It's January 4th, 1992 today.

The state of the world's
environment is severely dramatic.

All the black spots on
this globe shows places

where there is de facto no more life.

The Chernobyl disaster
inspired us for this sketch.

It happened some 3 years
before we filmed that episode

and it really warned
humanity what could happen

if the techonology of splitting
atoms evades human control.

But we quickly forgot about that.

That's why we made that
funny sketch about Krško,

a power plant in Slovenia,
close to Croatia,

which was Yugoslavia's
only nuclear power plant.

Did you happen to see a girl?
She's 30 minutes late.

She has a yellow mask and
a big scab right here.

Our tolerance threshold keeps going down,

that's why one of the characters says.

“This isn't radioactive, it's
just a little radioactive.”

Basically, it's nuclear waste.

Nuclear waste that's being
inserted into weapons

so they have greater power of penetration.

It's also cost effective.

Nuclear waste storage is expensive,

so they put it in their weapons and
disperse it throughout the world.

The example of the Hadzici
inhabitants is the most dramatic.

According to scientific testing,
they've been exposed to radiation

2,000 times stronger than
the accepted amount.

All of the decaying products
of depleted uranium

are on the World Health Organization's

list of carcinogenic substances.

From 1995 to 2000, malignant
disease skyrocketed.

The population around Sarajevo
had four times as many

malignant illnesses as before.

This isn't radioactive, it's
just a little radioactive.

A special parliamentary committee
will be formed in Italy

to evaluate the health consequences
for Italian military personnel

in regards to NATO's use of
depleted uranium weapons

in Bosnia and Kosovo.

Italian Defense Minister
Mattarella reported

30 Italian military
personnel sick or dead –

21 who served in Bosnia
and Kosovo, 7 dead.

According to the Military
Observatory where I work,

and these are conservative
estimates, over 350 people died

and 7,500 became sick from being
exposed to depleted uranium.

Depleted uranium causes tumors,

and the time has come to state it clearly.

This is the conclusion of the
Parliamentary Commission's inquiry

on depleted uranium.

I was born in Bustranje village
in the Presevo municipality.

We were bombed with depleted uranium.

Two years ago, my mom died from cancer.

Same with my cousins, my
brother, who died a year ago.

In our area, from 1999 until today,

out of 161 who died, 80% died from cancer.

Before the bombing, this
was a healthy environment,

hardly anyone died from cancer,
we have no polluters here.

Now we have an epidemic of cancer deaths.

When the weapon carrying
depleted uranium explodes,

a large number of uranium
particles get dispersed

and those uranium
particles are very light,

wind can carry them across hundreds

or thousands of kilometers.

If that alpha particle
is lodged in your body,

it can penetrate a healthy cell and
turn it into a malignant cell.

Depleted uranium can
affect any human organ.

It can stay in the lungs
and cause lung cancer,

it can cause malignant
bone marrow disease.

It can cause malignant disease
in the digestive tract –

basically in any part of the body.

They used depleted uranium
bombs to destroy a TV tower,

which could've been
destroyed with any bomb.

Out of those eight workers,
seven died from cancer,

and the eighth has cancer.

There was lots of dust.

We were digging, creating holes

for the columns, adding concrete.

We inhaled the dust,
drank the water there,

there's a spring some 200 meters away.

All of it was bombed.
Eight of us were there.

Seven died, I'm the sole survivor.

I'm feeling the effects.

Sometimes I'm suffocating,
I had boils last year,

they appear up to my throat.

I'm scared.

I had to take loans to
pay for my treatment.

I have 3 kids.

In 1999, my youngest son was
6, my daughters 8 and 10.

It's not easy.

I'm struggling for my life.

Goran Mitic, my husband,
worked in the waterworks.

He went to the bombed TV tower
to transport the workers there.

Eight years after the bombing,
he started getting chest pains.

We went to a doctor, who
diagnosed lung cancer.

We fought, went to hospitals,
he had operations, chemo,

we prayed, did everything we
could, but with no avail.

He had an operation, but
he couldn't be saved.

When we went to the Belgrade hospital,

the doctors asked where
my husband was in 1999.

When we told them, they
just looked at each other

and knew what the cause was.

I was 38 years.

Three children, son was
9, one daughter was 7,

and the other was 5.

It was hard making ends meet.

