that everything started.

The house felt different.

Right from the start,
I felt that the house

was hiding from me.

They're not expecting to
end up embroiled in

a turf war
with the other side.

It was like
a death stare.

It was terrifying.

I think this might be a clue
into who this person might be.

Just like
a jigsaw puzzle--

it all clicked together
and it made sense.

That's enough of this.

And I got mad.

Things start to progress...
and fast.

This entity
cut him up.

He's being manipulated
by something

that has a far more
sinister purpose.

It's gonna continue
to get worse

as long as the spirit
is in the house.

Dead. Done.

Dead silence.

All hell broke loose.

New Hampshire, in general,
is a beautiful part

of the country.

Before I moved to Derry,

I lived in Pelham,
New Hampshire,

and I lived in
a smaller house.

I was there for 20 years.

During the pandemic,
when we were all home,

we realized that we were all on
top of each other.

The name of this house is
the Alanson Tucker Mansion.

I did not know any history
about this house.

I didn't know it was called
the Alanson Tucker House

when I was purchasing it.

My first impression of this
house was, it was overwhelming.

My husband was the one that
found the house.

He was very excited about it,
and he wanted to show it to me.

So, when I first saw it,
I thought, wow--

I said, "This is more than
I planned on...

...getting into."

What'd I say?
Beautiful.

This case of Colleen
and Colin Costello

is really interesting to me,

because here they are,
moving into this very old

building, and you know that
really speaks to the fact that

there's such a layered history
here, and also that spirits

really feel attached to
specific places.

The case of Colleen Costello
reminds me of the old saying

that there's no place
like home.

When she and her husband move
into the home of their dreams,

they're not expecting to end up
embroiled in a turf war with

the other side.

When this opportunity arose to
own like a historical house

like this, it was kind of
exciting in one way,

but at the same time,
kind of,

I don't know if
I want to do this.

I walked around the house...

as he's like amazed by
everything and saying,

"Oh my God, don't you
feel how amazing"-- you know.

I was surprised
because I normally pick up

an energy in
any home.

It doesn't have to be
an old home, but in any home,

when I walk into it, you know,
good, bad energy, whatever.

There was no energy
in the home.

I didn't feel anything.

And it was so bizarre

because being over
a 200-year-old house,

there'd have to be some
energy in there.

Nothing.

Right from the start, I felt
the house was hiding from me.

We moved in, and after a day
of unpacking,

we went to bed.

About 4:30 in the morning,
we started to hear all this

clattering and banging
downstairs in the kitchen.

We could hear it from the room.

We were like,
we just moved in here.

Is there somebody downstairs?
Is somebody broken in?

So we came out here to--

to look and to listen to
the noise that was coming from

the kitchen downstairs.

As quickly as it started,
it just stopped like that--

boom, everything just
stopped dead.

Done. Dead silence.

We did go down,
and there was nothing.

Nothing was out of place.

So that was the first night.

My neighbor next door has lived
here for 50 years.

She introduced herself

and had me over
to her house for tea...

and walked me all the way down
to a pond that was at the back

of her garden, which I didn't
even know was there

because you can't actually
see it from my house.

When she showed me the pond,
I immediately...

just had this really awful
feeling that there was

something awful happened there.

I couldn't explain it,
but it was just a really

bad feeling
around the pond area.

Things take a special turn
when Colleen begins to

hear voices in her head
and specifically,

a woman's voice.

I was in my living room
and I was just sitting.

I was just sitting in
my living room.

I have something
I need to tell you.

And I heard
this voice.

And she said to me,
"I need to talk to you.

I have something
I need to tell you."

I was a patient here.

She was a patient here
in this house.

And her name was Betsy.

And that she said too much,
that she talked too much.

They got rid of me.

And that they disposed of her...

In the pond.

...in the pond.

I found out the house was
a care home, again,

from my neighbor next door.

She filled me in on a lot of
history of the house

that I wasn't even aware of.

