The following program contains strong language and adult humor.
Rom and I are back.
Ready to throw ourselves into the most weird, bad guy, and
wonderful world.
Together.
We're going on a journey of discovery.
Is that your card? Yeah. Right there, the three of clubs.
To find out what we like. It's Angie.
Angie!
And what we don't. Oh, Jesus.
Don't look down.
Can I have a food bag, please?
Oh, God.
This week... Those will be your magic wines.
We're on a mission to become magicians. You know that you can see the top of
your cubic bush, don't you?
We head to Las Vegas to meet two of the world's greatest.
Good evening!
We are Penn & Teller!
Try our hand at street magic on the Vegas Strip. What's the film? Star Wars.
Thank you. Thanks, guys.
And perform the encore at Penn & Teller's show. Here is Rob and Ramesh
Liftoff to Love!
My name is easy. Yeah, this is true.
Keeping your attention is what I'm going to do.
Hardcore. You all can never be soft.
Acting like my deaf and they say the boy goes off.
Here we are, Vegas. Are you excited?
I think this car's a bad idea.
The thing is, in the UK, you can't drive around in a fancy car if everyone
thinks you're a knob. Here, look at those legends.
America appreciates success.
Cutler Supreme 703.
Look how cool those guys are.
Cheers, mate.
Cutlass Supreme, 73.
Stuff like that. He didn't ask.
Well, I told him.
We were en route to the Rio Hotel to meet the legendary Penn & Teller. But
first, I wanted to give Rom a little tour of Vegas.
Welcome to Vegas, the side.
You seen the other side?
Yeah, I can see it. Do you want to pull over and take a photo?
No. I'll find someone to park. Sure. No, no, no. Don't you want to get out?
They're queuing up. They're queuing up!
Cutlass, 73.
What are we getting in this trip, Rob? Would you have a stag do it, Vegas?
I've been on one in Vegas. How was it? When you ever go to Vegas on a stag,
there's one bloke that after the trip goes completely silent, and he's on the
phone to his wife quite a lot.
Part of the trip was the strip club. We all went in.
Rob's enforced tour was over, and now we could concentrate on the task at hand,
becoming magicians.
Penn and Teller are heavyweights in the world of magic.
Their unique mix of comedy and jaw -dropping illusion has been stunning
audiences for over 45 years.
I think you can do a little better, Teller, all the way.
Woo!
Woman sawn into halves right there. That's Georgie right there.
How many of you, during all of that, saw sneak the gorilla into the cage?
How many of you saw that? Because that's...
Pen does the talking, and Teller prefers to let the magic speak for itself.
Or, to put it another way, he doesn't say a word. We were meeting them at the
Rio Hotel, where they've been headliners for over two decades.
And the 300 -foot billboard outside was just another reminder of how famous they
are. It's quite overwhelming, actually, because they're megastars.
They've been here for 20 years. They've been in The Simpsons. They've been in
Friends. Anything you can do in show business, they've done.
And now we're here to ruin it. Thank you so much for even agreeing to meet us,
man. This is amazing. We're so excited. Yeah, we're so excited to meet you.
Thanks for coming out. How did you first sort of fall in love with magic? Or are
you in love with it? Well, I tell her.
He got a Howdy Doody Magic set when he was very young, four or five years old.
He had a Magic set, yeah.
And fell in love with it. I actually really disliked Magic, intently.
And it wasn't until I met Teller, and Teller said that Magic could be more
a greasy guy in a tux with a lot of birds to add rip -offs, small dick,
boy, Motown music.
When I thought it could be more than that. Yeah. When I thought it could be
essentially intellectual. You loved magic growing up, and I think I'm a bit
like you. That sort of illusionist stuff of all the sequins and the... It does
my head in. Oh, yeah, it's horrible.
So you very kindly let us...
Do your encore.
Yeah, the Friday night show.
We finish our show and we say to people, now we've got these guys coming out.
They've got one of the hardest tricks we've ever done. Pardon? That we no
do. What are we doing? And they're going to come out and do that trick. So
please welcome Robin Ramesh with Lift Off to Love. So you're saying that just
build it up, right? The hardest.
How hard is the trick?
It's a hard trick. We'll start teaching you some sleight of hand and then we'll
work up to a big illusion, the encore of our show.
Let's go. Let's go. I'm excited.
We were already in too deep, but Penn and Teller were going to break this in
gently with one of the most famous magic tricks of all, the cups and balls.
