[Chad] Last season,
we found a lot of strange
artifacts and clues

searching for
Montezuma's treasure.

I want to take a closer look
at all the evidence
we've found so far

and bring in experts and have
them go through everything

and figure out exactly
what we have here.

Because we need to know
where we need

to put our resources
to try to find that gold.

All right. So, I want
to assess kind of where
we're at right now.

I think the first thing
we need to talk about
is that rumble.

Absolutely.

of the dig season...

My money's on that South Cave.

In an attempt to enter
the Aztec underground,

Chad targeted the South Cave,
a location he believes

leads directly
into the keyhole chamber,

a mysterious cavern
that extends under the ranch

where the team believes
the Aztec gold is hidden.

This is huge.

Isn't this wild?

But while investigating
the South Cave...

...Chad and Eric encountered
a strange seismic phenomenon
known as a rumble.

So this rumble came
out of nowhere.

What the hell is that?

Everything started shaking
and we almost got trapped
in that cave.

What the hell?

The weird thing is, when Chad
and I felt it in the cave,

I mean, I've experienced
earthquakes before.

So typically you'll feel them.
[imitates rumbling]

And this was
nothing like that.

But it was definitely
a rumble, we felt it.

this is super dangerous.

If we're crawling in caves,
we have the potential
of collapse

at all times, and we really
need to figure out
what this is.

[Eric] So this rumble,
or ground shaking,
is really strange.

I can't explain it,
and if I can't explain it,

I can't stop it
from happening again.

We felt it throughout
the Blind Frog Ranch,

but we couldn't seem to detect
any earthquakes in the region.

There's nothing showing from
a natural seismic event here.

I don't know.

The thing is, I not only
checked the USGS database

for earthquakes,
which is quite extensive.

None were seen
during that time period.

[narrator] The United States
Geological Survey

is a government database
that tracks

all registered
earthquake activity.

With no record
of an earthquake in the area,

Eric invited seismologist
Hector Estrella to the ranch
to run some tests.

My name is Hector Estrella
and I work in the geology,

seismology and
geophysics area.

Eric called me and
he mentioned that

there was some rumblings
that he wanted my input on.

[narrator]
Using a seismograph,
Hector recorded

a series of strange vibrations
under Blind Frog Ranch.

-[Eric] Oh, wow.
-[Hector] Whoa, look at that.

You have something
going on here,

something strange.

Something is causing
that ground vibration, and
it's occurring locally.

But whatever's going on,
is not caused
by natural earthquakes.

We checked that.

So it's got to be
something else.

Something strange
is happening in this ranch.

[Eric] So I want
to get in touch
with my friend Hector.

He was going to take a look
at the data that we recorded
out here

and see if he can have
some further interpretation.

Uh, let's see.

Hey, Hector. How are you?

[Hector] Hey, Eric,
how you doing?

[Eric] Hector, when we set up
that seismograph,

you said you could take 'em
back and get a further look
at 'em

and get some
further interpretation.

Were you able to...
to glean anything from that?

[Hector] So we've been
collecting data
with the seismograph

for the past few months,
and we continue to get

intermittent seismic activity
that doesn't match

the available government data
for the region.

So I did a little research
looking for possible causes

for this intermittent
vibration.

And I came across something
very interesting.

You know, fairly recently,
about a year and a half ago
in Greenland,

there was a massive landslide
that collapsed

into the waters
of the Dickson Fjord.

A fjord is basically
an enclosed body of water

created when the glacier
travels and erodes over
millions of years.

And what happened is
this massive landslide

collapsed into the water,
creating a tsunami.

And bounced from the other
shore back and forth,
back and forth,

creating what's essentially
an earthquake.

[narrator] The event at
Dickson Fjord, Greenland

created powerful shockwaves
that reverberated

around the world
for nine days.

[Eric] Thinking about
this phenomena,

my theory is that maybe these
repetitive seismic events that

are recorded in the ranch
are caused by

subterranean water flow
reverberating just like
the Dickson Fjord.

It could cause
that kind of vibration.

We do have faults here,
and we have shallow
groundwater,

and when you have shallow
groundwater and cave systems,

you can actually have
underground rivers.

And so, maybe there's
a displacement of water
or I don't know.

-But, I mean, it was big.
-You're damn right it was.

