- I've traveled the Earth since the beginning of time.

Sometimes I'm a storm of energy,

sometimes just a gentle breeze.

From time to time, you may not notice me,

but I'm always there.

I am the wind.

Traveling around the globe day in, day out

can be lonely sometimes,

although I'm never alone.

The Arctic can appear inhospitable and barren.

But if you look closely,

you'll see life is thriving.

The Inuit call this majestic bear

the great lonely roamer.

They believe that his soul is as powerful

as his great stature.

But he didn't start off this strong.

In winter, the polar bear mothers

retreat under the snow

to hide from my cold, icy storms.

And every year in these dens,

a small miracle happens.

This is Maidu and her three cubs,

Lasse, Linn, and Kunik,

born just a few weeks ago.

It won't be easy for Maidu.

Triplets are rare for polar bears.

And as you can see, they're always hungry.

But she will have to wait two more months,

until they are strong enough to leave the den,

before she can take her next meal.

Another polar bear cub cries out.

But this one isn't in the Arctic.

He calls from far away, across the frozen seas,

from a city, Berlin.

It's been more than 30 years since a polar bear born here

survived its first few days.

But this one has.

His name is Knut.

Rejected by his mother,

he hovers between life and death.

But he's lucky to have

an experienced polar bear keeper on his side,

Thomas Doerflein.

[Knut screeches]

They seem to have hit it off right away.

Knut's real mother, Tosca,

is next door in the polar bear den.

- Tosca.

- She's an old circus bear,

a hard life.

And she couldn't take care of Knut when he was born.

So Thomas stepped in.

- Lars, Knut's father, is also here.

But he's no help.

Polar bear fathers never raise their cubs.

In fact, it could be dangerous for them to meet.

Thomas Doerflein will have to raise Knut himself.

He's got some job on his hands.

The zoo veterinarian, Dr. Schuele,

is here to help Thomas attempt the seemingly impossible,

to raise a polar bear by hand.

Every two hours, Thomas mixes Dr. Schuele's brew,

combining cat food, baby formula,

cod liver oil, and special vitamins

as a substitute for his mother's milk.

Fortunately, Knut seems to like it a lot.

[Knut screeching]

They are an unusual pair.

But this little cub has a polar bear's soul.

And Thomas, well, he understands it.

Knut's foster mother may be a little unconventional,

but Knut doesn't seem to mind.

After every feed, Thomas brushes his coat

and lets him suckle his finger,

which appears to meet with approval.

Just listen to him.

[Knut vocalizing]

With Knut in safe hands, I can travel on.

Knut isn't the only bear without a mother.

Deep in the dark forest of Belarus,

there are two other cubs on their own.

[cub bellows]

[cub bellows]

Pasha and his sister Masha are brown bears,

only five months old.

Their mother has disappeared,

and they haven't seen her in days.

Trying to reassure each other with calls,

they haven't moved from the spot in case she comes back.

But she won't be coming back.

A few days ago, she died.

They're on their own now.

Every bear at this age needs its mother.

But their instincts are sharp,

and at least they have each other.

If they stick together,

Pasha and Masha may have a chance.

I'm going to keep a close eye on these cubs.

The odds are against them.

Back in Berlin, Knut is growing fast.

Thomas' sleepless nights are already paying off.

Knut has more than doubled his weight.

He's now a healthy 13 pounds.

It's no surprise that Thomas has moved in with Knut

to take care of him around the clock.

It's a full-time job.

He eats every two hours and usually needs a bath too.

- Cleaning Knut's fur is one way to keep it in good condition,

although this job is normally performed

by his mother's tongue.

Oiling Knut's coat also helps to protect it.

A clean bear is a happy bear.

Thomas has his hands full,

but I've got to get back to the Arctic.

Maidu's cubs must be eager to get out by now.

And I want to greet them when they do.

Three months is a long time to spend in a dark den.

And this is a special day.

