[phone rings]

Ruby: Where is it?

Gotta be here somewhere.

Pleeease be in here.

[phone rings]

Found it!

[phone rings]

Mina.

Hey, sorry about that!

Mina: It's okay.

- Um, yeah,

I can meet you by our lockers.

Uh, I'm just gonna grab some...

[enchanting chime]

Mina: Ruby?

Ruby, you there?

- Actually, I might be a bit late.

- Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa.

I thought you were eating breakfast,

I made apple spice waffles.

- Um, luckily, I can take one to go!

Daniel: [sighs]

[whimsical music]

[magical whoosh]

[happily grunts]

[wings flapping]

[moving vocals]

[wings flapping]

[music intensifies]

[flame rustling]

[magical whoosh]

[grunts]

[gasps]

- I wish I could rest in peace.

[music abruptly stops]

[pants heavily]

Viole?

[whimsical theme]

?

?

?

Sam: That's the wisher?

Viole, like your

great-great-great-something that showed you

where that creepy mirror was buried?

Mina: Hi.

Sam: How creepy was she this time?

- I'd say about a nine.

Only this time, she wasn't pointing at a clue,

she is the wisher.

- A wish from beyond the grave?

Goth vibes.

So, a long dead soul can't rest,

wishing for what, exactly?

- Well, that's the question.

I mean, she's helped me before

so I feel like I need to return the favor.

- So, what's with the dove?

Also, who's Evelyn

and what does L na Marbh mean?

- All Souls' Day?

You guys into RPG's too?

- RPG's, yeah!

Love those.

- You don't actually...

[sighs]

It means role playing games.

Like, in the Forest of Maknar,

I'm a warrior of the red branch.

But, L na Marbh is, uh,

Gaelic for the Irish version of the Day of the Dead.

- Of course, it is.

All Souls' Day, yeah!

Seb: It's when the veil

between life and death is thin,

and the souls of ancestors come to visit.

- It's okay, I wasn't planning on

ever sleeping again anyways.

Seb: It's so cool, though!

It's when you're supposed

to give restless souls with unfinished business

a sense of peace.

- As in rest in peace.

Sebastian: Exactly, basically the ultimate goal

of dead people everywhere.

Mina: And when is this day supposed to be?

Sebastian: November 2nd.

And if you miss it, you lose.

You have to wait a whole year until next time.

- November 2nd, that's tomorrow.

Mina: So, what do you think

is the best preferred date on a wish?

Ruby: Well, I'm guessing it's not next year!

Which means,

I have to finish it by tomorrow at midnight or...

I lose.

Mr. Lutes: Okay, everyone, calm down.

Don't get too excited, I have arrived.

Sam: Hi, Mr. Lutes.

Mr. Lutes: Definitely excited.

Okay, that's-- yep.

Miss Amani, hi.

Yep...

[mumbles]

Okay, hello, homeroom!

Mina: Morning, Mr. Lutes.

- Hi, Dad.

- Thank you for that.

Um, does anyone know where Kevin Murphy is?

Is he late, absent, dearly departed?

Mina: Uh, nothing fatal, sir.

He probably just ate too much Halloween candy,

like every year.

- Did not need to know that, Miss Amani.

Who is taking the attendance?

Yep, great, go, go, go!

And...

who has a topic for their group project

for science class?

- (slowly) We do?

Mr. Lutes: Ooh.

Tell me everything.

- I would rather surprise you with it at dinner.

- Hmm. That good, huh?

- Mm-hm. Mm-hm.

- That good.

[school bell rings]

Hey, group project friends.

Um, can we talk about our topic?

'Cause, uh, not all of us can hide

from our science teacher,

since he literally lives at my house.

Mina: Right, ouch, okay, yeah.

Um... let's decide on a topic during lunch?

- Okay.

Uh, Mina.

Uh, okay.

I need to get this wish done by tomorrow night,

but I don't have a lot of time,

so I need to check the log book

to see if Viole wrote any clues.

- Now? We have class.

Ruby: I could skip it, just this once?

- Just this once?

Ruby: Okay, just once this week.

But...

[sighs]

Mina, this is a wish from my ancestor.

- Okay, fine.

I'll take notes for you, again.

But hurry back.

[upbeat music plays]

[gasps]

[door closes]

Dad?

