NARRATOR: Evil...

..powerful...

..uncompromising...

..ruthless.

Behind closed doors, a private hell.

- Tyrants often deviate
in their sexual behaviour.

- He fantasised about older women.

- He puts make-up on.

- He had thousands of concubines.

- They were this glamorous,
gun-toting sex objects.

MAN: Fire on designated targets.

NARRATOR: The psychological insights
of the degenerate and deviant.

WOMAN: He was obsessed
with aphrodisiacs.

- It's typical of somebody
who's sexually repressed.

- (gunfire)

NARRATOR: On October
the 20th 2011,

Muammar Gaddafi, the
deposed leader of Libya,

was captured by revolutionary forces

and shown merciless mob justice.

- He was found in a drainage area.

And the mob set upon him.

They literally ripped him apart.

Uh, they beat him up,
they brutalised him

using a bayonet. He quite
literally died by the sword.

A really bloody and brutal end
to this dictator's life.

NARRATOR: Brutal in the extreme.

But for the young women of Libya,
it meant they were finally safe

from a serial sexual predator

who had gone from being
a revolutionary liberator

to a violent letch.

- I think he was terrified by women

and he was terrified
by his own sexuality.

And that's what led to these
deviant, almost perverted, paths.

- He portrayed himself as a
revolutionary, as a hero.

Um, and that quickly changed into

becoming a supporter
of terrorist networks.

NARRATOR: After
the tyrant is toppled,

and the cathartic
celebrations have calmed,

the United Nations-led
transition force

closes off Gaddafi's
private residences

to preserve the evidence.

- (male reporter) We realised we
were underneath a collapsed palace,

an underground luxury apartment.

NARRATOR: When cameras
were finally allowed

into Gaddafi's inner sanctum,

they revealed the former
Libyan leader's secret life.

- Look what we have got here.

Wow. (pants)

Luxury, pink,
fitted-out bathroom.

And that is some bath.

NARRATOR: Beyond the garish
fittings and kitsch furnishings,

deeper underground
were hidden dungeons

and gynaecological equipment.

The playground of a sexual monster.

For two decades, Gaddafi
had ordered the abduction

and forced imprisonment

of countless young women,
girls, and boys.

- He did horrific things
to women, to children.

Uh, he was very violent.

He actually had a torture chamber

that was hidden away in a basement.

And in this location,
he would torture women.

He would force them to watch
him torture other people.

NARRATOR: The man who called
himself the 'Brotherly Leader'

and 'Guide of the Revolution'
was in fact

spiriting victims to
his hell-hole palace

and inflicting sexual
violence upon them

for weeks, months, even years.

- When we look at the
narratives of sexual deviance,

and Gaddafi 100% fits that profile,

we can see that this
is not something

that just comes out of nowhere.

NARRATOR: What were the
behavioural red flags,

the psychological signs
and signifiers,

that may have alerted
the outside world

to Gaddafi's secret life
of sexual abuse?

What were the
formative experiences,

the nature and nurture,
that would create a man

capable of such callous
and sadistic crimes?

NARRATOR: Muammar Gaddafi
was born in the early 1940s,

on the outskirts of a
rural town called Sirte.

(man on film) Tripoli,
in whose streets

the past mingles with
an uncertain future.

NARRATOR: Libya
was barely a country.

Colonised by Italy in
the early 20th century,

they were under occupation
until the fall of

Mussolini's fascist regime at
the end of World War Two.

- Gaddafi was born
in an anti-Western,

anti-colonial atmosphere.

Libya has been colonised by
Italy for a number of years,

and Gaddafi was born into
that anti-western sentiment.

NARRATOR: Living a nomadic
subsistence existence

herding goats and camels,
Gaddafi is the only son

in a traditional Bedouin family.

Seen here aged ten, Muammar
is very much the favoured child.

Even more so once
he grew into adulthood.

- He was young,
attractive, powerful.

He became rich.

And women flocked around him.

- (yelling)

NARRATOR: Gaddafi listened to
stories of his heroic grandfather,

who was killed by the Italians
when they invaded in 1911.

