It was a beautiful day.
I said, to hell with it.
Let's go have some fun, get in our canoe, and just have a great day.
Well, it didn't end that way.
It was calm water, fairly shallow.
That's how I saw it.
This membered body was found encased in cement at the bottom of Gibson Lake.
We believe the party to be a female, young female, between 14 to 24
years of age.
I didn't appreciate what I saw. I didn't understand, like, can't put words to
it, the indignity to a human body, knowing it was a younger person.
And to this day, it still bothers me when I see a picture.
A story so highly charged, it's banned in Canada.
How could we possibly know somebody that's evil?
How could we possibly?
Detail after sordid detail.
His proof, he said, homemade videotapes.
There was just no way to foresee what was on those tapes.
There it is, ladies and gentlemen.
The sexiest girl in the world.
The rapist has terrorized women all in the same general area of Scarborough.
Back up, please.
You asked me how it happened? I don't know.
I'm part of this profession and I don't know.
I'm sorry, the courtroom is full.
I wanted to come down here and basically stare into the face of evil.
I've been trying to think of how to describe it.
There's no words to describe it.
It's the most powerful thing that I've ever experienced in my life.
Everything comes back to the six tapes.
Frame by frame by frame.
One way or another, I'm going to find you. I'm going to get you, get you, get
you, get you one way or another. My name is Jennifer Black.
I was born and raised in St. Catharines, which is about two hours away from
Toronto on beautiful Lake Ontario.
80s and 90s, everybody had big hair.
Fashion was terrible.
I first met Carla when I was at number one pet center in St.
Catharines. She was working with me.
She was 15 and a half, full of life, effervescent, bubbly, bright,
pretty girl.
She wanted to be a veterinarian, and the animals received wonderful care from
her.
If you call me your big sister, I call her my little sister because she can
to me about anything.
She was young and impressionable.
She was waiting for a knight in shining armor.
I'm going to meet you.
I'm going to meet you. I'll meet you.
I will clap at your house.
When I first met Paul Bernardo, the very first thing I remember from him was
that big clap. You know, he...
And shake your hand, right? It was almost like a production for him.
I remember that from 30 years ago, eh? Holy cow.
I remember he got his video camera.
And that was a bit of a game changer because he started taking
videos of virtually everything.
He had so many characteristics and so many traits as a teenager. I was very
attracted to him.
This person of influence wanted to be friends with me, wanted to bring me
his wing.
He was going through school to become an accountant with Pricewaterhouse.
He was looking for the six -figure salary, and back then in the 80s, the
-figure salary was a big deal.
He commanded attention.
When he spoke, he was captivating, very crisp, very clear.
There was no ums and ahs.
I think he always had the idea of being famous.
One of our main pet suppliers was having a convention in Scarborough in the
Toronto area.
Carla was 17, and we thought it would be great if we could bring Carla and
another girl with us to experience the convention.
We had gone to the hotel and given two rooms, and we thought, well...
We're close enough to each other. The girls wanted their room. Let them have
their room. We took the other room.
Unbeknownst to us, the young girls had slipped down through the bar area.
That's where they met Paul.
Paul lived in Scarborough. He was at a convention in the same hotel.
It was a matter of, oh, my God, look at him. Oh, my God, look at her. And then
they came together.
Within 20 minutes, they were back in his hotel room, and they were doing what
young couples do.
Apparently, that lasted for a better part of the night, and that was their
encounter.
Police have been on the lookout for the Scarborough rapist since he struck his
first victim.
The rapist has terrorized women all in the same general area of Scarborough.
At about 1 this morning, a 17 -year -old girl got off the Lawrence bus in East
Scarborough. She was followed by a man. He grabbed her from behind, dragged her
into a backyard, and sexually assaulted her several times.
Blonde and blue -eyed, he's described as the boy next door.
Male, white, 5 foot 10 to 11, medium build.
Any 20?
I have covered some stories in my life that I can do without covering again.
And that is one of them.
I was a writer for the Toronto Star.
And I was assigned the story because they thought it would go nowhere.
Nobody else wanted it. And I took it over.
