When we first came out to LA together,

we had no idea we were gonna start a YouTube channel.

I was a musician.

Rebecca was trying to be an actor...

(chuckles) Was an actor.

- We were hustling, okay?

Nonstop.

I mean, I was waitressing, doing background,

working lots of weird jobs.

- (sighs) So many weird jobs,

but for all the work we were putting into our careers,

and we've been doing that work a long time

since we first met in Chicago, nothing was happening.

- We were stuck.

- And I got tired waiting for someone to notice us.

So, I jumped over the gatekeepers

and went directly to you, the audience.

I'm gonna run a 10k today.

I'm scared outta my mind.

(laughs) I haven't run in a long time.

It wasn't easy.

Lots of people are trying to do what we did,

and at first, I didn't have Rebecca on board.

- I always wanted to be in front of the camera,

but I wasn't sure if I was
ready for something like this.

You know, something where there's no script,

where it's just me.

Plus, someone had to pay the bills.

After a lot of convincing

and a pandemic that kept us locked

in our apartment for a year and a half?

- Rebecca agreed to give it a shot since, you know,

there wasn't really anything else to do.

(Rebecca chuckles)

- All right. - I don't know what to do.

- All right, it's 2020.

It's a little after the moment, but let's see ya adapt.

I mean, look at this place.

So, we actually, we got it through an estate sale,

which meant that it actually kinda

came like partially furnished.

- Yeah, which is good and bad.

- But I mean, hey, a rug's a rug, right (laughs)?

Okay, let's head upstairs.

- Okay, so there's two bedrooms up here and-

- So, we might end up needing another one very soon.

So (laughs).

But this one... So anyway,

so we decided to make one of them our studio.

- This is where the magic happens.

Over here in the primary bedroom,

this is where things get a little interesting.

so there was a ton of stuff in here

and we were choosing what to keep, what to get rid of.

- And then we went into this little cubby thing.

- I've never seen that before.

And what do you make of that (chuckles)?

- Okay, well, there was a whole box of these VHS tapes.

- VHS tapes, that's right.

- And they all have these weird sort of cryptic labels.

- On the side of the box it says, Mr. Peek.

- Hm. - So, we didn't buy

this house from a Mr. Peek,

so, we couldn't resist. - Yeah.

- We tracked down one of...

Oh man, it's so heavy.

One of these bad boys.

But we also digitized all of these tapes

so that you can watch them too.

- So... Before we show

you the rest of that tape
that you saw at the beginning-

- Mr. Peek, whoever that is really

wants us to watch this one first.

- Yeah. - So, I think

and I've always regretted it.

I was worried about the digital traces

that filming would leave behind.

The cameras of today betray you.

They capture too much.

But a tape,

a tape is something I can hold in my hand.

It cannot act without you.

It is beholden to you.

And now, in the digital age,

there are too many pipes and wires and signals.

We were not meant to process

this much information to be seen

and perceived so often,

but in here with this,

we are safe in our closed loop,

and there's only us,

the ghosts in the tape,

and you.

The internet is nothing but an abyss of lies

and fun house mirrors.

And do not mistake my condemnation

for lack of understanding.

I know how to leverage the internet,

but you cannot trust anything you find or see there.

You never know who you're talking to

until they're right in front of you.

My mother taught me that.

- So, we're assuming that the man in this tape, Mr. Peek,

is actually Avery Duncan,

the previous owner of this house,

which again, we bought an estate sale as is.

- Which means that Avery Duncan is dead.

- Mm hm, and won't be bothered if we try

to figure out whatever it was he left behind.

- We are just as in the dark as all of you.

- Yeah, we haven't watched all the tapes yet,

so we have no idea what's coming.

We're watching them as we make these videos.

As we dig deeper into Mr. Peek,

we're gonna try something new.

We know that you Winterlings have been begging us

to try live streaming and we've been listening.

- So, (chuckles) tomorrow, starting at eight p.m. Pacific-

do our first official live-stream.

We're gonna watch the next tape with you all together.

to everyone who has tried to ID the woman in the video

and make sure she's safe.

I know the footage is really, really grainy,

and obviously if we think
anyone is in any sort of danger,

we will turn everything over
to the police immediately.

that we don't actually know if anything real

or dangerous or even illegal has happened.

and messed up if it is real.

the guy who used to own this house is dead and gone.

- We've got some important updates

on the Mr. Peek investigation.

- Since we have all the VHS tapes digitized,

we took a broad look at their organization

and realized we didn't
actually start at the beginning.

It looks like Mr. Peek goes through a cycle.

- Yeah, he's done this several times,

at least four different times
with four different women.

Each cycle ends the same way.

Mr. Peek appears to attack them

and we don't see them in any other tapes.

And then the next cycle seems to start

about 10 or so months later.

- Mr. Peek was doing this for awhile

and he had it down to a science.