Sometimes we'd be starving,

I used to eat a slice of bread
a day, so that he could eat.

I had only 40 kilos.

The poor guy never expressed his pain.

He didn't want to worry the
children, so he kept quiet.

The pains he felt were unbearable.

He wanted to bang his
head against the wall,

because he couldn't take the pain.

When my son heard that his dad had passed,

he wanted to break and burn
everything around him.

“How can I go on
without dad?”

I'm here, but it's not the same.

NATO took him, I told this to everyone.

I pray that NATO never returns.

If you could speak to your colleagues now,

what would you say to them?

This must never happen again.

These young people got married,
to spend their life together,

so that there may be more
of us in the future,

may we be prettier and happier.

Male sterility has doubled
these last years.

More and more young couples,
seemingly healthy men and women,

are unable to have kids.

The first Scientific Medical Study
of the effects of the NATO bombing

shows that among children
born around 1999,

there is an increase in malignant disease.

Especially leukemia, striking
children aged 5 to 9.

The number of malignant
blood and brain diseases

among children from 1999
increases each year.

An estimated 15 tons of
depleted uranium were dropped

on Serbia and Montenegro in 1999.

15 tons.

They bombed factories, electric plants,

where there's lots of polychlorobiphenyl,

a highly toxic compound
that causes cancer.

A litre of polychlorobiphenyl
contaminates a billion litres of water.

You also had pyralen and
various heavy metals.

What does bombing an oil
refinery in Novi Sad,

hundreds of kilometres from Kosovo,

and near the source of water for
the third largest city in Serbia,

have to do with protecting
Albanians from the terrible Serbs?

Nothing, of course.

60% of their targets were
civilian, not military.

They damaged our environment
by bombing targets

listed on public hazard maps.

Every country has hazard maps
to show which facilities

must not be targeted. They bombed
these facilities on purpose,

to see what will happen to
the surrounding population.

They basically turned our
country into an experiment.

One big experimental laboratory.

NATO's aggression in 1999 was genocidal.

Genetically modified organisms are created

by genetically manipulating
genes from one kind

and their insertion into another
kind – exclusively in laboratories.

These products can't be created naturally

with conventional breeding or
hybridization in agricultural institutes.

You can also genetically modify a tomato

by adding fish genes to get a
tomato with a harder skin,

that has a longer shelf live
than domestic tomatoes,

that is more easily transported
as it's less sensitive to impact.

The bad thing is that the
production methodology

used from 1996 to today,
so more than two decades,

is on the level of brain
surgery with a shovel.

The Monsanto Corporation, which
was recently acquired by Bayer,

claims that their new methodology

is 90% more safe than the previous one.

That means that all of humanity,

whoever had any contact with GMO,

which includes millions of consumers,
were essentially guinea pigs

for two decades of a live experiment

with completely unchecked technology.

Would you agree to be the pilot of a plane

in which you don't know how
90% of its parts function?

In those two decades,
poverty didn't go down.

In fact, it's increasing every year.

They were in debt to such an extent,

there was no way the yield
and profits could cover it.

Taking into consideration
Indian tradition,

thousands of Indian
farmers committed suicide

in order for their families
to keep their farms

and earn a living.

According to a Serbian law on
GMO from 2009, the import,

production and transport of GMO

and GMO products is forbidden.

Like with other laws, some
are breaking this one.

Mostly when it comes to the
import of genetically modified

soy seeds and the illegal
sowing of those seeds.

There are 5,000 hectares with
an average yield of 3 tons,

which is 15,000 tons overall.

Divide that by 20 tons and you
get a convoy of 750 trucks

full of genetically modified soy
that are roaming Serbia's roads

with nobody controlling
or sanctioning them.

The first level of quality, the best one,

is for consumers and markets
in the old 15 EU states.

The second level of quality
is for the EU member states

that joined from 2004 to today.

And the third level is
for the rest, like us.

The tap water is not drinkable

due to higher levels of
arsenic than those allowed.

Water analysis again showed it's
not potable due to bacteria.

There are no reasons to be afraid.

Children can safely drink the water.

The situation is serious,
the water is polluted.

You can't drink this water.

Out of twelve samples,
only three are drinkable.

We're proud of our water.

It's water that we alone use,
as it's of a better quality...

The Grozdenovic family in Radovnica

waters their 15 acre farm with
water from the nearby river.

