is the site of the bloodiest

battle in America's history.

In the Battle of Gettysburg,
there were 51,000 casualties.

[Josh]
But some say the Civil War era
fighting still rages on today,

now between
the living and the dead.

I've seen full-body
apparitions, head-to-toe.

Y'all have so much
paranormal activity here!

[Josh]
Witnesses claim a terrifying
Phantom Regiment marches

through the town
and its historic battlefields.

His left cheek, it looks like
it's been just ripped off.

I want to talk
about Gettysburg.

Big topic.

Ultimate battle of
the Civil War, turning point

for the Union Army,
and a decisive victory over

Confederate forces.

And the largest battle
in American history.

-And the bloodiest.
-Well done, history nerds.

You know your stuff.
But I bet you didn't know this.

The locals say the fight
has continued with the ghost

of those that have died
on the battlefield.

Uh, OK.
Go on.

Well, there's reports
of paranormal activity

all over Gettysburg.

We're talking phantom
cannon blasts,

shadow figures
in military uniform,

and even violent poltergeists.

Fascinating.

But, you know, look, if you're
a paranormal believer, it also

hardly seems surprising, right?

This was death
on an industrial scale.

We're talking thousands
who died in brutal battle,

brother against brother.

If anywhere in America
is haunted,

it's got to be Gettysburg.

[marching music plays]

July 1st, 1863, the Civil War
has been raging

for two and a half years

when Confederate
General Robert E. Lee

leads his troops north.

They collide with Union
soldiers just outside

of the small, sleepy town
of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

[soldiers roaring]

[blasts]

[Josh]
The fighting quickly escalates
to envelop the entire town

and surrounding farmland.

For three days,
165,000 soldiers on both sides

clash in brutal, bloody combat.

Bullets tear through flesh.

Minié balls shatter bones.

Shrapnel shells turn men
into red mist.

The town is the bleeding heart
of the war zone.

Makeshift hospitals spring up
in family homes and inns.

Amputations are so common that
piles of severed limbs stack up

taller than a man.

When the smoke finally clears,
around 8,000 men are dead,

with 30,000 more wounded.

It is the deadliest battle
of the Civil War

and America's history.

The locals, stunned
and grieving, are left

to bury the dead
in shallow graves.

Miraculously, only a single
civilian, Jennie Wade,

dies in the crossfire.

But the town is forever scarred
and never at peace,

because that's when
the hauntings begin.

The first published account
of paranormal activity

come in 1887,

with one newspaper
article describing,

quote, "supernatural sights
and sounds on Gettysburg's

Round Top Hill."

In the years that follow,
there are stories of full-body

apparitions of soldiers
seen throughout the town

and surrounding battlefields.

Today, visitors and locals
regularly report

disturbing encounters.

In the South Cavalry
battlefield, ghostly figures

are seen marching
silently in lockstep,

and some hear the sounds
of phantom cannons

and disembodied screams.

In town, places that were
on the conflict's front line,

like the Farnsworth House Inn
and the Jennie Wade House,

are said to be plagued
by violent poltergeists.

Over 160 years
after the fateful conflict,

residents are convinced
the war rages on, fought

by the soldiers who will never
surrender, even in death.

I don't think there's
a battlefield anywhere

in America that's more
emotionally charged

than Gettysburg.
So maybe it's not ghosts.

Maybe people's imaginations
and emotions are waging war.

I just think there's more
to it than that.

The spectrum and depth
of reports are incredible.

Eyewitness accounts,
photos, videos.

There's something else
going on here.

It's about a four-hour drive
from New York to the town

of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

And from the moment
Heather and Phil arrive,

they're overwhelmed
by the history.

[country music plays]

[Phil] Wow!

Take a look around --
Gettysburg battlefield.

It's one thing to read about
it in the history books,

but to actually be here
and look at these battlefields,

it gives you a whole
new perspective.

It's beautiful countryside.

It's hard to imagine
the carnage that was here.

And what's wild is that
in these fields, there are

well over a thousand bodies that

still have not been recovered
and accounted for.

While the battlefields cover
about 11,000 acres of land,

the town at its center
is only about

one and a half square miles.

This must be it.

Heather and I head straight to
the historic Farnsworth House,

named after 25-year-old
Union General Elon Farnsworth,

who died heroically
at Gettysburg.

-[Doc] Hello.
-[Phil] Hey, how are you?

