continuing his search
for Yamashita's gold.

to get to this treasure.

‐ Like many others,

John believes Japanese general
Tomoyuki Yamashita

took billions of dollars
in treasure

looted by Japan
in World War II

and hid it in the Philippines,

including somewhere
inside this mountain.

‐ The Japanese, they bring
the boxes up the mountain.

‐ According to an eyewitness,

mysterious wooden crates
were hauled up this mountain

by prisoners of war

and buried in tunnels,
which were then destroyed.

‐ ...boom.

‐ Based on that account,

John followed a series
of mysterious symbols

to three promising sites‐‐

a waterfall...

‐ This waterfall's hiding
something.

‐ ...a crater
known as Breach 6...

‐ I've never seen
anything like this.

they uncovered last year.

and I'm taking Rob
over to the tunnel.

This was the biggest find
we had last year.

This tunnel could
possibly lead us

right into a main network
of tunnels

that goes
throughout the mountain.

You know, for me,
it's not about the money.

Treasure hunting
is a passion.

That gold, it tells a story

of the people that lost
their lives,

you know, for that treasure
to even be where it is.

You know, and that's
what we're trying to do.

We're trying
to uncover the truth.

We get that treasure out,

that could change what we think
about World War II.

Oh, this is not
looking so good.

So totally overgrown,
you wouldn't even know

that there was a tunnel here.

‐ That looks really tight.

‐ Looks like
it's collapsed a lot.

It looks extremely unstable.

‐ I expected, when I was
bringing Rob up here,

that we were just gonna walk
back into the tunnel

like last year.

But the mountain had
different plans for us.

‐ The mudslides
from torrential rains

have blocked the tunnel‐‐

an unexpected setback.

‐ You know, last year,
when we were here,

we threw some smoke bombs
in there.

‐ Fire in the hole!

‐ Coat it with a tarp.

We waited to see
if the smoke came out anywhere.

‐ Look!
‐ What?

‐ So all the smoke plumes
we saw last year

could indicate that there's
a tunnel system

that goes deep inside
the mountain.

You have those smoke bombs
with you in the bag?

‐ Yeah.
‐ Let's do that.

Let's put the smoke bombs in,

cover it up with the tarp,

send the drone up.

Wherever the smoke comes out
in the mountain,

we'll do to that spot and see

if that's an entrance
to get in.

Head straight for the gully
right in there.

Yeah, right about there

is where we saw the smoke
last time.

I'm not seeing any smoke.

‐ What does that mean?
What are we gonna do?

‐ There must be more than one
collapsed in that tunnel

because we should be
seeing smoke by now.

five different spots of smoke

coming out of there.

The mountain is really
stacked up against us

at this point.

head back to basecamp

to meet with the rest
of the team.

welcome to the Philippines.

I appreciate y'all
coming out here.

We traveled
halfway around the world

to go after one
of the largest treasures

in modern history.

I acquired some information

that's gonna help us
find that treasure.

It's called nuclear magnetic
resonance.

Through a contact
that I have in Russia,

uh, who has access
to the satellite system there,

they were able to commission
a scan of our mountain

that would show
any metal anomalies

or any metals underground
whatsoever

at this location.

‐ Nuclear magnetic resonance,
or NMR,

is an advanced
satellite scan technology

that uses
targeted frequencies

to detect large
underground metal deposits.

‐ You know, I've seen
this stuff used before

to find precious metal
deposits in mining,

and it definitely works, man.

the slide machine,

we'll tee up some of the scan.

‐ You can see that the satellite
made multiple passes

and picked up multiple targets.

This is the one
that sticks out the most to me.

It's multiple hits
all in one spot,

right on the waterfall.

All the signs and symbols
were pointing last year

to the waterfall,

and I believe there was
a treasure under there.

these symbols were created

by the Golden Lily,

a secret society
of Japanese nobles

and royal family members

who allegedly orchestrated

the looting and burial
of treasure.

‐ Now the satellites,
you know,

are actually showing

that there's a huge
target hit there.

‐ It really is.

‐ And that gives you
an idea

of the depth, too?

‐ It won't give us
the exact depth,

but we'll bring
a tech team in,

and they'll help us
narrow the playing field down.

So they'll tell us
exactly where it is

and the relative location
the satellite pinpointed.

Along the bottom here
we got this line.

The weird thing is

is that Breach 6 sits
right in the middle of this.

‐ Breach 6 is a site
further down the mountain

with a deadly history.

According to an eyewitness

who was a child
during World War II,

the Japanese planted
a booby trap in the area.

Treasure hunters
were digging a shaft

down to what they believed
was a treasure vault

when they reportedly
triggered the booby trap.