We need it to survive,
see how we're watering?

If you take our water,
how will we survive?

The construction of a
small hydro power plant

began in Radovnica, and in just two days,

the riverbed was destroyed.

Small hydro power plants
create electric energy

and in order to do that, they need water,

rivers to pass through them.

We can't imagine life without water.

This is insane.

Now someone wants to take our river.

They're really heartless.

Not all green energy is green.

The way in which some
projects are implemented

and developed can be wrong

and actually do more harm than good.

What we're fighting is the biggest evil,

and that's small hydro power
plant with derivation.

That's when you pack up the
river into a tube and kill it.

First you level it, kill
everything that lives in it

and the river is gone forever.

And you get rich,

because you get subsidies for
producing “renewable energy”,

so the public pays you for
12 years to get rich,

while we lose our water.

There were two rivers on
the foothills of Kopaonik,

Samokovka and Josanica river.

In 2010, someone decided to build
17 mini hydro power plants

on those two rivers in a row,
in the Kopaonik National Park.

17 of them!

The result was that these
two rivers vanished.

They're gone.

When this happens, people
who've been living there

for generations have to move.

For the first time in its history,

Serbia will have environmental refugees,

if they realize their
monstrous plan of building

850 mini hydro power plants, as planned.

We won't need a war to drive us out.

They're planning 3,500 mini hydro
power plants in the Balkans.

Imagine what'll happen
if they're all built.

We'd have a million refugees, the
region would become a desert

and we'd be left without water.

If Serbia builds 856 small
hydro power plants,

we'll get 2-3% of the
energy we need per year,

while we'll destroy all
our mountain rivers.

So, is it really about electricity

or perhaps one day, in complete
secrecy, our parliament,

or whoever it is that
controls our country,

will privatize our water.

Like they did in Bolivia.

An investor in the Serbian
village of Rakita

took out a mortgage on the river there.

For days, we're living in a
fog, coughing, suffocating.

Worldwide air quality
measurements in the last 48 hours

showed several cities in
Serbia as being more polluted

than Beijing, with a
multi-million population.

You go outside to get a
breath of fresh air –

and you can't breathe.

Aside from your airways,

air pollution negatively
affects your cardiovascular

and nervous system.

On January 31,

Belgrade was the most
polluted city in the world.

The citizens have learned to live
with pollution in this city.

This house used to be white,

but the dust from the steal factory
completely “painted” it red.

This is Chernobyl, this is insane.

The sky above Obrenovac
was again covered by ash

carried by the wind from
the power plant's dump.

We used to blame our industry for that,

but after numerous
factories stopped working

or decreased production capacities,

the pollution remained or even increased.

Heating with wood or coal is the
main cause of lower air quality.

30% of air pollution comes
from motor vehicles.

What did he say?

97% of scientists in the field of
geophysics, researching planet Earth

through chemistry, physics,
geology, and so on –

97% of them agree that
climate change is caused

by human activity over the last century,

by our uncontrolled
greenhouse gas emissions

through the burning of fossil
fuels, from which we produced

cheap energy all these decades.

But wait, this is a matter of
debate, it's just a theory.

No, there is no debate about
this in the scientific world,

none whatsoever.

All the data we have today proves

what theory predicted some 50 years ago.

In the future, in a scenario
where climate change

warms up our planet by 4
degrees, we risk having tens,

if not hundreds of millions
of climate refugees

simply because the global sea
levels will rise by 1 meter.

Those floods were something
that has absolutely

never happened in Serbia before.

Climate change causes
flooding and severe rainfall

because the hotter the air, the
more water vapor it can store.

If you have more vapor in the
air, this automatically means

that the rain that's discharged
will be heavier than in the past.

This is our shame.

This is a sad warning.

The state of our environment is very bad.

One simply doesn't know how to appeal

and approach with this
issue to average citizens

in hopes of waking them up.

Does my expression tell you
how bad this all looks?

There are garbage dumps close
to rivers, like this raft here.

Trucks bring in loads and
loads of garbage here

and when the water level rises,

the river carries away all
the garbage downstream.

In front of every big store you have
loads of paper, bags, plastic waste.

We're walking all over
it, it's accumulating.

Mini-garbage dumps are created all
around buildings and passages.

We're in the worst phase,

because people are getting used
to the garbage around them.