[instrumental music plays]

Donnel: As the first O'Reillys

on these shores,

the first to till the soil,

the first to glean the bounteous harvest,

alas, we were also the first to meet tragedy

when our dearest Viole, not yet 20,

succumbed to the captain of these men of death:

consumption.

Viole: [strained gasping]

[coughing]

[continues gasping]

Evelyn...

[strained breaths]

[breathing ceases]

[mournful music]

Ruby: Evelyn?

Her last word was Evelyn?

Uh...

Evelyn... Evelyn...

Um...

"Praise be for Evelyn.

"Such a way she has with the gardens

"and such stories we share of fantastical adventures--

in Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseilles."

[pages crinkle]

Wow, they were inseparable.

[quiet gasp]

Oh, no.

Viole: [quiet sobs]

Go on--

[sniffs]

Evelyn, my sweet erstwhile sister.

[sniffs]

Dare I dream we meet again--

[shaky inhale]

In this life or the next.

- Viole had a sister?

[cell phone rings]

[gasps]

Um...

Uh, hey, Mina?

Mina: (over the phone) Where are you?

- Um, listen,

I'm kind of in the middle of the Viole thing

right now, can--

Mina: We need you, what's going on?

- Well, it's, just,

something weird happened with her sister, and--

Mina: I'm listening.

- I... bet she can't R.I.P. until she knows what!

Mina: I get it, I'll cover.

- You will?

Mina: Yes.

- Okay, thank you, I-I owe you guys!

Mina: Bye.

[door shuts]

Woman 1: Hi!

Mina: Ruby's up to her eyeballs,

she told us to go ahead

and choose the project topic without her.

- Okay.

15-minute presentation

on how science played a part in Emerald's past.

Could my dad be more vague?

- Okay... ideas, go!

- How 'bout volcanoes of Emerald?

- There are no volcanoes in Emerald.

- Exactly! Should be easy.

- [sighs]

This is gonna be a looong project.

- Well, at least we get to do it together.

[whimsical music]

[sighs]

[footsteps down the stairs]

Ruby: Ooh!

- Why aren't you in school?

- Uh, obviously, it's because

I missed my granddad so much,

I just had to come home!

- You really think I'm that gullible?

Well, you're right.

Whatcha got there?

- You first.

- Oh, still workin' on the family history.

Sorting through stuff that has value

from random junk Tom picked up at yard sales.

Everything from bric-a-brac to do-hickeys to what-nots.

Ruby: That's kinda cool.

What does it say?

- Uh, I think it's Latin.

Denique sine periculo, and some French lady's name.

You want it?

- Uh, not really my style.

- Ah, well.

Ruby: But I was wondering,

what have you found about

the original O'Reilly settlers?

- Oh, Donnel and his clan!

Well, bits and pieces, whaddaya wanna know?

- Tell me about his daughter, Evelyn.

- Evelyn? You mean Viole.

- Nnno, her sister, Evelyn.

- Trick question?

Because Donnel had five children:

Viole, and her four brothers.

- Four brothers, that's it?

- [grunts] Pretty sure.

Ruby: S-s-s-so no sister, no Evelyn?!

Liam: Nope!

[riveting music]

- Then who was she?

[papers rustling]

Evelyn mystery girl, who are you?

A... family member, a neighbor?!

Liam: Well,

Victorian families were known for having unusual pets.

Perhaps an owl or badger.

- Okay, noted, Granddad.

- I also found this.

Ruby: What's that?

- Old farm ledger.

Bushels harvested, equipment depreciation,

that sort of thing.

- Anything in there

about Evelyn, the lovable badger?

- Uh, well,

they list farm workers and household staff.

Yep, McKay Arnold, 24, farm labor.

Marshall Stewart, 34, laborer.

- Evelyn! 14! Housemaid!

Oh, that must be her, but there's no last name.

Liam: Uh, not here, it just says Evelyn.

Ruby: So, what else could this tell us?

- Well, if she was a domestic,

she probably stayed in the house.

As the only two girls...

wouldn't be surprised

if she and Viole shared a room.

- Maybe Evelyn and Viole became friends?

Close enough even that Viole could call her sister.

- Mm-hm.

Ruby: So, if I can figure out what her last name is,

then, well,

maybe I can figure out what happened to her

and what Viole's wish means!

[phone dings]

Oh, I gotta get back to school

before I really get in trouble.

Would you mind helping me with this wish, Grandpa?

- You mean strike out into the unknown

and unearth the identity of this mysterious Evelyn?

Sure, why not?

