They had a lovely family.

They lived in a lovely area.

How could it get any better?

The letter said that
they wanted $50,000.

If anything goes wrong,
I'm dead.

[Quinn speaking]

Is this an elaborate scheme
to cover up a murder?

[Dunlap] There are people
crazy enough that would

torture her and then kill her.

[kidnapper speaking]

We didn't know if she was
dead or alive.

I just wanted to keep
our children close to us.

I'm retired special agent
Toni Chrabot.

I am retired FBI Special Agent
Alex Silverstein.

[Silverstein] Ponte Vedra
is absolutely gorgeous.

Very close to
Jacksonville Beach.

Full of multi-million dollar
homes that are part of one of

the most beautiful stretches
of beach in northeast Florida.

And the community there
is very affluent.

In an area like Ponte Vedra,
crime is exceptionally rare.

[Dunlap] Ponte Vedra,
it's kind of old school.

It's somewhat of a southern
town, but a great neighborhood,

very safe, very comfortable.
We didn't lock our doors.

[Weed] We're close-knit.

It's a lot of people
from different cities.

Some are lawyers, some are
doctors, some are with Jaguars,

the NFL, a lot of
PGA Tour golfers.

Back in 2009, slowly,
young families were moving

into the neighborhood.

I lived directly
across the street

from Reid and Quinn Gray
on the boulevard.

From our dining room,
you could see across

to their house.

Lovely, beautiful house
on the ocean.

They had two little girls,
and they seemed very nice,

very normal, lovely.

I would always
see her with her children.

Every now and then, I'd see
her husband out on the beach.

Her husband, Reid, was very
nice looking, fit, very fit.

[Butler] Reid Gray was
a successful businessman.

He owned some kind of
medical services company.

He and his partner were
making, you know,

over a million a year.

[Dunlap] Quinn and Reid
looked like the perfect couple,

and they seemed to be
the type that would

fit right in to Ponte Vedra.

[ominous chord strike]

[phone ringing]

[operator and Reid speaking]

We received a 911 call
from Reid Gray, who at the time

was at his home,

and he conveyed to
our 911 operators about

this kidnapping of his wife,
and she had called him to

tell him that
her life was at stake.

And Reid did what people do
and call police,

because they don't know
what to do.

He didn't sound traumatized,
but, you know,

he sounded mystified.

Genuinely came across
as somebody who had no idea

what was going on.

We went tactical rapidly.

We activated all of
our SWAT team assets.

-[suspenseful chord strike]
-[sirens wailing]

We always made our children,

when we had dinner parties,
stay upstairs.

And I'll never forget our son
coming down the stairs

and all of a sudden looking
at us and saying, "There are

"SWAT guys, there are men
in suits with big guns

out in the yard."

We couldn't quite put together
what was going on,

but something terrible
had happened.

The SWAT team
secured the perimeter...

[rapid beats play]

and entered the home.

We can see exactly
what they're seeing.

There was no signs
of forced entry.

Interestingly, there was
a wedding album

and some pictures
that were open.

[ominous music plays]

And then we found a ransom note
that was left on the countertop

in Quinn's handwriting.

In that note, she says she was
abducted by three men,

and $50,000 in cash was
demanded by the perpetrators.

[ominous chord strike]

Kidnapping is extremely rare
and a very high risk of

an event as you can get.

It's beyond the pale for us,

so we reached out
to our federal partners,

and the best one
in this was the FBI

because that's kidnapping.
That's what they do.

[Chrabot] My name
is Toni Chrabot.

I was the Assistant
Special Agent in charge

in Jacksonville.

In any kidnapping,
every minute, every hour

is crucial.

The young mother had been
kidnapped by three men,

and they wanted $50,000.

And this mother,
we believed,

was in real danger.

My training consisted of
16 weeks at Quantico.

I chose to specialize
in crisis negotiation,

hostage negotiation,

and my mission was to bring
Quinn Gray home alive.

[suspenseful music plays]

Every field office has
a kidnapping plan,

but very, very few FBI field
offices actually execute it

because that crime here
in the United States is just

so exceptionally rare.

