#####
We will record all of this so as to avoid any confusion.
When did you join the Bosque congregation?
In 1983.
I was seventeen.
At that time Father Fernando, was on everyone’s lips.
People said that he was a saint.
I was curious and went to meet him.
- Hi. - Hi.
Father.
Father, it’s almost midday.
Father.
I’m exhausted, my son.
The devil kept me up all night.
- Hi. - Hi.
Father.
It’s our duty to work.
The church is nearly full, Little Saint.
We should film this mass, my son. Did you bring the camera?
Yes Father, it’s ready.
- There we go. - Here’s the sermon, Father.
Give me my glasses.
No, I think I’ll improvise today, my son.
I’ll leave myself in the hands of the Virgin.
May She help me find the right words to improvise.
- Come on, quickly, my jacket. - Let’s go.
Who are you?
I’m looking for Father Fernando.
Now?
Yes, I was told he could receive me today.
Impossible, we’re about to start mass.
- Come on, boys. - Later?
All rise, dear brothers.
In the name of the Father, the son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Wait a minute.
There.
Let’s start again.
Only the wealthiest and connected families came to mass here.
The prettiest girls in Santiago went at eight.
Everyone wanted to be a part of this wonderful place.
They called him Little Saint...
or The King.
The Body of Christ.
The Body of Christ.
The Body of Christ.
Do you know that boy?
The Body of Christ.
Tomás Leyton?
Yes.
Hi, nice to meet you.
Hi.
Eduardo Márquez.
Are you waiting for the Father?
Yes.
Father apologises, he can’t see you today.
But you can come to the 7 p.m. lecture on Wednesday.
He said you’re not to disappoint him,
he very much wants you to come.
- He said that? - Yes.
But he doesn’t even know me.
He does, he only needs to see you once.
He sends you this.
Before you leave,
I’d like to make an announcement, news that fill us with joy.
Today God has signalled me that two of our youngsters
will begin the path to priesthood.
I’d like to present Juan Pablo Palacios and Andrés Eguiguren.
This is a beautiful present from our parish El Bosque
for the great Chilean Catholic family.
From the first moment I saw him...
I was seized by the voice and charisma of The Father.
Hello my dear.
Hi mom.
Aren’t you going out?
What time is it?
Ten p.m.
Change the channel please, darling.
It's a nationwide broadcast.
-Mom... -What?
I had an incredible experience today.
I can’t explain it.
I felt so close to God.
It’s strange, I felt like He were giving me a sign.
You’re scaring me.
Tell me what happened.
Why are you talking about such strange things?
It’s nothing.
The thing is that I went to mass.
At the El Bosque Parish.
-With... -Father Karadima.
Yes.
I've heard he’s good.
Charismatic.
It looks like this is serious.
He’s here.
Finally he shows up!
What a horrid car.
Tell him I’m not here,
that I went to bed.
No, that I went out half an hour ago,
I couldn’t wait any longer.
Hi.
Yes.
No, she went out.
About half an hour ago.
She said she couldn’t wait.
Ok, thanks. Please tell her I'm sorry.
Ok, has he gone?
You’re an angel, my darling.
Thank you.
My sun, my prince, good night.
Good night.
At church I felt like I could recover
some of the childhood I had lost due to my family's history.
It's odd that El Bosque means The Forest.
Forests are peaceful.
They’re inspirational, magical.
But they also hold secrets.
Dark and terrifying.
In order to be part of our parish,
we welcome all the Little Shoes,
who are those that are starting to feel the call.
Because that’s what the vocation feels like.
Like a little shoe that rubs against you.
Let’s get to work.
Let’s read St. Peter’s first letter.
He tells us:
You, the young, humble yourselves before the powerful hand of God.
Be frugal and always alert,
because your enemy, the Devil, is always near.
Where is the first place we should look for the Devil?
He’s a lot closer than we think.
Where is he? Where should we look for him?
In...
Yes?
Within ourselves?
Very good.
Within ourselves.
Very good. What did you say your name was?
Tomás Leyton, sir.
Very good, Tomás.
I’ll be waiting for you in the library at the end of the class.