This suspect is wanted for a series of sexual assaults, two last May and one
just last week. And police say his attacks always follow the same pattern.
Canada was not that sort of a place. Our crime rate is reasonably low.
That sort of crime was not the norm by any means.
Scarborough was a nice place to raise your kids.
It was part of Metro Toronto.
Big housing area.
Nice place to live.
Until this guy spoiled it.
He was a quote -unquote ordinary man. He got to the first few simply by...
disarming them. He was charming.
When he'd approached them, nobody'd expect him to do something like that. He
looked like a nice guy.
This guy would pass you one minute and be smiling, and the next minute he'd be
at you with a knife.
Police officers were reluctant to say, yeah, we have a serial rapist.
But then we started calling him the Scarborough Rapist.
It became a little bit of a PR nightmare for them, so they started to look
harder.
So, not thrilled being in front of cameras.
I learned that very early in my career, that the cops are the fall guys, right?
So... I was assigned to the newly formed sexual assault squad.
because of the Scarborough Rapist case.
There were three detectives and myself as a detective constable.
I was very significantly younger than most of my peers and colleagues and
certainly the more senior ranking investigators attached to that task
Certainly green and anxious about, should I be here? Do I
really have enough skill and experience to be here?
I was on call, and I responded to many of the victims.
I learned that he stalked them.
He watched them.
He knew times of coming and going.
He knew what they'd done the night before. They'd read a book before they
to sleep, watched them through their windows, and see them undress and get
bed.
Hi, Carla.
Hi. Say hi to the camera.
Hi, camera.
Oh,
focus in on Carla.
Isn't she beautiful?
Come here.
Carla was swept off her feet.
by this dashing young gentleman who was always finely dressed and
wearing long jackets and always sporting a little gift for her.
There was a swagger about him, and he doted on her.
He was 23, I believe.
It was a love at first sight. Of course, Paul being the machismo man, you know,
he would never admit to something like that.
I think wooing is a perfect word to use. When it came to Paul, he was flashy.
She went from being a nondescript, very average high school girl.
Then Paul brought her to that next level of wealth or status.
Buying her the expensive clothes and the nice things.
They became left and right hand, you know, intermingled. Everything they did,
they went together, they did everything together.
Got very close very fast.
Gifts and presents and phone calls and letters and...
I love Paul, Paul, you know, Carla and Paul, Paul and Carla.
There were little hearts with, you know, KH and PB all everywhere.
I was really happy for her.
She was 17.
She really did think she was going to have the life.
What are you doing tomorrow, little girl?
I'm going to Disney World. You better go fall.
Do you like Disney World?
I don't know where to go yet. You don't know?
But I will. You will?
Do you want to meet Mickey Mouse?
The Scarborough rapist is still on the loose.
Last night, he raped again.
Seven women leaving buses have been stalked and sexually assaulted.
All victims were young women, and the neighborhood is nervous, especially
teenage girls.
I want him caught.
I don't want him on the loose.
He was an animal.
He went for a particular type, small, younger women.
There were teenagers or slightly above.
After attacking one of the victims, he broke her arm by stepping on it.
We were very conscious of the escalation of violence and the knife.
He would often cover their mouth, put clothing or an article of clothing and
them. We can talk about penetration, you know, vaginal, anal.
using his own, whether it was his genitals or his
fingers, to a knife, to sticks, to other
things that he could insert and certainly degrade, smearing them in
grinding their face and their bodies into the dirt, demeaning beyond
demeaning.
The ones that I spoke to were very badly affected.
They were scared to go out again.
They couldn't believe it had happened to them. That was the overwhelming thing.
They were badly damaged and bruised, physically and mentally.
He liked his victims to say they loved him.
I mean, he was enjoying himself, wasn't he?
He would rip hair out, pubic hair or head hair.
and collect that as souvenirs. Always took their ID and always the threat of
death and that he would return and kill them. He absolutely wanted to instill
the utmost fear in them.
The face on the poster is a puzzle. It has to be.
None of the victims has had a good look at her attacker, a man who grabs her
from behind with a knife.