Here's the way it's done. We take the ball, we place it in our hand, we vanish
it, and it appears underneath the cup. That's the way it's done all over the
world. We take the ball, we place it in our hand, we vanish it, and it appears
underneath the cup. Here's a little variation Teller came up with. He takes
ball, shows it underneath the cup, and it still appears.
Underneath the cup.
Now, for the second half, we take that center ball, place it in the center cup.
Take the two side balls, put them anywhere we want, and they still regroup
the center cup.
There's three balls right over here. Do a little bit of juggling, and then a
giant ball appears in the center cup.
One more on either side. And, of course, for the finish, it's an American
baseball.
Unbelievable. It's amazing to watch, but it's a double -edged sword because
you're watching it go, and these tricks look really impossible, and then you
also know that you're going to have to do one of their tricks as part of their
encore. So the more impressive they are, the more shit fills my pants.
Well, we're going to teach you the move that is used, probably kind of the only
magic trick in this, the French drop. Cool.
Our first lesson was a sleight of hand illusion that required precision to get
right. So Rob was already in trouble.
Take it and hold it in your hand like this.
Okay? And then just place it in the other hand.
That's all you're going to do. Don't do anything sneaky.
Just place it in the other hand. I think that's sneaky.
Pretty sneaky.
Yeah, you're pulling your hand away like you're scared. Don't be scared of this.
Okay. Put it in your hand. The idea is, it's supposed to look like you're
passing the foil ball to the other hand, but you keep it in that hand. You're
holding it here.
Yep. And you're going to put it there.
Yeah, you're still going.
Oh, okay. What Rob was doing was keeping the ball in one hand and then looking
surprised that he'd done it.
Right.
It was one step below going, sit in that hand.
It was unbelievable.
He couldn't have telegraphed it more.
Watch the ball. Okay, I'll watch the ball.
You look right up at it. You don't have to look up.
Watch the ball the whole time. Sorry, okay. It was crazy.
He would go like that and go...
Now, you're going to put the thumb under it, and if it comes under, you're going
to drop it. You've got to close your fingers.
Otherwise, they'll see that it's not there.
Pay attention.
I think it's a bit unfair that Gromash has been taught by someone that spoke.
That was much better.
That was much better, okay. Whereas I was being taught by someone just through
facial moves.
Yeah.
You want to watch the ball.
I'm not, you know, I'm not in education, but I think sometimes you do need to
have to speak to your students.
Otherwise, it's hard, isn't it?
Imagine that, if you're doing any, like, imagine maths.
I'm trying to watch the proper, I'm also trying to watch you, but you don't
speak.
It's really hard when people are watching, isn't it?
Yeah. That's why a lot of people do magic in the dark with no audience.
Here we go.
He's really good at magic on his own in a room.
Was that good? No.
Rob's lack of ability was clearly worrying, Penn.
So he hit the panic button.
For some of this, let's let Teller talk. He's a better teacher than I am. And
then we'll just edit that out, okay?
That's how badly it went.
Somebody who has never spoken on camera broke his vow of silence because he was
dealing with such an idiot.
Oh, yeah.
No, you're supposed to keep it in that hand and not look shocked.
Teller had to say those words to him.
Teller. Silent Teller had to say that. And after some pretty intensive
we were about to find out if Teller's sacrifice had been worth it.
The French drop seemed like a lost cause.
But Penn had come prepared with a card trick perfect for beginners.
What I want you to do is just name a number between 1 and 10.
7. 7.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Look at that card, remember it,
okay? And then put it back on the deck.
We're going to turn our back and look at it.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Look at that seventh card. Yeah.
Memorize it. Yeah. Put it back together. Put the deck back together. And now
Teller will find that card sympathetically.
And is that your card? Yes. The three of clubs.
Right there, the three of clubs.
Amazing. I'm going to teach you how to do that. Okay. That's called a card
force. Right. Once you force the card, any punchline you want. You could have
the three of clubs tattooed in your arm.
You could have the three of clubs stuck in your pants.
Penn guided me through the trick. Find the three of clubs. Okay. And all you've
got to do is put it on top of the deck. And when he broke it down... Have me
pick a number.
Pick a number between one and ten.
It actually seemed pretty simple.
I think Romesh is doing quite well, but there's nothing worse when you're
learning something in front of someone who's getting it quicker than you. I was
so panicked, because he got it so quickly, and I was still just going,
we doing?
So now, Rob, you know how to do the force.
Do it for Teller.
Yeah, no, I actually, can I say something? I understand what's going on
but I didn't crock how you did it. How do you do that again?