Let's pray.
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Do you mind if I smoke?
Father!
Forgive me.
I’m sorry, you startled me.
You may not always see me, but I’m always there.
I wanted to thank you...
for the medal.
Well...
I like it a lot.
I liked your answer a lot.
So I have to thank you too.
You seem to have a real gift, my son.
Would you like to join our congregation?
I’d like to but
to be honest,
I don’t feel my "shoe rubbing", like you said.
Maybe that means that I don’t have the calling.
But how can you know, my son?
You need to start church work,
learn discipline, serve The Church, and only then
will you know whether you’re worthy of hearing the voice of God.
What if the call doesn’t come?
If it doesn’t come, it doesn’t come, my son.
You still haven’t said
whether you want to join our congregation?
Yes, Father.
Then you’ll never leave here.
Dinner is served, Father.
Coming.
Father suggested, insisted actually,
that I choose him as my spiritual guide.
That would be the way he could get to know me
and understand my priestly vocation.
He explained the role of a spiritual guide.
A faithful friend who guides us on the path to priesthood.
He had the gift...
and knew your truth better than anyone.
What was good for you.
You are to respect him, my personal secretary.
Did you hear Sylvia? Did you all hear?
That year I started college with doubt in my heart.
There was my career, but there was also my desire for priesthood.
I had many questions...
and I thought the church could help me,
could restore my faith in the company of real brothers.
... I do not know about that...
The truth is Father,
I’m thrilled how you recruit so many young men,
specially in these difficult times.
Soon I was taking part in mass
and lectures on a daily basis.
That's how I became part of El Bosque.
I joined unconditionally.
My darling.
What’s wrong?
Tomi.
Let’s talk about your mother again.
What sort of a relationship did you have with her?
Did she have stable relationships?
How did she relate with the church?
Father...
Terrible things happened in my family.
My father...
My father killed a man.
It was a while ago.
A boyfriend that my mother had.
Father, forgive me
I know I should have told you this before, but...
Calm down.
I know your story, Tomás Leyton.
Don’t ask me for forgiveness.
From the moment you arrived I knew exactly who you were.
I don’t judge you
or your father, how could I?
He did something terrible, that hurt your family.
But you’ll find forgiveness within yourself.
Here.
In that little heart, okay?
Sometimes I think that,
that the devil could take me over as well.
That I’m capable of evil.
Last night
I argued with my mother
and for a moment I saw myself just as he was.
I’m alone, Father.
No.
I’m here.
Calm down.
You’ll never be alone again.
I feel so lonely.
I’m alone because
she never really looked after me.
She hasn't been a good mother to me.
You’ll never be alone again.
Never again.
This is your home now.
Today, tomorrow, whenever you want to come,
I’ll always have time for you.
Thank you, Father.
My sweet little son.
You don’t have to thank me.
You’ve got such a lovely smile.
Right.
I absolve you of all your sins,
in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Right.
Up you get.
And don't be touching yourself.
Keep your willy inside, alright?
I forgot to tell you, my son,
this Saturday we’re going to the Ariztia family house in Zapallar.
Thank you.
Sweet boy.
That confession was a before and an after,
giving him power over me from which I could never again escape.
Until then I’d only ever really confessed to masturbation.
This had become a habit for me, a way to escape from reality.
I did it all the time, and the faster I could orgasm, the better.
I never imagined what a serious impact this habit would have on my love life.
Father Hurtado said to me on his death bed:
Fernando, you can see
when a young man hears the call,
as we say in parish, "has little shoes".
You boys are so fortunate to have this man as an example.
Dad, can I leave the table? Excuse me.
Let me tell you that your niece seems ready.
Oh Father, you remembered.
How could I forget? I think about it all the time.
Blessed saint.
It’s her life.
Tomi.
Come over here.
Sit down and chat with us.
Sit down, don’t be shy.
Father told me you’re studying medicine.
A priest and a doctor, just like Eduardo.
Here you go.
Thank you.
To be honest, I’m still unsure about my calling.
But Father Fernando, has been an inspiration to me.
Do you know how to drive, my son?