Time to face the world for the very first time.

Lasse and Linn are little fighters, just like Knut.

But Kunik is the weakest of the triplets

and prefers the safety of Maidu to the chaos of his brothers.

It's always a great day when the cubs first come out to play.

But like most mothers, Maidu made her den

far from the sea.

They are safe here but far from where she can hunt.

Eventually, they will need to travel

to her distant hunting grounds.

Kunik isn't as strong as his brothers.

And Maidu hasn't eaten in more than four months.

This will be a difficult journey.

[cubs vocalizing]

While Maidu and her cubs are safe for the time being,

I'm not so sure about the brown bears,

Pasha and Masha.

They have no one to look after them.

Their hunger and strong sense of smell

has guided them well,

but they still have a lot to learn.

They're still looking for their mother

and have strayed far from their den.

But they may have strayed too far this time.

At Masha and Pasha's age, this wolf could be trouble.

Inside the zoo,

Knut's learning fast.

He's now walking

and practicing with Thomas every day...

[Knut screeching]

But not until after breakfast,

especially with this appetite.

- Oh!

[Knut vocalizing]

- Zookeepers Ronnie and Marcus

have stepped in to help Thomas with his round-the-clock job.

It's a strange family for a polar bear,

but Knut doesn't seem to mind at all.

In fact, family life isn't always this easy.

Kunik battles with his brothers every day

to get his share.

It's tough competition too.

Maidu knows that Kunik must learn to compete

to survive in the Arctic.

It's a hard lesson for such a small bear

but an important one.

Like the Arctic, the forest may seem peaceful,

but it's full of unknown dangers for curious cubs.

This playful pair have been exploring,

looking for food.

But inexperienced bears need to be careful.

A road is a hazardous and unfamiliar obstacle

for bears at any time.

Pasha's instincts are right.

He's wise to take his sister back to the forest.

Back in the zoo,

little Knut is about to come outside

into the fresh air for the first time,

and I don't want to miss it.

[Thomas hissing]

[Thomas grunting]

- This is Knut's first bath outdoors,

not a popular decision.

But while polar bear mothers are very strict,

well, sometimes Thomas can be a pushover.

Who could blame him?

But this little fighter doesn't give up that easily.

- Yeah.

- ♪ That's just what friends do ♪

♪ The world seems much brighter ♪

♪ Without you wouldn't do ♪

- Hi, there.

- Although Pasha and Masha are older than Knut,

they still haven't learned to swim.

I wonder how they will learn with no one to teach them.

This frog would make a good treat

after weeks of eating just grass and leaves,

but it's just out of reach.

He's a brave little cub,

and Masha seems happy to let him take the plunge.

But he'll need to be quicker than that.

This is just one of many skills these cubs will need to master

to ensure their survival.

But there will be plenty more opportunities yet.

Back in Berlin, Knut is in a playful mood.

- [speaking German]

- ♪ You're driving me nuts ♪

♪ Chaos swirls around my head ♪

♪ Brain cells covered in dust ♪

- Rough-and-tumble is a favorite game.

And he's keen to try out his new teeth on anything that moves...

or anything doesn't, come to that.

- ♪ This is my version of normal ♪

♪ This is how I know that I'm still human ♪

♪ This is my version of happy ♪

♪ Anything else, anything else ♪

♪ Anything else ♪

[Knut roars]

- But his play with Thomas has a deeper meaning.

In the wild, young bears also play every day.

And Lasse and Linn are no exception.

Playing isn't just fun.

It also helps cubs grow strong

and learn the skills they need to hunt

and become successful adults.

But poor little Kunik proved to be too weak for the journey.

He wasn't strong enough to follow the family

and died a few days ago.

Maidu doesn't have much time to mourn him, though.

They are still too far from the sea.

And she needs to eat soon,

or they will all be in danger.

Berlin awakens to a new day.

And there's excitement in the air.

Today Knut will meet his fans for the first time.