Maybe you have a blockage,

maybe a large boulder or
a large rock that
all of a sudden

gets pushed by
the pressure of the water.

And releases all that energy
all at once.

[narrator] Hector theorizes
the high pressure

water system under Blind Frog
was suddenly released

from a shifting boulder
or underground dam...

[bleep]

...triggering the intense
rumbling vibrations
they've experienced.

[Eric] What would be
your recommendations
moving forward?

[Hector] Take readings from
other parts of the ranch
simultaneously.

Maybe that way we can narrow
down where these vibrations
are originating.

Then the extent of it maybe.

That's what we gotta do.

So that rumble we experienced
is still a mystery,
and it's super dangerous.

Blind Frog Ranch,

the team is reviewing their
evidence from last year
to strategize their plan

to locate the lost Aztec gold.

[Chad] If we're crawling
in caves,

we have the potential
of collapse at all times.

So obviously exploring
the South Cave is on hold.

Something to look at
in the future.

Absolutely.

[narrator] But while the
South Cave is shut down,

it might have provided
one final clue...

Wow.

...prior to its collapse.

-Chad, look at these.
-What the [bleep]?

This is handmade,
hand carved.

No way they could've gotten in
through that opening.

[Chad] Yeah. Had to get in
some other way, though.

Let's get a sample of these.

[narrator] The team took
samples of mysterious
hewn logs

that they found deep
inside the cave.

However, this wasn't
the only location

they came across these
mysterious wooden artifacts.

Eric and Chad also found
similar hewn timber

at an abandoned mine
two miles north of the ranch.

This is everywhere.
Look at this.

[Eric] When we were up there,
I happened to take
some samples

of the timbers up there.

So I have those samples here.

So here's where it gets
really interesting.

I got the wood tested
from both sites.

We got the results back,
and it turned out
the absolute age of the wood

is about 380 years old.

-And so we have
a correlation here.
-Yeah.

So if these samples are
of the same age, basically,
roughly 400 years old,

it could mean the same people,

I mean, the Aztecs even, were
inside the cave here
at the ranch

and were able to travel
miles underground.

Between the open pit to the
north and the South Cave.

[Chad] No [bleep] way.

Holy [bleep].

[narrator] Hewn logs have
been used by indigenous tribes
for centuries

to fortify tunnels
and underground structures.

Conformation that the logs
in the South Cave

and the timbers at the open
pit mine are a match,

suggests the Aztecs
constructed their underground
civilization

to have multiple entrances

and exits to move the gold
into the keyhole chamber.

There could be
a tunnel system,
an extensive tunnel system,

between the open pit to the
north, and the South Cave.

[Chad] That's amazing.

So we know that there's an
entrance to the keyhole
chamber north of the property.

Yep. There's so many
possibilities here,

gentlemen, we've got to
prioritize what we're going to
tackle next.

[narrator] Across the 160
acres of the ranch,

the team has been exploring
several sites,

searching for an entrance
into the Aztec underground.

Last season, with the collapse
of the South Cave,
Duane Ollinger

doubled his excavation efforts
in search of a hidden entrance

below the Bead Site,
a rock formation
that sits on the tail end

of the keyhole chamber.

You know, that Bead
Site's got artifacts.

It's got so much stuff going
on, and as we dig down,
I think we'll find the tomb.

[James] We found a lot of new
artifacts at the Bead Site.

It's possible that it could
have been something to do
with the Aztecs.

Oh, my God,
it's a radial bead.

It's a bead with
a spiral pattern.

If we can date those artifacts
or find any evidence about
the origin,

that would be fascinating.

Something definitely
to look for.

Give us a lot of clues
on who was there
and who knows what's in there?

the artifacts mined from
the Bead Site...

an American
history professor...

What have we got?

I'm Dr. Roger Blomquist.

I am a historian with a focus
in the American West.

Chad has asked me
to come out here

and look at some of the
artifacts they've found.

And see if I could put them
into an historical context
for them

to help them understand
how they got here
and the significance of them.

[Chad] We got to show you
something, man.

[James] Look at this.

Look what it's made out of.

[Roger] It's a radial bead.

[narrator] Chad hopes
the objects can help
the team better understand

the background
of the Bead Site
and provide clues to locate

the buried entrance
into the keyhole chamber

and the treasure.