Yes, but I haven’t got a licence.
Since when have you needed a licence to drive, I say.
Give Tomi the keys, he’ll drive.
Here.
Thanks.
You boys go in that car.
No racing, go easy.
Yes Father, don’t worry.
Right.
After you.
Do you know how to pee with your head backwards?
Sure.
No hands, no hands.
That’s it.
Right.
By God this place is beautiful.
I love the sea.
You know how old I was when I first saw the sea?
Twenty one. Old right?
How I missed out on this beauty.
Do you really think I could be a priest one day?
What a question.
Are you asking whether your little shoes is rubbing?
If that’s your question, then the answer is: I don’t know.
This is a long journey, Tomás.
A very long journey, my son.
It demands patience, perseverance.
You have to wear out your ears listening for God’s call.
It’s a journey that also demands real sacrifice.
The biggest sacrifice is to control your body’s desires.
You think I didn’t see your face when you reappeared in the Ariztia’s house?
Do you think I was born yesterday?
That I don’t know that you were with that girl?
Tell me, what happened?
Father.
What?
Well, if you don’t want to tell me what happened, that’s fine,
but then I can’t help you.
I couldn't help it.
I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
But you’re just a boy.
So tell me.
Tell me what happened.
Father.
Calm down, tell me.
Yes, yes.
It’s okay.
Calm down.
Father.
Forgive me.
Do up your zipper.
Let’s switch places, I’ll drive.
Here we are.
You get out and talk to the priest.
Don’t go into details,
just tell him you committed an impure act.
That's all.
He’ll understand, and you’ll be absolved.
Off you go.
Talk to me.
It's something terrible.
Here’s my son.
Hello, darling.
He’s studying medicine.
At that moment I thought he was testing me.
Testing my obedience and my level-headedness.
Teaching me a lesson or that it had been a mistake, I don’t know.
An accident.
I couldn’t find a reason that made any sense.
It’s just for a few days. I need to think,
to clear my head.
Forgive me, Amparito.
Forgive me.
I...
I can’t do anything right now.
We have to do something.
People have to know what’s going on there.
Who can I tell?
Who’s going to believe me?
Hello Father Fernando.
Yes.
No.
Father Fernando.
Hello Father, please never ring us again.
I met Amparo at University.
She awoke passion in me,
feelings of desire that had lain dormant for so long.
Always associated with guilt.
Our relationship became increasingly more intense.
It helped reaffirm my masculinity that I couldn't help but question.
I never told Amparo about the Congregation.
You?
At this time of night?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Don’t you feel a weakness sometimes?
Tomi, don’t lecture me.
Where were you?
I went out with a chick.
You went out with a woman.
Yeah.
And what happened?
Not much.
Not much?
Tell me!
We kissed and
it was like I forgot about the world, really.
Didn’t you say that you were going to your mother’s?
Yes.
That’s wrong, Tomi.
You know what The Saint is like.
He gets all cross.
Yes, I know.
Don’t tell anyone, right?
Calm down, you can trust me.
Put that out and go to bed.
We have to be up early tomorrow.
The Saint was concerned.
I said that you are studying.
How long did you hide your relationship
from Father Fernando?
For about six months.
The thing is...
These things happen.
What things happen, Tomi?
The meetings in the Dean’s room were called Brotherly Corrections.
We were terrified of being summoned to one.
When were you going to tell us that you were seeing someone?
Apparently you had the vocation to be a priest,
or what else are you doing here?
I still do.
I’m just a bit confused.
I can understand your confusion,
but it’s the lying that breaks my heart.
We’ve given you everything
and this is how you repay us.
You betrayed our trust.
The worst is that you made one of us lie for you.
You’re going to have to leave, Tomás.
I’m sorry?
Forgive me, but
this is my home.
You’re like my family.
Please.
Father.
Tomi.
Are you alright?
We’d arranged to meet.
I’m sorry.
I just forgot.
You were praying.
I didn’t know you prayed.
So, then ...
despite the fact you were an adult,
you were in love,
and that you doubted your vocation,
you decided to stay with Father Karadima
and break it off with Amparo.