Tell her, name a number.
Name a number.
That's it, okay?
What are you going to do?
What's that?
One of the problems that Rob Beckett has, one of the numerous problems that
Beckett has, is he has the attention span of an ADHD goldfish.
Show them what you do.
Count down six. Okay, one, two, three, four.
Five. Six. Tell them to look at that card.
Tell them to look at that card. I don't know what's going on. Why am I so shit
at this? We were sat with two of the greatest magicians of a generation.
And Rob was unable to follow a simple sequence of instructions.
Yeah, and then look at this card.
And tell me what it is, okay? No, don't tell him what it is. Keep it to
yourself. Keep it to yourself. If he looks at the card and tells you what it
there's no trick.
Come down here and tell me. It's the nine of hearts, Rob.
It was hard to imagine how our lesson could have gone worse for Rob.
He'd been walked through two tricks and failed them both spectacularly.
And the icing on the cake, he forced Silent Teller to break his silence for
absolutely nothing.
What I've learned is, I'm not... Going to be able to do magic.
Thank you so much. Thanks so much.
Friday night, you're the encore. Hey, I can hit drama.
I'm Debbie McGee.
Any last tips to sort of, um, to help us on our way? Uh, practice.
Sure.
Thank you. Okay. All right, cheers.
We're fucked.
They'll be okay, don't you think?
They'll be okay.
Yeah, maybe.
in Las Vegas trying to become magicians.
We met the incredible Penn and Teller, who have attempted to teach us some
tricks.
Unfortunately,
Rob had been so bad that they were sending us to magic school.
And if we needed more proof that his Cutler Supreme was a mistake, we were
to have to cross Las Vegas in rush hour traffic with no air conditioning.
We're doing magic.
Yes. Oh, my God.
Out of the lorry.
All the cars are so loud.
I can't see behind me.
We can't do chat. This is the first one where we're not able to do chat in the
car.
Fortunately, we were heading to the quiet Las Vegas suburbs.
And once we were out at the Cutlass, we could actually have a conversation
again.
How into magic would you describe yourself as being currently at this
Probably as far away from liking it as I've ever been. Okay.
Is that further away than when you started?
Yeah, because actually, before it was an unknown quantity, but now it's known.
I feel like I connected with Penn, because he said he didn't like all the
illusionist stuff. Yeah, but then he devoted his life to it, so...
I'm not willing to do that. No. I don't even want to devote my life to comedy.
No. I'm quite into... If I had to devote my life to something, it would be
holidays. Yeah.
Penn and Teller. Yeah.
I've organised.
I'm not saying this shows a lack of faith.
Okay. But I've organised for us to go to a magic school.
So listen, this is what's going to happen. Yeah.
We're going to go in there. Yeah. You're going to learn some magic.
You're going to come out. You're going to be like the great Beckett Deany or
whatever. I'm going to fall in love with it. It's going to be a conversion.
We were meeting Penn & Teller's old friend, Jeff McBride, at his home -cum
school. And by the look of it, we were in for an interesting day.
Oh, no, he's doing something at the door.
Do I knock?
Yeah, knock.
I don't want to knock on the phone. Yeah, just... Hello.
Welcome to the magic and mystery school.
Jeff has been teaching the art of magic for over 30 years.
So if he can wake up Rob's inner magician...
We might as well book the next flight home. Amazing.
And this is our patron god. This is Mercury, the god of magic. And you're
to be initiated into the world of magic. Take your seats, gentlemen.
It was a strange start.
Jeff's house was like a magical museum.
And we're about to be given the full Harry Potter treatment.
Those will be your magic wands. And with a wave of that magic wand, we are going
to go on a magical mystery tour where you will learn the secret to the word
abracadabra, which is not a nonsense word. Are you ready to go on your
initiation? Yeah. All right, let's go.
Just a bit, uh, a bit, um, kooky.
And I always think it's weird when you just call your house a school.
So I've been homeschooled by a six -year -old magician.
This is the word.
Abracadabra, which is an actual magical formula. Okay. Go ahead.
Abracadabra. Translated.
Go on, go on.
Translated as I create.
And abracadabra actually means I create as I speak. So the magic wand helps you
focus your energy. So step right up here and put the magic wand about six inches
away, both of you, and say abracadabra.
Abracadabra. Oh, I don't like that.
It's like Indiana Jones.
Wow. And welcome to the magic and mystery school. That's great. That's
vulnerable.
We'd made it to Jeff's inner sanctum, but his tour had only really just begun.
