Original subtitles

Mina: Is this it, is this it?

Yes, it is!

This is it, this is it.

No way, no way, no way, no way...

no way!

No way!

No way!!

[bike gears whirring]

?

Mina: [squeals]

Daniel: Mina, what's up?

Mina: [excited whinny-like squeals]

This!

It's a...

[high-pitched trilling squeals]

Ruby: Uhh, what is happening?

Mina: [pants excitedly]

Daniel: Uhh, looks like a...

foreign student exchange program

in France!

- With the...

[panting]

- Uh, uh, Eiffel Tower!

Mina: Yes!

And the...

[panting]

- Art!

Mina: And the...

[panting slows]

Both: Mimes.

- Fancy food!

[claps]

[giggles breathlessly]

So, what do you think?!

- This is perfect for you!

I mean, you've been saving to travel forever!

Daniel: It says here the deadline's tomorrow.

- Which is why I cardio'd on over here...

to ask you if it's okay if I...

Ruby: Um, leave me and Sam with the well

and aller off to Paris!

- I won't go if you say you need me.

- Uh, i-it's my name on the well.

I mean not that I won't miss you, but...

you gotta!

[whimsical music]

Uh, and I, I gotta...

[door shuts]

- Is she really okay with this?

- Yeah!

No.

It's hard to tell these days.

It's all well all the time.

But hey, do you want my opinion?

I say go for it.

Assuming your mom is cool with it.

- Next on my list!

Au revoir!

?

[whooshing]

?

[whimsical vocalizing]

?

[intense ringing]

Ruby: [breathes heavily]

[dog barks]

[whoosh]

A dog?

This wish is from a...

dog?

[theme music]

?

?

Sam: Hey!

New wish?

Who's got snacks?

What's with her?

Ruby: Uh, yep, check the backpack

and she is applying for an exchange program.

- What?

Wh-- like away from us?

We're so much fun, though.

You'll never have this much fun

in, uh... where?

- Um, France.

- France?!

Mina: Mm!

- Well, I hope you don't get it.

I mean...

I hope you get it for you

but I hope you don't get it for me.

[keyboard clacks]

[scoffs]

She's just typing.

My whole world is falling apart and she's just typing.

- Uh, she's trying to figure out

how to convince her mom.

Maybe just don't think about it!

Besides we have a brand-new kind of wish: this one...

[unconvincingly] is from a dog!

Sam: Seriously?

Ruby: Yeah!

And since you have your allergy medication

you can help me out this time!

Right?

Sam: Right, so this wish...

from a dog...

is...?

- [clears throat]

Arroo, arroo, arroo...

arroowr.

Rowror.

- Okay.

Whatever that means.

So...

What would a dog wish for?

- Not sure.

But!

I know who we can ask!

Okay, bye Mina,

hope it goes good with your mom!

Mina: [laughs]

Sam: Not me.

?

[door shuts]

Wes: wish for?d a dog

Oh, I don't know.

Dogs are pretty simple,

so, tnumber one.robably

by ear scratches,

toy time,

and three-quarters of the bed.

Ruby: What if the dog sounded tense?

Sam: What makes a dog upset?

Ruby: Yeah.

Wes: Ohh.

Depends on the dog.

It could be lots of things--

garbage trucks, motorcycles.

I know Luna here gets unsettled

whenever I get stressed.

Luna: [whining]

- Really?

Wes: Totally.

She's like a mirror for that.

She can really sense when things aren't good

and then she'll bark and fuss at me about it.

Sam: Well, that's something to go on.

Is that a universal dog thing or just Luna?

Wes: Pff, don't know.

You'd have to ask a professional.

- Then that's what we'll do!

Luna: [barks]

Ruby and Wes: [laugh]

Ava: [overwhelmed] Ohh.

Mina: All I need is your signature

at the bottom.

What do you think?

- I'm just kinda...

taking it in.

- You know how much I've been wanting to travel.

- I do.

- I was thinking about this--

half the stuff in this store has seen more of the world

than I have.

This net?

Korea!

These mittens?

Brazil!

This can?

Indonesia!

I haven't even--

- Set foot out of the country!

- Yes!

- I know, baby girl!

You've been saving up to travel the world for ages.

Mina: Exactly!

So, will you sign it?

- I remember when I was signing

your field trip slips.

Mina: This is exactly like that!

- Mmm.

- Only the field trip lasts the whole semester

and you don't have to pack my lunch,

so that's a bonus.

- You think you're ready?