Though many have tried...

To date, no one has been
able to access

what lies beneath Breach 6.

‐ Whatever is on that line
is pretty significant

metal‐wise.

It could be metal boxes
of things.

Could be, you know, munitions.

Could be trucks. Could be
a lot of different things.

But whether they're
actually in a tunnel

is really hard to say
at this point.

‐ You don't think
that's possibly

an ore vein of some sort
running across there?

I would think not

because, "A,"
it wouldn't be so straight.

And if there was more ore
on this mountain,

it would be elsewhere,

and they just didn't
get it there,

so it's looking like it's
just across this bottom side

with Breach 6
smack dab in the middle.

But, Rick, you know,

I think that starting
right here at Breach 6

might be the way to go.

I felt like I left a job
undone.

I'm ready to get the treasure.

We're gonna finish the job.

‐ So where does that
leave us at?

‐ It's not here on the map,

but last year
we found a tunnel.

It was collapsed.

If you can open
that tunnel up,

it could lead to everything.

these are our three
main targets‐‐

waterfall, tunnel site,
and Breach 6.

Let's get at it.

‐ The team disperses
across the mountain.

Miners Levi and Geo
are charged

with clearing the tunnel.

‐ Okay, I'm gonna start
moving some dirt.

Make sure you're clear.

‐ Once we get the vegetation
scraped off,

we'll move the dirt that's there
that was closing this thing off.

They we can actually
open this tunnel up

and actually see what the heck
we have inside this thing.

This ground is super moist
and super freakin' muddy,

so there's a potential

that this dirt and rock
can slide down the hill,

and I don't care
what anybody says.

These rocks don't care
about your feelings.

‐ Not a lot of hard rock
yet, is there?

‐ We got to stop
for a minute here.

We got to take a look at this.

‐ What have we got?

‐ I don't know.
Look at that.

What the heck is that?

‐ Well, this thing here's
strange.

I don't know what the heck
this could be.

I don't know if this was
a gate for the front of it

or if they had it for support
in the back of some sort.

‐ We've got round stock
here, too.

‐ Yeah.
‐ From the posts in the back.

‐ Looking at the round stock,

to me, that's a told‐tale sign
that this thing is old.

Usually in the old days,

when they were in a hurry
to put these mines up,

they'd go‐‐
go out in the woods.

They'd saw a tree down.

They'd take it,
cut it into length,

take it right inside
of the mine,

and use it for ground support.

We'll roll this thing over,

and then we're gonna
look at it.

That way, we can see
the bottom of it.

‐ It's a friggin' gate,
isn't it?

‐ Boy, it looks like a gate.
‐ It is a gate.

It's a big heavy‐duty gate.

‐ You're absolutely right.

That's an old hinge.
That's a very old hinge.

And look at all this old,
old round stock.

This stuff is...old.

‐ I don't know how old
that lock is that's on there.

‐ Oh it's got a lock
on it, too.

‐ The gate looks way older
than the lock.

We were expecting
to be the first ones

to step foot in here
in the last 50, 60 years,

and clearly
that's not the case.

Somebody else
has been in here.

Them putting a lock on it,

to me they were trying
to keep somebody out of here.

Bottom line is, until we get
inside of this tunnel,

we're really not gonna know
what the heck's going on.

Don't know who's been here.

But I'm gonna find out.

‐ On a remote mountain
in the Philippines,

a team of Americans
is searching

for Yamashita's gold.

Based on a recent
satellite scan,

they think
some of this treasure

may be below a location
known as Breach 6.

Rick Hurt's been haunted
by that location

since he first came here
two decades ago.

‐ My profession is
precious metal extraction.

20 years ago,
I was in the Philippines

on a project that was
about silver refining.

And one day, Colonel Cariaso,

retired military guy
from the Philippines,

sought me out,

asked me if I was
interested in gold.

And I was like, "Of course
I'm interested in gold."

According to Colonel Cariaso,

he told me that he was raised
in the Marcos household.

As he got older,
he went in the military,

became a very, very trusted
man with President Marcos.

‐ Reportedly obsessed
with Yamashita's treasure,

Filipino President
Ferdinand Marcos

allegedly confiscated maps
created by the Golden Lily,

the secret Japanese society

that coordinated looting
throughout Southeast Asia

during World War II.

Many suspect that Marcos'
declaration of martial law

in 1972

was an attempt to continue
his search more freely.

It's thought that,
before he was ousted in 1986

and fled
to the United States,

Marcos entrusted
one of those maps

to Colonel Coriaso.

‐ Marcos had been gone
for quite a while.

Colonel Coriaso was working
independently.

Coriaso had a map.

The map was the key
to the whole thing.

