Original subtitles

This film is inspired by that drammatic context, not only southern, given to us

by the judiciary and parliamentary chronicles and the journalism on the Camorra.

The authors of the film didn't aim to make a historical reconstruction,

let alone impose as "the truth" their version of the doings, but by mixing

real events with fictitious ones, creating a fresco against violence and submission,

hoping that by viewing this film, the spectators might find

further motives to believe in the necessity of the state and laws,

as the only and true protection of civil life.

IL CAMORRISTA aka THE PROFESSOR

- Don Saverio, we can't continue working this way.

- Tell me, what can I do for you?

- I'm always grateful to you for helping my family.

- Today I need the little child.

- Pass, go.

- Go.

- You pass, too.

- You're sweating.

You have fever.

- You're sweating. You have fever. - I have nothing, I'm ok. Get out.

- What are you doing?

- Ready?

- Let's give them a hand. - Okay, let's make a sacrifice.

- Do you need help?

- Didn't you like it? - No, she didn't.

- Piece of shit! - Leave him!

- Help!

- Son of a bitch!

- Leave him!

Please!

What did you do?

What... what?

They killed him!

My son, what happened to you?

What did they do to you?

- What a pity!

- The police!

TEN YEARS LATER

My son, I've missed you so much!

You're finally here in Naples.

Let me hug him! I haven't seen him for ten years.

My son...

You got so old.

Look, even Ciro came to greet you.

We always thought of you.

- I've been thinking, too.

- I was ten when it all began. I was great, quick as a lightning.

I started my career at that age.

- How did you steal?

- How? With bare hands!

- And what did you steal!?

- Rings, silver, bags, watches, wallets...

Without guns, with bare hands.

- This way... Are you interested?

- And you stole this way, without orientation?

And you got seven years for this? You fool!

If you appealed to article 57

of the Constitutional Court's verdicts of 1967,

you couldn't get more than 3 years. You're a fool!

- You talk too much, tell me... Are you a lawyer? - No.

But it's like I was one.

- My son is a lawyer, but it's like he wasn't one.

He's very good, knows everything... civil right, penal right, appeal...

- But he can't find a job.

Don Antonio promised to be interested in him.

- Then he wasn't interested anymore. Is it true? - Exactly.

Salvatore, tell me, what's the name of this lawyer who is treating you like a fool?

- He's a good lawyer. He was recommended to me by...

- Don Antonio Malacarne.

- He eats every day at a fancy restaurant.

- It's an homage to Malacarne. - He deserves it.

- Good morning, don Antonio.

.. Did you sleep well?

Beautiful day. You look relaxed..

- Careful! Gently.

- Orientation! Orientation! Ori-enta-tion!

- What do you mean?

The president of the "Monopolio Banane" company is accused of tax evasion.

By organizing fraudelent activities, he has paid billions

in favour of his own companies under false names.

- This is called stealing! With orientation, with intelligence.

- Gaetano Zarra, why are you in jail? - Ciggarete smuggling.

- What about you, Salvatore?

- For stealing! - Stealing chickens...

- What about you, Domenico Lasciarra? For fraud?

And you punk? Armed robbery...

And you, Di Domenico?

For pimping and trafficking... women, children...

Now that you're jail, who takes care of your families, your children?

Don Antonio Malacarne? He does not care for you.

Malacarne pays your lawyers?

I mean, of course, he pays good lawyers that let you rot in here!

But he doesn't talk about this.

- Stop the preaching. Speak clearly!

- He's right!

- I meant that everyone here thinks for his own sake,

and people like you end up rotting in jail!

- And you, you and you... You're not less intellegent than him...

The problem is that you're not organized.

- And you with this look of a professor... How did you get 30 years?

- I killed a man. - How? By hitting him with books?

- He killed him with his hands!

- Alfredo! - Damn it professor, everytime you're here you got something to say.

- Professor, write her that I love her and want to marry her.

- If not I'll kill her! - What?

- You can't threaten the woman you love.

- Yes I can, write exactly that. - I'll take care of this.

- I'll kill her!

- Who are they? - The Calabrese.

The boss is Don Mico Spina. Sharp as a serpent.

- And the Sicilians? - Over there, near the wall.

Do you see them? Strong and dangerous.

And those in front of us are the revolutionaries.

They talk and talk, but their minds are confused.

- And Malacarne... When will he get out?

- He can leave whenever he wants.

If you got something to ask him.. A favor, protection... Request a meeting!

But never go without a gift!

- Soon or later I'll meet him. But I won't be the one to request a meeting.

- Do what you have to, and then clean my cell, professor.

- The rest is finished!

- I've been in jail for ten years... and never cleaned anyone's cell.

Rosaria!

- Going there? - Yes.

- Come, let's go by car, so we stay a bit together.

- There's no need. - Wait, I'm going to get something.

- Take it. Maybe they let it in.

- Thank you, Ciro.

- Wait.

- The labels are excellent. But the water sucks.

Tell Nunziata to deliver only the labels in America.

- We'll get the bottles and the water there. - As you wish, don Anto.

They drink Coca-cola there... they understand nothing. This way we save money and time.

- Go on.

- He's good, but a bit reserved. I'm afraid somebody might hurt him.

- If you could protect him...

- Who's she talking about? - The Vesuvian professor... He who writes letters.

- I can't do anything for your junk brother. But I can protect you. What do you think?

- Rosa, why do you humiliate yourself in front of all? You don't need anyone's mercy!

-I don't need the protection of anyone! - Yes, I understand it, but be quiet, quiet...

- It's ok, lawyer. - At you disposal.

- What happened to your face? -Nothing...

- 841 - Ciro sent you these. He made them in the factory.

- Ciro had a fine career.

- How is my appeal going? - You have to wait. - You always say this.

- How much money do we have? - Some millions.

- How much? - Four, maybe five.

- Is this your son, the lawyer? - Yes, it's him.

- What's your name? - Goffredo La Sciarra.