[Roger] Well,
this is incredible.

[James] Isn't that amazing?

[narrator] A radial bead
is a small circular stone

with a center borehole
that was known to be worn

by Aztec nobility on their
ceremonial headdresses.

[Roger] Well, I can tell this
is Aztecian by the level of
detail and tool work.

It's almost
surgical precision.

[narrator] The precision
of Aztec stone carving
is well documented,

but their highly sophisticated
techniques weren't only used
for decorative objects.

The Aztecs, we know that they
were performing successful
brain surgeries.

-[Chad] Really?
-[Roger] Yes.

We found the skulls that
had been operated on and
that had healed.

That's amazing.

[narrator] Neurosurgery owes
its origins to Mesoamerican
cultures.

Aztec medicine men were the
first to treat head injuries
and perform trephination,

the act of perforating
the skull with a surgical
instrument,

to relieve pressure
or internal bleeding.

They had the technology
to be able to

core drill these out
of the jade and then drill
the holes in them.

The jade bead looks like
it could go back hundreds,
if not thousands, of years.

And for that
to be found up here,

that's the most fascinating
thing I've seen up here today.

How did it get here?

Fantastic.

Let's find out
where they're from.

Let's find out what
the composition is
on them.

breakdown of the beads'
composition,

a material scientist,

out to Blind Frog Ranch
to help them identify

and evaluate materials
that they found.

fluorescent gun.

The X-ray tube and detector
right here in the nose.

We can see what elements
are here in the impurities

through X-ray fluorescent
spectrometry.

[narrator] An XRF gun,
or X-ray fluorescent
spectroscopy device

emits X-rays
that can identify the elements
found in the stone

and determine
its material makeup.

[Bob] Let's see what
we can see here.

What do we got, Bob?
What do we got?

Okay. Let's see.

Mmm.

[exhales]

It's got iron.

Potassium. So, you know
your clays are there,
right, Eric?

[Eric] Yep.

So what does that all mean?

[Bob] Wow.

These are all indicative
of what you'd find in jade.

[Chad] Wow.

That's amazing.

This is awesome. Great find.

[narrator] Jade was a prized
mineral of the Aztec kingdom

that was worn only by rulers
such as kings and nobility.

This finding suggests
that the Bead Site

was a sacred religious site
used by Aztecan royalty.

Jade with the green in it,
and it would have been those
who could afford to have it.

Wasn't the sort of thing
that a common man would have.

So we're looking at nobility,
aristocracy, kings, queens,
princes, priests.

You're basically saying that
it was in possession
of the elites.

Wow.

The experts uncover startling
new clues about the Bead Site.

[Bob] So that's not
the copper bead.

[Chad] Then what
the hell is it?

[narrator]
And discover the truth about
the chamber hiding beneath it.

This site is a tomb.

At Blind Frog Ranch,
the team is seeking answers

about the artifacts they've
unearthed at the Bead Site
last season.

[Roger] The jade bead
looks like

it could go back hundreds,
if not thousands, of years.

It's amazing. Great find.

[narrator] But the jade radial
bead isn't the only relic
that was uncovered.

What have we got here?

They look like they've been
done by hand.

We also have some copper
beads that were found.

We'd like to get
your thoughts on those

and maybe analyze them and
see exactly what's in them.

[narrator] Copper beads
were first forged by
an indigenous tribe

known as the Old Copper
Culture, a mysterious group
who inhabited

the Great Lakes region
of North America

over 7,000 years ago.

They're very uniform in style
and hollowed out almost
as if it was cast

instead of pounded into shape.

[narrator] If this bead
is copper, it would suggest
that Aztec ancestors

were inhabiting the Utah
territory thousands of years
before

the reign of their empire
in Mexico.

So how do you think
it got here?

[Roger] Well, there's only
one way to find out.

Let's check the composition
of the bead.

This will tell us
what we're working with.

Here's your sample back.
We'll set it down here,

and then we can
read the results here.

There's a little bit of sulfur
from the corrosion.

Yeah, it was about
eight-tenths of lead.

Wow, 28% zinc.

So that's not a copper bead.

[Chad] Then what
the hell is it?

Those are brass beads.

[Chad] Really?

So what does that all mean?

It tells us that it's brass
and it may be within the last
few hundred years.

[Chad] Huh.