I was told that it was licensed
for, I think, 12 patients,

and it had 42 patients.

They shouldn't have had that
many people in this house,

because there wasn't enough
room for that many patients.

When she told me that,
I was like,

"Oh my God, that's why

I felt that way
when I was at the pond."

It was like a jigsaw puzzle--

it all clicked together,
and it made sense.

We make the discovery that
Colleen's home was once

a nursing home.

And conditions in that home
were not necessarily the best.

The nursing home was filled
over capacity.

It was packed.
It was crowded.

There weren't enough staff to
take care of the needs of

everybody who lived there.

Conditions there
were miserable.

We had just
gotten into bed.

And I-- my side of the bed was
towards the door that goes into

the nanny's room.

I never liked that side
of the room.

I felt like somebody was
gonna come through that door.

We're sleeping
back to back.

In the middle of the night, um,

I felt like I was being pushed
from behind.

Oomph!

I'm being pushed towards
the edge of the bed.

So I'm literally being shoved.

Oomph!

All of a sudden, I realized
I'm gonna fall out of the bed.

So then,
I took my hand and I went,

what the heck?
I said, "What the hell are
you doing?"

And I put my hand
back and I went, "Stop!"

"Will you stop shoving me?!"

And I put my hand back
to say, "Stop."

And as I did that,

that's when I realized there
was no one there.

There was a gap of that much
between him and me.

And he was way over here.

And that's when I realized that
he wasn't the one shoving me

out of the bed.

Ha...

Ha...

I went, "Oh my God!"

I woke my husband up
and he goes, "What's wrong?"

And I was like, "I thought
you were shoving me
out of the bed."

And he goes, "No."
He goes, "I haven't been--

I haven't gone near you."

So I was absolutely terrified.

That was very, very scary
for me.

Colleen is kicked out of
her own bed, which makes me

infer on the history,
the fact that this was

a residential home that was at
overcapacity, which,

you know, you could have
spirits that didn't have beds.

They didn't have space.

It's entirely possible that
the shoving Colleen experienced

in the bed was a spirit from
the nursing home.

We know that this
was overcrowded.

We can reasonably believe that
people were crammed into beds,

multiple people into one bed.

Pushing and shoving would be
something I would expect

under those circumstances.

But then a clue comes to light
that reveals this might all have

been triggered before
they even moved in.

Right before we moved in,
my husband had a dream.

The dream he had was of
the basement of this house.

In the corner
of the basement...

...there was this dark shadow.

It was a girl,
and she was crying.

What's wrong?
What's wrong?

Are you OK?

No.

What's wrong?

I need to go upstairs.

And she said,
"I need to go upstairs."

I want to go upstairs.

I said, "I hope you said no."

And he said, "Oh, yeah,
yeah, of course I did.

Of course I said no."

I want to go upstairs.

Only to find out later on,

after we moved in and things
started escalating

in the house,
that he actually said yes.

It's my belief that what
happened to Colleen's husband

wasn't a simple dream at all.

This was a spirit visitation,
that he was in communication

with the spirit of a female in
the basement of the house.

You know, there's a woman here
that's seeking permission from

the man of the house.

Why isn't this spirit asking
Colleen for permission?

So I think this might be a clue
into who this person might be.

Here's the sinister part.

Colin has lied to his wife
about what he said.

And it's entirely possible
he did this

just because, hey,
it's just a dream,

I don't want to make
a big deal out of it.

But it's also possible that
he's being manipulated to not

tell the truth by something
that has a far more

sinister purpose in mind.

Let's go upstairs.

I believe that he let up
a negative spirit,

something that might have been
banished down

into the basement.
- Are you ready?

Are you coming?

We were getting ready for bed,
and obviously there was already

a lot of really negative energy
in the room, and we were

feeling really nervous.

Colin.

Colin.

Colin.

Colleen...

It just-- that's my arm.

