The Back Door is gonna
get us in this mountain.

are back in the Philippines

with a new team,
continuing their search

for Yamashita's gold.

‐ We're gonna find a way
to get to this treasure.

‐ Like many others,

John believes Japanese
General Tomoyuki Yamashita

took billions of dollars
in treasure

looted by Japan during WWII

and buried it
in the Philippines,

including somewhere
in this mountain.

Following a series
of mysterious symbols

they believe
were left by Yamashita,

the team is investigating
three sites‐‐

a waterfall...

‐ John: This waterfall is
hiding something.

‐ ...a camouflaged tunnel
they uncovered last year...

‐ John:
We are in the mountain, boys!

‐ ...and a location
known as the Back Door.

Can they finally discover the...

‐ Five months into
their painstaking search,

John and his team
are working multiple sites

as they race to locate
Yamashita's treasure.

At the bore hole site,
his brother Rob

is trying to reach
a treasure chamber

they hope lies 300 feet
below this dense rock.

But there's a problem.

Their drill's been
knocked off course,

and they desperately need
to get it back in line.

‐ We need to make corrections

in order to try
to bring that back

and aim right where we
gotta go.

Andrew, we ready
to fire it up?

‐ They must be precise,

since they hope to drop
a camera through this hole

to see inside
the treasure chamber,

a chamber
that's still 700 feet away.

‐ We're gonna make our speed
and pressure adjustments,

drill a bit, then we'll
send our survey tool down

and see if we've
actually made an impact.

‐ To ensure
they're on the right path,

they check
a core rock sample.

‐ This is our most recent
sample here.

It looks like we're going
right back

through some really
good rock.

This is a giant relief
to see this.

I was really worried
about whether or not

we were gonna come back
into some stable enough rock

that we could actually even
make the corrections,

and right now
it looks like we will.

‐ Meanwhile,
over at a second location

known as the tunnel site,

father and son miners
Geo and Levi

encounter another roadblock.

‐ So inside of our tunnel
we actually had

another collapse
that we came into.

We were assessing whether we
should try to go around it

or look over the top of it

and see if we're
gonna go through it.

Turn your light off
real quick, Geo.

There's light coming
through here.

‐ With the tunnel blocked,
they ask Rob

to join them for a smoke bomb
test to find the opening.

They hope it reveals
another way into the mountain.

‐ 10 minutes from now I'm gonna
throw this thing, okay?

‐ Okay, sounds good, man.
‐ All right.

‐ Their goal‐‐
locate a tunnel maze

inside the mountain
leading to treasure.

‐ It would be extremely
difficult

to find where this opening
might be underground.

Here we go.

So I'm gonna go up
in the air with the drone.

We're gonna send smoke
coming out of that opening,

see if we can find out
exactly where this opening is,

and then we can go up there
and explore it.

‐ Geo should've set it off
by now.

Should be getting smoke
any time.

Can you come in super wide
on that?

Hopefully we can see
some sort of smoke

coming out
through the canopy.

Man,
I'm not seeing anything yet.

‐ Yeah, it can take a little
while for that smoke to rise up,

especially
through a canopy like this.

What's that right there?

‐ That's smoke, all right.

‐ Wow, look at that.
That is a huge hole, man.

‐ I'll mark the GPS coordinates.

You can put them
right in the handheld,

walk right over there.

‐ As Rob and Levi find
a promising lead...

tries another way
into the mountain.

‐ That was a big one.

‐ He's at a place the team
calls the Back Door site.

They found it last year
and think it could contain

an entrance
to the tunnel system.

‐ Is it the entrance?

‐ I don't see anything in here.

‐ But they couldn't find
an access point.

After a new scan,

they've pinpointed
a possible way in.

‐ I think that if you're looking
for an access point into here,

I think your best bet
is through this spot.

‐ But Steve has to get
past a big obstacle

before he can begin digging.

‐ I gotta take a look at this.

I have a really unstable
foundation for this rock.

‐ Whoo!

‐ If this boulder falls
into the hole,

it will completely block him
from getting into the back door.

‐ It's only a matter of time
before it's gonna cave in.

I get one shot at this.

I was able to slide it back,

but I almost
flipped the machine doing it.

That was the scariest thing
that I've done in a while.

‐ John and Rick
join Rob and the miners

as they follow GPS
coordinates...

‐ Right up that way.

‐ ...towards the other
tunnel opening

the smoke bomb revealed.

‐ John: We need to find out

what's going on
with this tunnel.

Hopefully it's gonna help us
get one step closer

to the void space
under the waterfall,

one step closer to, you know,
solving this mystery.