[narrator] Unlike copper,
brass was not smelted
until the 1700s,

which means the artifact
is much younger than the team
previously thought.

So if this is from the 1700s
or 1800s, who would be making
something like that,

-or where did it
originate from?
-Spain.

Spain was in the Americas.

And so it could have been
down in Mesoamerica.

It could have been Mexico.

It's very likely that it came
from Europe somewhere,

but that's not nearly
as important as how
it got here.

That the odds are,
in my opinion,

that it came through
Mexico City, up to the ranch
up here.

[narrator] Dr. Blomquist
believes that the brass bead
was cast in Europe

by Spaniards in the 1700s,
was brought to Mexico City

after the fall
of the Aztec empire

when Mexico was under Spanish
rule, then made its way north
to Blind Frog Ranch,

most likely in the Spanish
crown's pursuit
of the Aztec gold.

[Roger] Who was trading this
and what did they
want in return?

That's the story
I want to know.

[narrator] With Bob's analysis
of the artifacts
from the Bead Site,

there is now
even more questions
about the site's true purpose.

Searching for answers,
the team shows Roger video

of the mysterious alter
they uncovered
while excavating last season.

[Charlie] At the Bead Site,

we have found an altar,
and above that we have,

like smokestacks
coming out of it.

Is the altar underground
in the caves,
or is it outside of the caves?

It's underground.

So that's what
you're looking at here.

[Roger] Wow, this is amazing.

[Charlie] Look at that.

[Roger] As I was watching
the video, it looked like
one of the rocks

on the outside might
have been worked.

It was very geometric.

Was it constructed, or was it
a natural feature that had
been manipulated?

-[Josh] Look at that.
-[Charlie] Holy [bleep].

No, it was constructed,
you could tell
once we got it excavated.

Pull the front off of it,
then you could get in there

and see it was totally
connected to the smokestack.

Look at back there.

This is next level stuff
that we're talking about.

It's worked stone,
it's put together well,
constructed well.

[Charlie] Yeah, absolutely.

And when we removed
some more dirt,
there was artifacts inside.

Inside of this altar,
we found charred skulls.

So that's what
you're looking at here.

You've got an altar down below
and then a raised platform
on top.

Well, to me, this is all
very Aztecian in nature.

By all means, this could be
an underground sacrificial
altar.

Where somebody would be
officiating to accept
that sacrifice.

There's a cliff face there
that could have been
right on top of that.

So when you find a sacrificial
altar, it's not uncommon
to find bones

to find remains,
possibly human remains.

We know about the cave system
down in Teotihuacan

underneath the Pyramid
of the Sun,
that there's all caverns

emanating out from
underneath of there.

[narrator] The
Pyramid of the Sun

is a four-sided
Aztec structure

with a flat top used
for religious ceremonies.

However, when archeologists
excavated underneath
the structure,

they uncovered a large cavern
with human remains,

which were sacrificial
offerings to their gods.

[Roger] So this would be
something that would be
very comparable to that.

And I took Duane down
to Mexico City

and we went underground
at Teotihuacan.

So that he could see
the similarities
between there and Mexico.

And what we're seeing up here
at Blind Frog Ranch.

So you know exactly
what I'm talking about.

[narrator] According to Roger,
the Aztecs could have used

the rugged rock landscape
of the Bead Site

as a natural,
hallowed stone structure

to mimic the religious
structures of their fallen
capital city.

But what's underneath
the Bead Site
could be even more shocking.

One thing to keep in mind
is that the Aztecs had similar

practices with the Egyptians,
they buried their leaders

with possessions and
with sacrificed individuals.

They took his
earthly treasures
and stored them with him.

And so it's a very spiritual
altar where sacred offerings
were being given.

[Charlie] That's the top
of the skull.

[Roger] This would be
entirely possible

the site is a tomb.

the revelation
of a possible tomb

under the Bead Site
poses the question,

who is buried beneath it?

[Charlie] If there's a tomb,
whose would it be?

It had to have been a king,
maybe even Montezuma himself.

[narrator]
But unearthing it could
come at a cost.

This is a place of power.

The skull is like a warning.

You guys need to be really,
really careful about
what you're doing.

[narrator] As the team gathers
to review the evidence

from last season,
Dr. Roger Blomquist

has now reviewed all the
findings from the Bead Site...