The seeds of hatred for
the West were sown.

- Muammar Gaddafi was
very much a product

of the Arab world
when he grew up.

And at that stage,
the Arab World

had a massive inferiority complex.

We are just colonies for the West,

for the capitalists, for America,
for the Anglos.

And we are regarded
in a very poor light.

FARIDA: So after the Italians
were ousted in World War Two

from North Africa, Libya
became the first new nation

under the United Nations in 1947.

NARRATOR:
But though the new nation

had driven out their
Italian overlords,

the return to monarchy
must have felt like

a backward step
to the young Gaddafi.

- Gaddafi was born
and grew up in a Libya

that had been part of the Italian
empire, part of a fascist regime.

And this really became a driving
force for the way that Gaddafi

would develop as a person and the
way that his ideals would develop

as he tried to shake off the
shackles of imperialism.

NARRATOR: Nevertheless,
Libya was a nation

emerging from colonial
chaos with optimism.

Education was expensive
and far from accessible

for his humble,
illiterate Bedouin family.

A young Gaddafi was
the first in his family

to receive any formal education.

- So there were two major
driving forces behind Gaddafi.

The first being an
anti-West feeling,

anti-colonialism independence,

and the second was the
creation of an Arab state.

NARRATOR: At primary school,
Gaddafi was already

laying the foundations for his
ambition, making friends

that would be at his side when he
took power two decades later.

- We can say this with some
certainty, he was not a stupid man.

In many ways, he
was quite intelligent.

So you would say, 'Well
he had enough intelligence

to look and say
"Hm, this is over the top

because it is not
getting me anywhere".'

But his own grandiose, manic
sense always overruled that.

NARRATOR: The young
Muammar gave no clues

to the sexual deviance
and proclivities

to which he inclined in later life.

FARIDA: Did the power
corrupt the person

or was the person already corrupt

and had this narcissistic,
out of reality kind of persona?

It could perhaps be both
in the case of Gaddafi

because you do have
reports about his wit attitude,

his smart attitude and so on.

But then you see the kind of
person he carried himself.

He did portray himself as a hero.

And to some extent, he did
believe himself to be the answer

to Libyan's calls and maybe to
their prayers and God's prayers.

- (cheering)

NARRATOR: When, as a
teenager, he witnessed

military officer Gamal Abdel Nasser

overthrow the Egyptian monarchy

in the name of pan-Arab nationalism,
that became his role model.

KAPLAN: And this is what
was really food and drink

to Gaddafi when he was growing up.

One day we will reassemble the Arab
empires and we will take our revenge

for the way we have been treated
because we are the great,

we are the Muslims and we deserve
to really control the world.

NARRATOR: During a
demonstration in October 1961,

an 18-year-old student Gaddafi

was expelled from school
for breaking the windows

of a hotel that sold alcohol.

Later in life, Dictator Gaddafi

indulged his taste for Western
whiskey and cocaine.

But for now, the would-be
revolutionary

was keen to target
Western decadence

as the source of
all the world's evils.

- He was determined to
stand up and say,

the West is corrupt, it's decadent,
you've treated us badly,

I'm going to show you
what a real Arab leader is like.

NARRATOR: It was at the
University of Libya, in Benghazi,

that Muammar Gaddafi determined

he would become
a leader of his people.

Inspired by his hero,
Egypt's General Nasser,

and devouring books
on the French Revolution

and pan-Arab nationalism,

he resolved to plot the overthrow

of the colonially-installed
government of King Idris.

On graduation,
he joined the military.

Gaddafi was laying the
groundwork for a new Libya.

MOGHADDAM: If we go to
the beginning of his life,

he is a sincere,
honest military officer

who is helping his country
become independent

of foreign powers

and trying to help the
people of his country.

- (swinging sixties music)

NARRATOR: In 1966,
he was sent by the army

to England for advanced
signals training.

The contrast of hip, swinging London

to his dusty home of Tripoli could
not have been more stark.

Later, Gaddafi claimed he
was bullied by the British

for wearing traditional dress.