- Thank you!

Mwah!

- Hmm.

- You thought elements were great

on their own,

wait till you see what happens

when they get together.

Miss O'Reilly!

Nice of you to join us.

- Uh, glad to be here!

- Your team was working on their project over lunch,

is it going well?

- I think so!

I mean, look at this team.

- Yyyeah.

Inspiring.

Okay, let's get back to ionic compounds, shall we?

Like, what happens

when lithium and oxygen combine,

like this.

[phone dings]

Okay.

Whose phone is that?

You guys know the new rule:

no phones in the halls, no phones in class--

Ruby: I-I know, Mr. Lutes, I'm sorry, but, I--

I gotta go, this is a family emergency.

[adventurous music]

Mina: (quietly) This better be important.

- (quietly) It is!

My grandpa found Evelyn.

?

Man 2: So, you're looking for Evelyn,

the, uh, housemaid girl?

- My Grandpa O said you'd know.

- It's that big one, just over there.

- That's her?

- It's her folks'.

Ruby: Russell Harold Cunningham,

1792 to 1854.

Beloved husband of Lisbeth Sadie Cunningham,

1799 to 1854.

- We don't have good records

on people that were buried back then,

but I, uh, I wrote down what I got.

[crows caw distantly]

- Russell and Lisbeth arrived 1850

at Castle Harbor.

Survived by daughter Evelyn Beth Cunningham,

born 1840, Dorset.

- England.

South coast.

Ruby: So, if both of her parents died in 1854,

that means...

Evelyn was orphaned at 14.

And then taken in by the O'Reilly's

as a domestic, so...

shouldn't she be buried here, too?

- She should be, but she isn't.

- Unless she got married, changed her last name!

Are there any Evelyn anything-else's

from around then?

- 20-some souls.

- [sighs] That's a lot of Evelyns.

Need to narrow it down.

Marriage records!

Those will have her old name, and her changed one!

This will be so easy!

[laughs]

[panting]

This is so hard.

- What's wrong?

- All I wanted were some marriage records,

but the guy at the front desk

gave me the same old six to eight weeks,

and that's only if there's no administrative delays.

- Typical.

Well, things aren't much better here

with operation science project.

- Yeah, what's going on over there?

- Let's just call it an intergroup conflict.

Sam's doing a speculative science piece

on the eruption of Mount Emerald,

and Seb is doing his

on the devastating effects of having a teacher parent.

Seb: [annoyed groan]

Mina: And I'm doing the most capital 'd' dull topic ever.

The root quenchers:

orchard irrigation throughout the ages.

Ruby: Oh, wow, from boring to boring-est.

Oh, uh, hey, Grandpa O.

You look proud of yourself.

- Well, got your message,

decided to swing by that office myself.

Turns out that little pencil pusher's boss

is good ol' Sheila Peacham.

- Who?

- Peachy!

Known her since fourth grade.

Lemme just say,

little of that O'Reilly charm goes a long way.

[thud]

- Boom!

At 17, Evelyn Beth Cunningham was engaged

to an Emmett Lloyd Pierce, 35.

Ruby: Okay, so, all we need to do

is look up Evelyn Pierce, and then we--

- Boom!

Did that.

No mention of an Evelyn Pierce anywhere.

My guess is the, uh, marriage didn't happen.

- Uh, no, but why do you think--

- Baaaam!

Check that.

Emmett Lloyd Pierce, died 1875,

unmarried, childless.

You're welcome.

- Unmarried, but I--

- Boom!

Town census, 1858.

The last mention of an Evelyn Beth Cunningham

was, um, in the employ of a Donnel O'Reilly,

and then next year, nothing.

- Nothing?!

- And nothing since.

It's like she just--

[fvvt!]

Disappeared.

But don't you disappear, now.

- I'll give you a call soon, Peach.

- Boom!

[heels clacking]

[forced chuckle]

Ruby: So, that explains no gravestone,

Evelyn didn't die in Emerald, she simply vanished instead!

- Okay, looking for anything strange

between 1858 and 1859.

- Check around All Soul's Day,

November 2, 1858.

[low whirring]

- Look! A magical mystery.

Ruby: "Traveling conjurer astonishes town

"in public display.

"On a mild fall evening of November 2, 1858,

"Emerald impresario, Abbott Radcliffe,

"summoned to town

"the delightful wizardry of itinerant illusionist,

Great Gambini."

- Radcliffe!