Who is the person that loves movie memorabilia the most?
We've never had that conversation.
I don't know. I've got a few bits of movie memorabilia.
You'll like this. This is one of my most precious here.
Yeah. This is Ride of Chucky. This one particularly is signed by the artist,
that's why we keep it in the safe. You can see it's signed by the artist.
It's horrible. She gets a little feisty with strangers.
Oh, Jeff.
Ready to settle down to the mansion? I feel like I'm the stag.
I was relieved Jeff's kooky tour was finished.
And now we were going to settle down and actually learn some magic.
Cards originated in China because that's where they invented paper. And they
were taken all over Northern Europe in the 1400s. And the cards were used for
fortune telling, but they were also used for gambling. And then magicians came
up with exquisite mysteries to be able to perform with the playing cards. And
today we'll be starting more.
Come on. Yes.
Your initiation.
Where are they coming from? And I'm going to just roll up the sleeve here a
little bit and produce a couple of more here and a couple of more here.
Oh, my God. And by the time you leave here, my friends, you will be masters of
the esoteric art and be able to do magic just
like that. No wonder you're giving away stuff. You produce it. That's right.
Rob, I'm going to teach you how to read Romesh's mind, but you have to stay
here. You're going to do some studying.
Oh, okay.
You're going to do some studying. I have a book for you to read. So I'm going to
learn to read your mind? It's just like a party.
Okay, I want you to read this cover to cover while I'm in the other room
teaching Rob how to read your mind. Let's get to work.
Have fun.
I didn't feel great about Rob being given access to my mind, and I felt even
worse. About it all going on in secret.
We've only just met, Jack. That's all I know.
Rob's tied up with a ball gag in his mouth right now.
So, in which case, this has been a successful day.
I'll probably read this book for a little bit and then leave.
Give it a couple of hours, hit the strip, and then think about calling the
police.
Next door, I was showing some natural talent at mind reading, a .k .a.
mentalism. And with Jeff's guidance... Step back. You really, really sent it to
me. It didn't take long before I was ready to hit wrong with it. Okay.
I'm going to read your mind, okay? Okay. So I'm going to show you this, right?
In it, loads of films.
Godfather, Forrest Gump, Stephen Robb, Ryan Jaws, loads of Toy Story, Fight
Club, Backstreet Diaries, loads of films. You've seen, you like films,
seen films.
Yeah. Okay, right.
Now, put your left hand out.
Right hand on top. Now, I want you to riffle through the pad, okay, with your
thumb. About halfway through, look down.
Quick look.
You got that? You got the film? Yeah. That's it.
Right, take that.
Okay. Think of the film.
Just in your head, okay?
Okay.
Is that coming through?
Oh, my God.
This is mad.
Hang on, hang on, hang on.
Play the music in your head.
Okay. Yeah.
What film?
Well, you've done a lightsaber and you've done a picture of Yoda.
So what film is it?
Star Wars. Thank you.
How?
Yeah.
How the hell did you do that? It's inside me and Geoff just released it.
Yes.
You can't learn that. I'm a mentalist.
I've got hidden powers.
Because Geoff pulled me and was like, look, I think we can do this. Only a
certain number of people can.
And I've done it and it's blown Romesh's mind.
Do you know, genuinely, he pulled me around the corner and went, he could
it, and I've got it. He's got it. I'm a mentor. He pulled you around the corner
and said he could feel it, and you've got it. Yeah, he's got it.
It's weird, because you know what the cards are? That's like practice. You
haven't got this, so you ain't.
I've unlocked a part of my brain I didn't know I had.
And I don't know where it's leading me.
How did you do that? I didn't know I could do it, but I can. How did he do
Not everyone can do it. I can.
He can. He has a gift for it. That's why he pulled me to one side. You can't.
Well, I need to get representation.
I need to look at new management.
You know, my agent's great, but he's a comedy guy.
I'd like to chat with Darren, see who he's using, give Blaney a bell, and just
work out what my new route is into this world of magic.
But the great thing is now, whenever I do have a meeting with an agent, I know
what they're thinking.
And it's great for negotiations.
They're like, we want to have, what, 15 %?
12 and a half. Nice try.
I haven't said anything. You were thinking it.
I needed something special to trump Rob.
But by the time it came to my magical demo...
i wasn't feeling confident like that's your hand this is the world's
smallest deck of cards here he's going to take that take that put it in your
mouth look at his mouth oh
wow yeah huh yeah yeah good right he's getting ahead of you
with the cards a little bit yeah he's got this point of hand thing going yeah
little bit yeah yeah maybe a couple more lessons yeah I wasn't convinced extra
lessons of my card bomb trick would help, but Jeff seemed confident that we
learned enough.