Yes, that’s what I did.
What explanation do you have for that today?
It’s one thing to receive an order
but obeying it is a different matter.
Especially for a young man in love.
I was nobody. I didn’t have my own will.
The Father never took my freedom,
he just made sure that I gave it to him bit by bit.
Maybe your love for Amparo wasn’t strong enough
and your heart was elsewhere.
Are you saying that I was in love with the Father?
No.
I was thinking of your love for the church.
Mom?
Yes dear?
Could you help me pay the university fees?
Don’t you have a scholarship from the Father?
So?
Father.
I need to talk to you.
Do you think we have anything to talk about, Tomi?
Leave the door open.
Isn’t this music beautiful?
It kills me.
It kills me, it transports me.
I’ve always tried to imagine the landscape this song describes.
A palm grove.
Something calm.
What happened, Tomi?
I want you to look me in the eyes
and see that I’m the same Tomi that I was before.
I’m happy here.
I know.
I need to be here, to be near you.
My lovely boy.
Forgive me.
You’ve no idea how much I love you.
Thank you, Father.
Tell that girl to come and see me.
This is one of my favourite places.
It’s lovely.
So peaceful.
Thank you.
His strength is infinite, isn’t it?
It always finds us.
And the good news is...
that even if we’ve strayed,
his patience is infinite.
How are you, my son?
Hello, Father.
Father, it’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m Amparo Tocornal.
I know exactly who you are, my girl.
You’ve come to steal our Tomi.
Please, Father.
I’m talking to Miss Tocornal.
Her name is Amparo.
I’m talking to Amparo and will continue to do so.
Father.
Go on.
Go pray, you need it.
Did you know, my girl,
that our Tomás,
was thinking of becoming a priest?
No.
I see there are things he doesn’t tell you.
It’s understandable.
It’s a difficult thing to share.
It takes confidence in the person who’s at your side.
I wouldn’t want to interfere with his Call.
Funny you should say that because you already did.
Then I’ll be your spiritual guide.
Alright?
Yes Father.
As long as Tomi agrees.
That doesn’t matter.
Whether he agrees or not is for me to say.
If I see it black, it’s black
even if you see it white.
Yes Father.
Tomás, my son.
We’re done here.
And since I’m not easily fooled,
and have the Virgin of Carmen as my patron saint,
no touching or kissing.
How can you think that, Father?
Of course, you need to control yourself. She’s a pretty girl.
I’ll take you then.
How are you going to take her?
How are you going to take her?
In the car.
Have you got money for gas?
Yes.
I'll give you some.
You don't want to run out of gas, that'd be foolish.
Take care.
Thank you, Father.
Give me a kiss.
Goodbye, Father.
Thank you.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Excuse me.
Come in.
Amparo.
Father.
Hello doctor. It’s been a while.
Father Aguirre. I didn’t know you were the Devil’s Advocate.
This is a small community, doctor.
It’s hard to find someone you don’t know.
I doubt they made much effort either.
I’m sure that the Father can listen without bias.
That’s his job, my love.
I’m sorry Father, it’s been a difficult week.
Everyone has turned their backs on us.
One moment.
Come in.
Father.
How nice to see you.
I wonder if Thomás
is thinking what this defamation could lead to.
Tomás isn’t lying, Father.
I’m not saying he is.
I insist... Tomás must be confused.
OK.
Let’s see.
Tomás isn’t doing well.
He’s seeing a psychologist.
For a long time now.
You’re saying that Tomás isn’t lying, right?
So I musn’t lie to you either.
You two are going through a profound marital crisis.
But it’s not fair to blame Father Karadima.
He’s very worried about you both.
Amparo, accusations like this can hurt innocent people.
I mean Father Karadima and all the priests around him.
Not only them, this could hurt your family as well.
Your children, Amparo.
I understand that you’re worried.
But come closer to the Lord.
Clear your doubts.
And what you’ve said is bound by the secrets of confession.
Go in peace.
So let’s start with you, Doctor.
Please.
Have a seat.
Let’s talk about your relationship with Amparo again.