- Sorry, you annoyed me in England

therefore you got me no chance
to, uh, learn English.

NARRATOR: Whatever happened left an
indelible mark on Gaddafi's psyche,

which he later expressed with
anti-English and antisemitic views.

- Well, I think he was a product of

what you would call a tribal
society and tribal values.

So tribal values are you appreciate
loyalty in those close to you

and everybody else is a potential
enemy so you stand up against them.

NARRATOR: One person Gaddafi
did trust, at first, was this woman,

school teacher Fatiha al-Nuri.

They married in 1969.
But it wouldn't last long.

Weeks later, when Gaddafi
was denied a military promotion,

he made his move for power.

On September 1st 1969,

he staged a bloodless coup
with his Free Officers Movement.

King Idris, overseas in Turkey
at the time, was ousted.

And Gaddafi and his fellow officers

formed the Socialist
Libyan Arab Republic.

Gaddafi promoted
himself to colonel

and appointed himself Chairman

of the Revolutionary
Command Council,

alongside twelve
of his closest friends.

- (male reporter) The Colonel loses
few opportunities to be present

at a ceremony that will boast
his regime's achievements.

And waiting to see him, those who
have just moved into their new flats

and were out on their balconies

with a fixed rent of only
50p a week to find.

NARRATOR: The early years of
Gaddafi's presidential reign

promised great hope. Gaddafi
enacted real change for his people.

With foresight, he grasped that oil

was to become the
currency of the world.

Libya was sitting on
huge oil reserves

owned by foreign
commercial entities.

He took them on, called their
bluff at the negotiating table

and nationalised the oil industry.

Libyans finally got to
enjoy the proceeds

of their own country's
natural resources.

- He had some good plans to
revive the Libyan economy,

to use some of the oil
resources to modernise.

KAPLAN: He's running Libya.
He's got more money

than Croesus could ever
have dreamed about,

and he sees himself not
just as an Arab Nationalist

but as THE Arab Nationalist.

He's picking up from Nasser

and then he's going back
way into Arab history.

And of course, the
megalomania is running amok.

NARRATOR: Perhaps it was
the brutal past lessons

learned from his Italian oppressors

or perhaps the Bedouin creed
of not trusting anyone,

Gaddafi quickly purged any
opposition, even those close to him.

His young wife Fatiya learned
the hard way not to defy him.

They divorced after only a year
and she was never seen again.

- He was a humble Bedouin

who moved to absolute power

and became totally corrupt,

and also corrupted his own people.

NARRATOR: Loyal friends who had
paved Gaddafi's path to power

were now being removed one by one.

Many of them disappearing
without any trace.

Any opposition is suppressed.

Over 300 Libyans at a time were
given the death sentence,

many executed by public hanging.

VIGURS: When these men have
convinced those around them

that they are the superior being,

the best person for the job,

and they're surrounded by 'yes' men,
then it becomes very difficult

to say no, and that's when
the tyrant is born.

When people start to
resist, people start to fight back,

that person will not accept that

and this is where the
kind of dictatorship,

the mistreatment of
the people, comes in.

Anyone who resists is going to find
themselves in a lot of trouble.

NARRATOR: Taking a leaf from
Mao Zedong's Little Red Book,

Gaddafi created the Green Book,

Guide To The Libyan Arab Creed.

- He saw himself
almost as a messiah.

He wrote a book which
he believed to be

the answer to the world's problems.

He forced people in schools...
All the kids in schools

had to read his book and
memorise it and were tested on it.

NARRATOR: By the mid-1970s,
Libya was swimming in oil dollars.

With money and power, Gaddafi could
spread his ambitious tentacles,

while in public, he feigned
humility and abstinence.

- (man) You think there's a good
chance that Colonel Gaddafi

can be leader
of a united Arab world?

- I am not searching for role
of leader or president

or empire or something like this.

I am doing my... My duty
towards my... My nation.

NARRATOR: But in some ways,
Gaddafi appeared to be

a genuine progressive.

While the Western world
wrestled with women's lib,

the Green Book speaks of the
emancipation of women,

their freedom and enlightenment.