The crazy gabillionaire adventure guy!

Ruby: "Townfolk thrilled at the magical merriment

created by this curious conjurer."

[carnival music]

Gambini: Gather 'round, everyone!

Gather 'round!

Be prepared, one and all, to witness

the most extraordinary performance of our time.

Hithertofore unseen feats of illusion, mystery,

and magic.

And who will be my first volunteer?

[audience chuckles, gasps]

You.

Please, welcome to the stage

my lovely and fearless miracle-to-be!

[applause]

Ruby: "For his final act, the magician selected

"a young lady from his admirers,

"and promised an illusion so magnificent

it would be thrilled over for the ages."

[doors squeak]

[audience gasps]

Woman 2: Wow!

Man 3: Wow.

Woman 3: Oh, my goodness!

Gambini: Please, if you would, my dear.

[audience chattering]

Woman 4: Oh, brave girl!

[curtain flutters]

Ruby: "With a dramatic flourish,

"Gambini turned the girl into a dove.

"To the delight of the crowd,

"the bird soared up heavenwards

"and the girl...

"she was never seen again.

"To this day, all Emerald wonders

"what became of that brave, innocent volunteer,

Evelyn Beth Cunningham."

[quiet gasp]

Ruby: We've got an orphan girl

engaged to an older man

and a magic show disappearance.

Mina: But was it really magic or was it something else?

Seb: (excitedly) Magic?

Mina: Uh... yeah!

Uh, that's a great idea for our project, uh,

scientific work on Emerald's magical past.

Uh, Seb?

- I love it!

My topic was lame, anyway.

Magic is so my thing!

- Really? That's so interesting.

- Yeah, it was pre-D&D days,

but my show had music and smoke.

Everything but talent,

but I did do a deep, derpy dive.

Ruby: So, let's say

a Victorian-age magician made a girl disappear

right here in the open on this exact street.

- Well, the girl couldn't have actually disappeared

into thin air.

I mean, did she know the magician?

Ruby: I doubt it.

She was engaged to someone else in town

at the time.

Seb: Okay, but...

happily engaged?

- He was 17 years older than her.

Mina: But, I mean, if they were in love,

how heartbreaking would it be

to lose your fianc like that?

And what does that have to do with the wish?

Seb: Wish?

Mina: I, I, uh, the-- I meant,

the wish for the trick to work out well.

- Mm-hm.

- Yeah, I'm fascinated by that, too.

My hunch?

A classic mirror illusion, with a secret compartment.

- Wait, so you think

the magician had a mirror inside the box?

Seb: Sure!

But a trick like that

requires the volunteer to be in on it.

I'll do some more research and get back to you guys.

See you later, partners!

- I'm sorry!

Seb is totally trustworthy.

- [sigh] Of course you would think that.

- Could we just get back to the wish?

Let's focus on the clues.

Uh, so we have the return-to-sender letter,

and hidden under some floorboard,

so, let's look into that.

- Fine.

Mina: So, who do you think wrote it?

- Maybe someone who was heartbroken

after her disappearance.

- Like a fianc?

- Right!

So, let's find out what happened

to poor, lonely Emmett Pierce.

[exciting music builds]

Oh, and I know just who to ask.

- Thanks, Peach, you're a doll.

[chuckles]

Ruby: She found him?

- Yeah!

Emmett Pierce was quite notorious at the time.

She found him all over the old police blotters.

In and out of jail!

A brawler, apparently.

She even found his old police statements.

- He blames the magician

for running off with his fianc?

- Vowed revenge!

If he ever found 'em.

- No wonder Viole sounded so worried

in her log book entries.

Liam: I wouldn't be surprised

if Evelyn was in on the illusion

to get away from that ne'er-do-well.

Ruby: Did Emmett Pierce write that letter

to find her for revenge,

or did Viole write them

to make sure her friend was okay,

so she could--

Both: Rest in peace?!

- Yes!

[furniture squeaks]

[sighs]

Return to sender would mean return to here.

Hmm.

[nails tapping]

[grunts]

[curious music]

[sighs]

[knocks on wood]

[sighs]

[door opens]

[shoes clatter]

[knocks]

[sighs]

[door squeaks]

[door closes]

[sighs]

I've checked every floorboard--

[door rattles]

[music crescendos]

[magical whoosh]

[gasps quietly]

Except it's not a floorboard.