‐ Rick: Hey, over here, guys!

‐ Wow.

We got a heck of a hole
here, don't we?

This is ugly.

‐ Rick: Yeah, it is.

It certainly
wasn't what I expected.

‐ Looking at it right now,
we have a mess.

It's just a big giant hole.

I don't know if it's
so much a collapse.

I won't be able to tell till
I climb down inside this hole.

‐ Geo: Man, be careful.

‐ I see a lot
of rotten timbers.

‐ More round stock
with numbers on them.

‐ Levi: I don't know what
the numbering means at all yet.

This is clearly
the same type of timber

and same type of markings
they had

on the other end of the tunnel
where we were at.

‐ In the team's early
exploration of the tunnel,

they discovered
numbers etched

into the round stock
support posts.

‐ Stop right there.

It almost looks
like on the post

there's, like, these numbers.

‐ Despite the presence
of Western numbers,

multiple pieces of evidence
support the idea

this tunnel was built
by the Japanese.

‐ I think it's Japanese
A3 landmine.

It's made out of terracotta.

‐ The team theorizes
these numbers were left

by American POWs
forced to work in the tunnel.

‐ I can almost see
the end of the collapse.

I think that's where we were
seeing daylight through here.

‐ Didn't see any kind of
offshoot, something?

‐ This is it.
This is the end of the line.

I honestly don't think
the tunnel goes anywhere else.

‐ You're telling me
this is a tunnel

that just goes right
through the mountain?

‐ I think this is the beginning
of our tunnel

that goes through
the mountain.

Who would tunnel
right through a mountain?

‐ I have no idea, man.
All I know is this is a tunnel

that leads absolutely nowhere.

through the mountain,

it will not lead
to the treasure they seek.

of sense to us right now.

I mean, this was a lot
of work to run this tunnel

through the mountain
like this.

So we're going to regroup,
try to put our heads together

and maybe make some sense
of what this tunnel is.

work continues
at the back door,

which the team hopes
will lead to a tunnel,

possibly connected
to the waterfall void.

Now it seems like I'm just
hitting something really hard.

I believe that we're gonna

they're banking
on this hammer to get them

into a possible void space
spotted by the tech team.

‐ Being able to come down here
to the Back Door

has just been a deal‐changer

because we are feet,
literally feet away

from getting
into this mountain.

We're gonna find a way
into this void space

under the waterfall.

‐ Back at the bore hole site,

the drill is now 400 feet in.

The team needs to constantly
monitor core samples

to ensure they remain
on the right path.

‐ We're pulling another
core sample now,

and then we're gonna
keep on going.

What the heck?

That isn't good.

Well, we were in perfectly
solid rock before,

and now there's a bunch of sand
and dirt in the end of this.

Andrew, what do you make
of this? This is sand!

‐ It doesn't make any sense
with the core.

It goes from solid rock
to sand to solid rock again.

‐ Yeah.

‐ The discovery of sand
inside the mountain

rings alarm bells for John.

‐ The Japanese were infamous
for putting sand traps in.

‐ Tons, hundreds of tons of
sand, enough to kill a man.

‐ According to legend,

the Golden Lily
placed sand traps

next to their treasure sites,

awaiting
the unsuspecting diggers

who accidentally
punctured the seal.

‐ It's my theory

that there is a tube
filled with sand

and, if you got too close,

the sand would slide down
the tube and bury you.

We could be getting really
close to that treasure.

If we're hitting this sand,
it means that we're getting

particularly close
to this void space

that's underneath the waterfall

and could possibly be
the treasure room.

‐ That evening,
with puzzling new evidence

suggesting their tunnel

may be just one singular
passageway...

‐ I think this is the beginning
of our tunnel

that goes through the mountain.

‐ That doesn't make any sense.

Who would tunnel
right through a mountain?

‐ ...the team calls military
historian Craig Gottlieb,

who has helped solve other
mysteries on the mountain.

is the magazine body

of a Japanese
Type 99 Arisaka rifle.

if he can provide any insight.

‐ Craig, the tunnel that you
were in when you were here,

uh, we happened to run
into another entrance,

and it's directly on
the other side of the ridge.

It looks right now
like this tunnel

just goes right straight
through the mountain,

under the ridge,
and that's it, man.

It doesn't go anywhere.

‐ Was it just a tunnel
straight through

from one side of the ridge
to the other?

‐ As close as we can see
right now,

when we found
the new entrance,

we didn't get very far in there

and there was
a huge cave‐in.

But you can see light
all the way through.

So right now it looks like
there's nothing off to the side.