Listen, I'll give you money to start a law office. But you have to help me!

- Fine.

- They should tremble when they see you.

- You will defend what I say. On my expenses, you understand?

- He's out of his mind.

He doesn't understand that sooner or later will kiss Malacarne's feet.

The dogs are missing, professor. Bravo, congratulations!

It's obvious that you're not like him. He trains without giving a damn.

I instead find some associates.

And talk about business and taxes, the things I share with nobody.

But the organization... the old Camorra? It's a mess.

It's a mess inside and outside the jail.

Everything scattered, many littles bosses rotting each other,

they can't even conduct cigarette smuggling.

And you know why Malacarne doesn't like to talk about these disgraces?

- Yes, because he's linked with Cosa Nostra.

Tell me the truth... Why are you, Calabrese, so interested in Camorra?

What the fuck it's in for you?

- Let's talk frankly. - Yes professor, you're intelligent...

With one like you it's possible to go higher. Much higher.

Are you following me? Of course you're following, you're intelligent.

But intelligence is not enough, professor!

Like people say in Naples, you must have the balls... and, do you have them?

- Take this, Alfredo. You may need it when you get out.

So your woman can see what a gentleman you are, and you marry her instead of killing her.

- Thank you, professor! If you're in need, just call me!

- I want you to do me a big favor.

- You've got no manners. What do you want?

I've got a message for you from the professor of Vesuviano.

- Ah, the jerk... What does he want from me?

- He invites you tomorrow to the yard for a pincers duel.

- A duel?

- But why does this jerk want to die so young?

- Make friends in times of peace so that they can help you in times of war!

- Good luck professor!

- What time is it? - 12:05.

What time is it?

12:10.

- Will he come or not? - Now will see.

- I bet Malacarne won't come.

Don Anto!

- What's up? - It's from your lawyer.

There's a letter inside.

- The President of the Republic of Italy gives the grace and a medal for civil values

to Antonio... for saving with a brave act...

That's it, dear president!

"...with a brave act..."

- What time is it? - It's 12:30!

- Malacarne is a cartoon thug!

Malacarne is a cartoon thug!

A cartoon thug... !

- Well done professor of Vesuviana.

- The professor has got balls.

- Ma'am, where does Rosaria, the professor's sister, live?

- There, on the first floor. - Thanks.

- Wait me here, I'll call you.

- Good morning. - Lawyer...

- Dona Rosaria... - Yes?

- Who are you? - Allow me to introduce myself!

My name is Alfredo Canale.

- What do you want? - The professor sent me to greet you...

I didn't want to, but he insisted.

- Fine...

Come.

This is all we can give to you. We are not rich!

- I know... And this honours you.

Even my father hasn't done so much for me.

Dona Rosa, I, my brothers and my friends are at your disposal...

for everything, understand?

- Fine, you can go now. - Thank you, dona Rosaria.

- You must be proud of your brother!

By now, everyone respects him in jail.

He managed to humiliate Malacarne!

- What are you thinking of? Pay here and there... donate here and there!

What is this story? You even challenge the big ones!

- It wasn't a challenge, just a misunderstanding.

- That you can pay with your life! Do you know who is he? Remember?

- I know who he is, Rosa. And I know who I am.

- Do you believe in me?! Rosa, stay calm. Life is a smile.

- Did you come with Ciro? - How do you know?

Tell him to come here, I want to talk to him.

- I asked how do you know.

- Ah, I know, I always know everything.

- How could he...? You need a special permit.

- Don Anto, this was a victory! - Nunziata! You never get old.

- You look fine. - There's the car. - Thank you.

- It's been a long time. - Ah, a lot...

- Do you make the buttons of the clothes?

- No.

- What about the linings? - No.

- So you need cloth, cotton, crutches, machines...

- Right? - Yes.

- Then you make deals with many factories.

- Is this right or not? And you all have to pay a tax to Malacarne.

- And to another, and to everyone else that comes.

- From now on you don't have to pay anything to anyone.

- And who will protect us? - I will. The professor of Vesuviano.

- How?

- I baptise this place like our three old men baptised it!

If they baptised it in iron and chains, I baptise it with in and chains.

I raise my eyes up the sky and see a star falling.

And the place is baptised.

With silent words, the society is formed.

Tell me, what are you searching for?

- I'm a young man searching for honour.

- How much does a pigeon weight? - As much as a feather thrown into the wind.

- And what does it symbolize? - A keeper of silence.

That flies and flies... and brings to the society all that he listens, sees and gains.

- If you betray, this bread will turn into lead.

And this wine will turn into poison.

If I first knew you as a honourable young man,

from now on, you are a pigeon belonging to this society.

- Professor, I want to show you my appreciation.

My men are tailing Malacarne day and night.

We know where he is and how to catch him up.

It's all organised in detail.

What do you want to do? Do you want to do things by halves?

The king or the vice-king?

- The man who will kill Malacarne, will be my man.

- I like you, it's what I wanted to hear.

- Good morning, dona Rosaria! - Good morning!

- Ma'am, shall I clean downstairs? - No, thanks...

Put the TV there... Do you get it or not?

- Dona Rosaria... - Good morning, Alfredo.

- Do you need anything? - No.

- Dona Rosa, if you allow me, I'm the one to give you something this time.

- Welcome in! Close that door. And hurry with those packs!

Come.

- Graziante of Secondigliano. - Dona Rosaria...

- And Jacono de Pagani. - It's a pleasure.

- This is for this month. And send my greetings to your brother from me and my friends.

- The friends expect great things from the professor. - Thank you.

- My respect, dona Rosaria.

- All this belongs to your brother.

- I've got something to give you too. It's from my brother.

- Dou you have an answer? - I will.

- What does it mean: "The ring is in front, the serpents at the back"?

- Nothing, dona Rosaria. It means nothing.

- We passed a wonderful evening, Titas. - Thanks!

- I hope all the business matters will go as fine as the mineral water.

And enough with the mineral water and the cigarettes, times change.