We had just gotten into bed,
and he said,

"I just felt a hand on my
shoulder and it go down my arm."

Colleen.

And when I turned over
towards him...

There was this woman just
standing there, like,

right behind him--
now he couldn't see

because he was turned
towards me.

So she was standing behind
his back, standing right there

at the side of the bed.

Dark hair up in a bun,
high neck blouse,

and a long skirt, and she just
was staring at me like this.

It was like a death stare.
Like, it was terrifying.

Absolutely terrifying.

What was that?
What was that?

I never told him I saw her,

because he was already
scared enough.

So I didn't, I didn't tell him.

And then we started sleeping in
the living room on the couch.

I did not want to be in
the bedroom at all.

After the spirit visitation,
when Colin inadvisably gave

his permission for the female
spirit to come upstairs,

she's now taking full advantage
of that permission.

It feels like this spirit is
really trying to manipulate

and target, specifically, Colin
as a way maybe to create

separation or divide or maybe
even quarreling between

husband and wife,
between Colin and Colleen.

So this could be a revealing
piece of information as to

who this person is.

It was terrifying to see her.

But then I started to hear her.

The tone in her voice was
definitely not

friendly or sweet.

I had no problem making
the connection between

the voice and who I saw.
I knew that was her.

When I would be coming back in
the house and I would come in

the front door and I'd have
my grocery shopping

or whatever...

Welcome back.

I don't want you here.

The minute I walked in
the door, she'd be like,

ready for me.

Go hang yourself in the attic.

She would say things like,
"Why don't you go hang yourself

in the attic?"

And it was so...

awful.

The energy got so bad
in the house,

it affected me mainly.

It decided then to just
focus on me, um,

and constantly started kind of
harassing me.

I heard the name Liza--
"I'm Liza."

- That's when
she told me who she was.
- Liza...

Liza...

I started to get
physically sick.

I was constantly nauseous,
pounding headaches.

The minute I'd walk into
the house, my left ear would

start ringing really,
really badly.

I went to the doctor
and the doctor was like,

"There's nothing wrong
with your ear."

She's getting
increasingly sick.

And when she goes to the doctor
to try and get a diagnosis,

the best they can do is shrug
their shoulders and say,

"We can't find anything
wrong with you."

It's because the problem
isn't a medical one.

It's a paranormal one.

The negative energy would just
like sit on my chest.

Like I would wake up
and it was just like

this heavy darkness
around me all the time.

I just couldn't get away
from it.

The only place I felt safe in
the house was in the kitchen,

where I felt like I belonged,
like was part of the staff.

So I never felt like
I was the lady of the house.

Whereas my husband felt like
he was the man of the house.

He kind of like almost became
obsessed with the house.

My husband and I were not
seeing eye-to-eye.

Something worth noting
is the fact that

Colin and Colleen,
they had different feelings

when they came
into the house.

It wasn't really special
to her.

Colin, on the other hand,
he felt really enamored

by the space.

So, you know, I'm really
interested in the difference in

those energies, and it might
speak to the fact that,

you know, there's a spirit here
that might also feel enamored

with this house.

We were fighting all the time.

He couldn't understand why
I'm sick all the time.

...wouldn't agree
to buy this house!

I wanted to sell the house.

I was like, "I don't want to be
here anymore."

He's like, "There's no way.
We're not selling this house."

She's everywhere!

- It's all in your mind.
You're going crazy.
- It's not!

You should get some help.

He wasn't hearing her,

so he didn't believe
she was taunting me.

- Who's "she"?
- She's there, she's there!

- Where? OK--
- This is ridiculous.

I'm finished.
I'm out of here.

You're not the lady
of the house.

She'd say, "You're not the lady
of the house."

She was pulling
my husband in

and trying to
push me out.

You'll never be
the lady of the house.

he's all mine.

Our relationship was affected.

We were fighting all the time.

It was like she wanted to take
my place beside my husband.

It then reached a point where
it got worse for me--

accelerated, and got
significantly worse.