We're meeting local historians
Christina Rowand, Doc Weitzel,

and Val Capone to hear
firsthand accounts of how

the battle engulfed the town
and the paranormal activity

that's allegedly resulted.

OK.

So, this is a map
of the Battle of Gettysburg?

-Yes.
-Correct.

So, everybody hears
about the battlefields.

What we're really
interested in is

what was happening in town.

[Doc]
The town is the battlefield.

It's the first example of urban
warfare here in America.

We're in the Farnsworth House
right now.

How does it fit in this battle?

[Val] After all the carnage,
the rear cellar was used as

a temporary morgue.
-[Heather] Oof.

With hundreds of Union soldiers
stacked down there.

-Hundreds?
-[Doc] Hundreds.

And the cellar is
where we have some

of our most intense activity.

I've experienced
physical contact.

I was setting up for a tour.

They have pews down there
for seating.

When I'm near the back,
there was a black figure

sitting, looking at me.

It rose from the pew
and was hovering,

and I stepped backwards
and I fell on the floor.

-[faded scream]
-Put my hands up.

Never felt threatened
before in this way.

You tell me you saw
a full-fledged shadow spirit

that looked at you and scared
you so much you fell over?

-Yes.
-Wow.

One of the most frequent
experiences that people

will capture with their cameras,
either in a picture frame or

in our mirrors, is of what is
called a "Shadow Man."

He's dressed in all black.
So tall, he reaches the top

of the ceiling.

Do you have any
of those photos?

-[Christina] I do.
-OK.

Whoa!

[Heather] Ooh.
And no one was standing there?

[Christina]
No, they were not.

That's creepy.

We never see the Shadow Man
with the naked eye.

Just in the photographs,

and the Jennie Wade House,
the only house where a civilian

was killed during battle.

Jennie is making dough
for the hot, hungry, and tired

Union soldiers.

She will be shot by accident
by a sharpshooter's bullet.

It's going to penetrate
two doors.

She'll be dead on that
kitchen floor at 20 years old.

And there have been things that
have happened that have made me

say, "This is Jennie Wade."
Like, we continuously

hear footsteps.

People frequently smell
bread baking in the house.

Hm.

About two blocks
away from here,

I decided to take a walk
and see the town at night.

I noticed a paved path

where the energy
was so much different.

Hm.

And at that moment,

I see full-body apparitions

at the top of the hill.

They were a spitting image
of a Civil War soldier.

I could see the cap down to
their feet, and I was scared.

And when I say scared,
I'm talking about nightmare

kind of scared.
-That is a wild story.

Other people see
something like that?

Other people see
things like that.

Really?

Yes, out there drilling,
marching, just as they would.

They call them
the "Phantom Regiment."

Y'all have so much paranormal
activity here.

I know where I want
to start tonight.

He'll investigate
the Farnsworth House,

where Doc had
a terrifying encounter

with an entity

where several witnesses have
seen a mysterious Shadow Man

appear in photos.

Later, we'll regroup at
the edge of town,

where Val reported seeing
the Phantom Regiment.

That's from the bullet
that killed Jennie Wade.

in her exact position.

because Jennie Wade

was baking bread
for the Union soldiers.

If Jennie Wade is still haunting

a trigger object.

Right here, nothing.
No shadow.

Look at this one!

That is the silhouette
of a Shadow Man right there!

And you can definitely see
it's like a cavalry hat.

I was taking that picture here,

and that would have been
behind me.

[Phil] I head to the cellar
of the Farnsworth House.

It served as a makeshift morgue
during the battle,

and it's where Doc says he saw
a terrifying shadow figure.

Oh, look, look, look, look.

Did you see that?
You got that?

I swear that door
just moved on its own.

[creaking]

It looked
like it was opening.

Don't feel any breeze.

There's no draft going
through here.

[creaking]

Very weird.

Oh, wow.

They would stack dozens
and dozens of bodies

on each other in here.

Where I am standing right now,
the blood seeped

into the ground.

Looking at this floor, I wonder
if it's slightly uneven.

And when you step on uneven
ground, it has been shown that

it can trigger your brain
to enter a state of adrenaline,

a state of alarm, a state of
there could be something wrong.

You add that to the history
of what factually happened

in this room, that can warp
your perceptions around you.

I want to test the floors.

I'm upstairs at
the Jennie Wade House.

My name's Heather.