Right on, Jed. Just set the door on the way out. The important thing to know is
that a magician isn't made in a day. It really takes a lifetime.
However, you guys are way ahead of the game because you're kind of a comedy
and you have that improv timing and that repartee.
Again, there are no graduates from the school, but you have the tools.
You got the sleight of hand.
You're mental.
And you're going to have to go practice what you've learned. Thank you. We'll do
you proud. All right.
Cheers, mate.
Take care. Thank you. Bye -bye.
Another success story.
It's hot, isn't it?
Our
magical
journey was well on its way.
Abracadabra! We've learned some tricks at Jeff McBride's magic school. This is
mad. Yeah.
And now Penn and Teller wanted us to test out what we'd learned. So this
evening, they'd arranged for us to hit the Vegas Strip to perform street magic.
Big -time magicians like Dynamo famously leave street crowds stunned.
And now it was our turn.
Um...
Have we made a mistake with these?
Um... The outfits, I mean.
Yeah, I'm not sure.
We look like we're in the over 30s of X Factor.
Matt Cardle and Andy Abraham.
We just thought we'd put on one more tour to give it another go. We feel like
people like us.
Is this what magicians wear?
Huh?
I don't know.
OK, all right, well, look, I'll tell you what.
You pitch up over there, I'll pitch up over there.
Hopefully we don't get the shit kicked out of us. All right, see you in a bit,
mate. See you in a bit.
Ron wasn't sounding too confident, but my mentalism was on point, even if my
outfit wasn't.
Jeff's unlocked me.
He's the scout leader, and he's put his badges on me.
I've got all the tricks in the book right now. I can read minds.
Don't let me go to work. But unfortunately, every mind I read is Star
Unless someone else gets me another notebook.
We decided we'd take on Las Vegas after dark, because the drunker people were,
the less likely they'd notice we were just two -bit magicians.
Star Wars.
So, mentalism wasn't bulletproof, but I weren't going to let that stop me from
blowing some American minds.
What's up? What's your name?
G. G? Love it. We on TV.
Big time.
Anything you want to say to anyone while you're on telly? Oh, yeah, we're going
on, my dudes.
I love you.
Shout out to the gang. Free the homies. Free the gang.
Perfect. Okay.
Right. Now, tell her.
Loads of films written in this book. Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws,
Toy Story, Fight Club.
Now, put your left hand out, put your right hand on top.
Now look at me.
Thumb through the pages, but look at me, because you've got to read your mind,
okay? Thumb through the pages and have a quick look at a film.
Back at me.
Got a film?
Yeah. Yeah? Yeah.
Just stick with that film, okay? Just look at me like, I know you're smart, I
know you're enjoying it, but you've got to concentrate.
It's ain't easy.
Tell me the film.
Star Wars.
Star Wars!
What are you saying, Jake?
My name's Rob Beckett. Big me up.
Yeah?
Come on!
No, not again. Not again.
We're going to have to wait for the crowds to tie down before they start
again. Further down the strip, I'd found a busy place to pitch up.
And before my nurse took over, I got stuck in. Hey, guys, can I show you a
really quick magic trick?
No? Okay.
Have a great night.
Guys, can I show you a really quick magic trick?
No, it's okay, mate. It's totally free?
It's free, mate.
Okay, no worries.
Hey, man, can I show you a really quick magic trick?
No?
Guys, do you want to see a magic trick?
I don't think.
Are you sure? It's really good. It's like really good.
Oh, that's okay.
Okay. Giving people the option to see a trick wasn't working, so I had to take
my magic to them.
Hey, man.
This is actually starting to become quite embarrassing.
Hey guys!
But my Gonzo card bomb wasn't going down well.
Fuck. Hey guys!
Just vomited those.
When you sort of work on your magic and you think, what do you want?
You want someone to be able to look at you...
Like you've got a problem and then just walk away with no reaction at all.
That's the ideal.
Up on Mentalist Corner, I was loving life.
Think of the film.
Okay. Just think of it. I'm thinking.
Yeah. You got it? Yeah.
Right, tell me the film.
Star Wars.
Star Wars.
Yeah. Yeah? You happy with that? Got it. Who's your favourite magician?
My favourite magician? Rob Beckett. Is that Rob Beckett?