[thrilling music]

[sighs]

[wood scrapes]

[solid pop]

[grunts]

[sighs]

[exhales]

[fabric rustles]

?

[chuckles]

[trinkets clatter]

[grunts]

[paper rustles]

[music flourishes]

Evelyn Beth Cunningham.

General delivery...

France.

[paper rustles]

[poignant music]

Viole: "Dearest Evelyn, while I do worry,

"I hope this finds you safe and well.

"Please send a token back

"as a message that you have found harbor,

"and accept this flower from our garden

to recall our many joyous days past."

[moving vocal theme]

[magical whoosh]

[wings flapping]

[exhales]

[sighs]

[camera shutter clicks]

Mina: Yeah, you know it because it was in the wish!

I've seen 'em before too!

It's a quamash!

[running footsteps]

Which, we know

from our favorite limerick slash riddle,

be wary of deadly quamash!

- The limerick led us to the tunnels.

Mina: And another flower on a brick

I really shouldn't have touched.

[brick scrapes]

[metal bars rattling]

[clang]

Do you think the flower and the symbol in the tunnel

are related?

- Only one way to find out.

Mina: I'll call Sam.

Do you think we have time to check it out

before school tomorrow?

- No.

But let's do it anyway.

[phone rings]

- Hello?

Yes.

Hello, Vice Principal.

Meet the school counselor?

Is something wrong?

Is Ruby okay?

Oh?

Wait...

uh, yes, I can come by.

Thanks.

Ruby!

Ruby: Yeah?

- I just got a call from your vice principal,

he said I had to go see your school counselor.

Do you know what this is about?

- I-I don't know.

I left class early because, uh,

Grandpa sent me a lead on a wish and...

well, we kept at it, and...

Daniel: During school?

What were you thinking?

- Ruby needed help with a wish.

- No, no, no, no, no,

this wish business happens after school,

before school, or on weekends,

after homework.

Ruby: Dad, I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't have,

but this wish involves Viole,

and I have to solve it fast before tomorrow at midnight.

- Okay, well,

I'll handle things with the counselor,

but Ruby...

I get that you're committed to granting every wish,

but school is the most important thing.

(emphasizing) Okay?

Ruby: [sighs]

- You've got something, haven't you?

- Oh, yeah.

[exhilarating music]

[footsteps]

Ruby: It's right there.

Mina: Um...

[brick scrapes]

[metal clattering]

All: Whoa!

[clang]

Ruby: Um...

Sam: So, uh...

what are we looking for now?

- I don't know. Ruby?

Ruby: Honestly, I'm not really sure either.

Something else to do with the flower?

[mysterious music]

Here, help me.

[grunting]

?

[sighs]

[thunk]

[groans]

- I guess we could, uh, try a...

[sniffs]

[wood scrapes]

[grunts]

[wood scraping continues]

[click]

[bricks scrape]

All: Whoa.

[sweeping music]

Mina: They go on forever.

Ruby: Yeah.

These tunnels must stretch all across town.

Sam: Radcliffe's escape route.

If anyone was after him,

he could disappear whenever he wanted.

- Yeah, him and Evelyn.

It's an escape

from a bad marriage to a bad guy.

- Which makes Radcliffe a good guy.

He brought in the magic show, he built the tunnels.

- He must have been in on it, but...

where do we think the trick happened?

Mina: Okay, this blue dot here,

this is us.

- Okay, so, the library should be right here,

and the fountain would be right...

there.

Which means the magicians' trick

could have used the tunnels,

and then Evelyn would have disappeared through--

[gasp]

[knocking]

[stone scrapes]

Trap doors.

[chuckles]

Oh!

[stone slams]

Seb: If I wanted to make someone disappear...

where would they go?

There would have had to be a trap door...

somewhere right here.

[gasps]

Where did you come from?!

- Oh, well, we walked right up.

Must've been doing one of your, uh, deep dives.

- Deep, derpy dive.

Sam: Only explanation.

Seb: Yeah, maybe.

- So, you think the magic trick used a,

a trap door?

Seb: Had to be.

And I think I know how, too.

The wooden box that Great Gambini used

likely had a classic mirror illusion

combined with a trap door that allowed Evelyn

to switch places with the dove.

[dove coos]

Seb: Evelyn slid down through a trap door

just as the magician opened the box.

And the dove flew out.

[running footsteps]

Ruby: So, if Evelyn did use the tunnels to escape,

then she could have never been seen again?