There's a possibility,

but right now it looks like
it just goes straight through.

‐ Okay, well, you know,
what you're describing‐‐

and I really don't know
a lot about treasure‐‐

but what I do know about
is Japanese fighting tactics,

and that's a typical
Japanese fighting position.

They could pop out
on either side of this ridge

and engage enemy forces.

And so, when you
tell me there's a tunnel

going straight
through a ridge, uh,

that says to me
this is a tunnel

that was built
specifically to fight.

‐ Narrator: In the early days
of World War II,

Japanese tunnel warfare was
nightmarishly effective

against Allied forces.

Just a few dozen Japanese
soldiers

operating in a connected
series of tunnels

could inflict
massive casualties,

moving from one protected
firing position to another

without ever coming
above ground.

‐ We found a disarmed landmine
on one end of the tunnel there.

Do you think that was just so

somebody couldn't back‐door
them?

‐ You know, that's very typical.

You'd find explosives on either
side of a tunnel, and yeah,

they would booby trap
the tunnel entrances.

‐ Well, that'd make
a lot more sense.

‐ Well, sorry I don't have
better news for you,

but everything you've described
for me,

the tunnel has every
hallmark of being

a Japanese tactical
fighting position,

a Japanese fortification.

So I wish I had better news.

‐ Well, you've really
shed light on

what this actually could be.

‐ I'm happy to help.

Craig's disappointing news,

John's determined to pivot,

using a new tool
recently obtained

by their U. S. researcher

a map of the mountain

with clues to many
possible treasure sites.

were known for building

protective,
defensive locations.

What is it you're trying
to protect? The treasure?

The entrance to the treasure?

Maybe this tunnel
was built by the Japanese

to protect what was going on
underneath the waterfall.

I'm more fired up than ever.

We're gonna get
under that waterfall.

‐ As a new day dawns,

at the Back Door site,

the battle against
dense bedrock continues,

and the Hammer of God
is losing.

‐ Steve, maybe over
a little to your left,

maybe a couple of feet.

of that void space,

that would be awfully
encouraging.

this whole area, Rick.

I haven't heard anything hollow,

This rock is beating the hell
out of my machine.

It's beating the hell

and right now I just think
I'm chipping into a dead end.

‐ Yeah, Steve,
I'm not hearing anything.

Maybe we should be talking

‐ I'm gonna shut
the machine off

and let's, uh,
let's discuss this.

‐ I'm not getting anywhere.

There's no edges. If you can
look, there are no edges.

There's no splits.
There's nothing.

This is a solid piece
of whatever.

I mean, this right here,

took me an hour
to get that piece.

‐ This stuff is really hard.

But we need to get access
into this mountain.

We don't have it
anywhere at this point.

I still think
this is our best bet.

I am just absolutely convinced

we are within just a few feet
of getting in there.

‐ Rick changes tactics,

swapping their massive hammer
for a backpack drill.

‐ What we're doing
with the backpack drill

is trying to get a hole down
into the void space.

If we can do that,

then we can get a camera
down the hole,

have a look at how far
we've got to go.

Then we can crank that thing up
and get going again.

We're getting there
inch by inch,

but it's not easy.

This is really hard rock.

And the backpack drill,
it's all human power.

[ drill shuts off ]

We've got to be
right there, man.

We got to keep
pushing on that thing.

‐ I'm pushing.
It's not gonna go any harder.

‐ The ground is really hard.
I mean,

I knew going into it
that it was going to be hard.

And, uh,
I get to a certain point

where I thought
it was getting softer,

and then it just sort of
seized everything.

‐ I've been pushing Steve
really hard on this project.

It's just hard work.

We've got an awful lot
of hard rock to get through,

We're not gonna get through it
by just staring at it.

We've gotta work at it
really hard.

this island

has pushed me to the extent
of all my limits.

‐ We're so close.

‐ It's a devastating blow.

Another promising lead
is a dead end.

I think that maybe I'm just
pushing this whole, uh,

Back Door thing too hard.

Maybe John's right.

Got to be a better way
in here. I don't know.

‐ Back at basecamp,
John and Rob

turn to a Golden Lily
treasure map for fresh clues.

Their stateside researcher
Bingo Minerva

received it
from their new partner,

renowned Yamashita treasure
hunter Chuck McDougald.

‐ Those two are
the original maps.

‐ These are incredible.

I've never seen anything
like this.

‐ Yeah.
‐ In any of my research.

‐ The brothers hope to find
new locations to pursue.

‐ You see this big
diamond shape here?

It's like the next prominent
feature on this map

that we have no clue about.