What happened after you had the Father’s blessing?
Hail Mary.
Conceived without sin.
I’m listening.
It’s about Amparo.
Amparo and I.
Have you had bad thoughts?
Not only that.
I've sinned and those sins have made me
doubt my calling to priesthood.
Like what you used to do when you were a young boy,
at night, remember?
Yes, I remember.
Amparo and I slept together.
Did you consummate with Amparo?
No.
We just touched each other.
What do you mean?
Intimately.
Was she naked?
Almost.
- What do you mean almost? - In her underwear.
Has it always been like that?
Until last night, when I took off all my clothes.
How many times has this happened?
Four times.
So you and your girlfriend have been feeling each other up.
Yes, but
only the top.
And down there?
I couldn’t.
You couldn’t? Or you didn’t want to?
I couldn’t.
Did she touch you?
Did you let her touch you?
Yes, I did.
And did you ejaculate?
Did you ejaculate?
Did you enjoy it?
Of course you did.
Is that all?
Yes, that’s all.
You’ve failed, Tomi.
You failed and you went back on a promise.
You can’t be a priest, my son.
What?
You’re not ready for the path to priesthood.
You prefer women to priesthood.
This is not your path.
And that will be your punishment.
All this because I doubted?
Hey.
Because you got carried away?
Gave in to temptation?
Is Amparo the personification of Evil? Do you think she’s that powerful?
What will I do?
Marry Amparo, my son.
What?
Exactly what I said. Marry her.
I absolve you, in the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
What will I say to Amparo?
You’ll find a way.
But don’t tell her now. Wait until after the trip.
What trip?
A surprise I’ve got for you.
A nice trip to Rome for the two of us.
To Rome?
About the trip to Rome...
Was it normal for the Father to invite young men to go?
Yes, of course.
Every year he chose a different destination.
To go with him was the best prize. It’s what we all wanted.
Where did he get the money to finance these trips?
From the Parish.
El Bosque was a great business.
They rented out flats and houses almost like a real estate agent.
Monsignor’s family lived in houses that belonged to the parish.
Mrs. Eloisa, the Father’s mother and some of his brothers,
not only lived there but the Father also
covered all their expenses.
Quite luxuriously to say the least.
It always struck me how the church’s buildings
were used to house the Father’s family.
Mother, this is Tomás Leyton,
my new personal secretary.
Nice to meet you, my son.
Likewise.
I brought you a present.
Thank you. Please have a seat, we’re having tea.
Yes.
Over there.
This is delicious, Mother.
Please don’t eat all the biscuits.
These ones are light.
It’s for your own good. You’re too fat.
Oh Mother.
Did you know that this man...
I’m sorry, what was your name?
Tomás, ma’am.
Tomás what?
Tomás Leyton.
I get the names mixed up,
he looks a lot like Eduardo when he first arrived.
You noticed?
What was I saying?
How is this thing going with the niece of Ariztia?
The annulment?
Well... slow, mom.
Because it seems that the girl...
You have to help the Ariztia family.
They’re decent people, Catholic, generous...
If they requested an annulment for her it’s because she deserves one.
I do what I can, Mom.
Oh, come on!
I’m just a priest mother.
Modest, modest, always so modest.
He should be a bishop. No, Archbishop!
He’s well respected at the Vatican, do you know why?
Because thanks to him
the Catholic church isn’t full of communist priests!
And his congregation is a mine of great little priests.
And the Vatican knows it.
Did you accept the invitation to Rome, doctor?
Yes.
Yes, even though the abuse would likely continue during the trip?
- Isn’t it beautiful? - It’s beautiful, Father.
By God, I love that city.
I’d go back a thousand times.
How wonderful.
- Lovely, isn’t it? - Yes
I’m getting tired, off you go,
I need to prepare for tomorrow.
You can stay and help me, Eduardo.
You're off?
Yes, thank you Father.
Are you going with her, Tomás?
Yes, I have to go.
Go with your girlfriend.
You must have things to talk about.
I forgot my backpack.
Excuse me.
Thank you.
I think I just messed up.
Why?