The President appoints women
as his elite bodyguard.

It's only in hindsight that we
now know his true motives

for surrounding himself
with the opposite sex.

KAPLAN: Gaddafi surrounds himself
with these Amazonian women.

Now, it says something of how he was
influenced by the society he was in

that maybe in the Arab society
that says,

wow, this is really
sexualised imagery.

But in Western society, it's seen
as crude, almost pornographic.

But it also constantly hints at

his own sexual ambiguity
and insecurity.

- (military music)

NARRATOR: In 1981,
Gaddafi opens

one of the world's first
female-only military academies.

He publicly calls for the release

of women imprisoned
across the Arab world.

He labels himself
the "Friend of Women".

But in private, the women
he enlists to protect him

will be trapped in his secret
cell of sexual violence.

- So Gaddafi surrounded himself
with female bodyguards.

From the outset, that
looks quite positive.

You know, employing women,
equal opportunities.

These women were beautiful,
heavily made-up, coiffured.

But there is a darker side to this.

That they were Gaddafi's
effectively sex slaves.

- He called them bodyguards
but they were really sexual slaves

to Gaddafi and his proclivities
towards sexual violence.

But it is particularly interesting

that he chose to
clothe these women

in military-type fashion.

So he had fetishised
the military vibe

and these women
embodied that fetish.

NARRATOR: Away from the cameras,

a truly horrific scenario
was playing out.

In his Tripoli residence he
shared with his second wife,

Safia Farkash, and seven children,

thirty young women, including
girls from the age of 15,

were imprisoned in a secret
basement apartment.

Here, they are coerced to
perform every sex act

their leader can conceive of,

forced to take drugs, submit
themselves to be raped,

even to be urinated on.

And in turn, they were
expected to facilitate

the virgin rape of other
young Libyan girls.

- Gaddafi, any kind of sexual
relationship that he had

really wasn't sex at all because
none of it was consensual.

He was a sexual sadist,
he was a violent person.

His experience with women

could only be categorised as rape.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi had reached
the depth of his depravity

at the height of his power.

But he wanted more, much more.

NARRATOR: Through the 1980s,

Libya's livid leader,
Muammar Gaddafi,

was playing a dangerous,
high-risk game.

- At the height of his power, he
felt that he had the ear of world.

He was bankrolled by
millions of dollars in oil

and he even declared
himself the King of Africa.

MOGHADDAM: For a while,
Gaddafi, because of oil money,

had become highly influential
in parts of Africa.

And he even went as far as to
crown himself as King of Africa.

But again, this was delusional.

Because other African nations
didn't see him that way,

although some of them were very
happy to accept his oil money.

VIGURS: He loved the publicity,
he loved to the attention.

He was a real showman.

FARIDA: So I think
he genuinely believed

that he can be actually
the ruler of Africa.

NARRATOR: He embraces
the pomp and grandeur.

Slowly but surely manifesting
his own cult of personality.

Designing his own uniforms,

replete with the
many medalled jackets,

garish colour-matched ensembles,

intensely dyed hair, rock-star
sunglasses and make-up.

MOGHADDAM: As he got older,

his shows became more
and more extravagant.

And he became more and
more divorced from reality.

He had illusions about
how people loved him

and how women loved him.

And that every woman would be
honoured to sleep with him.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi's
personal bodyguards,

enticed into service by the
promise of career advancement,

receive insufficient training
to hold their own

among their male compatriots.

In fact, they are selected,
taken from their families,

and pressed into service on
the basis of their looks

and their president's
personal desires.

FARIDA: That was part of the
propaganda. To try to show himself

as a brother leader, to show
himself as a supporter

of woman's rights, but deep down,
I don't think he cared so much

about women's rights and about the
women's status in Libya in general.

I think he used that
as a facade or a veneer

to hide his real interests
in exploiting women,

sexually or otherwise.

- It's a little bit like
what the Nazis did.

The Nazis had these beautiful
uniforms that screamed out

S&M designed by Hugo Boss.

