my grandparents that

were born in the early 1900s.

there is no way this is
going in the trash bin.

I mean, it looks 50- or 60-
caliber, something like that.

It's just like-- it works
kind of like a revolver.

It's kind of--

I'm rarely kind of baffled,
but I'm kind of baffled.

It's sort of like shooting,
like, a handheld rocket.

There's no way to aim this.

It's one of the coolest
things I've ever owned.

Normally, when you come in,
I tell you what I have.

But I have no idea
what I have here.

That thing's a monster.

It is a massive caliber.

I mean, I'm thinking
it's 45- or 50-cal,

maybe even a little higher.

And it's completely
impractical as a firearm.

So what I mean by that
is there is no grip.

There is no stock.

And then you have this
gigantic trigger.

But as you pull it back
it's double action, which

means you pull it back,
it fires,

and then it re-cocks itself.

But it's not made
to hold to shoot.

So it can only be one thing.

And that would be--

It was made for a booby trap.

Collectors call this
a trap gun.

So this would be
set up somewhere

coming into an entrance of a
house, or a gate, or a window,

or a trip line in the woods,
either for some kind

of security system
or for some type

of ambush hunting situation.

Many trap guns have a ring
at the bottom where you did

put a line, like a trip wire.

You would have been
able to hit things,

stop something in its tracks.

It's interesting, because
there are two crowns and a U,

and then there's
a little code for the date.

So it is pre-1899
and it's German.

They're actually quite rare.

You don't see them often
at all.

You know, this is ginormous
on a level of the Bira gun.

You know that, right?

Whoa.

Did you get this thing
from Jules Verne?

Pretty much.

So, what exactly is this?

This is an original
Nepalese Bira gun.

I can honestly say I've never
actually seen one of these,

but it's pretty amazing.

It was handmade in Nepal.

Does it work?

I've been told it works.

So we're out in the desert.

I got Alex,
Mark Hall-Patton,

and we're going to shoot
the Bira gun.

Look at this, the Bira gun.

This thing's sweet, Rick.

So here's what the Bira gun is.

The Nepalese,
a man named Gajendra,

was able to smuggle in
an American Gardner gun

out of England into Nepal,

and he attempted
to reverse engineer

the American Gardner gun,
and it became the Bira gun.

But he made
some radical changes.

I mean, the most notable change
is that pan magazine.

Now, this pan magazine holds
120 rounds of this ammunition,

which I brought today.

This is a Martini-Henry
ammunition.

Look at the size of that round.

When that's fully loaded
it weighs 40 pounds,

just the pan magazine.
- Whoa.

It is tremendously unique,
and I have never seen one fire.

Who's first?

That's why I'm here.

- OK, you're the Guinea pig.

I've never loved
a gun so much.

What's it worth?

Well, the market value
for these is about 27,500.

It's actually a volley gun,
but people now refer

to it as the Nock volley gun.

They were designed actually
for British warships,

and they have boarding parties.

And as the boarding parties
came over the deck,

these guys who had
these volley guns

were up in the rigging,

and they would shoot down
with seven barrels,

thinking that it would
clear the decks.

So have you fired this thing?

I have not.

I was nervous to shoot it
because of the amount of kick

that it probably has.

I'm a scuba diver,
and I found it

about 30 years ago off
the coast of the Caribbean.

Well, there's plenty of
pirate ships down there, so--

what I think I can buy it for.

This is the cannon that we

So all of these markings
and the fact that it's iron

signify to me that this
is a swivel gun

for a merchant ship from
about the mid-18th century.

And this thing has
a pretty sizable bore,

so it was meant
to do real damage.

So I didn't really
bring a target.

I mean, if we're
gonna shoot a cannon,

do we have anything
decent to hit?

Rick's been wanting us
to get rid of this car,

so I'm sure he'd be happy
to blow it up,

just so long
as we let him come watch.

Colt Paterson revolver.

This almost looks like it's
French or something right here.

some foreign-looking words
on it

that are pretty worn down.

So this is a pretty well-known
Belgian manufacturer

called Lhoist.

So the Belgian gunmakers
in Liège were prolific.

They were copying firearms
made from all over the world.

This is funky.

It is sort of an
upside-down gun.

You notice that
there's no lock on top.

This was developed
by this crazy Frenchman,

Heurteloup or something, and
he called this the Koptipeur.

There was a belief that
by having the lock on top,

it exposed it to the elements.

And so it would degrade faster.

Oh, right.

So this is the hammer
underneath the gun,

so gun collectors would call
that an underhammer system.

Can you even fire it?

It's a muzzle loading gun,
so it's easy to load.

And we could certainly
give it a shot.

So what's it worth?

If this went to auction
and somebody paid $10,000,

I wouldn't be surprised.