You know, he wasn't
sharing it with anybody.

He was keeping it
really secretive.

The quick glimpse I got
of the map 20 years ago

just wasn't enough time
to figure things out.

I took a break to go
back to the United States.

I never made it back here.

Colonel Coriaso's gone.
The map is gone.

You know,
we've got new data.

But it would be so nice
just to have a translated map.

I could be sitting

right over the access
to the tunnel

and not know it.

I've got unfinished business
on this mountain,

and I need to find that map.

I don't know if Colonel Coriaso
is still alive.

I haven't been
able to find him.

I just keep thinking,

if I can find Colonel Coriaso,

we can maybe get a look
at that map he had.

‐ So any luck on the computer?

‐Nothing, man. It's like the guy
dropped off the planet.

I don't know what to do next.

‐ There was this guy
that Pete met with last year,

and he preferred not to be
called by his first name,

so we just called him Mr. X.

Mr. X claims that he was
the heir apparent

to Bob Curtis.

‐ Robert Curtis was
a Nevada metallurgist

reportedly approached
by Ferdinand Marcos in 1974

to take part
in a recovery expedition

of Yamashita's treasure.

Like Colonel Coriaso,

Curtis allegedly had access
to Marcos' maps.

The team believes that,
before he died in 2004

of unknown causes,

Curtis may have passed
some of the maps

along to the confidential
informant

they call Mr. X.

‐ You inherited some maps,
didn't you?

‐ He was privy
to all the maps that Bob had.

He was able
to view all the maps.

You know, it is a longshot.

Maybe we can get a hold of him,
get you guys hooked up,

and maybe by some miracle

you could sweet talk him
into even letting you see it.

‐ While John and Rick try
to track down Mr. X,

tech team Colin and Max
go to the waterfall

to pinpoint the location
of the massive metal deposit

picked up in the NMR scan

that John believes

could possibly be
a treasure chamber.

John needs us

to find some sort
of void space

underneath the waterfall here.

The seismic survey is probably
our best chance of doing that.

should we start laying

some seismic cable, Colin?
‐Yep.

‐ Seismic is kind of
like an ultrasound

for the earth.

We send sound down
into the earth.

Sound bounces off
all of the cracks,

all of the voids,

and it comes back.

Colin, that's probably good.

‐ The timing of all
the different vibrations

are sent
to a central computer.

Our computer does
some fancy math

which will tell us
what's underneath us

and pinpoint
exactly where it is.

‐ Seismic testing is derived
from the sonar technology

that gave Allied forces
a prominent edge

confronting the enemy
during World War II.

Relying on sound pulses
called pings,

sonar helped the Allies
dominate the Pacific seas...

destroying 128
of Japan's 174 submarines.

‐ Max: All right, I think
we're almost ready to roll.

‐ We use a sledgehammer
as our sound source.

‐ Large‐scale seismic surveys

can see as far
as 3 miles into the ground.

But thanks to the restricted
space at the waterfall,

the tech team's range
is limited

to about 500 feet.

and then we'll pack up.

super‐expensive equipment,

we're still just smashing
a hammer on a steel plate.

‐ Early the next morning,

miners Levi and Geo continue
working on the tunnel.

They need to install
a support fence

to prevent any rockslides
as they dig out the entrance.

We got the fencing in.
We're rock and rolling now.

‐ With the surrounding area
secured,

the miners can now
safely begin

excavating
the tunnel entrance.

‐ I can't even comprehend
what‐‐what‐‐what's ahead of us.

I want to get inside here
and take a look

and see what we have.

About a 6‐inch hole.

‐ Ah, we're starting
to get her opened up here.

This is an old tunnel.

It's pretty wild‐looking,

‐ With all this mud and clay,

I'm worried about this first
10 feet coming down on us,

especially if we get
some rainfall.

‐ You don't want to walk
straight into this tunnel here

because there's still
ground fall potential.

Wow. This ground's bad, man.

The whole world
could come down on you.

Until we get it
properly caught up

and bolted correctly,

you don't want to go
inside of there.

General Yamashita
was known for tunneling

and burying treasure
inside the mountains.

They wouldn't have put
that timber in there

if they didn't want
this thing to last.

It's time to get in there
and find that treasure.

continues their quest

to find Yamashita's gold,

I found
some phenomenal examples

of the types of loot
that they're going after.

And we think of treasure,

we tend to think
of gold and silver and gems.

But the Japanese are seizing
all kinds of materials,

not just what we think of
as traditional treasure.

You have works of art.
You have religious objects,

archeological expeditions

that brought back
incredible things.

And these are all looted cars

that were actually stolen

from the areas
the Japanese had occupied

and taken back to Japan.