And all the marching around
had very hyper-sexualised images.

And that's exactly what Gaddafi did.

What does it say? It wants
to say something about you.

"Look at my manhood."
But it also hints at,

"Boy, am I insecure
beneath it all."

NARRATOR: His victims
were silenced by shame

and they weren't limited
to young girls.

WORTHEN: He even had
a group of young boys

that he would also sexually abuse.

They were known as the Services
Group to service his every need.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi's
bi-sexual predilections

were well known
among his inner circle.

Just as they were to foreign
intelligence services,

both of allies and enemies.

- He was a paedophile. I'm not
sure what he did with men,

but he certainly did it with boys.

And I don't think
there's any better way

of confirming his absolute sexual
insecurity and ambiguity.

- (chanting)

KAPLAN: What you get is the
same mentality of the rapist.

Namely, this is power,
this is violence.

The actual sex act is
almost secondary.

And on top of that,
you get somebody

who we've got good evidence
was sexually tremulous.

He wasn't certain of his sexuality
and what he should be.

And he knew in the Arab world,

no matter what you say in public,

if the knowledge comes out that
you are having sex with boys,

your image is shot.

- In many situations, these boys
were also kidnapped

and taken from their families,
never to be seen again.

Here just to service Gaddafi,
ultimately until they matured

and grew up and became men

and were no longer
of interest to Gaddafi.

This is not something that
just comes out of nowhere.

That his bizarre, sexual,

sadistic, scary interests in sex

were likely something that he had
developed during puberty.

And it was only when he was able
to achieve the power that he did

that he was actually able
to design an entire world

of sexual sadism around him.

NARRATOR: As he flouted his power,

and rumours of his private
corruption and depravity

began to spread, whispers
of dissent grew louder.

Assassination attempts followed.

- (male reporter) In the
centre of town we stopped.

And there, almost strolling
along the main street,

was Colonel Gaddafi. It was
particularly unexpected

since only yesterday there had
been an attempt on his life.

MOGHADDAM: He projected
a certain image

onto the West and he came
to believe that image.

He projected an image of himself

as the champion of
third world nations,

particularly in Africa. And he
came to believe in that image

but he didn't realise
nobody else believed it.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi was
volatile and unpredictable,

and that scared the West.

- (chanting)

- (male reporter) This is the moment
Libya became a pariah state.

On the 17th of April 1984, a group
of anti-Gaddafi protestors

gathered outside the
Libyan embassy in London.

NARRATOR: Shots were fired at the
protestors from inside the embassy.

Eleven were wounded and Police
Constable Yvonne Fletcher,

aged just 25, killed.

Gaddafi, predictably,
denied everything.

- No, no, people there
are, are innocent people.

NARRATOR: In the face
of Western condemnation,

Gaddafi doubled down
as anti-West.

- Reagan is the biggest
terrorist in the world.

NARRATOR: And upped
his anti-Semitic rhetoric.

- Do you think that Libya has
an important role to play

in trying to get a Middle East peace
settlement involving the Israelis?

- There is no possibility for peace

because Israelis or Jews,

they deny there is a...a people
which is Palestinian people.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi
showed a natural affinity

with the global tyrants' club.

Shaking hands, leveraging notoriety
to further inflate his own.

- We know that he was
a very ambitious man,

that he wanted to create
influence around the world.

And he made that through money,
through supporting

terrorist networks, through
supporting armed militias and so on.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi used
his oil dollars to fund

international terror groups,
including the IRA.

TREVOR: Britain would argue that

you support organisations
like the IRA.

- We believe the, the cause
of, uh, of, uh, Ireland

is a just cause and
we support this just cause.

FARIDA: Support for IRA
is just one tactic that he used

to put pressure
on the British government.

This is when he was
trying to portray himself

as an anti-Western leader. This is
when he started his propaganda

and he started his narrative
as an Arab leader

and presenting himself
as the potential

Arab leader for the
rest of the Arab world.

NARRATOR: But eventually,
Gaddafi's terrorist funding

grew too much for
Western governments.

Words and threats to get him to
desist were clearly not enough.

