A time when the world was in the throes
of the dark ages.

And it was indeed a dark time for the
populace of Europe.

War was common.

Famine and pestilence haunted the
people.

Ignorance and superstition abounded the
land.

Neighbor mistrusted neighbor and the
politics of the time was religion.

The Christian ethic warped and twisted
into an instrument of power and

corruption.

Enough to raise massive armies and
invade the peaceful regions of the

Mediterranean to spill the blood of the
infidels under the cross of Jesus.

Enough to conduct mass trials of
thousands of heretics who did not hold

current beliefs.

Enough to strike terror into the hearts
of a cowed population, keeping them

firmly beneath the thumb of tyranny,
preached as Christianity.

All was not complete bleakness, however.

Throughout the land, there were
minuscule havens of intellectual thought

intercourse. Martin Luther had nailed
his list of demands to the door of the

Roman church, and in England, Henry VIII
was busy divorcing wives, creating the

Anglican church, and lopping off the
heads of his adversaries with impunity.

And for a young girl who did not look
forward eagerly to 40 years of slavery

the wife of some ignorant peasant, There
was the nunnery.

The many convents of Europe offered
physical and emotional security, an

opportunity to work quietly and with
dignity in the service of the Heavenly

Father among the beautiful relics of the
Roman Church and the tranquility of

warm gardens.

All that the pretty maid was required to
do was to offer her life to the Church

as a bride of Christ.

A simple matter for some, more difficult
for others.

And there were those, of course, for
whom it was impossible.

Our story concerns the trials of one
such girl who strove mightily to

her natural urges and who was thwarted
at every turn by some impish inner self.

An alter ego, as it were, who lusted for
every pleasure, craved every delight.

and who made life generally miserable
for the tender child who consciously

wished only for the cross and a common
garden home.

At last, I found the inner peace that
I've been in search for so long.

And now I can go on doing my work.

Even if the daydreams continue, they
can't hurt anyone.

I can't remember exactly when it all
began.

I guess it's when I was an adolescent.

At first I was very guilty about the
dreams, but I couldn't help it.

They just kept happening, anywhere and
anytime.

The dreams were about myself and all the
other girls and boys in my school.

I was always naked, and the others would
play with my body, rubbing me and

putting things into me.

And I liked it, and that's why I felt
guilty.

Liking it, I mean.

Later on, I decided to devote my life to
the church, to become a nun.

And since I really never did anything
wrong, they welcomed me.

I thought it would be all over then, but
it started again, and worse than ever

before. The very first day at the
convent, I met another young novice who

occupied the cell next to mine.

And that night, when I was just about
asleep, the dream began.

It seemed that I was suddenly standing
in the open door of her room.

Staring at her as she said her evening
prayers.

Just staring.

happened again the very next day.

We had taken communion that morning, and
as I was going into my chores, my mind

regarding my awful dream that they might

stop.

I knew I needed help quickly because
funny things were happening to my body.

Every time a dream happened, I would
feel overwhelm and shudder and exploding

inside.

It felt very good, but somehow I thought
it was bad.

So I made up my mind to go to the priest
and confess my sins.

Father, I think I've sinned, and I want
your help and advice.

Yes, yes, child, go on.

Well, I've been having these daydreams,
and I can't seem to stop them, no matter

how hard I try.

I'm trying to be good, but I just can't
seem to help myself.

Yes, go on, my child.

Tell me about the dreams.

Well, they're erotic dreams, Father.

Hardly had I begun the prayer when it
started again.

I tried and I tried to force it from my
mind.

But to no avail.

It seemed as if doing penance wasn't
enough.

It was almost like if I wanted to be
punished.

As if I might feel good.

And then there were choices.

A few days later, while I was working in
the convent kitchen, I developed a

terrible headache, retired to my room,
and there I began to experience the most

frightening dream yet.

After the crucifixion, I was beside
myself.

I thought that I was doomed to hell and
the devil was surely inside of me.

I had almost made up my mind to leave
the order when a few nights later...

Somehow the last dream convinced me that
I was truly a bride of Christ.

I knew then I could never be happy
outside the church.

And so I applied for it and was accepted
into the order of the hermitage nuns,

those who work alone, away from all
human contact, alone except for the

and for the ultimate joy of knowing that
for Him and Him alone I do labor in the

soft warm earth.