Metro Police have a team of investigators working full -time on this
They've interviewed and cleared over a thousand possible suspects.
They've even offered a $150 ,000 reward.
But they still lack the key pieces to this puzzle.
The Scarborough rape case became extremely high profile.
In one case, the unknown Scarborough rapist said to a victim, I am the
Scarborough rapist, and they'll never catch me.
It was certainly in the forefront of our mind, like, where is this person? Do
they live in the area?
The entire city of Scarborough was in horror.
He broke down that whole sense of security.
Single -handedly, this lunatic just broke away that sense of security.
When you talk to these victims, they all say the same thing.
When they're being assaulted, they're looking into the eyes of death.
The key to this man's capture could very well be a woman, perhaps a wife, a
mother, a co -worker, or a lover.
Carla was the oldest of the three girls.
Hi. Lori was next.
And Tammy was the youngest.
Lori and Tammy were pretty much duplicates of their sisters.
All blonde little beauties they were and all bubbly and silly.
They all got along. I'm sure they squabbled like all sisters do.
They probably squabbled good.
But they were great.
Her parents, Dorothy and Carl, they were just very welcoming people.
I know Tammy really looked up to Carla.
She was a young ray of light.
Paul lived in Scarborough and Carla lived in St. Catharines.
He would have to drive an hour and a half down to come to see her.
I started dating Carla's sister, Lori.
In time, I got to meet Carla and then along came Paul.
In the beginning, he'd have to sleep in the family room.
Dorothy and Carl did not allow for him to spend the night in her basement room.
Of course he did. He would just sneak in after they went to bed and then wake up
early in the morning and go back on the couch.
I know they had a lot more respect for him and the fact that he had ambition
he had drive and he was older than Carla, so he was welcomed in the home
definitely. There she is, ladies and gentlemen.
The sexiest girl in the world.
Once they accepted him a little bit, a few months down the road, he was allowed
to spend the night in her room and start sharing her bed.
Whereas I, when I went up to Laurie's room, would be, what are you doing?
are you going? Leave the door open.
For me, at 18 years old, I didn't even know how to behave in a couple
relationship.
So I think I did a lot of emulating.
I looked up to Paul as a mentor. He came across as a winner.
As a young teenager, I thought it was a wonderful thing.
At 2 o 'clock Saturday morning, a young woman got off the Shepherd Eastbound bus
at Midland.
She walked north on Midland when a man approached her and started talking to
her.
The woman was grabbed, dragged behind agent court collegiate, tied up, and
raped.
This is the eighth such attack on women in the Scarborough area in three years.
The victim, though, was able to get a good look at her attacker.
In this particular attack, he came up beside her, and they walked for a few
steps together.
I think that probably created the best opportunity for her to get a really good
look. at that face in fact i recall the discussion about it being a good
-looking guy betty
clark is metro's resident police artist for two hours earlier this week she sat
down with the scarborough rapist's latest victim and created a picture of
toronto's most wanted men these eyes frightened her when she saw them.
With the faces very average, boy next door, clean cut, Canadian look to him.
Could be anybody.
Yep, report it to public affairs and you'll look after all of the media.
That composite drawing was released to the media. It was front page news.
throughout the greater toronto area for the first time in three years police
know who they're looking for we release a hotline number good morning
scarborough assault task force the composite going out almost overwhelms us
it generated hundreds and hundreds of tips this is 1990
dna is starting to evolve as a tool available to us
for identifying offenders.
We are going to ask every possible suspect to provide a sample of DNA.
We were of the belief that DNA would absolutely 100 % help us to identify
the unknown Scarborough rapist.
Police in Scarborough have moved into high gear.
Auxiliary officers were called in and are going door to door.
The Scarborough rapist attacked again last weekend.
We have a very good picture of what the individual looks like.
There were many suspects that had extensive investigative work done.
We're chasing all the possible suspects over months and months.
It's hard to believe he can go underground between attacks.
He's out there.
Someone knows who he is.
After the release of the composite, we're now months down the road and there
were no more Scarborough rapist attacks.
Why did they stop?