No, Rob Beckett. Rob Beckett. No, Rob Beckett. Rob Beckett. Thank you.
No, you were our beggar. Yeah, that's me.
Nice to meet you. No worries.
Down by the fountain of failure, people were starting to take pity on me.
I want to do a magic trick on us. No, I want to do a magic trick on you. Have a
look at this.
Oh,
shit. Sorry, I fucked it. Hold on.
Have a look at this.
What the fuck? I'm sorry.
Have a... Have a look at this.
See?
Huh?
Cool. Cool. Thank you. Cheers.
Take care. Bye -bye.
My arsehole is completely closed.
Word must have been spreading on the strip because people couldn't get enough
my mentalism.
Look at me. Stop laughing.
Sell me the pill.
Don't worry.
So what?
Thank you. The one person.
I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it. Yeah. I'm going to do it. Yeah.
This is all for now.
All right. My turn. My turn. Okay. Let's do it. Okay.
Okay. Let's go.
Got a bit of a crowd.
I was in big trouble now. I'm going to read your mind. What's your name?
Angela.
Angela. Okay, Angela.
Left hand out so you don't have to flap.
Right. You can see that. Loads of films.
So, you know, loads of films, okay?
Better flap.
Right hand on top, okay?
Use your thumb, go through the page inside. Stop in the middle. Stop and
look. Okay.
Okay,
stop. Just look.
Go on.
Go on. You got a film?
Yeah. Okay, you got a film. Let me take that. Put it away.
Okay. Look at me. Are you ready to read to mine?
You're a fake.
Here we go.
That's all I got to say.
What? You're a fake.
Okay, wait a second. You'll find out.
All right.
Okay, you ready this time?
What are you thinking?
Star Wars. Thank you, so on.
The Godfather is what I was really thinking.
Star Wars is like half the deck.
Yeah, that's it.
Good stuff. Right, we need to leave. We need to leave.
I've been busted, and even though I'd had fun, the crowd turned.
So it's time for me to call it a night.
I was still desperate to try and get a trick away, and I had one left to try.
The pen and teller card for.
Would you like to do a magic trick?
All right.
Yeah? Yeah. Okay, great. All I had to do now was not mess it up. Can you give me
a number between one and ten, please?
Seven. Seven, great. So I'm going to show you exactly what I want you to do,
okay? So you get your hand out there, and what I want you to do is I want you
count to seven, okay? So one, two, three, four, five, six, and then
seven. You're going to look at the card, and then you're going to remember it,
all right? Of course.
Okay, there you go. Count to seven.
One, two, three, four, five, six. Stop. Look at your card.
Don't show me. I'm not looking.
Put the card down.
Okay. You remember the card.
Don't tell me, though.
Yes. You remember, yeah? Yes.
It's a black card, isn't it?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
It's a low number.
Oh, fuck. That's an excuse, yes?
Do you know what? I can... It's scratching my head here to... I think
Oh, that looks good.
Huh? Yeah. Fuck yeah.
Yes, brother.
Yeah, you like that? I'm a magician, mate. I'm a magician.
Enjoy that, yeah? Cool, nice one. Take care.
Absolutely snatched it.
I've nailed my first trick and it felt amazing.
The card force was definitely the way forward. I think I know what your card
Tell me if it's this.
Take a look at that.
Is that your card? Yes!
Come on!
Huh? Close out to the camera, yes.
Which rang an A for magician.
Yes. Yes.
Smashed it, yeah. Thank you so much.
I was genuinely starting to feel like Penn and Teller. Is that your card?
Yes!
Huh?
Thank you. Thanks, guys.
I'm a magician.
Huh?
Congratulations. You just did magic.
Take care. You too.
Woo! Check. One, two, one, two.
Gather round. We're about ready to do a magic show over here.
Oh, for fuck's sake. Right here, folks.
That's right.
We're going to start things off with just a few little warm -up tricks here.
I'm an absolute nightmare.
Trying to do a magic show on the strip and an actual magician has turned up.
Everyone's safe, I promise.
Come on in.
There was no way I could compete with this guy's PA system banging out
Eurotrans. Nice to meet you.
And within a couple of minutes, he'd drawn a decent crowd.
Absolute prick. If I wasn't on TV now, I'd be like, I'd swear up to him.
And say, it's clearly my patch, you wanker.
I'd seen enough.
It was time to find Rob and see how he got on with that drink magic, Pep.
Go on then, tell me.
I need more notebook.
What happened?
I can only guess the film Star Wars.
Boom!
It was going well.