- YES!

[clothing rack crashes]

- Oh!

Mina: Uh.

- Okay.

Um, I'm gonna sign this

after you de-mitten the floor.

Mina: [excited squeak]

Yes!

Ava: Oh.

Oh, agh.

Ugh.

Mina: [squeals]

Woman 1: [on the phone] It's just that

she constantly needs attention,

and frankly, we just don't have the time.

Aria: [sighs]

O-okay, yeah, um,

let me ask the doc and see if we can find room.

Woman 1: Thank you.

Aria: Mhm!

[irritably] I'll get back to you.

Woman 1: Today?

[receiver clicks]

- [frustrated sigh] How can so many people decide

they want to adopt a puppy and then go, oh, hey!

They require love, attention, and care,

I actually don't want them anymore?!

Oh, you're not here to...

Sam: Oh, n-n-no, we'd never.

No, oh, w-we just had a question.

Aria: Okay, but make it quick.

I am trying to do the whole

multiple-jobs-saving- for-school thing

and I'd love to be out of here

by 9:00 for once.

Hi, Loki.

- Uh, we were just wondering

do dogs know when their owners are...

unhappy?

- Uh, sure!

Dogs can tell when their people are upset.

Or sick even.

They can even sniff out when you have diabetes

or cancer sometimes.

- Cool!

- [chuckles]

[phone rings]

- Uh, so would a dog bark

if their owner was upset or in trouble?

Aria: Maybe.

Mine just kinda puts its paw on my lap

and looks up at me, like, what's wrong, Aria?

Sam: [laughs]

That's hilarious.

- Um, uh, well, perfect!

Thank you!

Aria: No problem.

- So, now we just need to find that in-tune dog,

where do you think we should--

Sam?

Aria: She gives back so much more than she takes.

Sam: Fascinating.

Aria: Here, wanna hold Chloe?

- Oh, sure!

Aria: She's the best, really.

Ruby: Sam?

Sam: Got 'em.

Aria: There you go.

I'll be right back.

Ruby: Earth to Sam?

- Huh?

Oh!

Aria's just, uh, going back

for some literature for me.

I listened to her talk,

somehow I got into the idea of maybe adopting a rescue

or a bird!

- Really?

[dog barking]

[whoosh]

[barking continues]

Sam.

That bark.

[phone rings]

[bird squawks]

Aria: Sam!

Sam: Oh!

Aria: Here you go, Sam.

Sam: [laughs]

Thank you very much!

Aria: Step up!

Ruby: Sorry, miss, uh, excuse me,

that dog that we just heard, where is it?

- You two are looking to adopt?

Ruby: Uh--

Sam: Yes, yeah.

- Uh, wha-- t- haa-- maybe!

- Well, Dr. Halemani's just in there with the rescues

right now if you wanna go on in.

- Thank you.

- Thank you, appreciate the help a lot.

Have a good day!

Thanks!

Aria: See ya!

[phone rings]

[birds cooing]

[dog barks]

Dr. Halemani: It's okay, Bailey, buddy.

I'll be fine.

I'm just having a hard day.

But thanks for caring.

?

[whoosh]

- Sam!

The card from the wish!

A dog who feels for his human,

and a human having a bad day!

- Do we have our wisher?

- Looks like it!

Only problem is...

what's the wish?

?

Ruby: Okay!

Either this wish actually is from a dog

and it's, "Barowrar, rarawr... ra."

Or, the wish is actually from Dr. Halemani.

- You think the well has a sense of humor?

Because I'm starting to.

Mina: Or!

Maybe the well could only share the dog bark

because the doc never actually said the wish

out loud!

Sam: Mina!

You decided to grace us with your presence!

Did your mom say no or something?

- Nope!

She gave me permission!

[laughs]

Sam: [groans]

Which I mean

in the most supportive way possible.

Mina: Thank you!

Now, I have to finish this

not-at-all intimidating application.

- But, I bet she's right.

He never actually said the wish out loud

but Bailey senses that he has one.

- So, what,

do we have to read this guy's mind?

Or the dog's?

- [exhales], well, we've figured out

everything else the well has thrown at us,

we can do this, too!

We just need more on Dr. Halemani.

Sam: So, we do some digging.

Ruby: Exactly!

How's his work life, how's his love life,

how's his home life.

Sam: Work!

Ruby: Home!

Mina: Love!

Because that's what we all really wish for,

right?

- [scoffs quietly]

- It's okay that she wants to leave, right?

- No.

