get into trouble.
Paula: Right.
- And maybe video game station
over there.
- Uh-huh.
[door opens]
[door clicks closed]
[dish clacks]
- Where's Grandpa O?
Daniel: Out for a walk.
- And where's Grandma?
- Home.
Started off okay.
Small talk, catching up,
and then Grandpa said something without thinking.
Grandma snapped at him and...
she pulled the plug before it got worse.
- I missed them.
- You missed them.
[sighs]
I gotta ask, why?
- [shuddering breath]
The wish.
- That well's been eating a lot of your time lately.
Family time, school time.
Can't some wishes wait?
Ruby: Yes.
[sniffs]
Except, no.
They all feel like emergencies,
like, if I waste a minute, I'll miss the moment.
- You are missing moments.
Ruby: [shuddering breath]
Daniel: Well, maybe give your Grandma Carol a call.
- [sniffs]
Sorry I missed you Grandma.
Carol: Oh honey, sorry I missed you...
Ruby: Sometimes all you can do is reach out
and hope that the other side reaches back
so that your strife turns into strength.
It was great
to be a part of Sam and his mom's big healing moment,
but what about ours?
Our healing turned back into hurt.
[door clicks closed]
It's a kind of hurt
I've been feeling a lot lately.
Letting people down, letting my family down,
it's all been just too much.
But never again.
[exhales]