The training says his behavior won't stop.
Is the individual dead, in jail?
Is it that the individual has moved, gone somewhere else to get off the
to St.
Catharines and moved in with the Homolka family to be with Carla.
I think at the start, Dorothy and Carl
looked at him like we all did.
Wow, he's impressive.
He's greeting Carla like a princess.
But I think the arrogance, he had that little bout of arrogance encircling
him, and I think they might have caught wind of that.
My name is Leanne Plato, and I worked with Carla
at Martindale Animal Hospital in 1990.
I would have been 16, and she would have been around 20.
I wanted to be a veterinarian.
So I started working there as a co -op for school.
In general, when I first met her, she was very nice.
She'd been working as a veterinary technician.
Carla loved telling me and everyone else about her relationship with Paul.
She described it like something out of a movie or a fairy tale.
It was like a whirlwind romance was how she described it.
As I worked there longer, Carla would say, he doesn't want me to drive.
So he's coming to pick me up.
I can't drive to and from work anymore.
And he doesn't want me going out.
And she would need to leave work exactly on time, exactly when she was told.
That started to be a regular occurrence, that she would just always tell us, he
said I can't do this, or I need to leave and I need to leave now.
Carla was completely excited to be able to have her boyfriend there and spend
their first Christmas together with the family.
Here we go.
This is Christmas 1990, everybody.
They were all drinking for the Christmas festivities.
And Tammy was drinking too.
She was 15 years old.
Her parents said that she could have a couple drinks and not to overdo it.
Paul had given her alcohol.
Are you in the Christmas cheer? That's all I want to know.
Yeah. You are?
Are you sure?
Carla told me Paul herself and Tammy were in the rec room, and the kind of
they were having, her sister had never tried anything like that and really
wanted to try it.
So she had one, and then she had another one.
It was, uh...
After midnight, 1 o 'clock, 2 o 'clock, I think it was, I got a phone call.
Laurie was very upset, very hysterical thing.
She's not breathing.
They were sitting on the couch, and Tammy was behind them, and they heard a
noise, and Carla said she looked back, and Tammy was on the floor.
And she had a lump in her, like a big gaseous lump, from what I
remember, like a bubble.
In her throat area, which she told me they thought she was going to vomit or
something, but she had passed out on the floor.
Later I'd find out from Paul she was pronounced dead. She had thrown up and
choked on her vomit.
Such a tragic and sudden death.
We just chalked it up to a tragic accident.
We were all in shock.
It just happened so suddenly. Just a horrific tragedy.
We all loved Tammy.
You know, Tammy was a sweet, vibrant, young girl that had a whole life ahead
her.
And...
Tammy was the epitome of a healthy teenager.
Very athletic and always out running and always out and about.
She was just 15 years old.
To the parents and the family, what do you say to somebody like that?
There's no real approach for something like that.
Carla was, she was distraught, obviously.
This is still one of the things that just stick in my head so vividly.
her while she cried and told me about Tammy and how Tammy died.
At the funeral, Paul and Carla had this aura around them of leave them because
they're inconsolable.
And Paul stood off to the side, and I remember Paul was worried that he's
to get in trouble because he'd given her alcohol.
So it was kind of hush -hush and don't talk about this, don't talk about that.
My thought was, he's sweating right now. He was shitting brick, clearly.
A month or so after Tammy's death, they moved out of the Homoka household, out
of their basement.
into this beautiful house in Port Duluth in St. Catharines.
I felt like Paul had money. I didn't know where it came from, but I think at
time I thought, well, he's an accountant, maybe he's very successful.
I think Paul just, he wanted a place.
He just wanted a place.
He just started molding her, just molding her, prepping her.
I'm the one and only.
I am going to be the one and only.
Once she moved in with Paul, it was very much documenting everything they did on
a regular basis, taking videos of virtually everything.
Ooh, I can see their tongues right now.
Does it get close?
I don't know.
I was there two or three times a week, mostly on weekends, and that's usually
when I spent most of our time with them.
Hi!
Paul and Carla became team Bernardo, the public eye couple.