- Yes, but refining is the problem.

- Who is that guy? - Frank Titas, american.

- Goodbye, Titas.

- Prepare yourself.

- You can leave. - Good night.

- Come on.

- Nine on eight. He hit it again.

- Damn...

- What does it mean "The ring in the front, the serpents at the back"?

- He's coming down.

- I know you. Who sends you?

- He who gives life, can also take it. Professor of Vesuviano.

- The professor excuses himself. He couldn't come.

- He sent him to greet you.

- Leave it.

- How is the menu? - Exquisite.

- Eat it yourself. - Thank you, professor.

- And this evening, champagne for all! We must celebrate!

- And of course, nobody saw anything! - Please, Mr. Questor.

- If the hand has been brought here, it means that the assassin has been in jail.

- You think so?

- And when a boss is killed in jail, it means that another one will take his place.

There will be war!

Who cares if they kill each other...

They make our job easier.

- And who will they kill when they agree with each other?

- Listen director ? - Yes.

I wanted to make some recommandation, if I can..?

I wanted to tell you that these incidents don't raise your reputation. Let's prevent them!

- This is not a control! This is an abuse. Let's make a scandal!

- Escape!

- Let's make justice!

- Resist no longer!

- I order you to enter in your cells. I promise that nothing will happen to you!

- What will happen? You'll leave us in jail.

- We want a reform! This is a sewer, not a jail! Reform!

- Reform! We want reform!

- Re-enter in your cells!

- I'll make a proposal to you.

- You have nothing to do with this, professor. It's a political problem.

- And what is politics? The art of fucking the people near you.

Where are you from? From Padova?

So you won't care if they transfer you!?

But the others are people like me,

they have a home, a family, their children visit them.

So what will happen if they are tranferred?

Comerades, why do you want to fuck it up?

Do you want to be victims of this society?

- He's right!

- Bravo, professor! We'll give you a ration book.

- If it is for the good of these poor people, I accept any ration book.

Comerades, I know what you want. You want more justice in jail.

It's right. It's sacrosanct.

But how? How? With a revolution?

What a disappointment! The reform will come soon or later... in the papers.

- But you know what can you do with the papers? - Yes, we understood!

But if you listen to me, I can give you immediately something good.

I can give you three things. One: that none of you will transferred.

Two: you will receive visits more often and eat better.

Three: if any of you needs money, inside or outside the jail,

you can count on the Vesuvian professor.

If you want to create problems, forget my name.

But if you want to remember it, come down in peace,

and before starting other troubles, come to me first.

- And now Mr. director you owe me something.

I must go out tonight at eight. Don't be afraid.. I'll come back before the dawn.

- Is this the meaning of "The ring in front, the serpents at the back"?!

Answer me! You made me a messenger of death!

- So you opened the letter!? - Yes I did... I wanted to know!

- You don't believe in me?!

- Believe you?! You shoot at the back without fear.

If you kill people this way... you won't come back home!

What would the father say if he was alive?

- I didn't kill anyone, don't you understand this? Keep it in mind!

- Rosa...

I'll come back home. I'll come, for sure.

What should I do? I have to stay for 20 years in jail.

What would you do? Would you become a trash?

Should I submit to the first jerk that passes over?

- What can I do? What? - Don't do this!

Calm down!

I didn't mean it, I don't know what I was thinking of.

You can do as you please, just don't get nervous.

- If I have to spend the rest of my life in jail, I want to live it like a boss.

And if father was alive, he'd give me right.

But he is not, so... only you can give me right.

You must give me right, you!

Yes, I'll give you right, but not for killing.

- Only for good deeds. - Exactly, for good deeds.

But to do good, one shouldn't think with heart.

Don't forget it.

A tax, an extortion, a protection produces wealth for all.

It's only about having a true society,

with true people and strict laws equal to all.

Misery can cost even the price of life, but who is fair, deserves a reward.

In Naples and all Campania there are 104.000 factories, 37.000 dockyards,

25.000 hotels, 280.000 storehouses, 80.000 ambulants and thousands of professionals.

If we establish a minimum contribution of 100.000 liras per month,

we'll have about 600 billions in a year.

It's an initial sum that must be wellmanaged.

A part will be spend to pay the affiliates, the prisoners and their families...

The rest of the money will be re-invested.

- How do we deal with the old Camorra?

- If they want to live in peace,

they'll have to pay us a tax for every pack of cigarettes,

and for all kinds of smuggle, those that already exist and those who are to be invented.

- Even narcotics? - I said all kinds of smuggle. Am I clear?

- Well, let's admit that we all agree, like I believe.

But let's talk frankly: this will provoke a war.

Who will fight?

- We are already a lot of people, and we'll become more.

In our region, in Naples, there are more than 300.000 people unemployed.

And what will we offer them? A job! We will revive southern Italy!

- You're right, we were in need of someone like him.

- I told you.

The reformed Camorra must have three things.

First, a perfect organisation,

second, enough money to corrupt politicians and judges,

and third, the conviction that we possess the right over the life and death of everyone.

- Stop it!

- It's almost dawn. What do you want to do?

- Cavalier, this year the whole harvest is compromised.

If the earth does not give what I need... I'll cry.

You've been saying that all year! It brings bad omen!

Will you work or leave?

- Help this poor creature!

- Only you know how to say: 'for the sake of the boy'!

You must go away from the land. I've promised it to someone else.

Ah, this american music...

- Salvatore, one day this castle must be mine.

Keep it in mind when you become mayor.

- Thank you for coming back. You are a man of honour.

We guarantee security, to you and your families.

A life policy which we advice not to refuse.

Each month our affiliates will come,

by introducing themselves in the name of your holy protector,

that you must bless with a spontaneous offer.

Cause every offer that's not given out of heart,

it's either delayed or brings other disgraces,

which will hurt the holy one, but the sinner more.

- This area is resolved. Let's move on.

It's been six months without receiving my pension.

They told me that I'm dead in their files.

