She's worse than usual, Doctor.

Scared me half out of my wits.

Now don't ask me where she got those bottles.

I can't watch her 24 hours a day, Doctor.

Let me tell you, Miss Genavieve is a lot to handle.

She hasn't drawn one sober breath since your last visit.

When did she eat last?

Two days ago.

I've had better jobs than this, let me tell you.

Is he still advertising for that Johnny Yuma?

He's put advertisements in the papers of 10 states.

Even says it's a matter of life and death.

It is.

Johnny, Johnny!

Johnny!

Johnny!

Ah, Johnny!

Let's hope that brings her out of it.

She must be seeing demons again.

The war's been over two years.

Why does she go on punishing herself?

Search behind those trees.

Did you men search that are over by the creek?

Nothin' over here, Captain.

Summon your men up here, on the double.

Surround the house.

Don't let anyone pass.

Genavieve, it's me.

Oh, Johnny.

Well, how'd you get here?

I escaped a few miles from here.

I didn't think your house would still be standin'.

I just took a chance.

Well they'll follow you, they'll find you.

They're too close for comfort right now.

They're beat in the bushes the other side of the lot.

I'll need a horse and some food.

If you expect a husband when this war's over,

you better get a move on.

Johnny!

Johnny, don't go out there.

This house is staff headquarters,

it's just swarmin' with Union officers.

You men guard the main entrance.

What are you gonna do?

I gotta hide in the smokehouse.

He ran toward the house!

Careful, he's got a bayonet.

He slugged the Lieutenant.

All right, spread out boys.

By the bushes, after 'em!

They're all over the place.

Keep them from comin' in this room.

A rebel escaped from a prison wagon.

We're searching all the rooms.

Well surely you don't think I'm harboring him,

do you Colonel?

No, he's not armed, but he's probably very desperate,

so let's not take any chances hm?

Why well that's ridiculous.

I'm sorry Miss Genavieve, but we must search the house.

- Colonel. - Hm?

Do they all have to come in here?

I'll search these rooms.

Jeff.

I had a surprise all planned for you

and now you're gonna spoil it.

Here I'd taken out my prettiest ball gown,

one I hadn't worn since before the war

and I was gonna let you take me into town

and show me off like you always wanted to do.

And now you'll see it before

I get a chance to make my entrance.

And if you do that, Jeff, honey,

I'm just not gonna wear it, that's all.

You silly child.

You beautiful, silly child.

Well you go ahead.

Go ahead, find yourself a rebel.

Be sure to look under the bed though.

That's where I hide all my soldier boys.

Maybe I better look for you.

Nope.

Now you just march on outa here, Colonel.

Hurry and change, darling.

I'll be waiting.

So that's why your plantation

is standing and everything else is rubble.

I'm sorry, Johnny.

I'm sorry you found out.

Oh, that helps.

Well you just shouldn't of come back that's all.

Not until the war was over.

Then you'd never of found out.

Do you have a gun?

Oh, Johnny, don't.

You'll be killed.

What difference does it make?

You're on their side now.

Well, I protected you, I lied for you.

Now just what do you think is gonna happen to me

if they find you now?

Oh, please, please don't hate me so much

that you'd kill yourself.

What do you want me to do?

Well you have to get out of that uniform.

I have some clothes of my brothers that

I put here when they took over the house.

Oh yes, I'll get dressed

and I'll go into town with the Colonel.

Usually when he's gone the other officers do a lot

of drinkin', so they won't be payin' much attention,

and then you can just slip right on outa here.

The war didn't cost you a cent, did it?

You had it all intact.

I congratulate you.

I can't hear you.

I said I congratulate you.

Johnny.

Here's a little souvenir for ya.

I have to get dressed.

Just go right ahead.

Just make believe I'm a Union officer.

I hate this war.

I hate the men who fight in it.

No matter what side they're on.

I'll tell that to your brother when I run into him.

He should be real proud of his sister.

Yes?

The Colonel's carriage is waiting, ma'am.

Thank you.

Genavieve, come with me.

I can't.

I can't, I love you, but I can't.

I won't leave you in this house.

I can't go they'll take everything,

they'll burn and steal.

I won't have anything left.