Look what I can afford, look what I can do, look what I have.
Okay, buddy, sit.
Okay, buddy doing his tricks. Take one.
Down, jump.
They got a dog. They got a Rottweiler, and his name is Buddy.
Roll over.
And Paul did not want that dog.
Dogs were messy. Dogs were stinky. Dogs did cause a lot of damage.
But I think what it came down to was getting her a puppy made him a great
My dog, Bud, now Buddy, is going to do some tricks for us because he's a Chick
-fil -A dog.
Go, Bud, go.
Okay, Bud, this is for you if you do your tricks. First of all, you're
safe, so we'll take a step.
So, down.
Okay, roll over.
And it got to the point where Paul would put Buddy downstairs because he hated
cleaning up the piss off the floor when Buddy would jump and piss all over the
place.
Paul would take him and lock him in the cage downstairs. And they had a big
metal crate for him in the basement for that purpose.
In the early morning hours of June 15th, 14 -year -old Leslie Mahaffey told a
friend she was heading home, but she never arrived.
Leslie was, I hate to use the expression, troubled teenage girl,
teenage girl.
I don't think anybody thought for a minute that she had been abducted.
She's a runaway.
She had been with friends and stayed out late.
When she returned home, she found the door locked.
I believe she was a hard -to -handle teenager. She was going through a few
things. That her mother finally was at her breaking point and said, enough is
enough, lock the door.
As a mother, you can get to that point where, you know, enough is enough. This
isn't a hotel, as my dad used to say.
She phoned a friend, seeing if she could stay at her place.
The answer was no.
And so she said, fine, she'll just...
go home and somebody is bound to open the door eventually, I think she felt.
You know, St. Catharines was a small city.
I remember hearing about the disappearance and kind of getting a
out as we all were. It was the talk.
It was very, very strange for someone to go missing like that.
I remember, Leslie, it was around my age.
I remember thinking, oh, yeah, she's run away, and they'll find her.
I was a media relations officer when Leslie disappeared.
And I remember the editor of a paper calling me up and saying, Carrie, is
anything to this? Like, we don't want to create a missing person story if it
isn't really there.
I said, you know, no, I don't think it's anything more than typical,
more than usual.
It's a girl that didn't come home.
And she'll show up one day. She'll show up.
Eventually, they all do.
She wasn't considered instantly to be a victim when she went missing.
It was downplayed, if anything.
Paul and Carla got married in the summer of 91.
I do remember the question being raised, why are they still getting married so
shortly after Carla's sister Tammy's death?
The quote was, the show must go on.
He had seen it as, it's been six months, how much more do we have to mourn?
So, you know, it's time to move on.
It was beautiful.
There were moments of extreme joy.
He was dressed like a rock star.
She had this amazing dress.
It was not cheap. I remember thinking to myself, that's five times what I paid
for my car.
There was seven bridesmaids. It was over the top.
Frills and lace and just over the top, over the top, like a royal wedding. It's
like the prince and the princess.
I'm Bill Greco.
I live in Thorold, Ontario.
It's a nice little town in between Welland, Niagara Falls, and St.
It was a beautiful day, and it's like, let's go for it. To hell with it.
Let's go have some fun, bring some cold beers, get in my canoe, and have a
great day.
I loaded everything into the canoe.
And I had to find a launching point, and I found a perfect rock.
I saw blocks of concrete that were sitting there, maybe two, two and a half
off the shoreline.
I saw one of them was broken in half, touched with my paddle.
I saw blood on the side of it.
Little droplets of blood.
But when I looked in between, it was pink.
I really, I didn't appreciate what I saw. I didn't understand, like,
it wasn't a fish.
I looked at it very closely.
It was a foot.
Members of the Criminal Investigation Branch from the Niagara Regional Police
Divisional Headquarters in Welland entered into an investigation of the
discovery of what appeared to be human remains on the shoreline of Lake Gibson.
This membered body was found on the bottom of Gibson Lake outside St.
Catharines, encased in cement.
Four to six!
At Paul and Carla's wedding, we're all lingering in the bar and seeing it on
news.