The first time I did the Star Wars, people, the crowd was like, what?
And what about the fifth time you did Star Wars for the same group?
Yeah, they didn't go well.
However... What?
Big time.
Earned a couple of dollars.
I've got an idea.
Yep.
We buy Caesar's Palace.
Let's take our earnings.
Double it. Turn them into winning. Big time. Let's go.
Or not.
Have you actually, like, done a casino?
No, I'm not really a gambler.
Like, it looks fun, but I don't understand any of the games.
It's a bit embarrassing walking through looking like this. I just think find
something easy.
What's easy?
Um... Like, that looks fun, but I don't understand it. Let's just do roulette.
Here we go. There's a space at a roulette table.
Hi. Hello.
Have we got to play roulette?
Come on, do it.
Okay. So we just put it on one we want?
Do it on red.
Do you reckon red?
I recommend.
Yeah, but you work for the casino.
Shall we go red? I'll still red. I'll still red. Okay, all on red. Really?
we're going to go all on red.
All in. All on red, please.
One spin of the roulette wheel stood between us and the beginning of a night
Las Vegas we'd never forget.
Black guy.
Black guy.
Did we lose?
Yeah. You lost. You lost, okay.
The opposite colour.
The wrong one, all right. The wrong one.
Cool. Okay, well, see you later, guys.
Well, thanks a lot.
Thanks, guys. See you next time.
Okay. What do we do now?
I don't know. We've got no money left.
Is that gambling?
Yeah.
It's hard, isn't it?
Really hard.
It's not as much fun as it looks.
What an absolute tragic end to the day.
We spent the past week in Vegas trying to become magicians. We'd scrape through
our street magic test. And now we graduated
to take on the encore of Penn and Teller at Friday night show.
One of the hardest tricks we've ever done that we no longer do. It's not an
trick.
It was the day of our performance and we were starting early.
to give us a hope of being ready for tonight's show. Hi, Nate. We were
Nathan Santucci, one of Penn & Teller's trusted magical advisors.
Let's learn a magic trick. Yeah.
Nate had the next eight hours to work a miracle on us. If you're not
claustrophobic, if you're not allergic to silicone bits, lubricants, you'll
do fine. How are you, really?
I'm all right. I've never used leave in small spaces.
No, where do you use it?
All over the room.
Claustrophobia and lube didn't sound very magical, but when we saw what the
trick was, it started to make sense.
Liftoff to love is a complex and physically demanding body separation
We need to work as a team, and most importantly, keep time with the music so
that we hit our cues.
I drew the short straw, so I'd be playing teller.
And that involved sliding around in a concealed lubricated box.
Oh, wow, this is slippy. You look
funny there, Rob.
Look at that.
You look like you're trying to escape from prison.
This is how my dad did it.
Oh, shit.
What happened? I smashed my nail on the handle.
Romesh has got the harder job. He's slipping around in there like a snake
in the cellar.
And I'm banging boxes on his head.
Kick the lid in.
I'm sorry, it's not yet. Fuck's sake.
Yeah, sorry, that is open now.
Jesus. Everybody's worst nightmare is to be trapped in a dark box.
And that is what I have to do for this trick.
Hello? You still talking?
No.
I wasn't enjoying being a human mole.
And to make things worse, Penn decided to come out to see how we were getting
on. Look at him go. You're learning this.
Thanks for the pep talk, Ben.
But it was clear we weren't learning fast enough.
Come on, let's reset and do it again.
With only a few hours before curtain up, we were running out of time to get our
act together.
Hold on. Rob, have I gone too fast? You've gone way too far.
Nothing about it is going right.
It's horrendous. And also, it's really frightening in that box.
No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't match the speed of Ped and Teller's
performance. The main problem is it takes Romesh ages to tumble along.
Oh, bollocks.
Was it legs next?
No arm, innit?
We're not going to be able to do it. I hate the training.
And as of right now, I hate Rob.
I can't see how this works. I'm not doing it in like a fake set of the
Cannot. We cannot do this trick.
The marathon training session was finally over, but there was still one
part of the show that we neglected.
To be true Vegas magicians, we had to look the part.
So Penn & Teller's costume department had arranged some magical looks for us
try out.
Find a few outfits, see which works best.
You want to look good for the big show?
I'm ready for you.
Has this one got a name?
Well, it's a lot.
Criss Angel. Oh, no.
I can't. I don't think I can look at you.
That's horrible. That is so... You don't look real.
You look like a baddie from Despicable Me.