I'm here to understand all
the activity that's going on

in Gettysburg.
Can you tell me your name?

"Help"?
What do you need help with?

"Pain"?

Are you trapped here?

This chair was just moving.

Is there a draft?

There's no draft.

I mean, there is no reason...

Oh, my God...

I gotta get answers.

Did you just make
this chair move?

"Yes."

Are you the Shadow Man
that showed up in pictures?

"Yes."
All right.

This is a laser leveler.

Look at the height of the laser
on that block right down there

on that floor.

It's basically right
at the corner,

maybe a centimeter above.

And then when you go over to
this side,

a significant slant.

It's got that kind of uneven
ground that can literally make

Doc slip, fall backwards.

When he said he was scared,
it just makes it easier to kind

of be knocked over and maybe
feel like you're being pushed.

When you are in a place
like this, it can make even

the slightest thing seem
a little bit bigger,

a little bit scarier.

Maybe Doc's imagination got
a little ahead of his reality.

Phil, do you copy?

Heather, hey, what's going on?

[Heather] The Jennie Wade House
did not disappoint.

I got the silhouette
of a Shadow Man in a picture.

And it's possible that I might
have been communicating with

the man who killed Jennie Wade.
-[Phil] What?

That is crazy.

[Heather]
We got one more place
to go tonight.

Yes, we do.

Want to meet in the middle over
where Val saw that supposed

Phantom Regiment?
-See you there.

Heading there now.

So the top of the hill is where
Val saw that Phantom Regiment.

[ghostly groans]

So I want to do what he did.

He let his eyes adjust
to the darkness

and took in the world
around him.

I want to get into
his headspace and see if I can

get more activity.

All right, well, I want to
bust out the FLIR and use

thermal vision,
because look at this.

This could be the largest patch
of forest next to town,

meaning it's probably home to
a lot of animals, things like

groups of deer that may go
marching at night.

He saw the full outline
of soldiers.

[distant creaking]

-[Phil] You hear that, yeah?
-[Heather] Yep.

[Phil]
Something's moving down there.

All right,
I'll get the FLIR out.

[beeping]

All right, you work
on your night vision.

I'm gonna try to track down
whatever that noise was.

OK.

Let's see if we can
see anything.

Is there anyone out there?

I really want to see
this Phantom Regiment, so

you can show yourself to me.

What the...
Heather!

Heather, get over here!

-[Heather] What was it?
-[Phil] Look at this.

[Phil]

-Isn't that wild?
-[Heather] That's incredible!

[Phil] There's three of them!

That was separate,
distinct signatures.

That could be
the Phantom Regiment.

[Phil] You don't see anything
over there, right?

[Heather] No.

[Phil] I've never gotten
anything like that on the FLIR.

Let's get over there.

[Phil] There's a trail
leading into the forest.

[Heather] You seen anything
on the FLIR?

[Phil]
No, not yet.

I don't feel any
temperature changes.

Doesn't feel like
there's any cold spots.

[Phil] Look, I say we give it
a couple more hours, see if

anything shows up on the FLIR.

I'll go this way,
you go that way.

Yep, let's keep at it.

[Phil]
Heather and I search for a few
more hours without witnessing

anything like those
anomalies again.

But Heather has seen enough.

She's convinced this is
the Phantom Regiment

and she wants to learn more
about who they could be.

I'm meeting with
Dominik Drybola...

How you doing?

[Phil]
...another local who claims

he came face to face with
a troop of spectral soldiers

on the battlefields
of Gettysburg.

So I understand you think
you may have seen what people

are calling
the "Phantom Regiment."

-Yeah.
-Tell me your story.
What happened?

Me and my dad, we came out
here about 2:00-2:30

in the morning.

As we look over
Little Round Top,

we see 12 soldiers
coming up the hill.

-[Phil] Soldiers?
-[Dominik] Yes.

Gettysburg is known
for ghost stories.

Is there a chance that some
people were dressing up

and just trying to spook you?

There shouldn't be anybody at
2:30 in the morning doing duck

and cover in the middle
of the night.

Fair.

My dad is spooked,
so he kind of peels off.

I stay, and I just keep
looking over.

[soldier] Fire!

As I'm watching, I look
to the right, and I see

a full-body apparition

five to six yards from me.

And it starts to approach me.

It probably got about
five feet from me.

I can start to make out
facial features

of what I believe
a Confederate soldier.

