[Leroy] It don't make no sense!

Somebody gonna fool around

and get killed is what they gonna get.

They gonna get K-I-illed.

Killed, Cora. It don't make no sense to me.

Well, good morning, everybody.

Good morning, Ms. Cora. Mr. Brown!

I'm mad. That's what I am! I'm mad!

Already? You two didn't go on your walk?

Cora, did you stand him up again?

I didn't stand him up, Ms. Anastasia.

We did go on our walk.

Then that should have put you in a good mood.

So why are you mad?

I'm not just mad. I'm hot mad!

Hot mad? Wow!

[Cora] Well, you know,

he just mad because they was

driving fast up and down the road.

No, they wasn't just driving up and down the street fast.

They driving up and down the street like demons!

They just acting like demons, Cora!

Mr. Brown, they were driving fast,

but don't call them demons.

Okay, you right. I'm not calling them demons.

I'm calling them evil demons, Cora! Evil demons!

No, no, Mr. Brown is right, Cora.

They drive down that road very fast.

Well, yeah, alright. I guess they do.

Well, what you doing, Mr. Brown?

I'm calling somebody!

Well, who are you calling?

I'm going to call anybody who knows somebody

that can get somebody to do something about it.

Now, this really got him riled up.

Yeah, you know, we have our assisted living facility here.

Then there's another one across the street.

And a lot of the elderly like to walk up and down this road.

Mr. Brown, you should call our councilman.

Ah, they ain't going to do nothing!

Ah, they can put a speed bump or those cameras,

you know, that gives tickets.

Oh, right, right!

There's a lot they can do.

-Yes! -[Leroy] Oh, really?

I'm going to call the councilman.

I'ma call him.

Well, actually, for our district, it's Councilwoman.

Oh, well what's her name?

Councilwoman Sylvia Hinton.

-Oh! -[Cora] But, Mr. Brown,

you know, she spoke down at the church.

I know how to get in touch with her.

-Oh, her? -Yeah.

Cora, she was a little tangy under the altar.

Mr. Brown, don't do that.

-Good morning, y'all. -Hey, everybody.

-Good morning! -Hey!

We want to thank you guys

for helping us make Philip feel special.

Oh, what, y'all gave him the money?

We did. He was so excited, Cora.

He wanted to know if there was rules on how he could spend it.

Oh, what did you say?

I told him he could spend it however he wants.

You didn't tell him he should save some of it?

I mean, well, normally we do, but, you know,

we've been so hard on Philip about everything lately,

so we just decided to let him do his thing.

Yeah, we want him to know that we're happy

and we're proud of him.

I mean, well, look, Philip, on the honor roll?

Some of our speeches must be coming through.

-[Cora] All right. -Of course they are.

Hey, you guys.

-Hey, baby girl. -Hey, honey.

What you doing today?

Uh, nothing.

-[Leah] Oh. -Miss Anastasia.

Are you ready for today?

-I think so. -Let me tell you what I'm doing!

[excited giggling]

What the hell? What's up baby?

I am sick of my daughter not talking to me, Jeremy.

That's what!

Yeah, Councilman Henson? Yes.

Her number? 555...

Okay, tell me now.

It sounds like this is about Landon.

Well, who else?

So, did you do your workout by the lacrosse practice?

I did. And it was so perfect. I went for a run,

and then I ended the run right as they were ending.

Oh, that's good.

And I didn't go too hard.

I made sure I was still looking cute.

We know how to look cute during a workout.

A skill a girl must master.

Exactly.

So, did he notice you?

Oh, I made sure he did.

I was over there panting like I was out

of breath while drinking from my cute water bottle.

But you didn't act like you noticed him.

Oh, no, of course not. You taught me well.

And, of course, he came right over.

I know he did.

You have played this perfectly!

What did he say?

Okay, he was all like, "Hey, it's Sandra, right?"

And I acted like I was so surprised.

I was like, "Hey".

[giggling]

And he was like, "You're in my wellness class".

And I was like, "Oh, yeah,

you're the teacher's assistant, right?"

And he was like, "Hi, my name's Landon".

And I was like, "Nice to meet you, Landon".

As if I didn't know his name,

dormitory, sports schedule, or major.

Oh, good girl. So, when are you guys going out?

How do you know we're going out?

Oh, come on, girl.

You went to the Anastasia school for how to catch a man.

I know he asked you out.

Ms. Anastasia, you are so good at this.

Okay, he did ask me if I want to go to lunch after class.

Oh, lunch after class.

I love that for a first pseudo date.

Me, too. It's perfect.

Now, last thing. Don't eat like you eat here.

No? But I like to eat, Ms. Anastasia.

I know. That's why I said this.