The Father and Eduardo got nervous when I went in.
Why would they be nervous?
What happened after the trip to Rome?
Amparo, take this ring as a sign of my love.
I was supposedly doing what God wanted.
But it felt like the consolation prize for not having become a priest.
During the baptism sermon,
I tried to forget everything that had happened,
and to look forward to the future with hope.
But I couldn’t, I felt I failed.
I felt I had failed.
That after all...
I was an ordinary man
that would lead an ordinary life
far, so far from that spiritual life that I wanted to feel.
I remembered the Gospel that Father always told us,
about a man who at the end of his life,
as a grandfather,
confessed the torment of having received the calling,
and not having responded likewise.
It was horrible to feel identified with that story.
Why did you let him be
the spiritual guide to your wife and son?
I don’t know how to answer that question.
The Father was the most important person in my life.
Everything between Amparo and I
passed by our confessor and spiritual guide.
Our holidays,
house repairs,
where we lived
who we got together with...
what birthday parties we went to...
We asked The Saint everything.
We weren't like a couple.
We were his puppets.
We kept no secrets from the Father, but we did with from each other,
So we couldn’t establish any complicity as a couple.
And sexually I just,
I just tried to please her by touching without penetration,
until she had an orgasm.
Because I couldn’t last even a minute,
and I didn’t want to be a bad lover.
We started getting tangled up,
distancing.
I felt so alone.
In a house, with a good wife, beautiful kids,
but it didn't feel like my home, I didn’t belong there.
Elbows off the table.
Let him put his elbows on the table if he’s comfortable.
Hallelujah.
So the Virgin listened to my prayers today.
-Hi dad. -Hello.
We thought you weren’t coming.
We were bored of waiting at home so we thought we’d find you here.
You’ll never find him here.
If it weren’t for you Amparito who brings me the children,
I’d never even see my godson.
He's more handsome every day.
Hello Eduardo.
Don't be upset, I’ve got so much work at the hospital.
Forgive me.
We got takeout chicken.
Yummy.
But I’ve eaten.
I just came to see how the Father was.
You can see how I am.
I’m old, I'm sick ... and alone.
He complains about his colon all day.
He eats too much.
Don’t be cheeky, Beto.
No, let him, a godson can say what he likes.
Look Dad, Father gave me a holy medal.
Shall we go, kids?
Finish up and let’s go.
Can I go on the motorbike?
-Yes. -Don’t even mention that bike.
How can a forty year old man still ride a motorbike?
Children should not go on motorbikes.
Tomás examine the Father, he doesn’t believe me.
Your tea, Father.
I don’t want any tea.
- Father... - No!
Tomi the kids.
The kids.
What would it hurt to examine him?
Look at him.
I’ll take him to the hospital tomorrow.
You’ll take him tomorrow?
I’ll take him to the hospital tomorrow, alright?
Kids, finish your meal.
Finish up now.
Thank you, Tomás.
Elbows off the table.
Father forgive me.
I’m confused, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
You’re stressed, that’s all.
You’re doing too much.
Don’t demand so much from yourself.
You’ve done nothing wrong.
You’re a good father.
I haven't been a good father.
Yes.
Your children love you.
Your wife loves you.
God loves you.
Our Holy Mother loves you as well.
They all love you.
I can’t go on.
I love you.
Calm down, everything will be alright.
And how?
How did you manage to escape
this circle, or prison you were trapped in?
I have to go in, so wait here for you Mom, okay?
Yes.
You can play in the garden, but careful, ok?
Okey.
Bye, Father.
Bye Alberto. It was nice to see you.
Wait for your mother here.
It’s a woman’s obligation to support her husband in marriage.
But you instead...
you complain.
I’m not complaining, Father, I’m worried.
What about?
About his behaviour.
He’s so distracted.
Distant.
I think ... he might have another woman.
How dare you think that?
He’s tired.
All Tomás does is work,
so that you can be comfortable, so your needs are covered.
So your children are taken care of.
And how do you repay him?
Complaints, accusations, mistrust.
You’re right, Father, forgive me.
I absolve you of all your sins,
in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Cover up,
that’s very low cut.