Sherman tank from Iwo Jima

that can blow up a car.

the greatest days of my life.

de la crème of firearms.

the real fancy stuff is at.

A lot of the pieces here
have fascinating provenance,

some of which is royal.

One of the pieces
I'd like to show you guys

is this pair of pistols
here by John Christie.

That is some crazy work.

George III commissioned
John Christie to come down

from Scotland
to make dress pistols

and suchlike for
diplomatic gifts.

You'd never fire
anything like that.

Interestingly, they have
a proof mark just here,

which is actually
the private Tower

of London proof mark, which was
mostly done for royal pieces.

OK.
Can I pick one up?

Yeah, sure.

It makes you feel royal.

That is pretty incredible.

What's that one right
there, the ivory one?

It's not ivory, no.
That's Staghorn.

So this is made in 1600, and
it's made for the Saxon Court

in Germany.

So that's a wheel lock.

This is a wheel lock,
about 1600 in date.

Yeah.
- Man, check this thing out.

It's beautiful.

What's really interesting about
the mechanism is you wind it.

And this is a tightly-wound
spring that starts--

once you let it go,
it starts to spin.

And there's a little door here.

That door opens up
and creates sparks,

which lights the priming
powder, which fires the gun.

So how much is
the wheel lock?

The wheel lock
is 140,000 pounds.

OK. Um--

I think I'll pass on this one,
but how much are these?

They're 100,000 pounds.

100,000 pounds?

It's like $105,000 American.

perspective of, like, Tiny Tim.

They look 1770 to, like, 1810.

says Captain JN Morris.

He was in the
Battle of Trafalgar,

which was essentially the sea
battle that stopped Napoleon's

expansion in Europe.

He took a shot to the knee.

He had to use crutches all the
way until his death at 1830.

So, theoretically,
it all lines up.

kind of fun to aim at.

This is one of the most
rudimentary devices

considered a firearm
that ever existed.

Technically, it's a hand
cannon, and that's its handle.

And they also pushed it
into the ground.

a lot of uses for it.

and it looks good,

So I stuck it in the earth.

to anchor it down

a Revolutionary War Brown Bess

and we were in Boston, so I
kind of had to play the part.

What have we got here?

We have a Brown Bess musket
from the Revolutionary War era.

All right.
It's pretty incredible.

I mean, the Brown Bess
was the standard issue

of the British Army for the
infantry for almost 100 years.

But it's got
a really long barrel on it,

and I don't think I've actually
ever seen one this long.

So that's a little weird to me.

So how much do you want for it?

The lowest
I'll take is 20,000.

So where'd you get this?

It's been passed down
throughout my family,

generationally.

So this is called the Long
Land Pattern Brown Bess.

And the barrel
is supposed to be long.

It's actually 46 inches long.

Now, on the barrel,
it's 43rd Regiment.

So the 43rd Regiment
of foot fought during

the American Revolution
that marched

to Lexington and Concord.

And then they fought
at the Battle of Bunker Hill

and Breed's Hill.

So this could have been part
of the Revolutionary War.

With the regimental marking,
if it's safe to fire,

it's worth up to 50,000.

in here just like they

would have used in 1775.

A well-trained British regular
would have been able

to shoot this Brown Bess
four times a minute.

And the way they did that
is that they packaged

their cartridge with the musket
ball here and the powder here.

They would rip it off,
put the powder down the barrel,

then drop the ball in
and then use the paper

as wadding so it all holed in.

So in the spirit of
the American Revolution,

for targets I set up some
drummer boy Colonial drums.

Usually, you have the
surprise for the weird thing,

like that antique cannon.

It's a little bigger
than I imagined.

It's a mountain cannon,
which means that it's designed

to be put on a bunch of mules.

So basically, it's
a cannon you can disassemble.

Yeah.

So you could literally,
like, take it

to the top of
that mountain up there

and just rain down terror
and hell and damnation.

You know what I mean?

How much you looking
to get out of it?

To tell you the truth,
I have no idea.

Here's a few things.

We're gonna have to know
if it works.

If it fires and it works,
that's one thing.

Wow.
That is good-looking.

Now, these are really rare.

Fewer than 200 of these
were made.

They had a very short window,
about 1901, 1902,

and then they were obsolete.

Because this whole system
back here is friction-primed,

which was an archaic way
of making this gun

fire that developed in 1863.

But, I mean,
this is a beautiful,

beautifully maintained cannon.

Here is the
original data plate.

So, yeah, it is dated 1902.

breech door and take a look?

I mean, the bore
is really nice.

It's maintained well.

There is pitting, but you
can still see all the lands

and grooves quite crisply.

I don't see any reason
why we couldn't

fire it if you're up for it.

So if I hit it, you'll get
to see what's in there.