But I'm still alive. What should I do?

- Such delicate hands! To tell the truth, the best of all gentlemen.

- The mayor should take care of this. Give me today's mail.

- My son has been waiting for a job for five years.

They make him a lot of promises, but he's always jobless.

And he also has to get married.

- Fine, he will start on monday. We'll tell you where.

- Thank you. - Take these for now.

- And for the elections... remember who you should vote for!

- How many persons in your family? - Seven persons.

- I count on you. Don't forget.

- Thank you very much!

- It will lead to Maronna. - Goodbye!

- Sisters, you may enter!

- You two!

- Sit down. So...?

- I don't know if it was a right choice to come here.

But where could I go? At the police? It's worse there.

First they arrest you and then don't believe in you, but in him.

And when he comes out might kill me.

- Who are you talking about?

"You'll like it" he told me, "you are old enough now!"

He persuaded me,

but after he finished, he called his friends!

They've taken advantage of me for months! I can't stand it anymore.

- Don't cry, Rita...

- I shouldn't tell it to anyone.

- Help me, Rosaria!

- Do you know him?

- He works for Nunziata. He trades kids.

There are more than 20 like him in the hood. What should I do?

Fine.

- Employments should be discussed with the Trade Union!

Say no to the mafia! Rebel against Camorra!

- Leave me alone!

- You with these fucking leaflets!

I'll make you eat them!

Understand you fool?!

Cettina...

- Leave me alone! I told you what I had to tell!

- You will marry me, cause I love you. - I'll never marry you!

- If you refuse I'll shoot you. - Go away!

- I swear I'll shoot you!

- Will you marry me or not? - No!

Will you marry me or not?

Think about it, Cetti!

- No!

Can't you understand that I love you!

Do you understand it or not?

Do you renounce Satan?

- Yes.

- And all his doings? - Yes.

- Do you want Antonio to be baptised by the church in which we all believe?

- Yes, we want.

- Antonio, I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

- Amen.

- Now that I and God have another son... if He will not protect you, I will!

- Professor, tell us something.

The people are very interested.

- I'm not an important man. Ah, I didn't like your article!

- Be brave professor! - Thank you.

- The trade unions were relieved. - Thank you, professor.

- Frank Titas, the american, finally wants to talk to you.

But he wants to talk only to you.

- Well, I'm looking to get out of here in a more sensational way.

The old families and those of New York,

must know that we are the strongest.

- If everything goes well, as lawyer says,

they'll transfer you to an asylum, and then everything will be easier.

- Mr. president, this expertise contains the results of the psychic examinations

which prove, without a shadow of doubt, the poor mental health, the madness of my client.

- Let's proceed with the interrogation of the defendant.

- Your Honour! I'm tired, I've standing up all day...

- Ok, fine... Anything else to add?

Oh yes, you see Your Honour, I wish all the best to you and your family.

But if you say that I'm not mad, some thoughts come into my mind...

let's say, something happens to you or your family... and if then happens for real...

...what can I do? You'll become mad too?!

And then we need another judge,

to send both of us straight to the asylum...

- Turn around, otherwise I'll...!

- Rosa, can you imagine the faces of the New Yorkers when they read the newspapers:

The Vesuvian Professor escaped with a tommy-gun like the do in the movies!

- Also on the TV professor!

- Well done, Alfredo!

- And the expression in Nunziata's face!

- What do you want? - I bring a message from the Vesuvian professor.

Ah, and if the answer is: Five garbage bags with you inside?

Come on!

- If I and my men are not out after 5 minutes,

this place will explode.

You will all die here.

- You're trapped! - It's not true. It's a bluff.

- Come on, shoot!

- Fine, speak! What does this Vesuvian professor want?

- He wants your business to go on peacefully.

This peace will cost you 30.000 liras for each pack of cigarettes,

60.000, for each robbery,

and a lump sum of 30 milions for the gambling and prostitution.

Each day, it's understandable.

- What do you think we are? A beneficient organisation?

- This is our blood. How much does this vampire want?

- You can keep it for the moment.

- Hello? - We don't want to pay you anymore.

- The snow is untouchable.

- Rita!

- O my god!

Over 100 assasined people since the beginninig of this year.

The command of narcotics' trade is the cause of this war between

the allied camorrist organisations of Nunziata, Berzella and Musella against the reformed Camorra.

Meanwhile, goes on the pursuit of the escaped from the criminal asylum in Campania.

Even today, a large number of people protested against organized crime.

- Did you take precaution? Are you infomed?

- Of course, be calm! - Fine.

Titas will receive us in his home with his guests.

You'll see what kind of people. Businessmen, bankers, entrepreneurs, showmen...

All strive to become friends with Frank Titas.

- Good evening. - Good evening.

- Do you know him? - That one?

He's on TV each week.

- And those two?

- The old one is one of the biggest bankers in Italy.

The other one is Roberto Sapienza. Comes and goes into the politicians' homes like they were his.

- How do you know them?

- If you hadn't spent all those years in jail, you'd have known them too.

- If I hadn't spent those years in jail, we wouldn't be here now.

- I do enjoy this good company, but I prefer talking in private.

- You don't have to worry, everyone you see is a friend of mine.

And if we will agree, they will be also yours.

- Ok, fine.

- We can rely on you the narcotics' trade in Campania.

But what do you gurantee us?

How will you deal with the old families?

- The old clans are your problem. Or am I wrong?

We can disembarc, refine and deliver the goods to Milan.

You'll take care of the distribution.

Starting a conflict would be useless and expensive.

The profit will be enough for all. If there will be a profit.

- Nothing is better than champagne. It keep them clean and cool.

Your friend doesn't waste his time.

They call her "Peachy", cause she has such a velvet skin.

They look good together.

- They look good cause when people fuck, each knows the other's game.

So what is your game? You talk of gurantee, deliveries, percentages.

But without your permition and that of the Cosa Nostra,

I can not send messengers in Peru or in Thailand.