[melancholy music]

[chimes twinkling]

[door opens]

Mina: So much for love!

All this guy does is work.

Seb: You workin' on your exchange student thing?

- Uh, am now!

- Good 'cause I have some not-so-great news:

Sheldon Shackleford's applying.

Mina: No!

Not him!

He'll do anything to win.

- My dad calls him Shameless Sheldon.

Says he's always grade grubbing.

Mina: Well.

Your dad likes alliteration.

- Yeah, well,

I guess he feels free to indulge himself

now that he's dropped out of the corporate race

[sarcastically] and entered academia!

Mina: Joining Emerald Public School as science teacher

is "entering academia"?

- Baby steps.

My point is we haven't had a normal conversation

since he started.

Did you know morning toast can be a teachable moment?

Wheat!

A member of the Poaceae family.

Common name...

grass!

- Mm.

Breakfast grass.

You guys live the dream!

- [chuckles]

[soft music]

- Um, so what do you have so far?

- [sighs]

A lot of backspacing.

- Do you want help?

I've been to France a bunch of times for my dad's work.

- You have?

I didn't know that!

- Yeah, what do you wanna know?

- Tout.

?

Sam: Yep, the guy's a Yelp rockstar.

Puppymom gives him five stars,

says he's, "kind, gentle, and knowledgeable."

Ruby: Wow.

Sam: Yeah, apparently super smart,

tells people he's in his dream job,

and the bonus: he's the only vet for miles.

Mina find anything?

- Uh, just talked to her,

she said his social media is a big ole nothing,

wayyy too busy for love.

Plus his actual status is "married to his job."

- Okay.

What'd you find at his place?

Ruby: Uh, he wasn't there.

But what I saw through the windows,

I mean, there were dishes, clothes all over the floor,

Costco-level ramen stashes.

'Kay either this guy is too busy, too dedicated,

or too something to nest.

- How does it all add up to a wish?

I mean, is he wishing for love?

Or a cook?

Or clean comfortable socks?

- It's all so random.

We need to get the real wish out of him, somehow.

Sam: Yeah, only how do we get face-to-face time

with a busy doggy doctor

to hear him state his heart's desire out loud?

?

- Easy!

I just need to rent a cat.

[book slams shut]

- You wanna borrow...

my beloved Tater Tot-- whatever for?

- Uh, s-- ahh, beh-- because I'm thinking about

getting a pet for myself but, uh,

first I want to try out the pet owning experience,

like taking a pet to the vet!

[inahles sharply]

[clear throat nervously]

- Okay.

[sigh]

You can see for yourself-- Tots needs a checkup,

you can... tag along.

- Perfect!

I love cats!

Kevin: [nerdy, high-pitched scoff]

Yeah, um, Tater Tot's not a cat.

She's an acrantophis dumerili.

- Sorry?

- A Dumeril's boa constrictor.

?

- Nope!

Nope, that's okay!

That's okay, thank you!

Sam: Hang on, hear him out.

Kevin: Ruby, Ruby, wait.

I get it.

Okay, I do.

But maybe now is the perfect opportunity

to change some opinions about our...

lovable friends

in the Serpentes Linnaeus family.

- [nervously] Is it, though?

- I promise you won't have to touch or even see Tots.

Yeah?

And I guarantee it'll be smooth sailing.

?

[cats screeching]

[dogs barking]

Kevin: Sorry, sorry, sorry!

Aria: [gasps]

Oh, don't you watch YouTube?

Cats are terrified of snakes!

Kevin: Well, those videos typically use cucumbers

but...

point taken!

- It doesn't matter!

You don't handle a loose boa

when a cat's out of its carrier

and the door's open!

Kevin: Mmm.

- Uh, so, Tootsie is on the roof.

- Impressive vertical propulsion.

Dr. Halemani: Look, I have a fire

to put out here.

I'll call you back.

I know, I know, I really wish I could help.

?

- Wish.

Uh, Sam?

I-I'm at the vet, I--

Sam: [on the phone] Oh no, I didn't know you were sick!

- Ha ha, very funny.

But, seriously, I... need your help.

Seb: Okay, first, what is with this font?

- What?

It's cheerful.

Like me!

Seb: Sure.

Write letters home from France with that font

but, here...

this is a resume font.

Mina: Hm!

- You want it to look professional.

- How do you know so much about resumes?

- 'Cause I'm the doofus who made one

to work on an ice cream truck.

- You did?

Seb: I was seven.

I made a fancy resume.