It was against
the laws of war

to engage
in this type of looting,

but Japan had refused

to actually sign
those same laws of war.

‐ I see.
‐ As far as they were concerned,

they weren't bound
by the rules

that they had never
agreed to follow.

‐ After World War II,

the Allied command began
the reparations process

for countries looted
by the Japanese.

American forces oversaw
the massive undertaking

of assessing and collecting
the billions of dollars

in gold, precious metals,
jewels,

and other
plundered resources.

Even though billions of dollars
were returned

to the looted countries,

it is believed to be
only a fraction

of the amount
taken by the Japanese.

‐ Do you know the total
value of treasure

that the Japanese took
and looted during the war

or even before the war?

‐ It's impossible
to say for certain.

We don't have
a consolidated record

of everything they took.

Now, from what I've been
able to figure out,

you're probably looking
at a total amount

of at least
a hundred billion dollars'

worth of material looted,

probably more.

My conservative estimate

is maybe 20% of it
has been recovered

and returned to the countries
that had been invaded

and looted in the process.

What happened
to the other 80%?

‐ You're talking hundreds
of billions of dollars

unaccounted for,

and an awful lot of it is
just a complete mystery.

‐ Now, my team's currently
in northern Luzon,

and I was wondering, if they
were to find any treasure,

how much do you think
we would find

if we were to find anything
in our tunnels?

‐ So for the purposes
of your team,

if we're talking about

the northeastern portion
of Luzon

and in particular
Nueva Vizcaya,

in the summer of 1945,

when Yamashita
finally surrenders,

that's the last place

that the Japanese
are getting pushed into

for their defense of Luzon.

‐ Luzon, the largest
Philippine island,

is where Yamashita made
his last stand in 1945.

He lost 212,000 soldiers
in the northern mountains

before finally surrendering
to American forces

on September 3rd.

The surrender took place
in Baguio City,

just west of Nueva Vizcaya,

where the team is
now hunting.

‐ If there's a bunch
of hidden gold and silver,

it's going to be
in the last places

that were under
Yamashita's control.

How difficult
it will be to find,

well, that's up to you
and your team.

that John suspects

may have access
to Golden Lily treasure maps.

to find Yamashita's treasure.

He was allegedly entrusted

Golden Lily maps...

and tasked with decoding
the location

of the supposed Yamashita
treasure sites.

Ka‐Bar is a military style
fighting knife.

They've been used all the way
back into World War I

and World War II.

They were standard issue
in the Marine Corps,

and that's a lot
what that handle looks like.

‐ You know, this is a really
significant artifact.

If it came from World War II,

it's right in
the right time frame,

and God only knows,
if that thing could talk,

what it could tell us.

‐ Definitely need
to get this thing analyzed.

You're holding a piece
of history right there, man.

taken from him.

as a souvenir.

ended up in that tunnel.

This is my very first
piece of treasure,

and I mean it.

The gold's awesome,

but this here has a lot
of sentimental value to me.

of the South Pacific over here

during World War II
was Marines,

and, I mean, Marines are
brothers, man, you know?

You have Marines

that you don't see
for 10 years,

and it's like you never
missed a day, you know?

I think that's why it hit
so hard home to be

probably a Marine

that lost the knife,
you know.

It's become real personal
to me at this point.

I need to get this mountain.

We need to figure out
what's going on.

Colin and Max present

from the waterfall scans.

Numerous symbols
around the waterfall

make John suspect it could
be hiding a treasure vault.

He hopes the tech team
has found evidence

to confirm his theory.

all of our data,

and as we go in,
this is your waterfall

in this area.

We did collect
a seismic line.

And we found, I think,

something
that you're gonna love.

‐ John's satellite scans

showed a large metal deposit
under the waterfall,

so the tech team performed
a seismic survey...

to pinpoint a possible
tunnel entrance

to the deposit.

‐ We think we've got
either a tunnel

or some type of void space.

‐ So where's
our seismic data,

and it's quite deep,

um, way deeper than I thought
it was gonna be,

and it's way down here.
‐ Wow.

‐ It's like about
300 feet down.

‐ Whoa. 300 feet?

That's a long way down.

But if the Japanese
are burying big treasures

like the one that's up there,

it could be that deep.

‐ If it is that far down,

there's no way
they dug that straight down

from the‐‐the waterfall.

They had to get at it
from a different way.

‐ No one's just gonna come

and start digging to 300 feet
through solid rock.

‐ They had to come in
from a different direction.

‐ There would be
a back door somewhere.

Now we just got to figure out
how we're gonna get there.

from the confidential
informant

that could contain clues
to their mountain.

‐ Did he give you the map?

He was really adamant
about no maps.
