almost like a arrow.

That looks
exactly like a turtle.

to a cavern entrance
closer to the treasure trove.

out on Blind Frog Ranch.

He's cut the locks
on our gate,

and he's on the ranch now.

a deputy out there?

[emergency operator] Okay.
Are you on the property now?

[Charlie] No,
but I'm headed out
that direction right now.

[emergency operator]
We'll send someone out.

[call disconnects]

[Charlie] Holy [bleep].

That [bleep] pulled
something metal

out of the ground.

-[tense music playing]
-[Duane] What the hell?

What the [bleep]?

Have you buried
anything out there?

We're going to have to try
to catch him before he leaves.

like a skunk.

we don't know what it was.

a four-foot cylinder,

about that big around,

had some red lighting
on the top of it.

to dig it up.

But it was
in this hole right here.

a clue what that deal is.

it was a cylinder
coming out right here.

Duane gathers the team

to pore over the footage
of the break-in.

[James] So what's going on?

So we had
some intruders last night.

-Oh, man.
-Yep.

Were these
the same trespassers
from last year?

-I don't think so.
-[Charlie] I don't think so.

I think this is
something totally,
totally different.

Those guys from last year,
they were blatant.

-[Chad] Yeah, they were.
-They weren't trying
to hide anything.

-[Chad] They're digging holes.
-This guy is trying
to sneak in here.

[Chad] Yeah, exactly.

In the middle of the night.

Dude's got a mask on.

[Charlie] Those trespassers
were digging tunnels,

looking for gold.

This guy was up
to something else altogether.

[Chad] He's [bleep].

[narrator] Last year,
Chad and Charlie arrived

to discover trespassers
on the ranch...

to steal the treasure.

They've been sneaking
on our property

without permission.

[narrator] Duane obtained
a court order

to bar them from the ranch.

But now, a new intruder is
invading Blind Frog.

At 1 o'clock,
I got a notification.

There was someone
on the property.

So this is the front gate
right here.

Watch this [bleep].

[Chad] That's him. He had
bolt cutters, cut the lock.

Look at this.

-Is that a shovel in his hand?
-[Chad] Yeah, a shovel.

[Josh] Looks like bod--
it is body armor.

[Charlie] Yep,
it's an outer carry vest.

I wore one for years.

[music continues playing]

What the hell is he doing?

[Chad] Look at that,

[Eric] What the hell is
that thing?

That's crazy.

[Chad] Look how long it is.

The surveillance cameras show

an armed trespasser

unearthing
a four-foot metal cylinder

with flashing lights
on each end.

[Eric] Looks heavy.

Looks like he's struggling
a little bit with it.

Right?

Yeah.

-[Eric] You have lights
on either end.
- [James] Yeah.

Buried underground.

[Eric] And so
you've never seen

anything like this?

You've never seen
anybody digging?

When did you install
this system?

You know, I put
those cameras up months ago.

[Josh] And if there's
any motion in that direction,

the cameras
automatically turn on.

And we already have, like,
90 days of video

stored up
in the cloud right now.

There's Charlie right there.

these people monitoring
the ranch here

are looking for treasure.

They're not just here
spinning their wheels.

But this is ours,

and we're not going to let

he went to great lengths

to come in here,

break the locks,

went right to the spot,

dug it up,

and took it out of here.

So it's something important.

We're sitting on a fortune
here at the ranch.

There's no telling
who's going to try to come

and take it from us.

He's been here before,

I'd like to look
at that excavation
of the hole...

coming out here,

Our goal is
to get into that cave system,

and that's what
I intend to do.

[Chad] So Josh and I are
working on a lead.

So the other day,
we were following the path
of the underwater cavern.

So we hike up to this ridge.

We're looking
for any kind of clues at all.

We get up
on top of the mountain there.

There's this, like, big rock

that we're like...

"Holy [bleep], man.
That looks man-made."

[narrator] After discovering
a blocked underwater tunnel,

which they believe is leading

to the Aztec
treasure chamber...

We just have to find
another way

to drop
into that tunnel system.