It's very difficult to
hold somebody hostage.

You have to feed them.
You have to shelter them.

You have to keep them away
from the rest of the world.

This is very hard to do.

So my thoughts were
that this was something...

highly unusual.

-[suspenseful chord strike]
-[suspenseful beat plays]

A couple of hours later,
Quinn Gray's car was found

abandoned near
the Ponte Vedra Club Spa.

It was a mystery who had
kidnapped Quinn Gray.

The St. Johns County
Sheriff's Office

had their SWAT team in the home

in case the kidnappers
came back to get a hold of Reid

or the children.

I just wanted to keep
our children close to us.

-We were very, very concerned.
-We were frightened for her.

[Dunlap] An abduction like that,
you really don't know

what the motive is, and you
never know what's gonna happen,

but you can only assume
that it's not gonna be good.

[police sirens echo]

With any investigation of
a crime, the first people that

you have to rule out
as a suspect are the people

that are closest to the victim.

[suspenseful beat plays]

So we were looking at Reid

as for any type
of possible involvement.

It was important for us to look
at Reid and do a deep dive

into his background,
his lifestyle,

his financial situation.

[Reid] OK.

We learned that his income
was substantial.

In the ransom note,
it said they wanted $50,000

that represented money
that they had loaned to Reid.

[Reid speaking]

[Silverstein] We then started
talking to him more about

what the marriage was like
between him and Quinn.

[Reid speaking]

The situation at home was
not good, even though they

had all these financial means
and financial resources that

certainly there was
unhappiness in the home.

Learning about his wife
having an affair,

maybe he's tired of it.
He's tired of her drinking.

Maybe does he want
her out of his life?

We asked the question,
is this an elaborate scheme

to cover up a murder?

Did Reid kill her?

We have a unified
command center mobile,

and we set up at a school

very close to the scene
of the incident.

[Chrabot]
I am in the command post,

and they provided
me with two agents,

and I wanted to get them
into the house as quickly

as possible with Reid Gray,

and they would record
any communications

incoming and outgoing.

We asked the question,
"Could he be a part of this?"

The next morning,
Reid Gray received a call.

[phone ringing]

[Quinn and Reid speaking]

It was a relief
to hear Quinn's voice.

That is proof of life.

Now we knew that Quinn
couldn't be in danger from Reid.

Quinn was actually
on the phone, so we knew

that she was alive.

But the level of fear
and desperation in her voice,

somebody who really believes
that their life is in danger.

Quinn was very adamant
that he take the $50,000

and go down Butler Boulevard.

[suspenseful music plays]

We didn't know exactly
where this was going.

And shortly after, Quinn called
Reid again and gave

the exact drop site
at restaurant.

[phone ringing]

[Quinn and Reid speaking]

[ominous chord strike]

Now we had a specific location
for a money drop.

Reid was willing
to pay the ransom.

It's a huge opportunity.

We're gonna surveil that.

We're gonna want to see
who picks up that bag.

We're gonna want to follow
them with the hope that

they will lead us to
wherever Quinn is.

Shortly after,
she called again.

[phone ringing]

[Quinn speaking]

[Shoar] Suspects were upset
because they observed

some cars that they
thought were "fed cars."

[Chrabot] What it showed is
that they are watching,

and that they're very
surveillance conscious.

[police sirens echo]

At some point
Saturday afternoon,

all the communication with Reid
from the kidnappers,

from Quinn's phone, stopped.

Quinn's phone was off, so there
was no way of tracking it.

After the failed drop,
Quinn stopped communicating

with Reid...

but then there was a call
placed from Quinn

to her mother, Gail Sikes.

Quinn's mom was frantic
and wanted to do

whatever she could to
try to bring Quinn home.

Quinn's mother agreed to
be the intermediary,

to work with us.

On Sunday morning, a text came
through from Quinn's phone

to her mom.

It says, "Have the money
in a bag, no traceable devices,

"no Reid whatsoever,

no cops.
Be ready to leave at 11."

And it says,
"Go to Mickler's Landing.

There you find further
instructions in a restroom."