Put on my little suit.

And there I was, standing in the passthrough window--

"Hire me!"

Mina: [laughs]

Seb: [laughs softly]

Mina: Okay, but, why?

- My grandpa was all,

"do what you love and work will never be work."

I loved ice cream and I wanted cash of my own,

so...

little Bowtie Banana Split Boy!

Mina: [laughs]

[thoughtful music]

- That's so cute it makes my tummy flip flop.

What?

The feeling you get

when you see a puppy in a teacup?

Okay, do not make fun of me with that face!

- I'm not!

I'm not.

Okay, this much.

[laughs]

Um, okay, um.

Sam: Hey!

I got here as fast as I could!

Where's the fugitive?

Aria: Uh, he...

[dog barks]

- [laughs]

Okay.

Garbage can to tree to ledge...

I got this.

?

Aria: Okay!

Seb: 'Kay, you've got work covered.

Grades?

What's your GPA?

Hm!

I see.

Well, I'll be coming to you for tutoring, then!

Mina: [giggles]

Seb: Uh, what about extracurriculars?

Teams, clubs,

you do anything to help with the community?

- All the time!

Well, me, m--

I, uh, act--

I forgot, um, actually, uh.

No.

Seb: I mean this in the nicest possible way,

but you're a terrible liar.

- Yeah, I know.

- So, what is it?

You seem so busy.

What do you do all day when you're running around

with Sam and Ruby?

- Uh, uh, just fritter away the time.

?

Seb: [clicks tongue]

Well, we'll have to find something

for that section.

Let's move onto the next question.

[door bell jingles]

Aria: [gasps]

[laughs]

[dog barks]

Wow!

Oh, you had quite the adventure, huh?

Yes, you have!

Hey, thanks, Sam!

- Friendly neighborhood cat whisperer

at your service!

Dr. Halemani: Got the...

ladder.

Ruby: Your, um...

Dr. Halemani: Hey, Ruby, Sam, I remember you!

How's, uh, Luna?

And Daisy, the matchmaking puppy!?

Ruby: They're great!

And so are their pet parents.

- Oh, that's great.

You know, uh, to say thank you,

do you guys have time for a treat?

- Sure!

As long as you don't mean the bone-shaped kind!

- N-- [laughs]

No, I'm on my way to a sanctuary.

I mean, the place is a zoo, but,

in a good way!

Wanna join me?

- Definitely!

- Yeah!

- Yeah?

All right.

[candies clatter to the floor]

Ohp!

Ruby: Oh, um.

[whoosh]

?

Dr. Halemani: Thanks.

Candy enthusiast.

Ruby: Ah!

[laughs softly]

?

Singer: ? Turn off the highway ?

? Down the gravel lane ?

Dr. Halemani: Welcome to a minor miracle--

a place of peace for more than just animals!

Ruby: [laughs]

[chickens cluck]

[rooster crows]

[alpaca hums]

Dr. Halemani: A friend of mine, Val,

runs the sanctuary.

She said she's making a home

for all of the unwanted animals

of this world.

- [laughs in amazement]

Dr. Halemani: Discarded ducks, stranded alpacas,

pigs in peril!

And Val--

[grunts]

--you're gonna love her!

She's a hero.

Val: Well, look who's here!

[donkey brays]

Dr. Halemani: Hey, Val, I brought some friends!

?

[chickens crow]

Val: He's one to talk.

He's the hero around here!

[laughs]

Look at him over there with Pele!

Pele usually doesn't like anybody near 'im.

Before he came along

I was running 4-digit vet bills!

Every week!

But when he volunteered to help, oh!

There's no telling how many lives,

how many of these animals he's saved.

There we go.

Ruby: Well, it seems like this is great for him, too!

[horse whinying]

Val: Thank you.

- Look, just an hour ago he said,

"I wish I could help"

and now here he is doing it!

Sam: Yeah.

Easiest wish ever!

Dr. Halemani: [laughs]

[alpaca hums]

Ruby: Yeah!

And he just looks so...

[tense music]

Sam: ...freaked out?

?

Ruby: What are the police doing here?

Sam: Officer Clark?

What does he want with Dr. Halemani?

Dr: Halemani: Here, take it, take it!

Officer Clark: Hey, Doc, hold up a second.

I'm sorry, but, I gotta do this in person.

- What is happening?

Dr. Halemani: Now is not a good time!

I'm not takin' that.

Officer Clark: I'm sorry.

?

- Oh, come on, man.