We all got talking.
It was such a dark conversation.
They said, it's not somebody from around the area. Anybody from the area knows
every year, halfway through the summer, that Lake Gibson drops three to five
feet. So if you're going to dispose of something there, it's going to be found.
How was your day?
When those remains were found.
I've been trying to think of how to describe it.
There's no words to describe it.
In my thoughts, that there's no way that could be Leslie. Why would it be
Leslie? And then it turned out it was.
14 -year -old Leslie Mahaffey from Burlington was identified by dental
You know, I was wrong. We were wrong.
Still, I think about it.
She was very well liked in our school.
Had lots of friends.
She was into, like, love and peace.
Till this day, it still bothers me when I see her picture.
What a beautiful young woman she would have been.
I'm sorry.
I knew sooner or later this was going to get to me.
This can't be happening.
They have to be wrong.
This couldn't have happened to somebody my age.
This is unbelievable.
Remains in our Lake Gibson, which is right around the corner from where I
Leslie was in the wrong place at the wrong time, a victim of opportunity.
Police say the killer probably lives in the area.
Paul would turn up at work to pick Carla up, and he would say, Oh, hey, Leanne,
how are you?
He got to know me pretty well.
Sometimes he'd come up to the counter.
He'd say, How's life? How are you doing?
How's school?
As time progressed, I got to know him a little more.
When he came in, he'd say, oh, you still got that boyfriend?
You still hanging out with that guy? How's that going?
And then questions got a little more personal. What are you doing tonight?
What are your plans for this weekend?
Hey, why don't you come hang out with us?
I thought, I don't know. I don't know how Carla would feel about that.
And I questioned in my mind why they would want to hang out with me. I was a
little kid.
My feelings, I guess, changed.
And I would say, I got to study, and I would make excuses.
Police are renewing their appeal to the Scarborough rapist to give himself up. A
year ago, police released a composite likeness of the man. He hasn't struck
since.
14 -year -old Leslie Mahaffey's death is still under investigation.
The hunt goes on with no arrests imminent.
15 -year -old Kristen French, a high school athlete and a straight -A
was abducted from the front lawn of this church near her home this afternoon.
French was last seen at her Holy Cross High School in St. Catharines. She
disappeared while walking home at about 2 .45.
She was last seen wearing her school uniform of a green plaid skirt with a
V -neck sweater.
We just want her back, and I know she wants to come back too, but somehow or
other she can't get back.
Young girl is minor in business, abducted off the street in midday late.
Mother went to the scene and saw Kristen's shoe at the scene.
So they knew within a very, very, very short period of time that something was
really wrong and that Kristen had been abducted.
People saw that happen.
And if Christy can hear me, if you can get away someplace, Christy, either
home or the Niagara police, as soon as possible.
My first involvement in the disappearance of Kristen French and the
story, began shortly after her abduction. We were to go to St.
and our task was to find the kidnapper of Christian French.
It sounds crazy to think that that would be an assignment, but I think it speaks
to the competitive nature of news gathering in Toronto and the greater
area.
There was evidence left at the scene for the police to work on.
Police were told by witnesses that a car had pulled over.
There was a feeling from some witnesses that there may have been more than one
occupant in the car.
This witness was one of at least two who were able to provide police with a
crucial clue.
There were two abductors, not one.
Our next witness, a 49 -year -old woman, saw what almost certainly was Kristen
struggling with her captors in the church parking lot.
A couple of people in a car pulling over, engaging Kristen in some sort of
conversation, her backing up away, and ultimately I think a witness said it
looked like she was grabbed and pulled into the car.
The police were racing against the clock to try and find this teenage girl.
Those first few days in St. Catharines, there was a palpable sense of fear.
Young and old, their faces revealed the grim task ahead.
2 ,200 people, more than four times the number expected in today's search.
Whenever we look at our green ribbons, we think of Kristen and hope for the
best.
She's just fun and funny, and she would always try to make
you laugh and tell you not to worry about anything.
We're going to be searching the area, Port Dalhousie area.
We want to know that we are thinking of you and that everything
can be done is being done.