At this point, it actually
really doesn't point to

the spirits being from this era
of the house where there was

a nursing home because it feels
really intimate that this

person wants to be in
their room or in their bed.

I couldn't eat.
I couldn't sleep.

I lost a ton of weight.
I was so sick.

But it was completely from
the energy in the house here.

And constantly having her,
like, harass me all the time

with bad language
and threatening me.

I'd reached a point where
I was so sick,

I could barely
stand up.

My husband, he's like, "You need
to go to the hospital."

And I was like "I can't go
to the hospital again,"
because every time

I went to the hospital,
to the emergency room,

they sent me home and said,
"You're fine."

So then finally he was like,
"It's the house.

I can't deal with
this anymore."

So he just decided to
call the church.

My husband brought in a priest.
He came out that night.

He came-- literally came out
an hour later.

Oh great, thanks for coming.

Please come in,
please come in.

You're welcome, my son.

This is my wife, Colleen.

It's so nice to
see you, Father.

Nice to meet you--

He actually gave me
a special blessing.

In the name of the father...

OK.

He blessed the whole house.

He went into every single
corner, every room,

every closet, everything.
He blessed everything.

I bless...
in the name of the Father,

and the Son, let us pray.

Be gone!

After he left,

energy in the house--
boom, changed completely.

I was fine.

I was fine.
The house was fine.

The energy, like,
completely changed.

I eventually found out that
Alanson Tucker's wife's name

was Eliza Tucker.

Therefore, I assume that that
could have possibly been

his wife, the spirit
of his wife.

Eliza wanted revenge.

She wanted to be
the lady of the house.

She didn't want any other lady
of the house here.

You can't explain to anybody
until you go through

it yourself.
It is terrifying.

What do we do when we go into
a new place?

What is the ethics spiritually
to find rapport with Spirit

or to help them move on?

And in the Costello case,
this ceremony helped them be

rid of the spirit,
that the spirit,

you know, either moved away
or moved on.

You want to do that so that
you can either put an end to

whatever is happening or you
can find a way to live

harmoniously with the spirit.

To be terrified to come home
to your own home, or sleep in

your own bed, or go into
your own bedroom, or walk around

your house and constantly feel
threatened by something

you can't see is
absolutely terrifying.

Some time has passed now,

and it seems the activity has
quieted down.

It felt much, much better.

My family still lives
in the house.

It's our home.

We lived in Raleigh,
North Carolina.

I wanted to surprise my wife
for Christmas

by building us a house.

So we picked this lot
and had the house built.

It took about six months.

It was a two-story house,

sitting up on a little hill
over a creek.

We had this huge oak tree
in the yard.

It was our first home and
we were really excited about it.

It was a perfect place to
raise a family.

Hey! You scared me.

We moved in and everything
was peaceful...

...until all hell broke loose.

I'm investigating the case of
Michael Nesbitt, whose story

culminates on Halloween night,
the night when it's said that

the veil between the realms of
the living and the dead is

at its thinnest.

Michael's about to have
his own encounter

with something
otherworldly.

What I think about
the Michael Nesbitt case,

immediately, messy.
There's a lot happening.

I thought, move out.
Leave now.

I remember the exact moment
that everything started,

the very beginning of it.

We'd been living in the house
for several years.

It was October,
so it was Halloween.

All the children were in bed.

Michael!

This, again?
You said you were gonna do
the dishes!

What do you need?

My wife and I were
having an argument.

We heard this huge crash.

My first thought was the baby
fell out of the bed,

so we ran upstairs.

Go, go, go.

So when I got upstairs,
I heard running.

But they were all asleep.

So we thought, well, maybe it
was my oldest son and maybe

he was listening
to our argument.

He ran down the hall thinking
he might get in trouble.

Mike,
what the hell was that?

His pulse was down.
He was completely calm.

He was asleep.
It wasn't him.

So we were completely baffled.