[sighs]

Val: I'll drive you back later.

Looks like he could use a little alone time.

Time, he never has enough of it.

Hey, do you wanna meet Delores?

She's the duck who thinks she's a chicken!

I swear a rooster has a crush on her

because every time Delores is around

he sucks in his belly!

Bailey: [barking]

- Thanks, buddy.

I appreciate it, I really do.

I just wish...

I wish I could stop this monster.

Bailey: [barks]

Ruby: There it is.

Bailey: [whines]

- [excited gasp]

But...

what's the monster?

Sam: Is he getting arrested?

Officer Clark: Nah, he wasn't getting arrested.

I was just serving him a summons.

Can we wrap this up, guys?

I gotta go.

Sam: A summons?

What is--

Ruby: Uh, it means Halemani's being sued.

- Bullseye.

Sam: Who by?

- Can't say.

I just deliver the paperwork then my job's done.

You can ask him if you like.

Sam: You think he would talk to us about that?

Ruby: Not a chance.

Thanks, Officer Clark.

Which means we need a different way

to figure this out.

Sam: You mean all sneaky like?

- Um...

- You know,

I do need more volunteer hours

for school.

Mina, too.

Ruby: Uh, could work.

Only no snakes, okay?

I've already done that once for the well.

Never again.

Sam: All right.

Are we really doing this?

Ruby: Yeah, we help out at the clinic,

keep our ears open, and then--

Ruby: --wish granted! Sam: Hours logged!

Right, that's...

that's also important.

[puppy yapping]

For the record, it's really hard to look cool

while holding a pooper scooper.

Ruby: Sorry, Sam!

But, we gotta do some digging in here

if we wanna do any digging out there.

- This volunteering better pay off.

- It will!

Okay, we get to help out

and figure out all kinds of things on Dr. Halemani!

Like paperwork with scary red stamps

that say "PAST DUE" or "FINAL NOTICE"

or even "ABSOLUTE FINAL NOTICE--

FOR REAL".

Dr. Halemani: Next!

Ruby: Exotic pets can be a challenge.

Sam: Here.

It means more training,

more specialized care, more time.

Aria: Here you go.

Ruby: Even if they are pretty cute.

[hedgehog chirps]

So, yeah, running a vet clinic is hard!

It's one fuzzy, furry, or feathered crisis

after another.

You need to triage, prioritize,

work really hard, really late,

pretty much every day.

Everything from bloodwork to pushing brooms.

Not to mention

a shocking amount of pet hair.

Awww.

And shocking things in general.

[gasps]

It just does not stop.

Dr. Halemani: Next!

Ruby: And rescue animals.

Way too many rescues with owners who died.

Owners who moved away.

Or owners who just decided

they didn't want them anymore.

?

- Ne--

Ruby: And all the pets who come in

because they're too sick to help

and have to be put down.

- Goblin.

I'm, I'm sorry.

Um.

Right this way.

[melancholy music]

?

Goblin.

Ruby: All that

including the work of running a business.

Aria: Hey, Sam, check this out.

Ruby: Supplies, schedules, employees, taxes--

there's not enough time to get it all done.

Bingo.

Plus, a lawsuit on top of it all?

?

Apparently this lady is suing Dr. Halemani?

Uh, she says he ruined her fancy racehorse!

Mina: Ugh!

He must be so exhausted by all this.

No wonder he sighs so much.

[dog barking]

So what's next?

- We need her side of the story.

- What's her name?

- Says here it's Julia Alexis Sheers

from Sheers Stables.

- I know her!

Her people get tack gear from the store!

She's even in our system!

Ruby: Oh, great!

Let's go!

Mina: 'Kay.

?

Sam: Yeah.

Two scoopers.

Suave.

?

Julia: My advice?

Don't go near 'im.

Ruby: What, why?

Julia: [scoffs]

He's got this great rep,

but it's like he's got two personalities.

He's all Mr. Caring and gentle and kind at first.

And then, bam,

next second he's hostile and judgy.

Ruby: Really?

But his reviews online are so--

Julia: Made up?

You know you can get people to do that for a fee?

- So, what happened exactly?

- You ever hear of a horse called Rodeo Red?

- Uhh...

Julia: Yeah.

Well you would if you knew racing.

Four-year-old chestnut, solid pedigree.

Best trainer in the county, first-class rating,

beautiful animal.

- Sounds like it.

- Mhm.

That's not all.

Gross purse was 400k

and the season wasn't even half over.

- Impressive!