The only deterrent he understood
was direct military aggression.

- The evidence is now conclusive
that the terrorist bombing

of La Belle discotheque
was planned and executed

under the direct orders
of the Libyan regime.

He counted on America to be passive.
He counted wrong.

- (male reporter) Tripoli exploded
with heavy anti-aircraft fire

twice during the day.

A nighttime barrage
the heaviest so far.

The raid on Colonel Gaddafi's
headquarters in Tripoli

have blasted his home and family,
killing an adopted daughter.

NARRATOR: Even with the loss of
family, Gaddafi remained defiant.

TREVOR: Muammar Gaddafi,
how has your country changed

after the American attack?

- We got benefit
from this aggression.

Our people is aware now.

And, uh, all the Arab, uh, nation,

uh, came around us.

And, uh, all the peoples
in the world supported us.

They lose and we, we won.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi
survives the Reagan bombing

at the helm of a rogue state.

But his world is about to
come crashing down.

REAGAN: This Mad Dog
of the Middle East

has a goal of a world revolution.

NARRATOR: Winter, 1988.

Four days before Christmas,

a full Pan Am Flight 103

explodes in midair
over Lockerbie in Scotland.

- (male reporter) On all the
hillsides surrounding Lockerbie,

stretcher parties were at work.

Fireman and rescue services
have spent Christmas Eve

working around the shattered
cockpit of Flight 103,

sifting through the wreckage.

NARRATOR: The crash site
is declared a crime scene.

259 victims murdered
by an act of terror.

Less than a year later,
a French passenger airliner

is downed in central West Africa.

170 people dead,

including the wife of
an American ambassador.

Intelligence links both
bombings to Libya.

The international community
imposes trade embargos.

Gaddafi is under pressure.

- (male reporter) At the UN,
ambassadors are hopeful

these limited sanctions will be
enough to persuade Libya

to hand over the
two Lockerbie suspects

and renounce support for terrorism.

- When it became clear that Gaddafi
was little more than a mob leader,

funding terrorism, especially in the
wake of the Lockerbie disaster,

when sanctions were
brought against Libya,

affecting the people that he
was supposed to be leading,

supposed to be helping, things
started to unravel for him.

His popularity started to wane.

NARRATOR: While his people suffer
with the mounting sanctions,

Gaddafi shoots family
vacation videos.

What his camera doesn't show

is his pathological
addiction to sex,

requiring a supply of four or
five young victims per day.

FARIDA: And then you started
hearing stories, horrible stories,

about his exploitation
of women, boys.

Using sex or using rape

as a weapon by himself or the
people that work with him.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi
even began to use sex

as an internal political weapon,

a way of shoring up
his personal power base.

WORTHEN: For Gaddafi,
his ultimate sexual prize,

the conquest that he
was most proud of,

were the wives and daughters
of his comrades, of his peers.

It was so exciting to him that
he could dominate women

from his own circle
while also dominating women

that he really shouldn't
have access to.

But because he was
so violent and powerful,

he was even able to do that.

- (crowd screams)

NARRATOR: As the
shocking live images of 9/11

seared the world's retinas,

Gaddafi saw
the writing on the wall.

The global war on terror
escalated overnight,

and the Libyan dictator chose
this moment to change sides.

- In the wake of 9/11,
when it was clear

that there was going to be
a global war on terror,

Gaddafi tried to realign himself.

And this time to align
himself with the West.

- So he wanted to then protect
himself and protect his ruling

by trying to siding with the
West and the US once again,

by saying that Libya will disarm
its weapons of mass destruction.

It's willing to take admission

and to take responsibility of the
Lockerbie attack in Scotland

and then to pay
compensation for that.

NARRATOR: Now, after
30 years in power,

and having utterly
transformed himself

from the anti-Western
pan-Arab Nationalist Leader

he had once positioned himself as,

he was now willing to turn himself
into a creature of the West

if it would help him stay in power.

- (male reporter) Tony Blair
met Libya's Colonel Gaddafi,

re-opening trade links
between the two countries.