There's no reason to suspect
a paranormal explanation

at this point.

Sometimes a thud is
just a thud.

It could be
the air conditioning.

It could be an open window.

It could be,
unfortunately, rats.

It could be a lot of
different things.

It's easy to write this
particular incident off

as a coincidence.

However, things start
to progress.

And fast.

That kind of thing would
happen pretty regularly.

You could hear
these footsteps...

pacing back and forth.

The footsteps were...

all the time.
It was all the time.

The first paranormal phenomenon
we encounter in this case is

the sound of footsteps pacing
back and forth.

And this is very common,
especially in

residual hauntings.

It's essentially
a paranormal recording.

The idea that a regular
activity that took place over

and over again somehow imprints
itself on the environment,

and we're able to hear that
replayed over and over again

many years in the future.

The repeating footsteps
reminded me of something

I did research on.

Not that far from
Michael Nesbitt's house,

there's a place called
Mordecai Manor.

And a lot of people say that
they see a woman in

19th-century garb...

pacing, playing the piano.

Very similar to what is going
on in Michael Nesbitt's case.

So I wonder if there is
a spirit in his house playing

out their daily life
on a loop.

So I just I got home from
my day and I thought I saw

my five-year-old son
sneak behind the door

to play a trick
on me.

Buddy?
Is that you?

So, I decided I was gonna play
a trick on him.

So I tiptoed down the hall...

I came up to the door.

And I was gonna yell
"boo" at him.

And to this day, I'll never
forget reaching out,

reaching out...

to the doorknob...

And then I just
yanked it back.

And there's nobody there.

It looked just like my son.

Out of the corner of my eye,
I could have sworn that

that was my child.

I got this chills,
and my hair's standing up.

Alarm bells are going off that
there's something bad.

Something's wrong.

There are a couple
possibilities as to what's

happening here, and one is that
spirits have the ability to

manifest in whatever way
they would like to.

What's concerning in Michael's
case is that it's appearing

as his son.

What this might mean is that
it's trying to worm its way

into his confidence
for reasons of its own.

My second theory
comes from research into

historic happenings
in the local area.

In 1958, there was
a tragic orphanage fire...

...in which a number of children
lost their lives.

I'm starting to wonder whether
this spirit could be wandering

the vicinity, has gone into
Michael's home, and is playing

mischievous pranks on him for
its own amusement.

The house felt different.

I mean, it felt...

different.

It felt like, heavy,
or depressing.

There was just something about
the house that just

wasn't the same.

People would see things.

Everybody
in the house experienced

something at some point.

My sons came up to me
and they said, "We saw eyes."

And, you know, they were so
young that they couldn't

explain it well.
They just said, "We saw eyes."

My wife got
progressively

more angry the longer
we were in that house.

...to sell.
I am so tired of all this--

There were times
where it just didn't seem like

a normal anger.

We had a lot of stressors on
the marriage, but this

didn't help.
It didn't help at all.

As this case progresses,
it seems less likely

that it would be the theory of
a child from the fire that

happened in 1958.

Because these attacks seem
directed to Michael

and his family.

It's interesting to me that
the haunting took place not as

soon as Michael
and his family moved in,

but some
years afterwards.

And we're pinpointing the fact
that stresses

in their marriage,
in their relationship,

are starting to amp up.

I'm not shocked to see them
fighting constantly.

It's going to continue to get
worse as long as the spirit is

in the house.

What's wrong?

I came home from work...

What happened?

...and our oldest had
had an incident.

He got up,
took a shower...

- What happened?
- I don't know!

...and he had
scratches all over his body.

Look at me.
Look at me.

- What happened?
- Is it OK?

Hey,
what's going on?

The scratches were deep enough
to draw blood.

But he had probably
over 20 cuts on him.

And they were very
unusual looking.

I have really thick skin.
I'm bleeding, and it hurts--

He had one directly across
his throat, like it was

like someone slicing his neck.