I just can't work out what I'm looking at. Like, why are you getting an
erection? By the way, your arms look great.
You go and get... I'm going to wipe you out. You keep that on.
OK. Ron?
Yeah? How are you feeling?
Yeah, I feel all right. I've got a couple of outfits in here. Okay.
The first one, I'm going to try and sort of, cos we're a double act, try and
match with you.
You ready?
Yeah.
You know you can see the top of the cubic bush, don't you?
Like that?
Yeah.
It's so low, that. Sorry.
Shall I try to jack it off?
I just... Are you... Let's open it up.
That's a bicycle.
Do you care where your trousers are on your body at all?
Because you've got about three solid inches of arse crack in that mirror.
Is that alright? That's better, yeah.
Do we look like a double act?
We look like a pair of novelty salt and pepper shakers.
Shall I put it on the maybe pile? I can actually smell you. Go and get changed.
Okay.
The maybe pile.
I feel sick.
It's the kind of magic.
It's the kind of magic.
It was nearly showtime.
The kind of magic.
Good evening!
I've mined here tonight.
Figured there are 1 ,912 jelly beans in there.
That's your card, Beth. Take a look at it. Remember it? Is that your card?
God damn it. Just drop it.
Jesus Christ. Okay.
We looked something like magicians, but we didn't feel like magicians.
Penn and Teller were wrapping up their incredible show, and we were not looking
forward to our special encore performance.
We try to represent this as a two -person show.
I think we made a good choice for the outfit.
I think not too much.
I think it looks powerful.
I feel like I'm a baddie in Star Wars. I'm about to unleash hell.
If we came out as baddies in Star Wars like this, it's the end of the
My name is Benjamin Porter Teller. We're Ben and Teller. Thanks a lot. Good
night.
Listen, I think we just focus.
We trust in magic.
We've been on this journey.
Okay, trust in magic. And I'll be honest, I don't think we've got it.
Trust in magic?
I don't know. I'm trying to give a pep talk.
Okay, we're going to trust in magic. What's going on?
Don't do this to me. Yeah.
Why did I say that?
But at this stage, trusted in magic was the only hope he had left.
Okay, thank you. We're going to end with a very special encore. A couple of
buddies of ours from England. Here is Rob and Ramesh with Penn and Teller's
Liftoff to Love.
This is lift -off alarm.
Woo!
20 seconds in and our timings were already out.
I blasted off way too early.
God!
And having Penn and Teller watch as we slowly destroyed their trick wasn't
helping.
Fucking hell.
Oh, God.
Oh, fuck.
It couldn't have been going much worse.
Oh.
Oh, fuck it.
if you could even call it that, is without doubt a crime against magic.
But once the shell -shocked audience had left, we had a grovelling apology to
make to our hosts.
I can't even look you in the eye.
It's the worst thing I've ever done. I feel so sorry we sullied your theatre.
We're really sorry. And actually, we thought you were great before.
This has been a real insight.
I just don't know how you do it. We told you it had some hard parts in it. Yeah,
the hard parts were the trick.
Thank you so much for at least letting us attend. Yeah, honestly, it's been an
absolute privilege.
Our magical journey had ended in epic failure.
But that wasn't going to stop Rob from looking for a silver lining.
Joe, I think that went well.
What? In a way.
What went well?
We did street magic very well. Yeah. In our own ways.
Mentally. Yeah. You did some of your nerdy hiding the card stuff. Well, I
actually learned a trick. You took a night pad with you. Jeff McBride, new
friend of ours.
Yeah. We can always go back to his magic school.
We've got a wand. We've got a few tricks.
Like, we didn't do the main thing, but we did all the other stuff. No, we
do the main challenge, like the main point of it all. We are magicians, but
very good ones.
No. And that's not stopped us for comedy.
No, certainly not in your case. Right, do you want to go for a drink?
Yeah. Hit the strip. I might do a trick when we're at the bar.
What's that, what, pay for the round?
Come on! Yes, Becky!
Are we going to get changed first? No!
Oh, yeah? Just go into a bar, just like this, and dominate.
I don't really want to... We'll smash them. You'll be like, three times, I'll
Star Wars. Yes, please, two pints.
For a trick, we're going to try and wear these outfits without getting beat or
not. What's that? Yeah, my nipples do look in different directions.
Yeah, what's that? What's that got to do with you?
We're the Pitt twins. Deal with it.
Very superstitious.
Writing's on the wall.
Very superstitious.
Let us out.
13 months old baby, broke the looking
glass.