Chuck, there's a diamond,
a dark diamond box there.

Do you have an indication,

or do you have an idea
of what that means?

‐ Chuck: Every symbol
on these maps means something.

‐ If we can find that, I think
we can start to figure out

the rest of this stuff here
pretty easily.

So Rob and I are looking to see

if we can find what this
diamond on the map represents.

‐ We've got GPS marked out for
each one of these points,

so I've got a pretty good
reference

as to where this area is.

I'll get the drone
over top of it,

and we'll see if anything
jumps out at us.

to help ascertain

what some of these things
on the map actually are

has been really
working out well.

I'm hoping that we'll have
the same luck here.

It's not easy to spot
something on this mountain,

so we're really gonna have
to comb through systematically

to make sure we've peeked
through every little hole

that we can in this canopy

and see anything
that is out there.

Let me back up a second,
get over the top of it.

‐ What do you got?

‐ It's hard to say. Let me
get a better angle on it.

‐ That's definitely something.

Look at the sharp edge
on that thing.

‐ It looks like a wedge.

‐ Can't believe‐‐It's sticking
up above the treetops.

All right,
take a GPS lock on that.

Rob just spotted a very unique
feature above the canopy.

I've never seen
a stone or a boulder

sticking up above the treetops.

That's certainly something
out of the ordinary here,

and it's right in the area where
this diamond is depicting

it should be in line
with Breach 6 and the river.

So I think it's in our
best interest to get out there

and explore this option,
go see what that is.

‐ At basecamp,
head researcher Bingo

checks in
with John and Rick.

Recently, the teams experienced
unnerving surveillance...

‐ You seeing that, Rob?

Helicopter coming in.

‐ So Bingo met
with Roland Kelts,

a journalist obsessed
with Yamashita's treasure,

to see who might be
monitoring the team's work.

to really understand

the story of this treasure,

uh, and how deep
and how distant it goes,

you have to go back
to General Douglas MacArthur.

‐ Roland has spent years

researching
Yamashita's treasure

and the many powerful
organizations pursuing it.

‐ What I learned from Kelts,
you know,

organizations like the OSS,
or even now, CIA,

they've had their eyes
on this treasure

ever since
after the war ended.

‐ You hear these rumors,
you know,

but nobody ever has come up
with documentation.

I've always thought it was
just a conspiracy theory.

‐ Well, we're talking an insane
amount of money here, guys.

I have reports here
from General MacArthur,

and he goes on record saying

that not only did he
declare himself the SCAP,

or the Supreme Commander
of Allied Power,

I mean he goes on
to talk about that he controls

and has custody
over any Axis property,

precious metals, and stones

belonging to the Japanese
government.

MacArthur knew
about the treasure.

He told President Truman.

How high does this go?

‐ Bingo, it really begs
the question,

who's still looking for it?

‐ I asked Roland if he thought
that if the CIA

or maybe
any other organizations

are still interested
in this treasure,

and he told me that,

if there's still treasure
out there to be found,

they are very interested
in it,

and he told us
to be very careful.

‐ Bingo, you're not making me
feel any better

about these random helicopters

that come cruising
over our project site.

I always try
and just ignore it,

but man,
who knows who they are?

‐ Yeah, I know we were
worried about that,

worried about
people watching us,

worried about what kind of
dangers we might be in,

and I think we were right.

I mean, we've been warned
multiple times.

‐ You know, now I think we need
to be a little more diligent

in what we're doing
and really keep an eye on it.

When you're talking about
billions of dollars of gold

that's buried in a mountain,

everybody's gonna want a piece.

And that's really
kind of unnerving.

We have enough people
watching us here,

and we have to be very careful
about how we proceed.

‐ The next day, John and Rob
look for the landmark

they spotted earlier
with the drone.

‐ That's definitely something.

Look at the sharp edge
on that thing.

‐ Since it corresponds

to a symbol
on McDougald's map,

the brothers hope it could be

a new access point
into the mountain.

‐ We've gotta be getting close.

‐ We're real close. It's gotta
be somewhere right around here.

‐ We saw the tip of it, so it's
gotta be right in this area.

All right, I think
we should split up.

That's the best way to find it.

There's just too much woods
here.

This place is so thick,
with the top of that rock

stuck up through the canopy.
The drone saw it.

And so far,
that's what I'm looking at,

the top of the canopy
more than the bottom

because you can't see
nothing down here.

So gotta keep looking,
We're gonna find it.

Are you kidding me?

Hey, Rob, you got a copy?

‐ Go ahead, brother.

‐ Follow the trail back
the way I came.