Julia: Mhm!

- Probably?

- So, Red gets a simple bow tendon.

My usual guy's out of town, so I call Dr. Hotshot.

Two days later, after treatment,

my beautiful chestnut can't even race anymore,

nevermind win.

- Eh, a-and you think Dr. Halemani--

- I don't think anything, I know.

That quack pursued a line of treatment

that I expressly did not approve.

- Wow.

- Wow is right.

So, do not take your animal

within two miles of that so-called clinic,

or you're gonna wind up chasing that guy to court

just like me.

[horse whinnies]

?

- [breathes nervously]

?

Ruby: Okay, now that we know the story of the lawsuit

are we convinced that it's the monster?

Mina: Maybe.

But also just in general his job is so hard!

Ruby: Yeah, I mean, the job is pretty tough,

I spent a day there and I already wanted it to stop.

Imagine how he feels.

- No, it's, it's not his job or the lawsuit.

You guys aren't seein' this?

Allow me to demonstrate.

[dresser scraping across floor]

Agh, okay.

[gentle pantomime-y music]

?

Ulgh!

[grunting]

[dramatic music]

Ahh, ahhh!

?

You get it?

Ruby: Um...

Mina: Eh...

Sam: Oh, come on!

Spencer Tracy?

Lana Turner, Ingrid Bergman.

Directed by Victor Fleming himself.

1941!

Mina: Bambi!

- Eh.

- [sighs]

No.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The horse lady said

Halemani has two personalities.

The one that we see-- heroic!

And the one that she saw-- ahhh!

- [scoffs]

Seriously, Sam?

I don't know.

Sam: Well, I--

yeah, obviously that's way out there,

I'm just having fun.

But, all that I'm really trying to say is

what if Dr. Halemani's monster...

- ...is him?

?

Ruby: [grunts]

Okay!

Let's do this.

In the 'not-a-monster' category we have...

Mina: Uh, Val from the sanctuary

who loves him.

Ruby: Mhm, yes.

Mina: Uhh, plus!

How sweet he is with Bailey.

Ruby: Mhm.

- And I saw him high-fiving a ferret.

Ruby: Oh. Sam: [scoffs]

- Uh, the rescues.

- And all the animals he saves every day.

- And pet owners, who he constantly helps.

And, in the 'maybe-monster' category we have...

- The totally credible Miss Julia Alexis Sheers.

Ruby: Mhm.

Sam: Um.

- Aaaand...

that's it.

- No, w-w-w-wait!

The...

horse poisoning!

- The what now?

- The, the candy!

The clue?

And, plus, all the wrappers

that fell out of his pocket!?

- [hesitantly] I'm listening.

- You know how dogs can't eat chocolate, right?

It's like poison.

- [scoffs]

Sam: N-no, listen!

What if it's the same for horses?

Okay?

Wh-what if Dr. Halemani fed the horse candy?

- Sam, why would he do that?

He's a vet!

Sam: There's still a lot we don't know about this guy!

Could be revenge, spite!

Or she used to...

tease him at recess, so...

- [laughs]

Ruby: Okay, great, that's a bit of a stretch.

Sam: [sighs]

But...

we do need more on what happened

with the horse.

Candy poisoning or not, it is important.

[sighs]

Sam: You're welcome!

Ruby: 'Kay, come 'ere.

Let's see.

A bow tendon and some doctor scribbles.

Problem is the notes from the medical examine

are written in veterinarian speak.

This'll take some research.

?

Seriously?

Cutaneous Lymphangitis?

Hyperparathyroidism?

Ohh boy.

[notification chimes]

"Volunteer standing by.

Would you like to speak to a vet?"

Why, yes, I would!

Mina!

I just talked to an actual real-life horse expert.

Okay,

so a horse can fully recover from a bow tendon,

but it takes time!

And following a pretty strict regimen--

6-12 weeks of stall rest, cold hosing,

and a gentle exercise program

which is exactly what Dr. Halemani said to do.

Mina: I feel a big 'but' coming.

Ruby: But!

Mrs. Sheers got too impatient to finish the treatment!

Raced the horse too early.

Mina: Making the injury worse so she sues the doc!

- The guy I talked to said she'll never win,

so that's the good news.

And I asked about the candy-- not poisonous!

Mina: That's a relief!

If candy poisoning were actually a thing,

I'd have to go farther than France

not to hear the end of it.

[phone beeping]

It's Sam, again.

- Uh, he's taking this pretty hard, huh?