- Bravo, professor. I like you!

But you see, that invite wasn't all from myself.

But on Cosa Nostra's account. The credit goes to them.

- I had the same impressions 20 years earlier.

Where are you from? From Vesuviano? Do you know Alfredo Canale?

He was a friend of mine. What does he do now? Works for you?

- If you know everything, why ask then?

- Maybe I talk too much. Cause you are my fellow countryman, understand?

That car is ours, the escort is necessary, professor.

The news flow in this city.

- Commissary, there will be a reason for your arrival. - And what's your reason for being here?

- Any news? - The investigation goes on.

- You have to tell me. Where is he hiding?

- You should tell me. I'm sure he didn't escape, someone has kidnapped him.

Who was it? And where is he now? Commissary, investigate on this!

- Excuse me. - You're welcome.

- Hello! - Rosa, it's me. I wanted to greet you.

- I got it. Did you arrange it for tonight?

- What? Can't you speak? Is there anyone there?

- Yes... It should be a song. What?

- The Holy One should go and talk to the Eternal Father. - When?

- I'm busy now, call another time.

- I'll send you the registration of this phonecall,

so that you'll be calm about your brother's life.

- Good morning. - Thanks.

- The professor of Vesuviano, Joe Gandino, from New York.

Tony Cuomo, from Miami.

- Sit down.

- Thank you.

- Did you travel fine my friend? - Yes, fine.

- So, what's up in Naples? - Some trouble going on.

- But now that you're free, you can make things right.

Too much killing bring good to nobody.

You know how it goes. You're between the hammer and anvil.

When order is needed, you have to keep it.

- I know you are doing fine, and that you treat well your people.

But you can not handle it alone, you'll have trouble.

- Frank is my witness, I offer partnership to those who deserve it.

But... each zone should have one boss.

The sicilians in Sicily, the calabrese, in Calabria.

- And you in Campania... - With your permission.

- You have permission to listen, if you like.

Well, we need the stuff here. Sicily isn't enough.

We don't like those from Marseille. Naples is good.

But you must not mistreat your old friends.

Fighting a war is simple, but you have to maintain peace.

Remember that a father never places himself against his own sons.

- But I...

I want to be your son.

- Ok.

- 365 rooms. One for each night.

- Do you remember it? - Yes, of course.

But now this is your home. Our life will change from now on.

We'll do great things, you'll see.

- They get richer. They buy banks, planes, buildings...

And how much do they pay you? A million for the delivery?

500.000, for killing a man? You risk your life!

This will cost you 10 years and still you won't speak. Why's that?

Beacause the professor will send 300.000 liras to your families each month?

- If I speak up, will you send money to my family then?

- He who feeds me... - Is my father!

Do you see how beautiful it is? Look. This one is the pathway.

Here we will set the equipments. And the golf camp all around here.

- How much does it cost? - 35 billions! We recieved all the financing.

Here we can make every investment you wish, professor.

This will become an important zone for tourism. What do you think, Ciro?

- And when will the grass grow? - We'll make it grow, we'll make it.

- Salvatore, losers do that here!

A golf camp on Vesuvio? This project is stupid!

- What do you know about tourism? This is my job.

- So you are saying that you and your friends have taken the responsability

to build the airport and the gas-epurator

because you are experts in transports and ecology?

And you send us to play golf?

- The deal was different.

Tell to your friend Mesillo and to that shark Senator D'Amore.

I can take your votes the same way I gave them to you.

- I've done what I could.

- Then step aside, and let us make the deal.

We don't like to watch from a distance, we want to sit in a table. At the head of the table!

- Well done, Ciro. Let us meet that senator and the councillor.

- I warn you, we can't get more than this.

- Prepare a dining party, Salvatore! I want to sit at the head of the table.

- Here they are!

- Good evening! - Good evening!

- Honourable Malventi, allow me to introduce a friend of mine.

- Good evening. - Franco Pirrone, constructor.

- How can you make such deals with an unknown?

- It's a trap, but the professor will pull it out.

- I hope so.

- Ciro Parrello. - It's a pleasure!

- So you are a constructor. It should be hard in this zone.

- Look, as far as I'm concerned, I pay a tax each month to the Camorra and they let me in peace.

- But such violence is unbearable!

- And why's that? Don't we pay taxes to the government which forgets about us?

Instead, the Camorra protects us.

Let's be frank, honourable one! Do you think I shouldn't pay a tax for it?

I'm joking, it's obvious.

- Don't be afraid honourable one, here in Naples people joke even on drammatic matters.

- Nevertheless, these people are cheerful.

- Hey, keep your eyes open.

- Wait here.

- Or the houses are insufficient. I'm willing to invest billions in contruction.

- And ask for permissions.

Then comes for instance, councillor Mesillo. And what does he answer me?

- Very well, you can leave.

- It's the chance we were waiting for. The professor must die!

- Frank Titas must deal with us.

- Do it!

- Come on!

- So according to you, we shouldn't fight against cigarette smuggling!

- It's logical, there are 80.000 napoletans working in this industry.

And one morning they are left in the middle of the street... A revolution in the city!

Look, I could even employ them, if the government allows me to produce cigarettes.

But will it allow me?

- Things are getting complicated. You come with me. You go there. You call the others.

- Tell me something. You mention billions very freely.

- Do you have such an important business? - And I'll reveal a secret to you.

You are sitting at a table with a big criminal.

The legendary boss of the reformed Camorra, under pursuit for a year.

- You are very amusing. But, I don't believe you. My friends would never do me this.

Come on!

- Hello, can I talk to Ciro Parrello please? - I'm sorry but they are all gone.

- Hello, answer me dona Rosa!

Answer me, dona Rosa... answer me!

- Goodbye! - Good night!

Good night to all!

- Goodbye, Salvato. - Good night.

- Get out or I'll shoot you!

- Slow down, slow down!

- Fuck it!

- Did you see his face?

- Leave me alone! Fuck! I've done nothing!