Order a salad, an acai bowl, something light and cute.

Oh.

Do I have to eat like that all the time?

No.

You're going to let him bring you around

to the burger and fries.

And you'll eventually give in, reluctantly.

Oh that's good. Okay, Ms. Anastasia.

I got to go to a study group. See you later.

Oh, hey, Mom.

Hey, baby girl!

See you later.

Bye, Sandra.

[upbeat R&B music]

There we go. Right there.

Mr. Brown, what you doing?

Oh, I'm fittin' to have a meeting.

-Here? -Yes, here.

Well, I mean, so what are you having a meeting about?

I'm having a meeting about SD, Coral.

-SD? -[Leroy] SD.

-What is that? -Speed demons.

Oh, so who are you having a meeting with?

Well, I'm going to have a city councilwoman

and a few concerned citizens that are going to come

and join my meeting.

You got a strong grip. You bent my knuckle.

Have a seat.

Right here, Mr. Johnson, Ms. Mays. I'm Cora.

-Mr. Brown's daughter. -Yes.

Thank you all for joining us.

I'm glad you could get off of work early.

You don't work.

Okay, well, that's even better. Thank you so much.

Well, we're waiting on the other guests, so please--

Mr. Brown, you have a few other guests.

Oh, please. Please!

-Come on. Come on. -Have a seat.

You look like James Brown.

-Please! How are you? -Just come right here.

Thank you. Are you Ms. Pearlson?

Get on over there. Get over there.

Thank you so much for joining us.

Point of order! Point of conversation!

We're gathered here today for this crazy thing called life.

-Mm-hmm. -[Leroy] Life is...

Let's get crazy and let's go nuts.

People have been speeding through this community

without any regards for people that live in this community.

-Mr. Brown? -[Crowd] Right, right.

Yes? Oh, here she comes. All rise! All rise!

Rise for the incoming of the councilwoman.

Thank you. Sit.

Thank you. Oh, it's so good to see you!

You must be Leroy.

Yes, I am Leroy Brown,

a concerned citizen of the United States.

God bless America, and God bless us all.

Leroy, I applaud you for seeing an issue in our community

and doing something about it.

Most people stand by and watch.

It takes people like Leroy and all of you who decide

to stand up and say something.

Yes, mainly people like me. Thank you.

I'm so glad that you could be here with us for this great

and wonderful experience.

Well, you got me here, so let's hear it.

Well, as you may know, or as you may not know,

but if you know, you will know now,

that people in our community are angry

about people driving through our neighborhoods to and fro,

seeking who they may destroy.

-Am I right about it? -Yes!

Am I right about it?

Yes, that's our concern,

that somebody's going to get killed!

Eventually, somebody could die even.

People, we have senior citizen centers that live around here,

assisted living people that live around here.

And yes, some of us like to walk,

and it is very dangerous.

Well, I can help. I absolutely can help.

Well, but what can we do?

What we can do? Speed bumps. I come up with that myself.

Speed bumps... We put six foot speed bumps.

A car that comes along hits that speed bump,

jumping right up out the city.

That's what we'll do, just... Right on out the city.

That's what we'll do.

Well it's a major road, and it's commercial,

so it would not be zoned for speed bumps.

-No speed bumps? -[Councilwoman] No speed bumps.

Well then, what do we got to offer?

Well, uhm, maybe... I got it! I got another one.

Tell me if you can help me with this one.

We get light poles and put cameras on them with tasers.

And when the cars come by, poof, zap, we tase them,

and the car just stops right there in the middle

of a busy highway.

Only the people that speed can get stuck.

What do you think about that?

That is a possibility.

But it takes some time and money.

But I have an even better and faster solution.

But we pay our taxes.

Yes, we should get what we want. We pay taxes!

I can set up patrol cars

and speed traps all along this road.

We've had great success with these programs

in other communities.

Once people start getting pulled over all the time,

at all hours of the day,

the speed drastically changes, and fast.

Now, you can do that, Councilwoman?

I can... and I will!

Y'all give it up for her. Give it.

-[applause] -God bless America.

God bless America!

Ah, bad grandpa. You crazy, man.

I know, man.

See that young fool thought he was going to race me?

See, these cats look at me, and they think because I'm old

I won't speed their asses to the ground.

I sent that fool and his sports car crying home to his mama.

He was like, [weeping]!

This is outrageous! Who is this?

That's Vinny, the big, dumb speed dummy.

Your mama's a speed dummy.

Your mama's a speed dummy!

Your auntie with no toes

the one that wears flip-flops is a speed dummy.

[Cora] Oh, okay!

Your mama with no legs, they call her Eileen,

-is a speed dummy. -Whoa!