- They've been waiting months to meet Knut.

They've come after hearing his incredible story...

Politicians, reporters, photographers,

and thousands of visitors from around the world.

Satellites will now beam his amazing story

around the planet.

But first, a little freshening up.

[man speaking German]

Knut doesn't know it, but he has become an ambassador

for his endangered cousins in the Arctic.

A global superstar has been born.

[upbeat reggae music]

- ♪ See how the moon ♪

♪ ls messing with the tide tonight ♪

- The day has been a success.

But even superstars need to relax.

Away from the cameras,

Knut can simply do what he loves best,

play with Thomas.

[Knut vocalizing]

It was so exciting, I almost forgot about my job.

It was time for a good snowstorm.

Up here in the Arctic, I bring the snows for days.

But then I blow the clouds away

and let the sun back to work its magic.

Maidu knows how to wait out the storm,

protecting her cubs.

Once the sun comes out,

Lasse and Linn are ready for action.

A fresh blanket of snow isn't just fun for the cubs.

It's also part of an important lesson.

Maidu is teaching Lasse and Linn the art of the snow bath.

She knows that fur is a better insulator when it's clean.

Lasse and Linn are lucky to have their mother by their side.

Today Knut will meet his parents for the first time.

- Okay, come. Come, come.

[bear vocalizes]

- Tosca and Lars are curious.

- Yeah, that's your papa.

- Does Knut know they are his parents?

And do they recognize him?

[Lars vocalizes]

It's time to check on Masha and Pasha again.

They're always up to something,

and it usually involves food.

The mouse is too quick for them.

But at least there are some ants here,

not a bad second choice.

They are a good team,

even if they fight like most brothers and sisters.

[bear growls]

Ants can make a good meal, if you get enough of them.

Knut is also learning how to deal with tree stumps.

- Knut's enjoying his lazy days.

And there's not much going on in the Arctic either.

So I follow Maidu's tracks in the snow

and notice something's up.

The sun is powerful in the Arctic today,

and my breezes are weak.

Had I brought colder wind today, though,

this huge male could have been trouble for Maidu's cubs.

But fortunately, he's not going anywhere in this heat.

Polar bears have adapted to the cold weather so well here

that big bears like this need to rest on warm days.

But as usual, there's no rest for this hungry mother

and her cubs.

I continue on my way

as Maidu continues on hers.

We will see each other again

when she makes it out to the sea.

Knut isn't ready for the open sea yet.

And he still needs some swimming lessons.

- [speaking German]

- Meanwhile, Pasha and Masha opt for a mud bath.

I doubt their mother would have approved.

There are some advantages to independence,

but there are also dangers.

This wolf is marking his territory.

The cubs had better stay out of his way.

[bear vocalizing]

They're probably safe for now

and can enjoy a quiet night.

But it's not quiet everywhere.

[wolves howling]

Knut's neighbors sometimes howl the whole night long...

[wolves howling]

And sometimes into the morning too.

[wolves howling]

Thomas also takes care of the wolves at the zoo

and makes sure that wolves and polar bears

stay safely on the opposite sides of the fence.

[Knut vocalizing]

[wolf growls]

[wolves growling]

- I knew there would be trouble in the forest.

Pasha and Masha also have a wolf in their neighborhood.

But this wolf isn't behind a fence,

and he doesn't like intruders.

In the forest, everyone must fight for their territory.

[bears growling]

[wolf snarling]

Masha is learning to be brave

and becoming a pretty good fighter herself.

I knew she wouldn't let her brother down.

[animals growling]

The cubs have won the day.

Hopefully, he won't be back.

In Berlin, Knut is growing so fast

that he's finally able to sleep on his own.

- [speaking German]

- Thomas is happy to show Knut his new home,

which means that Thomas can finally go back to his.

- Only polar bears allowed.

[laughter]

[man speaking German]

- ♪ He's so easy to love I keep forgetting why ♪

♪ All I know is being without you

♪ I couldn't stand it ♪

- Masha and Pasha make an important discovery.