If the Colonel is part of the deal is it worth it?

Yes.

Yes, I can tolerate him 'til the war ends.

It'll all be worth it when it's over.

Oh, how beautiful you look.

You know I am very selfish.

I wanted to be the first one to see you.

Oh, no, Colonel, not right now.

You're gettin' me nervous.

No, Johnny!

Get him!

No, stop.

Wait, please wait.

What are you gonna do with him?

I'm not gonna do anything with your lover, Genavieve.

I'll just throw him out, and you with him.

Jeff, what are you saying?

In compliance with General Sherman's orders

upon our removal from this plantation,

it shall be destroyed so as to furnish

no comfort to the enemy in the event Savannah be recaptured.

You're free to leave, unmolested.

Well, no, no.

What you're thinkin' is wrong.

Why I, I, never laid eyes on him before.

Then suppose you tell me who he is, Miss Genavieve.

He's the rebel soldier you've been lookin' for.

He broke into my room through the window.

Well don't you believe me?

No, Genavieve, I don't believe you.

Well I can prove it.

I'm sorry you doubted my word.

Your filthy property against my life and you turn me in.

Wait outside.

Sit down.

I have a few questions.

I said, sit down.

Now why did you pick this house in which to hide?

The questions I'm asking are rather personal questions.

I ask as a man, not as an officer.

Did you come here because of this woman?

Did she help you escape?

No, I didn't.

I've never seen him before in my life.

You'd be a free man if it weren't for her.

Now's your chance to get even.

He'll lie to get even.

Don't believe him.

Are you going to answer me?

That was your last free punch.

You hit me just once more and I'll stand up right into

that gun and I'll bust your head open or get shot trying.

Now let's cut the party short.

Jeff, I don't know,

I don't know why you're doing this to me.

Where'd he get the clothes?

Why did you hide him during the house search?

Well, he threatened me.

Oh, please don't doubt me.

Jeff, I love you.

Do I have to sit through this?

Don't lie to me, Genavieve.

I'm a proud man, I don't want you as part of the spoils

of war, pretending love so you can hold onto your land.

I couldn't stand that.

Oh, no, I wanna marry you.

I wanna be your wife.

She'll have a litter of rattlesnakes.

You're not a well man.

I'll set you free if you can prove to me

that this woman is lying.

In other words to save my skin,

I'd have to sink to her level, wouldn't I?

Colonel I think I'd rather risk a shot in the back.

Lieutenant, chase him.

Oh, forgive me.

Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me.

Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me, forgive me,

forgive me, forgive me, forgive me, forgive me.

Forgive me.

Colonel, let's get...

There's someone in the hall for you.

His name is Johnny Yuma.

Send him in.

You can come in.

Thank heaven you're alive.

Well I sure can't thank you.

What do you want?

I had to find you, for her sake.

What she did to you is killing her.

That doesn't break my heart.

It broke mine.

I see nothing's changed.

Georgia lost but Genavieve won.

Can't ask you not to be bitter, Mr. Yuma.

You've earned the right to that.

But I can ask you to forgive her.

I'm only her because your advertisement

said it was life and death.

Would you at least talk to her?

If she could just see you it might help.

She thinks she's killed you.

You knew I got away.

Yes, I knew.

But she didn't.

I told her you were dead.

I knew she was lying to me about you.

But I hoped that if she thought you dead,

she might in time forget you and come to love me.

But it didn't turn out that way.

She can't get it out of her mind that she murdered you.

It's made her sick.

She's turned to drink.

When I tried to tell her the truth she wouldn't believe me.

It's a strange world, Mr. Yuma.

Once I held your life in my hands, now...

You mean you want me to go in there

and tell her I forgive her?

Yes, I do.

You're askin' too much.

I'll tell her you're here.

She'll see you now.

So you really are alive.

I thought I killed you.

I know.

You hate me, I know you hate me so much.

But you don't know it, Johnny.

You've had your revenge.

I thought with you alive

and not hating me,

but you still can't forgive me.

Do you think that would help, Genavieve?

Yes.

The same way you're not living with hatred would help you.

Well, thank you for coming.

Jeff,

you've had the worst of it.

I forgive you, Genavieve.

It's broken.

Why don't you get her a new one?