His left cheek, it looks like
it's been just ripped off.

His left eye is gone.

And I'm just staring
at this guy.

[Phil]
What were you thinking?

[Dominik]
I'm terrified.

I decided to turn around
and make my way to my dad.

And behind me, he sees
apparitions follow me.

You're telling me you didn't
just see the Phantom Regiment.

It sounds like you got chased
out of here by them.

[Dominik]
I believe so.

This sounds like
a horror movie.

Probably the most terrifying
experience that I've had.

[Heather]
I'm meeting with Gettysburg
historian Mark Nesbitt...

Mark, it's a pleasure
to meet you.

[Mark] Yeah, you too.

...to try to learn
more about who

the Phantom Regiment could be.

Have people been
able to narrow down

who this Phantom Regiment is?

[Mark speaking]

So what do we know about
General Farnsworth?

General Farnsworth was serving
under General Kilpatrick.

General Kilpatrick had
the nickname "Kill-Cavalry."

He was given that name
by his own men because he was

so reckless with their lives.
-Hm.

Kilpatrick ordered him to make
a charge on horseback

where horses really can't go.

It was a tangle of fallen logs,
rock fences this high.

That terrain sounds like
the worst place to send men

on horses.
-Absolutely.

It was a suicide mission.

When they found Farnsworth's
body, he had five bullet holes

in his torso.

So if the Phantom Regiment
really is Farnsworth's unit,

where exactly were
those men killed?

[Mark]
Farnsworth's charge took place
over in that area towards

our Little Round Top,
and that's where Farnsworth

and his troops died.

Where do we have the best
chance of getting

some activity?

I would go south of
the battlefield because that's

where Farnsworth and his troops
were stationed before they were

sent to their deaths.

And that's where many
of them were buried.

[Heather]
For tonight's investigation,
we're heading south of town to

an area of the battlefield
near Little Round Top.

And I've got the perfect way
to get there.

What did cavalrymen ride?

-[Phil] Horses.
-[Heather] Exactly.

So there's this theory
that the leader

of the Phantom Regiment
is actually General Farnsworth,

who led a brigade of cavalrymen.

[Phil] OK, namesake
of the Farnsworth Inn.

-[Heather] Yes!
-[Phil] Wow.

[Heather]
And where we're headed is
the southern battlefield where

they set up camp.

[Phil]
OK, so you're seeing these
horses as two giant trigger

objects with hooves?
-[Heather] Exactly.

It's just over this ridge.

[Phil] Look at that cannon!
And the camp!

[Heather] I know!

I had the re-enactors come
and set it up to help

with our investigation.
-That is amazing!

Please tell me
I get to pull the pin.

Yeah, you do,
but first you got to set

up the cameras.
-[Phil] All right, on it.

[mysterious music plays]

[Heather]
I brought all of these
trigger objects to the spot

where Farnsworth and his men
spent their last night alive

to see if we can stir up
any activity.

To make sure we catch it,
Phil is setting up

surveillance cameras
all around our replica camp,

cannon,

the pasture where many
soldiers died,

and the tree line where
our witness saw full-body

apparitions of
the Phantom Regiment.

Once we're set up,
I lay out my plan.

We actually have three
trigger objects, Phil.

The cannon, the camp,
and I'm gonna charge down

this hill just like the cavalry
would have done.

OK, it's like our version
of a cavalry reenactment.

And when I yell "fire,"
let it rip!

-You got it.
-[Heather] All right.

-You ready?
-Yep, get this thing loaded.

[Heather]
All right, let's do it.

[suspenseful music plays]

Loaded.

Whoo!
Cavalry has charge.

[Heather] Fire!

[Phil]
All right, Heather!

[Phil] Fire!

Wow!
That was really loud.

All right.
Stay on walkie.

All right.

With all our triggers in place,
we get right to work.

I'll be keeping an eye
on the monitors for any activity

while also doing
a call-and-response session

with the Spirit Box.

Phil will move toward the tree
line, keeping his eyes peeled

for any of the shadowy soldiers
witnesses have reported.

He's also equipped with
a metal detector to see

if he can uncover any
direct evidence of the battle

that we could use
in our investigation.

[Phil] I want to see if I can
experience some of these very

bold claims that people are
talking about.

And if this is where
the South Cavalry was camped,

maybe some of that history
has been left behind.

Now I've just got to find it.

I haven't seen anything
at the surface.

There's something
solid in here.