They spent last winter in this den with their mother.

And they will need it again for the coming winter.

But some housekeeping is in order.

Brown bears hibernate

and need a den in winter to survive.

Winter is cold, and food is scarce.

If they remember to come back here

when I bring the snow,

they should be safe.

Thomas plays with Knut

every morning before the zoo opens.

They've become true friends.

- ♪ Oh, no ♪

♪ ♪

♪ Remember the time ♪

♪ We were laughing so hard ♪

♪ We started to cry ♪

♪ Your eyes say it all ♪

Thomas and Knut have an important job to do.

Never before have so many people visited the zoo.

Humans rarely get a chance to see polar bears in the wild.

And Knut reminds them how wonderful Arctic animals are.

[upbeat reggae music]

- Knut fever has spread across the world.

And now he and Thomas are the hottest tickets in town.

- The seasons are changing.

And far away from Knut and his fans,

it's time to catch up with Maidu, Lasse, and Linn.

They finally reach the sea

and are now learning how to hunt for themselves,

although there is much to be learned.

Sometimes polar bears share their catch.

Not this time.

But Maidu can catch her own dinner.

There are plenty of seals around here.

Lasse can smell his prey.

But catching it is another story.

It will take Maidu over a year to teach her cubs how to hunt.

Until then, she's the boss.

Time to travel with the sun to the forest.

Pasha and Masha have picked up the scent of something new.

Now all they need to do is figure out how to get it.

Brother and sister seem to have different approaches.

But all the hard work's been worth the effort.

[bear grunting]

- [whistling]

- Knut's lucky.

He doesn't have many challenges getting his treats.

It's good to know the chef.

- [whistling]

- And Knut likes to nibble on only his favorite parts

when Thomas isn't looking.

- These two are really getting around.

The people left this village a long time ago.

But Pasha and Masha can't resist a new adventure.

But their old nemesis is back.

And he's first to raid the plum tree.

The cubs are finally getting wise.

This time, they'd rather wait their turn

than battle the wolf again.

There's enough here for everyone.

The coast is clear.

Too bad they forgot about the plums.

Knut loves his family.

But he's also growing up.

I know things won't stay this way for long.

But right now, I wish they would.

- [speaking German]

- Knut may be getting bigger,

but he still likes nothing more

than tumbling around with Thomas.

- ♪ That's just what friends do ♪

- Knut, come.

- Like many working parents,

Thomas does two jobs at the same time.

But he always finds time for Knut,

no longer a helpless baby

but a strong little bear with mischief on his mind.

- [speaking German]

- Good job Thomas is such a soft touch.

With fall approaching,

Pasha and Masha still haven't learned how to swim.

They must soon learn if they are ever to catch fish.

Will they take the plunge this time?

Ha, Masha isn't going to let her brother show off this time.

What a brave little bear she has become.

This time, they've done it.

Polar bears swim up to 45 miles at a time.

That's like swimming nonstop around Manhattan...twice.

Knut, however, is still afraid

to leave the shallow end of the pool.

This time, though, Thomas isn't letting him get away with it.

It's time for Knut to learn how to swim...

Even if the water is only 50 degrees.

It's never so bad once you're in.

[upbeat reggae music]

♪ ♪

- [speaking German]

- [speaking German]

♪ ♪

- Knut has earned his nap this time, for sure.

As Knut rests after a long day,

Maidu and her cubs are walking into danger.

It's a constant search for food

when you have to feed two growing cubs.

But Maidu needs to stay alert.

It's other polar bears she needs to worry about.

Male bears can weigh almost 2,000 pounds.

That's almost twice as much as Maidu.

If this bear is seeking a new mate,

he could be deadly for Lasse and Linn.

[Maidu growls]

But Maidu knows when to retreat.

She's no match for this great lonely roamer.