- Don't move! - You're hurting my neck!

It's my friend's car, I didn't steal it! The papers are ok.

- What's happening, Alfredo Canale?

Some strange movements tonight. Nunziata, Verzella... they're all around.

- It's a beautiful night, commissary! - For whom?

You know that they're searching for the professor as much as we are.

Not to arrest him, but to kill him!

- Then why didn't you stop them?

-Only if you help me get to him before them.

- Can I make a phone call?

- It's useless calling dona Rosaria. I've cut the line, jerk!

Tell me what you wanted to tell her.

- I'll tell you... if you leave him in peace.

Otherwise you're dead, commissary!

- Hurry up.

- Good night! - Go to sleep.

- See you tomorrow. - Stay the two of you tonight.

- Fine. Good night!

- He has arrived.

He's in a house at Reto Montagnone. Come quickly!

- Damn it! Saved!

- Don't shoot!

Don't shoot!

- B-Zed 29, go over the hill. Don't shoot without my order.

No cars must leave the zone.

Be careful, they are armed.

- Hey, throw your weapons!

- Fairly on you this time!

The Vesuvian professor could get caught only by the chief of the mobile squad.

- I'm simply a commissary. - You'll become, you'll become. I know everything!

- If I was a priest, I'd become the pope for sure.

- What names?! I won't tell any!

What are you thinking of, commissary? I'm not a spy!

- I'm just asking where do you want to go. - Am I free? No! Why do you ask then?

- It's bad for you, this is a dangerous jail.

I can transer you to a calmer jail.

- I want to stay where the professor is.

- Why are you sure that he'll understand what you did? Think it over.

- He'll understand.

And even if he doesn't, I'm a Camorrist! Do you know what a Camorrist is?

- Professor!

- You do not have anything to hide!

- Alfredo!

- Tell professor that I didn't betray him.

- Believe me.

- And he is the godfather of my son... The godfather of our son, Alfredo!

He is a killer, you understand? You see?

He will pay for this, I swear he will pay!

- The first crime you're accused of is escape from the criminal asylum.

- What escape? Your Honour, I just moved away. Maybe a bit noisily...

I just moved away, I didn't escape.

- Your Honour! My client is considered as a madman.

A madman escaping from an asylum, or another place, doesn't commit a crime, as long as he's mad.

- What did you do during your escape?

- I can't tell you, cause you could give me three life sentences.

But I can tell you that I helped the justice.

- Do you refer to the 300 deaths of this year? - What deaths? The starvation ones?

- The assassined ones! It's about the assassined people.

- Looks like someone was subscribed to the funeral pomps. It's logical, isn't it?

- Silence, silence!

- What about the C.R? The reformed Camorra? What do you know?

- C.R... maybe it's the Red Cross. Or "Cara Rosaria", the name of my sister.

- Is it true that you have about 3000 affiliates ready even to give their life for you?

- Ma'am, they say so. Looks like I've seeded well!

Your Honour, follow me, educated ones.

If I hadn't seeded so well, they would not say these things.

Looks like I was destined for good deeds, helping...

maybe cause I need affection, I don't know...

Yesterday I donated 2 millions to the orphans. Write it down, write it!

- So, you consider yourself a messiah? - You said it!

Excuse me for using the singular pronoun. But the plural doesn't fit with the Gospel.

- Silence, silence! Or I'll empty the courtroom!

- Send the photographers away.

- Defendant, sit down! This is a courtroom, not a theater!

- You see what I should defend myself from? From popularity!

- Who are the members of your organisation?

- I can tell you, but I have to mention more than a hundred names

of important people. Even high officials.

- Do you want me to? - If it's hard for you, we'll help.

Your Honour, I demand to call here the widow of Alfredo Canale.

- Silence!

Objection! Your Honour, the defence wasn't aware of this. This witness is not foreseen by the instructions.

- Lawyer, I respect you, but if you shout like this...

You talk, I talk... Nobody understands a thing.

Your Honour, you have never had the honour of interrogating someone like me.

Nevertheless, you want to humiliate me. You are humiliating me.

Cause I'm being judged not by the main procurator, but by a public ministry. Moreover, by a woman!

- You are a clown. - Do you know what I do with a female?

- Silence!

- This is a scandal! A insult to justice!

- Silence! - This is an unacceptable scandal!

- The session is suspended. Take the defendant away!

Doctor Jervolino! I said that you were going to be the chief of the mobile squad.

Congratulations! Greet the Questor from my side!

Little boy, death took your father first, and then your mother.

The only innocent witness of an assasination commited by traitors.

Grow up healthy, differently!

Forget everyone and everything, for a better life.

This is art! This is poetry! This is the heart of our professor!

He accepts with honour the prize of the greatest poet of Naples.

- You look good, Anna. - You too.

Any news about the reduction of your punishment?

- Professor is taking care of it. Did you send the money?

- Yes. I'm reading his poetry. - Beautiful, huh?

- Especially the love poetry. - I've read them, too.

- I think he's a remarkable man. - Great!

- Oh god, I can't understand some of his fantasies. They look a bit gay.

But can't blame him. You know how things are in jail.

- Good morning, professor. - Ciro, lawyer...

Earthquake... earthquake!

Quiet, stay quiet, it's an earthquake!

- Come... Where is he?

It's a divine sign, the apocalypse of the old Camorra.

- Kill him...

Where are you going, asshole? You didn't finish him. You take care, send him to peace.

I have got two reasons to kill you.

First, you didn't show yourself a good camorrist.

Second, for what you said about the neatness of my personality.

But I'll forgive you. And you'll give me something in exchange.

- Who is the girl that pays you visits? - She's my sister.

- You will give me your sister. She's mine, that will do!

- Raise it. - Wait.

- What a disaster, doctor Jervolino! What could I do!?

- We'll try to understand what happened.

Each of the convicted shall describe what has been doing during the earthquake.

Every movement, everything.

- Yes, I understand, but with all what happened

many were transferred by order of the ministry. It's for precaution.