Mina: Well, yeah, I mean...

he's my oldest friend, and I'm gonna miss him, too.

- [hopefully] Having second thoughts?

Mina: Nope.

I can't.

My application's in a bunch of teachers' hands now, so...

let's get this wish done before I get the good news.

- O-okay!

Um, so, Dr. Halemani did the right thing

for the horse so we know he's not the monster!

Mina: Yeah, but,

we still don't know what the candy clue means.

- Which means...

I need a fresh perspective.

?

Daniel: Hmm.

?

Looks like you're going in circles.

- 'Kay that I know,

it's the candy part I don't get.

[sigh]

Daniel: So he likes candy.

Ruby: It's more than likes,

his pockets were overflowing with candy wrappers,

I mean his teeth must be...

what?

[chair scrapes floor]

- Well, it wasn't butterscotch candy,

but there was a time

when your mom just inhaled jellybeans.

- Mom?

My mom,

Summer "Savory Snack" O'Reilly?

- Yeah.

For a while there I was at the bulk store every week.

Ruby: [laughs]

When was this, why don't I remember?

- It was right after you were born.

Your mom had major postpartum.

- She had depression?

- Yeah, I think she didn't wanna tell you

until you were older and that you could understand.

Might have been afraid

that you'd think that it was your fault

or that somehow she didn't love being a mom.

- But, PPD, you can't help that, right?

- Right.

I mean, no one was happier to be a mom.

But the chemicals in her brain were messed up

and she was disorganized and sad and...

angry, even.

A whole other person.

- She had personalities.

- No.

One.

A depressed one.

We got through it, but it was hard.

Ruby: [inhales sharply]

Daniel: Cuddling you with your fuzzy little head

sure helped.

Obviously you couldn't understand,

but somehow it felt like you knew

we needed help.

?

- Like Bailey.

Daniel: Hm?

- Dad, that's gotta be it!

I mean the monster, the darkness at the well.

It makes everything make sense!

Daniel: Yeah, yeah, it comes in different forms,

but yeah, depression's a beast.

- So, if that's it, and it's gotta be,

then what do I--

how do I...

Daniel: You're 15, you're not a doctor.

You can't.

- Exactly.

I can't.

?

Paula: A friend with clinical depression?

?

Honey, I, um...

it's not you we're talking about here, is it?

- Uh, no, um, a, a friend.

Uh, an adult and he's a good guy

and, um, I'm worried for 'im.

- Okay.

Okay, well,

I dealt with it more than once

in my nursing days.

And here's what I know:

depression can look different depending on the person.

- Okay.

- Some people clam up, they hide...

like your grandad's brother, Tom.

And other people, they put on a brave face

and then they fall apart in private.

And some live in some pretty impressive clutter.

- So far, so him.

So, uh, how do we fix it?

- You can't.

- You can't, but, there has to be something.

- No, honey.

Depression isn't like sadness or stress.

You have very little control over it.

It's a medical thing, it's a serious thing.

Your friend needs a professional, honey.

Ruby: R-right.

Paula: A-and even then, don't expect a quick fix,

okay, it takes time.

- Wh-- how much time?!

- Lots.

You'll need a doctor to line up a therapist,

and sometimes there are waiting lists,

he... he may need meds,

he might even need to try some different ones.

Sometimes over a few months, sometimes...

yeah, that's it, it's, um, it's time,

it's all about time, really.

- But, but he runs a very busy vet..

clinic and...

with all of these problems how is he suppose to--

Paula: Hey, listen, listen, it's okay,

just put him touch with me

and I can recommend someone, okay?

- It doesn't really fix my time issue but...

thanks, Miss P.

- Sure.

[door bell chimes]

[door shuts]

Seb: Mina?

You okay?

Mina?

- Uh, it's an email

from the International Student Experience

Advisory Committee.

Seb: No way!

Congratulations!

Mina?

- I didn't get it.

See: Oh.

Mina, I'm...

so sorry.

- It's okay, it's no big deal,

I mean...

Fr-France Schmance, right?

Wh-who likes mimes anyway?

- [sighs]

I, I just, I don't--

[door opens]

Mina: [sobs]

Ruby.

I didn't get it.

- Oh, Mina, I'm--

Mina: [sobs]

Ruby: Oh, I'm so sorry.

Oh, that's so not fair, what happened?

Seb: Actually, you know what, I did hear

that Sheldon Shackleford wrote his entire essay

in French and sent it with fresh-baked macarons.

- Of course he did.

- I got Shackleforded!