You gotta see this.

It's another pyramid.

If this is anything
like the one at Breach 6,

it's pointing to something.

It's hiding
something around here.

‐ Narrator: According
to the Golden Lily code,

pyramids point
to treasure sites.

It was the first clue

an eyewitness
told John to look for

when they came
to the mountain last year.

Following
where the pyramid pointed

led the team to Breach 6.

John hopes this new pyramid

will also lead
somewhere significant.

‐ This is exactly where that
point came up out of the woods,

That's what you saw
with the top of the drone.

It's gotta be
this diamond right here.

You know, this rock
wouldn't be on the map

if it wasn't significant.

The spine of the pyramid
makes me think

that it's pointing somewhere.

And when you look at it
in correlation

to the map that we have,
it looks like it's pointing

to what this upside‐down
U‐shape is along the river.

So we'll have to follow
it straight

and see what we're gonna find.

If we can crack this code,
this could be it.

This could be the way in.

‐ On the mountain,

with progress at other sites
stalled...

‐ Timbered‐up,
toothpick, caved‐in mess.

‐ I can tell you right now,

doesn't seem to be
any treasure in this hole.

‐ Just killed it, Rick.
This thing's done.

‐ ...the waterfall is currently
the most promising option

for uncovering treasure.

So Rick helps the team
get to the bottom

of an odd discovery
made at the bore hole site.

‐ What the heck?

Well, we were in
perfectly solid rock before.

Now there's a bunch of sand
and dirt in the end of this.

‐ To get answers, he looks
through the Bob Curtis tapes.

‐ Bob: I showed him
the map of that site.

This is all
at an angle like this.

When you cut through that,
you break‐‐

you break the sand.

It was a trap that, uh,
that we walked into.

‐ Narrator: The tapes reveal

Curtis and his team
encountered a sand trap

while digging for gold
in Fort Santiago.

For more insight,
Rick turns to the only other

living person who was there‐‐
Chuck McDougald.

‐ Well, Chuck,
on our site up here,

uh, we've been drilling.

We're trying to shoot
for the treasure chamber.

We're getting a ways
into the mountain now,

and we've run across something
a little bit unusual.

We encountered some sand
in an unusual location.

I mean,
we had solid rock, sand,

and then solid rock
in our core drilling.

Can you tell me
anything about that?

‐ Yes.

We encountered something
similar at Fort Santiago.

‐ Narrator:
On February 8, 1988,

Robert Curtis
and Chuck McDougald

began a covert expedition,

allegedly funded
by President Aquino,

to search
for Yamashita's treasure

at Fort Santiago in Manila.

Keeping out of the public eye,

they led a team
of local Philippine workers

to dig a shaft straight down
towards the treasure chamber.

‐ At about the 30‐foot level,

we were in very thick clay.

And all of a sudden,
sand started trickling out

from the side of our,
uh, tunnel.

We didn't know
what to think about it,

but we went ahead
and kept digging.

And about...

5 to 10 minutes
after that trickle occurred,

our whole tunnel collapsed
and, uh,

burying two men inside
the tunnel and killing them.

This happened
on February 12, 1988.

‐ It was a trap that‐‐
that we walked into.

Uh, it was heavy,
wet, moist clay,

which is‐‐which weighs tons,
just slides down.

And this is what happened‐‐
we had a slide this way,

a slide that way,
a slide this way,

and it was a repeat‐‐
repetitive thing.

And that's, that's why
we couldn't save the men.

‐ Uh, they were good friends
of mine.

I'll never forget it.

‐ I'm so sorry to hear that.

‐ Narrator:
After the tragedy,

Curtis and McDougald
faced criminal charges

in a Philippine Senate hearing

formed to investigate
the incident.

‐ Man on recording:
When we get through,

I think the public will
be able to view a room

that hasn't been seen
in at least 45 years.

‐ Narrator: The deaths were
ultimately ruled an accident

and the Fort Santiago
excavation continued.

‐ So this was kinda
set up like an‐‐

a booby trap, then, actually.

‐ That was a booby trap.

We learned the hard way
about that one.

Then we continued
after three weeks

digging straight down,

and that's when we
encountered gold flecks.

‐ Narrator: Many believe
the deadly sand trap,

allegedly crafted

by the Japanese
at Fort Santiago,

may have been inspired by ones
created by ancient Egyptians

to protect vast amounts of gold
and jewels buried in tombs.

‐ My mining engineers,

after the‐‐
after the accident, uh,

were able to confirm that it
was a well‐placed trap,

just like the Egyptians did
with the pyramids.