- Yeah...

if there are tunnels.

But I can't seem to find the trap door,

so, they must have been paved over.

That's too bad.

- Yeah.

Any tunnels under here would've collapsed

or got filled in by now, right?

Seb: Yeah, maybe.

It would have been cool to see.

Serious engineering for the time.

I mean, that's the science angle

for our project.

Speaking of which, uh,

we should probably get to class before Mr.--

Teacher-- Dad realizes we're late.

Again.

- If we could use the tunnels,

we'd be there faster.

- Yeah, but then we'd have to tell Seb everything and...

coming!

[chuckles]

- So, now we know how Evelyn did it.

- But why didn't Evelyn send Viole a message

saying that she was safe?

Did something happen, I...

Or maybe she did.

- What?

[exciting music]

- Um, that!

- What about it?

- Uh, hang on.

That comb.

My grandpa had one just like it

in this box of junk at my house.

Sam: No, way.

Ruby: Yeah.

But, uh, when he showed it to me,

it had something inscribed on it, uh...

Denique sine periculo.

[gasps]

Sam: Latin.

Means "finally out of danger."

Ruby: Well, that makes sense,

and it had a French woman's name.

- So, you're thinking that's from Evelyn?

- Um, maybe, it might have been a message

to say that she made it, that she was safe.

- Okay, I get that part, but why the French name?

- Um...

"such stories we share of fantastical adventures--"

[gasp]

"in Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseilles"!

See?

General delivery, France!

So, Evelyn did escape

and start a new life under a new name

and sent the comb back to Viole

engraved with a message

to say that everything was okay!

- Why didn't Viole get it?

- Because...

she was dead.

[distant classroom chatter]

[door opens]

- Oh, Dan!

Daniel.

[chuckles]

I mean, Mr. O'Reilly.

- Uh, Leah, hi, what are you, uh...

- I think we have an appointment.

- Oh, y-you're Ms. ...

Miranda.

- Uh, listen, I can make this quick.

- Quick works.

Leah: It's about Ruby.

She's very impressive,

seems emotionally intelligent,

curious, ambitious.

- She is.

- Which is why I'm concerned

about Ruby's recent distractions.

- Distractions.

- She seems to be juggling a lot, and, uh,

skipping class on the regular.

- Wh-- um, whoa, whoa, whoa, skipping class?

Uh, I know that she skipped yesterday,

but on the regular?

That's...

- Distressing.

She's actually one skipped class away

from discipline.

We start with suspension--

- Oh, no, we don't, no,

we start with never skipping class again.

[chuckles]

[sighs]

- Is there anything you'd like me to know?

Anything I can help with?

- My kid has a huge heart,

and sometimes, she can't see around it.

Everything's gonna be okay.

Or it will be, after a long talk.

- Okay, then, I'll leave it with you.

- Okay, I'd better go.

And hopefully,

you never have to see me again.

I mean, here, in these--

not in general, because...

because, um--

okay!

I'm leaving now.

Leah: [chuckles]

Ruby: This is so...

romantic and tragic.

Sam: Yes, like our lives if we're late for class,

c'mon.

- Uh, hi, Grandpa?

I-It's Ruby.

Okay, please, call me back, I need the name

that's on the back of the comb

you showed me the other day.

- Ruby, hurry!

- Bye!

[tense music]

[door opens]

- You guys got here quick.

- Yeah.

[phone rings]

Mina: Did you take the tunnels?

- Yeah, but we're still late.

- Uh, Granddad, the name.

Liam: (on the phone) Uh, the French woman?

I just dumped that box of rubbish at the junk store.

- You did?

Liam: About an hour ago.

And I won't have a chance to get back over there.

- That's okay,

I have a bit of time after school

before Abelard closes--

- Hey!

Liam: Hello?

- The bell rang ten minutes ago.

You are all in serious trouble.

Phone.

You know the rules.

[dial tone]

All of them.

Hm?

You will get these back after school.

To be specific...

after detention.

You're not to leave school grounds till then.

Let's go!

Mm-hm.

[sighs]

[clock ticking]

[footsteps]

- Sam.

I need to finish that wish by tonight,

but I need that comb back to prove my theory.

What time does Abelard's close?

- Uh, twenty minutes?

Ruby: [sighs]

And detention's over in--

- Thirty minutes.

Ruby: [sighs]

- Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

- Evelyn needed the help of Radcliffe and the magician

to use the tunnels.