And we'll get you back real quick.
Some articles of clothing were found, but police say nothing that can
immediately be tied to the case.
The fact that Kristen was missing really hit home for me. We were the same age
and participated in the same activities.
The community rallied together. Everybody was searching for her.
We had vigils.
I told Carla that my mom and I were going, and I said, you should come with
because I would talk about it at work with her, and she would say, I know it's
so devastating, so horrible, I can't imagine.
how this could happen.
She said, this is just devastating for all of us. And I said, well, you should
come with us. And she said, yeah, maybe I will.
She's still out there, and they just want to express that feeling to the
and to Christy if she has a chance to watch that everybody's behind her and to
hold on until the police get there and get her.
Kristen was found not far from the edge of the roadway.
This is a wooded area, as you can see.
Sometimes used as a dumping ground for debris.
Frankly, I didn't see her. I was there at the scene, but I didn't see, I didn't
go close.
The body was found face down, curled up in a fetal position.
She was in the woods high grass and naked.
Her hair had been cut.
She was not dismembered or anything like that. Her body was intact.
What was missing from Kristen was a Mickey Mouse watch and an item of
There were connections made between the state of Kristen French's body and what
the autopsy and initial investigation into the death of...
Leslie Mahaffey had shown investigators believed there was a probable link
between the two.
Certainly the geography indicated that it was very possible that the two
had been committed by the same person or persons.
We don't want to heighten paranoia in the community. What we do want is to
the level of caution. I think it's important that everybody realize that
danger is out there.
People like us, we do move out of the big cities to come to a small area like
this, a small town, and expect our children to be safe.
We don't feel safe anymore.
You know, you just don't. It's just, you know, I ask myself, how did this
happen? Why?
St.
Catherine's became a different place after Leslie and Kristen's death.
Nobody went out on their own.
Nobody. It was a big turnaround for St. Catharines that always, you know, was
such a homey, quiet, comfortable place to live. It now become
almost held prisoner by something that was unforeseen.
One day, I went over to Paul and Carla's house, and we were talking,
and Paul said to me, hey, do you want a drink?
Sure. At the time, my drink was gin and tonic.
And he said to Carla, get a drink, and she brought it back.
And she handed it to me and put it in my hand, and I received it, and he walked
up and he grabbed it, and he just hauled off and backhanded her.
Like, almost off her feet.
He yanked her into the kitchen, and he just chewed a hole off of her.
When you bring drinks, you serve our guests.
It was supposed to be served on a silver platter with a napkin on it.
I tried to defend her, but I just remember him telling me to back off.
my house. I'll do as I say. Shut your fucking mouth, basically.
Two minutes later, Carla came out with tears in her eyes, glass in the silver
tray, handed it to me and apologized.
For me, at 20 years old, I don't know what to do with this. I don't know what
say. I don't know what direction to take. Like, is it even proper for me to
something?
And I didn't.
I mean, I don't know why. I kind of guess I know why, but at that time, I
powerless and I was...
A coward, I guess.
I had noticed her dressing differently and dressing more to cover up, I guess.
But again, not really realizing why.
Not putting all those together. Well, why would I?
You know, you'd think she was happy. She didn't say really anything otherwise,
so.
I remember Carla coming in to work, and Carla was always trying to
explain it away.
She kept on trying to make excuses for why she was injured.
We all thought that he was beating her.
She needed to leave him.
Or...
He was going to kill her or beat her beyond an inch of her life.
When Carla Hamalka finally interacted with the police, he was beaten
to a pulp.
And that's all the police know.
But then it evolves into a much larger story, one of the biggest spectacles in
Canadian legal history.
Carla Homolka tells the police that her husband, Paul Bernardo, is
actually the murderer of both Leslie Mahaffey and Kristen French.
Not only that, Carla goes on to say Paul actually videotaped the assault on the
girls, which is a shocking revelation.
But the question is, where are these tapes?
Do they even still exist?
I want to do everything I can for you to put that bastard away forever.
He doesn't deserve to live, but I want him to rot in jail because dying is too
good for him.