[narrator] ...Chad
and Josh are tracing

the path
of the tunnel from above,

searching for another opening.

[Josh] If people were living
in this cave system

and traveling in
and out of it,

there has to be

naturally occurring
ventilation.

There must be other entrances
to the surface,

so we got to go find it.

[narrator] A mile and a half
from the ranch,

they have uncovered
an unusual marker

pointing to a turtle-shaped
rock formation.

This is great news.

I mean, those are
probably Aztec stone markers.

-Really?
-[James] Yeah,
it may be a site

that's been used for hundreds,
if not thousands of years.

[narrator] Throughout
ancient North America,

turtles were regarded
as a symbol of protection,

and to the Aztecs,

turtles were a representation
of caves

and the underworld.

According to written records,

indigenous tribes used turtles

to mark buried treasure,

with the head
directing seekers

toward the valuables,

while a removed head

indicates the bounty has
been recovered.

So we go over there,

and the turtle right here

has his head on it.

And they say
if the head is still on there,

the treasure is still there.

Whenever they take
the treasure out,

they knock the head off

to know
that the treasure is gone.

And the turtle points towards

either the next marker

or the treasure.

[Duane] So they carved that
out of sandstone, yeah?

And they would take a rock

that kind of looked
like the shape they wanted to,

and they could just
modify it a bit.

And we're not talking like

they were carving
the statue of David.

so that they would know
when they come back,

still here

-at the ranch.

We need to go back over there

to see what we can find.

is to follow the direction
of the turtle's head,

hoping it will lead them

to the opening
of the treasure chamber

that is holding
Montezuma's gold.

It looks like we got
a possible entrance there.

We're going to follow
the direction
of the turtle marker,

which, in my opinion, could
point toward the entrance

to get into
the underground cave system.

This is another marker.

Following the stone markers,
Chad and Josh have uncovered

another clue.

A mysterious bear shape carved

next to the opening of
a possible ventilation shaft.

not a coincidence.

This is
the third marker in a row
along the cavern path.

This is purposeful.

It meant something.

My guess is these markers
are a wayfinding system.

This is the street signs
of some ancient civilization.

Maybe it's the Aztec.
I don't know.

But these markers were
placed here for a reason.

We've got some work
to do here. We've got
to get in here

and see what's underneath
all this rubble.

But we should be careful.

Bear symbols can indicate
some kind of danger.

Most indigenous tribes

have long seen the bear
as a symbol of courage
and strength.

However, to the Aztecs,

bears were associated
with a powerful god,

Tezcatlipoca,

whose presence was seen
as a destructive force.

When used as a marker,

it was a sign of a death trap.

Hidden treasure
is hidden treasure
for a reason.

We really don't know
what to expect.

So you've got to be
super, super careful.

There's a lot of
treasure hunters
that don't come back.

I know treasure hunters
that have died.

We don't know
what's ahead of us
in this unknown cave.

If there's a great treasure
down there, people will

try and protect that.

That's not a game.

Those pitfalls can
get you killed.

or what even is in there.

the treasure.

something like a vent shaft

with, like, a bear marker
next to it.

The Aztec used iconography

and pictographs,
pictures that told the story.

This bear could be
some type of symbol

that would show direction

or some type
of ceremonial usage.

Was there more symbols
or was it just that one?

That's the only thing
we could find at the cave.

But it definitely
could be an air vent
down with that flooded tunnel.

[Josh] It's the trail
of the treasure, boys.

what it looks like.

of difficulties would we have

in trying to get
into this cave

a potential ventilation shaft

that could lead into
the underground cavern system.

what I believe is a bear.

hidden caves
and burial chambers.

They would use
something like this
for a tally board

to keep track of

maybe bullion that
they were storing,

carve this into this rock.

and believed by scholars

The Aztec didn't have
a written language
like we understand it.

They used pictographs
that told the story.

So they would use
objects like stone tablets
to record information.

But what we're seeing here
isn't their normal system
of writing.

It looks more
like a counting system.

trying to keep track of

the same size as the ingot

So this could be
a big receipt.

took underground somewhere,

then the entrance
has to be nearby.