The only explanation I have is
that this entity...

cut him up.

I don't know.
What is this?

Buddy, I'm so sorry.

We now know this is no
residual haunting at all.

This house! This house!

It's cursed!

His son is being specifically
targeted, and there's been

an escalation from
the emotional domain

to physical.
Blood has literally been shed.

As a researcher,
I don't see that too often,

scratches around someone's
neck, especially a child.

It's an act of intimidation.
It's an act of aggression.

Usually, that is when people
want to get a priest

or they need more paranormal
researchers to come out,

because this is something that
wants to let you know that

they are in charge.

I don't know why it cut him up,
but I said, "That's enough.

That's enough of this."

And I got mad.

I think that's the first time
we called the church.

We had the priest come
in three times

and bless that house.

Three times.

Give us this day,
our daily bread.

And forgive our trespasses,

as we forgive those
who trespass against us.

If we had somebody
come in to bless the house,

we'd get no activity...

for about six months or so.

And then it would always just
start easing back in,

just start easing back in.

Plan B should never be Plan
A done harder, and Michael has

tried three times bringing in
a priest to remove the entity

from the house, all of it
without any success.

It hurts, and--

A spirit's values and belief
system will carry through

with them into the afterlife.

You have to remember that
spirits will have the same

personality that they had when
they were here in the physical,

and so priests may not
always work.

One night, while everybody was
sleeping, I'm standing there at

the kitchen sink,

and then all of a sudden...

I just had this feeling,
something was right behind me.

All the hairs on my body
stood up.

Like it was static electricity.

That's when it went
from as big as the wall

down into nothing and just
disappeared in the corner.

It just moved right
into the corner.

And I'm gonna look into
the people, I'm gonna look

into the history, and I'm
gonna look into the property

itself in my attempts to
find an answer.

The key to figuring out
who this entity is

is what triggered it?

Eventually, after all this
activity had happened,

the theory I came up with

and what hit--
what hit on me the most

was I'd been watching
this program...

and they were having
this series

of these very
haunted places.

On this particular episode,
they were in this castle in

the UK somewhere.

And at the beginning
of the show...

...they did this Celtic ritual
to open a portal

to try to get more activity in
this place.

But they ended the show without
closing the portal.

I believe that that TV program
opened a portal,

and something came through.

I've looked at the aspects of
Michael's case carefully,

and while I do think
it's interesting that

he watched on TV some kind of
ritual, an incantation being

performed, I don't know that
that has actually conjured

something into
his physical environment.

I feel that his property may
have already been haunted.

Maybe the program he was
watching, he may have been in

a little bit of a meditation
and kind of hypnotized.

Because I do believe that
something happened to him that

night that would have triggered
all the paranormal activity

in his house.

I tried to research into what
was there beforehand.

Typically in this area, most of
the subdivisions,

they'll buy up an old farm
and then they'll

build houses on it.

Our house sat kind of up on
a hill with a creek...

running under it.

And with this huge oak tree.

We had the biggest tree
in the neighborhood.

And it's pretty common in
the South for people to have

family plots, like on
their farm, a family cemetery,

underneath the biggest tree
on the property.

There were graves there,
and nobody knew about it before

they built the house.

Examining the area around
Michael's home, it becomes

apparent that this property was
built on a burial ground.

It's generally considered
unwise to build on top of

a burial ground.

Whenever you show disrespect to
the dead, you should be wary,

because they might treat
you with equal disrespect

and maybe even seek revenge on
you for intruding

on their space.

Before I experienced all this,

I'd had other experiences
throughout my life.

But I'd always dismissed them.

This was different because this
happened all the time.

We had been having activity
in the house

for three to five
years at this point.

The majority of the time,
you can communicate with

the spirit and let them know
what it is you want.

This is your house.

You gain control
of the situation.

In rare instances like Michael,

he needs to leave.

We got out of the house.

It didn't follow me,
and everything was peaceful.