Thomas is taking Knut to see where he will live

until he is old enough to move in with other polar bears.

[tiger vocalizes]

Thomas knows that eventually, Knut will have a mate of his own

and will be happier living with his own kind,

even if that means

they will have to say good-bye to each other.

But for now, Thomas and Knut are inseparable.

Like all active youngsters,

Knut needs a hearty breakfast.

And he seems to enjoy it, whatever it is.

- It certainly seems to set him up for the day.

There are plenty of strange objects to investigate.

- Mm.

[speaking German]

- In the forest, Pasha and Masha have found a new challenge,

trying to unlock the secrets of this stream...

This time, with some success.

As usual, Masha is there for moral support.

So much for moral support.

Even though he's now nearly as big as Thomas,

there's still no better way for Knut to spend the day

than to take a nap with his foster parent.

The bond is as strong as ever.

[Knut vocalizing]

- [speaking German]

- ♪ You just mean so much to my heart, to my heart ♪

♪ ♪

♪ You're a wonder, a surprise ♪

♪ It's plain as day ♪

♪ Your face gives you away ♪

♪ You just mean so much to my heart, to my heart ♪

- It's finally time to bring the crisp autumn winds

to Belarus.

And Pasha and Masha are prepared with their thick winter coats.

They've hit the jackpot again.

This hive is full of their favorite treat.

Unfortunately, it's also full of its own private army.

I hope it's worth the trouble.

[bear groaning]

The Arctic is my playground.

I can paint the mountains with snow

and dance with the sea.

It may seem empty and quiet,

but the sea, not yet frozen,

is always full of surprises.

[seal squeaking]

This baby seal had better watch out.

Maidu and her boys are near

and will make a meal of him if they can.

But seals never stray far from an escape route.

And if they are quick, they won't be on the menu.

[seal squeaking]

[seal squeaks]

[Maidu groans]

Since I am enjoying the Arctic so much,

I thought I'd bring a little taste of the icy fall winds

to Belarus.

Masha and Pasha are going to love this.

[bear growling]

[bear growling]

Pasha and Masha aren't the only cubs tipping the scales.

Knut is already over 120 pounds.

- Thomas is proud

that Knut is getting more and more independent,

just like a polar bear should.

Today he's even getting his own sign at the zoo.

And Thomas is the first visitor.

He keeps a watchful eye as Knut explores his new home.

And he's relieved to see that Knut's settling in well.

- ♪ That's just what friends do ♪

♪ They're there when you need them ♪

- It's been quite a journey.

Knut's gone from a superstar cuddly cub

to a global symbol of our changing planet.

It's a timely and invaluable contribution.

- ♪ I think I'll just go to sleep now ♪

- I've brought the winter to Belarus.

And just as I hoped,

Pasha and Masha have found their den.

They will be safe here.

And they've even made peace with their neighbors.

[wolves growl]

For the first time,

I'm not worried about Pasha and Masha at all.

I'll find them again in the spring

to see what new adventures come their way.

And Lasse and Linn...

they've gone through the hard school of the Arctic

and have grown to be powerful fighters.

[bears growling]

[bears growling]

Soon they will become great lonely roamers themselves

and leave Maidu's side

but not just yet.

For now, they'll stay with her

and meet up with other polar bear families

who have journeyed here to hunt.

So long as I have the power to turn water into ice,

there will be polar bears.

But every year, I feel the Earth becoming warmer,

and this job gets a little more difficult.

Humans have transformed their world

but, in doing so, also the world around them.

But they do have Knut to remind them all

of what there is to lose if the ice melts.

And his story doesn't end here.

His future is bright.

He's touched the hearts of millions around the world.

Hopefully, through him, humans will learn

that if they can save one polar bear,

they can save his friends too.

All they need is Knut's fighting spirit.

- ♪ My boy, he takes me by the hand ♪

- You've come a long way, Knut.

I'll always be with you

and with every other being on this Earth.
