[Vick] We got an opportunity to do something

that's never been done in Norfolk State.

Winning the MEAC Championship.

My plan coming here is to put Norfolk State on the map

and change the culture.

We have a quarterback competition.

We're gonna get the sparkle out of them. Don't lose it.

[announcer]The Spartans show all kinds of heart,

but they lose in a heart-breaker.

I told you what you was getting ready to run into.

I do feel like your team is putting up a fight.

My family has always been there for me.

I'm still happy you made the decision

to let me come out here and coach.

We're struggling with being apart from each other.

[Vick] I don't want him to ever think it's not okay to cry.

Damn, Calvary.

We got 12 penalties.

Let me handle it. I got it.

Discipline, discipline, discipline.

[man] Stand back! Stand back! Damn, man!

I got suspended for two weeks.

[Vick] You need to know who we're going after.

Gotta find the right guys.

It was just best for me to red shirt.

-No! -[man] Oh, my God.

[announcer] Another disaster for the Spartans.

I've given them everything.

-The kick is blocked-- -Pay attention!

[announcer] And the Bears pick it up.

That's losing effort. I'm sick of it, man.

It makes me question whether I could do this.

Seniors, I'm sorry.

This shit getting real old, man, losing games like this.

[reporter] Do you have to remind yourself,

being a first-year head coach,

it's not always going to be this way?

Obviously, we would have loved to have won more games

and be in a better position right now.

Kijafa told me don't make any excuses

when I chose to come to Norfolk State.

But Norfolk State hasn't won a lot of games

in the last 20 years.

And so, it kind of makes me question

whether this was the best start for me.

After such a rough season,

I gotta figure out the right decision

for myself and my family. For them,

my decision to go to Norfolk State was a sacrifice.

Long-distance phone calls

and just being away from one another.

I'm not sure about any of this anymore.

They will keep me sane.

They will keep me going.

Now, he definitely sees that it's gonna take a lot more work.

I mean, it's time for you to be like, yo,

did I make the right decision?

So, what else did we take away from this season?

It was fun being there, seeing you do what you dream of,

-you know. -[London] Missing school.

[Kijafa] Missing school?

But why do y'all think Coach needs to stay at Norfolk State?

Regardless of how tough this season has been.

I think to, like, prove them wrong.

Till next year, it's new people, a new year.

Why after the first year,

you're not doing the usual and leave?

I don't think-- That's not a good look.

[London] That's like loser mentality.

[Vick] My family wants me to stay at Norfolk State.

Wants me to keep coaching, keep pushing.

I'm happy that my family believes I can.

But ultimately, I gotta make the decision.

[Kijafa] So, how do you feel about this game, Howard game?

What do we have to do to win?

Man, they just gotta come focused.

Come focused and play for four quarters.

We are gonna go tour on Howard.

I'm actually super excited.

I don't know, I've never been to D.C.

I think it's gonna be super cool.

So, we'll see.

I love that it's an HBCU.

I want London to be happy in life,

so any college that she picks,

I feel like that is where she's meant to be.

But secretly, I do hope that she goes to a HBCU.

It's really important for her to see her culture.

And they can help her to become the best person that she can be.

Hey, y'all, I know this season's been tough, especially for you.

But at least we get a trip to Vegas to go see Daddy

go to the College Football Hall of Fame!

[all cheer]

[Vick] When I found out that I was getting inducted

into the College Football Hall of Fame, I was ecstatic.

a lot of times, we gotta keep challenging them

to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

But previous years, I feel like the coaches believed in me more.

It's very difficult being a star running back on a losing team

because it's kind of messing with your mental.

I'm so grateful that you retained me.

Special teams this year was a big reason

why we didn't win games.

I have to evaluate Coach Woodbury

they can run this ball back.

It's not really about blaming people,

So we were in the Michael Vick experience

when we played football.

And now we are in the Coach Vick experience.

The season was tough, it was challenging,

but I know the journey is just starting

and that it's going to get greater later.

We are proud of you, and we're here to support you all the way.

[Brenda] You did a good job.

[C.J.] We grew up on this.

Summertime, come out here, be out in the water, man.

-Playing on the rocks. -[Vick] Right.

We used to call it skipping rocks,

so we just skipped rocks

all the way down to the end.

[Vick] After that last loss,

I just needed to go back to Newport News.

I needed to go back to my sanctuary

where all my dreams were made.

I wanted to go and think about my mom,

think about why I even came back to Virginia.

I lived over here.

Our projects was right behind these.

Played football in this field right here.

Talking about the origin

of everything I've ever been through, man.

It actually happened down here.

Community League has done

a great job of eradicating things

that young men like myself and other peoples get into.

For me, it was dealing with the dogs,

and that's what led to a lot of bad things.

[Kijafa] After Mike was in prison,

I didn't think he'd be able to come back and play,

and I'm so happy he never gave up.

[Vick] Coming back into the NFL, I had a lot to prove.

They took the chance on Michael, and it paid off.

I set a lot of goals when I was away,

and now it's time to dream chase again.

[Joy] When you've made mistakes and then do the work,

what better example do you have to teach young people

to understand what second chances are about?

[Prime] He's been praised and hated, ridiculed,

so he has that capability

because of what God has allowed him to go through.

[Strahan] The longer you don't give up, you don't quit,

you always got a chance to make a comeback,

and we all love a great comeback.

[Vick] We all try to do the right things.

We had great mentors.

Both of my uncles kept me out of the street.

Going around Newport News,

it reminded me of why I came back in the first place.

This season has been tough.

But mentorship played a big role in me taking this job.

And being at HBCU allows me to give back in the community,

be a part of the community.

It's an honor and a privilege to be coaching here.

I want to fight the fight.

I'm ready to come back in a major way.

It's really a time for them to be honest with me

and for me to be honest with them.

I can't guarantee you no star position next year.

There's going to be somebody behind your ass

In some cases,

these conversations can determine

whether a player comes back or not.

What's up, baby? How you feeling?

Makai let Coach Adams know

If he stays, I honestly think

Makai can be a special piece for us.

The season didn't go how we wanted it to, for sure.

There was a lot of confusion in certain areas.

Sometimes they look at me like I'm the guy in the room.

Other times, I did not play the whole game.

You felt like you couldn't get a groove

because as soon as you get a pass caught, you're out.

So I was trying to be perfect.

I thought you played your ass off.

I want you to be here. Obviously,

I want to put good players in the right position

and set yourself up to go do great things.

But it's gonna be a little tougher next year.

I'm going to demand more out of y'all.

Y'all gonna be one year older, more mature,

and we're going to bring in more DBs.

As a coach, once you start seeing the same things,

eventually, you want to make a change. I got goals,

and I got dreams, aspirations,

and places I want to get to in my life, as well.

I think about it a lot, so I don't know, it's tough.

I don't need to talk to him.

I figured that.

Vinson didn't have a strong finish

like I would have hoped for.

I know next year he'll have to come in,

and he'll have to compete for the quarterback position.

I don't think he wants to do that.

I think he wants to get a clean slate,

I feel like I put some good stuff on film.