- And was the professor transferred? - Some hours ago.

And was he transferred alone or together with Gaetano Zarra, Gennaro di Domenico and all the others?

- Yeah, they were nearly 40.

- And I assume that they've been transferred to the same jail.

- Hit the klaxon.

- Thanks, Rosa. Wait...

Take off your clothes.

- We got to hurry, we got little time left.

- It's been months without a home. Shame on you!

- I'm aware about your situation but we didn't cause the earthquake.

It's a natural disaster, much patience is needed.

We're working for you. We're working for you.

- So, that problem is solved, understand?

- What about the houses? When will the contracts be signed?

- Everything has its own time. I have to go now.

- My respects.

- And greet your friends.

- Was the addition confirmed?

- Yes, next week, the president will confirm it soon.

Anger and panic over the country after the first terrorist attack of the Red Brigades in Campania.

Some hours ago, the napoletan pillar of Red Brigades

has revenged the slaughter that happened this morning in Naples.

The president of the Reconstruction Commission for the zones damaged by the earthquake,

regional Councillor Mimmo Mesillo has been kidnapped.

The two agents, the driver and his secretary were assassinated.

- They got a big bastard. He has earned billions.

- Shut up! Now all the region will be full of cops, and we can't do a shit.

Go and call all the terrorists of the ninth tent and bring a thousand here.

How did they dare to act like revolutionaries in my home?

- I've done nothing. I don't know this councillor Mesillo.

- Run!

- Run!

- We can't stay here!

- I've never seen so many cops in all my life. Is this a revolution?!

- The burst of a war, what a shame!

- You can't do anything here! - This is the real earthquake!

- Who is this Councillor? If they don't find him, we will... dead or alive.

- We can't go on this way!

- Ok, fine... Silence!

- Allow me, dona Rosa. What's the problem? Nobody has money!

We have nothing, no more narcotics. That fucking Titas doesn't supply us anymore!

He has switched back to the old families. Tell the professor to do something about it.

- The professor knows everything and is trying to find the appropriate solution.

But you have to wait some days. And tell this to your friends.

My brother never abandons anyone. Do you understand? Never!

- Why did you want to talk to me?

- Oh, why do you use this kind of tone? I wanted to offer you a big opportunity.

To make you the most famous chief of the mobile Brigades in Italy.

I'll help you solve an important case, of national interest.

And maybe you arrest some terrorists.

And then you must thank me by just closing an eye...

Why talk about this? You're an intelligent person.

And you're a jackal! But I represent the state, and I don't make agreements with a camorrist.

- Liar! You did it once.

- Yes, it's true... His name was Alfredo Canale.

He told me where you were hiding to save your life.

If I had come a minute after, you would be dead and he alive.

- But you killed him. You know what you are? A stupid!

- But when you got me arrested, you knew you were saving my life...

- Why did you do it? - Because I'm a cop!

- What a disappointment... I thought you were more clever.

If they had kidnapped a naive like you, nobody would care.

But for one like Mesillo, I assure that they'll come to deal with me.

I won't force them, but they will come, people higher than you. The state will come.

Whoever may come...

He is not the state.

-Professor, someone wants to meet you. - Greet me first.

-You can talk now. What's up with you? - They engaged me as a colonel.

Some important people at the director's office want to talk to you. Intelligence Agency.

- I know.

- I know, I always know everything...

- We think that if the terrorists could operate in Naples,

It's easier for you to intervene than it is for the state units.

- Concillour Mesillo is a very weak character.

He's into politics for more than 30 years in Campania.

...and knows many things.

If he surrends to the their threats, the credibility of the institutions would be compromised.

- So professor, my party wants you to save the life of the concillour...

And to do it urgently.

- Gentlemen... You want me to intervene, but I won't deal with you.

I want the big ones. Tell them this and we'll meet again.

- Read it aloud.

- Earthquaked gentlemen...

- Go on, go on!

- Earthquaked gentlemen, concillour Mesillo speaking here.

They have kidnapped me, and they will kill me. Help me, save my life!

Earthquaked gentlemen, force the authorities to give the houses to the homeless families.

Demand a construction plan for the earthquaked zones.

Friends, demand immediate and real intervention, otherwise I'm a dead man.

- It's a message from our secretary. I hope this is satisfactory.

- Almost all...

- Almost all our conditions have been accepted.

- Which means?

- First it's fine for the transfers and the punishment reduction of your men.

Regarding the contracts in the earthquaked zones,

we can give you 50% of the labor.

And regarding yourself, you'll be free, by recognizing you as mentally insane.

All this if you solve the problem in a short time

and without compromising anyone.

Of course the police and the financial guard will know nothing.

- By tomorrow all the terrorists you requested will be here.

- We'll need to know immediately.

- I give you my word, I'll do everything possible to save councillor Mesillo.

- Senator, explain one thing to me.

Why do you want to save the life of this simple councillor by all means?

What's the danger for the president of your party?!

- You are an influential man, you can understand this. Don't ask me anything else.

- I'll escort you, Mr. senator. Come.

- You must do another favor to me. That friend of yours from Milan...

- Frank Titas ? - You must arrest him and transfer him here.

- Police. Your papers please.

- You're under arrest. - But you're crazy!

Some days after the ultimatum of the Red Brigades, the residence of councillor Mesillo,

has been once more a destination for regional and national politicians.

- Let's hear what he says. - What is the position of your party regarding the demands of the terrorists?

Our position is firm, the government cannot negotiate with the terrorists.

Noone shall doubt our intention to not surrender to their blackmail.

We believe in the organs of public order.

- These are our conditions: 5 billions, in unmemorized bank-notes,

a supply of weapons, and your commitment to participate

in the control of the jails, transfers, permissions and punishment reduction.

- I will reply within 48 hours.

- There's one last condition. You should eliminate some cops that trouble us.

- For example? - The chief of the mobile squad, Jervolino.

- Good example...