Your grown up sister is a speed dummy.

All right, enough is enough. We have guests!

-Hey. -Hey.

-Hey. How y'all doin? -[upbeat R&B music]

Ooh, y'all look busy.

Yes, I am just helping Mr. Efe with his college application.

College application? Wow!

I know. Isn't it amazing?

You know, and it all started with Sandra's exercise

of doing a vision board for her school.

Miss Kimberly suggested I do one because it was a good idea.

Because of my age, I had stopped dreaming.

Hold on, that's not good.

Mr. Efe, you never can stop dreaming now.

With a lot of heartache and self-reflection.

A lot of heartache?

Heartache.

Yeah, we both had a lotta heartache.

Well, why is that?

Well, we didn't know what we wanted to do with the rest

of our lives.

You too?

Yeah, but the vision board put

a lot of things into perspective.

Well, you know what? That is so good.

Y'all make me want to go back and update my vision board.

It was the best thing I ever did.

Oh, so you're going back to college.

Ah, yes.

You know, Miss Cora, I have a bachelor's,

but I never did anything with it.

But I want to teach.

Oh, that is great. You want to teach!

Yes, yes.

Miss Kimberly said that she would help me.

And I'll help you, too.

You know, I was a teacher for years!

Oh, yes, I know.

You know, I will take any help I can get.

But first, I have to get my teacher credentials.

[Cora] Right, right.

Well, I found this online program through my college

that allows people with a bachelor's

to get a teaching credential,

and then it sets them up to get a master's in education.

Oh...

Oh, Mr. Efe,

you're going to inspire so many people around here.

Oh, I would love that.

[Vinny] Damn it, damn it, damn it!

Brown, Brown, Brown, where are you?

Where's God's little Christian?

I got to find him!

What's wrong with you?

Oh, man, I am so mad! Oh, my God, I'm a... whoa!

Wait till I get my hands on him!

Now, why are you coming here all this cussing?

Look, look, your daddy made me cuss, okay?

And I got some more cuss words when I find his little ass!

What has got you so excited?

This is the second speeding ticket I got this week!

Well, that's what you get!

You need to stop racing and speeding down this road.

Miss Cora, I need to correct you.

I do not speed. I drive with a purpose.

Brown, Brown, I'ma... whoa! My, ooh!

[upbeat R&B music]

Hey, Miss Anastasia.

Sandra, I have been dying for an update.

How's it been going with Landon?

Things are going really well.

[giggling]

So you've been letting it take its time?

Of course. I'm never thirsty.

Thirsty?

Oh, it's like when you're desperate or doing too much.

Oh, I got it.

Yes, girlfriend, never be thirsty.

So lunch went well?

Lunch went really well.

And now a couple days later,

we're having lunch every day after class.

And he's walking me to my lit class.

Oh, lunch and walks... I love it!

I know, and he's texting me "Good morning"

and "How's your day" and "How's lit class?"

Oh, Sandra, you have played this perfectly!

Of course I have, because I've had the best coach in the world.

I love you, Miss Anastasia.

Love you more!

[Leah] Hey, Sandra.

Oh, hey, Mom.

What did I miss?

Oh, nothing.

Well, it didn't look like nothing.

I was just talking to Miss Anastasia.

-About? -Mom...

What? What?

Girl, "Mom..." what? I want in. I'm your mother.

Mom, you're being thirsty.

[sighs] "I'm being thirsty?" Okay.

Yeah, you are.

Okay, I'm off to my study group. Bye.

-Hmm... -Bye, Miss Anastasia.

[breathes deeply] Okay, Miss Anastasia.

I'ma need your help with this.

With what, Leah?

With Sandra opening up to me.

Oh, she will, Leah.

Hmm... Not if you keep being her best friend.

-Are you upset with me? -I am.

Why? What do you want me to do?

Not talk to her?

Well... yes.

-Are you serious? -Very!

She just wants advice about a boy.

Well, then you need to tell her to talk to me.

I'm her mother.

Leah, your daughter loves and respects you.

I'm no threat to you.

You are a threat to me, Miss Anastasia!

then she is not running and talking to me,

and I'm sick of it!

Fine, I will stop talking to her.

Thank you!

You need to slow your butt down.

I need to talk to Mr. Brown.

Like, right now, because this is getting out of hand.

This is crazy.

The police are pulling everybody over that come through there.

[Leah breathes angrily]

What's wrong with you?

You got that look in your face from years ago when you was

about to beat Lori Roberts' ass for trying to talk to me.

Good... 'cause now, it's Anastasia Devereaux.

What?

I caught her looking at my ass the other day.

I don't know what it is.

I just got this energy about me, babe.

I don't even be trying.
