every interaction is being evaluated,

every moment is a test.

If I scream at her and say,

then she's gonna write that
I'm combative and aggressive.

If I just stand here mute,

she's gonna write that I'm confused

and I don't know where I am.

So I just look up and smile and say,

"I am...

I'm at Denver Plymouth Central Hospital,

in the Psychiatric Ward.

The date is March 16th,

and I'm here because..."

Will that work for you?

- That's great, Jack.

You're in Ward A,

which is for more lucid patients;

we also have Ward B,

which is for patients
with more severe symptoms

or pathologies.

You may sometimes see patients from Ward B

as they transition back to better health

and are permitted social
interactions with Ward A.

- I can't wait.

Listen, we're going to have
a morning mindfulness session

here in a few minutes,

but, first, I'm going to
need to take a few things:

keys, wallet, any drawstrings,

personal electronic devices,

about eight months ago,

with your mental health.

Now, each patient has
different set of circumstances

and challenges,

but there's also many things
that you all have in common.

I'm here to help you with
the tools that you can use

to improve how you cope
with those challenges

when they arise.

Now the good news is, if you
really focus on these tools,

I promise you, things will get better.

Now, today, we're doing
a small art project;

creative activities like this,

when done in a focused and mindful way,

can really help you quiet the mind

and reduce the chatter and noise

that often accompany
anxiety and depression

and other mental health disorders.

the kind of tool you can use

to cultivate positive emotions,

and, and a great way to
express negative ones.

We're hoping that when you leave here,

you'll continue the habits

that you've learned and practiced here.

Every day, you should establish
a practice of mindfulness,

meditations, some
expressions of creativity,

and, of course, regular exercise.

what do you do these days?

- Well, I'm not sure how it relates

to what you did in the FORTRAN days-

Anyway, I do this thing
called outcome-based coding.

It basically acts like a bridge

connecting Large Language
Models to code libraries,

so you, you can have the whole
thing compile and execute

an entire routine just by verbal command.

- [Old Bill] Hmm.

- You tell the program what you wanna do,

and it achieves the outcome.

- Hmm, outcome-based coding, huh?

Sounds fancy.

So how's that going for you?

- Eh, about this good.

(Old Bill laughing)

- (chuckles) Oh.

Oh gosh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-

- So, so, so what's the problem?

- I don't know.

I mean, I think the thing basically works,

I've tested it a bunch of different ways.

The only thing I can come up with

is that maybe it's running
up against encryption

that it can't defeat;

like, the program knows
what it's trying to do,

but then it ends up running
into these digital locks

that it just can't solve.

- Hmm, yeah, I know all about that.

I spent a lot of time on SSL
encryption back in the '80s:

backbone of modern computing.

We put together digital
locks so mathematically dense

that they can't be
unlocked without the key,

you know, that's the idea anyway.

- I mean, it's not just an idea,

it's how the whole internet works,

it's how like almost
everything works these days.

- Well, that's how it works.

No question, but, uh, it'd
be a pretty neat trick

if you could get around it.