Now...

I need you guys to do the same.

Mina, uh,

I need to grab something from my locker.

- Uh, Seb, could you distract your dad?

- Sure.

I'll use a classic misdirect.

Magic 101.

- Um, Mr. Lutes?

(louder) Mr. Lutes?

Um, may I please use the restroom?

- Sure.

Miss O'Reilly?

["Night On Bald Mountain" plays over earbuds]

Straight back here, understood?

Seb: Hey, Dad--

uh, Mr. Lutes.

Uh, question,

the hydrology conundrum we're debating?

What would you say

is the biggest challenge in filtration strategy?

- The answer to that question...

starts with H-2-O.

[tense music]

[grunts]

[distant conversation]

Dee: Did you know that a lot of our stuff

has been appraised by experts?

Woman 5: Okay, alright then, how much for this old thing?

Ruby: [gasps and grunts]

- Please, that's hardly some old thing.

That is a rare, antique comb-style headpiece,

genuine mother-of-pearl, mid-19th century.

The inscription on it makes it one of a kind.

It's a collector's dream.

In fact, I was actually thinking

about keeping it for myself.

Unless you could...

beat $150?

- Wait!

Dee: [yelps]

- Ruby!

Where did you come from?

- Uh...

that comb!

Um, my grandpa donated that box,

but that comb is an O'Reilly family heirloom

that got donated by mistake.

- Really?

- May I please have it back?

- Fine with me, it's not my style.

- No!

Woman 5: I'll let you two hash this out.

Bye now!

- Ruby! I was this close!

You can have it, but...

I can't just give it away.

- Five bucks!

- Sold!

[money bill crinkles]

- (quietly) Denique sine periculo.

Genevieve DuMaurier.

Mr. Lutes: So that, in theory,

creates a system

that is not only environmentally sensitive,

but actually uses the water.

[awkward silence]

How long has Ruby been gone for?

- Not that long.

- A minute.

- Seb.

Are you trying to distract me?

- Are you questioning

my genuine fascination in hydrological minutiae?

- Yeah.

Stay put.

[mild growl]

I'm gonna go look for Ruby.

- You said Ruby was just

getting something from her locker.

If she's not back soon,

my life is going to be a detention!

[footsteps]

[whimsical music]

[footsteps]

[sighs]

?

- Hi!

Mr. Lutes: Oh.

I didn't see you...

it's like you suddenly appeared...

- Like magic?

[piano flourish]

Seb: Thanks, Da-- uh, Mr. Lutes.

I learned so much about capillary action.

- We'll talk at dinner, okay?

To be continued.

[phone rings]

Liam: (on the phone) Hi, honey.

- Uh, Grandad,

I need you to check a name for me,

Genevieve DuMaurier.

[running footsteps]

- Hey, me again, wondering about our project.

You guys do do projects, right?

- Uh, yes, but, uh, Ruby is busy,

which means we do it.

- This is what it's like being responsible.

Can't say I like it.

[door closes]

[footsteps]

- Well?

- Genevieve Elizabeth DuMaurier

came to France in 1858.

Found this at the Pre Lachaise Cemetery

in Paris.

Ruby: Beloved wife of Charles DuMaurier,

mother of Franc, Emile, Jean...

and Viole.

- Yes, and apparently,

she lived a long and happy life

with her family.

- So, Evelyn did escape to safety

and became Genevieve.

Pretty name.

I just love a happy ending.

[sighs]

[footsteps]

Daniel: Detention?

Seriously?

That was your school calling, again.

- It was wrong.

I see that now, it won't happen...

(quietly) again.

- Yeah, promises are one thing,

but this...

is a bigger conversation,

which we'll have after dinner.

[quiet inhale]

[footsteps]

- [sighs]

Ruby: No one said

this well-keeper thing was easy,

but it's not about me.

It's about the wishers calling from the well,

from deep in their hearts

with hopes and regrets and unanswered questions,

people who need help to be whole.

When that happens and the wish is granted,

it's the most beautiful feeling in the world.

Are there sacrifices I have to make?

Yeah. Yeah.

But for now,

I need Viole to know

her loved one was safe, and happy.

Just as Evelyn reached out to Viole across an ocean,

we reach to her across time,

with a bridge of light over the abyss.

[fluttering of feathers]

[dove coos]

[wings flutter]

Bringing peace, friends together,

forever.

[doves coo]

[moving vocal theme]
