acts as a conduit to God,

so that he can hear our prayers.

I have the Bible,

because the word of God is
like poison to an evil spirit.

But while Father Lucas is
reading from the scriptures,

I will be searching through this book.

This book is the Catholic Church's

Encyclopedia of Demonology.

It's a highly guarded secret.

It's not reprinted,

it's handed down from
exorcist to exorcist,

and it is our most powerful
tool against Anna's tormentor.

- Encyclopedia of what?

- Demons. There are many.

The first class are the fallen angels.

They include Satan, and
his earliest followers.

Below them are the seven kings of hell.

One for each of the seven deadly sins.

And at their command,
are the legions of demons

who scratch and claw at
the weakest among us.

Their purpose is to try and tear us

farther and farther apart.

Farther from God's light.

It's one of these demons who
has succeeded with your wife.

But,

we can bring Anna back into God's light

with a single word.

- One word?

- The name of the demon.

Scripture teaches us
that to defeat our enemy,

we must first know its name.

- [David] You just say its name?

- The greatest power is
knowing your enemy's name.

It's like diagnosing a disease.

Now, an exorcism can be a long
process, it can take months.

- Months?
- Yes.

But tonight we focus on
learning the demon's name.

If we learn it tonight,
in this first session,

then we can figure out
how to best cast it out.

We can't defeat our enemy
without knowing who it is.