What is that?

Oh, a horseshoe.

Look at those nails.
Those do not look modern.

They look flat.

This could be a sign
of cavalry.

Tangible evidence that
could be from the exact moment

in history that brought us here.

I'm going to get some images of
this so we can try to date it.

I'm at
the southern battlefield.

This area is where
General Farnsworth

was ordered to his death.

And it's a shot bullet.
So you can see the front of it.

It's been flattened.

These are what they called
"Minié balls."

It's not because they're small.

They're actually named after
a French named Minié,

and it has one, two,
three lines on the side,

which means this

was Union.

Absolutely amazing.

Why do I need to run?

I saw a black shadow run
right across the field.

It was right at the edge
of that light.

We've been heading

right into these woods.

Are you a soldier?

If you show yourself,
I'll take it as a yes.

Ooh, got one.

Oh, boy.

In November 1863,
President Abraham Lincoln

arrives in Gettysburg
to deliver his historic address.

But before he does,
he wants to do two things.

First, unsurprisingly,
is to visit the battlefield.

Second, very surprisingly,
is to meet a notoriously cranky

Gettysburg resident,
John Burns.

That's because, on the day of
the battle, 69-year-old Burns

watches the Confederates march
into his beloved town.

But instead of fleeing,
he grabs his antique musket,

dons an oversized top hat,

and joins the Union
frontlines uninvited.

The soldiers are skeptical,

but Burns makes
a massive impact,

shooting multiple
Confederate officers

before becoming injured himself.

In the aftermath of the Union
victory, old Mr. Burns becomes

an overnight folk hero.

In 1903, on the 40th
anniversary of the battle,

a statue is even erected
in his honor.

It really brings a whole new
meaning to "Not in My Backyard."

[Heather]
It's all sorts of movement
right there.

Disappeared.

Exactly.
That bullet was in battle.

I mean, these are
incredible finds.

-Think you can use it?
-Yeah, I think I can.

And I want to try something
specific with this.

But first, I need...

[Phil] All right.

[Heather] How old do you think
this tree is?

[Phil]
Probably 200 years old.

[Heather] Exactly.
It's a witness tree.

Soldiers could have ridden
right past this,

taken refuge
underneath its limbs,

maybe even taken cover
from bullets.

It's true.

[Heather]
In some paranormal circles,
witness trees are believed

to hold residual imprints
of traumatic past events,

perhaps keeping
spiritual energy for centuries.

Being close to it could
increase our chances of making

contact with
the Phantom Regiment,

especially using the violent
trigger object Phil found.

I want to try to communicate
with the spirits around us

using this bullet as
a pendulum, and to cover

our bases, we'll put an audio

if we can get any EVPs.

The soldiers of General
Farnsworth's unit fight on,

believing they're locked in
an endless battle at Gettysburg.

Heather believes she's gathered
enough evidence to show that

Farnsworth's 1st Brigade of
the 3rd Division Cavalry Corps

is indeed the so-called
"Phantom Regiment."

Farnsworth and 97 of his men,
mowed down on a suicide mission

162 years ago, are seemingly
haunting the battlefield still.

And Heather believes
they aren't the only spirits

that made contact.

of the Jennie Wade House...

...she believes the shadow
figure caught in the photos is

not the ghost
of murdered Jennie,

but rather the sharpshooter
that killed her.

After weeks of extensive
historical research,

unfortunately, we are unable
to put a name to the soldier

whose stray bullet took
innocent Jennie's life,

or definitively confirm
which side he fought for,

to see him in Heather's photos.

However, one piece of evidence
did not stand up to scrutiny.

After reviewing the mysterious
black shapes Phil saw

on the FLIR, they turned out

to be just a glitch
on the FLIR's monitor.

And as for our surveillance
cameras, they caught nothing

out of the ordinary
during our search of

the Southern battlefield.

But there was one final
shocking piece of evidence

from the bloody grounds
of Gettysburg.

Our microphones picked up
the whizzing sound that Heather

and Phil heard.

The results were astonishing.

The noise you hear matches
that of a bullet

displacing the air around it.

by a.59-caliber Minié ball,

just like the ones used
in the Civil War.

After all they experienced
with the ghosts of Gettysburg,

Heather thinks it really
could be a residual echo

from Farnsworth's
tragic last charge.

And speaking of shots,
the team had one more to take

before leaving Gettysburg
for good.