...blessed are you among women and blessed be the fruit
of your womb. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners...
Hello.
Hello.
I thought you weren’t coming.
I spoke to the Father, he said he hadn’t seen you.
Did you come for confession?
Yes.
Alone?
No, with Alberto.
Where is he?
I don’t know. He was playing around there.
Beto.
What is it?
Beto!
What’s wrong, Tomi?
Wait in the car.
Tomi.
Why did you come up here without permission, Beto?
- But Dad. - No buts!
Give me that.
I’m sorry.
I got a fright.
Let’s go.
We’re like a family here.
Tomi.
Tomi.
Hey, my son.
The Devil’s got into him.
Tomi, please!
Please, Beto is here.
Hail Mary, mother of God.
Blessed are you among women and blessed...
Confidential.
Tomi.
I want you to come back home.
It’s been long enough.
It’s not good for the children.
You don’t see it, do you?
While you were talking to Father Aguirre
you didn’t see how
he has been interfering in our lives?
Nothing is real.
And the children?
Father Aguirre, it’s been a while.
Why didn’t you call? I’d have gone to the office.
Hello, Doctor.
Can we have a minute? It’s private.
Yes, of course.
First, I need you to know
that what I am doing is completely irregular.
What I’m saying is that I was never here, okay? Is that clear?
Yes, don’t worry.
I heard of an important Vatican representative that came to visit
It seems that what happened at El Bosque
has escaped the realms of the Chilean church.
My dear Fernando,
what matters now are the sheep, not the shepherd.
Do you realise that if you abandon me,
if you let me fall,
I won’t fall alone?
If I go down, the entire Chilean church goes with me.
We won’t abandon you, Father.
And we don’t want you to go down.
So to protect you we’ll get you out of the line of fire.
The Archbishop thinks that if I burn he’ll save himself?
Well he’s mistaken.
Alright, the report has been examined,
but the Archbishop...
has put it on hold.
Officially the investigation is still open,
but it’s likely that nothing will come of it, doctor. Nothing.
Do you know these people?
Some, others only by name.
They’re all from El Bosque, why?
They all sent the Archbishop complaints about Father Fernando.
It would be good if you could talk to them, doctor.
There is nothing more that I can do.
Thank you.
This is the album you gave me.
It was for my birthday, wasn’t it?
No.
It was for Christmas.
Of course.
So then it must have been
for that Christmas after our trip to Rome.
I was waiting for you, my son.
I didn’t tell you that I was coming.
You and I are connected, Tomás.
I know everything that happens to you.
Father.
Do you remember this photo?
At the Sistine Chapel.
You were complaining that you had to strain your neck to see the ceiling.
Do you know where I'd like to go?
I’d like to go to Egypt.
Would you like to go?
Sit down next to me, my son.
These are our beautiful memories, Tomi.
But I want you to have them.
I’m going to denounce you.
I’m going to make it public.
I’m going to talk, and others will too.
God so loved the world that He gave His son for it,
so that all who would believe in Him
would no longer be lost, but would find peace in eternal life.
I thought it fair that I should tell you.
Saint John, Chapter 3, verse 16.
Why you, my son?
Why you?
Why?
You are my true joy.
I’m busy, can’t you see?
I’m sorry.
Before we begin, I need you to give your consent on camera.
Your full name and your permission to broadcast this interview.
My name is Tomás Leyton
and I give this interview of my own free will.
I allow the TV channel to broadcast my story in its programme.
In April of 2010, five professionals described on television the sexual and
psychological abuse they suffered from Father Karadima.
Chilean civil justice dismissed
the case against the priest because more than
ten years had passed since the events.
The ecclesiastical court found Father Karadima
guilty of abuse against minors.
Karadima currently lives in a convent in Santiago, as the Vatican did not
strip him of his title as priest.
James Hamilton, José Andrés Murillo
and Juan Carlos Cruz,
with their familie’s support,
faced the oldest and most powerful institution in the world.
In 2013 they sued the Catholic Church for obstruction of justice.
Today, victims of Karadima continue to fight for their rights.