During Turkish times, it was
a sort of rebellious act

against the occupier to
throw all your garbage

from your property onto the street,

so that the occupier will deal with it.

Solving this doesn't require
a change in government,

but an awakening of awareness
of the people who live here.

What happened was that whatever
was left of our natural

and national resources was
sold off at bargain prices,

so that the people who bought them would,

in a more sophisticated way
than the NATO bombing,

occupy this country.

of committing fraud.

Miskovic's net worth is
estimated at 3 billion dollars,

and he's on Forbes' list of
the world's richest people.

Miroslav Miskovic amassed his wealth

during Slobodan Milosevic's
rule in the 1990s,

and increased his wealth after
the revolution in 2000.

However, he was never tried
for any of his wrongdoings

during that time.

The credit for this goes
to Aleksandar Vucic.

Aleksandar Vucic is insanely brave.

The media writes that
Vucic's fight against crime

is resolute and direct.

During his arrest, “Delta”
owner Miskovic said

that Vucic won't survive

We will not give our rivers away!

Defend your rivers, rivers are life!

Water is life!

What can we do without
water, Mr. Vucic?

Everything that's written in the laws,

in their little building
permits, is irrelevant to us.

We constantly have people on
the field for 2 years now.

Wherever an excavator shows up
to push our river into a tunnel,

we physically prevent it from doing so.

There were more police forces

than there are citizens
in our municipality.

When someone comes and says.

“I have a permit, and I'll push
your river into a tunnel”,

we simply take our shovels and pickaxes,

200 of us go to the place where the
excavator buried this tiny river,

this little stream, and we put the
river back where it used to flow.

Then we get sued and end up in courts,

they threaten us, whatever.

That's how we function.

We are our country.

And in the end, the people
have the final word.

In 2018, in the city of Pirot,
the largest ecological protest

in the history of our country took place.

4,000 people said “No” to the lunatics.

In defending the rivers in your area,

you're defending all the rivers in Serbia.

The investors can't build anything that
the local population doesn't want.

They will never be able
to touch another river.

They won't get one drop out of them.

We will fight to the death!

We are ready to give up our lives,
but we're not giving up our rivers.

We defended the Topli Dol
river, the Visocica river,

the Rudina river, the Jelovica river.

Those are all rivers on
Stara Planina mountain.

It's clear that the Constituion
and Law were violated.

Natural wealth and water are
protected under the Constitution

and several laws, nobody can
take that away from us.

Victory for those fighting to save
our environment on Stara Planina.

The Serbian Supreme Court
stopped the building

of small hydro power plants.

We've already won, Boris.

We've already defended our
rivers, everyone knows this.

When the socialist bloc
collapsed in the early 1990s,

generally in the 1990s,

our agriculture was left without
virtually any resources.

Our country couldn't
import any more machinery

for farming nor any irrigation systems.

and we shouldn't build
any more infrastructure

that supports the production
of fossil fuel energy.

The solar panel industry –
producing energy from the sun,

and wind generators –
producing energy from wind,

are exponentially growing and
if we're among the first

to join the boom, we'll have
an advantage in the future.

Green energy is actually an
opportunity for new jobs.

The Kolubara coal mine has
produced one million tons of coal

more than projected. A
million tons of coal.

This is a big deal and I think
this is the most important thing.

All those populist parties,
when they do get to a situation

where they can rule, they realize that

there's nothing more perfect
than this current system,

which, in essence, helped us get to power.

And then they themselves
become a part of the system,

because nothing else exists.

criminals, above all, Bill Clinton,

Tony Blair,

Gerhard Schroeder,

they'll all be tried at some new
Nuremberg for all the crimes

they committed against the
Serbian people and our country.

forces began strikes

against military targets in Yugoslavia.

friend, Aleksandar.

I don't think this is a war between
a small country in the Balkans,

proud of its history, and
the greatest world power

the planet has ever seen.

I think this is a war between two
different philosophies on life.

A war between a greedy,
aggressive philosophy of life,

an unhappy society in
which people solely focus

on chasing profits, which
gives them little time

to watch a good film or read a great book;

and a completely opposite philosophy

in which people want to live
in harmony with nature,

not against it.

As Pavle's friends and as young people,

we've gathered here to
show our solidarity,

as he's lost his right to a normal life!

So, Vucic is arresting children.