[ominous chord strike

Quinn's mom went to
Mickler's Landing and she went

into the bathroom.

And there she found another
note in Quinn's handwriting.

And it said, "Mom,
so far I'm fine.

"No harm has been done to me.

"Please, after you pick up this
letter, you are going to drive

"north towards Joe's Crab Shack.

"Drop the money out of the car
and do not look back.

"Anything goes wrong,

I'm dead."

Joe's Crab Shack is
a popular restaurant

in Jacksonville Beach at one of
the busiest intersections.

There was a lot of angst about
dropping $50,000 on the street

in a public area that is
heavily trafficked.

This is a holiday Sunday
and a holiday weekend,

and they're wanting Quinn's mom
to drop $50,000 out the window

of a car
in a public parking lot

with that kind of traffic.
I mean, that's just,

that's a disaster
waiting to happen.

[indistinct radio chatter]

I was getting real-time
communication as far as

what was going on.

[Silverstein] We had technical
assets that were monitoring.

We had air assets
that were keeping an eye

on everything overhead.

Our technical team were
able to outfit the bag

with the ransom money with
a transmitter so that we would

be able to track it.

We've got agents, detectives
in cars, covert, trying to

blend in, just watching.

Quinn's mom is driving
to Joe's Crab Shack.

We had an agent hidden
in the back seat of the car.

She's pulling in
the parking lot.

She's put the bag down.

Quinn's mom drops off
the money, and now we wait.

This is a tense moment.

We have $50,000
in a very public square,

and we're waiting for
who's gonna pick it up.

We were ready.

Everybody was ready.

Quinn's mom comes over
the live comms and says,

[Chrabot] Suddenly,
we see four guys

coming out of Joe's Crab Shack.

We see a man pick up the bag,
get into a vehicle,

and drive away.
It's on.

Surveillance units
started following them...

-[suspenseful music plays]
-[indistinct radio chatter]

...and then they threw out
the tracking device

that had been placed
in the bag.

[indistinct radio chatter]

They drove to Gate Gas Station
in Jacksonville Beach.

[indistinct radio chatter]

[phone ringing]

[operator and caller speaking]

People who picked up the bag of
money saw what they had

and they called the police.

[caller speaking]

Jacksonville Beach Police
respond to the scene.

These gentlemen who picked up
the money turned out to be

German tennis players
who were in town

for a tennis tournament.

They had nothing to do
with this kidnapping.

They were terrified that
they were being followed

by drug dealers.

Yeah.

And they were being followed
by law enforcement.

How did this happen?

In a situation like this,
where it is life and death,

I'm like, "I just really hope
this doesn't go bad."

[Silverstein] And then the
kidnapper called Quinn's mother.

-[phone ringing]
-[kidnapper and Gail speaking]

There was no prep
for this phone call.

Nobody expected this to happen.

[kidnapper speaking]

-[gunshot blasts]
-[Gail speaking]

Suddenly in the background,

we hear a gunshot.

[ominous chord strike]

Quinn's mom is -- she is shaken
because we didn't know

if she was dead or alive.

[Silverstein]
If a kidnapper believes
that he's not going to get

the ransom money,
then there's no profit

in keeping
the victim alive.

If I just make
the victim disappear,

then I don't get caught.

When the kidnapper's voice
is heard on the call,

that really changed everything.

It was like the bottom of
my stomach completely fell out.

[Chrabot] The first time I heard
the kidnapper's voice,

that was sobering.

It was the first time we heard
anybody besides Quinn,

you know, over three days.

[Silverstein] His accent
was Eastern European.

His tone was
confident, arrogant.

We still didn't know
if she was dead or alive.

I was worried.

[police sirens echo]

[Weed] I know that their family
was caring for her children,

and we were just
really concerned about her.

It was very unnerving
for all of us.

[Chrabot] At this point,
late in the day on Sunday,

communication was cut off.

As the hours passed
through the night, not hearing

her voice, not having
any communication whatsoever,

I was worried,
as was the rest of the team,

of -- you know,
what happened.

[ominous chord strike]

[phone ringing]

[operator and Quinn speaking]

[sirens wailing]

[Loeffert] My name
is Gary Loeffert.