- You got Shackleforded.

- [through gritted teeth] I got Shackleforded.

- [laughs]

[phone rings]

Um.

The animal clinic, I--

Seb: But...

Ruby: Hi, oh yeah, what's up?

Seb: ...silver lining, we get to hang out more, now.

Aria: [on the phone] He never came in this morning.

Seb: I-- uh, all of us, all of us, so.

Mina: Yeah.

You're right.

Ruby: Thanks for the heads up.

Mina: That is a good thing.

I mean, now we have our volunteer hours

at the vet clinic.

Ruby: Not anymore we don't.

Clinic's closed, Doc didn't show.

- What, why?

Ruby: Uh, Aria didn't know,

but apparently this has been happening

a lot.

Messes up all her appointments,

ruffles a lot of feathers-- literally.

Mina: So, I guess we have a little more time

on our hands now?

- We do.

Don't we?

And I bet we're not the only ones.

Come on.

?

Seb: Bye.

Woman 3: [on the phone] But I've already rescheduled

three times!

- Uh, yes, yes, yes, absolu--

I'm so sorry, but you know what,

we do have a spot available on Thursday!

Would that work?

Woman 3: It's not ideal, but--

[rapid knocking]

Aria: Oh, one sec.

We're closed!

[knocking continues]

I-- just one moment.

I said, we're cl--

Ruby: Aria!

Open up, it's me!

Sam: And me!

Mina: And me!

Val: And me!

- [sighs]

Ruby: Great,

so I can put you down from ten to noon?

Thank you so much.

Val: I know it's a big ask,

but Dr. Halemani needs the help!

12:00-4:00?

You're a lifesaver,

thank you!!

[gasp]

A vet from the city is going to come in

and cover sick visits.

Ruby: Oh, amazing.

And I got eight more general volunteers.

Val: Eight?!

That's such good work, sweetheart!

[door opens]

[dog barking]

[bird chirping]

?

Dr. Halemani: [sheepishly] Hello.

Mina: Hi.

Sam: Hey.

Kevin: Okay, uh, you guys got this?

- What's going on?

- Payback.

Dr. Halemani: [chuckles]

[phone ringing]

[music intensifies]

Ruby: [panicked breathing]

Dr. Halemani: Ruby?

What are you doing?

- Well, on the one hand,

I am pre-weighing an acrantophis dumerili

for its sick visit

[voice shaking] and on the other hand

I... am... facing... my monster.

[dog barking]

[boa hissing]

[gasps]

- Please explain, okay?

- Well, it's just that you do so much

for all of us

and all our furry, feathered,

and horrifyingly not furry, feathered friends--

- It's what I do.

You have to take an oath, too, you know.

- You do?

Dr. Halemani: You bet.

I solemnly swear I'd use my scientific knowledge

and skills for the benefit of society,

for the protection of animal health and welfare.

Etcetera.

Ruby: But, um...

what about your own health and welfare?

?

- I don't always have time for that.

Some things just get lost in the shuffle.

?

- Well, not anymore.

Because now we're here to return the favor

so that you can finally have some time

for yourself.

- Um.

But how?

Why?

- It's just what we do.

?

- Any chance I could convince you

to maybe talk to my dad?

As a first step.

Daniel: Hey.

- Uh.

What is he a lawyer or a doctor?

- No.

He just has a really good ear.

And a really good heart.

He's also, um, not bad at slaying monsters.

- [exhales deeply]

Ruby: [sighs]

Daniel: It was hard.

But she did come back to us.

We were lucky we had the support and understanding

of the people who loved us, and...

I think that really made a big difference for us.

Ruby: By talking with my dad,

Dr. Halemani seemed to let go a bit.

He knew he was in trouble.

But taking care of yourself takes time.

Time he didn't have.

The well knew a bunch of kids couldn't fix depression.

But we can grant Dr. Halemani's wish...

by giving him the gift of time.

Time to talk to the professionals

Paula knew.

Time to heal.

Time to reflect on how all is never lost.

That life offers one opportunity

after another.

Whether it's the doc getting this monster off his back.

Sam: Check this out!

Or suddenly enthusiastic volunteer Sam,

following a new interest in veterinary medicine.

Or Mina,

figuring out a whole other way to travel.

- I am so adding the Forbidden City

to my bucket list!

?

Bailey: [barks]

Ruby: But if there's one soul

who's even happier than the rest of us

about Dr. Halemani's road to recovery,

it's a very good boy named Bailey.