[Roger] Wow, this is amazing.

...and believes there could
potentially be a tomb lying
beneath it.

You've got an alter down below
and then a raised platform
on top.

The site is a tomb.

That's amazing.

[Roger] Aztec kings were
buried in their tombs
with their possessions.

They took his earthly
treasures and stored them
with him in this tomb.

[narrator] The idea that the
recently deceased could carry
possessions into the afterlife

dates back
to the ancient Egyptians,

whose pharaohs were
surrounded with grave goods.

[Roger] The Aztecs interred
in tombs, much like
the Egyptians

but without the mummification.

[narrator] Unlike Egyptians
who were mummified,

Aztec kings were
sometimes cremated,

believing this practice
would help them
ascend into the afterlife.

[Roger] So these smokestacks
could be for cremation.

There were times
that the Aztecs
cremated their leaders.

Part of the belief was
that the smoke would take them
up to the afterlife.

And so it's a very
spiritual altar

where sacred offerings
were being given.

It was very similar to what
you see in Mesoamerica.

[narrator] Besides gold and
treasure, archeologists have
also uncovered

one other common item
in the tombs of Aztec kings.

The remains
of human sacrifice.

I think we have that here
based on what we have found.

If there's a tomb,
whose would it be?

It had to have been a king.

Maybe even Montezuma himself.

[narrator] It is unclear what
became of Montezuma's body

after he was killed
by Cortes' army.

Some accounts say
his body was mutilated

and scattered across Mexico
by the Spaniards,

while others believe he was
cremated and carried out
of the Aztec capital

with his gold. But to this day
neither a tomb nor
physical evidence

of Montezuma's remains
have ever been found.

So while defending the Aztec
capital from the Spanish,
Montezuma was killed.

So it was really Montezuma's
brother, Cuitlahuac, who was
the 10th emperor

of the Aztec Empire, that
ordered all the gold to be

taken out of the capital
and taken north.

But maybe he brought
more than just the gold.

So if Roger is right and
the Bead Site connects
to an underground tomb,

inside, we might not only
find Montezuma's treasure.

We might even find
Montezuma himself.

This might sound crazy,
but I have a theory.

Montezuma's brother was really
the person that defeated
Cortes and got the treasure.

He supposedly died,
which I don't believe
really happened.

I think that Montezuma's
brother survived

and brought the treasure
from Mexico City.

Possibly along with his
brother, Montezuma's remains.

To bury them together
in their native homeland.

So, Roger, what do you think?

The first thing that comes
to mind is the petroglyphs
of the three kings.

[narrator] Just 20 miles
outside Blind Frog,

is a geological site
known as Capitol Reef.

It is home to a series
of petroglyphs
known as the Three Kings.

When I saw it,
the immediate impression I got

was that it was very Aztecian
or Mesoamerican jewelry,

headdresses, belts.
It felt like a sacred site.

It looked like family that
was left as guardians over
the temple site.

[Charlie] So these petroglyphs
that you're talking about
near the ranch,

is that telling the story
of the Aztecs?

It's not necessarily
the history

of the Aztecs in Mesoamerica,
but the return to Uinta Basin.

[James] Maybe that's what
the petroglyphs depict.

Montezuma's successor,
his brother,

protecting Montezuma's
treasure,

relocating his empire
and possibly giving them

a final safe resting place
here in Utah.

And the exciting thing is,
you're finding jewelry.

Jade with the green in it
and everything

that it would have been
nobility, aristocracy.

[James] Well, if they were
relocating their empire,

the petroglyphs are kind of
setting up what the central
location is,

which appears to be right here
on Blind Frog Ranch.

[Roger] Well,
I hope you guys find
what you're looking for.

[narrator] While the artifacts
from the Bead Site

have given the team
hard evidence

about the Aztec presence
on the ranch,

some of the things they've
encountered are harder
to explain.

-[Josh] What the hell is that?
-[Charlie] Same damn thing.

Ripped the head off.

[narrator] Over the years,
the team's strange experiences
have continued to increase.

That's a kill right there.

[narrator] And last season,
they had a series
of encounters

with a strange
wolf-like creature.

Hey!

[Chad] We have no idea
what these things are.

It's almost like you can
feel something following you.

So I'm asking my dad's friend,
Mark Julian to come out
and take a look