I was the Supervisory Special
Agent with responsibility

over the criminal squad.

Quinn Gray had called 911,
and she was

over in Clay County
at a mall,

and she had been
released by the kidnappers.

[sirens wailing]

This had been four days
with no end in sight.

It was a huge relief.

Quinn was eventually brought
here to the FBI office

in Jacksonville.

Her impression was
she looked well,

been through a lot,
obviously, a lot of trauma.

[Silverstein] The moment
she comes into the office,

she starts screaming
that we were all trying to

get her killed, and we had
no idea what we were doing,

just really raving.

And she started blaming
her husband, Reid Gray.

[Quinn and agent speaking]

Did Reid Gray hire
somebody to kidnap her?

Was he somehow...involved?

Those were questions
that were still outstanding.

She alleged that
three Albanian men

had kidnapped her
from her home.

And she was bound at the wrist
and driven to a warehouse,

and that's where she was
over the entire time.

She had some marks on her wrist
that were consistent

with being bound,
so we documented that.

She didn't want Reid
to be there.

She wanted to be
far away from Reid.

And the interview
didn't last very long.

She just -- she wanted
to go home.

A couple days later,
we started

doing more interviews.

She is calmer,

and she no longer
blames Reid for any of this.

And she starts to tell a story,
instead of three guys,

now she starts to tell more
that it was one person.

[Quinn speaking]

She lays the blame for all this
at her kidnapper's feet.

That her kidnapper had taken
her to an auto body shop

that she was bound
the entire time.

At a point in the interview,
she begins to get very emotional

as she's recounting
that she was taken to

this mechanic shop
and placed in a room.

She thought that
this kidnapper is going to

torture her and then kill her.

She said she was going along

with whatever
the demands of her were

in order to stay alive.

And then there was
just this -- this moment

where all of a sudden
Quinn says something

that was staggering.

[ominous music plays]

There was just this
moment of disbelief

of what everyone heard.

She talked about basically
liking it and having orgasms

and...every which way,
every position possible.

I mean, that was
pretty much her words,

and even to the extent
that he liked her [bleep].

There was a female detective
who was in the room,

who kind of sat back
and threw up her hands

and kind of
made a disgusted noise.

Is this a victim that
is just traumatized?

It's just a very odd...

statement for someone
to make, if, in fact,

this is a real kidnapping.

[suspenseful music plays]

During the interview, one of
the other inconsistencies was

that she said she was
moved from the warehouse.

[Silverstein]
That was a big lead.

We drive up to the hotel.

The area is just
a sketchy part of town.

There is a lot of prostitution
and drug use that goes on.

We made contact with
the manager and the staff.

Showed them a picture of Quinn.

They recognized Quinn.

[suspenseful chord strike]

They remembered that
she was with a male and that

the two seemed like
a normal couple together.

They were very comfortable with
one another, and Quinn did not

show any signs
of distress or duress.

He told us also that Quinn
had been in the room by herself

and that the man had
come and gone and had

left her there periodically.

That's exceptionally odd.

If there's one kidnapper
and he left,

why hadn't Quinn
called for help?

Why hadn't Quinn gone to
the lobby and asked for help?

Why was she still there?

[door creaks]

[Chrabot] During her interview,
Quinn told investigators that

her kidnapper, at one point,
went out and got chicken wings.

[Loeffert] The abductor had gone
to the local supermarket,

and we knew that
this supermarket chain

had surveillance systems
that were very good.

So we grab all the surveillance
video so that we can start

reviewing it around
the time frame that Quinn said.

[suspenseful chord strike]

And we discover a white male
buying fried chicken.

And we were able to get
the image of the abductor,

and then put that image
on the local news.

[reporter] Witnesses reported
a man as appearing to be

in his mid-20s to early 30s
and about 5'8 to 6' tall.

Then the 911 center
for the city of Jacksonville

gets a phone call.

[phone ringing]

[operator and Jasmin speaking]

Jasmin Osmanovic was
an immigrant from Bosnia.