Who would have believed it?
Libya and Britain,

Gaddafi and Blair, shoulder to
shoulder in the war on terror.

- But it was too late.

He'd effectively
burnt all of his bridges.

Nobody was going to support him.

And effectively, he just
started to run out of friends.

NARRATOR: In his final years in
power, Gaddafi's paranoia grew,

as did his vanity and
his sexual depravity.

MOGHADDAM: He had to
force himself on women

because he was no longer attractive.

He was no longer young.

So his sexual deviations
became greater and greater.

NARRATOR: Gaddafi flew a
cosmetic surgeon from Brazil

to give him a face lift.

FARIDA: He refused to be
under the anaesthetic

because, you know, he didn't
want to be unconscious.

And he suffered through the whole
operation being fully conscious.

And that shows you
the level of trust he has

of the loyalty of
people around him.

He thought they would kill him
when he was unconscious.

NARRATOR: And as shadows grew
longer over his dictatorial rule,

his depravity grew ever darker.

WORTHEN: Gaddafi had
bizarre sexual practices.

He did horrific things to women.

He actually had a torture chamber

that was hidden away
in a basement.

And in this location,
he would torture women.

He would force them to watch
him torture other people.

NARRATOR: The sexual
violence was unthinkable.

He even had a team of nurses on
call to treat bite marks, fractures,

and internal injuries
suffered by his victims,

to try and keep a lid on
his appalling crimes.

- He gave no value at all
to other people's lives.

He didn't have any
empathy for them.

NARRATOR: The tyrant
was out of control.

- (gunfire)

NARRATOR: In 2010,
popular uprisings

began erupting across the
Middle East and North Africa.

Dubbed the Arab Spring,
Gaddafi would not be spared.

- (female reporter) Colonel Gaddafi
is your army deserting you?

Is your army deserting you,
do you believe?

NARRATOR: Ironically,
it was Arab Nationalism

that brought him to power

and the same forces
that brought him down.

NARRATOR:
With defeat inevitable,

he tries desperately to
reinvent himself once more

as a firebrand Arab revolutionary.

NARRATOR: An audience
encouraged to attend

by Gaddafi's remaining
loyalists in the military.

- What made Gaddafi distinctive
was that he started off

as an Arab Nationalist, and this
wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Arabs needed good leaders who
would look after their people.

But in the end, his megalomania
overcame him.

He got caught up by this idea
of taking on the whole world

rather than sticking
to his own patch.

and this led to his destruction.

He's just another dictator
who took it too far

and got his just desserts.

NARRATOR: For his victims,

his downfall and death
in October 2011

released a complex
raft of emotions.

Fear, the chaotic savagery
on their screens,

a violence they were subjected to
daily, would spread and find them.

- (yelling and gunfire)

NARRATOR: Impotent rage

their persecutor would escape
trial for his heinous crimes.

Above all, there was a shared
sense of just vengeance.

Because before the
crush of the crowd,

before the brutal beating...

..before the bullets,

..there was footage shared
among the victims

of Gaddafi's secret life
of sexual abuse,

footage of the moment
their 'Brotherly Leader'

was violently penetrated
by a bayonet,

the moment their
rapist was raped.

- There is a gruesome irony
to his ultimate end

in which his people overthrew him
in a very violent and brutal way.

He was sodomised with a bayonet.

An ultimate way to show deference

and to procure his own
power away from him

by treating him as a sex object

in a very violent and brutal way.

- (yelling and gunfire)

- Today, we are told
that Gaddafi is dead.

Today, Libya, Libya's future begins.

Gaddafi's black era

has come to an end forever.

- We've seen reports about
women who were found

just by the side of the road,
raped and just dead.

These could be some of
his victims but we don't know.

- Gaddafi seized power in
order to overthrow tyranny,

but he ended up
becoming a tyrant himself.

MOGHADDAM:
He projected an image

as the champion of third world
nations, particularly in Africa.

And he came to
believe in that image.

But he didn't realise
nobody else believed it.

- If ever there was a leader
who had pride before the fall,

it was Gaddafi.