- Stop! Stop it!

- He is fine, but much tired. He must have walked a lot. That's all.

- These are not cops! - Stop aside!

- Who are you? What do you want? - Councillor, come with us, please.

- Alert, car 15 to the base.

The councillor Mesillo has been liberated, but intelligent service took him away.

- What?! - We've been informed that he's home now.

He's not feeling well, the doctors have prevented him from any interrogation.

Nothing more. Speed up, I don't like this thing.

- What does it mean?

They have prevented the officials from interrogating Mesillo. Everything is possible in Camorra's land.

The camorrists are part of a game that is greater than them. Speed up!

- Careful!

- Come on, pass!

- From the professor.

- Clean your teeth with champagne. So that you'll be alright for your autopsy.

Professor, professor, let's have a talk!

- Congratulations to the bride!

- Thank you!

I find that everything has changed down here. For example the people, the italian people...

- Ok, let's go!

- This night we are all pleased! Even better, we're happy!

- That's my present. We thought we were invited to a wedding, not a funeral.

- Why did your brother kill Titas?

- My brother had nothing to do with it, the decision was not his.

- An applause!

- Who did it then?

- Gaetano Zarra. That madman did it on his own.

- But my brother will punish him.

The professor has betrayed you for his own sake.

He will kill you. A friend.

- Don't bullshit me, more than three months have passed!

You are a councillor, Salvatore. You'll be named deputy, won't you?

And you, Ciro, how much billions did you spend with that friend of yours?

- Shut up!

Five billions were gathered, but only one went to the terrorists!

And those idiots got this! Where are the other four billions?

- Fine, but calm down now!

- Calm down? And the promises? The liberty, I'm not free yet! Fuck!

- They'll maintain their promises, it's only a matter of time.

- You know how the politicians are!

- Bravo... I know how to treat them. Kill them!

- What are you saying? - Yes, yes!

- It could be dangerous. I'm speaking for your own good, undestand this.

Do you remember what happened to Salvatore Giuliano?

- You should have told it before! It's too late now.

- I'm done, professor.

The document came out perfect, like a true one.

- The politicians can't fuck me up! Watch the TV and read the newspapers tomorrow.

And you'll see who ends up like Salvatore Giuliano!

A document, with a stamp still to be verified,

provoked a scandal which threatens to overthrow the government.

Based on the document, the intelligence and some local personalities

have negotitated with the Camorra to free the concillour Mesillo.

Today we collected some opinions. Here the images.

It's absurd! All lies!

The document is false. It's a scandal that the press published it!

- What does your party think? - We say that the document might be false.

But who will assure us that its content is false?

Meanwhile, we have news that the President of the Republic has urged

the transfer of the famous boss of the Reformed Camorra to a high-security prison.

- I've sent thousands of letters to my men in all jails of Italy.

- If you kill me, they'll make a slaughter.

- I'm sorry for what happened to you, but I'm glad you're still alive.

Instead, they condemned me to death.

But I'm glad you're escorting me to the cemetery.

So that you'll get another promotion. Maybe... you'll become a Questor!

- No promotions, tomorrow I'll be transferred.

- Then we are level!

Level...!

- Three months in isolation! They wanted me to go mad!

But they couldn't.

And now we need to act. Those who refuse to pay must be punished.

Punish them examplarly. Select them regardless of the number of dead!

- Exemplary execution! - Calm down!

- We must stay calm.

- I brought you Anna, she's waiting there.

- No, I don't want her. I want to talk to Ciro.

- Tell him to come. - Ciro is not here, he's in Rome.

- Is he doing everything possible? Did he make the politicians tremble?

How many has he put under submission? Those of the intelligence service must pay, too!

- Ciro is doing nothing!

- What?!

You're saying that I'm rotting in here... and he is doing nothing?

He's thinking only of his fucking sake...

Ah, he passed the on other side. Even he betrayed me.

- Of course, Ciro betrayed.

And all those on our side are dead... have betrayed us, or will betray.

Even you betrayed.

- I've never betrayed!

- You betrayed me.

Do you know what my life would be without you?

Have you thought on this?

All these years, you've been interested in the others. Never in me!

If I was tired, if I was ill... if I could sleep or not.

Only orders! Ciro here, Ciro there...

- Oh, I understand, you're trying to save Ciro.

I know you always thought that I loved him. Come on then, dance over my skin.. dance, dance!

Rosa, you know...

the camorrists always think with their brains, and never their hearts.

- Rosaria! What are you doing here?

- Won't you invite me in? - Of course.

- Close the door.

- Give me all the papers and documents! - What does this mean?

- It means that if we you are afraid to strike the fist on the table, then I will.

Give me the letter of the party's secretary, and all the records of the meetings.

- What meetings?! Nothing was recorded!

- Rosa, you must understand, your brother did it all wrong.

Yes, it was beautiful, it was great...

But now it's finished!

- It was beautiful, it was great... but we better forget it, right?

Kiss me, Ciro. Just once.

- We can go now.

- Mr. jugde, I know who killed Ciro and his girlfriend.

- I decided to meet you because I want to collaborate with the justice.

- What's the proof for your good faith? Why should I trust you?

- The professor betrayed us, and wants to kill us all.

He ordered my death, to save his face in front of Cosa Nostra!

But I'm a man of honour.

But I will confess everything, starting from my own murders!

These hands have killed so many, dear judge!

Is this enough for a proof?

- I'll tell everything. Name, surname, affiliates, friends, murderers,

place and time of all the camorrist meetings, things you can't find out on your own.

- Let's start from the Reformed Camorra.

- Traytors!

- Stand up! The court!

- My soldiers will come. I know it.

I know. They will free me. It will be a great assault!

I know, I know...

A thousand knight will descend from the sky.

Another thousand will rise from the see. That will be the day of my revenge!

I know, I know...

They'll come...A thousand from the sky, a thousand from the see...

I know, I always know everything.

Extermination, extermination...

- Professor! You've got a visitor.