He was an auto mechanic,
and he worked in a body shop

off of Southside Boulevard
in Jacksonville.

Osmanovic came off
as very arrogant, very cocky,

led detectives to believe
that this was a waste of time.

Osmanovic was shown pictures
of Quinn Gray.

He provided an alibi
that he was at another bar

with another woman
when this kidnapping happened.

[ominous chord strike]

[Silverstein]
Once we started talking
about the charges he was facing,

kidnapping and sexual battery,
both of which carry with it

a life sentence,

and that's really at a point
where the conversation changed.

He realized he had to tell us
what really happened.

And that's when Osmanovic said
that he had a secret recording

that he had made when
he was with Quinn Gray

that would prove his innocence.

[suspenseful music plays]

He kept insisting that he had
proof, that he could prove that

he had not kidnapped Quinn Gray
and that he hadn't raped her.

And that at the right time,
he was gonna show us.

And then we kept insisting,
"Now, now is the right time."

[Silverstein]
Osmanovic realized that
no one would believe his story

without some kind of proof.

So he went to
a Walmart and he purchased
a digital voice recorder

and carried it
with him on Monday morning

back to the Emerson Inn.

He then goes into the room,
and they are

having a conversation.

Then we hear them have sex.
It's graphic.

[Loeffert]
They're talking about Quinn's
sex life with her husband,

and you can clearly tell
that this is

a consensual relationship.

[Silverstein] And then
Quinn starts talking about
the $50,000 ransom.

[Silverstein] Quinn says,
"Why don't you just blow
his head off?"

And it's said in passing,

but that was
really a telling moment.

Sunday night, where Jasmin
leaves Quinn alone,

I think that's where
she started to realize,

"This is coming apart.

I need to come up
with another plan."

And I think that's where
the idea was hatched that,

"If I can't get the cash,

then maybe I'll just
have Reid killed."

The whole involvement
with organized crime,

that's the stage that she set.

I believe, based on
the recording, that this had

been a campaign on Quinn's part
to actually kill Reid.

Either she would kill Reid
or she would

have Jasmin kill Reid.

I think that that might have
been her endgame,

because in a divorce,
she'd get half.

If Reid was dead,
she'd get everything.

Neither Quinn Gray
nor Jasmin Osmanovic

were charged with
conspiracy to murder.

Both were charged
with extortion of $50,000

from Reid Gray.

When we told Quinn that
she was being arrested,

she denied all the charges.

[reporter] Did you try to take
money from your husband?

Of course not.

If I wanted $50,000,
all I would do is take it

out of the bank account.

[reporter] Did you have a sexual
relationship with Osmanovic?

No, I did not.
I did not know him.

[reporter] Then why
would he make this up?

Because he's a criminal,
and he came in and tried to

extort $50,000 from me
and tried to take me.

I think Jasmin Osmanovic was,
in some ways, a willing pawn.

Here was a guy of very modest
means, and he is presented

with this
golden opportunity.

A woman of means,
she's beautiful,

and she comes on to him,
and they have this

wild sexual affair.

This was intoxicating
to him, and that led him to do

whatever she wanted to do.

Quinn Gray pled
nolo contendere.

She received
seven years of probation,

and Osmanovic, six.

They also had to pay
$86,000 of restitution

to the St. Johns County
Sheriff's Office for the cost

of the investigation.

[Weed] I know she's moved on
and has remarried, and he has

remarried, and I'm sure
people absolutely do deserve

a second chance.

I kind of gave her the second
chance by keeping coming

to yoga on the days
I know she was teaching.

[Chrabot] Quinn Gray
and Jasmin Osmanovic,

their elaborate hoax
caused a lot of heartache

for their family members,
a lot of worry, frustration,

anger, and wasted
a lot of man hours.

Quinn Gray betrayed both
her husband and her lover,

Jasmin Osmanovic.

And she lost everything.

She lost her family unit
of four.

She lost her home in paradise.
She lost the trust

of family and friends,
and she tarnished

her own reputation.
For what?

that I thought was mine.

Something didn't sit right
with me.

We had no idea of the steal
Lee's scheme would rise to.
